high_a account_n for_o the_o message_n they_o bring_v and_o to_o be_v subject_a to_o the_o holy_a doctrine_n which_o they_o teach_v even_o that_o be_v a_o strong_a cord_n to_o draw_v the_o inferior_a sort_n to_o show_v reverence_n to_o the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n and_o to_o cause_v they_o to_o think_v that_o if_o such_o great_a person_n so_o high_o esteem_v of_o their_o ministry_n and_o message_n that_o there_o be_v doubtless_o some_o great_a matter_n that_o move_v they_o to_o it_o and_o though_o that_o be_v not_o all_o neither_o be_v of_o any_o power_n to_o convert_v the_o heart_n for_o that_o be_v the_o proper_a work_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n yet_o many_o be_v at_o the_o first_o bring_v on_o to_o receive_v the_o preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n who_o after_o feel_v the_o power_n of_o it_o also_o and_o enjoy_v the_o benefit_n of_o it_o when_o yet_o their_o first_o beginning_n therein_o be_v chief_o occasion_v by_o the_o zeal_n and_o forwardness_n of_o such_o good_a pattern_n and_o this_o be_v one_o cause_n right_a honourable_a why_o we_o god_n minister_n do_v much_o wish_v and_o pray_v for_o the_o superior_n and_o great_a person_n and_o especial_o those_o who_o be_v noble_a before_o and_o say_v man_n and_o brethren_n what_o shall_v we_o do_v as_o if_o they_o shall_v have_v say_v in_o this_o our_o distress_n and_o despair_v in_o ourselves_o what_o help_n can_v you_o prosperity_n peace_n and_o welfare_n in_o riches_n honour_n and_o such_o like_a simple_o but_o conditional_o so_o far_o as_o they_o be_v good_a for_o god_n child_n whereof_o the_o godly_a for_o the_o most_o part_n be_v void_a and_o this_o hungry_a scramble_a world_n will_v keep_v they_o far_o enough_o off_o from_o they_o and_o yet_o this_o be_v no_o cause_n of_o grief_n to_o they_o neither_o god_n provide_v better_a for_o they_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v less_o wed_v to_o this_o world_n but_o god_n principal_o mean_v hereby_o that_o he_o will_v make_v their_o life_n please_v and_o towards_o we_o yea_o and_o that_o in_o thing_n of_o the_o best_a kind_n which_o other_o have_v offer_v they_o of_o god_n as_o well_o as_o we_o do_v set_v no_o store_n by_o they_o and_o all_o because_o they_o feel_v no_o want_n of_o they_o but_o can_v as_o they_o think_v be_v well_o enough_o without_o they_o and_o thus_o much_o of_o the_o cause_n of_o thirst_v thirst_v the_o three_o follow_v and_o that_o be_v how_o long_o we_o shall_v thirst_v for_o it_o seem_v unreasonable_a to_o many_o that_o we_o shall_v be_v hold_v always_o at_o one_o point_n as_o that_o either_o we_o shall_v ever_o be_v thirst_v for_o one_o grace_n or_o if_o that_o be_v not_o require_v of_o we_o yet_o that_o we_o shall_v be_v thirst_v still_o after_o some_o other_o to_o the_o which_o the_o answer_n be_v that_o we_o must_v always_o be_v thirst_v even_o so_o long_o as_o god_n have_v any_o good_a grace_n to_o give_v and_o till_o he_o be_v weary_a of_o bestow_v upon_o us._n which_o see_v it_o shall_v never_o be_v while_o we_o remain_v here_o god_n be_v a_o wellspring_n and_o fountain_n of_o all_o good_a thing_n never_o draw_v dry_a and_o more_o ready_a to_o give_v than_o we_o to_o ask_v it_o be_v for_o our_o singular_a benefit_n and_o not_o a_o bondage_n that_o we_o may_v be_v always_o thirst_v for_o so_o long_o there_o be_v