of_o christ_n resist_v the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o the_o like_a now_o herein_o lie_v the_o great_a mistake_n of_o the_o world_n in_o estimate_v of_o sin_n at_o the_o name_n of_o the_o former_a we_o be_v ready_a to_o tremble_v and_o so_o indeed_o we_o ought_v and_o not_o only_o so_o but_o we_o ought_v to_o shun_v and_o avoid_v those_o that_o be_v guilty_a of_o they_o as_o monster_n of_o men._n and_o trivial_a sin_n now_o those_o sin_n that_o we_o thus_o slight_a be_v incomparable_o the_o great_a and_o the_o vile_a sin_n murder_n adultery_n blasphemy_n and_o the_o rest_n of_o those_o cry_a impiety_n can_v not_o damn_v the_o soul_n be_v it_o not_o for_o unbelief_n and_o impenitency_n it_o be_v not_o the_o swearer_n or_o the_o drunkard_n that_o perish_v but_o it_o be_v the_o vnbeliever_n he_o that_o believe_v not_o be_v condemn_v already_o john_n 3.18_o and_o so_o hate_v of_o god_n and_o a_o secret_a scorn_v and_o despise_v of_o holiness_n and_o the_o way_n of_o god_n these_o be_v in_o the_o stead_n of_o god_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o yet_o true_o who_o among_o we_o be_v not_o in_o some_o kind_n or_o other_o guilty_a of_o this_o presumption_n why_o sir_n if_o god_n shall_v now_o come_v down_o in_o terrible_a majesty_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o we_o and_o if_o he_o shall_v ask_v every_o man_n conscience_n here_o one_o by_o one_o conscience_n be_v thou_o ever_o resist_v be_v thou_o ever_o oppose_v in_o execute_v thy_o office_n to_o this_o and_o to_o that_o soul_n why_o where_o sit_v the_o person_n who_o conscience_n must_v not_o answer_v yes_o lord_n out_o the_o true_a cause_n of_o that_o strong_a propension_n that_o there_o be_v in_o all_o man_n unto_o sin_n while_o the_o soul_n enjoy_v the_o image_n of_o god_n it_o seek_v especial_o to_o do_v all_o in_o reference_n unto_o god_n but_o now_o that_o it_o have_v lose_v that_o image_n it_o can_v any_o long_o raise_v up_o its_o action_n to_o a_o suitableness_n to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o now_o it_o sink_v they_o and_o seek_v only_o to_o please_v its_o own_o carnal_a desire_n and_o appetite_n take_v the_o whole_a resolution_n of_o it_o in_o two_o or_o three_o word_n the_o nature_n of_o the_o soul_n make_v it_o prone_a and_o incline_v to_o act_n for_o it_o be_v a_o busy_a active_a creature_n and_o if_o it_o act_v it_o must_v sin_n because_o it_o have_v not_o the_o image_n of_o god_n to_o raise_v its_o action_n to_o a_o holy_a and_o divine_a conformity_n to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o now_o to_o be_v prone_a to_o act_n be_v to_o be_v prone_a to_o sin_n and_o this_o be_v the_o true_a ground_n of_o that_o strong_a propension_n that_o be_v in_o all_o man_n to_o that_o which_o be_v evil_a and_o sinful_a quest_n but_o you_o will_v say_v if_o this_o proneness_n to_o sin_n be_v from_o the_o loss_n of_o god_n image_n how_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o those_o who_o be_v renew_v again_o according_a to_o the_o image_n of_o god_n do_v still_o complain_v of_o this_o strong_a proneness_n and_o propension_n to_o sin_n answ_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o those_o of_o fall_v mankind_n to_o who_o god_n be_v please_v to_o restore_v his_o image_n in_o regeneration_n according_o as_o this_o image_n be_v more_o or_o less_o perfect_a so_o be_v this_o proneness_n to_o sin_v more_o or_o less_o strong_a but_o because_o the_o best_a be_v but_o in_o part_n renew_v therefore_o this_o sinful_a proneness_n be_v but_o in_o part_n destroy_v in_o the_o best_a grace_n weaken_v it_o but_o grace_n do_v not_o quite_o remove_v it_o and_o therefore_o the_o holy_a christian_n have_v and_o shall_v have_v as_o long_o as_o he_o live_v in_o this_o world_n '_o cause_n to_o complain_v with_o the_o apostle_n roman_n 7._o 23._o i_o see_v the_o old_a man_n in_o this_o life_n never_o lose_v one_o limb_n though_o it_o be_v weaken_v and_o consume_a away_o in_o his_o whole_a body_n take_v a_o child_n of_o god_n that_o before_o his_o conversion_n have_v a_o strong_a propension_n to_o any_o sin_n suppose_v what_o sin_n you_o will_v though_o never_o so_o foul_a and_o horrid_a the_o same_o propension_n still_o remain_v it_o be_v not_o indeed_o so_o violent_a and_o rage_a as_o it_o be_v but_o there_o it_o be_v it_o be_v abate_v and_o overcome_v by_o grace_n but_o still_o there_o be_v the_o same_o proneness_n to_o sin_n it_o may_v be_v a_o christian_n be_v not_o so_o sensible_a of_o this_o propension_n to_o sin_n not_o so_o frequent_o as_o former_o he_o have_v but_o yet_o the_o experience_n of_o the_o best_a sometime_o place_n whence_o all_o argument_n