hot_a and_o dry_a and_o that_o of_o the_o female_a cold_a and_o moist_a it_o follow_v that_o all_o the_o part_n of_o either_o sex_n ought_v to_o have_v different_a disposition_n and_o beauty_n but_o forasmuch_o as_o man_n have_v understanding_n and_o reason_n beyond_o all_o other_o creature_n and_o that_o that_o faculty_n be_v natural_o capable_a of_o all_o thing_n can_v have_v its_o perfection_n but_o by_o possess_v they_o it_o must_v acquire_v disposition_n necessary_a to_o attain_v this_o perfection_n and_o these_o be_v the_o intellectual_a and_o moral_a habit_n which_o cause_n that_o accidental_a and_o acquire_v beauty_n of_o which_o we_o have_v speak_v and_o which_o receive_v their_o last_o accomplishment_n in_o the_o action_n they_o ought_v to_o produce_v for_o the_o end_n be_v the_o last_o perfection_n there_o be_v nothing_o absolute_o perfect_a without_o a_o end_n and_o action_n be_v the_o end_n of_o all_o thing_n this_o be_v what_o we_o can_v say_v in_o general_a of_o the_o name_n of_o beauty_n and_o must_v be_v know_v before_o we_o seek_v the_o cause_n which_o oblige_v we_o to_o the_o love_n thereof_o for_o although_o some_o have_v say_v we_o shall_v not_o ask_v why_o beauty_n please_v and_o that_o it_o be_v as_o much_o as_o if_o we_o will_v know_v why_o fire_n warm_v that_o it_o be_v its_o nature_n and_o the_o essential_a property_n it_o have_v whereof_o there_o be_v no_o reason_n to_o be_v give_v yet_o all_o have_v not_o be_v of_o this_o opinion_n plato_n do_v not_o believe_v that_o this_o enquiry_n be_v unworthy_a of_o his_o socrates_n and_o there_o the_o school_n of_o aristotle_n will_v not_o admit_v and_o that_o at_o last_o we_o must_v always_o come_v to_o that_o to_o know_v wherefore_o the_o sovereign_a goodness_n be_v amiable_a we_o be_v oblige_v to_o take_v another_o way_n which_o may_v lead_v we_o to_o these_o supreme_a truth_n we_o must_v then_o say_v that_o what_o be_v good_a and_o convenient_a to_o a_o thing_n perfect_v it_o when_o these_o object_n unite_v themselves_o to_o these_o faculty_n they_o give_v they_o a_o perfection_n which_o they_o have_v not_o and_o of_o which_o they_o be_v capable_a and_o the_o knowledge_n they_o have_v of_o this_o perfection_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o the_o agreement_n they_o find_v therein_o which_o be_v afterward_o follow_v by_o that_o love_n and_o pleasure_n which_o the_o appetite_n form_n when_o the_o understanding_n and_o the_o imagination_n have_v propose_v it_o as_o a_o thing_n good_a and_o convenient_a for_o they_o but_o forasmuch_o as_o there_o be_v object_n which_o cause_n more_o love_n and_o pleasure_n than_o other_o they_o must_v necessary_o much_o more_o perfect_a the_o know_a faculty_n and_o it_o be_v those_o infallible_o which_o be_v the_o most_o perfect_a to_o the_o assault_n by_o the_o assurance_n and_o certainty_n which_o she_o take_v of_o the_o success_n of_o her_o undertake_n by_o the_o resolution_n she_o make_v to_o employ_v all_o those_o faculty_n which_o ought_v to_o obey_v she_o and_o by_o the_o command_n which_o she_o give_v they_o to_o prepare_v themselves_o for_o the_o combat_n then_o the_o appetite_n obey_v her_o order_n strengthen_v itself_o stiffen_a and_o settle_v itself_o in_o itself_o that_o the_o enemy_n may_v not_o surprise_v it_o and_o that_o it_o may_v be_v in_o a_o condition_n to_o resist_v it_o if_o it_o happen_v it_o but_o the_o assault_n nor_o to_o require_v the_o presence_n of_o the_o ill_a as_o a_o necessary_a condition_n to_o produce_v it_o answ_n 1_o but_o all_o these_o reason_n do_v not_o destroy_v the_o truth_n which_o we_o have_v establish_v for_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o when_o boldness_n and_o anger_n rise_v in_o the_o absence_n of_o ill_a the_o imagination_n fancy_v it_o to_o itself_o as_o present_v that_o strong_a and_o lively_a apprehension_n she_o have_v find_v thereof_o have_v bereave_v it_o of_o the_o remembrance_n of_o its_o absence_n neither_o be_v this_o difficult_a to_o conceive_v if_o we_o do_v but_o consider_v the_o manner_n with_o which_o she_o work_v which_o make_v she_o easy_o fall_v into_o this_o error_n forasmuch_o as_o not_o see_v the_o thing_n but_o by_o their_o image_n which_o be_v present_a with_o it_o ought_v also_o always_o to_o represent_v the_o thing_n as_o present_v unto_o it_o do_v she_o not_o make_v reflection_n on_o their_o absence_n