and_o as_o satan_n know_v the_o woman_n to_o be_v most_o easy_a and_o frameable_a to_o be_v wrought_v upon_o at_o his_o first_o temptation_n so_o be_v he_o not_o ignorant_a that_o she_o be_v the_o calling_n age_n condition_n &_o estate_n of_o man_n have_v their_o diverse_a &_o peculiar_a sin_n which_o we_o must_v right_o discern_v howbeit_o of_o what_o sex_n soever_o they_o be_v man_n or_o woman_n of_o what_o complexion_n soever_o the_o be_v of_o what_o knowledge_n to_o discern_v sin_n of_o what_o degree_n of_o commit_v sin_n of_o what_o age_n authority_n wealth_n estate_n or_o meek_o to_o suffer_v and_o wise_o to_o put_v up_o the_o unaduised_a speech_n of_o a_o man_n distemper_v in_o brain_n by_o reason_n of_o some_o burn_a ague_n or_o such_o like_a violent_a and_o none_o know_v the_o will_n of_o god_n but_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o must_v certify_v our_o hearre_n and_o spirit_n of_o the_o same_o and_o hereof_o there_o do_v arise_v that_o which_o we_o take_v as_o the_o four_o note_n when_o we_o find_v it_o in_o ourselves_o to_o wit_n the_o life_n and_o nemblenes_n that_o be_v in_o we_o to_o do_v good_a for_o when_o a_o man_n do_v find_v favour_n from_o god_n for_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n than_o the_o love_n of_o god_n constrain_v he_o that_o joy_n which_o he_o conceive_v enforce_v he_o and_o put_v life_n into_o he_o for_o the_o performance_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v please_v unto_o god_n then_o he_o begin_v to_o find_v himself_o not_o only_o reclaim_v from_o evil_a but_o also_o apply_v and_o frame_v to_o that_o which_o be_v good_a then_o be_v his_o understanding_n inlyghten_v to_o see_v into_o the_o mystery_n of_o godliness_n and_o into_o that_o great_a work_n of_o his_o redemption_n and_o into_o whatsoever_o concern_v the_o save_a health_n of_o his_o soul_n then_o be_v his_o judgement_n reform_v and_o he_o be_v make_v able_a to_o judge_v between_o false_a religion_n and_o true_a between_o the_o work_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o of_o the_o spirit_n between_o that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o that_o which_o be_v evil_a and_o displease_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n then_o be_v his_o affection_n in_o some_o good_a measure_n alter_v his_o desire_n be_v set_v not_o upon_o earthly_a but_o upon_o heavenly_a thing_n his_o joy_n be_v not_o in_o the_o earth_n but_o in_o the_o heaven_n his_o anger_n be_v waste_v and_o spend_v not_o upon_o his_o own_o privae_fw-la cause_n and_o quarrel_n but_o upon_o his_o own_o sin_n and_o upon_o whatsoever_o hinder_v the_o glory_n of_o his_o god_n this_o be_v the_o life_n of_o god_n in_o he_o thus_o he_o live_v that_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n and_o thus_o he_o lead_v his_o life_n continual_o for_o they_o that_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n be_v lead_v by_o the_o spirit_n and_o do_v live_v according_o bring_v forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n but_o this_o have_v weakness_n join_v with_o it_o and_o man_n through_o frailty_n may_v soon_o fall_v and_o therefore_o their_o life_n be_v say_v to_o be_v hide_v in_o christ_n because_o in_o full_a and_o perfect_a manner_n it_o do_v not_o appear_v therefore_o if_o notwithstanding_o these_o frailty_n and_o fall_n we_o will_v know_v whether_o we_o still_o retain_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n we_o must_v search_v ourselves_o and_o try_v our_o heart_n by_o these_o rule_n first_o if_o when_o through_o frailty_n we_o have_v fall_v for_o who_o be_v he_o that_o fall_v not_o we_o will_v then_o know_v whether_o by_o our_o fall_n we_o have_v lose_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n