in_o force_n all_o man_n by_o nature_n be_v under_o it_o for_o it_o be_v nothing_o but_o the_o natural_a law_n of_o our_o creation_n work_n all_o man_n be_v natural_o under_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n there_o be_v indeed_o a_o positive_a law_n beside_o give_v to_o adam_n but_o the_o observe_n of_o it_o need_v not_o have_v create_v any_o trouble_n to_o innocent_a man_n all_o man_n be_v natural_o under_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n for_o they_o be_v natural_o under_o the_o law_n of_o their_o creation_n which_o be_v the_o covenant_n of_o work_n yea_o the_o saint_n themselves_o be_v not_o free_v from_o it_o any_o further_a than_o from_o the_o condemn_a power_n of_o it_o by_o christ_n have_v suffer_v the_o penalty_n for_o they_o that_o all_o man_n be_v natural_o under_o the_o law_n or_o under_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n which_o be_v all_o one_o appear_v for_o that_o all_o those_o who_o christ_n come_v to_o redeem_v be_v under_o the_o law_n gal._n 4.5_o which_o must_v be_v mean_v of_o the_o law_n strict_o take_v for_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n for_o else_o none_o but_o the_o jew_n and_o proselyted_a gentile_n be_v under_o the_o law_n as_o deliver_v by_o moses_n whereas_o in_o that_o scripture_n it_o be_v plain_a that_o all_o those_o who_o christ_n come_v to_o redeem_v be_v under_o the_o law_n therefore_o it_o be_v mean_v under_o the_o law_n as_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n beside_o the_o apostle_n in_o rom._n 7._o the_o first_o six_o verse_n argue_v thus_o that_o the_o conscience_n or_o soul_n of_o a_o man_n must_v either_o be_v marry_v to_o the_o law_n as_o its_o husband_n or_o to_o christ_n as_o its_o husband_n and_o till_o it_o be_v marry_v to_o christ_n the_o law_n be_v its_o natural_a husband_n but_o when_o it_o be_v marry_v to_o christ_n the_o law_n be_v its_o husband_n no_o long_o therefore_o till_o a_o man_n come_v to_o christ_n he_o be_v under_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n therefore_o all_o man_n natural_o be_v under_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n for_o no_o man_n be_v in_o christ_n by_o nature_n i_o answer_v in_o the_o three_o place_n that_o it_o be_v true_a moses_n and_o our_o saviour_n both_o preach_v a_o covenant_n of_o work_n as_o well_o as_o a_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o well_o may_v because_o all_o man_n be_v natural_o under_o it_o yet_o neither_o our_o saviour_n nor_o moses_n do_v it_o with_o design_n to_o make_v man_n seek_v justification_n by_o work_n but_o only_o to_o burden_n man_n conscience_n with_o insupportable_a load_n of_o guilt_n that_o so_o they_o may_v ready_o flee_v to_o the_o hope_n that_o be_v set_v before_o they_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n which_o they_o have_v together_o with_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n in_o the_o same_o dispensation_n that_o moses_n do_v it_o with_o this_o design_n st._n paul_n assert_n as_o i_o have_v show_v in_o several_a place_n the_o law_n enter_v that_o the_o offence_n may_v abound_v and_o so_o be_v a_o schoolmaster_n unto_o christ_n and_o that_o our_o saviour_n do_v it_o with_o this_o design_n the_o place_n quote_v in_o the_o objection_n will_v sufficient_o evidence_n luke_n 10.25_o to_o the_o 28.25_o v._o behold_v a_o certain_a lawyer_n stand_v up_o and_o tempt_v he_o say_v master_n what_o shall_v i_o do_v to_o inherit_v eternal_a life_n here_o this_o lawyer_n come_v not_o with_o a_o good_a intention_n for_o it_o be_v say_v he_o stand_v up_o and_o tempt_v our_o saviour_n make_v the_o question_n rather_o to_o see_v what_o our_o saviour_n will_v say_v then_o to_o get_v any_o satisfaction_n to_o himself_o and_o