son_n we_o be_v the_o child_n of_o promise_n by_o faith_n in_o christ_n the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n put_v we_o into_o a_o state_n of_o sonship_n adam_n be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n by_o creation_n but_o not_o by_o grace_n and_o adoption_n till_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n be_v make_v 13._o creation_n be_v the_o foundation_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n but_o it_o be_v redemption_n that_o be_v the_o foundation_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n the_o foundation_n of_o this_o be_v because_o christ_n have_v die_v for_o we_o and_o shed_v his_o blood_n for_o we_o 14._o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n god_n do_v only_o manifest_v the_o attribute_n of_o his_o greatness_n and_o power_n and_o wisdom_n and_o justice_n but_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n he_o do_v demonstrate_v the_o attribute_n of_o his_o grace_n and_o mercy_n goodness_n and_o patience_n etc._n etc._n god_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n be_v only_o a_o just_a god_n do_v this_o and_o live_v so_o long_o as_o thou_o keep_v my_o commandment_n thou_o shall_v live_v and_o no_o long_o but_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n he_o be_v a_o merciful_a god_n too_o the_o lord_n do_v make_v the_o attribute_n of_o his_o mercy_n and_o goodness_n to_o shine_v forth_o in_o this_o covenant_n shall_v god_n say_v to_o we_o so_o long_o as_o you_o do_v well_o it_o shall_v be_v well_o with_o you_o but_o lay_v before_o you_o the_o great_a misery_n of_o those_o that_o be_v stranger_n to_o this_o covenant_n of_o promise_n and_o here_o i_o may_v lay_v before_o you_o much_o astonish_n and_o perplex_v matter_n to_o all_o those_o that_o be_v not_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n i_o shall_v be_v the_o large_a upon_o this_o particular_a because_o the_o last_o day_n i_o spend_v half_o a_o hour_n about_o a_o use_n of_o comfort_n in_o show_v you_o your_o happiness_n in_o be_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o therefore_o now_o i_o shall_v spend_v the_o like_a time_n in_o declare_v the_o misery_n grace_n of_o all_o those_o that_o be_v stranger_n to_o the_o covenant_n which_o i_o shall_v comprise_v under_o these_o six_o head_n 1._o this_o be_v one_o part_n of_o your_o misery_n you_o be_v bind_v to_o keep_v the_o whole_a law_n of_o god_n and_o that_o in_o your_o person_n else_o you_o can_v never_o be_v save_v and_o oh_o how_o impossible_a be_v this_o for_o any_o man_n to_o do_v he_o that_o be_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n god_n the_o father_n accept_v of_o christ_n keep_v and_o fulfil_n of_o the_o law_n for_o he_o as_o if_o it_o be_v do_v by_o he_o in_o his_o own_o person_n but_o to_o such_o as_o be_v not_o in_o this_o covenant_n of_o grace_n god_n say_v to_o they_o if_o you_o do_v not_o keep_v the_o whole_a law_n and_o that_o personal_o you_o shall_v be_v damn_v eternal_o as_o in_o gal._n 5._o 3._o say_v the_o apostle_n there_o i_o testify_v again_o â—o_o every_o man_n that_o be_v circumcise_v that_o he_o be_v bind_v to_o keep_v the_o whole_a law_n if_o you_o will_v not_o accept_v of_o christ_n and_o accept_v of_o salvation_n by_o his_o blood_n alone_o but_o run_v to_o circumcision_n i_o tell_v you_o say_v the_o apostle_n that_o you_o be_v debtor_n to_o keep_v the_o whole_a law_n of_o god_n and_o he_o will_v cast_v you_o into_o hell_n upon_o the_o least_o breach_n of_o the_o law_n oh_o thou_o unhappy_a man_n upon_o how_o hard_a term_n can_v thou_o hope_v for_o salvation_n even_o upon_o impossible_a term_n thou_o can_v as_o well_o keep_v the_o sea_n in_o thy_o fist_n as_o keep_v the_o whole_a law_n of_o god_n in_o thy_o own_o person_n god_n say_v to_o thou_o if_o thou_o do_v break_v but_o one_o command_n though_o thou_o shall_v keep_v all_o the_o rest_n yet_o thou_o shall_v die_v and_o be_v damn_v eternal_o but_o if_o you_o be_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n though_o you_o break_v the_o law_n again_o and_o again_o yet_o christ_n do_v redeem_v you_o from_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n he_o be_v make_v a_o to_o assist_v and_o enable_v we_o to_o the_o performance_n of_o the_o duty_n as_o for_o example_n the_o lord_n bid_v we_o to_o wash_v we_o and_o make_v we_o 16._o clean_o and_o put_v away_o the_o evil_a of_o our_o do_n and_o a_o poor_a soul_n say_v oh_o lord_n i_o be_o not_o able_a to_o wash_v my_o heart_n nor_o cleanse_v my_o way_n nor_o to_o do_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v good_a of_o myself_o and_o therefore_o say_v god_n again_o i_o will_v wash_v you_o and_o make_v you_o white_a than_o snow_n so_o god_n 25_o bid_v we_o to_o get_v new_a heart_n and_o then_o again_o he_o promise_v