judge_v of_o to_o who_o it_o belong_v yet_o if_o it_o may_v be_v lawful_a for_o we_o to_o judge_v of_o a_o matter_n of_o this_o nature_n from_o the_o principle_n of_o reason_n it_o seem_v to_o we_o that_o the_o above_o mention_v ordinance_n about_o church_n government_n as_o well_o as_o other_o ordinance_n of_o parliament_n be_v confirm_v in_o the_o humble_a advice_n assent_v unto_o by_o his_o highness_n in_o the_o 16._o section_n thereof_o where_o we_o find_v these_o word_n and_o that_o nothing_o contain_v in_o this_o petition_n and_o advice_n nor_o your_o highness_n consent_n rhereunto_o shall_v be_v construe_v to_o extend_v to_o the_o repeal_n or_o make_v void_a of_o any_o act_n or_o ordinance_n which_o be_v not_o contrary_a hereunto_o or_o to_o the_o matter_n herein_o contain_v but_o that_o the_o say_v act_n and_o ordinance_n not_o contrary_a hereunto_o shall_v continue_v and_o remain_v in_o force_n in_o such_o manner_n as_o if_o this_o present_a petition_n and_o advice_n by_o this_o humble_a advice_n repeal_v and_o make_v void_a for_o it_o do_v not_o appear_v to_o we_o that_o there_o be_v any_o thing_n in_o the_o form_n of_o church_n government_n or_o any_o other_o ordinance_n of_o parliament_n about_o that_o matter_n that_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o humble_a advice_n or_o matter_n therein_o contain_v and_o whereas_o in_o the_o eleven_o section_n there_o be_v mention_v make_v of_o some_o that_o differ_v in_o worship_n and_o discipline_n from_o the_o public_a profession_n of_o these_o nation_n hold_v forth_o to_o who_o some_o indulgence_n be_v grant_v it_o seem_v to_o we_o there_o be_v a_o acknowledgement_n and_o own_n of_o what_o the_o late_a parliament_n hold_v forth_o in_o regard_n of_o these_o by_o the_o directory_n for_o worship_n and_o form_n of_o church_n government_n which_o they_o pass_v as_o the_o public_a profession_n of_o these_o nation_n in_o regard_n of_o worship_n and_o discipline_n and_o in_o these_o apprehension_n we_o be_v the_o more_o confirm_v because_o here_o in_o this_o section_n mention_n be_v make_v of_o a_o confession_n of_o faith_n to_o be_v agree_v on_o by_o his_o highness_n and_o the_o parliament_n there_o have_v nothing_o in_o that_o kind_n pass_v the_o late_a parliament_n that_o establish_v the_o directory_n for_o worship_n and_o form_n of_o church_n government_n however_o there_o have_v be_v a_o confession_n of_o faith_n draw_v up_o by_o the_o late_a assembly_n of_o divine_n whence_o it_o seem_v to_o we_o clear_a that_o they_o own_o the_o directory_n for_o worship_n and_o the_o form_n of_o church_n government_n to_o be_v that_o which_o they_o hold_v forth_o as_o the_o public_a profession_n of_o the_o nation_n for_o worship_n and_o government_n to_o the_o same_o purpose_n we_o find_v in_o the_o government_n of_o the_o commonwealth_n of_o england_n scotland_n and_o ireland_n etc._n etc._n as_o it_o be_v public_o declare_v at_o westminster_n decemb._n 16_o 1653._o pag._n 43._o sect._n 37._o where_o also_o they_o express_v a_o worship_n and_o discipline_n public_o hold_v forth_o which_o must_v needs_o refer_v to_o the_o directory_n and_o form_n of_o church_n government_n by_o we_o recite_v there_o be_v no_o other_o worship_n or_o discipline_n that_o then_o have_v or_o now_o have_v the_o civil_a sanction_n in_o this_o nation_n we_o have_v be_v large_a in_o what_o we_o have_v here_o represent_v in_o the_o general_n before_o