in_o the_o 29._o ver_fw-la it_o be_v say_v this_o lawyer_n be_v willing_a to_o justify_v himself_o now_o how_o can_v the_o pride_n of_o this_o tempt_a lawyer_n be_v better_a repress_v then_o by_o send_v he_o to_o the_o law_n to_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n which_o if_o he_o will_v but_o set_v himself_o in_o earnest_a to_o keep_v will_v quick_o prick_v the_o bladder_n of_o his_o pride_n and_o let_v out_o that_o wind_n with_o which_o he_o be_v so_o swell_v as_o to_o dare_v come_v and_o tempt_v christ_n and_o justify_v himself_o but_o now_o our_o saviour_n take_v another_o course_n with_o the_o woman_n of_o canaan_n who_o after_o she_o be_v try_v with_o a_o knock_n or_o two_o with_o some_o harsh_a word_n so_o as_o to_o be_v call_v dog_n yet_o continue_v humble_a and_o submissive_a have_v her_o faith_n extol_v by_o our_o saviour_n and_o be_v strengthen_v with_o the_o high_a consolation_n as_o we_o have_v the_o story_n matt._n 15._o from_o ver_fw-la 22._o to_o ver_fw-la 29._o thus_o god_n resist_v the_o proud_a he_o have_v a_o covenant_n of_o work_n to_o oppose_v they_o withal_o but_o he_o give_v grace_n and_o show_v mercy_n to_o the_o humble_a he_o have_v a_o covenant_n of_o grace_n to_o comfort_v they_o with_o obj._n 5_o there_o be_v one_o objection_n yet_o more_o concern_v the_o ceremonial_a law_n which_o i_o do_v not_o mention_v at_o the_o first_o and_o it_o be_v this_o certain_o it_o appear_v from_o the_o ceremonial_a law_n that_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n be_v give_v to_o they_o for_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n else_o why_o have_v they_o such_o multitude_n of_o ceremony_n impose_v upon_o they_o if_o they_o be_v not_o to_o have_v life_n for_o the_o observation_n and_o do_v of_o they_o together_o with_o the_o duty_n of_o the_o moral_a law_n and_o it_o be_v very_o observable_a that_o in_o that_o place_n of_o leviticus_n which_o the_o apostle_n quote_v as_o contain_v the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n the_o ceremony_n be_v as_o strict_o enjoin_v as_o the_o moral_a duty_n of_o the_o law_n be_v with_o this_o badge_n of_o the_o law_n of_o work_n upon_o they_o the_o man_n that_o do_v they_o shall_v live_v in_o they_o leu._n 18.4_o 5._o you_o shall_v do_v my_o judgement_n that_o be_v say_v commentor_n my_o judicial_a law_n and_o keep_v my_o ordinance_n that_o be_v say_v they_o either_o moral_a or_o ceremonial_a so_o in_o ver_fw-la 5._o you_o covenant_n of_o work_n as_o it_o seem_v to_o have_v be_v to_o adam_n who_o have_v but_o a_o few_o other_o command_v beside_o viz._n such_o as_o we_o call_v positive_a and_o
if_o every_o man_n by_o nature_n be_v under_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n though_o a_o stranger_n to_o the_o old-testament_n or_o new_a as_o have_v never_o hear_v of_o either_o be_v under_o the_o law_n of_o his_o creation_n how_o much_o more_o be_v the_o israelite_n under_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n who_o beside_o the_o moral_a law_n have_v the_o judicial_a and_o ceremonial_a add_v for_o they_o to_o observe_v and_o altogether_o give_v they_o with_o this_o language_n of_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n these_o you_o shall_v observe_v which_o if_o a_o man_n do_v he_o shall_v live_v in_o they_o i_o be_o the_o lord_n i_o shall_v add_v only_o one_o observation_n more_o to_o strengthen_v the_o objection_n and_o it_o be_v this_o that_o when_o st._n paul_n dispute_v against_o the_o galatian_n for_o embrace_v a_o covenant_n of_o work_n most_o of_o his_o work_n lie_v in_o beat_v they_o off_o from_o the_o ceremonial_a law_n which_o they_o be_v exceed_o addict_v to_o as_o look_v upon_o the_o la_o of_o moses_n to_o be_v very_o much_o