confuse_v that_o the_o distinct_a order_n of_o these_o working_n may_v not_o be_v apprehend_v or_o remember_v at_o all_o and_o perhaps_o the_o joyful_a apprehension_n of_o mercy_n may_v make_v the_o sense_n of_o misery_n the_o soon_o forget_v 3._o so_o do_v the_o spirit_n also_o convince_v the_o soul_n insufficiency_n of_o the_o creature_n vanity_n and_o insufficiency_n every_o man_n natural_o be_v a_o flat_a idolater_n our_o heart_n turn_v from_o god_n in_o our_o first_o fall_n and_o ever_o since_o the_o creature_n have_v be_v our_o god_n this_o be_v the_o grand_a sin_n of_o nature_n when_o we_o set_v up_o to_o ourselves_o a_o wrong_a end_n we_o must_v needs_o err_v in_o all_o the_o mean_n god_n the_o creature_n be_v to_o every_o unregenerate_a man_n his_o god_n and_o his_o undervalue_a word_n of_o other_o against_o he_o to_o lay_v all_o that_o he_o have_v at_o the_o foot_n of_o christ_n and_o to_o prefer_v his_o service_n and_o favor_n before_o all_o to_o prepare_v to_o die_v and_o willing_o to_o leave_v all_o to_o come_v to_o christ_n etc._n etc._n this_o outside_n hypocrite_n will_v never_o be_v persuade_v to_o any_o of_o these_o above_o all_o other_o two_o and_o he_o thereupon_o engage_v for_o religion_n as_o the_o right_a way_n and_o side_n with_o it_o as_o a_o party_n in_o a_o faction_n but_o it_o never_o melt_v and_o new_a mould_v his_o heart_n nor_o set_v up_o christ_n there_o in_o full_a power_n and_o authority_n but_o as_o his_o religion_n lie_v most_o in_o his_o opinion_n so_o he_o usual_o run_v from_o opinion_n to_o opinion_n and_o be_v carry_v up_o and_o down_o with_o every_o wind_n of_o doctrine_n by_o the_o sleight_n of_o man_n and_o cunning_a craftiness_n whereby_o they_o lie_v in_o weight_n to_o deceive_v and_o as_o a_o child_n and_o think_v they_o can_v never_o have_v business_n enough_o till_o they_o be_v load_v with_o labour_n and_o clog_v with_o care_n that_o their_o soul_n be_v as_o unfit_a to_o converse_v with_o god_n as_o a_o man_n to_o walk_v with_o a_o mountain_n on_o his_o back_n and_o till_o he_o have_v even_o transform_v his_o soul_n almost_o into_o the_o nature_n of_o his_o drossy_a carcase_n and_o make_v it_o as_o unapt_a to_o soar_v aloft_o as_o his_o body_n be_v to_o leap_v above_o the_o sun_n and_o when_o all_o be_v do_v and_o they_o have_v lose_v that_o heaven_n they_o may_v have_v have_v upon_o earth_n they_o rake_v up_o a_o few_o rot_a argument_n to_o prove_v it_o lawful_a and_o then_o they_o think_v that_o they_o have_v salve_v all_o though_o these_o sot_n will_v not_o do_v so_o for_o their_o body_n nor_o forbear_v their_o eat_n or_o drink_v or_o sleep_v or_o sport_v though_o they_o can_v prove_v it_o lawful_a so_o to_o do_v though_o indeed_o they_o can_v prove_v it_o lawful_a neither_o they_o miss_v not_o the_o pleasure_n of_o this_o heavenly_a life_n if_o they_o can_v but_o quiet_a their_o conscience_n while_o they_o fasten_v upon_o low_a and_o base_a pleasure_n for_o thou_o o_o christian_n who_o have_v taste_v of_o these_o pleasure_n i_o advise_v thou_o as_o thou_o value_v their_o enjoyment_n as_o ever_o thou_o will_v taste_v of_o they_o any_o more_o take_v heed_n of_o this_o gulf_n of_o a_o earthly_a mind_n for_o if_o once_o thou_o come_v to_o this_o that_o thou_o will_v be_v rich_a thou_o fall_v into_o temptation_n and_o a_o snare_n and_o into_o divers_a foolish_a and_o hurtful_a lust_n 21._o it_o be_v saint_n paul_n own_o word_n 1_o tim_n 6.9_o set_a not_o thy_o mind_n as_o saul_n on_o the_o ass_n when_o the_o kingdom_n of_o glory_n be_v before_o but_o convict_a heretic_n or_o scandalous_a one_o and_o that_o for_o the_o most_o part_n after_o due_a admonition_n be_v to_o be_v avoid_v or_o debar_v our_o fellowship_n and_o whereas_o it_o