II. 1 Cyrus is moved by God to build the temple 5 and giveth leave to the Jews to return and contribute to it 11 He delivereth again the vessels which had been taken thence 25 Artaxerxes forbiddeth the Jews to build any more IN the * 2 Chr. 36.22 Ezra 1.1 c. first year of Cyrus king of the Persians that the word of the Lord might be accomplished that he had promised by the mouth of Jeremy 2 The Lord raised up the spirit of Cyrus the king of the Persians and he made proclamation through all his kingdom and also by writing 3 Saying Thus saith Cyrus king of the Persians The Lord of Israel the most high Lord hath made me king of the whole world 4 And commanded me to build him an house at Jerusalem in Jewry 5 If therefore there be any of you that are of his people let the Lord even his Lord be with him and let him go up to Jerusalem that is in Judea and build the house of the Lord of Israel for ‖ Or this he is the Lord that dwelleth in Jerusalem 6 Whosoever then dwell in the places about let them help him those I say that are his neighbours with gold and with silver 7 With gifts with horses and with cattel and other

XV. 4 Antiochus desireth leave to pass through Judea and granteth great honours to Simon and the Jews 16 The Romanes write to divers kings and nations to favour the Jews 27 Antiochus quarrelleth with Simon 38 and sendeth some to annoy Judea MOreover Antiochus son of Demetrius the king sent setters from the isles of the sea unto Simon the priest and prince of the Jews and to all the people 2 The contents whereof were these King Antiochus to Simon the high priest prince of his nation and to the people of the Jews greeting 3 Forasmuch as certain pestilent men have usurped the kingdom of our fathers and my purpose is to challenge it again that I may restore it to the old estate and to that end have gathered a multitude of forein souldiers together and prepared ships of war 4 My meaning also being to go through the countrey that I may be avenged of them that have destroyed it and made many cities in the kingdom desolate 5 Now therefore I confirm unto thee all the oblations with the kings before me granted thee and whatsoever gifts besides they granted 6 I give thee leave also to coyn money for thy countrey with thine own stamp 7 And as concerning Jerusalem and the sanctuary let them be free and all the armour that thou hast made and fortresses that thou hast built and keepest in thine hands let them remain unto thee 8 And if anything be or shall be owing to the king let it be forgiven thee from this time forth for evermore 9 Furthermore when we have obtained our kingdom we will honour thee and thy nation and thy temple with great honour so that your honour shall be known throughout the world 10 In the hundred threescore and fourteenth year went Antiochus into the land of his fathers at which time all the forces came together unto him so that few were left with Tryphon 11 Wherefore being pursued by king Antiochus he fled unto Dora which lieth by the sea-side 12 For he saw that troubles came upon him all at once and that his forces had forsaken him 13 Then camped Antiochus against Dora having with him an hundred and twenty thousand men of war eight thousand hors-men 14 And when he had compassed the city round about and joyned ships close to the town on the sea side he vexed the city by land and by sea neither suffered he any to go out or in 15 In the mean season came Numenius and his company from Rome having letters to the kings and countreys wherein were written these things 16 Lucius Consul of the Romanes unto king Ptolemee greeting 17 The Jews ambassadours our friends and confederates came unto us to renew the old friendship and league being sent from Simon the high priest and from the people of the Jews 18 And they brought a shield of gold of a thousand pound 19 We thought it good therefore to write unto the kings and countreys that they should do them no harm nor fight against them their cities or countries nor yet aid their enemies against them 20 It seemed also good to us to receive the shield of them 21 If therefore there be any pestilent fellows that have fled from their countrey unto you deliver them unto Simon the high priest that he may punish them according to their own law 22 The same things wrote he likewise unto Demetrius the king and Attalus to ‖ Or Arathes Ariarathes and Arsaces 23 And to all the countreys and to ‖ Or Sampsames Sampsames and the Lacedemonians and to Delus and Myndus and Sicyon and Caria and Samos and Pamphylia and Lycia and Halicarnassus and Rhodus and ‖ Or Basilis Phaselis and Cos and Side and Aradus and Gortyna and Cnidus and Cyprus and Cyrene 24 And the copy hereof they wrote to Simon the high priest 25 So Antiochus the king camped against Dora the second day †Or. bringing his forâ—â—s to it assaulting it continually and making engines by which means he shut up Tryphon that he could neither go out nor in 26 At that time Simon sent him two thousand chosen men to aid him silver also and gold and much armour 27 Nevertheless he would not receive them but brake all the covenants which he had made with him afore became strange unto him 28 Furthermore he sent unto him Athenobius one of his friends to commune with him and say You withhold Joppe and Gazara with the towre that is in Jerusalem which are cities of my realm 29 The borders thereof ye have wasted and done great hurt in the land and got the dominion of many places within my kingdom 30 Now therefore deliver the cities which ye have taken and the tributes of the places whereof ye have gotten dominion ‖ Or. except the borders c. without the borders of Judea 31 Or else give me for them five hundred talents of silver and for the harm that you have done and the tributes of the cities other five hundred talents if not we will come and ‖ Or subdue you in fight fight against you 32 So Athenobius the kings friend came to Jerusalem and when he saw the glory of Simon and the cupboard of gold silver plate his great attendance he was astonished and told him the kings message 33 Then answered Simon and said unto him We have neither taken other mens land nor holden that which appertaineth to others but the inheritance of our fathers which our enemies had wrongfully in possession a certain time 34 Wherefore we having opportunity hold the inheritance of our fathers 35 And whereas thou demandest Joppe and Gazara albeit they did great harm unto the people in our countrey yet will we give an hundred talents for them Hereunto Athenobius answered him not a word 36 But returned in a rage to the king and made report unto him of these speeches and of the glory of Simon and of all that he had seen whereupon the king was exceeding wroth 37 In the mean time fled Tryphon by ship unto Orthosias 38 Then the king made Cendebeus captain of the sea-coast and gave him an host of footmen and hors-men 39 And commanded him to remove his host toward Judea also he commanded him to build up Cedron to fortifie the gates to war against the people but as for the king himself he pursued Tryphon 40 So Cendebeus came to Jamnia began to provoke the people to invade Judea and to take the people prisoners and slay them 41 And when he had built up Cedron he set hors-men there and an host of footmen to the end that issuing out they might make outrodes upon the ways of Judea as the king had commanded him CHAP. XVI 3 Judas and John prevail against the forces sent by Antiochus 11 The captain of Jericho inviteth Simon and two of his sons into his castle and there treacherously murdereth them 19 John is sought for 22 and escapeth and