of_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n and_o the_o ceremonial_a law_n as_o a_o great_a sign_n of_o it_o there_o be_v so_o much_o work_n cut_v out_o for_o they_o in_o it_o and_o very_o believe_v that_o if_o they_o be_v pretty_a strict_a in_o keep_v the_o ceremonial_a law_n god_n will_v justify_v and_o save_v they_o therefore_o it_o be_v very_o probable_a that_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n be_v give_v to_o they_o as_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n for_o this_o reason_n as_o well_o as_o other_o that_o there_o be_v so_o many_o ceremony_n appoint_v for_o they_o to_o observe_v most_o of_o which_o it_o be_v more_o than_o probable_a the_o great_a number_n do_v not_o understand_v and_o so_o must_v take_v up_o und_fw-ge satisfy_v themselves_o with_o the_o work_n do_v than_o which_o what_o can_v look_v more_o like_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n for_o man_n to_o do_v a_o great_a many_o thing_n which_o they_o do_v not_o understand_v mere_o because_o god_n have_v command_v they_o now_o for_o answer_v to_o this_o objection_n and_o i_o shall_v give_v it_o in_o several_a particular_n a._n 1_o i_o confess_v that_o the_o ceremonial_a law_n prove_v a_o great_a snare_n and_o a_o stumbling-block_n unto_o the_o careless_a jew_n and_o so_o to_o the_o galatian_n for_o when_o they_o find_v such_o a_o great_a task_n of_o ceremony_n set_v they_o they_o care_v not_o much_o to_o study_v the_o meaning_n of_o they_o but_o take_v up_o with_o the_o do_v of_o they_o which_o to_o do_v do_v not_o much_o trouble_v their_o heart_n or_o conscience_n and_o so_o place_v themselves_o by_o it_o under_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n in_o their_o treat_v with_o god_n for_o justification_n two_o i_o grant_v that_o the_o ceremonial_a law_n be_v a_o great_a burden_n and_o a_o unsupportable_a yoke_n even_o to_o those_o that_o be_v good_a among_o the_o jew_n act_n 15.10_o and_o it_o be_v a_o great_a piece_n of_o the_o liberty_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o be_v free_v from_o it_o three_o i_o grant_v that_o the_o law_n moral_a judicial_a and_o ceremonial_a be_v give_v altogether_o and_o be_v include_v in_o that_o place_n where_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n or_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n be_v say_v to_o be_v describe_v by_o the_o apostle_n and_o i_o grant_v in_o this_o particular_a that_o though_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n alone_o be_v a_o covenant_n of_o work_n to_o those_o that_o be_v in_o a_o state_n of_o nature_n though_o they_o never_o receive_v any_o positive_a law_n from_o god_n yet_o that_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o a_o ceremonial_a la_o or_o a_o law_n consist_v of_o many_o ceremony_n or_o positive_a law_n to_o be_v a_o part_n of_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n as_o we_o find_v in_o adam_n covenant_n of_o work_n there_o be_v a_o sacrament_n as_o some_o reckon_v it_o of_o the_o tree_n of_o life_n and_o there_o be_v a_o positive_a law_n concern_v the_o forbid_a fruit_n which_o be_v neither_o of_o they_o branch_n of_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n and_o he_o may_v have_v be_v as_o well_o forbid_v as_o allow_v all_o the_o tree_n save_v one_o if_o the_o lord_n have_v please_v he_o may_v have_v have_v a_o system_a of_o positive_a and_o ceremonial_a law_n insert_v in_o his_o covenant_n of_o work_n if_o the_o lord_n have_v think_v good_a and_o no_o wrong_n have_v be_v do_v he_o for_o he_o be_v able_a to_o have_v keep_v they_o four_o yet_o here_o i_o deny_v that_o the_o ceremonial_a law_n be_v any_o part_n of_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n though_o bring_v in_o near_o that_o place_n