or_o no_o let_v we_o see_v what_o like_v or_o mislykinge_v we_o have_v of_o sin_n for_o it_o after_o our_o fall_n we_o do_v hold_v our_o former_a hatred_n of_o sin_n and_o the_o oftenner_a we_o fall_v the_o more_o thorough_a and_o deadly_a hatred_n we_o conceive_v against_o sin_n undoubted_o that_o frailty_n have_v not_o as_o yet_o deprive_v we_o of_o the_o spirit_n second_o come_v and_o see_v how_o it_o stand_v with_o thy_o sorrow_n for_o so_o long_o as_o thy_o sorrow_n increase_v for_o thy_o sin_n it_o can_v be_v think_v that_o sin_n and_o the_o flesh_n have_v overcome_v and_o utter_o quench_v the_o spirit_n in_o thou_o three_o try_v thy_o care_n and_o if_o thou_o groan_v in_o a_o godly_a care_n both_o how_o thou_o may_v be_v able_a to_o wage_v battle_n against_o sin_n in_o the_o plain_a field_n and_o how_o thou_o may_v prevente_v sin_n in_o all_o his_o policy_n thou_o have_v a_o further_a assurance_n that_o sin_n although_o it_o be_v as_o great_a as_o goliath_n yet_o it_o have_v not_o hitherto_o prevail_v against_o thy_o poor_a and_o little_a david_n i_o say_v against_o those_o few_o and_o small_a grace_n which_o the_o good_a spirit_n of_o god_n have_v bestow_v upon_o thou_o but_o the_o last_o be_v most_o certain_a and_o that_o be_v this_o when_o thou_o be_v careful_a to_o redeem_v that_o which_o by_o thy_o fall_n thou_o have_v lose_v &_o have_v a_o care_n to_o run_v so_o much_o fast_a forward_o by_o how_o much_o more_o thou_o have_v be_v let_v by_o thy_o fall_n than_o it_o do_v appear_v that_o the_o spirit_n be_v in_o thou_o yea_o lively_a and_o mighty_a in_o operation_n and_o such_o as_o shall_v never_o be_v take_v from_o the_o until_o the_o day_n of_o christ._n thus_o may_v we_o in_o some_o good_a and_o competent_a measure_n try_v and_o prove_v whether_o we_o have_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n or_o no_o for_o where_o these_o fruit_n be_v to_o be_v find_v there_o be_v also_o the_o spirit_n of_o god._n for_o further_a confirmation_n whereof_o we_o may_v note_v the_o manner_n of_o speech_n where_o he_o say_v quench_v not_o the_o spirit_n we_o do_v common_o use_v to_o say_v the_o fire_n be_v quench_v when_o the_o light_n and_o heat_n thereof_o be_v take_v away_o and_o indeed_o nothing_o can_v proper_o be_v say_v to_o be_v quench_v but_o the_o fire_n now_o whereas_o the_o apostle_n say_v quench_v not_o the_o spirit_n he_o give_v we_o to_o understande_v that_o the_o spirit_n be_v in_o some_o respect_n like_o unto_o
fire_n therefore_o if_o we_o do_v but_o a_o little_a consider_v of_o the_o nature_n of_o fire_n we_o shall_v a_o great_a deal_n better_a judge_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o among_o other_o these_o property_n we_o find_v to_o be_v in_o the_o fire_n first_o of_o all_o it_o will_v burn_v up_o and_o consume_v thing_n that_o may_v bâ—_n burn_v and_o consume_v and_o therefore_o light_v upon_o shawe_n stubble_n stick_n or_o such_o like_a it_o bring_v they_o to_o ash_n and_o do_v make_v they_o as_o though_o they_o have_v not_o be_v at_o all_o second_o it_o do_v purge_v and_o purify_v those_o thing_n that_o can_v abide_v to_o be_v purge_v and_o this_o it_o do_v first_o by_o take_v away_o the_o superfluity_n of_o dross_n that_o have_v over_o cover_v the_o thing_n to_o be_v purge_v then_o by_o fyne_a the_o thing_n itself_o and_o by_o make_v it_o pure_a and_o pure_a three_o it_o give_v light_a even_o in_o the_o most_o dim_a &_o dark_a place_n and_o last_o of_o all_o it_o give_v heat_n and_o with_o all_o do_v as_o it_o be_v put_v life_n into_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v capable_a of_o life_n for_o while_o a_o man_n be_v freeze_v and_o starve_a for_o cold_a he_o be_v numbde_v and_o as_o it_o be_v