still_o some_o good_a come_n towards_o we_o and_o otherwise_o we_o be_v not_o liable_a to_o the_o liberal_a offer_n which_o god_n make_v here_o by_o the_o prophet_n neither_o be_v we_o the_o person_n to_o who_o he_o speak_v in_o say_v ho_o every_o one_o that_o thirst_v come_v to_o the_o water_n and_o drink_n but_o yet_o this_o i_o say_v further_o that_o in_o this_o manner_n we_o shall_v thirst_v namely_o for_o any_o grace_n till_o we_o receive_v it_o if_o it_o be_v here_o to_o be_v enjoy_v or_o a_o sure_a grant_n of_o it_o if_o we_o can_v partake_v it_o here_o that_o in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v we_o shall_v have_v it_o and_o we_o be_v not_o to_o think_v that_o when_o we_o have_v obtain_v any_o gift_n or_o grace_n of_o god_n that_o we_o be_v command_v still_o to_o be_v ask_v of_o one_o and_o the_o same_o thing_n which_o to_o do_v be_v against_o common_a sense_n and_o reason_n but_o for_o a_o great_a measure_n of_o it_o as_o increase_v of_o faith_n love_n and_o patience_n when_o we_o have_v already_o receive_v a_o part_n in_o they_o and_o for_o such_o thing_n as_o we_o yet_o want_v with_o the_o like_a appetite_n to_o desire_n and_o thirst_n for_o they_o as_o at_o the_o first_o anguish_n of_o mind_n and_o wound_n of_o conscience_n we_o do_v long_o for_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o this_o of_o the_o time_n how_o long_o we_o ought_v to_o thirst_n which_o be_v the_o three_o point_n in_o this_o first_o part_n the_o four_o follow_v namely_o how_o we_o shall_v come_v to_o thirst_v and_o how_o it_o shall_v be_v uphold_v thirst_n which_o be_v such_o a_o worthy_a gift_n of_o god_n have_v not_o need_v to_o be_v neglect_v but_o as_o a_o appetite_n to_o bodily_a food_n for_o the_o preserve_n of_o health_n be_v by_o all_o mean_n to_o be_v maintain_v and_o seek_v the_o mean_n be_v neither_o costly_a nor_o hard_a to_o come_v by_o as_o in_o bodily_a dainty_n it_o fare_v but_o ready_a and_o at_o hand_n even_o to_o see_v our_o want_n in_o grace_n and_o emptiness_n thereof_o as_o how_o weak_a our_o faith_n be_v how_o faint_a our_o hope_n how_o cold_a our_o love_n and_o how_o hardly_o we_o have_v proof_n of_o our_o patience_n also_o to_o observe_v our_o corruption_n as_o touchinesse_n forwardness_n unclean_a desire_n wrath_n desire_v of_o revenge_n etc._n etc._n and_o in_o what_o bondage_n they_o hold_v us._n if_o we_o observe_v these_o in_o ourselves_o 2.2_o they_o will_v make_v we_o desire_v the_o sincere_a milk_n of_o the_o word_n to_o guide_v we_o aright_o also_o to_o watch_v and_o pray_v sigh_n and_o groan_n that_o we_o may_v resist_v the_o evil_a and_o nourish_v the_o good_a for_o as_o the_o husbandman_n by_o toil_v and_o sweat_v at_o hay_n and_o harvest_n provoke_v the_o bodily_a thirst_n so_o we_o labour_v with_o our_o heart_n to_o pluck_v up_o and_o to_o plant_v as_o there_o shall_v be_v cause_n shall_v thirst_v till_o we_o obtain_v that_o which_o we_o go_v about_o and_o desire_v and_o god_n who_o call_v we_o to_o it_o and_o promise_v large_o to_o satisfy_v we_o will_v not_o mock_v we_o but_o do_v as_o he_o have_v say_v that_o be_v to_o say_v satisfy_v our_o soul_n with_o good_a thing_n and_o thus_o we_o come_v to_o thirst_v but_o when_o we_o see_v our_o heart_n thus_o possess_v and_o take_v up_o with_o the_o fervent_a and_o constant_a desire_n of_o the_o good_a thing_n which_o we_o will_v have_v we_o