&_o primitive_a chur._n be_v either_o for_o supplication_n to_o turn_v away_o some_o present_a or_o imminent_a danger_n of_o war_n pestilence_n famine_n or_o any_o other_o great_a calamity_n or_o for_o suit_n to_o obtain_v some_o great_a &_o particular_a blessing_n as_o gracious_a direction_n in_o the_o call_n of_o such_o as_o shall_v serve_v the_o church_n &_o special_o in_o the_o ministry_n &_o preach_v of_o the_o word_n or_o any_o such_o weighty_a &_o extraordinary_a request_n great_o concern_v the_o good_a estate_n of_o the_o church_n which_o occasion_n to_o seek_v to_o god_n in_o this_o most_o humble_a &_o earnest_a manner_n we_o see_v by_o experience_n do_v remain_v still_o &_o shall_v continue_v to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n for_o both_o other_o great_a grace_n may_v upon_o sundry_a occasion_n fall_v out_o to_o be_v so_o necessary_a for_o the_o state_n of_o the_o church_n that_o this_o way_n be_v to_o be_v take_v to_o obtain_v they_o &_o oftentimes_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o ministry_n this_o will_v be_v requisite_a and_o for_o the_o other_o cause_n see_v we_o oftentimes_o so_o multiply_v our_o provocation_n against_o god_n that_o in_o justice_n he_o holy_a order_n restore_v to_o it_o again_o that_o hereby_o the_o hot_a wrath_n and_o high_a displeasure_n of_o god_n against_o we_o may_v be_v pacify_v wherefore_o it_o be_v to_o be_v wish_v by_o all_o good_a mean_n of_o all_o man_n to_o be_v seek_v for_o that_o by_o the_o authority_n of_o the_o magistrate_n and_o advise_v of_o the_o preacher_n of_o god_n word_n upon_o any_o such_o reason_n either_o general_o in_o the_o whole_a land_n if_o the_o cause_n be_v general_a or_o particular_o in_o the_o place_n where_o the_o occasion_n may_v be_v that_o the_o people_n be_v advise_v and_o command_v upon_o some_o day_n fit_n for_o the_o purpose_n to_o surcease_v their_o worldly_a affair_n as_o they_o do_v upon_o a_o sabbaoth_n or_o holy_a day_n to_o fast_o unto_o the_o evening_n to_o the_o end_n that_o they_o may_v assemble_v themselves_o at_o the_o hour_n accustom_v upon_o such_o day_n to_o the_o church_n to_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n fit_o for_o the_o time_n &_o zealous_o preach_v and_o also_o to_o make_v their_o earnest_a prayer_n to_o god_n for_o the_o favour_n they_o will_v obtain_v and_o their_o most_o humble_a supplication_n with_o rent_n and_o contrite_a heart_n in_o tear_n &_o strong_a cry_n in_o the_o spirit_n to_o turn_v away_o such_o his_o heavy_a indignation_n from_o we_o as_o we_o may_v lie_v under_o or_o fear_v to_o fall_v upon_o us._n to_o take_v one_o example_n of_o many_o in_o the_o scripture_n 2._o io._n 2._o we_o read_v in_o the_o prophecy_n of_o joel_n that_o the_o l._n threaten_v a_o famine_n exhort_v the_o people_n hereunto_o upon_o hope_n that_o if_o they_o seek_v he_o earnest_o they_o shall_v find_v he_o gracious_a and_o merciful_a long_o suffer_v and_o of_o great_a goodness_n in_o the_o same_o place_n declare_v that_o he_o &_o appoint_v such_o a_o day_n of_o fast_n wherein_z the_o people_n shall_v humble_v themselves_o in_o true_a repentance_n &_o seek_v with_o mighty_a prayer_n deliverance_n from_o the_o punishment_n threaten_v or_o lie_v upon_o they_o which_o be_v so_o much_o the_o more_o necessary_a at_o this_o time_n to_o be_v know_v for_o that_o we_o see_v that_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n have_v break_v out_o upon_o we_o of_o late_a as_o a_o flame_a fire_n in_o visit_v we_o with_o the_o grievous_a visitation_n of_o that_o pestilence_n both_o in_o this_o city_n of_o london_n and_o sundry_a other_o place_n of_o this_o land_n which_o