and_o sure_o in_o a_o short_a time_n he_o prevail_v great_o on_o their_o weakness_n herein_o and_o bring_v in_o much_o disorder_n and_o abuse_v among_o they_o yea_o such_o gross_a abuse_n that_o they_o poison_v their_o holy_a assembly_n verse_n 17._o they_o come_v together_o not_o for_o profit_n but_o for_o hurt_v whereas_o this_o sacrament_n be_v ordain_v for_o their_o profit_n and_o good_a by_o this_o mean_v it_o turn_v to_o their_o hurt_n such_o gross_a abuse_n they_o be_v as_o bring_v down_o god_n sensible_a judgement_n upon_o they_o verse_n 30._o for_o this_o cause_n many_o be_v a_o horrible_a abuse_n in_o the_o holy_a and_o religious_a feast_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n the_o apostle_n so_o soon_o as_o he_o hear_v of_o these_o abuse_n in_o zeal_n for_o god_n glory_n in_o conscience_n of_o his_o own_o duty_n and_o in_o a_o holy_a jealousy_n for_o the_o pure_a use_n of_o the_o lord_n ordinance_n and_o in_o a_o fatherly_a care_n which_o he_o have_v over_o these_o corinthian_n who_o he_o have_v late_o beget_v to_o the_o faith_n present_o take_v a_o course_n to_o reform_v and_o redress_v these_o abuse_n and_o as_o the_o nature_n of_o all_o right_a and_o true_a reformation_n do_v require_v that_o when_o thing_n be_v out_o of_o square_a they_o be_v to_o be_v refine_v and_o renew_v according_a to_o the_o first_o original_a so_o the_o apostle_n be_v to_o redress_v the_o abuse_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n among_o they_o he_o bring_v they_o back_o to_o the_o first_o institution_n to_o the_o first_o lord_n supper_n that_o ever_o be_v and_o by_o that_o pattern_n frame_v his_o reformation_n and_o there_o he_o rehearse_v the_o institution_n verse_n 23._o this_o bread_n be_v my_o body_n etc._n etc._n and_o this_o cup_n be_v my_o blood_n etc._n etc._n there_o be_v the_o repetition_n of_o the_o institution_n the_o application_n for_o reformation_n be_v in_o the_o 26._o verse_n for_o as_o often_o as_o you_o eat_v of_o this_o bread_n and_o drink_v of_o this_o cup_n you_o show_v forth_o the_o lord_n death_n till_o he_o come_v the_o sum_n of_o all_o so_o far_o as_o it_o concern_v our_o present_a purpose_n be_v brief_o this_o as_o if_o the_o apostle_n shall_v have_v say_v to_o these_o corinthian_n o_o you_o corinthian_n you_o be_v much_o to_o blame_v that_o you_o suffer_v yourselves_o to_o be_v so_o stain_v with_o so_o many_o corruption_n in_o the_o lord_n supper_n by_o name_n this_o be_v one_o that_o you_o tarry_v not_o one_o for_o another_o to_o communicate_v together_o but_o one_o prevent_v another_o the_o rich_a eat_v before_o the_o poor_a come_v as_o if_o we_o have_v more_o care_n of_o our_o belly_n than_o of_o god_n religion_n and_o christ_n suffering_n this_o be_v a_o gross_a abuse_n it_o be_v not_o so_o in_o the_o beginning_n in_o the_o first_o supper_n that_o christ_n institute_v than_o all_o the_o disciple_n be_v present_a and_o do_v love_o communicate_v together_o and_o therefore_o if_o ever_o you_o look_v to_o celebrate_v the_o lord_n supper_n with_o comfort_n and_o benefit_n to_o your_o own_o soul_n you_o must_v do_v as_o they_o do_v reform_v this_o error_n and_o tarry_v one_o for_o another_o consider_v more_o particular_o what_o a_o special_a item_n the_o lord_n jesus_n give_v they_o then_o do_v this_o in_o remembrance_n of_o i_o