we_o come_v to_o speak_v more_o particular_o to_o the_o rest_n that_o now_o follow_v in_o your_o paper_n but_o our_o pain_n be_v the_o great_a to_o make_v this_o full_a representation_n unto_o you_o than_o it_o will_v be_v for_o you_o to_o read_v it_o we_o must_v entreat_v you_o to_o excuse_v we_o consider_v it_o tend_v as_o well_o to_o rectify_v your_o mistake_n as_o to_o vindicate_v ourselves_o be_v also_o desirous_a not_o to_o be_v mistake_v any_o more_o as_o also_o because_o it_o lay_v a_o foundation_n for_o our_o brief_a and_o more_o particular_a answer_n unto_o what_o follow_v and_o to_o which_o these_o â—hings_n be_v thus_o premise_v we_o now_o come_v sect_n v._o in_o the_o thing_n wherein_o you_o profess_v yourselves_o to_o dissent_v till_o further_o explicate_v and_o unfold_v by_o we_o 1_o the_o first_o thing_n we_o meet_v with_o here_o be_v that_o by_o the_o many_o person_n of_o all_o sort_n that_o be_v member_n of_o congregation_n and_o mention_v in_o our_o paper_n in_o your_o sense_n thereof_o we_o seem_v to_o hint_n that_o thereby_o we_o mean_v only_o such_o who_o have_v admit_v themselves_o member_n of_o some_o congregation_n within_o your_o association_n and_o yet_o live_v inordinate_o etc._n etc._n and_o that_o therefore_o you_o who_o never_o be_v any_o member_n or_o associate_n of_o we_o be_v not_o within_o the_o verge_n and_o compass_n
therefore_o you_o and_o all_o man_n may_v discern_v that_o when_o you_o say_v speak_v of_o the_o humble_a advice_n that_o in_o the_o eleven_o section_n all_o minister_n throughout_o the_o land_n and_o their_o assembly_n profess_v the_o true_a protestant_a religion_n though_o of_o different_a judgement_n in_o worship_n and_o discipline_n be_v all_o of_o they_o equal_o protect_v in_o the_o liberty_n of_o their_o profession_n that_o proposition_n be_v a_o great_a deal_n large_a than_o the_o humble_a advice_n will_v allow_v of_o it_o express_o conclude_v even_o from_o that_o protection_n allow_v to_o some_o other_o the_o way_n of_o prelacy_n though_o it_o shall_v be_v set_v up_o by_o some_o minister_n and_o other_o of_o the_o protestant_a religion_n and_o therefore_o all_o minister_n and_o their_o assembly_n though_o profess_v the_o protestant_a religion_n can_v equal_o lay_v claim_n to_o the_o protection_n there_o speak_v of_o but_o for_o answer_v to_o all_o that_o you_o here_o urge_v out_o of_o this_o eleven_o section_n of_o the_o humble_a advice_n we_o shall_v say_v two_o thing_n 1._o that_o as_o yourselves_o speak_v only_o of_o protection_n allow_v by_o it_o to_o some_o person_n of_o different_a judgement_n in_o worship_n or_o discipline_n so_o whoever_o will_v peruse_v this_o section_n shall_v not_o find_v that_o it_o say_v one_o word_n touch_v the_o restraint_n of_o the_o exercise_n of_o church-discipline_n towards_o any_o when_o it_o speak_v of_o some_o that_o shall_v differ_v in_o other_o thing_n sc_n that_o have_v be_v mention_v particular_o before_o in_o doctrine_n worship_n or_o discipline_n from_o the_o public_a profession_n hold_v forth_o to_o who_o it_o allow_v protection_n from_o injury_n as_o it_o grant_v they_o a_o freedom_n from_o mulct_n and_o civil_a penalty_n and_o then_o after_o of_o such_o minister_n or_o public_a preacher_n who_o shall_v agree_v with_o the_o public_a profession_n in_o matter_n of_o faith_n although_o in_o their_o judgement_n and_o practice_n they_o differ_v in_o matter_n of_o worship_n and_o