suppose_v to_o come_v out_o hereafter_o the_o first_o part_n then_o have_v this_o subject_n the_o spirit_n operation_n do_v contain_v seven_o chapter_n in_o his_o first_o chapter_n he_o explain_v to_o we_o what_o he_o mean_v by_o the_o spirit_n and_o by_o its_o operation_n the_o word_n spirit_n say_v he_o signify_v three_o thing_n the_o mind_n the_o temper_n of_o the_o mind_n the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o he_o understand_v it_o of_o the_o last_o i_o have_v two_o thing_n to_o say_v here_o the_o one_o be_v as_o to_o his_o second_o signification_n the_o temper_n or_o disposition_n of_o the_o mind_n be_v either_o of_o nature_n only_o and_o belong_v to_o the_o spirit_n of_o man_n within_o he_o or_o of_o grace_n and_o belong_v to_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o work_v it_o of_o this_o temper_n the_o author_n must_v be_v understand_v to_o speak_v when_o he_o speak_v of_o the_o spirit_n of_o faith_n fear_v and_o love_n the_o other_o be_v that_o there_o be_v more_o signification_n of_o the_o word_n spirit_n than_o these_o which_o himself_o know_v every_o spirit_n which_o confess_v faith_fw-mi christ_n in_o john_n be_v i_o think_v as_o much_o as_o every_o doctrine_n which_o by_o the_o way_n do_v put_v i_o in_o mind_n to_o say_v thus_o much_o that_o when_o this_o author_n come_v to_o speak_v of_o thing_n which_o be_v common_a head_n and_o only_o require_v a_o grave_n and_o comprehensive_a divine_a to_o marshal_v they_o he_o do_v methinks_v appear_v to_o i_o so_o lank_a as_o i_o can_v tell_v well_o whether_o that_o which_o he_o say_v be_v solid_a or_o no_o because_o i_o be_o sure_a it_o be_v not_o full_a though_o when_o he_o fall_v upon_o several_a particular_a thing_n he_o seem_v to_o look_v through_o they_o well_o by_o the_o operation_n of_o the_o spirit_n he_o understand_v and_o define_v they_o those_o which_o be_v on_o the_o mind_n to_o cause_v certain_a quality_n promise_v in_o the_o gospel_n and_o continue_v in_o all_o age_n i_o have_v two_o thing_n therefore_o to_o say_v here_o likewise_o one_o be_v that_o though_o this_o be_v never_o so_o much_o too_o short_a there_o be_v no_o body_n in_o the_o main_a of_o what_o be_v say_v be_v like_a to_o contradict_v he_o dr._n owen_n by_o the_o spirit_n understand_v the_o holy_a ghost_n as_o
he_o do_v and_o by_o the_o operation_n of_o it_o what_o he_o do_v and_o why_o then_o will_v he_o fall_v foul_a on_o the_o dr._n when_o he_o agree_v with_o he_o in_o the_o substance_n what_o need_n be_v there_o he_o shall_v pursue_v a_o flea_n in_o the_o circumstance_n of_o word_n only_o or_o variety_n of_o expression_n another_o be_v that_o where_o he_o except_v at_o the_o doctor_n for_o allude_v in_o his_o word_n to_o some_o text_n that_o speak_v of_o miraculous_a gift_n and_o so_o can_v be_v apply_v to_o we_o and_o also_o for_o a_o critical_a note_n he_o have_v before_o on_o the_o hebrew_n word_n put_v on_o he_o isa_n 42.1_o from_o whence_o he_o collect_v that_o in_o god_n give_v we_o the_o effect_n of_o his_o spirit_n the_o spirit_n itself_o be_v also_o give_v i_o will_v compound_v with_o this_o author_n the_o doctor_n shall_v submit_v his_o critical_a note_n to_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o prophet_n and_o this_o man_n shall_v let_v the_o doctor_n speak_v but_o the_o same_o thing_n by_o way_n of_o allusion_n to_o scripture_n whether_o they_o be_v prove_v thereby_o or_o not_o which_o other_o divine_n do_v speak_v and_o affirm_v ordinary_o without_o that_o