to_o create_v in_o we_o new_a heart_n and_o renew_v right_n spirit_n within_o we_o i_o may_v instance_n in_o sundry_a other_o particular_n but_o now_o this_o be_v thy_o unhappiness_n oh_o man_n that_o be_v a_o stranger_n to_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n god_n bid_v thou_o keep_v his_o command_n but_o he_o give_v thou_o no_o power_n to_o fulfil_v his_o command_n he_o bid_v thou_o act_v grace_n and_o never_o give_v thou_o a_o spirit_n of_o grace_n he_o bid_v thou_o pray_v and_o yet_o never_o power_v out_o upon_o thou_o a_o spirit_n of_o prayer_n and_o if_o adam_n in_o his_o innocency_n when_o he_o be_v perfect_a be_v not_o able_a to_o keep_v god_n command_n how_o much_o more_o unable_a art_n thou_o to_o do_v any_o thing_n that_o may_v please_v god_n thou_o by_o thy_o own_o strength_n art_n as_o well_o able_a to_o make_v a_o world_n as_o to_o make_v one_o prayer_n or_o perform_v any_o duty_n in_o a_o holy_a and_o spiritual_a manner_n thou_o can_v as_o well_o destroy_v the_o whole_a world_n with_o thy_o own_o hand_n as_o subdue_v any_o lust_n by_o thy_o own_o strength_n but_o under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n god_n tell_v we_o that_o though_o we_o can_v keep_v the_o law_n yet_o he_o will_v accept_v of_o his_o son_n keep_v it_o for_o we_o and_o he_o have_v promise_v to_o help_v and_o assist_v we_o in_o the_o performance_n of_o every_o thing_n that_o he_o command_v we_o 3._o you_o that_o be_v stranger_n to_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n herein_o lie_v your_o misery_n you_o have_v no_o advocate_n to_o plead_v for_o you_o nor_o mediator_n to_o stand_v between_o god_n and_o you_o you_o have_v a_o angry_a god_n frown_v upon_o you_o and_o a_o gall_a conscience_n ready_a to_o accuse_v you_o and_o every_o thing_n else_o in_o the_o world_n against_o you_o but_o no_o friend_n either_o in_o heaven_n or_o in_o earth_n to_o plead_v
the_o 7._o verse_n that_o in_o the_o age_n to_o come_v he_o may_v show_v the_o exceed_a riches_n of_o his_o grace_n in_o his_o kindness_n towards_o we_o through_o jesus_n christ_n 4._o here_o be_v lay_v down_o the_o final_a cause_n of_o it_o in_o the_o same_o verse_n also_o that_o in_o age_n to_o come_v he_o may_v show_v the_o exceed_a riches_n of_o his_o grace_n and_o last_o here_o be_v the_o the_o state_n of_o nature_n positive_o what_o he_o be_v and_o that_o in_o five_o particular_n 1._o man_n in_o their_o natural_a condition_n be_v describe_v to_o be_v dead_a in_o trespass_n and_o sin_n 2._o they_o walk_v according_a to_o the_o course_n of_o this_o world_n as_o pagan_n and_o heathen_n do_v 3._o according_a to_o the_o prince_n of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o air_n that_o be_v the_o devil_n now_o the_o devil_n be_v call_v the_o prince_n of_o the_o air_n either_o because_o he_o do_v reside_v in_o the_o air_n or_o else_o because_o he_o have_v the_o power_n of_o the_o wind_n and_o of_o the_o air_n 4._o they_o be_v call_v child_n of_o disobe_n dience_n that_o be_v bour_fw-mi n_o in_o a_o state_n of_o disobedience_n quite_o contrary_a to_o the_o command_n of_o god_n 5._o that_o christ_n that_o be_v the_o first_o you_o be_v alien_n from_o the_o commonwealth_n of_o israel_n that_o be_v the_o second_o you_o be_v stranger_n to_o the_o covenant_n of_o promise_n that_o be_v the_o three_o you_o be_v without_o hope_n that_o be_v the_o four_o and_o you_o be_v without_o god_n in_o the_o world_n that_o be_v the_o five_o now_o these_o comprehensive_a expression_n contain_v in_o they_o the_o whole_a misery_n of_o man_n and_o that_o in_o these_o five_o particular_n here_o name_v 2._o here_o be_v describe_v the_o time_n how_o long_o a_o man_n be_v in_o this_o condition_n that_o at_o that_o time_n that_o be_v the_o time_n during_o your_o unconverted_a estate_n as_o long_o as_o you_o be_v unconvert_v so_o long_o you_o be_v without_o christ_n and_o a_o alien_n from_o the_o common_a wealth_n of_o israel_n and_o a_o stranger_n to_o the_o covenant_n of_o promise_n without_o hope_n and_o without_o god_n in_o the_o world_n and_o now_o what_o a_o dismal_a text_n have_v i_o here_o to_o handle_v and_o what_o a_o doleful_a tragedy_n be_o i_o now_o to_o act_v but_o yet_o out_o of_o every_o one_o of_o these_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o comfort_n which_o may_v flow_v forth_o i_o shall_v only_o at_o present_a make_v entrance_n into_o the_o word_n and_o speak_v more_o full_o to_o they_o afterward_o that_o at_o that_o time_n you_o be_v without_o christ_n that_o at_o that_o time_n belove_v here_o want_v something_o to_o supply_v the_o sense_n of_o the_o word_n and_o therefore_o read_v the_o forego_n word_n and_o you_o will_v find_v what_o must_v be_v bring_v in_o the_o verse_n before_o run_v thus_o wherefore_o remember_v that_o you_o be_v in_o time_n