against_o sin_n be_v draw_v and_o those_o be_v the_o law_n and_o the_o gospel_n both_o of_o these_o administer_v such_o weapon_n that_o if_o right_o use_v be_v very_o effectual_a for_o the_o beat_n down_o of_o sin_n and_o common_o restrain_v grace_n use_v those_o only_a that_o be_v borrow_v from_o the_o law_n it_o urge_v the_o command_n it_o thunder_v the_o curse_n it_o brandish_v the_o sword_n of_o justice_n and_o make_v report_n of_o nothing_o but_o hell_n and_o eternal_a damnation_n and_o such_o like_a argument_n that_o scare_v man_n from_o the_o commit_n though_o this_o too_o be_v well_o yet_o know_v if_o it_o be_v all_o this_o be_v no_o more_o than_o what_o restraint_n and_o common_a grace_n may_v perform_v it_o be_v the_o proper_a character_n of_o restrain_v grace_n to_o keep_v man_n back_o from_o the_o commission_n of_o sin_n only_o by_o dread_n and_o fear_n of_o punishment_n but_o now_o sanctify_a grace_n that_o especial_o betake_v itself_o to_o gospel_n argument_n and_o consider_v how_o disingenuous_a it_o be_v to_o sin_n against_o a_o reconcile_a and_o a_o gracious_a father_n against_o a_o crucify_a and_o a_o bleed_a saviour_n against_o a_o patient_a and_o long_a suffer_a spirit_n and_o heap_n up_o many_o such_o like_a ingenious_a argument_n that_o work_v kind_o upon_o the_o heart_n he_o lead_v every_o temptation_n to_o the_o cross_n of_o christ_n and_o there_o show_v it_o his_o saviour_n hang_v and_o bleed_v and_o can_v i_o commit_v this_o sin_n that_o have_v draw_v so_o much_o blood_n from_o my_o saviour_n to_o expiate_v it_o and_o will_v draw_v so_o much_o blood_n from_o my_o conscience_n to_o perpetrate_v it_o do_v he_o die_v to_o free_v i_o from_o the_o condemnation_n of_o it_o and_o shall_v i_o wilful_o rush_v into_o the_o commission_n of_o it_o no_o o_o lord_n thy_o love_n withhold_v i_o i_o can_v do_v this_o thing_n and_o sin_n against_o so_o rich_a so_o free_a and_o infinite_a mercy_n and_o seed_n till_o the_o influence_n of_o the_o approach_a and_o exciting_a grace_n of_o god_n awaken_v it_o and_o chafe_v its_o benumb_a virtue_n and_o then_o it_o stir_v and_o thrust_v away_o all_o that_o dung_n and_o filth_n of_o corruption_n under_o which_o it_o lay_v bury_v and_o then_o it_o flow_v forth_o into_o actual_a grace_n habitual_a and_o exciting_a grace_n must_v both_o concur_v to_o the_o produce_v of_o actual_a grace_n as_o necessary_o as_o there_o must_v be_v the_o concurrence_n both_o of_o the_o heat_n of_o the_o sun_n and_o of_o life_n in_o the_o seed_n to_o produce_v a_o flower_n now_o by_o god_n exciting_a inherent_a habitual_a grace_n in_o the_o soul_n he_o keep_v man_n from_o sin_v two_o way_n first_o by_o prevention_n and_o second_o by_o suppression_n of_o sin_n first_o hereby_o he_o prevent_v and_o exclude_v those_o sin_n that_o werâ—_n we_o not_o employ_v in_o the_o exercise_n of_o gracâ—_n we_o will_v commit_v when_o the_o soul_n be_v constant_o employ_v in_o holy_a and_o spiritual_a affair_n sin_n have_v then_o neither_o room_n noâ—_n opportunity_n to_o put_v
very_o dismal_a unto_o the_o mind_n of_o sinner_n yet_o be_v there_o far_o worse_o behind_o then_o all_o this_o still_o and_o that_o which_o carry_v in_o it_o far_o great_a terror_n and_o amazement_n and_o that_o be_v the_o sin_n that_o deserve_v death_n and_o the_o hell_n that_o follow_v it_o for_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v 15.56_o 1_o cor._n 15.56_o the_o sting_n of_o death_n be_v sin_n and_o it_o be_v no_o wonder_n that_o man_n who_o be_v conscious_a to_o themselves_o of_o condemn_a guilt_n dare_v not_o think_v of_o stand_v before_o the_o dreadful_a tribunal_n of_o god_n and_o death_n now_o be_v god_n sergeant_n to_o arrest_v they_o and_o to_o bring_v they_o thither_o they_o can_v bear_v the_o thought_n of_o eternal_a vengeance_n and_o prepare_v torment_n to_o be_v for_o ever_o inflict_v on_o they_o by_o the_o almighty_a power_n of_o a_o incense_a god_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v no_o wonder_n that_o they_o put_v far_o from_o they_o the_o thought_n of_o death_n because_o their_o conscience_n tell_v they_o that_o that_o day_n whensoever_o it_o come_v will_v be_v to_o they_o a_o evil_a day_n many_o more_o reason_n may_v be_v give_v of_o this_o brutishness_n of_o man_n in_o put_v off_o the_o thought_n of_o death_n and_o preparation_n for_o it_o but_o these_o shall_v suffice_v the_o next_o thing_n that_o i_o shall_v do_v shall_v be_v to_o lay_v down_o some_o consideration_n that_o may_v fore-arm_n christian_n against_o the_o fear_n and_o terror_n of_o death_n death_n consideration_n to_o arm_n man_n against_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n and_o make_v they_o