discipline_n who_o it_o make_v capable_a be_v otherwise_o due_o qualify_v and_o due_o approve_v of_o some_o special_a grace_n and_o favour_n that_o the_o former_a sort_n be_v not_o capable_a of_o it_o be_v plain_a from_o those_o expression_n that_o it_o own_v a_o public_a discipline_n which_o be_v not_o hold_v forth_o any_o where_o but_o in_o the_o form_n of_o church_n government_n establish_v by_o ordinance_n of_o parliament_n for_o the_o church_n of_o england_n and_o ireland_n aug._n 29._o 1648._o that_o have_v be_v often_o time_n mention_v but_o you_o will_v not_o find_v that_o the_o exercise_n of_o this_o public_a discipline_n hold_v forth_o be_v any_o where_o at_o all_o in_o this_o section_n prohibit_v or_o that_o it_o be_v restrain_v in_o regard_n of_o its_o exercise_n towards_o any_o or_o limit_v only_o in_o that_o respect_n to_o the_o minister_n and_o assembly_n of_o this_o or_o the_o other_o persuasion_n and_o yet_o that_o this_o public_a discipline_n hold_v forth_o as_o aforesaid_a may_v be_v free_a from_o all_o suspicion_n of_o any_o undue_a rigour_n or_o harshness_n towards_o any_o we_o shall_v here_o mention_v one_o rule_n which_o we_o recite_v with_o several_a other_o thing_n in_o our_o answer_n to_o your_o first_o paper_n touch_v the_o order_n prescribe_v in_o the_o form_n of_o church_n government_n of_o proceed_v to_o excommunication_n which_o run_v in_o these_o word_n but_o the_o person_n who_o hold_v other_o error_n in_o judgement_n about_o point_n wherein_o learned_a and_o godly_a man_n possible_o may_v or_o do_v differ_v and_o which_o subvert_v not_o the_o faith_n nor_o be_v destructive_a to_o godliness_n or_o that_o be_v guilty_a of_o such_o sin_n of_o infirmity_n as_o be_v common_o find_v in_o the_o child_n of_o god_n or_o be_v otherwise_o sound_a in_o the_o faith_n and_o holy_a in_o life_n and_o so_o not_o fall_v under_o censure_n by_o the_o former_a rule_n endeavour_v to_o keep_v the_o unity_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o bond_n of_o peace_n and_o do_v yet_o out_o of_o conscience_n not_o come_v up_o to_o the_o observation_n of_o all_o those_o rule_n which_o be_v or_o shall_v be_v establish_v by_o authority_n for_o regulate_v the_o outward_a worship_n of_o god_n and_o government_n of_o his_o church_n the_o sentence_n of_o excommunication_n for_o these_o cause_n shall_v not_o be_v denounce_v against_o they_o by_o this_o one_o rule_v it_o be_v very_o clear_a that_o as_o this_o discipline_n be_v not_o to_o be_v accuse_v of_o undue_a severity_n so_o there_o be_v no_o repugnancy_n between_o the_o humble_a advice_n and_o it_o 2._o that_o which_o in_o the_o second_o place_n we_o have_v to_o say_v be_v that_o admit_v your_o proposition_n be_v full_o as_o large_a in_o the_o humble_a advice_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o person_n to_o who_o you_o will_v have_v liberty_n to_o be_v extend_v as_o you_o have_v lay_v it_o down_o which_o yet_o we_o have_v show_v be_v not_o so_o yet_o how_o inconsequent_o do_v you_o argue_v when_o you_o will_v infer_v a_o exemption_n of_o person_n from_o church_n censure_n authorize_v to_o be_v exercise_v by_o the_o form_n of_o church_n government_n from_o the_o humble_a advice_n because_o it_o afford_v they_o a_o protection_n against_o civil_a injury_n as_o if_o this_o proposition_n be_v most_o certain_o true_a all_o those_o that_o according_a to_o the_o humble_a advice_n be_v to_o be_v protect_v