XXVI 1 The rulers conspire against Christ 6 The woman anointeth his â—ead 14 Judas selleth him 17 Christ eateth the pass-over 26 instituteth his holy supper 36 prayeth in the garden 47 and being betrayed with a kiss 57 is carried to Caiaphas 69 and dented of Peter ANd it came to pass when Jesus had finished all these sayings he said unto his disciples 2 * Mar. 14.1 Luk. 22.1 John 13.1 Ye know that after two days is the feast of the pass over and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified 3 * Joh. 11.47 Then assembled together the chief priests and the scribes and the elders of the people unto the palace of the high priest who was called Caiaphas 4 And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty and kill him 5 But they said Not on the feast day lest there be an uproar among the people 6 ¶ * Mar. 14.3 Joh. 11.1 Now when Jesus was in Bethany in the house of Simon the leper 7 There came unto him a woman having an alabaster-box of very precious ointment and poured it on his head as he sat at meat 8 But when his disciples saw it they had indignation saying To what purpose is this waste 9 For this ointment might have been sold for much and given to the poor 10 When Jesus understood it he said unto them Why trouble ye the woman for she hath wrought a good work upon me 11 * Deut. 15.11 For ye have the poor always with you but me ye have not always 12 For in that she hath poured this ointment on my body she did it for my burial 13 Verily I say unto you Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached in the whole world there shall also this that this woman hath done be told for a memorial of her 14 ¶ * Mark 14.10 Luke 23.3 Then one of the twelve called Judas Iscariot went unto the chief priests 15 And said unto them What will ye give me and I will deliver him unto you And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver 16 And from that time he sought opportunity to betray him 17 ¶ * Mark 14.12 Luke 22.7 Now the first day of the feast of unleavened bread the disciples came to Jesus saying unto him Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the pass-over 18 And he said Go into the city to such a man and say unto him The Master saith My time is at hand I will keep the pass-over at thy house with my disciples 19 And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them and they made ready the pass-over 20 * Mark 14.16 Luke 22.14 Joâ— 13.21 Now when the even was come he sat down with the twelve 21 And as they did eat he said Verily I say unto you that one of you shall betray me 22 And they were exceeding sorrowful and began every one of them to say unto him Lord is it I 23 And he answered and said * Psal 41.9 He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish the same shall betray me 24 The Son of man goeth as it is written of him but wo unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed it had been good for that man if he had not been born 25 Then Judas which betrayed him answered and said Master is it I He said unto him Thou hast said 26 ¶ And as they were eating * 1 Cor. 11.22 24. XCVII 1 The majesty of Gods kingdom 7 The church rejoyceth at Gods judgements upon idolateri 10 An exhortation to godliness and gladness THe LORD reigneth let the earth rejoyce let the †Heb. many or great isles multitude of isles be glad thereof 2 Clouds and darkness are round about him * Psal 89.14 righteousness and judgement are the ‖ Or establishment habitation of his throne 3 A fire goeth before him and burneth up his enemies round about 4 His lightnings enlightned the world the earth saw trembled 5 The hills melted like wax at the presence of the LORD at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth 6 The heavens declare his righteousness and all the people see his glory 7 * Ex. 20.4 Levit. 26.1 Deut. 5.8 Confounded be all they that serve graven images that boast themselves of idols * Heb. 1.6 worship him all ye gods 8 Zion heard and was glad and the daughters of Judah rejoyced because of thy judgements O LORD 9 For thou LORD art high above all the earth thou art exalted far above all gods 10 Ye that love the LORD * Ps 34.14 Amos 5.15 Rom. 12.9 hate evil he preserveth the souls of his saints he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked 11 Light is sown for the righteous and gladness for the upright in heart 12 Rejoyce in the LORD ye righteous and give thanks ‖ Or to the memorial at the remembrance of his holiness PSAL. XCVIII 1 The psalmist exhorteth the Jews 4 the Gentiles 7 and all the creatures to praise God ¶ A psalm O Sing unto the LORD a new song for he hath done marvellous things his right hand and his holy arm hath gotten him the victory 2 * Isa 52.10 The LORD hath made known his salvation his righteousness hath he ‖ Or revealed openly shewed in the sight of the heathen 3 He hath remembred his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God 4 Make a joyful noise unto the LORD all the earth make a loud noise and rejoyce and ring praise 5 Sing unto the LORD with the harp with the harp and the voice of a psalm 6 With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the LORD the King 7 Let the sea roar and the fulness thereof the world and they that dwell therein 8 Let the flouds clap their hands let the hills be joyful together 9 Before the LORD * Ps 96.13 for he cometh to judge the earth with righteousness shall he judge the world and the people with equity PSAL. XCIX 1 The prophet setting forth the kingdom of God in Zion 5 exhorteth all by the example of forefathers to worship God at his holy hill THe LORD reigneth let the people tremble he sitteth between the cherubims let the earth †Heb. stagger be moved 2 The LORD is great in Zion and he is high above all people 3 Let them praise thy great and terrible name for it is holy 4 The kings strength also loveth judgement thou dost establish equity thou executest judgement and righteousness in Jacob. 5 Exalt ye the LORD our God and worship at his footstool for ‖ Or it is holy he is holy 6 Moses and Aaron among his priests and Samuel among them that call upon his name they called upon the LORD he answered them 7 He spake unto them in the cloudy pillar they kept his testimomes and the ordinance that he gave them 8 Thou answeredst them O LORD our God thou wast a God that forgavest them though thou tookest vengeance of their inventions 9 Exalt the LORD our God and worship at his holy hill for the LORD our God is holy PSAL. C. 1 An exhortation to praise God cheerfully 3 for his greatness 4 and for his power ¶ A psalm of ‖ Or thankâ—giving praise MAke a joyful noise unto the LORD †Heb. all the earth all ye lands 2 Serve the LORD with gladness come before his presence with singing 3 Know ye that the LORD he is God it is he that hath made us ‖ Or and his we are and not we our selves we are his people the sheep of his pasture 4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving and into his courts with praise be thankful unto him and bless his name 5 Fort the LORD is good his mercy is everlasting and his truth endureth †Heb. to generation and generation to all generations PSAL. CI. David maketh a vow and profession of godliness ¶ A psalm of David I Will sing of mercy and judgement unto thee O LORD will I sing 2 I will behave my self wisely in a perfect way O when wilt thou come unto me I will walk within my house with a perfect heart 3 I will set no †Heb. thing of Belial wicked thing before mine eyes I hate the work of them that turn aside it shall not cleave to me 4 A froward heart shall depart from me I will not know a wicked person 5 Whoso privily slandereth his neighbour him will I cut off him that hath an high look and a proud heart will not I suffer 6 Mine eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land that they may dwell with me he that walketh ‖ Or perfect in the way in a perfect way he shall serve me 7 He that worketh