without_o life_n but_o be_v broughtto_n the_o fire_n he_o be_v hâ—tt_n he_o be_v reviue_v he_o be_v cheer_v and_o then_o become_v active_a &_o nimble_a these_o be_v the_o property_n of_o fire_n and_o these_o do_v in_o some_o manner_n sort_n resemble_v and_o shadow_v out_o unto_o we_o the_o work_n and_o effect_n of_o the_o spirit_n for_o first_o of_o all_o when_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n seize_v upon_o a_o man_n and_o enter_v into_o his_o soul_n than_o it_o begin_v to_o burn_v to_o waste_v and_o consume_v in_o he_o those_o thing_n that_o will_v be_v waste_v after_o this_o sort_n evil_a affection_n noisome_a lust_n &_o other_o stubble_n which_o be_v in_o man_n by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v consume_v and_o burn_v second_o it_o do_v purge_v we_o from_o gross_a sin_n and_o daily_o more_o and_o more_o do_v purify_v we_o that_o we_o may_v be_v a_o clean_a and_o holy_a vessel_n and_o temple_n for_o he_o to_o rest_n and_o dwell_v in_o three_o it_o be_v a_o shine_a lamp_n ever_o burn_v and_o continual_o give_v light_n unto_o we_o in_o that_o way_n which_o we_o have_v to_o walk_v and_o last_o it_o do_v set_v we_o on_o heat_n and_o inflame_v we_o with_o a_o zeal_n of_o god_n glory_n with_o a_o care_n of_o our_o duty_n and_o with_o a_o love_n of_o all_o mankind_n yea_o withal_o it_o put_v life_n and_o lust_n into_o we_o to_o walk_v in_o that_o good_a way_n which_o it_o do_v lead_v we_o and_o to_o do_v all_o those_o good_a work_n which_o may_v glorify_v god_n or_o be_v commodious_a unto_o man_n thus_o we_o see_v what_o likelihood_n there_o be_v between_o the_o spirit_n and_o fire_n for_o which_o cause_n the_o spirit_n in_o the_o scripture_n be_v compare_v unto_o fire_n nay_o it_o be_v sometime_o call_v fire_n for_o john_n say_v that_o our_o saviour_n christ_n shall_v baptise_v with_o the_o holy_a ghost_n &_o with_o fire_n that_o be_v with_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o be_v like_a unto_o the_o fire_n therefore_o as_o true_o and_o as_o certain_o as_o we_o may_v say_v that_o there_o be_v fire_n where_o we_o see_v straw_n and_o such_o like_a thing_n consume_v or_o gold_n and_o silver_n fine_o purge_v or_o great_a light_n in_o dark_a place_n or_o great_a heat_n in_o body_n that_o be_v numb_a before_n even_o so_o true_o we_o may_v say_v and_o so_o certain_o we_o may_v persuade_v ourselves_o that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v in_o we_o when_o we_o see_v our_o coruption_n consume_v our_o soul_n purge_v from_o the_o dross_n of_o sin_n our_o heart_n enlighten_v and_o make_v hot_a in_o walk_v and_o work_v according_a to_o that_o light_n the_o second_o question_n to_o be_v consider_v be_v question_n whether_o that_o man_n which_o have_v once_o taste_v of_o the_o spirit_n may_v loose_v it_o and_o have_v it_o quench_v in_o he_o to_o this_o it_o may_v be_v say_v that_o because_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n come_v to_o and_o work_v in_o diverse_a man_n diverselie_o in_o diverse_a measure_n therefore_o we_o must_v consider_v of_o the_o diverse_a work_v of_o the_o spirit_n and_o then_o frame_v our_o answer_n according_o first_o then_o there_o be_v a_o light_a and_o lesser_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o may_v be_v quench_v in_o they_o that_o have_v it_o and_o that_o this_o inferior_a or_o lesser_a kind_n of_o work_v may_v be_v take_v away_o appear_v plainelye_o by_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o seed_n which_o our_o savioure_n christ_n propound_v for_o there_o beside_o they_o that_o receive_v the_o word_n into_o good_a ground_n and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n some_o a_o hundred_o some_o thirty_o some_o sixty_o fold_n he_o