visitation_n since_o the_o great_a plague_n have_v continue_v in_o this_o city_n waste_v the_o inhabitant_n as_o a_o small_a fire_n now_o the_o space_n of_o 15._o year_n continual_o and_o sometime_o rage_a more_o fierce_o as_o it_o do_v of_o late_a and_o sure_o there_o be_v many_o just_a cause_n to_o fear_v lest_o the_o l._n may_v command_v this_o furnace_n to_o be_v heat_v yet_o seven_o time_n more_o and_o that_o the_o angel_n of_o god_n which_o have_v stand_v over_o this_o city_n with_o his_o draw_v sword_n to_o strike_v it_o not_o only_o a_o few_o day_n as_o he_o do_v in_o the_o time_n of_o david_n over_o jerusalem_n but_o so_o many_o year_n may_v still_o pursue_v his_o execution_n if_o all_o holy_a and_o lawful_a mean_n be_v not_o use_v to_o mitigate_v the_o lord_n displeasure_n towards_o us._n wherefore_o most_o humble_o i_o beseech_v your_o honour_n as_o one_o who_o by_o your_o ll._n honourable_a favour_n have_v a_o part_n and_o lot_n in_o the_o be_v hope_v that_o such_o repentance_n &_o prayer_n may_v stand_v as_o aaron_z with_o his_o holy_a censor_n do_v in_o like_a case_n of_o plague_n in_o the_o gap_n and_o in_o the_o breach_n between_o the_o live_n and_o the_o dead_a that_o the_o angel_n of_o the_o lord_n strike_v no_o more_o of_o we_o down_o with_o this_o fearful_a hand_n and_o sword_n wherewith_o we_o have_v see_v already_o so_o many_o slay_v and_o fall_v down_o on_o every_o side_n round_o about_o us._n a_o wise_a k._n say_v our_o saviour_n in_o the_o gospel_n see_v a_o mighty_a king_n than_o himself_o come_v against_o he_o with_o so_o many_o thousand_o as_o he_o be_v not_o able_a in_o any_o sort_n to_o meet_v he_o in_o the_o field_n while_o he_o be_v yet_o a_o far_o off_o send_v a_o ambassage_n unto_o he_o for_o peace_n send_v out_o a_o ambassage_n of_o prayer_n of_o tear_n and_o of_o true_a repentance_n to_o make_v our_o peace_n and_o reconciliation_n with_o he_o &_o to_o restore_v we_o to_o his_o gracious_a and_o accustom_a favour_n again_o why_o shall_v we_o carry_v till_o the_o first_o beget_v in_o every_o house_n be_v slay_v as_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v in_o the_o day_n of_o the_o unrepentance_n of_o egypt_n or_o till_o the_o angel_n of_o zennacharib_n be_v send_v amongst_o we_o and_o that_o thousand_o fall_v down_o beside_o we_o at_o our_o right_a hand_n and_o at_o our_o left_a thus_o i_o be_o bold_a as_o in_o the_o duty_n of_o my_o call_n to_o god_n &_o to_o his_o church_n but_o yet_o with_o all_o humility_n a_o reverence_n as_o speak_v to_o they_o of_o who_o it_o be_v write_v you_o be_v god_n to_o stir_v up_o your_o godly_a wisdom_n to_o the_o remembrance_n of_o the_o duty_n which_o at_o this_o time_n the_o lord_n god_n require_v of_o us._n now_o i_o return_v to_o my_o answer_n again_o wherein_o i_o have_v already_o show_v the_o r._n fast_o not_o only_o to_o want_v commandment_n promise_n or_o example_n in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n to_o approve_v it_o but_o also_o to_o be_v full_a of_o damnable_a and_o pharysaicall_a hypocrisy_n and_o pride_n &_o further_o brief_o prove_v refer_v the_o good_a reader_n that_o be_v desirous_a to_o be_v more_o full_o instruct_v herein_o to_o a_o godly_a and_o learned_a treatise_n write_v express_o of_o this_o matter_n in_o our_o own_o language_n both_o commandment_n promise_n &_o example_n for_o the_o true_a and_o right_a order_n of_o fast_o whereby_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o the_o one_o provoke_v vengeance_n against_o a_o superstitious_a people_n and_o the_o other_o mercy_n &_o the_o blessing_n of_o god_n whereupon_o depend_v the_o good_a estate_n of_o every_o common_a wealth_n to_o