invite_v the_o israelite_n in_o the_o same_o manner_n unto_o himself_o that_o the_o hen_n do_v her_o chicken_n wherein_o we_o have_v great_a cause_n to_o admire_v the_o unspeakable_a goodness_n of_o and_o so_o to_o lose_v all_o that_o grace_n which_o by_o his_o mean_n we_o have_v with_o god_n therefore_o it_o be_v needful_a that_o still_o we_o shall_v require_v that_o first_o degree_n of_o god_n favour_n to_o hold_v out_o and_o be_v continue_v towards_o we_o for_o the_o continuation_n of_o all_o other_o mercy_n whatsoever_o which_o depend_v upon_o it_o and_o in_o truth_n this_o second_o a_o gracious_a and_o amiable_a aspect_n upon_o they_o first_o from_o hence_o let_v we_o observe_v the_o chief_a and_o doct._n 1_v principall_a cause_n of_o god_n favour_n to_o we_o namely_o favour_n the_o cause_n of_o god_n favour_n his_o own_o free_a will_n and_o gracious_a disposition_n to_o favour_n us._n for_o though_o indeed_o christ_n obedience_n do_v merit_v the_o favour_n of_o god_n for_o be_v also_o the_o cause_n of_o that_o acceptance_n which_o we_o find_v with_o he_o through_o christ_n for_o that_o which_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o the_o cause_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o the_o thing_n cause_v and_o therefore_o grace_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o grace_n that_o be_v to_o say_v god_n own_o gracious_a inclination_n of_o his_o will_n towards_o we_o to_o do_v good_a to_o we_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o that_o so_o great_a grace_n which_o we_o find_v in_o his_o eye_n and_o herein_o differ_v god_n favour_n from_o man_n man_n favour_n though_o it_o make_v he_o do_v good_a to_o the_o party_n favour_v yet_o first_o of_o all_o it_o presuppose_v some_o good_a in_o the_o man_n favour_v a_o attractive_a and_o drawer_n of_o this_o his_o favour_n now_o god_n favour_n as_o it_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o all_o other_o mercy_n we_o daily_o receive_v so_o be_v it_o also_o the_o cause_n of_o itself_o as_o we_o show_v and_o therefore_o it_o do_v not_o presuppose_v any_o good_a thing_n in_o we_o before_o but_o bring_v with_o it_o that_o good_a thing_n namely_o christ_n jesus_n which_o must_v uphold_v and_o maintain_v this_o his_o favour_n the_o use_n of_o this_o doctrine_n be_v to_o humble_v we_o in_o ourselves_o as_o have_v not_o the_o least_o spark_n of_o goodness_n in_o ourselves_o and_o to_o make_v we_o ascribe_v all_o praise_n and_o glory_n in_o every_o thing_n to_o god_n be_v that_o we_o shall_v chief_o and_o principal_o desire_v either_o for_o ourselves_o or_o other_o our_o child_n wife_n kindred_n father_n and_o mother_n acquaintance_n etc._n etc._n viz._n this_o stir_v we_o to_o thanksgiving_n so_o the_o feel_n of_o our_o want_n and_o weakness_n mix_v always_o with_o those_o thing_n wherein_o god_n goodness_n show_v itself_o must_v drive_v we_o to_o prayer_n three_o we_o may_v observe_v that_o philemon_z doct._n 3_o be_v such_o a_o one_o as_o minister_v to_o paul_n just_a occasion_n as_o of_o prayer_n so_o likewise_o of_o thanksgiving_n we_o must_v labour_v herein_o to_o be_v like_o he_o that_o other_o special_o god_n minister_n who_o either_o see_v we_o or_o hear_v of_o we_o may_v have_v cause_n not_o only_o to_o pray_v for_o we_o but_o also_o to_o praise_v god_n for_o us._n many_o there_o be_v that_o we_o have_v cause_n to_o pray_v for_o and_o that_o with_o great_a grief_n that_o they_o be_v so_o bad_a but_o there_o be_v small_a matter_n for_o thanksgiving_n in_o they_o but_o we_o shall_v be_v such_o that_o our_o friend_n may_v pray_v for_o we_o not_o with_o grief_n but_o joy_n and_o give_v of_o thanks_n unto_o god_n for_o us._n messenger_n that_o this_o be_v first_o then_o observe_v that_o the_o great_a grace_n we_o doct._n 1_o hear_v any_o of_o our_o brethren_n to_o have_v the_o more_o fervent_a great_a pray_v for_o those_o most_o who_o grace_n be_v great_a prayer_n ought_v we_o to_o pour_v out_o for_o they_o unto_o the_o lord_n as_o appeareth_z in_o that_o place_n coloss_n 1._o 3_o 4._o we_o give_v thanks_n to_o god_n we_o not_o rest_v content_v with_o common_a gift_n of_o nature_n but_o let_v we_o put_v upon_o the_o earring_n of_o nature_n the_o jewel_n of_o grace_n then_o may_v we_o have_v joy_n of_o ourselves_o and_o cause_n to_o bless_v the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n not_o but_o that_o we_o shall_v give_v thanks_n for_o other_o common_a grace_n but_o yet_o first_o as_o fruit_n of_o these_o and_o second_o special_o and_o principal_o for_o these_o account_v one_o dram_n of_o faith_n one_o grain_n of_o grace_n far_o above_o many_o pound_n of_o natural_a part_n