do_v also_o make_v mention_n of_o some_o other_o that_o receive_v the_o word_n and_o yet_o continue_v not_o and_o what_o have_v not_o these_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o they_o yes_o doubtless_o for_o they_o receive_v the_o word_n yea_o they_o receive_v it_o glad_o &_o that_o which_o be_v more_o they_o believe_v that_o which_o they_o have_v receive_v behold_v then_o three_o fruit_n of_o god_n spirit_n in_o these_o man_n and_o yet_o they_o continue_v not_o for_o they_o believe_v indeed_o but_o their_o faith_n be_v temporary_a it_o last_v but_o for_o a_o time_n and_o after_o a_o time_n it_o vanish_v away_o and_o the_o spirit_n depart_v from_o they_o for_o either_o the_o pleasure_n and_o profit_n of_o this_o life_n do_v draw_v out_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o dry_v they_o up_o or_o else_o the_o fiery_a heat_n of_o persecution_n do_v quite_o consume_v they_o more_o plain_a and_o notable_a for_o this_o purpose_n be_v that_o in_o the_o sixth_o to_o the_o hebrew_n for_o there_o the_o apostle_n faith_n that_o some_o may_v taste_v of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o thereby_o be_v make_v to_o taste_v of_o the_o good_a word_n of_o god_n to_o be_v enlighten_v to_o receive_v heavenly_a gift_n yea_o and_o to_o taste_v of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o life_n to_o come_v and_o what_o then_o sure_o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o if_o such_o fall_n it_o be_v impossible_a they_o shall_v be_v renew_v give_v we_o to_o understand_v that_o even_o they_o which_o have_v receive_v the_o holy_a ghost_n that_o have_v be_v enlighten_v that_o have_v receive_v heavenly_a gift_n &_o have_v taste_v of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o life_n to_o come_v even_o such_o may_v fall_v away_o and_o the_o spirit_n may_v be_v quench_v in_o such_o there_o be_v a_o second_o kind_n of_o work_v of_o the_o spirit_n which_o be_v a_o more_o thorough_a and_o effectual_a work_n which_o can_v never_o be_v take_v away_o from_o they_o that_o have_v receive_v it_o this_o the_o apostle_n peter_n describe_v when_o he_o say_v that_o the_o choose_a of_o god_n be_v beget_v again_o of_o the_o immortal_a seed_n of_o the_o word_n this_o be_v not_o a_o bare_a receive_n or_o a_o light_n taste_v of_o the_o word_n but_o it_o be_v a_o deep_a taste_n of_o the_o same_o whereby_o we_o be_v beget_v and_o bear_v again_o the_o apostle_n john_n set_v down_o a_o other_o note_n of_o it_o say_v that_o they_o that_o be_v thus_o bear_v again_o can_v sin_v that_o be_v they_o can_v make_v a_o occupation_n of_o sin_n they_o cannot_v fall_v flat_a away_o by_o sin_n and_o why_o even_o because_o the_o the_o seed_n of_o god_n abide_v in_o they_o even_o that_o seed_n wherewith_o they_o be_v beget_v to_o a_o lively_a hope_n of_o life_n even_o that_o seed_n do_v abide_v and_o will_v abide_v unto_o the_o end_n who_o so_o be_v beget_v again_o by_o this_o seed_n and_o have_v this_o seed_n abide_v in_o he_o the_o spirit_n have_v wrought_v that_o in_o he_o which_o shall_v not_o be_v take_v from_o he_o and_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n christ_n say_v the_o word_n that_o i_o speak_v be_v spirit_n and_o life_n and_o in_o a_o other_o place_n he_o say_v that_o none_o shall_v take_v his_o sheep_n from_o he_o for_o the_o father_n be_v mighty_a than_o all_o and_o therefore_o in_o another_o place_n he_o say_v that_o it_o be_v impossible_a that_o the_o elect_v shall_v be_v seduce_v thus_o than_o we_o see_v the_o question_n be_v answer_v namely_o that_o there_o be_v a_o inferior_a work_n which_o may_v be_v lose_v and_o a_o more_o effectual_a work_v of_o the_o spirit_n which_o can_v never_o be_v take_v away_o from_o they_o that_o have_v it_o and_o this_o must_v not_o seem_v strange_a to_o we_o neither_o must_v we_o be_v offend_v that_o the_o lord_n shall_v take_v some_o and_o leave_v other_o or_o that_o he_o shall_v begin_v in_o some_o and_o not_o bring_v his_o