which_o be_v but_o a_o stranger_n and_o exterior_a condition_n of_o the_o body_n of_o the_o image_n so_o that_o be_v no_o party_n of_o the_o principal_a figure_n the_o imagination_n can_v be_v never_o so_o present_a to_o her_o thought_n and_o of_o necessity_n we_o must_v believe_v that_o to_o raise_v such_o kind_n of_o passion_n that_o she_o fancy_n to_o herself_o that_o her_o enemy_n be_v at_o hand_n that_o they_o be_v fall_v on_o she_o and_o that_o she_o be_v go_v to_o be_v oppress_v by_o they_o unless_o she_o assault_v they_o answ_n 2_o as_o for_o hope_n its_o true_a that_o boldness_n be_v never_o without_o it_o that_o a_o bold_a man_n always_o hope_n and_o that_o still_o there_o be_v some_o good_a to_o come_v which_o seem_v to_o be_v the_o motive_n of_o his_o undertake_n but_o from_o thence_o it_o follow_v not_o that_o the_o present_a ill_n shall_v not_o be_v the_o true_a object_n of_o boldness_n or_o that_o he_o be_v oblige_v to_o do_v aught_o else_o but_o to_o assault_v and_o combat_v it_o for_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o difference_n in_o say_v that_o hope_v always_o keep_v company_n with_o boldness_n and_o in_o say_v that_o hope_n and_o boldness_n have_v one_o and_o the_o same_o object_n one_o end_n and_o one_o employment_n they_o both_o of_o they_o serve_v as_o well_o as_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o passion_n to_o attain_v the_o end_n which_o the_o soul_n propose_v itself_o but_o it_o be_v a_o end_n which_o be_v strange_a to_o they_o and_o concern_v they_o not_o every_o one_o have_v his_o own_o proper_a and_o peculiar_a one_o which_o it_o at_o first_o encounter_n and_o whereto_o it_o natural_o tend_v without_o take_v care_n for_o the_o general_n which_o concern_v the_o soul_n they_o proper_o be_v soldier_n which_o march_v and_o fight_v without_o by_o their_o true_a being_n and_o that_o consequent_o there_o be_v a_o real_a union_n and_o another_o that_o be_v not_o which_o the_o school_n call_v intentional_a and_o which_o we_o may_v name_v ideal_o you_o may_v observe_v that_o the_o union_n which_o the_o appetite_n make_v with_o the_o object_n which_o the_o imagination_n propose_v be_v of_o the_o latter_a rank_n because_o the_o true_a be_v of_o thing_n enter_v not_o into_o the_o imagination_n it_o be_v their_o idea_n and_o their_o image_n only_o and_o this_o union_n be_v that_o alone_a which_o natural_o belong_v to_o the_o also_o of_o all_o the_o inclination_n which_o be_v in_o the_o part_n so_o that_o the_o imagination_n or_o the_o understanding_n propose_v to_o it_o what_o be_v fit_a it_o seek_v it_o for_o they_o and_o endeavour_n to_o procure_v they_o the_o enjoyment_n thereof_o and_o than_o if_o they_o be_v capable_a real_o to_o unite_v themselves_o with_o their_o object_n it_o covet_v their_o union_n but_o this_o hinder_v not_o but_o that_o it_o unite_v itself_o before_o with_o they_o by_o a_o union_n proper_a to_o it_o and_o which_o be_v as_o the_o principle_n and_o spring_n of_o all_o other_o union_n belong_v to_o the_o soul_n perhaps_o you_o will_v say_v that_o the_o understanding_n and_o the_o imagination_n in_o the_o same_o manner_n unite_v themselves_o to_o what_o be_v fit_a for_o they_o and_o that_o therefore_o love_n may_v be_v aswell_o form_v there_o as_o in_o the_o appetite_n but_o the_o difference_n be_v great_a because_o that_o the_o object_n come_v and_o go_v in_o the_o understanding_n and_o in_o the_o imagination_n and_o the_o knowledge_n they_o have_v of_o they_o be_v rather_o gain_v by_o rest_n then_o by_o motion_n as_o avistotle_n say_v quite_o contrary_a to_o the_o appetite_n which_o move_v itself_o towards_o its_o object_n and_o go_v out_o as_o it_o be_v of_o itself_o to_o unite_v itself_o thereto_o so_o that_o the_o union_n which_o be_v make_v in_o the_o understanding_n and_o in_o the_o imagination_n be_v pure_o passive_a without_o any_o motion_n of_o its_o faculty_n but_o that_o of_o the_o appetite_n be_v active_a and_o perform_v with_o agitation_n consider_v also_o that_o the_o union_n make_v by_o the_o appetite_n be_v more_o perfect_a than_o that_o which_o be_v make_v by_o knowledge_n for_o as_o much_o as_o the_o mind_n may_v have_v a_o aversion_n from_o some_o thing_n which_o it_o have_v conceive_v which_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o separation_n and_o therefore_o the_o union_n thereof_o be_v not_o so_o perfect_a