grace_n he_o must_v come_v through_o a_o consume_a fire_n and_o when_o he_o preass_v to_o come_v near_o the_o fire_n of_o god_n wrath_n will_v hold_v he_o off_o and_o will_v strike_v out_o and_o burn_v up_o the_o impenitent_a sinner_n as_o fire_n do_v the_o stubble_n so_o it_o be_v a_o hard_a thing_n than_o many_o think_v it_o to_o be_v to_o win_v to_o god_n mercy_n and_o how_o shall_v this_o be_v remidy_v by_o what_o mean_n shall_v we_o get_v through_o this_o wall_n of_o fire_n true_o he_o who_o will_v mean_v to_o pass_v through_o fire_n have_v need_n to_o be_v well_o arm_v the_o man_n who_o preass_v to_o approach_v near_o to_o that_o invialable_a majesty_n who_o can_v abide_v no_o sort_n of_o uncleanness_n and_o will_v draw_v near_o to_o the_o throne_n of_o his_o grace_n must_v be_v well_o arm_v against_o the_o justice_n and_o wrath_n of_o god_n which_o debar_v sinner_n sure_o there_o be_v none_o armour_n in_o the_o world_n that_o can_v preserve_v we_o from_o that_o rage_a and_o consume_a fire_n of_o the_o justice_n and_o wrath_n of_o god_n but_o only_o the_o righteousness_n and_o satisfaction_n of_o jesus_n christ_n let_v a_o man_n use_v all_o the_o mean_n in_o the_o world_n and_o he_o be_v not_o find_v in_o christ_n he_o shall_v have_v none_o access_n to_o come_v through_o the_o justice_n and_o wrath_n of_o god_n to_o the_o throne_n of_o grace_n yea_o his_o soul_n and_o his_o conscience_n must_v be_v sprinkle_v and_o purge_v from_o dead_a work_n with_o that_o blood_n which_o be_v offer_v up_o to_o god_n to_o that_o end_n by_o his_o eternal_a spirit_n to_o get_v a_o gripe_n of_o christ_n as_o ever_o thou_o will_v be_v save_v now_o after_o he_o have_v meet_v this_o objection_n which_o god_n or_o his_o own_o conscience_n in_o god_n cause_n may_v have_v casten_z in_o that_o he_o be_v so_o unworthy_a to_o be_v hear_v by_o a_o humble_a confession_n of_o unworthiness_n and_o by_o flee_v from_o his_o justice_n and_o claim_v to_o his_o great_a possible_a but_o if_o thou_o be_v glorify_v thou_o must_v glorify_v the_o lord_n again_o but_o the_o question_n may_v be_v here_o propon_v wherein_o stand_v our_o glorify_v of_o god_n have_v he_o need_v of_o our_o glorification_n can_v our_o service_n be_v profitable_a to_o he_o can_v our_o well-doing_n extend_v to_o he_o have_v he_o need_v of_o any_o thing_n that_o we_o can_v do_v i_o these_o token_n thou_o may_v rejoice_v then_o he_o go_v forward_o &_o he_o can_v sufficient_o set_v out_o that_o mercy_n which_o he_o find_v he_o know_v not_o how_o nor_o in_o what_o term_n to_o utter_v &_o proclaim_v it_o if_o we_o can_v find_v that_o mercy_n of_o jesus_n we_o will_v see_v that_o the_o heart_n will_v never_o satisfy_v itself_o with_o think_v of_o it_o or_o the_o mouth_n to_o his_o own_o shame_n his_o former_a sinful_a life_n and_o behaviour_n in_o sundry_a degree_n whereas_o before_o say_v he_o i_o be_v a_o blasphemer_n and_o a_o persecuter_n and_o a_o appressor_n look_v if_o he_o think_v much_o of_o himself_o he_o be_v one_o of_o the_o cruel_a persecuter_n that_o ever_o be_v in_o the_o church_n he_o be_v in_o a_o rage_n against_o christ_n behold_v brethren_n paul_n be_v not_o ashamed_a to_o paint_v out_o himself_o in_o his_o own_o colour_n and_o particular_o to_o confess_v his_o former_a evil_a deed_n and_o to_o registrate_n they_o to_o his_o own_o shame_n to_o the_o world_n end_n yea_o you_o shall_v see_v in_o sundry_a place_n where_o he_o speak_v of_o himself_o that_o he_o can_v never_o satisfy_v himself_o in_o aggregate_a his_o own_o offence_n and_o yet_o for_o shame_n will_v not_o confess_v it_o that_o god_n may_v be_v glorify_v that_o soul_n have_v never_o feel_v the_o mercy_n of_o god_n and_o if_o thou_o have_v feel_v that_o mercy_n of_o god_n thy_o heart_n will_v be_v loose_v and_o thy_o mouth_n also_o to_o glorify_v god_n by_o a_o humble_a confession_n moreover_o you_o may_v perceive_v out_o of_o these_o word_n how_o and_o what_o way_n the_o apostle_n find_v the_o strength_n and_o power_n of_o