second_o book_n the_o three_o book_n of_o the_o case_n of_o conscience_n concern_v man_n as_o he_o stand_v in_o relation_n to_o man_n chap._n i._n of_o the_o nature_n and_o difference_n of_o virtue_n and_o the_o order_n of_o the_o question_n thus_o far_o we_o be_v proceed_v in_o the_o handle_n of_o two_o sort_n of_o question_n whereof_o some_o do_v concern_v man_n as_o he_o be_v consider_v apart_o all_o those_o question_n of_o conscience_n that_o be_v incident_a to_o the_o life_n of_o man_n and_o which_o do_v belong_v unto_o man_n as_o he_o be_v a_o member_n of_o some_o society_n whether_o it_o be_v the_o family_n the_o church_n or_o the_o commonwealth_n for_o the_o better_a and_o more_o orderly_a proceed_n in_o this_o discourse_n some_o convenient_a subject_n or_o matter_n be_v to_o be_v propound_v whereunto_o all_o the_o question_n that_o follow_v may_v fit_o be_v reduce_v now_o of_o all_o other_o the_o most_o convenient_a subject_n in_o this_o kind_n be_v virtue_n and_o therefore_o according_a the_o difference_n of_o virtue_n we_o will_v distinguish_v the_o question_n into_o three_o several_a sort_n but_o before_o we_o proceed_v to_o particular_n it_o shall_v not_o be_v amiss_o to_o speak_v somewhat_o general_o of_o virtue_n so_o far_o forth_o as_o the_o knowledge_n thereof_o may_v give_v light_n to_o the_o thing_n that_o follow_v touch_v virtue_n two_o thing_n be_v brief_o heathen_a man_n it_o have_v the_o nature_n of_o a_o gift_n that_o flow_v immediate_o from_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o this_o i_o put_v in_o the_o first_o place_n to_o confute_v the_o receive_a error_n of_o the_o wise_a heathen_a philosopher_n which_o call_v virtue_n a_o habit_n of_o the_o mind_n obtain_v and_o confirm_v by_o custom_n use_n and_o practice_v second_o i_o call_v it_o such_o a_o gift_n as_o be_v also_o a_o part_n of_o regeneration_n and_o this_o be_v add_v for_o two_o cause_n first_o that_o we_o may_v put_v a_o difference_n between_o christian_a and_o heathen_a virtue_n for_o howbeit_o the_o same_o virtue_n in_o kind_n and_o name_n be_v and_o may_v be_v find_v both_o in_o they_o that_o profess_v christ_n and_o those_o also_o that_o be_v ignorant_a of_o the_o true_a god_n yet_o they_o be_v in_o they_o after_o a_o diverse_a manner_n for_o in_o heathen_a man_n they_o be_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n but_o not_o part_n of_o regeneration_n and_o new_a birth_n but_o in_o those_o that_o be_v true_a christian_n they_o be_v indeed_o not_o only_o the_o gift_n of_o god_n spirit_n but_o also_o essential_a part_n of_o regeneration_n that_o we_o may_v the_o better_a yet_o conceive_v this_o difference_n we_o must_v understand_v that_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o man_n be_v twofold_a restrain_v and_o renew_v restrain_v be_v that_o which_o bridle_v and_o restrain_v the_o corruption_n of_o man_n heart_n from_o break_v forth_o into_o outward_a action_n for_o the_o common_a good_a that_o society_n may_v be_v preserve_v and_o one_o man_n may_v live_v orderly_o with_o another_o renew_v grace_n be_v that_o which_o do_v not_o only_o restrain_v the_o corruption_n but_o also_o mortify_v sin_n and_o renew_v the_o heart_n daily_o more_o &_o more_o the_o former_a of_o these_o be_v incident_a to_o heathen_a man_n &_o the_o virtue_n which_o they_o have_v serve_v only_o to_o repress_v the_o act_n of_o sin_n in_o their_o outward_a action_n but_o in_o christian_n heathen_a be_v grace_n of_o god_n yet_o they_o be_v but_o general_a and_o common_a to_o all_o whereas_o the_o virtue_n of_o christian_n be_v special_a grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n sanctify_v and_o of_o unlawful_a flight_n be_v to_o be_v consider_v and_o they_o be_v principal_o four_o the_o first_o be_v when_o god_n put_v into_o a_o man_n heart_n the_o spirit_n of_o courage_n and_o fortitude_n heb._n 6._o 16._o second_o i_o term_v it_o a_o religious_a confirmation_n because_o a_o oath_n be_v a_o part_n of_o god_n religion_n and_o worship_n yea_o it_o be_v sometime_o put_v for_o the_o whole_a worship_n of_o god_n isaiah_n 19_o 28._o in_o that_o day_n shall_v they_o swear_v by_o the_o lord_n of_o host_n that_o be_v they_o shall_v worship_v the_o true_a god_n three_o i_o add_v a_o necessary_a confirmation_n because_o a_o oath_n be_v never_o to_o be_v use_v in_o way_n of_o confirmation_n but_o only_o in_o case_n of_o mere_a necessity_n for_o when_o all_o other_o humane_a proof_n do_v fail_v than_o it_o be_v lawful_a to_o fetch_v testimony_n from_o heaven_n and_o to_o make_v god_n himself_o our_o witness_n in_o this_o case_n alone_o and_o never_o else_o it_o be_v lawful_a to_o into_o the_o bedchamber_n thus_o the_o rich_a man_n that_o have_v great_a revenue_n and_o abundance_n of_o worldly_a wealth_n be_v notwithstanding_o term_v by_o god_n himself_o a_o fool_n because_o he_o gather_v riches_n to_o himself_o and_o be_v not_o rich_a in_o god_n that_o be_v he_o mind_v earthly_a thing_n and_o place_v his_o chief_a felicity_n in_o vain_a and_o transitory_a riches_n not_o once_o forecast_v how_o to_o come_v into_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n that_o he_o may_v be_v save_v to_o this_o rule_n i_o add_v that_o which_o paul_n by_o way_n of_o caveat_n commend_v to_o the_o ephesian_n eph._n 5._o 16._o take_v heed_n that_o you_o walk_v circumspect_o not_o as_o unwise_a but_o as_o wise_a redeem_v the_o time_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v play_v the_o part_n of_o wise_a man_n take_v time_n while_o time_n serve_v lay_v hold_v of_o the_o mean_n of_o salvation_n use_v no_o delay_n in_o heavenly_a matter_n defer_v not_o your_o repentance_n from_o day_n to_o day_n for_o
