that_o there_o she_o may_v bring_v forth_o the_o creator_n of_o all_o creature_n here_o may_v be_v plain_o perceive_v what_o be_v the_o knowledge_n and_o wisdom_n of_o the_o world_n concern_v divine_a matter_n namely_o that_o it_o be_v blind_a and_o vain_a in_o understanding_n that_o it_o see_v not_o the_o work_n of_o god_n and_o if_o it_o be_v so_o that_o it_o see_v they_o that_o it_o know_v not_o what_o they_o mean_v contempt_n comfort_n against_o worldly_a misery_n &_o contempt_n hereof_o let_v we_o learn_v not_o to_o be_v move_v or_o discourage_v if_o we_o be_v poor_a and_o miserable_a and_o forsake_v of_o the_o world_n for_o we_o have_v here_o great_a comfort_n if_o christ_n the_o maker_n of_o all_o thing_n with_o his_o belove_a mother_n be_v cast_v into_o so_o great_a misery_n and_o so_o contemn_v of_o the_o world_n why_o may_v not_o the_o same_o also_o come_v unto_o we_o or_o why_o shall_v not_o we_o be_v in_o misery_n and_o compass_v about_o with_o all_o calamity_n bear_v they_o patient_o yea_o if_o god_n will_v at_o any_o time_n kill_v we_o with_o adversity_n and_o distress_n but_o this_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v lament_v that_o we_o do_v exclude_v such_o a_o example_n from_o our_o eye_n but_o much_o far_o from_o our_o hart_n we_o shall_v easy_o suffer_v adversity_n and_o contempt_n if_o so_o be_v that_o we_o beleve_v and_o have_v a_o sure_a trust_n and_o confidence_n in_o god_n when_o as_o we_o see_v that_o the_o lord_n christ_n suffer_v this_o misery_n poverty_n and_o calamity_n wherefore_o this_o be_v first_o thorough_o to_o be_v mark_v and_o consider_v of_o we_o how_o christ_n come_v into_o the_o world_n in_o so_o great_a poverty_n and_o find_v not_o so_o much_o as_o one_o in_o so_o great_a a_o city_n which_o be_v dutiful_a and_o beneficial_a towards_o he_o thus_o this_o nativity_n be_v receive_v in_o the_o earth_n over_o which_o notwithstanding_o all_o the_o heavenly_a soldier_n do_v exceed_o rejoice_v as_o it_o follow_v and_o there_o be_v in_o the_o same_o country_n shepherd_n abide_v in_o the_o field_n and_o watch_v their_o flock_n by_o night_n and_o lo_o the_o angel_n of_o the_o lord_n come_v upon_o they_o and_o poverty_n misery_n and_o contempt_n but_o the_o poor_a and_o more_o despise_v that_o he_o be_v before_o the_o world_n so_o much_o great_a care_n and_o regard_n god_n and_o all_o the_o heavenly_a soldier_n have_v of_o he_o so_o that_o we_o may_v conceive_v comfort_n hereby_o and_o believe_v assure_o that_o the_o more_o we_o be_v reject_v of_o the_o world_n the_o more_o we_o be_v esteem_v before_o god_n many_o the_o blind_a &_o vain_a devotion_n of_o many_o thou_o may_v find_v many_o which_o do_v here_o think_v thus_o and_o be_v touch_v with_o such_o devotion_n as_o this_o o_o if_o i_o have_v be_v there_o then_o with_o how_o great_a diligence_n will_v i_o have_v serve_v this_o child_n and_o do_v for_o he_o yea_o i_o will_v have_v wash_v even_o his_o swaddle_a clothes_n o_o if_o i_o have_v be_v so_o happy_a as_o the_o shepherd_n that_o i_o also_o may_v have_v see_v the_o lord_n lie_v in_o a_o manger_n now_o in_o deed_n thou_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o do_v those_o duty_n when_o thou_o know_v christ_n to_o be_v so_o high_a and_o noble_a sure_o thou_o will_v have_v be_v as_o slack_v in_o thy_o duty_n at_o that_o time_n as_o the_o citizen_n