past_o gentile_n in_o the_o flesh_n etc._n etc._n wherefore_o remember_v these_o word_n must_v be_v prefix_v wherefore_o remember_v that_o at_o that_o time_n you_o be_v without_o christ_n and_o alien_n to_o the_o commonwealth_n of_o israel_n etc._n etc._n i_o shall_v here_o by_o the_o way_n only_o draw_v out_o this_o one_o doctrine_n from_o the_o coherence_n of_o the_o word_n wherefore_o remember_v that_o at_o that_o time_n the_o apostle_n will_v have_v these_o convert_v ephesian_n to_o remember_v that_o they_o be_v man_n without_o christ_n and_o alien_n to_o the_o commonwealth_n of_o israel_n and_o stranger_n to_o the_o covenant_n of_o promise_n without_o hope_n and_o without_o god_n in_o the_o world_n now_o from_o hence_o i_o will_v commend_v this_o observation_n to_o you_o doct._n that_o it_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n that_o man_n in_o a_o convert_a estate_n shall_v often_o call_v to_o mind_v the_o sinfulness_n and_o misery_n they_o be_v guilty_a of_o before_o their_o conversion_n belove_a this_o be_v a_o subject_n i_o can_v never_o have_v occasion_n to_o speak_v to_o you_o of_o before_o and_o yet_o it_o be_v a_o point_n of_o admirable_a use_n especial_o in_o these_o time_n wherein_o people_n think_v that_o when_o once_o they_o be_v bring_v into_o a_o state_n of_o grace_n they_o must_v live_v in_o divine_a rapture_n and_o revelation_n and_o spiritual_a joy_n above_o duty_n and_o ordinance_n and_o never_o look_v back_o into_o their_o former_a sinfulness_n and_o wickedness_n they_o be_v guilty_a of_o before_o their_o conversion_n why_o here_o the_o ephesian_n be_v convert_v man_n and_o have_v extraordinary_a privilege_n they_o be_v bring_v to_o sit_v in_o heavenly_a place_n in_o christ_n jesus_n and_o yet_o the_o apostle_n bid_v they_o remember_v their_o former_a sinfulness_n and_o misery_n remember_v o_o you_o ephesian_n that_o you_o be_v once_o without_o christ_n and_o you_o be_v alien_n to_o the_o commonwealth_n of_o israel_n etc._n etc._n therefore_o you_o must_v take_v heed_n of_o this_o to_o think_v that_o when_o you_o be_v convert_v you_o must_v be_v only_o rapt_v up_o into_o the_o three_o heaven_n and_o never_o look_v back_o into_o your_o former_a condition_n you_o see_v here_o the_o apostle_n bid_v you_o remember_v what_o you_o be_v at_o that_o time_n during_o your_o unconverted_a estate_n that_o you_o be_v then_o without_o christ_n and_o stranger_n to_o the_o covenant_n of_o promise_n etc._n etc._n so_o that_o you_o see_v it_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n that_o man_n in_o a_o convert_a estate_n shall_v often_o call_v to_o mind_v the_o sin_n and_o misery_n they_o be_v in_o before_o conversion_n now_o before_o i_o come_v to_o give_v you_o the_o reason_n of_o the_o point_n give_v i_o leave_v to_o premise_v these_o three_o caution_n when_o i_o tell_v you_o that_o after_o your_o conversion_n you_o shall_v call_v to_o mind_v your_o sin_n and_o misery_n before_o conversion_n you_o must_v not_o do_v it_o 1._o with_o complacency_n of_o spirit_n nor_o 2._o with_o stupidity_n of_o heart_n nor_o 3._o with_o despondency_n of_o mind_n caution_n 1_o 1._o you_o must_v not_o call_v to_o mind_v your_o former_a sinfulness_n with_o complacency_n of_o spirit_n to_o please_v your_o humour_n you_o must_v not_o do_v as_o some_o great_a man_n use_v to_o do_v that_o have_v be_v guilty_a of_o great_a and_o cry_a sin_n as_o adultery_n drunkenness_n swear_v and_o the_o like_a in_o their_o youth_n go_v tell_v and_o boast_v of_o they_o in_o their_o age_n this_o be_v a_o very_a great_a wickedness_n you_o must_v call_v to_o mind_v your_o former_a sinfulness_n not_o with_o complacency_n but_o with_o bitterness_n of_o spirit_n with_o grief_n sorrow_n and_o perplexity_n of_o heart_n many_o man_n will_v tell_v you_o large_a story_n of_o the_o wickedness_n that_o they_o have_v commit_v but_o they_o do_v it_o with_o delight_n and_o if_o they_o have_v strength_n and_o ability_n they_o will_v be_v guilty_a of_o the_o same_o sin_n and_o wickedness_n still_o which_o be_v a_o most_o ungodly_a practice_n and_o that_o which_o the_o scripture_n condemn_v man_n for_o as_o in_o the_o 23._o of_o ezek._n 23._o 19_o 21._o yet_o she_o multiply_v her_o whoredom_n 21._o in_o call_v to_o remembrance_n the_o day_n of_o her_o youth_n wherein_o she_o have_v play_v the_o harlot_n in_o the_o land_n of_o egypt_n thus_o thou_o call_v to_o remembrance_n the_o lewdness_n of_o thy_o youth_n the_o meaning_n of_o this_o be_v she_o call_v her_o sin_n to_o remembrance_n but_o it_o be_v so_o as_o to_o play_v the_o whore_n still_o and_o to_o be_v unclean_a still_o she_o do_v it_o with_o delight_n and_o complacency_n with_o content_a and_o joy_n now_o i_o say_v you_o shall_v call_v