the moneth Adar the fourteenth and fifteenth day of the same moneth with an assembly and joy and with gladness before God according to the generations for ever among his people CHAP. XI 2 The sock and quality of Mardocheus 6 He dreameth of two dragons coming forth to fight 10 and of a little fountain which became a great water IN the fourth year of the reign of Ptolomeus and Cleopatra Dositheus who said he was a priest and Levite and Ptolomeus his son brought this epistle of Phurim which they said was the same and that Lysimachus the son of Ptolomeus that was in Jerusalem had interpreted it 2 In the second year of the reign of Anaxerxes the great in the first day of the moneth Nisan Mardocheus the son of Jairus the son of Semei the son of Cisai of the tribe of Benjamin had a dream 3 Who was a Jew and dwelt in the city of Sula a great man being a servitour in the kings court 4 He was also one of the captives which Nabuchodonosor the king of Babylon carried from Jerusalem with Jechonias king of Judea and this was his dream 5 Behold a noise of a tumult with thunder and earthquakes and uproar in the land 6 And behold two great dragons came forth ready to fight and their cry was great 7 And at their cry all nations were prepared to hattel that they might fight against the righteous people 8 And so a day of darkness and obscurity tribulation and anguish affliction and great uproar upon the earth 9 And the whole righteous nation was troubled fearing their own evils and were ready to perish 10 Then they cried unto God and upon their cry as it were from a little fountain was made a great floud even much water 11 The light and the sun rose up and the lowly were exalted and devoured the glorious 12 Now when Mardocheus who had seen this dream and what God had determined to do was awake he bare this dream in minde and until night by all means was desirous to know it CHAP. XII 2 The conspiracy of the two eunuchs is discovered by Mardocheus 5 for which he is entertained by the king and rewarded ANd Mardocheus took his rest in the court with Gabatha and Tharra the two eunuchs of the king and keepers of the palace 2 * Esth 2. â—1 6.2 And he heard their devices and searched out their purposes and learned that they were about to lay hands upon Artaxerxes the king and so he certified the king of them 3 Then the king examined the two eunuchs and after that they had confessed it they were strangled 4 And the king made a record of these things and Mardocheus also wrote thereof 5 So the king commanded Mardocheus to serve in the court and for this he rewarded him 6 Howbeit Aman the son of Amadathus the Agagite who was in great honour with the king sought to molest Mardocheus and his people because of the two eunuchs of the king CHAP. XIII 1 The copy of the kings letters to destroy the Jews 8 The prayer of Mardocheus for them THe copy of the letters was this Joseph Antâ—â— lib. 11. cap. 6. The great king Artaxerxes writeth these things to the princes and governours that are under him from India unto Ethiopia in an hundred and seven and twenty provinces 2 After that I became lord over many nations and had dominion over the whole world not lifted up with presumption of my authority but carrying my self alway with equity and mildness I purposed to settle my subjects continually in a quiet life and making my kingdom ‖ Or â—ildt peaceable and open for passage to the utmost coasts to renew peace which is desired of all men 3 Now when I asked my counsellours how this might be brought to pass Aman that excelled in wisdom among us and was approved for his constant good will and stedfast fidelity and had the honour of the second place in the kingdom 4 Declared unto us that in all nations throughout the world there was scattered a certain malicious people that had laws contrary to all nations and continually despised the commandments of kings so as the uniting of our kingdoms honourably intended by us cannot ‖ Or be settled go forward 5 Seeing then we understand that this people alone is continually in opposition unto all men differing in the strange manner of their laws and evil-affected to our state working all the mischief they can that our kingdom may not be firmly stablished 6 Therefore have we commanded that all they that are signified in writing unto you by Aman who is ordained over the affairs and is ‖ Or second from us next unto us shall all with their wives and children be utterly destroyed by the sword of their enemies without all mercy and pity the fourteenth day of the twelfth moneth Adar of this present year 7 That they who of old and now also are malicious may in one day with violence go into the grave and so ever hereafter cause our affairs to be well settled and without trouble 8 Then Mardocheus thought upon all the works of the Lord and made his prayer unto him 9 Saying O Lord Lord the King Almighty for the whole world is in thy power and if thou hast appointed to save Israel there is no man that can gainsay thee 10 For thou hast made heaven and earth and all the wondrous things under the heaven 11 Thou art Lord of all things and there is no man that can resist thee which art the Lord. 12 Thou knowest all things and thou knowest Lord that it was neither in contempt nor pride nor for any desire of glory that I did not how down to proud Aman. 13 For I could have been content with good will for the salvation of Israel to kiss the soles of his feet 14 But I did this that I might not prefer the glory of man above the glory of God neither will I worship any but thee O God neither will I do it in pride 15 And now O Lord God and King spare thy people for their eyes are upon us to bring us to nought yea they desire to destroy the inheritance that hath been thine from the beginning 16 Despise not the portion which thou hast delivered out of Egypt for thine own self 17 Hear my prayer and be merciful unto thine inheritance turn our sorrow into joy that we may live O Lord and praise thy name and ‖ Or â—â—ut or stop not destroy not the mouths of them that praise thee O Lord. 18 All Israel in like manner cried most †Gr. mightily earnestly unto the Lord because their death was before their eyes CHAP. XIV 1 The prayer of queen Esther for her self and her people QUeen Esther also being in fear of death reforted unto the Lord 2 And laid away her glorious apparel and put on the garments of anguish and mourning and in stead of precious ointments she
him 〈◊〉 upon Bel. bring him and intreat Bel that he may speak as though he were able to understand 42 Yet they cannot understand this themselves and leave them for they have no ‖ Or sense knowledge 43 The women also with cords about them sitting in the ways burn bran for perfume but if any of them drawn by some that passeth by lie with him she reproacheth her fellow that she was not thought as worthy as her self nor her cord broken 44 Whatsoever is done among them is false how may it then be thought or said that they are gods 45 They are made of carpenters and gold-smiths they can be nothing else then the workman will have them to be 46 And they themselves that made them can never continue long how should then the things that are made of them be gods 47 For they left lies and reproaches to them that come after 48 For when there cometh any war or plague upon them the priests consult with themselves where they may be hidden with them 49 How then cannot men perceive that they be no gods which can neither save themselves from war nor from plague 50 * Ps 115.4 Wisd 13.10 For seeing they be but of wood and overlaid with silver and gold it shall be known hereafter that they are false 51 And it shall manifestly appear to all nations and kings that they are no gods but the works of mens hands and that there is no work of God in them 52 Who then may not know that they are no gods 53 For neither can they set up a king in the land nor give rain unto men 54 Neither can they judge their own cause nor redress a wrong being unable for they are as crows between heaven and earth 55 Whereupon when fire falleth upon the house of gods of wood or laid over with gold or silver their priests will flee away and escape but they themselves shall be burnt asunder like beams 56 Moreover they cannot withstand any king or enemies how can it then be thought or said that they be gods 57 Neither are those gods of wood and laid over with silver or gold able to escape either from theeves or robbers 58 Whos 's gold and silver and garments wherewith they are clothed they that are strong do take and go away withal neither are they able to help themselves 59 Therefore it is better to be a king that sheweth his power or else a profitable vessel in an house which the owner shall have use of then such false gods or to be a door in an house to keep such things safe as be therein then such false gods or a pillar of wood in a palace then such