these_o thing_n be_v write_v for_o the_o instruction_n and_o comfort_n of_o all_o we_o whereby_o we_o ought_v to_o learn_v how_o deep_o sometime_o christ_n hide_v his_o grace_n from_o we_o and_o how_o we_o must_v not_o judge_v of_o god_n according_a to_o our_o own_o sense_n and_o opinion_n but_o only_o according_a to_o his_o word_n for_o we_o see_v here_o that_o albeit_o christ_n show_v himself_o very_o hard_o to_o this_o woman_n yet_o he_o do_v not_o plain_o deny_v to_o help_v she_o but_o whatsoever_o he_o answer_v howsoever_o it_o seem_v to_o pretend_v a_o denial_n yet_o be_v it_o not_o a_o denial_n but_o do_v hang_v in_o doubt_n and_o leave_v a_o entrance_n for_o faith_n although_o but_o small_a for_o he_o say_v not_o at_o her_o first_o petition_n i_o will_v not_o hear_v she_o but_o he_o hold_v his_o peace_n neither_o promise_v nor_o deny_v help_n so_o to_o the_o second_o petition_n which_o the_o apostle_n make_v he_o say_v not_o she_o be_v not_o of_o the_o house_n of_o israel_n i_o can_v not_o therefore_o perform_v that_o which_o she_o desire_v but_o he_o only_o say_v i_o be_o not_o send_v but_o to_o the_o lose_a sheep_n of_o the_o house_n of_o israel_n leave_v all_o thing_n in_o doubt_n and_o in_o the_o midst_n between_o a_o plain_a grant_n and_o a_o denial_n so_o when_o she_o have_v the_o three_o time_n desire_v he_o he_o say_v not_o thou_o be_v a_o dog_n get_v thou_o hence_o the_o bread_n of_o the_o child_n be_v not_o due_a unto_o thou_o but_o he_o say_v it_o be_v not_o good_a to_o take_v the_o child_n bread_n etc._n etc._n again_o leave_v in_o doubt_n whether_o she_o be_v a_o dog_n or_o no._n nevertheless_o all_o these_o say_n do_v pretend_v outward_o rather_o a_o denial_n of_o help_n then_o provoke_v she_o to_o hope_n but_o in_o very_a deed_n they_o do_v contain_v in_o they_o rather_o a_o promise_n and_o hope_n than_o a_o denial_n yea_o there_o be_v nothing_o but_o a_o promise_n and_o a_o certain_a expectation_n of_o help_n howbeit_o most_o deep_o hide_v and_o altogether_o secret_a under_o that_o silence_n and_o answer_n although_o they_o be_v hard_a and_o a_o denial_n only_o sound_v outward_o by_o these_o it_o be_v show_v how_o our_o hart_n be_v wont_a to_o be_v affect_v in_o tentation_n for_o according_a as_o that_o feel_v in_o tentation_n so_o christ_n here_o behave_v himself_o it_o feel_v all_o thing_n to_o be_v deny_v when_o as_o it_o be_v far_o otherwise_o wherefore_o it_o be_v requisite_a that_o leave_v it_o own_o feel_n by_o a_o sure_a faith_n in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n it_o conceive_v and_o hold_v fast_o the_o promise_n of_o help_n deep_o hide_v under_o the_o denial_n and_o yield_v unto_o the_o sentence_n of_o god_n towards_o we_o as_o this_o woman_n do_v so_o shall_v we_o overcome_v and_o take_v the_o lord_n in_o his_o word_n that_o he_o can_v not_o but_o help_v us._n so_o that_o if_o we_o feel_v in_o our_o conscience_n at_o any_o time_n god_n rebuke_v we_o pronounce_v we_o sinner_n and_o unworthy_a of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n than_o we_o feel_v as_o it_o be_v hell_n and_o it_o seem_v unto_o we_o that_o we_o be_v pass_v all_o hope_n and_o recovery_n for_o ever_o sin_n when_o god_n pronounce_v we_o sinner_n we_o ought_v to_o acknowledge_v and_o confess_v our_o sin_n &_o pray_v former_a eye_n which_o god_n have_v promise_v to_o they_o that_o be_v penitent_a for_o their_o sin_n then_o if_o any_o have_v the_o skill_n of_o this_o woman_n that_o he_o can_v take_v the_o lord_n in_o his_o own_o judgement_n and_o say_v yea_o lord_n i_o be_o a_o sinner_n and_o altogether_o unworthy_a of_o thy_o grace_n but_o thou_o have_v promise_v forgiveness_n to_o sinner_n neither_o do_v thou_o come_v to_o call_v the_o righteous_a but_o as_o paul_n say_v to_o save_v sinner_n he_o true_o shall_v bring_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o lord_n shall_v be_v enforce_v even_o by_o his_o own_o judgement_n to_o have_v mercy_n upon_o he_o so_o do_v manasses_n when_o be_v penitent_a he_o pray_v for_o pardon_n as_o we_o read_v in_o his_o prayer_n he_o yield_v to_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n acknowledge_v himself_o a_o most_o grievous_a sinner_n and_o so_o he_o bind_v god_n with_o his_o promise_n which_o have_v promise_v forgiveness_n of_o sin_n to_o