your_o sin_n to_o remembrance_n with_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o grief_n and_o sorrow_n and_o bitterness_n of_o spirit_n and_o therefore_o when_o young_a gallant_n will_v boast_v of_o their_o sin_n and_o tell_v how_o often_o they_o have_v be_v drink_v and_o have_v make_v other_o to_o be_v so_o and_o how_o often_o they_o have_v play_v the_o whoremaster_n and_o have_v draw_v other_o to_o do_v so_o this_o be_v a_o most_o diabolical_a remembrance_n 2._o you_o must_v not_o call_v your_o former_a sin_n to_o remembrance_n with_o stupidity_n of_o heart_n neither_o beloved_n there_o be_v many_o man_n can_v remember_v what_o lewd_a course_n they_o have_v take_v and_o what_o wicked_a life_n they_o have_v live_v how_o often_o they_o have_v be_v drink_v and_o unclean_a and_o the_o like_a and_o yet_o be_v never_o trouble_v at_o the_o remembrance_n of_o it_o their_o heart_n do_v not_o smite_v they_o with_o remorse_n and_o sorrow_n but_o be_v like_o a_o rock_n the_o sense_n of_o sin_n never_o trouble_v they_o this_o be_v no_o way_n of_o call_v sin_n to_o remembrance_n with_o a_o blockish_a and_o stupid_a heart_n this_o be_v not_o thanks_o worthy_a but_o it_o must_v be_v do_v with_o a_o break_a and_o a_o bleed_a and_o a_o contrite_a heart_n and_o 3._o take_v in_o this_o caution_n too_o it_o must_v not_o be_v do_v with_o despondency_n of_o mind_n neither_o there_o be_v many_o convert_v one_o that_o do_v call_v their_o sin_n to_o remembrance_n but_o it_o make_v they_o discourage_v and_o unwilling_a to_o come_v to_o christ_n it_o make_v they_o think_v that_o they_o have_v no_o interest_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n but_o this_o shall_v not_o be_v the_o true_a effect_n that_o the_o consideration_n of_o your_o former_a sinfulness_n shall_v produce_v shall_v be_v your_o lay_v your_o soul_n low_a and_o make_v they_o humble_a and_o the_o more_o sensible_a of_o that_o indispensable_a need_n you_o have_v of_o christ_n of_o go_v unto_o he_o for_o salvation_n and_o he_o and_o last_o if_o you_o have_v in_o you_o ardent_a desire_n and_o earnest_a endeavour_n to_o win_v other_o to_o christ_n as_o well_o as_o yourselves_o if_o you_o can_v find_v any_o one_o of_o these_o in_o truth_n and_o sincerity_n in_o your_o heart_n it_o will_v be_v a_o very_a good_a evidence_n to_o you_o of_o your_o interest_n in_o christ_n i_o have_v only_o a_o word_n or_o two_o more_o to_o those_o that_o upon_o examination_n do_v real_o find_v themselves_o to_o be_v in_o a_o condition_n without_o jesus_n christ_n let_v i_o leave_v with_o you_o these_o two_o or_o three_o discovery_n of_o your_o sad_a condition_n to_o quicken_v you_o the_o more_o earnest_o in_o your_o pursuit_n after_o he_o 1._o be_v you_o without_o christ_n why_o than_o you_o be_v without_o satisfaction_n and_o contentation_n in_o all_o the_o thing_n you_o enjoy_v here_o in_o this_o world_n what_o solomon_n say_v be_v verify_v in_o you_o that_o your_o eye_n shall_v not_o be_v satisfy_v 8._o with_o see_v of_o grace_n there_o be_v no_o mediator_n christ_n be_v the_o mediator_n only_o of_o the_o new_a covenant_n therefore_o what_o sad_a condition_n be_v thou_o in_o see_v as_o very_o as_o thou_o stand_v here_o now_o so_o thou_o must_v one_o day_n stand_v before_o 10._o god_n tribunal_n to_o answer_v and_o be_v judge_v for_o every_o thing_n thou_o have_v do_v in_o thy_o body_n whether_o it_o be_v good_a or_o evil_n and_o then_o thou_o will_v have_v no_o body_n to_o plead_v for_o thou_o but_o must_v inevitable_o be_v cast_v into_o everlasting_a burn_n 4._o be_v out_o of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n this_o be_v your_o misery_n god_n will_v in_o exactness_n and_o rigour_n of_o justice_n proceed_v against_o you_o for_o your_o sin_n without_o any_o mixture_n of_o mercy_n at_o all_o beloved_n god_n have_v no_o mercy_n without_o his_o covenant_n but_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n he_o be_v a_o god_n gracious_a and_o merciful_a slow_a to_o anger_n 7._o and_o of_o great_a kindness_n abundant_a in_o mercy_n and_o truth_n pardon_v iniquity_n transgression_n and_o sin_n but_o he_o be_v clothe_v with_o justice_n and_o rigour_n to_o all_o that_o be_v without_o this_o covenant_n as_o it_o be_v in_o court_n of_o judicature_n in_o point_n of_o life_n and_o death_n the_o judge_n will_v take_v no_o notice_n whether_o the_o man_n be_v a_o sorrowful_a man_n or_o no_o the_o law_n be_v not_o to_o show_v mercy_n but_o to_o punish_v the_o offence_n the_o law_n do_v not_o inquire_v whether_o the_o man_n be_v penitent_a and_o sorry_a for_o what_o he_o have_v do_v but_o whether_o the_o fact_n be_v do_v or_o no_o if_o it_o be_v he_o must_v die_v for_o it_o there_o be_v no_o remedy_n just_o so_o it_o be_v here_o god_n do_v not_o inquire_v under_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n whether_o you_o be_v sorrowful_a for_o break_v of_o his_o