verse_n 23_o 24._o whereby_o he_o enjoin_v all_o that_o come_v to_o the_o lord_n supper_n that_o their_o heart_n and_o mind_n be_v take_v up_o and_o whole_o set_v upon_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o death_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n and_o all_o their_o passage_n in_o and_o about_o the_o sacrament_n must_v show_v forth_o and_o carry_v a_o relish_n of_o it_o you_o must_v not_o mind_v your_o meat_n and_o drink_n and_o hunger_n and_o thirst_n as_o this_o abuse_n prove_v you_o do_v no_o no_o your_o mind_n must_v be_v whole_o bend_v on_o christ_n death_n and_o sure_o if_o you_o be_v spiritual_o affect_v and_o mind_n that_o sound_o as_o you_o ought_v you_o will_v have_v little_a mind_n of_o your_o belly_n but_o you_o will_v mind_v the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n and_o show_v forth_o his_o death_n till_o he_o come_v therefore_o reform_v yourselves_o and_o purge_v out_o this_o corruption_n this_o be_v the_o consistence_n and_o dependence_n of_o the_o text._n the_o second_o thing_n be_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o word_n themselves_o for_o as_o often_o as_o you_o shall_v eat_v of_o this_o bread_n and_o drink_v of_o this_o cup_n you_o show_v the_o lord_n death_n till_o he_o come_v there_o be_v no_o great_a difficulty_n in_o the_o word_n yet_o for_o plainness_n sake_n we_o will_v go_v over_o they_o with_o some_o familiar_a and_o easy_a exposition_n whereby_o also_o we_o shall_v make_v way_n to_o our_o observation_n these_o word_n in_o the_o 26_o verse_n be_v paul_n own_o word_n and_o not_o christ_n the_o word_n before_o verse_n 26._o and_o 25._o be_v christ_n own_o word_n but_o these_o be_v paul_n in_o the_o diverse_a thing_n but_o first_o to_o confirm_v it_o and_o give_v testimony_n to_o the_o truth_n of_o it_o second_o to_o expound_v it_o and_o make_v it_o plain_a for_o their_o understanding_n three_o to_o apply_v it_o to_o they_o and_o consequent_o to_o all_o the_o faithful_a as_o be_v so_o mean_v by_o our_o saviour_n himself_o and_o not_o to_o his_o disciple_n only_o and_o so_o he_o perform_v the_o office_n of_o a_o faithful_a minister_n of_o jesus_n christ_n which_o be_v to_o confirm_v his_o word_n as_o a_o witness_n to_o expound_v they_o as_o a_o interpreter_n and_o to_o apply_v it_o to_o they_o as_o a_o messenger_n send_v to_o they_o for_o that_o purpose_n it_o be_v say_v here_o in_o the_o first_o place_n as_o often_o as_o you_o eat_v which_o contain_v a_o intimation_n that_o they_o do_v often_o communicate_v and_o withal_o a_o admonition_n that_o it_o be_v a_o necessary_a duty_n to_o communicate_v often_o it_o be_v speak_v of_o here_o as_o a_o matter_n commendable_a in_o they_o and_o therefore_o imitable_a in_o we_o for_o he_o will_v never_o have_v enjoin_v a_o second_o duty_n upon_o it_o but_o that_o he_o do_v approve_v the_o first_o they_o must_v not_o think_v it_o manner_n esay_n 53._o from_o the_o first_o to_o the_o seven_o verse_n he_o that_o of_o all_o the_o prophet_n speak_v most_o plain_o of_o he_o set_v he_o forth_o principal_o in_o regard_n of_o his_o sinner_n thus_o affect_v with_o the_o meditation_n of_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n last_o this_o teach_v we_o what_o manner_n of_o remembrance_n of_o christ_n death_n it_o be_v we_o must_v labour_v