allusion_n in_o his_o second_o chapter_n he_o show_v we_o what_o these_o effect_n be_v for_o the_o produce_v of_o which_o the_o holy_a spirit_n be_v give_v which_o he_o undertake_v to_o do_v here_o from_o that_o text_n luke_n 11.13_o where_o after_o two_o parable_n of_o the_o man_n ask_v three_o loaf_n for_o his_o friend_n and_o of_o a_o son_n ask_v bread_n of_o a_o father_n our_o saviour_n tell_v we_o that_o god_n will_v give_v his_o holy_a spirit_n to_o those_o that_o ask_v he_o from_o hence_o he_o gather_v that_o the_o effect_n for_o which_o god_n give_v his_o spirit_n be_v such_o as_o be_v needful_a because_o it_o be_v bread_n the_o son_n and_o the_o friend_n ask_v and_o profitable_a because_o a_o fish_n and_o egg_n also_o be_v give_v here_o he_o tell_v that_o our_o need_n be_v to_o be_v measure_v by_o the_o end_n that_o the_o end_n be_v our_o salvation_n consequent_o the_o spirit_n operation_n on_o the_o mind_n be_v to_o produce_v all_o those_o effect_n as_o be_v necessary_a to_o eternal_a life_n these_o be_v faith_n knowledge_n all_o virtue_n or_o grace_n which_o make_v we_o practical_a christian_n and_o perseverance_n here_o be_v his_o needful_a effect_n then_o his_o profitable_a and_o not_o necessary_a be_v degree_n of_o goodness_n which_o be_v more_o high_o so_o or_o degree_n of_o knowledge_n that_o be_v less_o profitable_a here_o he_o discourse_n whether_o god_n do_v give_v the_o spirit_n for_o these_o thing_n profitable_a upon_o our_o ask_n and_o tell_v we_o god_n may_v give_v we_o thing_n better_a or_o more_o suitable_a and_o so_o deny_v they_o then_o he_o show_v we_o how_o the_o spirit_n be_v pray_v for_o in_o the_o lord_n prayer_n because_o when_o we_o ask_v for_o any_o grace_n or_o virtue_n we_o ask_v for_o he_o to_o work_v it_o in_o the_o whole_a then_o of_o this_o chapter_n we_o have_v nothing_o against_o the_o doctor_n or_o the_o doctor_n against_o he_o but_o a_o good_a sermon_n i_o suppose_v we_o have_v which_o he_o may_v have_v preach_v somewhere_o and_o adapt_n it_o to_o this_o occasion_n which_o make_v it_o look_v though_o well_o yet_o feat_n and_o unlike_o a_o beat_a divine_a who_o in_o show_v what_o the_o effect_n of_o god_n spirit_n be_v will_v have_v cast_v they_o into_o some_o proper_a and_o full_a order_n and_o then_o prove_v they_o by_o scripture_n and_o quite_o let_v alone_o this_o sermon_n his_o three_o chapter_n be_v about_o regeneration_n which_o he_o make_v room_n for_o by_o a_o objection_n that_o this_o will_v be_v think_v but_o a_o lame_a account_n of_o those_o qualification_n that_o be_v needful_a to_o salvation_n see_v one_o thing_n most_o necessary_a thereunto_o be_v omit_v and_o that_o be_v regeneration_n and_o here_o then_o must_v regeneration_n be_v bring_v in_o and_o show_v we_o that_o it_o be_v not_o such_o a_o thing_n as_o dr._n owen_n make_v it_o but_o be_v comprise_v in_o his_o moral_a grace_n and_o virtue_n regeneration_n then_o as_o a_o state_n he_o define_v it_o be_v to_o become_v a_o sincere_a disciple_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o here_o though_o one_o may_v well_o require_v a_o little_a more_o accuracy_n in_o a_o definition_n there_o be_v no_o body_n like_a to_o differ_v with_o he_o upon_o the_o matter_n the_o doctor_n may_v use_v other_o term_n and_o expression_n and_o he_o use_v these_o but_o they_o both_o intend_v the_o same_o thing_n this_o be_v certain_a he_o that_o do_v righteousness_n be_v bear_v of_o god_n the_o doctor_n belike_o have_v say_v that_o regeneration_n be_v a_o