as_o that_o of_o the_o appetite_n which_o can_v endure_v this_o division_n and_o which_o consequent_o be_v the_o most_o accomplish_v which_o can_v be_v find_v in_o the_o action_n of_o life_n but_o if_o love_n be_v a_o motion_n of_o the_o soul_n to_o unite_v itself_o to_o what_o be_v lovely_a it_o seem_v as_o if_o when_o it_o be_v unite_v thereunto_o there_o then_o shall_v be_v no_o more_o motion_n and_o consequent_o no_o more_o love_n and_o as_o this_o union_n may_v be_v make_v in_o a_o moment_n for_o that_o there_o be_v nothing_o can_v hinder_v it_o it_o seem_v as_o if_o this_o motion_n also_o be_v make_v in_o a_o instant_n and_o that_o therefore_o love_n shall_v not_o last_v any_o long_o which_o will_v be_v a_o very_a strange_a proposition_n and_o contrary_a to_o the_o truth_n to_o answer_v this_o objection_n you_o must_v observe_v that_o there_o be_v thing_n which_o move_v themselves_o to_o attain_v to_o some_o end_n separate_v from_o their_o motion_n and_o that_o there_o be_v other_o which_z find_v in_o the_o motion_n itself_o the_o end_n they_o seek_v the_o first_o cease_v to_o move_v when_o they_o have_v attain_v their_o end_n but_o those_o who_o have_v no_o other_o end_n but_o motion_n or_o at_o lest_o none_o that_o be_v separate_v from_o their_o motion_n never_o pretend_v to_o rest_v and_o as_o rest_n be_v a_o perfection_n in_o those_o so_o it_o be_v a_o imperfection_n in_o these_o now_o the_o appetite_n be_v of_o this_o latter_a kind_n which_o true_o move_v to_o unite_v itself_o to_o what_o be_v good_a but_o the_o union_n it_o seek_v can_v be_v effect_v but_o in_o motion_n and_o when_o that_o cease_v it_o vanish_v so_o that_o while_o the_o belove_a object_n be_v present_v it_o must_v incessant_o agitate_v itself_o to_o obtain_v the_o end_n it_o desire_v which_o be_v to_o unite_v itself_o thereunto_o and_o if_o it_o chance_v to_o rest_v it_o proceed_v from_o that_o the_o object_n be_v no_o long_o present_v with_o it_o or_o at_o least_o that_o it_o be_v no_o more_o offer_v unto_o it_o as_o good_a love_v then_o be_v a_o motion_n and_o a_o union_n of_o the_o appetite_n to_o what_o be_v lovely_a whether_o absent_a or_o present_a because_o its_o absence_n hinder_v not_o the_o imagination_n from_o propose_v the_o idea_n thereof_o to_o the_o appetite_n which_o be_v the_o only_a one_o with_o which_o it_o natural_o can_v unite_v its_o true_a that_o work_n for_o other_o power_n as_o we_o have_v say_v it_o stop_v not_o at_o this_o simple_a union_n it_o seek_v what_o be_v fit_a also_o for_o they_o it_o desire_v for_o the_o see_v and_o hear_v that_o their_o object_n may_v be_v at_o a_o reasonable_a distance_n for_o touch_v and_o taste_v that_o they_o may_v be_v immediate_o unite_v to_o their_o organ_n in_o fine_a as_o many_o way_n as_o thing_n can_v be_v unite_v the_o appetite_n and_o the_o will_v wish_v a_o fit_a union_n for_o they_o and_o you_o must_v confess_v that_o the_o concourse_n of_o all_o those_o motion_n make_v the_o passion_n of_o love_n complete_a and_o entire_a and_o the_o first_o of_o which_o we_o have_v speak_v although_o it_o contain_v all_o its_o essence_n and_o its_o form_n yet_o have_v it_o not_o all_o its_o extent_n we_o may_v say_v it_o be_v the_o source_n and_o that_o the_o other_o be_v the_o brook_n which_o increase_v it_o let_v we_o now_o see_v what_o this_o particular_a agitation_n be_v which_o the_o appetite_n cause_v to_o make_v this_o union_n and_o in_o what_o its_o different_a from_o that_o which_o be_v to_o be_v find_v in_o joy_n in_o desire_n and_o in_o hope_n by_o which_o as_o well_o as_o by_o love_n it_o seem_v that_o the_o soul_n will_v unite_v itself_o to_o the_o good_a which_o be_v present_v to_o it_o for_o it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a for_o the_o perfect_a knowledge_n of_o the_o passion_n to_o say_v that_o they_o be_v motion_n unless_o you_o observe_v the_o difference_n of_o these_o motion_n and_o unless_o you_o make_v know_v the_o different_a impression_n and_o the_o diverss_n progress_n which_o the_o diversity_n of_o these_o object_n cause_n in_o the_o appetite_n you_o must_v then_o suppose_v there_o be_v some_o relation_n between_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o those_o of_o the_o body_n and_o that_o the_o difference_n which_o be_v find_v in_o these_o in_o some_o manner_n happen_v in_o the_o other_o for_o since_o the_o effect_n be_v like_o