for_o it_o must_v be_v both_o religious_a and_o affectionate_a the_o jew_n remember_v christ_n death_n but_o not_o religious_o they_o do_v it_o in_o scorn_n and_o hatred_n of_o he_o hypocrite_n remember_v christ_n death_n and_o that_o as_o a_o matter_n of_o religion_n as_o they_o profess_v but_o it_o be_v without_o affection_n and_o without_o truth_n but_o thou_o that_o desire_v to_o remember_v christ_n right_o and_o save_o thou_o must_v labour_v and_o see_v that_o thou_o remember_v he_o religious_o and_o affectionate_o
only_o thus_o but_o they_o carry_v it_o about_o with_o they_o when_o they_o travel_v in_o the_o street_n and_o other_o place_n as_o a_o preservative_n against_o sickness_n and_o other_o evil_n these_o and_o such_o other_o like_o foppery_n be_v use_v in_o the_o popish_a church_n upon_o this_o false_a ground_n that_o be_v once_o dedicate_v to_o the_o use_n of_o the_o sacrament_n as_o they_o suppose_v it_o must_v needs_o always_o have_v the_o same_o force_n and_o power_n so_o long_o as_o it_o continue_v we_o may_v refer_v it_o to_o the_o judgement_n of_o any_o indifferent_a understand_a man_n to_o judge_v whether_o he_o think_v they_o or_o we_o do_v come_v near_a to_o the_o meaning_n and_o true_a institution_n of_o christ_n we_o be_v sure_a that_o christ_n take_v bread_n and_o command_v we_o so_o to_o do_v to_o take_v the_o bread_n to_o bless_v it_o break_v it_o and_o distribute_v it_o but_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o he_o never_o command_v it_o to_o be_v carry_v about_o for_o any_o such_o superstitious_a use_n as_o they_o do_v i_o do_v not_o doubt_v but_o there_o be_v many_o that_o have_v occasion_n to_o travel_v into_o place_n where_o these_o and_o such_o like_a superstition_n be_v use_v if_o they_o have_v any_o understanding_n or_o any_o taste_n of_o religion_n they_o will_v grow_v into_o a_o great_a hatred_n and_o detestation_n of_o popery_n in_o see_v that_o which_o they_o do_v than_o we_o do_v or_o can_v do_v by_o the_o hear_n of_o these_o thing_n and_o therefore_o if_o any_o shall_v come_v to_o see_v any_o such_o thing_n labour_v to_o be_v fence_v with_o this_o the_o lord_n supper_n the_o bread_n and_o the_o wine_n he_o call_v they_o by_o their_o own_o proper_a name_n eat_v this_o bread_n and_o drink_v this_o cup_n that_o be_v this_o wine_n he_o call_v they_o i_o say_v by_o their_o own_o proper_a name_n that_o be_v by_o the_o name_n of_o the_o sign_n not_o by_o the_o name_n of_o the_o thing_n signify_v he_o do_v not_o say_v as_o often_o as_o you_o the_o proportion_n between_o the_o sign_n and_o the_o thing_n signify_v require_v as_o much_o what_o be_v signify_v by_o the_o bread_n and_o wine_n the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n and_o they_o have_v a_o active_a power_n and_o virtue_n to_o cherish_v and_o nourish_v our_o fowl_n to_o eternal_a life_n and_o therefore_o the_o bread_n and_o wine_n must_v be_v such_o in_o the_o sacrament_n as_o have_v power_n also_o to_o nourish_v the_o body_n to_o a_o temporal_a life_n but_o if_o only_a the_o show_n of_o bread_n and_o wine_n be_v there_o present_a then_o there_o be_v no_o power_n to_o nourish_v for_o it_o be_v the_o substance_n of_o the_o bread_n that_o yield_v power_n by_o the_o blessing_n of_o god_n to_o sustain_v life_n the_o maintenance_n of_o our_o life_n arise_v