proper_a term_n and_o he_o will_v prove_v it_o to_o be_v metaphorical_a be_v it_o so_o the_o doctor_n must_v be_v candid_o understand_v then_o that_o he_o mean_v it_o be_v a_o proper_a metaphor_n to_o wit_n that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o secret_a and_o powerful_a work_n of_o the_o soul_n signify_v thereby_o as_o do_v bring_v in_o a_o new_a disposion_n into_o the_o inner_a man_n as_o well_o as_o reform_v the_o outward_a life_n which_o be_v that_o only_o in_o effect_n he_o contend_v for_o let_v they_o grant_v say_v the_o doctor_n that_o their_o moral_a reformation_n of_o life_n do_v proceed_v from_o a_o spiritual_a reformation_n of_o our_o nature_n the_o difference_n will_v be_v at_o a_o end_n and_o what_o say_v this_o author_n he_o answer_v this_o difference_n be_v at_o a_o end_n before_o it_o begin_v for_o we_o have_v always_o grant_v it_o and_o why_o be_v the_o difference_n up_o then_o that_o have_v no_o beginning_n or_o cause_n for_o it_o the_o doctor_n be_v perhaps_o too_o warm_a in_o the_o allusion_n but_o the_o meaning_n be_v acknowledge_v the_o same_o with_o he_o who_o be_v as_o it_o be_v quite_o cool_a and_o off_o from_o it_o there_o be_v indeed_o one_o point_n as_o to_o the_o manner_n of_o the_o spirit_n operation_n wherein_o these_o two_o champion_n will_v differ_v but_o that_o belong_v to_o another_o chapter_n here_o he_o speak_v of_o regeneration_n only_o as_o a_o state_n and_o therefore_o i_o pray_v let_v he_o be_v quiet_a yet_o a_o while_n till_o he_o come_v thither_o in_o his_o four_o chapter_n he_o lay_v down_o the_o several_a grace_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n which_o have_v do_v once_o before_o i_o can_v apprehend_v it_o to_o be_v momentous_a in_o his_o make_v two_o chapter_n of_o it_o these_o grace_n then_o again_o be_v faith_n teachableness_n in_o order_n to_o it_o all_o christian_a virtue_n the_o improvement_n of_o they_o progress_n in_o they_o perseverance_n to_o the_o end_n to_o this_o we_o oppose_v nothing_o and_o there_o be_v no_o dissension_n with_o the_o doctor_n the_o doctor_n or_o another_o perhaps_o will_v have_v marshal_v these_o thing_n otherwise_o but_o that_o all_o these_o be_v the_o operation_n of_o god_n spirit_n or_o such_o effect_n for_o which_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v to_o be_v implore_v be_v beyond_o dispute_n among_o we_o what_o he_o have_v thrust_v in_o here_o upon_o that_o subject_n of_o god_n dwell_v in_o good_a man_n i_o take_v to_o be_v another_o excellent_a good_a sermon_n chap._n iii_o of_o assuranee_n and_o pray_v by_o the_o spirit_n the_o subject_n of_o his_o five_o chapter_n with_o indifferency_n whether_o it_o be_v by_o a_o form_n or_o conceive_a prayer_n i_o come_v to_o his_o five_o chapter_n which_o be_v to_o show_v we_o what_o effect_n we_o be_v not_o to_o expect_v from_o the_o spirit_n have_v show_v before_o what_o effect_n as_o he_o reckon_v they_o be_v promise_v by_o it_o and_o there_o be_v three_o pretend_a gift_n he_o say_v which_o be_v none_o of_o these_o effect_n and_o so_o may_v not_o be_v hope_v or_o pray_v for_o upon_o that_o account_n immediate_a revelation_n of_o the_o sense_n of_o any_o scripture_n absolute_a assurance_n of_o our_o particular_a election_n and_o the_o dictate_v of_o extempore_o prayer_n these_o be_v three_o thing_n belike_o he_o design_v to_o have_v a_o sling_n at_o which_o he_o may_v do_v but_o i_o must_v tell_v he_o in_o the_o way_n whether_o any_o thing_n of_o this_o kind_n may_v be_v expect_v