law_n but_o he_o inquire_v whether_o you_o have_v break_v it_o or_o no_o and_o if_o you_o have_v he_o will_v condemn_v thou_o and_o cast_v thou_o into_o hell_n fire_n and_o then_o the_o poor_a soul_n cry_v out_o oh_o lord_n be_v merciful_a to_o i_o this_o once_o it_o shall_v be_v a_o warning_n to_o i_o i_o will_v never_o sin_v against_o thou_o nor_o displease_v thou_o more_o but_o will_v from_o henceforth_o walk_v more_o humble_o and_o holy_o and_o circumspect_o before_o thou_o and_o yet_o all_o this_o that_o thou_o have_v promise_v if_o thou_o be_v able_a to_o perform_v it_o will_v not_o avail_v thou_o for_o god_n will_v hear_v none_o out_o of_o christ_n and_o out_o of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n 5._o a_o man_n out_o of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n he_o have_v no_o true_a and_o special_a title_n to_o any_o of_o the_o blessing_n of_o god_n here_o in_o this_o world_n god_n blessing_n go_v along_o with_o his_o covenant_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v very_o observable_a that_o in_o that_o chapter_n where_o god_n do_v promise_v the_o blessing_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n in_o that_o very_a chapter_n he_o promise_v the_o blessing_n of_o this_o life_n as_o you_o may_v see_v in_o the_o 36._o of_o ezek._n say_v god_n there_o i_o will_v pour_v clean_a water_n 28._o upon_o you_o and_o you_o shall_v be_v clean_a yea_o from_o all_o your_o filthiness_n and_o from_o all_o your_o idol_n will_v i_o cleanse_v you_o a_o new_a heart_n will_v i_o also_o give_v you_o and_o a_o new_a spirit_n will_v i_o put_v within_o you_o and_o will_v take_v away_o the_o stony_a heart_n from_o you_o and_o will_v give_v you_o a_o heart_n of_o flesh_n and_o will_v put_v my_o spirit_n within_o you_o and_o cause_v you_o to_o walk_v in_o my_o statute_n and_o you_o shall_v keep_v my_o judgement_n and_o do_v they_o and_o you_o shall_v dwell_v in_o the_o land_n that_o i_o give_v to_o your_o father_n and_o you_o shall_v be_v and_o will_v incerease_v it_o and_o lay_v no_o famine_n upon_o you_o but_o i_o will_v multiply_v the_o fruit_n of_o the_o tree_n and_o the_o increase_n of_o the_o field_n and_o so_o in_o the_o 10_o 11._o 11_o ver_fw-la of_o that_o chap._n and_o i_o will_v multiply_v man_n upon_o you_o and_o the_o city_n shall_v be_v inhabit_v and_o the_o waste_n shall_v be_v build_v and_o i_o will_v multiply_v upon_o man_n and_o beast_n and_o they_o shall_v increase_v and_o bring_v fruit_n and_o i_o will_v do_v better_o to_o you_o then_o at_o your_o beginning_n and_o you_o shall_v know_v that_o i_o be_o the_o lord_n here_o the_o lord_n entail_v earthly_a blessing_n to_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n intimate_v that_o all_o that_o be_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n they_o have_v a_o title_n not_o only_o to_o all_o spiritual_a but_o to_o temporal_a blessing_n likewise_o but_o no_o wicked_a man_n out_o of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n have_v any_o true_a title_n to_o any_o outward_a blessing_n they_o that_o be_v of_o the_o faithful_a be_v bless_v with_o faithful_a abraham_n and_o enjoy_v outward_a blessing_n as_o a_o blessing_n but_o wicked_a man_n it_o be_v true_a they_o have_v something_o allow_v they_o but_o it_o it_o as_o to_o prisoner_n in_o a_o prison_n they_o have_v something_o to_o keep_v they_o alive_a until_o their_o execution_n and_o so_o wicked_a man_n they_o have_v prison_n allowance_n till_o the_o execution_n day_n 6._o your_o misery_n that_o be_v stranger_n to_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n lie_v in_o this_o god_n will_v not_o give_v acceptance_n to_o any_o of_o your_o service_n though_o you_o may_v do_v as_o much_o for_o the_o matter_n of_o they_o as_o any_o godly_a man_n do_v nay_o thou_o may_v hear_v more_o sermon_n and_o say_v more_o prayer_n and_o perform_v more_o duty_n than_o a_o godly_a man_n do_v and_o yet_o not_o be_v accept_v when_o the_o other_o shall_v as_o you_o may_v see_v in_o gen._n 4._o 4_o 5._o cain_n and_o abel_n they_o both_o of_o they_o bring_v sacrifice_n to_o god_n one_o of_o his_o flock_n and_o the_o other_o of_o his_o ground_n and_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o this_o say_z that_o by_o faith_n abel_n offer_v a_o more_o 4._o excellent_a offering_n then_o cain_n it_o be_v not_o more_o excellent_a in_o regard_n of_o the_o matter_n of_o it_o for_o in_o all_o probability_n and_o likelihood_n cain_n sacrifice_n be_v of_o more_o value_n than_o abel_n for_o his_o be_v but_o a_o few_o young_a lamb_n the_o firstling_n of_o his_o flock_n but_o cain_n be_v of_o the_o first_o fruit_n of_o his_o ground_n and_o yet_o abel_n sacrifice_n be_v accept_v and_o the_o other_o reject_v because_o abel_n be_v a_o godly_a man_n under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n