false gods 60 For sun moon and stars being bright and sent to do their offices are obedient 61 In like manner the lightning when it breaketh forth is easie to be seen and ‖ Or the same â—ind after the same manner the wind bloweth in every countrey 62 And when God commandeth the clouds to go over the whole world they do as they are bidden 63 And the fire sent from above to consume hills and woods doeth as it is commanded but these are like unto them neither in shew nor power 64 Wherefore it is neither to be supposed nor said that they are gods seeing they are able neither to judge causes nor to do good unto men 65 Knowing therefore that they are no gods fear them not 66 For they can neither curse nor bless kings 67 Neither can they shew signs in the heavens among the heathen nor shine as the sun nor give light as the moon 68 The beasts are better then they for they can get under a covert and help themselves 69 It is then by no means manifest unto us that they are gods therefore fear them not 70 For as a scar-crow in a garden of cucumbers keepeth nothing so are their gods of wood and laid over with silver and gold 71 And likewise their gods of wood and laid over with silver and gold are like to a whitethorn in an orchard that every bird sitteth upon as also to a dead body that is cast into the dark 72 And you shall know them to be no gods by the ‖ Or purple and brightness bright purple that rotteth upon them and they themselves afterward shall be eaten and shall be a reproach in the countrey 73 Better therefore is the just man that hath none idols for he shall be far from reproach ¶ The song of the three holy children which followeth in the third chapter of DANIEL after this place fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace That which followeth is not in the Hebrew to wit And they walked unto these words Then Nebuchadnezzar verse 24. 2 Azarias his prayer and confession in the flame 24 wherewith the Caldeans about the oven were consumed but the three children within it were not hurt 28 The song of the three children in the oven ANd they walked in the midst of the fire praising God and blessing the Lord. 2 Then Azarias stood up and prayed on this manner and opening his mouth in the midst of the fire said 3 Blessed art thou O Lord God of our fathers thy name is worthy to be praised and glorified for evermore 4 For thou art righteous in all the things that thou hast done to us yea true are all thy works thy ways are right and * Psal â—â— 1â— all thy judgements truth 5 In all the things which thou hast brought upon us and upon the holy city of our fathers even Jerusalem thou hast executed true judgement for according to truth and judgement didst thou bring all these things upon us because of our sins 6 For we have sinned and committed iniquity departing from thee 7 In all things have we trespassed and not obeyed thy commandments nor kept them neither done as thou hast commanded us that it might go well with us 8 Wherefore all that thou hast brought upon us and every thing that thou hast done to us thou hast done in true judgement 9 And thou didst deliver us into the hands of lawless enemies most hateful forsakers of God and to an unjust king and the most wicked in all the world 10 And now we cannot open our mouths we are become a shame and reproach to thy servants and to them that worship thee 11 Yet deliver us not up wholly for thy names sake neither disanul thou thy covenant 12 And cause not thy mercy to depart from us for thy beloved Abrahams sake for thy servant Isaacs sake and for thy holy Israels sake 13 To whom thou hast spoken and promised That thou wouldest multiply their seed as the stars of heaven and as the sand that lieth upon the sea-shore 14 For we O Lord are become less then any nation and be kept under this day in all the world because of our sins 15 Neither is there at this time prince or prophet or leader or
And so they through mine hypocrisie and desire to live a little time and a moment longer should be deceived by me and I get a slain to mine old age and make it abominable 26 For though for the present time I should be delivered from the punishment of men yet should I not escape the hand of the Almighty neither alive nor dead 27 Wherefore now manfully changing this life I will shew my self such an one as mine age requireth 28 And leave a notable example to such as be young to die willingly and couragiously for the honourable and holy laws and when he had said these words immediately he went to the torment 29 They that led him changing the good will they bare him a little before into hatred because the foresaid speeches proceeded as they thought from ‖ Or madness or â—ridâ— a desparate minde 30 But when he was ready to die with stripes he groaned and said It is manifest unto the Lord that hath the holy knowledge that whereas I might have been delivered from death I now endure sore pains in body by being beaten but in soul am well content to suffer these things because I fear him 31 And thus this man died leaving his death for an example of a noble courage and a memorial of vertue not onely unto young men but unto all his nation CHAP. VII The constancy and cruel death of seven brethren and their mother in one day because they would not eat swines flesh at the kings commandment IT came to pass also that seven brethren with their mother were taken and compelled by the king against the law to taste swines flesh and were tormented with scourges and whips 2 But one of them that spake first said thus What wouldest thou ask or learn of us we are ready to die rather then to transgress the laws of our fathers 3 Then the king being in a rage commanded pans and caldrons to be made but. 4 Which forthwith being heared he commanded to cut out the tongue of him that spake first and to cut off the utmost parts of his body the rest of his brethren and his mother looking on 5 Now when he was thus maimed in all his members he commanded him being yet alive to be brought to the fire and to be fried in the pan and as the vapour of the pan was for a good space dispersed they exhorted one another with the mother to die manfully saying thus 6 The Lord God looketh upon us and in truth hath comfort in us as * Deu. 32.36 Moses in his song which witnessed to their faces declared saying And he shall be comforted in his servants 7 So when the first was dead after this manner they brought the second to make him a mocking-stock and when they had Pulled off the skin of his head with the hair they asked him Wilt thou eat before thou be punished throughout every member of thy body 8 But he answered in his own language and said No. Wherefore he also received the next torment in order as the former did 9 And when he was at the last gasp he said Thou like a fury takest us out of this present life but the King of the world shall raise us up who have died for his laws unto everlasting life 10 After him was the third made a mocking-stock and when he was required he put out his tongue and that right soon holding forth his hands manfully 11 And said couragiously These I had from heaven and for his laws I despise them and from him I hope to receive them again 12 Insomuch that the king and they that were with him marvelled at the young mans courage for that he nothing regarded the pains 13 Now when this man was dead also they tormented and mangled the fourth in like manner 14 So when he was ready to die he said thus It is good being put to death by men to look for hope from God to be raised up again by him as for thee thou shalt have no resurrection to life 15 Afterward they brought the fifth also and mangled him 16 Then looked he unto the king and said Thou hast power over men thou art corruptible thou doest what thou wilt yet think not that our nation is forsaken of God 17 But abide a while and behold his great power how he will torment thee and thy seed 18 After him also they brought the sixth who being ready to die said Be not deceived without cause for we suffer these things for our selves having sinned against our God therefore marvellous things are done unto us 19 But think not thou that