from_o the_o holy_a spirit_n or_o not_o i_o be_o not_o satisfy_v with_o his_o argument_n or_o the_o way_n of_o his_o bring_n it_o about_o that_o the_o effect_n for_o which_o we_o be_v to_o pray_v to_o god_n to_o give_v we_o his_o spirit_n be_v only_a thing_n needful_a and_o therefore_o we_o may_v not_o expect_v his_o help_n in_o extemporary_a prayer_n and_o these_o two_o other_o matter_n this_o indeed_o may_v be_v argue_v from_o the_o parable_n in_o the_o context_n that_o the_o gift_n itself_o of_o the_o spirit_n be_v a_o thing_n needful_a a_o gift_n which_o next_o to_o god_n give_v his_o son_n be_v the_o great_a and_o
most_o necessary_a to_o mankind_n for_o as_o christ_n be_v give_v for_o our_o redemption_n the_o spirit_n be_v and_o must_v be_v give_v for_o the_o application_n but_o that_o the_o effect_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v give_v shall_v be_v confine_v by_o he_o to_o these_o only_o he_o mention_n or_o such_o only_a as_o he_o can_v fetch_v scripture_n for_o unless_o he_o can_v bring_v scripture_n also_o to_o say_v there_o be_v no_o more_o be_v such_o reason_n as_o before_o a_o year_n be_v go_v over_o his_o head_n may_v give_v he_o occasion_n to_o believe_v that_o some_o thing_n may_v seem_v strong_a in_o a_o sermon_n that_o be_v not_o fit_a for_o a_o book_n that_o must_v undergo_v a_o discussion_n i_o do_v not_o think_v he_o have_v speak_v this_o as_o a_o close_a polemical_a divine_a nor_o yet_o that_o he_o have_v lay_v down_o the_o method_n of_o those_o benefit_n which_o we_o have_v from_o the_o holy_a spirit_n as_o a_o comprehensive_a preacher_n for_o when_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v not_o only_o our_o sanctifier_n but_o comforter_n and_o promise_v and_o send_v to_o the_o church_n as_o the_o comforter_n it_o be_v strange_a that_o the_o consolation_n of_o the_o spirit_n shall_v be_v leave_v out_o in_o the_o draught_n of_o those_o effect_n which_o we_o be_v to_o expect_v from_o he_o and_o when_o the_o spirit_n be_v first_o give_v to_o a_o man_n to_o unite_v he_o to_o christ_n and_o this_o union_n be_v the_o primary_n effect_n of_o his_o have_v it_o and_o by_o mean_n hereof_o all_o save_a influence_n from_o the_o head_n be_v derive_v this_o by_o another_o will_v not_o have_v be_v forget_v the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v give_v i_o count_v for_o our_o sanctifier_n our_o comforter_n and_o our_o guide_n regeneration_n be_v to_o be_v comprehend_v in_o sanctification_n as_o he_o have_v mention_v whether_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n needful_a be_v a_o question_n not_o needful_a so_o long_o as_o it_o be_v good_a it_o be_v a_o egg_n i_o hope_v to_o argue_v with_o he_o though_o it_o be_v not_o bread_n the_o only_a difficulty_n here_o be_v to_z state_z this_o assurance_n it_o be_v a_o controversal_a point_n and_o his_o one_o term_n absolute_a will_v do_v little_a to_o the_o decision_n when_o our_o first_o divine_n define_v faith_n by_o a_o persuasion_n of_o special_a mercy_n so_o that_o without_o this_o assurance_n they_o must_v think_v a_o man_n can_v not_o be_v save_v this_o be_v the_o most_o dangerous_a extreme_a on_o one_o hand_n and_o that_o no_o man_n at_o all_o without_o revelation_n according_a to_o the_o trent_n doctor_n can_v be_v assure_v that_o he_o be_v in_o god_n favour_n be_v the_o extreme_a on_o the_o other_o but_o for_o the_o state_v this_o assurance_n aright_o between_o the_o protestant_n and_o papist_n to_o be_v a_o certainty_n not_o of_o