those_o which_o be_v true_o humble_v therefore_o i_o will_v proceed_v now_o forward_o to_o the_o five_o article_n of_o his_o comparison_n life_n the_o five_o point_n of_o sole_a life_n the_o five_o be_v that_o their_o doctrine_n command_v sole_a life_n to_o all_o clergy_n man_n and_o religious_a people_n as_o he_o speak_v mean_v priest_n cloisterer_n &_o such_o of_o the_o laity_n as_o be_v officer_n among_o they_o whereof_o he_o note_v a_o double_a commodity_n but_o first_o for_o their_o doctrine_n i_o say_v it_o be_v express_o contrary_a to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n which_o do_v declare_v the_o gift_n of_o continency_n to_o be_v give_v but_o to_o a_o few_o &_o therefore_o not_o to_o so_o very_o great_a a_o number_n as_o he_o speak_v of_o &_o account_v of_o priest_n monk_n friar_n nun_n &_o other_o officer_n attendant_a upon_o they_o whereupon_o i_o conclude_v this_o doctrine_n to_o be_v flat_a contrary_n to_o the_o rule_n of_o the_o apostle_n who_o say_v for_o avoid_v of_o fornication_n let_v every_o man_n have_v his_o own_o wife_n and_o every_o woman_n her_o own_o husband_n and_o again_o if_o they_o do_v not_o contain_v let_v they_o marry_v now_o let_v he_o tell_v i_o what_o may_v come_v of_o disobey_v the_o commandment_n of_o god_n despise_v his_o holy_a ordnance_n gracious_o provide_v for_o remedy_n of_o incontinency_n sure_o even_o that_o which_o experience_n have_v declare_v with_o be_v such_o as_o it_o be_v marvel_v the_o l._n have_v not_o judge_v that_o filthy_a and_o whorish_a church_n with_o the_o judgement_n of_o a_o adultre_n many_o year_n ago_o but_o he_o suppose_v they_o all_o to_o have_v live_v chaste_a contrary_n to_o the_o doctrine_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n as_o have_v be_v daclare_v show_v a_o great_a commodity_n of_o it_o in_o that_o the_o multitude_n of_o the_o people_n by_o such_o mean_n be_v great_o diminish_v but_o sal._n commend_v by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n for_o a_o wise_a &_o politic_a prince_n say_v the_o honour_n of_o a_o king_n be_v in_o the_o multitude_n of_o his_o subject_n and_o common_a reason_n do_v sufficient_o teach_v it_o that_o the_o strength_n and_o power_n of_o a_o prince_n be_v in_o the_o great_a number_n of_o his_o people_n as_o the_o experience_n of_o all_o age_n and_o story_n of_o all_o time_n do_v plain_o testify_v therefore_o be_v so_o very_o great_a a_o number_n as_o he_o say_v and_o as_o they_o be_v in_o deed_n what_o high_a point_n of_o policy_n this_o may_v be_v i_o think_v few_o can_v understand_v now_o of_o the_o other_o part_n our_o doctrine_n be_v such_o as_o we_o leave_v it_o free_a to_o all_o man_n according_a as_o they_o shall_v find_v themselves_o to_o be_v call_v of_o god_n and_o best_a able_a to_o serve_v he_o and_o his_o people_n in_o that_o place_n they_o be_v appoint_v unto_o either_o to_o marry_v or_o to_o abstain_v if_o any_o man_n have_v that_o rare_a gift_n of_o continency_n while_o the_o lord_n continue_v that_o favour_n towards_o he_o he_o may_v use_v his_o blessing_n again_o they_o that_o find_v themselves_o to_o need_v the_o help_n of_o marryiage_n that_o they_o may_v live_v in_o holiness_n and_o in_o honour_n as_o the_o lord_n have_v command_v we_o teach_v according_a to_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o apostle_n that_o it_o be_v a_o divelishe_a doctrine_n to_o forbid_v they_o marriage_n and_o affirm_v it_o to_o be_v honourable_a among_o all_o man_n without_o any_o exception_n of_o degree_n or_o call_v and_o sure_o if_o this_o commandment_n thou_o shall_v not_o commit_v adultery_n be_v give_v unto_o all_o man_n if_o all_o be_v to_o possess_v