must_v also_o be_v persuade_v to_o labour_v ready_o and_o willing_o as_o need_n shall_v require_v whether_o it_o be_v by_o prayer_n conference_n or_o the_o like_a to_o obtain_v they_o remember_v that_o which_o be_v say_v in_o the_o psalm_n 111.2_o that_o wisdom_n and_o so_o all_o the_o part_n thereof_o be_v to_o be_v seek_v out_o that_o be_v with_o all_o diligence_n of_o those_o that_o have_v pleasure_n therein_o but_o one_o objection_n here_o i_o will_v answer_v which_o trouble_v some_o and_o that_o be_v that_o they_o say_v in_o the_o beginning_n when_o man_n turn_v to_o god_n first_o they_o thirst_v and_o can_v be_v satisfy_v to_o their_o quiet_a and_o contentment_n but_o they_o see_v no_o such_o thing_n in_o they_o after_o i_o answer_v though_o all_o show_v it_o not_o after_o as_o they_o do_v at_o first_o by_o complain_v ask_v question_n and_o lament_v their_o want_n to_o other_o yet_o they_o long_v and_o thirst_v for_o that_o which_o they_o see_v needful_a for_o they_o and_o yet_o want_v but_o they_o do_v not_o show_v it_o so_o much_o and_o that_o be_v wisdom_n which_o other_o unexperienced_a and_o more_o weak_a in_o knowledge_n and_o faith_n can_v do_v but_o must_v show_v their_o thirst_a as_o i_o say_v and_o it_o may_v be_v perceive_v of_o themselves_o to_o be_v so_o by_o their_o daily_a care_n and_o diligence_n to_o nourish_v the_o old_a grace_n they_o have_v already_o and_o to_o obtain_v new_a and_o by_o the_o course_n of_o their_o life_n it_o may_v be_v perceive_v of_o other_o but_o if_o they_o grow_v full_a they_o be_v in_o ill_a case_n thus_o the_o first_o branch_n of_o the_o three_o in_o this_o first_o part_n have_v be_v handle_v namely_o who_o they_o be_v who_o god_n call_v out_o by_o the_o prophet_n from_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o people_n to_o take_v part_n in_o the_o best_a tiding_n that_o ever_o be_v or_o can_v be_v bring_v from_o he_o and_o that_o be_v thirst_n all_o such_o as_o thirst_v the_o second_o branch_n follow_v and_o that_o be_v what_o be_v the_o good_a thing_n that_o they_o shall_v have_v which_o thirst_n the_o benefit_n which_o they_o shall_v enjoy_v be_v answerable_a to_o their_o thirst_n
be_v in_o love_n with_o their_o example_n and_o good_a course_n even_o as_o a_o sweet_a smell_n or_o a_o beautiful_a creature_n provoke_v to_o the_o like_n thereof_o and_o that_o which_o he_o speak_v of_o they_o he_o affirm_v of_o all_o which_o be_v his_o true_a israelite_n and_o faithful_a people_n and_o hereof_o it_o be_v that_o they_o enjoy_v and_o attain_v to_o many_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n because_o they_o love_v and_o long_a much_o after_o they_o and_o every_o one_o have_v the_o great_a measure_n of_o they_o the_o more_o steadfast_o that_o he_o believe_v god_n will_v grant_v they_o and_o so_o on_o the_o contrary_a it_o be_v verify_v in_o other_o which_o be_v write_v 6.28_o woe_n be_v to_o they_o which_o be_v full_a for_o they_o shall_v hunger_n woe_n be_v to_o they_o that_o be_v rich_a for_o they_o have_v their_o consolation_n for_o they_o who_o thirst_v not_o for_o heavenly_a grace_n to_o refresh_v they_o and_o make_v they_o well_o like_v to_o god_n and_o his_o people_n shall_v turn_v their_o thirst_n after_o the_o pleasure_n of_o sin_n and_o the_o unsavourie_a froth_n of_o their_o evil_a heart_n till_o have_v their_o fill_n of_o they_o they_o cast_v up_o their_o