lord_n will_v not_o take_v away_o his_o holy_a spirit_n from_o he_o how_o can_v these_o two_o stand_v together_o first_o to_o pray_v that_o a_o new_a spirit_n may_v be_v create_v in_o he_o and_o then_o that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n may_v not_o be_v take_v from_o he_o sure_o the_o spirit_n itself_o be_v still_o in_o he_o and_o therefore_o he_o pray_v that_o it_o may_v not_o be_v take_v from_o he_o but_o the_o grace_n &_o gracious_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n they_o be_v dead_a and_o go_v and_o therefore_o he_o pray_v that_o they_o may_v be_v renew_v in_o he_o by_o this_o than_o we_o see_v that_o the_o very_a chief_a grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n may_v be_v quench_v even_o in_o the_o most_o godly_a when_o they_o fall_v into_o sin_n but_o yet_o that_o no_o liberty_n may_v be_v take_v hereby_o let_v we_o a_o little_a consider_v what_o grief_n and_o punishment_n they_o procure_v to_o themselves_o that_o do_v by_o any_o mean_n loose_v the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n first_o of_o all_o we_o must_v know_v that_o though_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n can_v be_v get_v by_o our_o labour_n yet_o it_o cause_v we_o much_o labour_n and_o we_o must_v undergo_v much_o travel_n and_o suffer_v much_o trouble_n before_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n do_v take_v possession_n of_o we_o now_o when_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v lose_v all_o this_o our_o labour_n seem_v to_o be_v lose_v and_o what_o grief_n be_v it_o to_o see_v the_o whole_a labour_n and_o travail_v of_o a_o man_n to_o vanish_v and_o come_v to_o nothing_o second_o when_o a_o man_n receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o by_o the_o same_o spirit_n be_v assure_v that_o his_o sin_n be_v forgive_v he_o and_o that_o he_o be_v in_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n there_o do_v arise_v in_o his_o heart_n a_o great_a joy_n in_o the_o holy_a ghost_n a_o joy_n i_o say_v that_o be_v unspeakable_a and_o glorious_a and_o this_o joy_n be_v lose_v and_o go_v when_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n spirit_n be_v go_v with_o how_o great_a grief_n and_o woe_n they_o know_v that_o in_o any_o measure_n have_v taste_v of_o it_o again_o when_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v choke_v in_o man_n than_o they_o have_v no_o hart_n to_o do_v good_a they_o have_v no_o affection_n to_o goodness_n but_o all_o be_v go_v and_o they_o be_v make_v for_o the_o time_n as_o it_o be_v a_o unprofitable_a burden_n of_o the_o earth_n what_o grief_n can_v be_v great_a than_o this_o what_o sorrow_n can_v sink_v more_o deep_a then_o that_o a_o good_a man_n shall_v be_v clean_o withhold_v from_o do_v good_a moreover_o it_o be_v sure_a that_o when_o the_o gift_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v in_o this_o sort_n go_v than_o he_o that_o be_v most_o righteous_a before_o may_v soon_o fall_v into_o great_a sin_n yea_o and_o which_o be_v more_o they_o shall_v also_o suffer_v the_o reproach_n of_o their_o sin_n for_o this_o be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o covenant_n that_o god_n make_v with_o he_o that_o though_o he_o will_v not_o take_v his_o mercy_n utter_o from_o they_o yet_o he_o will_v visit_v their_o sin_n with_o the_o rod_n and_o their_o iniquity_n with_o scourge_n and_o what_o grief_n this_o be_v the_o example_n of_o god_n child_n may_v show_v we_o what_o