think_v ourselves_o more_o behold_v to_o god_n for_o that_o small_a measure_n of_o sanctification_n which_o we_o have_v then_o for_o all_o the_o ornament_n of_o nature_n whatsoever_o therefore_o spiritual_a blessing_n in_o christ_n shall_v so_o affect_v we_o and_o so_o possess_v and_o take_v up_o our_o mind_n and_o meditation_n that_o we_o may_v seem_v in_o a_o holy_a kind_n of_o forgetfulness_n to_o pass_v by_o the_o petty_a inferior_a blessing_n of_o this_o life_n as_o have_v no_o leisure_n almost_o to_o think_v of_o they_o three_o in_o that_o paul_n make_v philemon_n faith_n doct._n 3_o and_o love_v the_o matter_n of_o his_o thanksgiving_n and_o rejoice_v with_o he_o we_o learn_v that_o much_o more_o be_v faith_n and_o love_v a_o just_a cause_n of_o rejoice_v to_o the_o owner_n of_o they_o why_o then_o shall_v the_o child_n of_o god_n at_o any_o time_n so_o hang_v down_o the_o head_n and_o be_v deject_a in_o mind_n but_o that_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o his_o grief_n he_o shall_v rejoice_v find_v in_o himself_o any_o measure_n of_o true_a faith_n therefore_o the_o apostle_n will_v we_o always_o to_o rejoice_v in_o the_o lord_n as_o be_v never_o destitute_a of_o that_o faith_n which_o lay_v hold_v upon_o like_a four_o mark_v the_o occasion_n of_o paul_n thanksgiving_n for_o these_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o philemon_z we_o can_v rejoice_v and_o give_v thanks_n for_o those_o blessing_n we_o know_v not_o paul_n therefore_o must_v needs_o have_v knowledge_n of_o philemon_n faith_n and_o love_n but_o how_o come_v he_o to_o that_o by_o the_o report_n and_o relation_n of_o faithful_a witness_n hear_v of_o thy_o faith_n and_o love_n here_o many_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v note_v first_o see_v in_o paul_n example_n what_o be_v the_o effect_n that_o doct._n 1_o the_o good_a report_n which_o the_o godly_a hear_v of_o their_o brethren_n use_v to_o work_v in_o their_o mind_n common_o man_n suck_v in_o their_o own_o praise_n with_o very_o greedy_a and_o thirsty_a ear_n but_o they_o can_v with_o patience_n endure_v the_o praise_n of_o other_o think_v that_o the_o praise_n of_o other_o be_v a_o close_a kind_n of_o dispraise_v themselves_o and_o that_o so_o much_o be_v take_v from_o they_o as_o be_v give_v unto_o another_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o speech_n of_o those_o that_o be_v much_o in_o the_o commendation_n of_o other_o be_v so_o tedious_a &_o troublesome_a to_o we_o in_o that_o thereby_o we_o feel_v ourselves_o stir_v up_o to_o wrath_n fret_a envy_n and_o such_o like_a distemper_n of_o corrupt_a affection_n but_o it_o be_v far_o joy_n the_o godly_a hear_v the_o good_a report_n of_o their_o brethren_n with_o joy_n otherwise_o with_o the_o child_n of_o god_n who_o have_v the_o circumcise_a ear_n of_o paul_n that_o not_o only_o with_o patience_n but_o with_o great_a of_o the_o lord_n as_o those_o jew_n do_v gal._n 1._o 22_o 23._o away_o then_o with_o that_o uncircumcised_a ear_n of_o envy_n that_o be_v offend_v with_o another_o man_n praise_n as_o a_o unpleasing_a and_o distasteful_a object_n christ_n call_v envy_n by_o the_o name_n of_o a_o evil_a eye_n sure_o we_o may_v as_o well_o give_v it_o the_o name_n of_o a_o evil_a ear_n which_o be_v no_o less_o unwilling_a to_o hear_v than_o the_o eye_n to_o see_v the_o good_a of_o our_o brother_n second_o observe_v that_o thanks_n be_v due_a to_o god_n doct._n 2_o not_o only_o for_o those_o benefit_n which_o he_o bestow_v on_o other_o thanks_o must_v be_v give_v for_o other_o we_o ourselves_o but_o on_o our_o brethren_n also_o and_o therefore_o if_o we_o pay_v he_o not_o this_o debt_n he_o may_v of_o the_o sea_n as_o they_o pass_v do_v light_o touch_v the_o earth_n but_o they_o stay_v not_o there_o but_o go_v on_o forward_o till_o at_o last_o they_o return_v again_o into_o that_o sea_n from_o whence_o they_o first_o come_v so_o it_o be_v here_o our_o love_n must_v first_o come_v from_o god_n to_o the_o creature_n but_o be_v so_o come_v it_o must_v not_o rest_v and_o settle_v there_o howsoever_o like_o a_o river_n it_o may_v in_o passage_n touch_v it_o no_o it_o must_v return_v back_o into_o that_o infinite_a sea_n even_o god_n himself_o whence_o first_o it_o come_v but_o how_o many_o shall_v we_o see_v so_o blind_v and_o bewitch_v with_o the_o love_n of_o the_o creature_n that_o god_n be_v whole_o forget_v of_o they_o thus_o be_v god_n rob_v of_o his_o honour_n with_o the_o and_o adulteress_n know_v you_o not_o that_o the_o love_n of_o the_o world_n be_v enmity_n with_o god_n let_v we_o take_v heed_n of_o be_v enamour_v with_o any_o creature_n though_o never_o so_o
