first_o case_n he_o may_v think_v and_o his_o reason_n may_v well_o allow_v of_o such_o thought_n my_o charity_n or_o kindness_n be_v with_o a_o eye_n to_o some_o praise_n to_o be_v see_v of_o man_n etc._n etc._n or_o at_o least_o in_o expectation_n of_o some_o future_a reward_n and_o not_o from_o behold_v any_o thing_n of_o good_a in_o he_o in_o the_o second_o case_n he_o may_v with_o the_o kind_n of_o joy_n at_o the_o last_o and_o indeed_o while_o it_o be_v be_v no_o other_o than_o a_o privation_n of_o some_o precede_a joy_n or_o delight_n yet_o retain_v so_o much_o of_o its_o first_o nature_n and_o quality_n that_o upon_o remembrance_n thereof_o and_o if_o it_o be_v real_a it_o can_v be_v utter_o forget_v it_o will_v remain_v as_o a_o guard_n to_o suppress_v the_o treacherous_a please_v against_o the_o excursion_n of_o other_o passion_n and_o consequent_o against_o the_o deceit_n and_o falsehood_n of_o the_o imagination_n the_o imagination_n be_v usual_o of_o a_o tower_a quality_n behold_v all_o worldly_a good_n under_o it_o and_o not_o seldom_o be_v as_o liberal_a of_o its_o promise_n to_o the_o affection_n as_o satan_n to_o our_o saviour_n and_o this_o put_v they_o all_o in_o arm_n and_o whatsoever_o mastery_n victory_n or_o enjoyment_n be_v obtain_v there_o will_v be_v mutiny_n and_o trouble_v and_o disorder_n among_o those_o common_a soldier_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o this_o one_o single_a passion_n raise_v be_v only_o able_a of_o itself_o to_o prevent_v or_o allay_v for_o it_o cool_v the_o imagination_n only_o while_o all_o other_o inflame_v it_o and_o reject_v those_o companion_n of_o envy_n hatred_n malice_n or_o the_o like_a which_o other_o passion_n usual_o call_v in_o to_o their_o assistance_n by_o the_o help_n of_o the_o imagination_n there_o be_v no_o doubt_n neither_o shall_v i_o gainsay_v but_o that_o every_o man_n notwithstanding_o the_o present_a dominion_n of_o sorrow_n or_o any_o other_o moderate_a lawful_a passion_n all_o the_o affection_n through_o a_o rectify_a imagination_n now_o whether_o it_o arise_v at_o any_o time_n from_o the_o weight_n and_o sense_n of_o a_o man_n sin_n the_o loss_n of_o his_o relation_n of_o any_o man_n but_o himself_o the_o space_n of_o one_o moment_n i_o will_v tell_v he_o he_o either_o be_v not_o true_o sorrowful_a or_o i_o understand_v not_o yet_o what_o true_a sorrow_n mean_v whereas_o love_n i_o mean_v not_o that_o which_o be_v pure_a send_v the_o imagination_n on_o a_o thousand_o idle_a errand_n fear_n disturb_v it_o and_o distract_v it_o foolish_a joy_n ravish_v and_o it_o hold_v a_o glass_n to_o itself_o and_o although_o it_o be_v esteem_v a_o heavy_a lumpish_a passion_n which_o no_o way_n quicken_v the_o invention_n a_o faculty_n in_o who_o work_n we_o much_o glory_n though_o it_o work_v our_o shame_n and_o confusion_n in_o the_o end_n but_o rather_o dull_v it_o nay_o though_o it_o be_v not_o of_o itself_o so_o active_a and_o sprightly_a abroad_o as_o some_o other_o passion_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o altogether_o idle_a at_o home_n it_o sweep_v the_o soul_n clean_o of_o much_o rubbish_n cast_v out_o and_o disburthen_n it_o of_o many_o foul_a thing_n and_o invite_v as_o it_o be_v love_n and_o charity_n and_o good_a will_n to_o garnish_v it_o and_o possess_v it_o in_o the_o conclusion_n to_o rectify_v or_o cure_v our_o imagination_n this_o way_n be_v most_o certain_o out_o of_o our_o power_n we_o can_v melt_v ourselves_o thus_o at_o our_o will_n and_o pleasure_n and_o therefore_o it_o may_v seem_v vain_a to_o commend_v