where_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n be_v say_v by_o the_o apostle_n to_o be_v describe_v and_o that_o for_o this_o reason_n which_o full_o answer_v the_o objection_n that_o the_o ceremonial_a law_n do_v contain_v gospel_n in_o it_o which_o can_v be_v say_v of_o any_o branch_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n i_o allow_v indeed_o above_o that_o the_o law_n take_v strict_o for_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n do_v preach_v the_o gospel_n virtual_o or_o by_o consequence_n as_o it_o burden_a the_o sinner_n conscience_n and_o so_o make_v he_o seek_v further_o for_o a_o righteousness_n but_o i_o say_v then_o it_o be_v the_o law_n take_v in_o a_o large_a sense_n only_o as_o it_o contain_v the_o whole_a old-testament_n or_o at_o least_o a_o considerable_a part_n of_o it_o that_o teach_v christ_n and_o the_o gospel_n formal_o and_o express_o why_o now_o the_o ceremonial_a law_n teach_v christ_n in_o many_o perhaps_o in_o all_o the_o part_n of_o it_o if_o well_o understand_v what_o can_v the_o shed_n of_o so_o much_o blood_n for_o remission_n of_o sin_n signify_v but_o the_o shed_n of_o christ_n blood_n for_o they_o and_o we_o all_o which_o be_v the_o great_a mystery_n of_o the_o gospel_n now_o if_o any_o say_v they_o understand_v it_o not_o and_o yet_o must_v do_v it_o and_o so_o it_o be_v all_o one_o to_o they_o as_o if_o it_o have_v not_o singnify_v any_o thing_n at_o all_o and_o therefore_o must_v still_o pass_v with_o they_o as_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n i_o answer_v 1_o in_o the_o word_n of_o the_o apostle_n rom._n 3_o 3._o what_o though_o some_o do_v not_o believe_v do_v not_o understand_v must_v their_o unbelief_n and_o ignorance_n make_v the_o faith_n of_o god_n that_o doctrine_n of_o faith_n which_o the_o ceremonial_a law_n preach_v of_o none_o effect_n or_o signification_n but_o you_o will_v say_v they_o can_v not_o see_v the_o blood_n of_o christ_n in_o the_o blood_n of_o a_o sacrifice_n have_v no_o clear_a discovery_n than_o they_o have_v of_o christ_n i_o ans_fw-fr i_o confess_v i_o can_v say_v they_o can_v see_v so_o much_o though_o still_o so_o much_o be_v contain_v in_o it_o as_o now_o we_o well_o understand_v but_o yet_o if_o they_o can_v not_o see_v so_o much_o yet_o somewhat_o they_o may_v have_v learn_v for_o certain_o god_n appoint_v no_o idle_a useless_a insignificant_a ceremony_n in_o his_o worship_n therefore_o i_o suppose_v they_o may_v have_v learn_v thus_o much_o by_o their_o ceremony_n and_o particular_o by_o their_o sacrifice_n which_o i_o suppose_v be_v know_v even_o among_o heathen_n in_o their_o sacrifice_n that_o when_o they_o kill_v a_o beast_n for_o atone_v the_o anger_n of_o god_n here_o life_n go_v for_o life_n and_o god_n may_v as_o well_o have_v take_v their_o life_n from_o they_o as_o accept_v the_o life_n of_o that_o beast_n and_o so_o by_o this_o they_o may_v see_v that_o their_o life_n and_o salvation_n do_v depend_v pure_o upon_o the_o mercy_n and_o grace_n of_o god_n now_o this_o sufficient_o wean_v they_o from_o the_o law_n or_o covenant_n of_o work_n which_o have_v no_o grace_n or_o pardon_n in_o it_o it_o be_v therefore_o the_o gross_a mistake_n of_o all_o to_o understand_v the_o ceremonial_a law_n for_o a_o part_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n when_o it_o be_v great_o intend_v to_o be_v a_o gospel_n to_o they_o 5th_o and_o last_o if_o yet_o it_o be_v dark_a and_o do_v confound_v they_o with_o the_o multitude_n of_o duty_n which_o it_o impose_v why_o may_v it_o not_o herein_o do_v the_o good_a turn_n that_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n do_v for_o they_o which_o be_v to_o make_v they_o study_v and_o search_v and_o long_o for_o the_o pure_a and_o clear_a discovery_n of_o that_o rich_a grace_n which_o we_o now_o see_v in_o the_o day_n of_o the_o gospel_n i_o have_v now_o do_v with_o this_o objection_n also_o which_o i_o of_o purpose_n keep_v out_o from_o the_o rest_n in_o which_o i_o only_o consider_v the_o moral_a law_n as_o a_o

