At Theobalds the 12. of April 1622. The Copy of a Reference from the Kings most Excellent Maiesty As also a Letter from the Right Honourable Lords of his Maiesties most Honourable Priuy Councell to the most Reuerend Fathers in God the Lords Arch-Bishops of Canterbury and Yorke their Graces HIs Maiesty is graciously pleased That the Lords Archbishops of Canterbury and Yorke doe in their seuerall Prouinces proceed according to the Letters of the Lords of the Councell bearing date the last of Iune 1621. aswell in recommending Captaine Whitbournes discourse concerning New-found-land so as the same may be distributed to the seuerall Parishes of this Kingdome for the incouragement of Aduenturers vnto the Plantation there As also by furthering in the most fauorable and effectuall maner they can the collections to be thereupon made in all the said Parishes towards the charge of printing and distributing those Bookes and the said Captaine Whitbournes good indeuours and seruice with expence of his time and meanes in the aduancing of the said Plantation and his seuerall great losses receiued at Sea by Pyrats and otherwise of which his Maiesty hath beene credibly certified And further his Maiesties pleasure is that the said Captaine Whitbourne shall haue the sole printing of his booke for one and twenty yeares God saue the King AFter our very hearty Commendations to your good Lordships Whereas Captaine Richard Whitbourne of Exmouth in the County of Deuon Gentleman hauing spent much time in New-found-land whither he hath made sundry voyages and some by expresse Commissions hath set downe in wryting diuers good obseruations and notes touching the state and condition of that Country and the plantation there which being by order from vs now printed It is desired to be published throughout the Kingdome for the furthering and aduancement of the said plantation and to giue incouragement to such as shal be willing to aduenture therein and assist the same either in their persons or otherwise to which we thinke the publication of this Booke may much conduce And we doe giue good approbation to his good indeauours and purpose So haue we thought fit earnestly to recommend him vnto your Lordships good fauours both for the distribution of his Books within the Prouinces of Canterbury and Yorke vnto the seuerall Parishes thereof and also for your Lordships helpe and furtherance that after his great trauels and charges wherein he hath spent much of his time and meanes hauing long time been a Merchant of good estate he may reape by your Lordships assistance some profit of his labours and towards the printing and distributing the said Bookes by such a voluntary contribution as shal be willingly giuen and collected for him within the seuerall Parish Churches of the said Prouinces which will be both a good incouragement vnto others in the like indeuours for the seruice of their Country and some reward to him for his great charge trauels and diuers losses at Sea which he hath receiued as we are credibly certified And so commending him earnestly to your good Lordships We bid your Lordships very heartily farewell From Whitehall the last day of Iune 1621. THe right Honorable Henry Lord Cary Viscount of Faulke-land Lord Deputy Generall of the Kingdome of Ireland hath vndertaken to plant a Colony of his Maiesties subiects in the New-found-land and his Lordship is well pleased to entertaine such as are willing to be Aduenturers with him therein vpon such Conditions as may appeare in the latter part of this Booke And in his Lordships absence he hath authorized his Agent Master Leonard Wellsted Gentleman by warrant vnder his hand and Seale to ratifie whatsoeuer shall be by him concluded therein The said Master Wellsteds Chamber is neere to one Master Garlands house at the lower end of Saint Martins lane in the field The Right Honourable Sir George Caluert Knight principall Secretarie vnto the Kings most excellent Maiesty hath also vndertaken to plant a large Circuit of that Country who hath already sent thither this yeare and the former yeare a great number of men and women with all necessarie prouisions fit for them where they liue pleasantly building of houses cleansing of land for Corne and meddowes Cabage Carrets Turneps and such like as also for Woad and Tobacco Likewise they are there preparing to make Salt for the preseruing of fish another yeare and for diuers other seruices And his Honour is likewise well pleased to entertaine such as will aduenture with him therein vpon very fit conditions The Worshipfull Iohn Slany of London Merchant who is one of the vndertakers of the New-found-land Plantation is Treasurer vnto the Patentees of that Society who haue maintained a Colony of his Maiesties subiects there aboue twelue yeares and they are willing to entertaine such as will further his Maiesties said Plantation vpon fit conditions Diuers Worshipfull Citizens of the City of Bristoll haue vndertaken to plant a large Circuit of that Countrey and they haue maintained a Colony of his Maiesties subiects there any time these fiue yeares who haue builded there faire houses and done many other good seruices who liue there very pleasantly and they are well pleased to entertaine vpon fit conditions such as wil be Aduenturers with them The Worshipfull William Vaughan of Tarracod in the County of Carmarthen Doctor of the Ciuill law hath also vndertaken to plant a Circuit in the New-found-land and hath in two seuerall yeares sent thither diuers men and women and he is willing to entertaine such as will be Aduenturers with with him vpon fit conditions And there are many other worthy persons Aduenturers in the said Plantation whose names are not herein mentioned And it is well hoped that diuers others wil also put their helping hand to aduance the same when they are giuen to vnderstand what honour and benefit may accrue thereby And if his Maiesties subiects of this Kingdome may be willing to set foorth from euery seuerall County but one good ship yearely thither with people and prouisions fit for them it will be then not onely a great honour and benefit vnto his Maiesty but also a great increase of shipping and Mariners and the imploying and inriching of many thousands of poore people which now liue chargeable to the Parishioners The which may be easily performed by the able subiects to set forth the charge at first and so euery Parish to receiue yearely their equall parts of the benefit which may accrue by the said stocke and thereby not onely disburden yearely themselues of some of those which lie chargeable vnto them within their seuerall Parishes but also yearely yeeld a great benefit to euery seuerall County though it lie something remote from the Sea-coast if they imploy a discreet honest man therein who may yearely be accomptable to euery Parish of the charge and likewise the benefit The which will not be any way burdensome or hurtfull vnto any as the following discourse which I haue written will plainly informe them From my Chamber at the signe of the gilded Cocke in Pater-noster-Row in London R.