against_o civil_a injury_n be_v thereby_o exempt_v from_o church_n censure_n and_o yet_o this_o must_v be_v prove_v or_o your_o consequence_n be_v never_o prove_v but_o to_o make_v that_o out_o we_o shall_v allow_v you_o time_n and_o in_o the_o mean_a season_n must_v deny_v it_o and_o so_o now_o all_o you_o have_v to_o the_o conclusion_n of_o this_o section_n be_v but_o mere_a varnish_n although_o we_o be_v able_a to_o tell_v you_o as_o we_o have_v tell_v you_o even_o now_o and_o often_o before_o what_o power_n be_v grant_v unto_o we_o who_o act_n by_o a_o unrepealed_a ordinance_n of_o parliament_n and_o yet_o in_o force_n that_o other_o have_v not_o although_o when_o you_o say_v be_v these_o within_o the_o bound_n of_o our_o association_n subject_n to_o our_o government_n unless_o they_o will_v renounce_v their_o baptism_n and_o christianity_n and_o which_o you_o will_v represent_v we_o to_o assert_v in_o that_o recital_n you_o make_v of_o our_o word_n in_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o next_o section_n you_o do_v therein_o manifest_o offer_v violence_n to_o the_o word_n of_o our_o answer_n for_o if_o the_o reader_n peruse_v the_o first_o part_n of_o the_o five_o section_n of_o our_o answer_n he_o may_v there_o find_v that_o we_o declare_v christianity_n and_o their_o baptism_n they_o be_v subject_a to_o our_o government_n as_o you_o will_v have_v it_o to_o be_v but_o that_o they_o can_v not_o be_v judge_v by_o we_o to_o be_v without_o in_o the_o apostle_n sense_n except_o they_o shall_v make_v so_o great_a a_o apostasy_n and_o wherein_o we_o be_v more_o liberal_a and_o charitable_a towards_o you_o than_o you_o be_v towards_o yourselves_o it_o be_v one_o thing_n that_o make_v a_o member_n of_o the_o catholic_n visible_a church_n and_o another_o that_o make_v a_o member_n of_o this_o or_o that_o particular_a church_n as_o it_o be_v also_o true_a that_o

practise_v who_o be_v so_o little_a a_o friend_n to_o peace_n or_o satisfy_v in_o the_o ground_n of_o his_o own_o act_n as_o to_o cast_v needless_a scruple_n before_o they_o it_o be_v time_n enough_o for_o we_o to_o manifest_v what_o we_o can_v condescend_v to_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o manner_n of_o admission_n when_o there_o be_v occasion_n offer_v for_o any_o such_o need_n which_o we_o have_v not_o ordinary_o meet_v with_o in_o those_o that_o have_v since_o tender_v themselves_o to_o the_o ordinance_n there_o be_v enough_o declare_v at_o the_o publication_n of_o the_o paper_n to_o have_v prevent_v any_o such_o construction_n as_o they_o make_v of_o it_o in_o this_o thing_n and_o therefore_o we_o can_v but_o admire_v at_o what_o we_o find_v next_o that_o our_o aim_n shall_v be_v to_o bring_v all_o sort_n to_o subject_n themselves_o to_o minister_n and_o elder_n for_o examination_n and_o that_o all_o person_n must_v come_v under_o the_o inquisition_n not_o so_o much_o to_o fit_v they_o for_o the_o sacrament_n as_o to_o teach_v they_o obedience_n that_o they_o may_v know_v themselves_o to_o be_v homines_fw-la ad_fw-la servitutem_fw-la nati_fw-la etc._n etc._n whenas_o the_o chief_a actor_n in_o the_o print_n of_o these_o paper_n can_v not_o but_o hear_v a_o solemn_a profession_n to_o the_o contrary_a at_o our_o publish_n of_o our_o paper_n as_o aforesaid_a which_o he_o can_v show_v to_o be_v contradict_v by_o any_o after_o practice_n as_o also_o when_o by_o experience_n there_o be_v