takest in hand to strive against God that thou shalt escape unpunished 20 But the mother was marvellous above all and worthy of honourable memory for when she saw her seven sons slain within the space of one day she bare it with a good courage because of the hope that she had in the Lord. 21 Yea she exhorted every one of them in her own language filled with couragious spirits and stirring up her womanish thoughts with a manly stomach she said unto them 22 I cannot tell how you came into my womb for I neither gave you breath nor life neither was it I that formed the members of every one of you 23 But doubtless the Creatour of the world who formed the generation of man and found out the beginning of all things will also of his own mercy give you breath and life again as you now regard not your own selves for his laws sake 24 Now Antiochus thinking himself despised and suspecting it to be a reproachful speech whilest the youngest was yet alive did not onely exhort him by words but also assured him with oaths that he would make him both a rich and a happy man if he would turn from the laws of his fathers and that also he would take him for his friend and trust him with affairs 25 But when the young man would in no case hearken unto him the king called his mother and exhorted her that she would counsel the young man to save his life 26 And when he had exhorted her with many words she promised him that she would counsel her son 27 But she bowing her self towards him laughing the cruel tyrant to scorn spake in her countrey language on this manner O my son have pity upon me that bare thee nine moneths in my womb and gave thee such three years and nourished thee and brought thee up unto this age and endured the troubles of education 28 I beseech thee my son look upon the heaven and the earth and all that is therein and consider that God made them of things that were not and so was mankinde made likewise 29 Fear not this tormentour but being worthy of thy brethren take thy death that I may receive thee again in mercy with thy brethren 30 Whiles she was yet speaking these words the young man said Whom wait ye for I will not obey the kings
fathers graves 40 Now under the coats of every one that was slain they found things consecrated to the idols of the Jamnites which is forbidden the Jews by * Deut. â—7 7 the law Then every man saw that this was the cause wherefore they were slain 41 All men therefore praising the Lord the righteous Judge who had opened the things that were hid 42 Betook themselves unto prayer and besought him that the sin committed might wholly be put out of remembrance Besides that noble Judas exhorted the people to keep themselves from sin forsomuch as they saw before their eyes the things that came to pass for the sins of those that were slain 43 And when he had made a gathering throughout the company to the sum of two thousand drachnies of silver he sent it to Jerusalem to offer a sin offering doing therein very well and honestly in that he was mindful of the resurrection 44 For if he had not hoped that they that were slain should have risen again it had been superfluous and vain to pray for the dead 45 And also in that he perceived that there was great favour said up for those that died godly It was an holy and good thought Whereupon he made a reconciliation for the dead that they might be delivered from sin CHAP. XIII 1 Eupator invadeth Judea 15 Judas by night slayeth many 18 Eupators purpose is defeated 23 He maketh peace with Judas IN the hundred fourty and ninth year it was told Judas that Antiochus Eupator was coming with a great power into Judea 2 And with him Lysias his protectour and ruler of his affairs having either of them a Grecian power of footmen an hundred ten thousand and hors-men five thousand and three hundred and elephants two and twenty and three hundred chariots armed with hooks 3 Menelaus also joyned himself with them and with great dissimulation encouraged Antiochus not for the safeguard of the countrey but because he thought to have been made governour 4 But the King of kings moved Antiochus minde against this wicked wretch and Lysias informed the king that this man was the cause of all mischief so that the king commanded to bring him unto Berea and to put him to death as the manner is in that place 5 Now there was in that place a towre of fifty cubits high full of ashes and it had a round instrument which on every side hanged down into the ashes 6 And whosoever was condemned of sacriledge or had committed any other grievous crime there did all men thrust him unto death 7 Such a death it hapned that wicked man to die not having so much as burial in the earth and that most justly 8 For insomuch as he had committed many sins about the altar whose fire and ashes were holy he received his death in ashes 9 Now the king came with a barbarous and haughty minde to do far worse to the Jews then had been done in his fathers time 10 Which things when Judas perceived he commanded the multitude to call upon the Lord night and day that if ever at any other time he would now also help them being at the point to be put from their law from their countrey and from the holy temple 11 And that he would not suffer the people that ‖ Or bad bad a little respite had even now been but a little refreshed to be in subjection to the blasphemous nations 12 So when they had all done this together and besought the merciful Lord with weeping and fasting and lying flat upon the groud three days long Judas having exhorted them commanded they should be in a readiness 13 And Judas being apart with the elders determined before the kings host should enter into Judea and get the city to go forth and try the matter in fight by the help of the Lord. 14 So when he had committed all to the ‖ Or Lord. Creatour of the world and exhorted his souldiers to fight manfully even unto death for the laws the temple the city the countrey the common-wealth he camped by Modin 15 And having given the watch-word to them that were about him Victory is of God with the most valiant choice young men he went in into the kings tent by night slew in the camp about four thousand men and the chiefest of the elephants with all that were upon him 16 And at last they filled the camp with sear and tumult and departed with good success 17 This was done in the break of the day because the protection of the Lord did help him 18 Now when the king had taken a taste of the manliness of the Jews he went about to take the holds by policy 19 And marched towards Bethsura which was a strong hold of the Jews but he was put to flight failed and lost of his men 20 For Judas had conveyed unto them that were in it such things as were necessary 21 But Rhodochus who was in the Jews host disclosed the secrets to the enemies therefore he was sought out and when they had gotten him they put him in prison 22 The king treated with them in Bethsura the second time gave his hand took theirs departed sought with Judas was over come 23 Heard that Philip who was leâ—t over the affairs in Antioch ‖ Or rebelled was desperately bent confounded intreated the Jews submitted himself and sware to all equal conditions agreed with them and offered sacrifice honoured the temple and dealt kindly with the place 24 And accepted well of Maccabeus made him principal governour from Ptolemais unto the Gerrhenians 25 Came to Ptolemais the people there were grieved for the covenants for they stormed because they would make their covenants void 26 Lysias went up to the judgment-seat said as much as could be in defence of the cause perswaded pacified made them well affected returned to Antioch Thus it went touching the kings coming departing CHAP. XIV 6 Aleimus accuseth Judas 18 Nicanor maketh peace with Judas 39 He seeketh to take Bazis 46 who to escape his bands killeth himself AFter three years was Judas informed that Demetrius the son of Seleucus having entred by the haven of Tripolis with a great power and navy 2 Had taken the countrey and killed Antiochus and Lysias his protectour 3 Now one Alcimus who had been high priest and had defiled himself wilfully in the times of their mingling with the Gentiles seeing that by no means he could save himself nor have any more access to the holy altar 4 Came to king Demetrius in the hundred and one and fiftieth year presenting unto him a crown of gold and a palm and also of the boughs which were ‖ Or thought to be of the temple used solemnly in the temple so that day he held his peace 5 Howbeit having gotten opportunity to further his foolish enterprise and being called into counsel by Demetrius and asked how the Jews stood affected and what they intended he answered thereunto