sweet_a morsel_n as_o their_o bane_n and_o poison_n and_o this_o shall_v suffice_v to_o have_v say_v of_o this_o verse_n for_o our_o instruction_n and_o comfort_n the_o sum_n whereof_o be_v not_o only_o that_o they_o who_o hearty_o long_a for_o the_o great_a benefit_n of_o assurance_n of_o god_n love_n shall_v have_v it_o believe_v it_o because_o god_n have_v promise_v it_o to_o they_o but_o even_o other_o grace_n also_o as_o willingness_n and_o fitness_n for_o the_o duty_n of_o their_o particular_a call_n as_o solomon_n in_o the_o three_o of_o the_o king_n and_o the_o publican_n and_o soldier_n in_o the_o three_o of_o luke_n obtain_v which_o be_v a_o singular_a gift_n of_o god_n with_o the_o former_a also_o they_o shall_v have_v patience_n yea_o and_o joy_n in_o tribulation_n mercifulnes_n and_o liberality_n to_o the_o needy_a contempt_n of_o the_o world_n willingness_n and_o readiness_n to_o die_v and_o a_o supply_n of_o all_o other_o want_v which_o all_o be_v enjoy_v as_o they_o may_v be_v here_o be_v another_o manner_n of_o portion_n than_o all_o abundance_n of_o corn_n wine_n or_o any_o other_o thing_n that_o be_v earthly_a and_o yet_o they_o shall_v to_o their_o good_a contentment_n have_v their_o part_n in_o these_o also_o 2._o now_o follow_v the_o reprehension_n in_o the_o second_o verse_n but_o here_o we_o must_v mark_v exhortation_n that_o he_o reprove_v not_o they_o who_o he_o before_o call_v in_o their_o thirst_v after_o heavenly_a thing_n to_o be_v satisfy_v therewith_o for_o all_o may_v see_v there_o be_v no_o cause_n why_o he_o shall_v find_v fault_n with_o they_o who_o do_v that_o which_o he_o require_v but_o he_o reprove_v they_o who_o do_v not_o thirst_v nor_o set_v their_o delight_n on_o the_o best_a thing_n tell_v they_o that_o they_o bestow_v their_o labour_n and_o travel_v upon_o that_o which_o can_v not_o profit_v but_o deceive_v they_o for_o by_o money_n in_o this_o verse_n he_o mean_v their_o precious_a labour_n and_o care_n and_o by_o bread_n he_o mean_v that_o which_o in_o the_o first_o verse_n he_o do_v by_o wine_n water_n and_o milk_n that_o be_v the_o substantial_a and_o true_a nourish_a food_n of_o the_o soul_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v why_o be_v you_o so_o unthankful_a nay_o so_o wilful_o foolish_a that_o when_o god_n have_v free_o offer_v his_o bountiful_a kindness_n to_o you_o to_o drink_v of_o the_o water_n of_o life_n you_o affect_v it_o not_o but_o rather_o reject_v it_o and_o in_o the_o mean_a while_n weary_a and_o trouble_v yourselves_o about_o that_o which_o can_v satisfy_v or_o give_v you_o contentment_n for_o to_o speak_v as_o the_o truth_n be_v man_n be_v so_o bewitch_v by_o the_o devil_n that_o they_o have_v rather_o wander_v up_o and_o down_o in_o byway_n and_o cross_a path_n erroneous_o and_o to_o follow_v their_o own_o opinion_n in_o seek_v eternal_a life_n till_o they_o be_v weary_v rather_o then_o to_o rest_v in_o the_o safe_a way_n which_o god_n offer_v they_o and_o when_o he_o have_v reprove_v they_o for_o this_o great_a fault_n he_o exhort_v they_o to_o be_v wise_a and_o to_o hear_v he_o attentive_o in_o show_v they_o a_o better_a way_n even_o the_o right_n and_o true_a way_n to_o happiness_n that_o be_v by_o thirst_v after_o it_o as_o the_o other_o do_v mention_v in_o the_o former_a verse_n and_o so_o do_v he_o show_v they_o what_o a_o worthy_a fruit_n they_o shall_v