several_a communicant_n in_o our_o congregation_n that_o have_v scruple_v be_v examine_v before_o the_o elder_n who_o yet_o we_o have_v not_o refuse_v but_o have_v find_v out_o expedient_n for_o their_o admission_n without_o any_o further_a trouble_n to_o they_o in_o the_o thing_n they_o have_v scruple_v the_o eldership_n consent_v that_o two_o minister_n may_v take_v a_o account_n of_o their_o knowledge_n and_o they_o after_o be_v admit_v by_o the_o eldership_n and_o of_o this_o practice_n of_o we_o both_o before_o and_o since_o upon_o occasion_n there_o be_v several_a in_o our_o congregation_n able_a and_o we_o believe_v ready_a to_o testify_v 5._o whether_o our_o paper_n publish_v for_o the_o scope_n or_o matter_n deserve_v to_o be_v call_v brutum_fw-la fulmen_fw-la or_o whether_o their_o answer_n savour_v of_o all_o or_o any_o meekness_n and_o that_o shall_v peruse_v our_o follow_a paper_n and_o that_o they_o wonder_v that_o man_n pretend_v to_o religion_n and_o learning_n etc._n etc._n so_o we_o wonder_v at_o they_o how_o they_o dare_v pretend_v to_o religion_n or_o learning_n and_o call_v they_o mens_fw-la own_o law_n the_o placita_fw-la of_o our_o own_o will_n fancy_n of_o man_n nay_o praevarication_n before_o they_o have_v better_a make_v it_o to_o appear_v that_o they_o be_v such_o that_o matter_n be_v foul_a indeed_o and_o inconsistent_a with_o religion_n and_o learning_n to_o call_v in_o the_o god_n of_o truth_n to_o abett_v our_o own_o fancy_n and_o to_o pretend_v to_o civil_a authority_n to_o second_v our_o own_o prevarication_n but_o we_o may_v return_v to_o the_o laconicke_a 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d if_o to_o this_o if_o it_o be_v so_o but_o that_o be_v the_o great_a question_n but_o the_o prefator_n here_o can_v dispute_v and_o moderate_v too_o and_o very_o ingenuous_o determine_v on_o his_o own_o side_n without_o any_o respect_n at_o all_o to_o our_o argument_n for_o the_o contrary_a egg_n regiae_fw-la scilieet_a artis_fw-la est_fw-la ridere_fw-la quod_fw-la non_fw-la potest_fw-la solvere_fw-la 7._o what_o unguided_a zeal_n or_o interest_n it_o be_v that_o shall_v precipitate_v we_o we_o no_o more_o be_v careful_a to_o clear_v ourselves_o from_o then_o to_o retort_v the_o like_a upon_o they_o in_o their_o opposition_n of_o we_o which_o we_o may_v as_o well_o do_v but_o about_o this_o danger_n of_o a_o praemunire_n we_o can_v think_v they_o cordial_a in_o their_o advice_n and_o caution_n to_o we_o because_o they_o will_v persuade_v we_o to_o return_v to_o canonical_a obedience_n and_o episcopacy_n etc._n etc._n which_o we_o know_v be_v express_o except_v against_o in_o the_o late_a law_n of_o the_o land_n and_o we_o foresee_v it_o to_o be_v a_o praemunire_n to_o meddle_v with_o they_o and_o therefore_o we_o have_v cause_n to_o judge_n that_o they_o will_v fancy_v we_o in_o a_o praemunire_n in_o the_o way_n against_o they_o not_o care_v to_o draw_v we_o into_o a_o real_a praemunire_n in_o a_o way_n with_o they_o 8._o that_o what_o we_o publish_v be_v any_o thing_n against_o the_o law_n it_o will_v speak_v for_o itself_o they_o have_v publish_v it_o to_o the_o view_n of_o the_o world_n and_o if_o without_o their_o comment_n any_o thing_n be_v to_o obey_v upon_o pain_n of_o excommunication_n we_o see_v no_o reason_n for_o any_o such_o construction_n of_o our_o action_n we_o presume_v our_o conclusion_n shall_v not_o have_v be_v style_v