to_o be_v under_o the_o law_n do_v you_o not_o hear_v the_o law_n for_o it_o be_v write_v that_o abraham_n have_v two_o son_n etc._n etc._n where_o the_o whole_a book_n of_o genesis_n be_v make_v a_o part_n of_o the_o law_n again_o in_o rom._n 3._o the_o apostle_n make_v the_o psalm_n a_o part_n of_o the_o law_n where_o have_v quote_v a_o great_a part_n of_o the_o 14._o psalm_n in_o the_o 19_o ver_fw-la say_v he_o now_o we_o know_v that_o whatsoever_o thing_n the_o law_n say_v etc._n etc._n and_o so_o in_o other_o scripture_n now_o to_o apply_v the_o distinction_n in_o answer_n to_o the_o last_o query_n the_o law_n strict_o take_v for_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n do_v only_o teach_v christ_n virtual_o and_o by_o consequence_n as_o it_o teach_v they_o that_o they_o can_v not_o be_v justify_v by_o its_o righteousness_n and_o thus_o for_o aught_o i_o know_v the_o law_n in_o its_o accusation_n teach_v christ_n to_o the_o gentile_n as_o it_o convince_v they_o of_o the_o insufficiency_n of_o their_o own_o righteousness_n but_o now_o the_o law_n in_o the_o second_o sense_n as_o take_v for_o the_o scripture_n of_o the_o old_a testament_n teach_v christ_n formal_o and_o direct_o though_o more_o obscure_o than_o the_o gospel_n teach_v he_o viz._n in_o type_n and_o prophecy_n it_o be_v endless_a to_o reckon_v up_o all_o the_o type_n promise_n and_o prophecy_n of_o christ_n that_o be_v in_o the_o old-testament_n this_o way_n indeed_o the_o law_n can_v not_o teach_v christ_n unto_o the_o gentile_n who_o have_v not_o the_o scripture_n of_o the_o old-testament_n it_o be_v now_o high_a time_n and_o yet_o in_o this_o place_n seasonable_a enough_o to_o answer_v some_o other_o part_n of_o the_o objection_n which_o i_o propose_v at_o large_a some_o page_n since_o which_o plead_v for_o the_o law_n its_o be_v a_o way_n of_o justification_n unto_o the_o jew_n at_o least_o before_o the_o come_n of_o christ_n if_o not_o to_o we_o now_o and_o something_o of_o that_o which_o remain_v yet_o unanswered_a counant_n obj._n 2._o the_o law_n be_v give_v to_o the_o jew_n as_o their_o counant_n be_v this_o if_o the_o law_n be_v not_o give_v to_o be_v a_o way_n of_o justification_n why_o be_v it_o call_v a_o covenant_n the_o old-testament_n or_o covenant_n 2_o cor._n 3.14_o and_o the_o first_o covenant_n heb._n 7.8_o express_o say_v to_o be_v make_v with_o the_o child_n of_o israel_n when_o the_o lord_n take_v they_o by_o the_o hand_n to_o lead_v they_o out_o of_o the_o land_n of_o egypt_n for_o whatever_o you_o have_v argue_v about_o adam_n estate_n of_o innocency_n that_o god_n make_v a_o covenant_n of_o work_n with_o he_o and_o that_o if_o he_o will_v he_o may_v have_v be_v justify_v by_o work_n by_o the_o law_n that_o since_o he_o all_o man_n have_v sin_v and_o the_o law_n be_v no_o way_n of_o justification_n to_o they_o whatever_o you_o have_v argue_v to_o this_o purpose_n say_v the_o objector_n yet_o we_o find_v not_o that_o the_o law_n the_o gospel_n from_o he_o they_o receive_v the_o spirit_n by_o it_o etc._n etc._n now_o notwithstanding_o all_o this_o no_o soon_o do_v a_o company_n of_o law-preacher_n come_v that_o can_v do_v no_o miracle_n at_o all_o can_v not_o convey_v the_o spirit_n in_o their_o ministry_n and_o yet_o the_o galatian_n be_v so_o bewitch_v and_o besot_v with_o they_o through_o their_o own_o natural_a inclination_n to_o a_o legal_a righteousness_n that_o they_o fall_v off_o to_o the_o law_n in_o the_o sight_n and_o