grief_n be_v it_o to_o noah_n become_v a_o laugh_a stock_n to_o his_o own_o son_n what_o heart-breaking_n to_o david_n by_o his_o own_o son_n to_o be_v thrust_v from_o his_o kingdom_n so_o grievous_a be_v those_o punishment_n lay_v upon_o they_o that_o if_o without_o any_o respect_n of_o hell_n or_o heaven_n we_o can_v consider_v of_o they_o we_o have_v rather_o want_v all_o the_o pleasure_n of_o sin_n which_o they_o enjoy_v than_o we_o will_v bear_v the_o reproach_n and_o feel_v the_o pain_n which_o they_o suffer_v last_o of_o all_o when_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v once_o decay_v they_o can_v never_o be_v repair_v and_o recover_v but_o with_o much_o sorrow_n and_o great_a danger_n for_o it_o can_v but_o breed_v much_o sorrow_n of_o heart_n to_o remember_v his_o former_a sin_n to_o examine_v and_o see_v the_o greatness_n of_o they_o to_o apply_v god_n judgement_n to_o they_o and_o to_o provoke_v himself_o to_o sorrow_n for_o they_o this_o be_v as_o it_o be_v to_o go_v through_o the_o pike_n and_o through_o a_o purgatory_n in_o this_o present_a life_n and_o yet_o this_o must_v be_v do_v before_o we_o can_v recover_v god_n grace_n again_o again_o it_o be_v a_o very_a dangerous_a thing_n for_o in_o such_o case_n man_n be_v bring_v as_o it_o be_v with_o jonas_n into_o the_o bottom_n of_o the_o sea_n and_o as_o david_n say_v into_o the_o deep_a water_n so_o that_o all_o the_o surge_n and_o wave_n do_v pass_v and_o flow_v over_o he_o now_o we_o know_v what_o danger_n it_o be_v for_o a_o man_n to_o be_v thrust_v over_o head_n and_o ear_n into_o the_o deep_a water_n and_o therefore_o they_o that_o be_v in_o such_o a_o case_n be_v in_o great_a danger_n wherefore_o all_o these_o thing_n consider_v the_o loss_n of_o all_o our_o labour_n the_o loss_n of_o all_o true_a joy_n the_o unfitnesse_n to_o do_v good_a the_o readiness_n to_o sin_n the_o grief_n and_o danger_n that_o ensue_v thereof_o will_n or_o at_o the_o least_o wise_a may_v cause_v we_o to_o be_v ware_n how_o we_o quench_v the_o spirit_n and_o this_o be_v the_o use_n of_o the_o doctrine_n in_o humblinge_a of_o of_o we_o which_o also_o do_v furthermore_o serve_v to_o comfort_v we_o know_v that_o we_o may_v suffer_v a_o great_a decay_n of_o god_n grace_n yet_o by_o the_o rod_n or_o by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n or_o by_o both_o they_o shall_v be_v renew_v in_o we_o again_o and_o thus_o much_o of_o this_o commandment_n that_o the_o apostle_n give_v here_o that_o we_o shall_v not_o quench_v the_o spirit_n finis_fw-la the_o second_o send_v down_o upon_o the_o apostle_n in_o which_o sermon_n the_o apostle_n have_v prick_v their_o conscience_n which_o show_v they_o their_o sin_n tell_v they_o of_o a_o surety_n that_o their_o iniquity_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o christ_n his_o death_n whereby_o a_o certain_a care_n begin_v to_o be_v wrought_v in_o they_o insomuch_o that_o be_v thus_o trouble_v they_o inquire_v and_o say_v man_n and_o brethren_n what_o shall_v we_o do_v whereupon_o afterward_o follow_v the_o second_o sermon_n of_o peter_n wherein_o he_o exhort_v they_o to_o continue_v in_o their_o repentance_n &_o teach_v we_o that_o if_o our_o sorrow_n be_v good_a we_o must_v go_v forward_o therein_o further_o he_o show_v they_o to_o this_o end_n that_o they_o must_v believe_v that_o beleve_v they_o may_v be_v baptize_v that_o be_v baptize_v they_o may_v receive_v the_o gift_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n last_o it_o be_v manifest_a how_o they_o hear_v that_o sermon_n first_o receive_v the_o doctrine_n and_o the_o apostle_n who_o be_v never_o bring_v up_o in_o school_n speak_v with_o diverse_a tongue_n which_o when_o the_o multitude_n hear_v some_o be_v say_v to_o marvel_n and_o to_o be_v astonish_v some_o mock_v they_o and_o say_v they_o be_v full_a of_o new_a wine_n but_o when_o peter_n with_o great_a boldness_n of_o spirit_n have_v in_o this_o sermon_n which_o he_o make_v set_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n against_o their_o false_a accusation_n and_o have_v preach_v against_o their_o