by_o which_o god_n do_v accept_v of_o what_o he_o do_v though_o it_o be_v less_o than_o cain_n and_o so_o solomon_n the_o sacrifice_n of_o the_o 8._o wicked_a be_v a_o abomination_n to_o the_o lord_n but_o the_o prayer_n of_o the_o upright_o be_v his_o delight_n a_o sacrifice_n you_o know_v be_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o costly_a than_o a_o prayer_n for_o that_o cost_v a_o man_n nothing_o but_o his_o breath_n when_o the_o other_o will_v cost_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o money_n and_o yet_o a_o costly_a sacrifice_n be_v hate_v by_o god_n come_v from_o a_o wicked_a man_n when_o a_o penniless_a prayer_n come_v from_o a_o godly_a man_n be_v accept_v so_o that_o under_o a_o covenant_n of_o grace_n though_o you_o do_v less_o for_o the_o matter_n of_o the_o duty_n then_o wicked_a man_n do_v
yet_o you_o shall_v be_v accept_v when_o they_o shall_v be_v reject_v thus_o i_o have_v do_v with_o the_o use_n of_o terror_n in_o lay_v down_o to_o you_o this_o sixfold_a misery_n of_o those_o man_n that_o be_v stranger_n to_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o here_o because_o i_o will_v not_o have_v any_o poor_a soul_n that_o be_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o partaker_n of_o all_o the_o great_a privilege_n of_o it_o to_o go_v away_o with_o a_o sad_a heart_n i_o shall_v only_o leave_v with_o you_o two_o or_o three_o word_n of_o comfort_n to_o they_o you_o child_n of_o the_o covenant_n that_o be_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n let_v not_o your_o heart_n be_v trouble_v at_o what_o have_v be_v say_v this_o day_n concern_v the_o misery_n of_o those_o man_n that_o be_v stranger_n to_o this_o covenant_n and_o to_o bear_v up_o and_o support_v your_o spirit_n i_o shall_v give_v you_o two_o or_o three_o comfortable_a consideration_n 1._o that_o all_o the_o outward_a blessing_n that_o you_o enjoy_v come_v to_o you_o in_o a_o covenant_n way_n god_n have_v give_v you_o these_o blessing_n as_o a_o appendix_n to_o the_o covenant_n and_o by_o virtue_n of_o a_o entail_n to_o his_o covenant_n the_o lord_n never_o give_v you_o a_o common_a blessing_n but_o you_o see_v the_o love_n of_o a_o father_n and_o of_o a_o husband_n and_o of_o a_o friend_n and_o the_o love_n of_o god_n in_o that_o blessing_n and_o therefore_o as_o i_o tell_v you_o before_o in_o that_o very_a chapter_n where_o god_n promise_v the_o blessing_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n he_o promise_v the_o blessing_n of_o this_o life_n too_o as_o a_o entail_v to_o the_o covenant_n wicked_a man_n may_v have_v blessing_n but_o not_o by_o virtue_n of_o a_o promise_n not_o by_o virtue_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n but_o now_o if_o you_o ask_v i_o how_o you_o may_v know_v whether_o the_o blessing_n you_o enjoy_v come_v unto_o you_o by_o virtue_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n i_o answer_v you_o may_v know_v it_o by_o these_o two_o thing_n 1._o in_o case_n you_o do_v use_v and_o employ_v all_o the_o blessing_n you_o receive_v from_o god_n to_o the_o honour_n of_o god_n thus_o abraham_n do_v as_o you_o may_v see_v in_o gen._n 17._o 1_o 2_o 8_o 12._o his_n use_v the_o blessing_n of_o god_n to_o promote_v the_o service_n of_o god_n do_v demonstrate_v that_o those_o blessing_n come_v to_o he_o from_o god_n in_o a_o covenant_n way_n but_o those_o that_o be_v stranger_n to_o this_o covenant_n the_o mercy_n they_o enjoy_v be_v give_v they_o for_o their_o hurt_n 2._o when_o blessing_n be_v as_o cord_n to_o draw_v you_o near_o to_o god_n and_o as_o band_n to_o tie_v you_o fast_o to_o god_n than_o they_o come_v to_o you_o in_o a_o covenant_n way_n as_o in_o jer._n 31._o 11_o 12._o for_o the_o 12._o lord_n have_v redeem_v jacob_n and_o ransom_v he_o from_o the_o hand_n of_o he_o that_o be_v strong_a than_o he_o therefore_o they_o shall_v come_v and_o rejoice_v in_o the_o height_n of_o zion_n and_o shall_v run_v to_o the_o bountifulness_n of_o the_o lord_n even_o for_o the_o wheat_n and_o for_o the_o wine_n and_o for_o the_o oil_n and_o for_o the_o increase_n of_o sheep_n and_o bullock_n etc._n etc._n that_o be_v all_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n shall_v make_v they_o to_o come_v near_o and_o near_o and_o cleave_v close_o to_o god_n you_o then_o that_o do_v enjoy_v your_o share_n of_o the_o blessing_n of_o god_n and_o they_o do_v not_o endee_a you_o and_o draw_v you_o near_o to_o god_n you_o can_v look_v upon_o they_o as_o flow_v in_o upon_o you_o in_o a_o covenant_n way_n 2._o you_o that_o be_v in_o covenant_n with_o god_n know_v this_o for_o your_o comfort_n that_o the_o lord_n do_v accept_v of_o a_o little_a that_o you_o do_v in_o his_o service_n better_a than_o a_o great_a deal_n that_o a_o wicked_a man_n