sinner_n not_o to_o the_o righteous_a the_o same_o also_o do_v david_n observe_v psal_n 51._o against_o thou_o only_o say_v he_o have_v i_o sin_v and_o do_v this_o evil_n in_o thy_o sight_n that_o thou_o may_v be_v justify_v in_o thy_o say_n and_o find_v pure_a when_o thou_o be_v judge_v for_o that_o do_v purchase_v unto_o we_o all_o displeasure_n that_o we_o disdain_v to_o suffer_v the_o judgement_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o do_v against_o our_o will_n yield_v unto_o his_o sentence_n when_o he_o pronounce_v we_o sinner_n such_o a_o great_a thing_n be_v it_o to_o acknowledge_v sin_n and_o to_o embrace_v the_o judgement_n of_o god_n we_o all_o confess_v ourselves_o sinner_n in_o word_n but_o as_o soon_o as_o the_o lord_n speak_v that_o in_o our_o hart_n and_o pronounce_v we_o sinner_n we_o do_v not_o abide_v by_o that_o which_o before_o we_o confess_v we_o have_v lever_n be_v count_v righteous_a and_o free_a from_o that_o judgement_n but_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v if_o god_n must_v be_v just_a in_o his_o word_n that_o thou_o be_v a_o sinner_n than_o also_o may_v thou_o use_v the_o right_n of_o sinner_n which_o god_n himself_o have_v supper_n here_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o very_a rich_a &_o sumptuous_a feast_n which_o god_n have_v make_v through_o christ_n by_o the_o gospel_n which_o set_v before_o we_o great_a good_a thing_n and_o rich_a treasure_n and_o he_o send_v his_o servant_n to_o bid_v man_n to_o this_o sumptuous_a supper_n that_o be_v the_o apostle_n be_v altogether_o send_v with_o one_o word_n into_o the_o whole_a
differ_v nothing_o from_o a_o servant_n though_o he_o be_v lord_n of_o all_o 2._o but_o be_v under_o tuter_n and_o governor_n until_o the_o time_n appoint_v of_o the_o father_n 3._o even_o so_o we_o when_o we_o be_v child_n be_v in_o bondage_n under_o the_o rudiment_n of_o the_o world_n 4._o but_o when_o the_o fullness_n of_o time_n be_v come_v god_n send_v forth_o his_o son_n make_v of_o a_o which_o it_o can_v not_o be_v that_o one_o shall_v right_o understand_v paul_n who_o every_o where_o intreat_v of_o faith_n with_o such_o force_n of_o the_o spirit_n as_o he_o be_v able_a i_o must_v therefore_o speak_v somewhat_o that_o this_o text_n may_v be_v make_v plain_a and_o that_o i_o may_v more_o convenient_o bring_v light_n unto_o it_o in_o expound_v it_o i_o will_v speak_v a_o few_o word_n in_o manner_n of_o a_o preface_n first_o therefore_o we_o must_v understand_v that_o that_o treatise_n wherein_o be_v entreat_v of_o good_a work_n do_v far_o differ_v from_o that_o wherein_o be_v entreat_v of_o justification_n as_o there_o be_v very_o great_a difference_n between_o the_o substance_n and_o the_o work_n between_o a_o man_n &_o his_o work_n now_o justification_n be_v of_o man_n and_o not_o of_o work_n for_o man_n be_v either_o justify_v and_o save_v or_o judge_v and_o condemn_v and_o not_o work_n neither_o be_v it_o in_o controversy_n among_o the_o godly_a that_o man_n be_v justify_v by_o no_o work_n but_o righteousness_n must_v come_v unto_o he_o from_o some_o other_o where_o then_o from_o his_o own_o work_n for_o moses_n write_v of_o abel_n after_o this_o sort_n the_o lord_n have_v respect_n unto_o abel_n and_o to_o his_o oblation_n work_n god_n first_o regard_v the_o man_n and_o they_o the_o work_n first_o he_o have_v respect_n to_o abel_n himself_o then_o to_o his_o oblation_n because_o that_o abel_n be_v first_o count_v righteous_a entire_a and_o acceptable_a unto_o god_n and_o then_o for_o his_o sake_n his_o oblation_n also_o be_v allow_v and_o not_o he_o because_o of_o his_o oblation_n again_o god_n have_v no_o respect_n to_o cain_n and_o therefore_o neither_o to_o his_o oblation_n where_o again_o thou_o see_v that_o regard_n be_v have_v first_o of_o the_o worker_n they_o of_o