be_v urge_v that_o they_o be_v to_o prove_v their_o interest_n to_o the_o privilege_n which_o they_o lay_v claim_v to_o and_o not_o we_o to_o disprove_v it_o i_o answer_v if_o that_o be_v grant_v yet_o their_o mere_a profess_v to_o repent_v and_o believe_v in_o christ_n be_v a_o sufficient_a evidence_n of_o their_o interest_n to_o church_n member-ship_n and_o admittance_n thereto_o by_o baptism_n incomparable_o wide_a than_o the_o door_n of_o heaven_n and_o christ_n be_v so_o tender_a so_o bountiful_a and_o forward_o to_o convey_v his_o grace_n and_o the_o gospel_n so_o free_a a_o offer_n and_o invitation_n to_o all_o that_o sure_o christ_n will_v keep_v no_o man_n off_o if_o they_o will_v come_v quite_o over_o in_o spirit_n to_o christ_n they_o shall_v be_v welcome_a if_o they_o will_v come_v but_o only_o to_o a_o visible_a profession_n he_o will_v not_o deny_v they_o admittance_n there_o because_o they_o intend_v to_o go_v no_o further_o but_o will_v let_v they_o come_v as_o circumstance_n though_o to_o some_o they_o may_v seem_v small_a thing_n do_v much_o conduce_v to_o our_o hindrance_n or_o our_o help_n 23._o christ_n himself_o think_v it_o not_o vain_a to_o direct_v in_o this_o circumstance_n of_o private_a duty_n mat._n 6.4_o 6_o 18_o if_o in_o private_a prayer_n we_o must_v shut_v our_o door_n upon_o we_o that_o our_o father_n may_v hear_v we_o in_o secret_a be_v the_o society_n of_o godly_a man_n that_o thou_o may_v a_o while_n enjoy_v the_o society_n of_o christ_n if_o a_o student_n can_v study_v in_o a_o crowd_n who_o exercise_v only_o his_o invention_n and_o memory_n much_o less_o when_o thou_o must_v exercise_v all_o the_o power_n of_o thy_o soul_n and_o that_o upon_o a_o object_n so_o far_o above_o nature_n when_o thy_o eye_n be_v fill_v with_o the_o person_n and_o action_n of_o man_n and_o thy_o ear_n with_o their_o discourse_n its_o hard_a then_o to_o have_v thy_o thought_n and_o affection_n free_a for_o this_o duty_n though_o i_o will_v not_o persuade_v thou_o to_o pythagoras_n his_o cave_n nor_o to_o the_o hermit_n wilderness_n nor_o to_o the_o monk_n cell_n yet_o i_o will_v advise_v thou_o to_o frequent_a solitariness_n that_o thou_o may_v sometime_o confer_v with_o christ_n and_o with_o thyself_o as_o well_o as_o with_o other_o we_o be_v flee_v so_o far_o from_o the_o solitude_n of_o superstition_n that_o we_o have_v cast_v off_o the_o solitude_n of_o contemplative_a devotion_n friend_n use_v to_o converse_v most_o familiar_o in_o private_a and_o to_o open_v their_o secret_n and_o let_v out_o retiredness_n so_o also_o that_o thou_o observe_v more_o particular_o what_o place_n and_o posture_n best_o agree_v with_o thy_o spirit_n whether_o within_o door_n or_o without_o whether_o sit_v still_o or_o walk_v i_o believe_v isaac_n example_n in_o this_o also_o will_v direct_v we_o to_o the_o place_n and_o posture_n which_o will_v best_o suit_v with_o most_o as_o it_o do_v with_o i_o use_v to_o a_o solitary_a garden_n that_o even_o judas_n when_o he_o come_v to_o betray_v he_o know_v where_o to_o find_v he_o john_n 18.1_o 2._o and_o though_o he_o take_v his_o disciple_n thither_o with_o he_o yet_o do_v he_o separate_v himself_o from_o they_o for_o more_o secret_a devotion_n luke_n 22.41_o and_o though_o his_o meditation_n be_v not_o direct_o name_v but_o only_o his_o pray_v yet_o it_o be_v very_o clear_o imply_v matth._n 26.38_o 39_o his_o soul_n be_v first_o make_v sorrowful_a with_o the_o bitter_a meditation_n on_o his_o death_n and_o suffering_n and_o then_o he_o pour_v it_o out_o in_o prayer_n mark_v 14.34_o so_o that_o christ_n have_v his_o accustom_a place_n and_o consequent_o accustom_a duty_n and_o so_o must_v we_o christ_n have_v a_o place_n that_o be_v solitary_a