view_v of_o all_o those_o demonstration_n and_o conviction_n to_o the_o contrary_a and_o swallow_v down_o four_o several_a contradiction_n to_o boot_v ergo_fw-la hence_o it_o evident_o appear_v that_o man_n be_v exceed_o apt_a to_o run_v into_o this_o way_n of_o justification_n by_o work_n unless_o we_o shall_v imagine_v that_o this_o inclination_n in_o whole_a church_n of_o galatia_n be_v some_o strange_a kind_n of_o special_a distemper_n arise_v from_o the_o soil_n or_o some_o such_o trifle_a cause_n that_o hinder_v it_o from_o be_v common_a to_o we_o with_o they_o i_o say_v i_o take_v it_o for_o prove_a and_o grant_v from_o this_o example_n which_o be_v to_o i_o much_o like_o a_o induction_n the_o whole_a nation_n of_o the_o jew_n the_o church_n of_o galatia_n that_o be_v gentile_n be_v whole_o give_v to_o this_o way_n therefore_o this_o way_n be_v mighty_a natural_a to_o mankind_n and_o we_o have_v all_o a_o strong_a propension_n and_o inclination_n to_o it_o but_o here_o come_v in_o one_o considerable_a objection_n upon_o the_o answer_n of_o which_o the_o truth_n of_o this_o last_o assertion_n will_v be_v much_o clear_a and_o that_o be_v this_o you_o say_v object_n object_n that_o because_o the_o nation_n of_o the_o jew_n and_o the_o gentile_a galatian_n be_v so_o much_o addict_v to_o the_o way_n of_o justification_n of_o work_n therefore_o it_o be_v a_o argument_n that_o all_o mankind_n be_v addict_v to_o this_o way_n and_o that_o we_o be_v in_o danger_n of_o run_v into_o this_o way_n but_o you_o do_v not_o seem_v to_o observe_v the_o great_a snare_n and_o stumbling-block_n that_o lie_v in_o their_o way_n to_o put_v they_o upon_o it_o and_o that_o be_v the_o ceremonial_a law_n which_o they_o do_v not_o understand_v as_o typical_a of_o christ_n and_o gospel-mystery_n but_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o a_o task_n of_o duty_n which_o if_o they_o do_v go_v through_o and_o do_v their_o best_a to_o keep_v they_o shall_v undoubted_o please_v god_n and_o be_v save_v now_o this_o ceremonial_a law_n be_v give_v to_o the_o jew_n and_o not_o perfect_o out_o of_o use_v when_o the_o galatian_n be_v thus_o lead_v aside_o by_o it_o but_o be_v preach_v up_o by_o the_o devout_a jew_n that_o be_v turn_v to_o christianity_n that_o if_o they_o be_v not_o circumcise_v and_o keep_v not_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n they_o can_v not_o be_v save_v act._n 15.1_o now_o this_o the_o galatian_n receive_v as_o true_a and_o hold_v the_o gospel_n endeavour_v a_o answer_n and_o first_o of_o all_o i_o answer_v by_o way_n of_o concession_n in_o three_o particular_n ans_fw-fr ans_fw-fr 1._o it_o be_v true_a the_o jew_n have_v the_o ceremonial_a law_n impose_v upon_o they_o by_o god_n and_o the_o galatian_n by_o the_o seduction_n of_o false_a teacher_n receive_v it_o likewise_o as_o their_o duty_n 2._o the_o ceremonial_a law_n be_v apt_a to_o prove_v a_o snare_n to_o all_o that_o be_v under_o it_o in_o lead_v they_o into_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n for_o to_o be_v set_v to_o do_v a_o great_a many_o thing_n which_o we_o understand_v no_o meaning_n almost_o in_o how_o natural_o will_v it_o teach_v we_o to_o take_v up_o with_o the_o opus_fw-la operatum_fw-la the_o work_n do_v &_o to_o look_v no_o further_o which_o easy_o mis-leads_a it_o be_v grant_v that_o this_o do_v actual_o prove_v a_o great_a snare_n both_o to_o the_o jew_n and_o galatian_n which_o appear_v from_o this_o that_o the_o apostle_n when_o he_o be_v rebuke_v the_o galatian_n for_o their_o legality_n he_o instance_v for_o proof_n often_o in_o their_o observe_v the_o ceremonial_a law_n gal._n 4.8_o 9_o i_o window_n say_v he_o that_o after_o you_o be_v set_v free_a from_o bondage_n to_o idol_n