III. 2 Milk is fit for children 3 Strife and division arguments of a fiesbly minde 7 He that planteth and he that watereth is nothing 9 The ministers are Gods fellow-workmen 11 Christ the onely foundation 16 Meu the temples of God 17 which must be kept holy 19 The wisdom of this world is foolishness with God ANd I brethren could not speak unto you as unto spiritual but as unto carnal even as unto babes in Christ 2 I have fed you with * Heb. 5.12 milk and not with meat for hitherto ye were not able to bear it neither yet now are ye able 3 For ye are yet carnal for whereas there is among you envying and strife and ‖ Or factions divisions are ye not carnal and walk †Gr. according to man as men 4 For while one saith I am of Paul and another I am of Apollos are ye not carnal 5 Who then is Paul and who is Apollos but ministers by whom ye beleeved even as the Lord gave to every man 6 I have planted Apollos watered but God gave the increase 7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing neither he that watereth but God that giveth the increase 8 Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one * Psal 62.12 Gal. 6.5 and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour 9 For we are labourers together with God ye are Gods ‖ Or tillage husbandry ye are Gods building 10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me as a wise master-builder I have laid the foundation and another buildeth thereon But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon 11 For other foundation can no man lay then that is laid which is Jesus Christ 12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold silver precious stones wood hay stubble 13 Every mans work shall be made manifest For the day shall declare it because it †Gr. is revealed shall be revealed by fire and the fire shall try every mans work of what sort it is 14 If any mans work abide which he hath built thereupon he shall receive a reward 15 If any mans work shall be burnt he shall suffer loss but he himself shall be saved yet so as by fire 16 * Chap. 6.19 2 Cor. 6.16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you 17 If any man ‖ Or destroy defile the temple of God him shall God destroy for the temple of God is holy which temple ye are 18 Let no man deceive himself If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world let him become a fool that he may be wise 19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God for it is written * Job 5.13 He taketh the wise in their own craftiness 20 And again * Psal 94.11 The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise that they are vain 21 Therefore let no man glory in men for all things are yours 22 Whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or things present or things to come all are yours 23 And ye are Christs and Christ is Gods CHAP. IV. 1 In what account the ministers ought to be had 7 We have nothing which we have not received 9 The apostles spectacles to the world angels and men 13 the filth and off-scouring of the world 15 yet our fathers in Christ 16 whom we ought to follow LEt a man so account of us as of the ministers of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God 2 Moreover it is required in stewards that a man be found faithful 3 But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged of you or of mans †Gr. day judgement yea I judge not my own self 4 For I know nothing by my self yet am I not hereby justified but he that judgeth me is the Lord. 5 * Matth. 7.1 Rom. 2.1 Therefore judge nothing before the time until the Lord come who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts and then shall every man have praise of God 6 And these things brethren I have in a figure transferred to my self and to Apollos for your sakes that ye might learn in us not to think of men above that which is written that no one of you be puffed up for one against another 7 For who †Gr. distinguisheth thee maketh thee to differ from another and what hast thou that thou didst not receive now if thou didst receive it why dost thou glory as if thou hadst not received it 8 Now ye are full now ye are rich ye have reigned as kings without us and I would to God ye did reign that we also might reign with you 9 For I think that God hath let forth us the apostles last as it were appointed to death For we are made a †Gr. theatre spectacle unto the world and to angels and to men 10 We are fools for Christs sake but ye are wise in Christ we are weak but ye are strong ye are honourable but we are despised 11 Even unto this present hour we both hunger and thirst and are naked and are buffeted and have no certain dwelling place 12 * Acts 12.34 1 Thes 2.9 2 Thes 3.8 And labour working with our own hands being reviled we bless being persecuted we suffer it 13 * Mat. 5.44 Being defamed we intreat we are made as the filth of the world and are the off-scouring of all things unto this day 14 I write not these things to shame you but as my beloved sons I warn you 15 For though you have ten thousand instructours in Christ yet have ye not many fathers for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel 16 Wherefore I beseech you be ye followers of me 17 For this cause have I sent unto you Timotheus who is my beloved son and faithful in the Lord who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which be in Christ as I teach every where in every church 18 Now some are puffed up as though I would not come to you 19 * Acts 19.21 But I will come to you shortly * Jam. 4.15 if the Lord will and will know not the speech of them which are puffed up but the
If any man worship the beast and his image and receive his mark in his forehead or in his hand 10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb 11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever and they have no rest day nor night who worship the beast and his image and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name 12 Here is the patience of the saints here are they that keep the commandments of God and the saith of Jesus 13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me Write Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord ‖ Or from henceforth saith the Spirit Yea. from henceforth Yea saith the Spirit that they may rest from their labours and their works do follow them 14 And I looked and behold a white cloud and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man having on his head a golden crown and in his hand a sharp sickle 15 And another angel came out of the temple crying with a load voice to him that sat on the cloud * Joel 3.13 Thrust in thy sickle and reap for the time is come for thee to reap for the harvest of the earth is ‖ Or dried ripe 16 And he that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth and the earth was reaped 17 And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven he also having a sharp sickle 18 And another angel came out from the altar which had power over fire and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle saying Thrust in thy sharp sickle and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth for her grapes are fully ripe 19 And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth and gathered the vine of the earth and cast it into the great wine-press of the wrath of God 20 And the wine-press was troden without the city and bloud came out of the wine-press even unto the horse-bridles by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs CHAP. XV. 1 The seven angels with the seven last plagues 3 The song of them