whither_o he_o retire_v himself_o even_o from_o his_o own_o disciple_n and_o so_o must_v we_o christ_n meditation_n do_v go_v further_a than_o his_o thought_n they_o affect_v and_o pierce_v his_o heart_n and_o soul_n and_o so_o must_v we_o only_o there_o be_v a_o wide_a difference_n in_o the_o object_n christ_n meditate_v on_o the_o suffering_n that_o our_o sin_n have_v deserve_v that_o the_o wrath_n of_o his_o father_n even_o pass_v through_o his_o thought_n upon_o all_o his_o soul_n but_o the_o meditation_n that_o we_o speak_v of_o be_v on_o the_o glory_n he_o have_v purchase_v that_o the_o love_n of_o the_o father_n and_o the_o joy_n of_o the_o spirit_n may_v enter_v at_o our_o thought_n and_o revive_v our_o affection_n and_o overflow_v our_o soul_n so_o that_o as_o christ_n meditation_n be_v the_o sluice_n or_o floodgate_n to_o let_v in_o hell_n to_o overflow_v his_o affection_n so_o our_o meditation_n shall_v be_v the_o sluice_n to_o let_v in_o heaven_n into_o our_o affection_n 9_o sect_n ix_o so_o much_o concern_v the_o time_n and_o place_n of_o this_o duty_n i_o be_o next_o to_o advise_v thou_o somewhat_o concern_v the_o preparation_n of_o thy_o heart_n the_o success_n of_o the_o work_n do_v much_o depend_v on_o the_o frame_n of_o thy_o heart_n when_o man_n heart_n have_v nothing_o in_o it_o that_o may_v grieve_v the_o spirit_n than_o be_v it_o the_o delightful_a habitation_n of_o his_o maker_n god_n do_v not_o quit_v his_o residence_n there_o till_o man_n do_v expel_v he_o by_o unworthy_a provocation_n there_o grow_v no_o strangeness_n till_o the_o heart_n grow_v sinful_a and_o too_o loathsome_a a_o dungeon_n for_o god_n to_o delight_v in_o and_o be_v this_o soul_n reduce_v to_o its_o former_a innocency_n god_n will_v quick_o return_v to_o his_o former_a habitation_n yea_o so_o far_o as_o it_o be_v renew_v and_o repair_v by_o the_o spirit_n and_o purge_v of_o its_o lust_n and_o beautify_v with_o his_o image_n the_o lord_n will_v yet_o acknowledge_v it_o his_o own_o and_o christ_n will_v manifest_v himself_o unto_o it_o and_o the_o spirit_n will_v take_v it_o for_o his_o temple_n and_o residence_n so_o far_o as_o the_o soul_n be_v qualify_v for_o converse_v with_o god_n so_o far_o it_o do_v actual_o for_o the_o most_o part_n enjoy_v he_o therefore_o with_o all_o diligence_n keep_v thy_o heart_n for_o from_o thence_o be_v the_o of_o thy_o soul_n if_o they_o be_v a_o thousand_o time_n more_o capacious_a and_o active_a than_o they_o be_v and_o therefore_o you_o have_v need_n to_o lay_v by_o all_o other_o thought_n and_o affection_n while_o you_o be_v busy_v here_o if_o thou_o can_v well_o perform_v some_o outward_a duty_n with_o a_o piece_n of_o thy_o heart_n while_o the_o other_o be_v absent_a yet_o this_o above_o all_o i_o be_o sure_a thou_o can_v not_o sure_o if_o thou_o once_o address_v thyself_o to_o the_o business_n indeed_o thou_o will_v be_v as_o the_o covetous_a man_n at_o the_o heap_n of_o gold_n that_o when_o he_o may_v take_v as_o much_o as_o he_o can_v carry_v away_o lament_v that_o he_o be_v able_a to_o bear_v no_o more_o so_o when_o thou_o shall_v get_v into_o the_o mount_n in_o contemplation_n thou_o will_v find_v there_o as_o much_o of_o god_n and_o glory_n as_o thy_o narrow_a heart_n be_v able_a to_o contain_v and_o almost_o nothing_o to_o hinder_v thy_o full_a possession_n but_o only_o the_o uncapableness_n of_o thy_o own_o spirit_n o_o then_o will_v thou_o think_v that_o this_o understanding_n be_v large_a that_o i_o may_v conceive_v more_o that_o these_o affection_n be_v wide_a to_o contain_v more_o it_o be_v more_o my_o own_o unfitness_n than_o any_o thing_n else_o which_o be_v the_o cause_n that_o even_o this_o place_n be_v not_o my_o heaven_n god_n