reap_v thereof_o even_o all_o abundance_n of_o thing_n worthy_a to_o be_v desire_v and_o rest_n to_o their_o soul_n thereby_o which_o he_o mean_v by_o that_o allegorical_a speech_n when_o he_o say_v eat_v that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o let_v your_o soul_n delight_n in_o fatness_n thus_o much_o for_o the_o meaning_n of_o this_o verse_n now_o brief_o look_v we_o into_o the_o reproof_n and_o exhortation_n therein_o contain_v and_o consequent_o what_o fruit_n will_v follow_v if_o they_o be_v both_o regard_v reproof_n in_o the_o reproof_n we_o be_v teach_v as_o well_o as_o they_o to_o who_o the_o prophet_n write_v and_o the_o woeful_a experience_n of_o this_o age_n do_v show_v that_o he_o do_v not_o only_o expostulate_v with_o his_o own_o nation_n at_o that_o time_n but_o that_o he_o have_v also_o just_o inveigh_v against_o all_o adam_n posterity_n in_o what_o age_n soever_o for_o all_o man_n natural_o be_v carry_v away_o with_o this_o frenzy_n that_o in_o seek_v of_o eternal_a life_n they_o do_v all_o err_v and_o be_v deceive_v and_o do_v choose_v rather_o to_o follow_v their_o own_o fancy_n and_o conceit_n than_o the_o voice_n or_o word_n of_o god_n he_o speak_v not_o to_o they_o who_o be_v drown_v in_o a_o deep_a forgetfulness_n of_o god_n and_o themselves_o do_v not_o almost_o think_v of_o the_o welfare_n and_o salvation_n of_o their_o soul_n he_o complain_v not_o i_o say_v of_o such_o who_o number_n yet_o who_o doubt_v but_o that_o it_o be_v exceed_o great_a yea_o and_o that_o all_o such_o be_v further_o off_o from_o eternal_a life_n than_o the_o other_o but_o to_o they_o he_o direct_v his_o word_n who_o desire_v life_n in_o some_o sort_n and_o yet_o know_v no_o way_n thereto_o but_o wander_v uncertain_o they_o know_v not_o whither_o so_o that_o here_o be_v all_o such_o condemn_v as_o seek_v amiss_o and_o toil_n themselves_o to_o come_v to_o happiness_n any_o other_o way_n than_o god_n teach_v in_o his_o word_n and_o all_o their_o labour_n and_o travel_v that_o way_n be_v call_v of_o he_o unprofitable_a and_o ill_o bestow_v cost_n whereupon_o we_o may_v just_o complain_v of_o the_o woeful_a estate_n of_o sundry_a kind_n of_o people_n among_o we_o and_o lay_v forth_o their_o misery_n as_o clear_o as_o if_o it_o be_v see_v in_o a_o glass_n and_o first_o of_o all_o here_o they_o who_o be_v teacher_n or_o be_v teach_v in_o the_o romish_a synagogue_n may_v manifest_o see_v how_o they_o incur_v the_o bitter_a and_o just_a reproof_n of_o the_o prophet_n in_o such_o sort_n as_o they_o shall_v never_o be_v able_a to_o wind_v themselves_o out_o of_o it_o for_o to_o yield_v they_o that_o which_o true_o we_o may_v we_o deny_v not_o but_o that_o there_o be_v of_o they_o which_o toil_n and_o travel_n to_o go_v to_o heaven_n though_o this_o must_v be_v know_v also_o that_o other_o of_o they_o cover_v their_o knavery_n with_o a_o colour_n of_o their_o religion_n and_o either_o know_v that_o they_o be_v mislead_v or_o at_o least_o hold_v their_o profession_n for_o their_o ease_n and_o belly_n sake_n even_o these_o who_o seek_v the_o way_n to_o heaven_n which_o be_v the_o simple_a mind_v among_o all_o the_o rest_n of_o their_o religion_n be_v they_o against_o who_o the_o prophet_n enueigh_v as_o for_o the_o wilful_a and_o subtle_a among_o they_o they_o be_v much_o further_o off_o and_o almost_o without_o hope_n but_o the_o simple_a