it_o to_o any_o man_n i_o only_o mention_v it_o to_o this_o end_n that_o they_o who_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o terrible_a and_o grievous_a may_v prevent_v it_o beforehand_o if_o so_o be_v they_o can_v for_o he_o who_o can_v or_o will_v follow_v the_o plain_n dictate_v of_o right_a reason_n and_o not_o his_o own_o invention_n shall_v never_o certain_o fall_v into_o it_o but_o if_o any_o man_n shall_v have_v do_v health_n than_o ever_o it_o be_v before_o humane_a imagination_n be_v the_o most_o strange_a thing_n in_o nature_n nothing_o so_o strange_o work_v nothing_o so_o strange_o set_v on_o work_n nothing_o so_o deceive_v nothing_o so_o deceivable_a nothing_o so_o sudden_o alterable_a changeable_a or_o mutable_a nor_o by_o such_o various_a and_o divers_a way_n and_o mean_n i_o have_v often_o in_o my_o thought_n compare_v it_o to_o many_o thing_n but_o to_o none_o so_o often_o as_o that_o thing_n which_o our_o saviour_n have_v resemble_v the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n to_o viz._n a_o drag_v net_n which_o by_o the_o impulse_n of_o somewhat_o it_o may_v be_v sometime_o that_o good_a spirit_n we_o have_v mention_v it_o may_v be_v sometime_o a_o evil_a one_o it_o may_v be_v our_o affection_n from_o the_o agitation_n of_o the_o one_o or_o the_o other_o gather_v and_o bring_v into_o this_o land_n of_o we_o thing_n of_o every_o kind_n good_a and_o bad_a which_o if_o some_o other_o faculty_n of_o our_o soul_n be_v not_o able_a to_o distinguish_v and_o sever_v the_o one_o from_o the_o other_o but_o that_o our_o whole_a soul_n do_v embrace_v and_o greedy_o feed_v on_o whatsoever_o be_v bring_v in_o without_o any_o difference_n she_o be_v in_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o danger_n of_o be_v infect_v with_o many_o disease_n and_o so_o much_o the_o rather_o as_o that_o the_o imagination_n be_v of_o equal_a divine_a extraction_n with_o our_o reason_n and_o capable_a to_o work_v without_o regard_n to_o present_a sense_n it_o become_v the_o door_n if_o not_o well_o look_v to_o or_o guard_v by_o which_o satan_n sly_o enter_v in_o to_o the_o possession_n of_o our_o soul_n with_o a_o imaginary_a belief_n against_o reason_n and_o sense_n too_o and_o bring_v we_o to_o entertain_v error_n for_o truth_n evil_a for_o good_a there_o be_v many_o seem_a way_n so_o far_o to_o reclaim_v the_o imagination_n and_o so_o far_o to_o stop_v the_o common_a usual_a course_n of_o its_o extravagancy_n as_o that_o we_o become_v not_o confound_v nor_o great_o and_o grievous_o disturb_v in_o the_o soul_n thereby_o that_o have_v through_o that_o very_a faculty_n itself_o occur_v to_o my_o mind_n i_o have_v once_o thought_n to_o set_v they_o down_o but_o when_o all_o be_v say_v that_o can_v be_v say_v or_o think_v that_o can_v be_v think_v and_o we_o proceed_v to_o make_v our_o judgement_n thereupon_o that_o one_o chief_a divine_a faculty_n reason_n which_o god_n have_v place_v as_o his_o substitute_n in_o our_o soul_n tell_v we_o our_o thought_n of_o themselves_o be_v vain_a and_o show_v we_o our_o insufficiency_n and_o inform_v we_o we_o be_v as_o of_o ourselves_o a_o thing_n of_o naught_o and_o leave_v to_o our_o invention_n worse_o than_o naught_o it_o bid_v we_o cease_v our_o vain_a imagination_n if_o so_o be_v we_o can_v and_o humble_o resign_v ourselves_o to_o that_o very_a power_n from_o which_o we_o think_v so_o to_o think_v as_o may_v be_v most_o please_a thereto_o and_o safe_a for_o we_o we_o be_v all_o god_n know_v as_o to_o what_o be_v good_a dull_a of_o invention_n frail_a of_o