pride_n and_o haughtiness_n of_o mind_n which_o be_v a_o privy_a evil_n and_o hardly_o will_v be_v beat_v into_o the_o head_n of_o they_o that_o be_v infect_v therewith_o but_o sure_o it_o be_v that_o we_o will_v never_o be_v so_o grieve_v for_o the_o loss_n of_o a_o thing_n if_o we_o do_v not_o too_o much_o desire_v it_o and_o too_o immoderate_o use_v it_o whilst_o we_o have_v it_o john_n 12_o 42._o which_o sin_n of_o haughtiness_n the_o lord_n see_v in_o his_o child_n that_o they_o be_v more_o humble_v with_o the_o losseof_o worldly_a credit_n then_o with_o the_o sense_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o the_o loss_n of_o their_o glory_n â—ee_n strike_v they_o with_o the_o want_n of_o that_o thing_n which_o be_v most_o precious_a unto_o they_o because_o they_o make_v no_o conscience_n of_o that_o honour_n which_o be_v most_o precious_a unto_o he_o wherefore_o this_o be_v the_o best_a remedy_n rather_o to_o be_v grieve_v that_o we_o feel_v not_o our_o sin_n to_o be_v pardon_v with_o god_n then_o that_o we_o be_v know_v to_o be_v sinner_n among_o man_n and_o that_o we_o be_v ready_a to_o shame_v ourselves_o that_o god_n may_v have_v the_o glory_n acknowledge_v shame_n and_o confusion_n and_o the_o whole_a hell_n of_o temptation_n to_o be_v due_a unto_o we_o and_o glory_n praise_n &_o compassion_n to_o be_v only_o the_o lord_n for_o this_o be_v a_o special_a mark_n of_o the_o child_n of_o god_n by_o temptation_n right_o humble_v when_o he_o be_v ready_a to_o shame_v himself_o for_o his_o sin_n that_o he_o may_v glorify_v god_n in_o his_o mercy_n 3_o unto_o one_o that_o think_v himself_o to_o have_v â—inned_v against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n ghost_n he_o say_v satan_n temptation_n follow_v our_o affection_n for_o if_o we_o light_o account_v of_o sin_n he_o blear_v our_o eye_n still_o with_o god_n mercy_n if_o we_o begin_v to_o make_v a_o conscience_n of_o sin_n he_o load_v we_o with_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n be_v as_o ready_a now_o to_o aggravate_v the_o sin_n more_o than_o it_o be_v in_o itself_o as_o before_o he_o will_v extenuate_v it_o to_o make_v it_o seem_v less_o than_o it_o be_v howbeit_o say_v he_o to_o the_o man_n thus_o afflict_v i_o will_v say_v unto_o you_o as_o samuel_n say_v to_o the_o people_n after_o they_o have_v confess_v themselves_o to_o have_v sin_v against_o god_n with_o a_o great_a sin_n true_a it_o be_v say_v samuel_n not_o flatter_v they_o in_o their_o iniquity_n you_o have_v sin_v great_o notwithstanding_o if_o you_o will_v fear_v the_o lord_n and_o serve_v he_o and_o hear_v his_o voice_n and_o not_o disobey_v the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n you_o shall_v follow_v the_o lord_n your_o god_n but_o if_o you_o will_v not_o obey_v the_o voice_n of_o the_o lord_n but_o disobey_v the_o lord_n mouth_n sin_n be_v against_o knowledge_n but_o of_o humane_a frailty_n some_o be_v against_o knowledge_n of_o a_o rebellious_a obstinacy_n these_o last_o be_v the_o persecution_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n as_o he_o be_v the_o power_n of_o god_n those_o first_o be_v not_o so_o precise_o against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n but_o against_o god_n the_o father_n the_o son_n &_o the_o holy_a ghost_n the_o one_o which_o may_v be_v repent_v of_o be_v remissible_a the_o other_o