the_o work_n of_o this_o place_n it_o be_v very_o plain_o gather_v that_o no_o work_n can_v be_v allow_v of_o god_n whereas_o he_o which_o work_v that_o work_n be_v not_o first_o acceptable_a to_o he_o and_o again_o that_o no_o work_n be_v disalow_v of_o he_o unless_o the_o author_n thereof_o be_v disallow_v before_o i_o think_v that_o these_o thing_n will_v be_v sufficient_a concern_v this_o matter_n in_o this_o place_n of_o which_o it_o be_v easy_a to_o understand_v that_o there_o be_v two_o sort_n of_o work_n some_o go_v before_o justification_n and_o some_o follow_v it_o and_o that_o these_o last_o be_v good_a work_n in_o deed_n but_o that_o those_o other_o do_v only_o appear_v to_o be_v good_a hereof_o come_v such_o disagreement_n between_o god_n and_o those_o counterfect_a holy_a one_o for_o this_o cause_n nature_n and_o reason_n rise_v and_o rage_n against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n this_o be_v that_o whereof_o almost_o all_o the_o whole_a scripture_n intreat_v the_o lord_n in_o his_o word_n define_v that_o all_o work_n that_o go_v before_o justification_n be_v evell_a and_o of_o no_o importance_n and_o require_v that_o man_n himself_o man_n be_v always_o ready_a unto_o evell_a whereby_o undouted_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o he_o be_v able_a to_o do_v nothing_o that_o be_v good_a which_o have_v the_o fountain_n of_o action_n that_o be_v his_o heart_n corrupt_v and_o if_o he_o do_v many_o work_n which_o in_o outward_a show_n seem_v good_a justify_v god_n have_v regard_n first_o to_o the_o worker_n then_o to_o the_o work_n the_o work_v sake_n the_o worker_n may_v be_v crown_v now_o god_n go_v not_o from_o his_o sentence_n as_o it_o be_v meet_v and_o just_a and_o these_o will_v seem_v nothing_o less_o they_o to_o err_v in_o any_o respect_n they_o will_v not_o have_v their_o good_a work_n contemn_v reason_n to_o be_v nothing_o esteem_v free_a will_n to_o be_v count_v uneffectual_a or_o sure_o if_o thou_o do_v here_o strive_v against_o they_o they_o begin_v to_o be_v angry_a with_o god_n and_o count_v it_o a_o small_a matter_n to_o kill_v their_o brother_n abel_n but_o here_o perhaps_o thou_o will_v say_v what_o be_v needful_a to_o be_v do_v by_o what_o mean_n shall_v i_o first_o of_o all_o become_v righteous_a and_o acceptable_a to_o god_n how_o shall_v i_o attain_v to_o this_o perfect_a justification_n make_v of_o a_o woman_n they_o of_o a_o virgin_n for_o that_o a_o virgin_n be_v not_o a_o name_n of_o nature_n but_o a_o woman_n signify_v a_o sex_n and_o certain_a condition_n whereunto_o it_o belong_v to_o be_v with_o child_n and_o to_o bring_v forth_o that_o be_v to_o do_v the_o part_n of_o a_o mother_n see_v therefore_o that_o marie_n be_v a_o mother_n in_o deed_n she_o be_v right_o call_v a_o woman_n for_o she_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n unto_o we_o which_o belong_v to_o a_o mother_n and_o not_o to_o a_o virgin_n although_o she_o bring_v it_o forth_o alone_o without_o the_o mean_n of_o man_n wherein_o she_o be_v declare_v both_o a_o singular_a virgin_n and_o woman_n but_o because_o it_o be_v of_o great_a importance_n to_o the_o apostle_n and_o unto_o all_o we_o that_o marie_n faith_n and_o incline_v it_o unto_o true_a good_a work_n the_o same_o be_v usual_a with_o paul_n also_o who_o rom._n 3_o when_o he_o have_v reject_v the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n and_o extol_v faith_n answer_v such_o a_o objection_n say_v do_v we_o then_o make_v the_o law_n of_o none_o effect_v god_n forbid_v yea_o we_o establish_v the_o law_n for_o we_o teach_v that_o the_o true_a fulfil_n of_o the_o law_n be_v by_o christ_n the_o like_a also_o be_v wont_a to_o be_v object_v to_o we_o as_o though_o we_o do_v forbid_v good_a work_n when_o we_o disallow_v monastery_n with_o their_o work_n &_o