by_o the_o commandment_n of_o god_n their_o vessel_n in_o honour_n than_o they_o which_o without_o marriage_n can_v live_v chaste_a and_o holy_a not_o only_o lawful_o may_v but_o of_o necessary_a duty_n ought_v to_o marry_v in_o which_o estate_n to_o fear_v the_o increase_n of_o the_o l._n people_n be_v to_o fear_v the_o blessing_n of_o the_o lord_n for_o as_o a_o blessing_n be_v it_o promise_v to_o abraham_n that_o his_o seed_n shall_v be_v as_o the_o sand_n of_o the_o sea_n in_o multitude_n and_o as_o the_o star_n of_o heaven_n which_o be_v oftentimes_o also_o note_v as_o a_o great_a favour_n bestow_v upon_o the_o people_n of_o israel_n both_o by_o moses_n and_o by_o the_o prophet_n which_o be_v as_o it_o be_v a_o blessing_n to_o the_o land_n in_o any_o of_o the_o people_n so_o be_v it_o especial_o to_o the_o minister_n of_o the_o word_n 3._o 1._o tim._n 3._o if_o according_a to_o their_o duty_n &_o the_o exhortation_n of_o the_o apostle_n they_o bring_v up_o their_o child_n in_o awe_n and_o fear_n of_o god_n free_a from_o any_o just_a charge_n of_o riot_n &_o intemperance_n with_o all_o grace_n comeliness_n and_o decent_a honesty_n who_o otherwise_o be_v unworthy_a to_o have_v charge_n of_o the_o church_n and_o house_n of_o god_n for_o then_o the_o common_a wealth_n shall_v be_v happy_a not_o only_o for_o that_o the_o people_n thereof_o be_v mnny_n but_o that_o they_o be_v both_o many_o and_o those_o both_o wise_a and_o godly_a and_o what_o both_o this_o increase_n of_o people_n now_o so_o many_o year_n against_o which_o he_o dispute_v and_o a_o great_a multitude_n of_o godly_a stranger_n that_o our_o neighbour_n also_o taste_v of_o the_o comfort_n of_o it_o whereas_o in_o the_o late_a time_n of_o their_o fast_n and_o sole_a life_n notwithstanding_o all_o their_o policy_n of_o save_v the_o provision_n by_o their_o day_n of_o abstinence_n and_o fast_v and_o forbid_v the_o marriage_n of_o so_o great_a a_o number_n of_o the_o people_n yet_o the_o land_n be_v sore_o visit_v with_o famine_n and_o this_o for_o answer_v to_o his_o first_o commodity_n the_o second_o commodity_n he_o presume_v to_o rise_v to_o the_o common_a wealth_n of_o the_o single_a life_n of_o their_o clergy_n be_v that_o they_o be_v able_a to_o keep_v hospitality_n to_o spare_v the_o offalle_v of_o their_o live_n as_o lease_n copy_n hold_v and_o such_o like_a and_o to_o build_v college_n church_n and_o other_o monument_n of_o piety_n the_o contrary_a inconvenience_n he_o say_v the_o marry_a life_n of_o our_o minister_n bring_v who_o
the_o great_a transgression_n of_o the_o one_o with_o the_o great_a breach_n of_o the_o other_o and_o so_o likewise_o in_o the_o rest_n keep_n a_o due_a rate_n and_o equality_n of_o sin_n that_o be_v match_v together_o therefore_o notwithstanding_o we_o esteem_v not_o sin_n light_n but_o all_o in_o their_o nature_n mortal_a and_o deadly_a yet_o we_o make_v a_o great_a difference_n of_o sin_n wherefore_o if_o they_o understand_v by_o this_o distinction_n no_o other_o matter_n but_o to_o make_v a_o difference_n that_o some_o shall_v be_v great_a than_o other_o they_o have_v no_o cause_n to_o strive_v with_o us._n and_o for_o this_o what_o commodity_n it_o may_v bring_v to_o a_o common_a weal_n we_o be_v in_o the_o blessing_n of_o god_n to_o look_v for_o it_o this_o be_v our_o their_o nature_n and_o in_o justice_n deserve_v everlasting_a death_n wherein_o we_o also_o agree_v but_o the_o point_n of_o variance_n be_v in_o this_o that_o they_o say_v all_o sin_n be_v not_o mortal_a but_o that_o there_o be_v sin_n which_o in_o justice_n be_v not_o to_o be_v punish_v with_o everlasting_a death_n which_o kind_n of_o sin_n they_o call_v