A77753 A iustification of two points now in controversie with the Anabaptists concerning baptisme: the first is, that infants of Christians ought to be baptized, with grounds to prove it, and their objections answered. With a briefe answer to Master Tombes twelve doubtfull arguments against it in his exercitation about infants baptisme. Also a briefe answer to Captaine Hobsons five arguments in his falacy of infants baptisme, being (as he saith) that which should have beene disputed by him, and Mr. Knowles, and some others; against Mr. Calamy and Mr. Cranford. The second point is, that the sprinckling the baptized more agreeth with the minde of Christ then dipping or plunging in or under the water: with grounds to prove it, and a briefe auswer [sic] to what they have to say against it. / By T.B. Bakewell, Thomas, b. 1618 or 19. 1646 (1646) Wing B534; Thomason E316_23; ESTC R5282 32,062 32

baptism_n of_o reprobate_n may_v benefit_v the_o godly_a although_o it_o do_v not_o benefit_n themselves_o that_o have_v it_o eight_o master_n tomb_n say_v baptism_n of_o infant_n cause_v many_o fault_n in_o discipline_n and_o in_o divine_a worship_n and_o in_o conversation_n such_o as_o these_o first_o private_a baptism_n second_o baptism_n of_o infant_n three_o baptism_n by_o woman_n fourthly_a baptism_n of_o uncertain_a progeny_n five_o baptism_n in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n who_o know_v not_o the_o lord_n nor_o have_v ever_o consent_v and_o perhaps_o will_v never_o consent_v to_o the_o confession_n of_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n sixthly_a it_o have_v bring_v in_o the_o admission_n of_o ignorant_a and_o profane_a to_o the_o communion_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n seventh_o it_o pervert_v the_o order_n of_o discipline_n to_o to_o baptize_v and_o then_o to_o catechise_v eighthly_a it_o turn_v the_o sacrament_n into_o a_o ceremony_n or_o profane_a feast_n ninth_o it_o make_v man_n forget_v that_o ever_o they_o be_v baptize_v tenth_o it_o take_v away_o or_o diminish_v zeal_n and_o industry_n to_o know_v the_o gospel_n i_o answ_v most_o of_o these_o be_v scandal_n without_o any_o proof_n as_o the_o five_o last_o and_o there_o be_v but_o one_o of_o the_o other_o five_o altogether_o unlawful_a and_o that_o be_v baptism_n by_o woman_n and_o yet_o this_o be_v hold_v by_o some_o anabaptist_n to_o be_v lawful_a which_o be_v not_o lawful_a but_o abominable_a and_o he_o make_v a_o perhaps_o to_o the_o five_o where_o there_o be_v no_o cause_n for_o the_o parent_n have_v power_n to_o bring_v they_o up_o to_o profess_v the_o christian_n religion_n which_o be_v as_o much_o as_o the_o apostle_n require_v before_o they_o do_v admit_v they_o to_o baptism_n then_o these_o ten_o fault_n be_v not_o sufficient_a to_o hinder_v christian_n infant_n from_o baptism_n nine_o master_n tomb_n say_v that_o infant_n baptism_n be_v a_o occasion_n of_o many_o unnecessary_a dispute_n foster_a contention_n which_o can_v never_o be_v determine_v by_o any_o certain_a rule_n such_o as_o these_o first_o baptise_v infant_n of_o excommunicate_v person_n second_o baptise_v infant_n of_o apostate_n three_o baptise_v infant_n of_o parent_n that_o be_v not_o member_n of_o a_o gather_a church_n fourthly_a baptise_v infant_n of_o those_o who_o ancestor_n be_v believer_n and_o the_o next_o parent_n remain_v still_o in_o unbelief_n i_o answ_v the_o first_o and_o last_o of_o these_o the_o church_n of_o england_n make_v no_o doubt_n of_o nor_o of_o the_o second_o unless_o they_o turn_v turk_n and_o so_o renounce_v the_o christian_n religion_n and_o the_o three_o be_v a_o mere_a cavil_n of_o independent_o for_o he_o that_o be_v baptize_v into_o the_o christian_n faith_n and_o religion_n be_v a_o member_n of_o the_o christian_n church_n wherever_o he_o be_v then_o notwithstanding_o this_o argument_n christian_n infant_n ought_v to_o be_v baptize_v ten_o master_n tomb_n say_v that_o baptism_n of_o infant_n be_v oppose_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o the_o darkness_n of_o popery_n by_o the_o same_o man_n that_o oppose_a invocation_n of_o saint_n and_o prayer_n for_o the_o dead_a and_o adoration_n of_o the_o cross_n i_o answer_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o that_o darkness_n some_o light_n may_v be_v hide_v from_o those_o that_o seek_v to_o bring_v in_o the_o light_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o we_o need_v not_o to_o fetch_v proof_n from_o those_o dark_a time_n for_o luther_n deny_v some_o part_n of_o scripture_n to_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o he_o hold_v consubstantiation_n ubiquity_n of_o christ_n body_n and_o yet_o he_o withstand_v popery_n more_o powerful_o than_o any_o of_o those_o before_o he_o then_o this_o can_v hinder_v infant_n baptism_n eleven_o master_n tomb_n say_v the_o assertor_n of_o infant_n baptism_n do_v not_o agree_v among_o themselves_o upon_o what_o foundation_n they_o may_v