perform_v to_o he_o god_n will_v accept_v of_o a_o few_o turtle_n dove_n of_o you_o when_o he_o will_v not_o accept_v of_o 1000_o ram_n or_o 10000_o river_n of_o oil_n of_o the_o wicked_a he_o will_v accept_v of_o a_o cup_n of_o cold_a water_n give_v to_o a_o righteous_a man_n in_o the_o name_n of_o a_o righteous_a man_n when_o he_o will_v not_o accept_v of_o the_o costly_a sacrifice_n from_o the_o wicked_a oh_o what_o a_o happy_a condition_n be_v thou_o in_o that_o be_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n wicked_a man_n may_v hear_v more_o sermon_n and_o perform_v more_o duty_n and_o say_v more_o prayer_n to_o god_n then_o you_o and_o yet_o in_o all_o their_o duty_n be_v reject_v when_o thou_o be_v accept_v 3._o take_v this_o for_o your_o comfort_n that_o when_o ever_o you_o offend_v god_n and_o provoke_v he_o to_o anger_n you_o have_v a_o mediator_n to_o stand_v between_o god_n and_o you_o though_o you_o be_v guilty_a yet_o you_o have_v a_o advocate_n to_o plead_v your_o cause_n for_o you_o you_o that_o be_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n you_o may_v say_v to_o christ_n your_o mediator_n as_o the_o israelite_n say_v to_o moses_n when_o they_o have_v offend_v god_n go_v thou_o and_o speak_v unto_o god_n for_o we_o so_o may_v you_o say_v when_o you_o have_v nothing_o but_o thunder_v and_o lightning_n and_o tempest_n in_o your_o soul_n and_o the_o flashing_n of_o hell_n fire_n in_o your_o conscience_n than_o you_o may_v say_v to_o christ_n go_v now_o to_o god_n and_o speak_v for_o i_o mediate_a with_o thy_o father_n for_o the_o pardon_n of_o all_o my_o sin_n i_o have_v offend_v god_n oâ—_n intercede_v with_o he_o in_o my_o behalf_n i_o have_v commit_v a_o great_a offence_n oh_o plead_v with_o thy_o father_n and_o beg_v a_o pardon_n for_o i_o thus_o thou_o may_v say_v to_o christ_n be_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n but_o here_o lest_o any_o one_o shall_v lie_v under_o a_o spiritual_a delusion_n and_o think_v himself_o under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n when_o he_o be_v a_o stranger_n to_o it_o lest_o the_o dog_n shall_v snatch_v at_o the_o child_n meat_n i_o shall_v lay_v down_o to_o you_o some_o distinguish_a character_n whereby_o you_o may_v know_v whether_o you_o be_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n or_o no_o and_o before_o i_o make_v entrance_n upon_o this_o i_o will_v only_o premise_v four_o sad_a and_o dismal_a conclusion_n which_o will_v make_v way_n the_o better_a for_o what_o i_o have_v to_o handle_v in_o the_o examination_n 1._o take_v in_o this_o conclusion_n that_o a_o man_n may_v be_v within_o the_o outward_a and_o common_a privilege_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o yet_o be_v without_o the_o save_n and_o spiritual_a privilege_n of_o it_o as_o pardon_v of_o sin_n have_v god_n to_o be_v your_o god_n and_o christ_n to_o be_v your_o saviour_n etc._n etc._n as_o in_o deut._n 29._o 10_o 11_o 12._o 12._o say_v moses_n there_o you_o stand_v this_o day_n all_o of_o you_o before_o the_o lord_n your_o god_n your_o captain_n of_o tribe_n your_o elder_n and_o your_o officer_n with_o all_o the_o man_n of_o israel_n your_o little_a one_o your_o wife_n and_o the_o strange_a that_o be_v in_o thy_o camp_n from_o the_o hewer_n of_o thy_o wood_n unto_o the_o drawer_n of_o thy_o water_n that_o thou_o shall_v enter_v into_o covenant_n with_o the_o lord_n thy_o god_n now_o here_o you_o see_v be_v all_o from_o the_o rich_a to_o the_o poor_a to_o enter_v into_o covevenant_n with_o god_n and_o yet_o it_o be_v not_o imaginable_a that_o all_o these_o do_v partake_v of_o the_o inward_a privilege_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n they_o do_v all_o partake_v of_o circumcision_n which_o be_v the_o seal_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o the_o outward_a privilege_n of_o it_o but_o not_o all_o do_v partake_v of_o the_o inward_a and_o special_a mercy_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n as_o pardon_v of_o sin_n peace_n of_o conscience_n joy_n in_o believe_v god_n to_o be_v their_o god_n and_o christ_n to_o be_v their_o saviour_n and_o so_o in_o rom._n 9_o 4_o 5._o say_v the_o 5._o apostle_n they_o be_v the_o israelite_n to_o who_o pertain_v the_o adoption_n and_o the_o glory_n and_o the_o covenant_n and_o the_o give_v of_o the_o law_n and_o the_o service_n of_o god_n and_o the_o promise_n of_o who_o be_v the_o father_n and_o of_o who_o as_o concern_v the_o flesh_n christ_n come_v these_o be_v very_o great_a privilege_n and_o yet_o say_v the_o text_n in_o vers_fw-la 8._o these_o be_v 8._o not_o all_o the_o child_n of_o god_n though_o they_o have_v the_o external_a blessing_n of_o the_o covenant_n yet_o they_o be_v not_o all_o the_o child_n of_o god_n so_o that_o you_o see_v you_o may_v be_v within_o the_o church_n of_o god_n and_o partake_v of_o the_o outward_a blessing_n