which_o be_v without_o repentance_n be_v irremissible_a wherefore_o in_o that_o you_o quake_v and_o be_v afraid_a lest_o this_o sin_n be_v in_o you_o &_o will_v rejoice_v in_o god_n if_o it_o be_v not_o in_o you_o if_o you_o purpose_v to_o leave_v your_o former_a sin_n &_o in_o truth_n henceforth_o turn_v unto_o the_o lord_n it_o you_o in_o time_n in_o the_o mean_a time_n assure_v yourself_o that_o the_o great_a faith_n be_v when_o there_o be_v least_o feeling_n because_o it_o be_v easy_a for_o every_o one_o in_o glorious_a feeling_n &_o joy_n unspeakable_a to_o believe_v but_o when_o a_o man_n feel_v no_o sensible_a comfort_n in_o the_o lord_n can_v notwithstanding_o believe_v in_o the_o lord_n &_o by_o say_v wait_v on_o he_o this_o man_n faith_n be_v very_o great_a 5_o he_o give_v this_o advice_n to_o one_o against_o the_o deadness_n of_o the_o mind_n that_o overtake_v the_o godly_a first_o search_v the_o cause_n whether_o it_o be_v for_o some_o evil_a thing_n do_v or_o for_o some_o good_a thing_n not_o do_v &_o so_o leave_v some_o mean_n of_o salvation_n unused_a whether_o for_o some_o sin_n see_v but_o not_o repent_v of_o or_o some_o sin_n repent_v of_o but_o not_o sound_o or_o for_o unthankfulnes_n second_o use_v the_o remedy_n please_v not_o yourself_o in_o it_o but_o rouse_v up_o yourself_o as_o from_o a_o slumber_n which_o willing_o you_o will_v shake_v from_o you_o call_v to_o mind_n the_o special_a &_o great_a mercy_n of_o god_n use_v the_o mean_n thirdlie_o in_o the_o mean_n offer_v yourself_o to_o god_n wait_v â—umbly_o &_o patient_o for_o the_o time_n of_o deliverance_n neither_o esteem_v to_o much_o or_o to_o little_a of_o your_o affliction_n 6_o to_o one_o that_o complain_v of_o the_o hardness_n of_o his_o hart_n he_o say_v you_o must_v wait_v for_o comfort_n &_o know_v that_o you_o can_v now_o no_o more_o judge_v of_o yourself_o than_o a_o man_n sleep_v can_v judge_v of_o thing_n which_o he_o do_v wake_v or_o a_o man_n wander_v in_o the_o dark_a can_v discern_v of_o bright_a colour_n for_o as_o the_o one_o may_v while_o he_o be_v wake_v do_v excellent_a thing_n and_o yet_o now_o neither_o himself_n know_v of_o they_o nor_o any_o other_o can_v espy_v they_o in_o he_o &_o the_o other_o may_v be_v environ_v with_o fresh_a and_o flourish_a colour_n &_o yet_o for_o want_v of_o light_n can_v have_v no_o use_n of_o his_o eye_n nor_o pleasure_n in_o the_o object_n so_o you_o have_v do_v great_a good_a thing_n whilst_o god_n give_v you_o a_o wake_a heart_n to_o put_v they_o in_o practice_n and_o the_o light_n of_o his_o spirit_n to_o discern_v his_o grace_n in_o you_o though_o now_o you_o have_v neither_o the_o sight_n nor_o sense_n of_o they_o and_o this_o be_v the_o thing_n that_o deceive_v and_o disquiet_v many_o they_o look_v for_o that_o discern_a of_o themselves_o when_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v more_o cold_a which_o they_o have_v when_o god_n spirit_n wrought_v in_o the_o sweet_a &_o full_a measure_n in_o they_o and_o because_o there_o be_v some_o intermission_n of_o the_o work_n of_o their_o new_a birth_n they_o think_v there_o be_v a_o â—lat_a amission_n in_o they_o of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n but_o as_o it_o be_v a_o token_n of_o a_o mind_n to_o presumptuous_a &_o infatuate_v in_o time_n of_o a_o dead_a security_n to_o persuade_v ourselves_o still_o of_o that_o safety_n in_o have_v those_o grace_n which_o sometime_o we_o have_v so_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n of_o a_o mind_n abject_a &_o too_o much_o despair_v to_o think_v that_o because_o we_o have_v not_o in_o present_a feeling_n these_o joy_n glorious_a &_o unspeakable_a which_o we_o have_v have_v therefore_o we_o never_o have_v they_o