venial_a not_o understand_v that_o god_n for_o christ_n sake_n do_v forgive_v it_o those_o which_o believe_v for_o so_o we_o grant_v that_o all_o be_v venial_a for_o to_o the_o believer_n all_o shall_v be_v forgive_v and_o there_o shall_v be_v no_o imputation_n of_o any_o sin_n but_o take_v it_o in_o this_o sense_n which_o i_o have_v declare_v in_o which_o i_o deny_v any_o sin_n to_o be_v venial_a &_o affirm_v all_o to_o be_v mortal_a which_o our_o doctrine_n be_v ground_v upon_o the_o word_n of_o god_n for_o this_o be_v general_a of_o all_o sin_n which_o the_o apostle_n without_o exception_n of_o any_o say_v that_o the_o pain_n of_o sin_n be_v death_n meaning_n everlasting_a as_o it_o appear_v there_o by_o the_o mention_n of_o life_n everlasting_a life_n in_o the_o same_o place_n and_o thus_o the_o apostle_n teach_v according_a to_o the_o law_n wherein_o it_o be_v say_v express_o curse_a be_v he_o that_o abide_v not_o in_o all_o that_o be_v command_v in_o this_o law_n but_o say_v he_o though_o your_o doctrine_n be_v true_a yet_o do_v it_o not_o stand_v with_o good_a pollcie_n which_o be_v to_o keep_v man_n in_o virtue_n and_o honesty_n as_o we_o do_v because_o if_o all_o be_v mortal_a who_o will_v strive_v against_o sin_n whereas_o admit_v all_o not_o to_o be_v mortal_a though_o a_o man_n be_v carry_v into_o a_o venial_a sin_n yet_o will_v he_o strive_v to_o refrain_v from_o mortal_a consider_v it_o bring_v damnation_n and_o though_o this_o roman_a doctrine_n be_v false_a yet_o do_v it_o more_o encourage_v man_n to_o strive_v against_o sin_n but_o i_o say_v this_o be_v to_o reason_n like_o a_o atheiste_n for_o as_o i_o have_v often_o say_v before_o there_o can_v be_v no_o doctrine_n fit_a to_o procure_v the_o blessing_n of_o god_n to_o any_o state_n whereupon_o depend_v the_o wealth_n peace_n and_o honour_n of_o every_o people_n and_o common_a wealth_n but_o only_o that_o which_o be_v of_o god_n and_o therefore_o whatsoever_o he_o may_v suppose_v in_o our_o or_o their_o doctrine_n to_o be_v for_o or_o against_o a_o state_n the_o truth_n must_v needs_o be_v that_o all_o thing_n reckon_v and_o in_o the_o end_n it_o can_v never_o prove_v a_o good_a doctrine_n for_o any_o state_n the_o uttermoste_a of_o the_o grace_n they_o have_v receive_v all_o manner_n of_o sin_n and_o if_o the_o less_o much_o more_o the_o great_a which_o have_v more_o grievous_a condemnation_n but_o he_o and_o the_o rest_n of_o these_o romanist_n in_o faith_n &_o in_o allegiaunce_n suppose_v by_o make_v all_o sin_n to_o be_v punish_v with_o death_n that_o all_o be_v teach_v to_o be_v equal_a which_o be_v nothing_o so_o for_o that_o death_n be_v not_o like_a unto_o this_o which_o be_v of_o the_o natural_a soul_n and_o body_n and_o of_o the_o life_n of_o the_o natural_a man_n but_o it_o be_v a_o deadly_a cast_v out_o of_o the_o presence_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n with_o who_o only_o be_v life_n that_o which_o in_o deed_n and_o truth_n may_v be_v so_o call_v for_o the_o comfort_n that_o be_v in_o it_o whereas_o the_o other_o be_v such_o a_o life_n as_o some_o which_o live_v in_o it_o wish_v rather_o for_o death_n and_o will_v dig_v for_o it_o as_o job_n speak_v if_o they_o may_v find_v it_o and_o desire_v that_o the_o mountain_n may_v cover_v they_o and_o the_o hill_n hide_v they_o from_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n li_v upon_o they_o therefore_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o man_n in_o the_o natural_a death_n of_o the_o body_n to_o devise_v great_a difference_n of_o torment_n so_o as_o notwithstanding_o all_o suffer_v death_n yet_o one_o may_v endure_v without_o comparison_n