build_v it_o i_o answer_v though_o several_a man_n bring_v several_a argument_n for_o it_o this_o can_v 〈◊〉_d it_o again_o they_o all_o agree_v in_o the_o command_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o promise_n of_o sanctify_a grace_n and_o the_o blessing_n and_o testimony_n of_o christ_n on_o they_o and_o of_o that_o holiness_n of_o distinction_n from_o turk_n and_o infidel_n and_o if_o some_o bring_v more_o argument_n to_o confirm_v it_o shall_v this_o make_v it_o void_a and_o what_o truth_n be_v that_o which_o be_v never_o oppose_v by_o some_o then_o this_o can_v hinder_v infant_n baptism_n last_o master_n tomb_n say_v infant_n baptism_n seem_v to_o take_v away_o one_o of_o the_o prime_a end_n of_o baptism_n which_o be_v to_o show_v and_o confess_v himself_o to_o be_v a_o disciple_n but_o this_o i_o have_v already_o answer_v several_a time_n so_o then_o notwithstanding_o all_o these_o doubtful_a argument_n here_o be_v nothing_o that_o may_v just_o hinder_v christian_n infant_n from_o baptism_n all_o these_o doubt_n be_v brief_o mention_v by_o master_n tomb_n in_o the_o begin_n of_o his_o book_n entitle_v a_o exercitation_n of_o infant_n baptism_n before_o his_o answer_n to_o master_n martial_n therefore_o i_o forbear_v to_o set_v down_o the_o several_a page_n to_o find_v they_o here_o i_o shall_v speak_v something_o touch_v rebaptising_a or_o often_o baptise_v because_o master_n tomb_n in_o his_o great_a book_n seem_v to_o favour_v it_o say_v if_o we_o have_v as_o clear_a scripture_n for_o infant_n baptism_n as_o we_o have_v for_o rebaptising_a our_o controversy_n will_v soon_o be_v end_v and_o by_o other_o such_o like_a passage_n in_o his_o book_n it_o appear_v that_o he_o favour_v rebaptising_a or_o often_o baptism_n then_o suppose_v any_o that_o be_v baptize_v in_o the_o church_n of_o england_n shall_v question_v the_o lawfulness_n of_o their_o baptism_n say_v i_o be_v not_o right_o baptize_v because_o i_o be_v a_o infant_n and_o know_v not_o what_o be_v do_v but_o this_o i_o have_v already_o answer_v then_o suppose_v another_o say_v i_o be_v sprinkle_v which_o be_v to_o rinse_v and_o not_o to_o baptize_v therefore_o i_o be_v not_o right_o baptize_v this_o i_o shall_v answer_v in_o the_o second_o point_n then_o suppose_v another_o say_v i_o be_v baptize_v either_o by_o a_o drunken_a priest_n that_o can_v preach_v and_o baptize_v as_o he_o ought_v mat._n 28.19_o or_o else_o by_o a_o popish_a priest_n who_o have_v his_o ordination_n from_o popish_a bishop_n therefore_o i_o be_v not_o right_o baptize_v and_o may_v be_v rebaptise_v but_o here_o i_o will_v know_v how_o our_o anabaptist_n preacher_n can_v prove_v their_o own_o call_v lawful_a if_o they_o say_v that_o they_o be_v teach_v disciple_n then_o where_o be_v their_o ordination_n it_o be_v either_o from_o man_n of_o other_o calling_n who_o have_v nothing_o to_o do_v in_o it_o or_o else_o they_o have_v none_o at_o all_o and_o how_o be_v their_o first_o teacher_n make_v it_o be_v sure_o the_o devil_n that_o first_o move_v he_o from_o his_o place_n and_o calling_n to_o become_v their_o teacher_n and_o if_o they_o say_v his_o call_v be_v extraordinary_a like_o that_o of_o the_o apostle_n than_o we_o will_v see_v their_o extraordinary_a gift_n and_o till_o than_o we_o can_v believe_v their_o call_v to_o be_v lawful_a and_o so_o themselves_o ought_v not_o to_o preach_v nor_o baptize_v thus_o while_o they_o judge_v our_o minister_n they_o condemn_v themselves_o and_o for_o our_o bishop_n and_o minister_n i_o answer_v and_o say_v that_o they_o be_v ordain_v by_o man_n of_o their_o own_o call_n to_o preach_v and_o to_o administer_v the_o sacrament_n and_o thus_o it_o have_v be_v successive_o from_o the_o apostle_n and_o although_o the_o bishop_n have_v power_n and_o authority_n give_v they_o by_o man_n to_o rule_v over_o their_o brethren_n which_o they_o ought_v not_o yet_o that_o do_v not_o make_v void_a that_o which_o they_o have_v from_o god_n for_o then_o that_o or_o any_o other_o sin_n will_v make_v that_o or_o any_o other_o call_v void_a so_o that_o a_o man_n must_v either_o live_v without_o sin_n or_o be_v cas●●red_v of_o his_o call_n so_o than_o our_o minister_n stand_v be_v lawful_a and_o their_o baptism_n warrantable_a i_o need_v not_o speak_v of_o the_o service_n book_n the_o cross_n and_o sucplesse_a which_o be_v the_o only_a thing_n that_o trouble_v they_o but_o they_o be_v remove_v and_o yet_o they_o stand_v out_o as_o much_o as_o ever_o which_o show_v they_o have_v proud_a and_o froward_a heart_n rather_o than_o any_o just_a cause_n give_v to_o they_o why_o they_o shall_v forsake_v our_o church_n but_o suppose_v there_o be_v some_o exception_n against_o our_o minister_n entrance_n or_o execution_n of_o their_o office_n yet_o that_o will_v not_o make_v their_o baptism_n void_a the_o lord_n be_v wrath_n with_o moses_n and_o will_v have_v kill_v he_o because_o his_o child_n be_v not_o circumcise_v but_o when_o that_o be_v