by_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n you_o shall_v desire_v again_o to_o enter_v into_o bondage_n to_o ceremony_n which_o there_o he_o call_v beggarly_a rudiment_n and_o in_o ver_fw-la 10_o 11._o say_v he_o you_o observe_v day_n and_o month_n and_o time_n and_o year_n i_o be_o afraid_a of_o you_o lest_o i_o have_v bestow_v upon_o you_o labour_n in_o vain_a nay_o abuse_v after_o their_o performance_n by_o a_o spiritual_a pride_n adhere_v to_o they_o nay_o though_o they_o may_v perhaps_o be_v spoil_v sometime_o by_o a_o opinion_n of_o merit_n yet_o because_o i_o can_v think_v it_o possible_a for_o a_o man_n that_o do_v exercise_v himself_o to_o serve_v god_n with_o a_o perfect_a heart_n to_o turn_v all_o his_o really-good_a work_n into_o legal-works_a by_o a_o opinion_n of_o merit_n i_o shall_v except_v this_o from_o be_v a_o three_o way_n in_o which_o legality_n predominant_a may_v exert_v and_o show_v itself_o but_o for_o the_o other_o two_o way_n of_o invent_a ceremony_n or_o superstitiuâ—s_a observance_n and_o a_o external_a obedience_n to_o the_o duty_n of_o the_o moral_a law_n i_o think_v the_o nature_n of_o man_n be_v so_o addict_v scripture_n and_o since_o and_o
covenant_n of_o work_n for_o these_o two_o reason_n 1._o for_o that_o the_o ceremonial_a law_n neither_o be_v nor_o can_v be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n which_o the_o moral_a law_n both_o be_v and_o be_v to_o all_o that_o be_v under_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n two_o and_o consequent_o i_o therefore_o keep_v off_o from_o any_o consideration_n of_o the_o ceremonial_a law_n in_o my_o discourse_n about_o the_o law_n its_o be_v give_v by_o moses_n that_o so_o i_o may_v have_v my_o discourse_n run_v clear_a in_o the_o business_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n and_o draw_v a_o line_n in_o it_o from_o adam_n estate_n in_o innocency_n to_o the_o very_a day_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o with_o any_o mixture_n of_o discourse_n about_o the_o ceremonial_a law_n will_v have_v be_v shall_v accept_v it_o for_o such_o unto_o justification_n which_o appear_v from_o this_o double_a demonstration_n as_o i_o may_v call_v it_o a_o priori_fw-la &_o a_o posteriori_fw-la a_o priori_fw-la which_o be_v by_o faith_n that_o so_o we_o may_v find_v both_o that_o it_o be_v so_o and_o what_o this_o righteousness_n of_o faith_n be_v the_o place_n be_v deut._n 30.11_o to_o 15._o quote_v and_o paraphrase_a by_o the_o apostle_n rom._n 10.6_o 7_o 8_o 9_o 12_o a_o inquiry_n into_o the_o sense_n of_o deut_n 30_o 11_o 12_o in_o rom._n 10.6_o but_o the_o righteousness_n which_o be_v of_o faith_n gospel_n be_v this_o that_o all_o the_o comfort_n of_o this_o gospel_n by_o moses_n lie_v in_o do_v this_o commandment_n say_v he_o be_v not_o far_o off_o but_o in_o thy_o heart_n and_o in_o thy_o they_o do_v the_o command_n and_o curse_v if_o they_o do_v not_o this_o to_o some_o may_v not_o look_v like_o gospel_n but_o yet_o here_o be_v the_o gospel_n and_o therefore_o wherein_o do_v it_o lie_v deut._n wherein_o be_v the_o gospel_n express_v in_o this_o place_n of_o deut._n or_o how_o will_v it_o appear_v i_o have_v show_v wherein_o it_o can_v lie_v or_o do_v not_o seem_v to_o lie_v i_o will_v show_v yet_o wherein_o it_o must_v be_v express_v and_o wherein_o it_o be_v visible_o express_v and_o that_o be_v in_o that_o easiness_n which_o moses_n do_v so_o much_o insist_v upon_o in_o this_o scripture_n of_o do_v the_o commandment_n the_o commandment_n for_o the_o matter_n of_o it_o be_v perhaps_o the_o same_o with_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n and_o do_v partly_o at_o make_v a_o resurrection_n as_o be_v justify_v by_o the_o law_n this_o therefore_o can_v be_v the_o language_n of_o