be_v also_o deceive_v with_o a_o false_a worship_n of_o god_n and_o use_v it_o after_o the_o fond_a and_o superstitious_a conceit_n and_o dream_n of_o their_o own_o brain_n though_o only_o of_o mere_a ignorance_n of_o who_o do_n yet_o the_o lord_n more_o just_o complain_v than_o he_o do_v of_o those_o to_o who_o these_o word_n be_v direct_v when_o he_o say_v 1.12_o who_o require_v these_o thing_n at_o your_o hand_n 15.9_o for_o in_o vain_a do_v they_o worship_v he_o teach_v and_o receive_v for_o doctrine_n the_o tradition_n of_o man_n to_o enter_v into_o particular_n be_v infinite_a object_n and_o whereas_o it_o will_v be_v object_v that_o they_o take_v great_a pain_n and_o bestow_v much_o time_n about_o the_o same_o answ_n i_o answer_v the_o rightly_a do_v the_o
they_o use_v all_o diligence_n and_o arm_v themselves_o now_o while_o god_n give_v they_o this_o little_a breathe_n from_o persecution_n that_o so_o by_o their_o confidence_n pure_a heart_n good_a conscience_n love_n and_o patience_n and_o other_o grace_n they_o may_v be_v fit_a to_o lead_v a_o godly_a life_n in_o the_o world_n with_o ease_n and_o strengthen_v themselves_o against_o fall_n and_o the_o bait_n of_o sin_n on_o every_o side_n and_o it_o be_v manifest_a to_o all_o of_o we_o who_o can_v judge_v that_o by_o such_o mean_n and_o a_o sound_a ministry_n watch_v pray_v and_o the_o like_a the_o church_n of_o god_n can_v grow_v in_o grace_n and_o no_o otherwise_o and_o that_o they_o do_v thus_o it_o be_v apparent_a by_o that_o which_o we_o read_v in_o the_o second_o of_o the_o act_n 43._o where_o it_o be_v say_v that_o they_o be_v daily_o in_o the_o temple_n and_o continue_v in_o the_o apostle_n doctrine_n and_o fellowship_n and_o in_o break_v of_o bread_n and_o prayer_n and_o this_o use_n shall_v all_o true_a particular_a church_n and_o people_n of_o god_n make_v of_o their_o liberty_n of_o peace_n and_o of_o live_v free_a from_o persecution_n from_o the_o which_o god_n have_v a_o long_a time_n free_v many_o of_o his_o good_a servant_n in_o this_o age_n howsoever_o some_o be_v much_o and_o oft_o under_o the_o cross_n yea_o and_o that_o right_a heavy_a and_o according_a to_o the_o diverse_a age_n of_o god_n child_n they_o shall_v exercise_v themselves_o that_o be_v to_o say_v the_o tender_a conscience_n and_o young_a beginner_n shall_v have_v their_o thought_n and_o meditation_n about_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n desire_v above_o all_o thing_n to_o be_v assure_v of_o it_o the_o middle_a age_a christian_n and_o such_o as_o be_v somewhat_o stay_v in_o faith_n and_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n shall_v chief_o be_v occupy_v in_o strive_v against_o their_o lust_n and_o fight_v with_o they_o the_o ancient_a and_o experience_a who_o have_v do_v both_o walk_v fruitful_o and_o circumspect_o still_o as_o they_o do_v long_o before_o and_o not_o to_o be_v lead_v away_o from_o their_o steadfastness_n in_o their_o christian_a course_n 3.17_o by_o the_o error_n of_o the_o wicked_a as_o have_v find_v that_o course_n by_o long_a proof_n to_o have_v be_v the_o most_o gainful_a of_o all_o other_o unto_o they_o these_o use_n and_o the_o like_a all_o sort_n and_o age_n of_o god_n people_n aught_o to_o make_v of_o god_n blessing_n towards_o they_o and_o of_o freedom_n from_o trouble_n after_o but_o do_v the_o people_n of_o this_o age_n thus_o for_o