that overcome the beast 7 The seven vials full of the wrath of God ANd I saw another signe in heaven great and marvellous seven angels having the seven last plagues for in them is filled up the wrath of God 2 And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire and them that had gotten the victory over the beast and over his image and over his mark and over the number of his name stand on the sea of glass having the harps of God 3 And they sing * Exod. 15.1 the song of Moses the servant of God and the song of the Lamb saying Great and marvellous are thy works Lord God Almighty * Psal 145.17 just and true are thy ways thou king of saints 4 * Jer. 10.7 Who shall not fear thee O Lord and glorifie thy name for thou onely art holy for all nations shall come and worship before thee for thy judgements are made manifest 5 And after that I looked and behold the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened 6 And the seven angels came out of the temple having the seven plagues clothed in pure and white linen and having their breasts girded with golden girdles 7 And one of the four beasts gave unto the seven angels seven golden vials full of the wrath of God who liveth for ever and ever 8 And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God and from his power and no man was able to enter into the temple till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled CHAP. XVI 2 The angels pour out thrir vials full of wrath 6 The plagues that follow thereupon 15 Christ cometh as a thief Blessed are they that watch ANd I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels Go your ways and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth 2 And the first went and poured out his vial upon the earth and there fell a noisom and grievous sore upon the men which had the mark of the beast and upon them which worshipped his image 3 And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea and it became as the bloud of a dead man and every living soul died in the sea 4 And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters and they became bloud 5 And I heard the angel of the waters say Thou art righteous O Lord which art and wast and shalt be because thou hast judged thus 6 For they have shed the bloud of saints and prophets and thou hast given them bloud to drink for they are worthy 7 And I heard another out of the altar say Even so Lord God Almighty true and righteous are thy judgements 8 And the fourth angel poured out his vial upon the sun and power was given unto him to scorch men with fire 9 And men were ‖ Or burned scorched with great heat and blasphemed the name of God which hath power over these plagues and they repented not to give him glory 10 And the fifth angel poured out his vial upon the seat of the beast and his kingdom was full of darkness and they gnawed their tongues for pain 11 And blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores and repented not of their deeds 12 And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates and the water thereof was dried up that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared 13 And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet 14 For they are the spirits of devils working miracles which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world to gather them to the battel of that great day of God Almighty 15 * Matth. 24.43 Chap. 3 3◠Behold I come as a thief Blessed is he that watcheth and keepeth his garments lest he walk naked and they see his shame 16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon 17 And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air and there came a great voice out of the temple of heaven from the throne saying it is done 18 And there were voices and thunders and lightnings and there was a great earthquake such as was not since men were upon the earth so mighty an earthquake and so great 19 And the great city was divided into three parts and the cities of the nations fell and great
lion in secret places 11 He hath turned aside my ways and pulled me in pieces he hath made me desolate 12 He hath bent his bowe and set me as a mark for the arrow 13 He hath caused the †Heb. sonâ— arrows of his quiver to enter into my reins 14 I was a * Jer. 20.7 derision to all my people and their song all the day 15 He hath filled me with †Heb. bitternesses bitterness he hath made me drunken with wormwood 16 He hath also broken my teeth with gravel-stones he hath ‖ Or. rolled me in the ashes covered me with ashes 17 And thou hast removed my soul far off from peace I forgat †Heb. good prosperity 18 And I said My strength and my hope is perished from the LORD 19 ‖ Or remember Remembring mine affliction and my misery the wormwood and the gall 20 My soul hath them still in remembrance and is †Heb. bowed humbled in me 21 This I †Heb. make to return to my heart recal to my minde therefore have I hope 22 ¶ It is of the LORDS mercies that we are not consumed because his compassions fail not 23 They are new every morning great is thy faithfulness 24 The LORD is my * Ps 15.5 73.26 and 119.57 Jer 10.15 portion saith my soul therefore will I hope in him 25 The LORD is good unto them that wait for him to the soul that seeketh him 26 It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD 27 It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth 28 He sitteth alone and keepeth silence because he hath born it upon him 29 He putteth his mouth in the dust if so be there may be hope 30 He giveth his check to him that smiteth him he is filled full with reproach 31 For the Lord will not cast off for ever 32 But though he cause grief yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies 33 For he doth not afflict †Heb. from his heart willingly nor grieve the children of men 34 To crush under his feet all the prisoners of the earth 35 To turn aside the right of a man before the face of ‖ Or a superiâ—â—â— the most High 36 To subvert a man in his cause the Lord ‖ Or seeth not approveth not 37 ¶ Who is he * Ps 33.9 that saith and it cometh to pass when the Lord commandeth it not 38 Out of the mouth of the most High proceedeth not * Am. 3.6 evil and good 39 Wherefore doth a living man ‖ Or murmurs complain a man for the punishment of his sins 40 Let us search and try our ways and turn again to the LORD 41 Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens 42 We have transgressed and have rebelled thou hast not pardoned 43 Thou hast covered with anger and persecuted us thou hast slain thou hast not pitied 44 Thou hast covered thy self with a cloud that our prayer should not pass through 45 Thou hast made us as the * 1 Cor. 4.13 off-scouring and refuse in the midst of the people 46 All our enemies have opened their mouths against us 47 * Is 24.17 Fear and a snare is come upon us desolation and destruction 48 Mine eye runneth down with rivers of water for the destruction of the daughter of my people 49 Mine eye trickleth down and ceaseth not without any intermission 50 Till the LORD look down and behold from heaven 52 Mine eye affecteth †Heb. my sâ—ul mine heart ‖ Or more then all because of all the daughters of my city 52 Mine enemies chased me sore like a bird without cause 53 They have cut off my life in the dungeon and cast a stone upon me 54 Waters flowed over mine head then I said I am cut off 55 ¶ I called upon thy name O LORD out of the low dungeon 56 Thou hast heard my voice hide not thine ear at my breathing at my cry 57 Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee thou saidst Fear not 58 O LORD thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul thou hast redeemed my life 59 O LORD thou hast seen my wrong judge thou my cause 60 Thou hast seen all their vengeance and all their imaginations against me 61 Thou hast heard their reproach O LORD and all their imaginations against me 62 The lips of those that rose up against me and their device against me all the day 63 Behold their sitting down and their rising up I am their musick 64 ¶ Render unto them a recompence O LORD according to the work of their hands 65 Give them ‖ Or obstinacy of heart sorrow of