the_o law_n but_o now_o take_v the_o keep_v the_o law_n in_o a_o gospel-sence_n as_o perhaps_o that_o rom._n 8.4_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v where_o the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o law_n be_v say_v to_o be_v fulfil_v in_o we_o that_o walk_v not_o after_o the_o flesh_n but_o after_o word_n of_o the_o moral_a law_n take_v in_o its_o utmost_a exactness_n to_o be_v fulfil_v to_o a_o tittle_n this_o be_v not_o nigh_o thou_o it_o be_v as_o far_o as_o heaven_n further_a then_o either_o they_o can_v bear_v out_o any_o rough_a argument_n from_o gall_v or_o pinch_v through_o it_o law_n external_n conformity_n to_o the_o duty_n of_o the_o moral_a law_n what_o defence_n be_v it_o for_o use_v sway_v language_n more_o than_o the_o etymology_n of_o word_n i_o here_o understand_v the_o word_n moral_a pure_o in_o opposition_n to_o ceremonial_a or_o superstitious_a so_o as_o it_o ceremonious_a legallist_n now_o i_o shall_v likewise_o enter_v a_o caution_n concern_v the_o papist_n in_o who_o i_o have_v instance_a often_o in_o the_o matter_n of_o ceremony_n and_o superstition_n complaint_n of_o desertion_n and_o run_v into_o a_o maze_n and_o a_o labyrinth_n of_o doubt_n and_o trouble_n of_o mind_n which_o perhaps_o they_o get_v not_o out_o of_o for_o some_o year_n together_o of_o the_o moral_a law_n these_o not_o be_v spot_n of_o god_n child_n there_o be_v other_o miscarriage_n of_o the_o saint_n in_o duty_n that_o be_v to_o be_v refer_v to_o their_o legality_n of_o spirit_n as_o for_o instance_n if_o they_o chance_v through_o extraordinary_a occasion_n to_o have_v miss_v the_o time_n of_o prayer_n morning_n or_o evening_n to_o have_v miss_v the_o read_v their_o number_n of_o chapter_n or_o do_v any_o good_a task_n which_o they_o have_v lay_v upon_o themselves_o than_o they_o have_v a_o great_a fear_n and_o terror_n lest_o god_n shall_v be_v angry_a and_o displease_v with_o they_o though_o indeed_o mercy_n be_v at_o end_v instead_o of_o sacrifice_n but_o such_o as_o these_o belong_v to_o another_o head_n or_o character_n of_o a_o legal_a spirit_n to_o wit_n a_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n which_o i_o shall_v come_v unto_o anon_o i_o have_v now_o perfect_o do_v with_o the_o first_o character_n as_o to_o its_o explication_n proof_n and_o application_n strict_a or_o more_o strict_a morallist_n be_v legality_n if_o man_n will_v seek_v to_o be_v justify_v by_o the_o law_n they_o will_v endeavour_v at_o least_o to_o keep_v the_o whole_a law_n and_o if_o they_o know_v they_o fall_v short_a of_o it_o as_o those_o profane_a wicked_a man_n which_o you_o mention_v out_o of_o isaiah_n jeremiah_n and_o other_o place_n that_o be_v very_o wicked_a do_v confidence_n in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n though_o i_o may_v show_v that_o out_o of_o the_o very_a way_n itself_o these_o thing_n will_v seem_v to_o spring_v or_o at_o least_o that_o it_o be_v very_o agreeable_a and_o suitable_a to_o the_o gospel-way_n of_o treat_v god_n that_o it_o shall_v be_v accompany_v with_o peace_n joy_n and_o holy_a boldness_n in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n for_o if_o the_o great_a and_o holy_a god_n will_v admit_v any_o sinful_a creature_n whilst_o they_o remain_v in_o part_n sinful_a into_o fellowship_n and_o holy_a boldness_n with_o himself_o who_o can_v they_o be_v other_o than_o those_o that_o renounce_v all_o love_n to_o sin_n abhor_v themselves_o by_o reason_n of_o sin_n and_o cast_v themselves_o for_o pardon_n and_o salvation_n pure_o upon_o his_o mercy_n and_o grace_n all_o which_o i_o have_v show_v to_o be_v essential_a to_o the_o evangelical_n or_o gospel-way_n the_o way_n of_o faith_n and_o grace_n which_o i_o be_o contend_v for_o beside_o
