hannibal_n present_o begin_v to_o be_v dishearten_v when_o he_o see_v that_o the_o senate_n and_o people_n of_o rome_n have_v so_o great_a resolution_n even_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o their_o as_o they_o say_v with_o might_n and_o main_a if_o ever_o we_o think_v of_o support_v the_o cause_n and_o maintain_v the_o interest_n of_o virtue_n and_o honesty_n for_o if_o what_o author_n what_o a_o athenian_a scholar_n and_o most_o intimate_a friend_n to_o epicurus_n often_o mention_v by_o our_o author_n metrodorus_n have_v write_v pass_n for_o truth_n that_o whatever_o can_v true_o be_v call_v our_o profit_n nay_o and_o all_o the_o welfare_n and_o happiness_n of_o life_n consist_v in_o a_o firm_a constitution_n of_o body_n and_o a_o well-grounded_n hope_v of_o its_o last_a continuance_n it_o be_v certain_a this_o profit_n nay_o this_o sovereign_a profit_n for_o such_o they_o account_v it_o must_v sometime_o be_v set_v in_o opposition_n to_o honesty_n prudence_n honesty_n he_o proceed_v to_o show_v that_o this_o opinion_n ruin_v all_o the_o virtue_n as_o first_o prudence_n for_o what_o in_o the_o first_o place_n will_v be_v the_o office_n of_o prudence_n only_o to_o cater_n and_o look_v about_o for_o pleafure_n how_o miserable_a a_o case_n be_v that_o virtue_n in_o which_o be_v thus_o make_v a_o servant_n and_o pander_n to_o pleasure_n but_o what_o shall_v be_v her_o business_n in_o this_o office_n to_o taste_v and_o distinguish_v ingenious_o betwixt_o pleasure_n suppose_v this_o to_o be_v a_o pleasant_a business_n it_o be_v certain_o the_o most_o scandalous_a one_o that_o can_v ever_o have_v be_v think_v on_o again_o can_v he_o that_o make_v pain_n be_v the_o great_a evil_n have_v ever_o such_o a_o virtue_n as_o fortitude_n in_o he_o the_o very_a nature_n of_o which_o consist_v whole_o in_o despise_v of_o pain_n and_o difficulty_n i_o know_v epicurus_n upon_o several_a occasion_n and_o this_o in_o particular_a speak_v very_o courageous_o as_o to_o the_o matter_n of_o pain_n but_o we_o must_v not_o consider_v so_o much_o what_o be_v say_v as_o what_o ought_v to_o be_v say_v by_o a_o man_n of_o his_o principle_n who_o make_v pleasure_n and_o pain_n to_o be_v the_o ultimate_a bound_n of_o man_n happiness_n and_o misery_n so_o again_o if_o you_o will_v hear_v he_o about_o continence_n and_o temperance_n he_o tell_v you_o abundance_n of_o extraordinary_a thing_n in_o a_o great_a many_o place_n but_o he_o be_v gravel_a as_o we_o speak_v and_o can_v never_o be_v able_a to_o acquit_v himself_o handsome_o for_o with_o what_o face_n of_o reason_n can_v he_o commend_v temperance_n who_o place_v his_o happiness_n in_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o pleasure_n good_n pleasure_n that_o be_v pleasure_n epicurus_n happiness_n consist_v in_o indulge_v the_o sensual_a appetite_n but_o temperance_n consist_v in_o oppose_v this_o appetite_n therefore_o temperance_n and_o pleasure_n can_v never_o agree_v and_o consequent_o epicurus_n be_v inconsistent_a with_o himself_o when_o he_o commend_v temperance_n and_o yet_o make_v pleasure_n his_o sovereign_a good_n when_o the_o sensual_a appetite_n follow_v after_o pleasure_n and_o it_o be_v the_o business_n of_o temperance_n to_o correct_v that_o appetite_n they_o appetite_n have_v prove_v that_o this_o opinion_n ruin_v all_o the_o virtue_n he_o proceed_v to_o show_v how_o these_o endeavour_n to_o bring_v themselves_o off_o in_o each_o of_o they_o but_o still_o they_o endeavour_v