heart thy curse unto them 66 Persecute and destroy them in anger from under the * Ps 8.3 heavens of the LORD CHAP. IV. 1 Zion bewalleth her pitiful estate 13 She confesseth her sins 21 Edom is threatned 22 Zion is comforted HOw is the gold become dim how is the most fine gold changed the stones of the sanctuary are poured out in the top of every street 2 The precious sons of Zion comparable to fine gold how are they esteemed as earthen pitchers the work of the hands of the potter 3 Even the ‖ Or stâ—â—alveâ— sea-monsters draw out the breast they give suck to their young ones the daughter of my people is become cruel like the ostriches in the wilderness 4 The tongue of the sucking childe cleaveth to the roof of his mouth for thirst the young children ask bread and no man breaketh it unto them 5 They that did feed delicately are desolate in the streets they that were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills 6 For the ‖ Or iniquity punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater then the punishment of the sin of Sodom that was * Gen. 19.35 overthrown as in a moment and no hands stayed on her 7 Her Nazarites were purer then snow they were whiter then milk they were more ruddy in body then rubies their polishing was of sapphire 8 Their visage is †Heb. carker then blackness blacker then a coal they are not known in the streets their skin cleaveth to their bones it is withered it is become like a stick 9 They that be slain with the sword are better then they that be slain with hunger for these †Heb. â—low out pine away stricken through for want of the fruits of the field 10 The hands of the pitiful women have sodden their own children they were their * Deu. 28.57 2 Kin. 6.29 meat in the destruction of the daughter of my people 11 The LORD hath accomplished his fury he hath poured out his fierce anger and hath kindled a fire in Zion and it hath devoured the foundations thereof 12 The kings of the earth and all
the inhabitants of the world would not have beleeved that the adversary and the enemy should have entred into the gates of Jerusalem 13 ¶ * Jer. 5.31 and 23.21 For the sins of her prophets and the iniquities of her priests that have shed the bloud of the just in the midst of her 14 They have wandred as blinde men in the streets they have polluted themselves with bloud ‖ Or in that they could not but touch so that men could not touch their garments 15 They cried unto them Depart ye ‖ Or ye polluted it is unclean depart depart touch not when they fled away and wandred they said among the heathen They shall no more sojourn there 16 The ‖ Or faâ—â— anger of the LORD hath divided them he will no more regard them they respected not the persons of the priests they favoured not the elders 17 As for us our eyes as yet failed for our vain help in our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save us 18 They hunt out steps that we cannot go in our streets our end is near our days are fulfilled for our end is come 19 Our persecutours are swifter then the eagles of the heaven they pursued us upon the mountains they said wait for us in the wilderness 20 The * Gen. 2.7 breath of our nostrils the anointed of the LORD was taken in their pits of whom we said Under his shadow we shall live among the heathen 21 Rejoyce and be glad O daughter of Edom that dwellest in the land of Uz the cup also shall pass through unto thee thou shalt be drunken and shalt make thy self naked 22 ¶ ‖ Or Thine iniquity The punishment of thine iniquity is accomplished O daughter of Zion he will no more carry thee away into captivity he will visit thine iniquity O daughter of Edom he will ‖ Or carry thee captive for thy sins discover thy sins CHAP. V. A pitiful complaint of Zion in prayer unto God REmember O LORD what is come upon us consider and behold our reproach 2 Our inheritance is turned to strangers our houses to aliens 3 We are orphans and fatherless our mothers are as widows 4 We have drunken our water for money our wood †Heb. cometh for price is sold unto us 5 †Heb. on our necks are we persecuted Our necks are under persecution we labour and have no rest 6 We have given the hand to the Egyptians and to the Assyrians to be satisfied with bread 7 * Jer. 31.29 Ezek. 18.2 Our fathers have sinned and are not and we have born their iniquities 8 Servants have ruled over us there is none that doth deliver us out of their hand 9 We gat our bread with the peril of our lives because of the sword of the wilderness 10 Our * Ps 119.83 skin was black like an oven because of the ‖ Or terrours or storms terrible famine 11 They ravished the women in Zion and the maids in the cities of Judah 12 Princes are hanged up by their hand the faces of elders were not honoured 13 They took the young men to grinde and the children fell under the wood 14 The elders have ceased from the gate the young men from their musick 15 The joy of our heart is ceased our dance is turned into mourning 16 †Heb. the crown of our head is fallen The crown is faln from our head wo unto us that we have sinned 17 For this our heart is faint for these things our eyes are dim 18 Because of the mountain of Zion which is desolate the foxes walk upon it 19 Thou O LORD * Ps 9.7 c 29.10 and 102.12 and 145.13 remainest for ever thy throne from generation to generation 20 Wherefore dost thou forget us for ever and forsake us †Heb. for â—ength of days so long time 21 * Jer. 31.18 Turn thou us unto thee O LORD and we shall be turned renew our days as of old 22 ‖ Or For wilt thou utterly reject uâ—â— But thou hast utterly rejected us thou art very wroth against us ¶ The book of the Prophet EZEKIEL CHAP. I. 1 The time of Ezekiels prophesie at Chebar 4 His vision of four therubims 15 of the four wheels 2â— and of the glory of GOD. NOw it came to pass in the thirtieth year in the fourth moneth in the fifth day of the moneth as I was among the †Heb. captivity captives by the river of Chebar that the heavens were opened and I saw visions of God 2 In the fifth day of the moneth which was the fifth year of king Jehoiachins captivity 3 The word of the LORD came expresly unto †Heb. Jekezkel Ezekiel the priest the son of Buzi in the land of the Caldeans by the river Chebar and the hand of the LORD was there upon him 4 ¶ And I looked and behold a whirlwind came out of the north a great cloud and a fire †Heb. catching it self infolding it self and a brightness was about it and out of the midst thereof as the colour of amber out of the midst of the fire 5 Also out of the midst thereof came the likeness of four living creatures And this was their appearance They had the likeness of a man 6 And every one had four faces and every one had four wings 7 And their feet were †Heb. a strait foot strait feet and the sole of their feet was like the sole of a calves foot and they sparkled like the colour of burnished brass 8 And they had the hands of a man under their wings on their four sides and they four had their faces and their wings 9 Their wings were joyned one to another they turned not when they went they went every one strait forward 10 As for the likeness of their faces they four had the face of a man and the face of a lion on the right side and they four had the face or an ox on the left side they four also had the face of an eagle 11 Thus were their faces and their wings were ‖ Or artâ—â—â— aâ—â—â— stretched upward two wings of every one were joyned one to another and two covered their bodies 12 And they went every one strait forward whither the spirit was to go they went and they turned not when they went 13 As for the likeness of the living creatures their appearance was like burning coals of fire and like the appearance of lamps it went up and down among the living creatures and the fire was bright and out of the fire went forth lightning 14 And the living creatures ran and returned as the appearance of a flash of lightning 15 ¶ Now as I beheld the living creatures behold one wheel upon the earth by the living creatures with his four faces 16 The apâ—earance of the wheels and their work was like unto the colour of a beryl and they four had one