as_o have_v thy_o portion_n and_o interest_n in_o he_o and_o in_o none_o else_o this_o be_v a_o undoubted_a evidence_n that_o you_o do_v belong_v to_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n 3._o for_o god_n to_o be_v your_o god_n it_o note_v god_n sovereignty_n and_o power_n over_o you_o for_o your_o benefit_n the_o lord_n will_v reign_v over_o you_o and_o subdue_v corruption_n in_o you_o and_o quell_v your_o pride_n and_o humble_a your_o heart_n and_o give_v you_o a_o meek_a and_o quiet_a spirit_n if_o you_o find_v that_o god_n be_v you_o in_o these_o three_o particular_n you_o may_v comfort_v your_o heart_n in_o a_o unquestionable_a interest_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n if_o god_n be_v your_o god_n and_o you_o his_o people_n that_o you_o have_v give_v up_o and_o devote_a yourselves_o whole_o to_o the_o service_n of_o god_n in_o every_o thing_n that_o you_o do_v 2._o another_o special_a blessing_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n be_v that_o god_n have_v promise_v to_o sanctify_v and_o renew_v your_o nature_n as_o in_o ezek._n 36._o 26_o 27._o say_v god_n there_o a_o new_a heart_n 27._o also_o will_v i_o give_v you_o and_o a_o new_a spirit_n will_v i_o put_v within_o you_o and_o will_v take_v away_o the_o stony_a heart_n out_o of_o your_o bosom_n and_o will_v give_v you_o heart_n of_o flesh_n and_o i_o will_v put_v my_o spirit_n within_o you_o and_o cause_v you_o to_o walk_v in_o my_o statute_n and_o you_o shall_v keep_v my_o judgement_n and_o do_v they_o god_n will_v not_o only_o give_v we_o life_n for_o our_o happiness_n but_o grace_n for_o our_o holiness_n he_o will_v not_o only_o give_v we_o impute_v righteousness_n for_o our_o justification_n but_o also_o inherent_a righteousness_n for_o our_o sanctification_n now_o therefore_o examine_v yourselves_o have_v your_o nature_n ever_o be_v sanctify_v and_o regenerate_v have_v you_o be_v ever_o wash_v with_o clean_a water_n and_o those_o stain_n of_o sin_n and_o corruption_n wipe_v away_o from_o you_o have_v the_o beasom_n of_o sanctification_n ever_o sweep_v your_o inward_a man_n and_o make_v it_o not_o a_o cave_n for_o every_o unclean_a bird_n to_o lie_v in_o but_o a_o habitation_n fit_a for_o the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o dwell_v in_o if_o it_o be_v so_o you_o have_v a_o real_a right_n to_o and_o interest_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n for_o no_o man_n can_v have_v the_o blessing_n of_o the_o covenant_n but_o he_o must_v have_v a_o be_v in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n it_o be_v very_o observable_a that_o god_n be_v not_o only_o as_o the_o covenant_n represent_v he_o a_o god_n gracious_a and_o merciful_a slow_a to_o anger_n and_o full_a of_o compassion_n etc._n etc._n but_o he_o be_v a_o holy_a god_n as_o well_o as_o a_o merciful_a god_n and_o therefore_o he_o will_v work_v holiness_n in_o we_o and_o expect_v holiness_n from_o we_o if_o ever_o we_o expect_v to_o have_v mercy_n and_o happiness_n from_o he_o never_o lie_v claim_n to_o god_n nor_o expect_v life_n and_o happiness_n from_o he_o as_o he_o be_v a_o merciful_a god_n unless_o you_o resolve_v to_o be_v conformable_a to_o he_o as_o he_o be_v a_o holy_a god_n object_n but_o here_o some_o may_v say_v this_o be_v not_o so_o great_a a_o blessing_n as_o you_o speak_v of_o to_o be_v sanctify_v by_o virtue_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n for_o there_o be_v many_o man_n that_o may_v be_v sanctify_v by_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o yet_o never_o be_v save_v by_o it_o and_o this_o objection_n they_o ground_n upon_o that_o place_n in_o heb._n 10._o 29._o and_o they_o shall_v count_v the_o blood_n of_o the_o covenant_n wherewith_o they_o be_v sanctify_v a_o unholy_a thing_n answ_n i_o answer_v that_o the_o sanctification_n here_o speak_v of_o be_v not_o a_o true_a sanctification_n but_o only_o in_o profession_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o man_n not_o in_o the_o fight_n of_o god_n it_o be_v not_o a_o sanctification_n in_o very_a deed_n and_o in_o truth_n but_o only_o in_o show_n and_o in_o the_o judgement_n of_o man_n 3._o another_o blessing_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n be_v the_o forgiveness_n of_o our_o sin_n as_o in_o jer._n 3._o 34._o they_o shall_v all_o know_v i_o from_o the_o 34._o least_o of_o they_o to_o the_o great_a say_v the_o lord_n for_o i_o will_v forgive_v their_o iniquity_n and_o will_v remember_v their_o sin_n no_o more_o seek_v after_o god_n statute_n and_o endeavour_v after_o holiness_n as_o the_o way_n to_o happiness_n these_o man_n be_v far_o from_o salvation_n and_o the_o hope_n of_o salvation_n too_o 3._o that_o