the_o gospel_n he_o find_v a_o power_n in_o it_o but_o not_o at_o the_o first_o instant_n but_o ere_o ever_o he_o feel_v nothing_o they_o may_v be_v compel_v to_o renounce_v themselves_o and_o to_o seek_v to_o be_v find_v in_o jesus_n yea_o after_o the_o lord_n have_v draw_v they_o to_o he_o by_o cross_n the_o lord_n use_v all_o the_o day_n of_o their_o life-time_n to_o expone_fw-la they_o to_o cross_n that_o every_o day_n find_v more_o their_o want_n infirmity_n and_o lack_v of_o comfort_n in_o themselves_o they_o may_v the_o more_o daily_a seek_v and_o strive_v to_o be_v find_v in_o jesus_n who_o can_v supply_v all_o their_o want_n and_o furnish_v every_o thing_n that_o they_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o it_o be_v true_a indeed_o many_o a_o time_n the_o lord_n will_v not_o exercise_v his_o own_o with_o cross_n but_o spare_v they_o &_o let_v they_o have_v liberty_n &_o give_v they_o in_o abundance_n find_v in_o many_o other_o of_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n but_o assoon_o as_o he_o call_v they_o effectual_o he_o lay_v the_o cross_n upon_o they_o that_o see_v their_o weakness_n and_o distrust_v themselves_o they_o may_v learn_v to_o renounce_v themselves_o and_o desire_v to_o find_v the_o power_n and_o life_n of_o jesus_n in_o they_o which_o they_o will_v find_v effectual_a in_o the_o cross_n in_o a_o wonderful_a manner_n look_v 2._o cor._n 11._o the_o lord_n lay_v manifold_a cross_n upon_o paul_n and_o when_o with_o tear_n he_o pray_v that_o the_o lord_n will_v take_v they_o away_o he_o get_v this_o answer_n my_o grace_n be_v sufficient_a for_o thou_o for_o my_o power_n be_v make_v perfect_a through_o thy_o weakness_n mean_v that_o he_o will_v be_v glorify_v and_o make_v paul_n to_o find_v strength_n in_o he_o when_o as_o he_o be_v weak_a in_o himself_o and_o never_o one_o be_v strong_a in_o christ_n but_o when_o he_o feel_v himself_o weak_a therefore_o he_o subjoin_v that_o he_o will_v rejoice_v and_o take_v pleasure_n in_o his_o infirmity_n that_o the_o power_n of_o christ_n may_v dwell_v in_o he_o he_o say_v 2._o cor._n 12._o 8._o 9_o 10._o and_o 2._o cor._n pleasure_n be_v then_o in_o the_o next_o word_n he_o open_v up_o the_o ground_n as_o it_o be_v of_o that_o mercy_n that_o be_v show_v upon_o he_o which_o be_v the_o general_a end_n of_o the_o come_n of_o christ_n into_o this_o world_n and_o from_o the_o general_a he_o conclude_v on_o this_o manner_n christ_n jesus_n be_v come_v into_o the_o world_n to_o save_v sinner_n and_o i_o be_o a_o sinner_n sentence_n they_o shall_v apply_v it_o with_o their_o heart_n alas_o why_o shall_v so_o worthy_a &_o excellent_a sentence_n as_o these_o be_v pass_v away_o without_o any_o attention_n or_o preparation_n on_o our_o part_n it_o be_v true_a brethren_n we_o shall_v never_o come_v to_o y_z e_z hear_v of_o any_o part_n of_o the_o word_n without_o preparation_n we_o shall_v not_o come_v to_o the_o holy_a congregation_n like_o as_o many_o swine_n without_o have_v any_o regard_n what_o we_o be_v do_v but_o we_o shall_v come_v with_o preparation_n &_o not_o only_o with_o a_o ear_n prepare_v but_o with_o a_o hart_n prepare_v and_o when_o thou_o interest_n into_o the_o church_n thou_o shall_v say_v the_o lord_n prepare_v my_o heart_n that_o i_o may_v receive_v some_o sponke_n of_o grace_n so_o a_o preparation_n be_v requisite_a in_o general_a to_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n but_o yet_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n will_v be_v better_o prepare_v for_o the_o hear_n of_o such_o notable_a sentence_n as_o this_o be_v christ_n be_v come_v into_o the_o world_n to_o save_v sinner_n they_o require_v a_o more_o singular_a preparation_n there_o be_v no_o doubt_n he_o speak_v through_o the_o full_a assurance_n of_o faith_n and_o that_o which_o he_o speak_v he_o assure_o believe_v &_o therefore_o he_o speak_v of_o it_o when_o we_o speak_v of_o that_o grace_n the_o heart_n shall_v rise_v with_o a_o assurance_n look_v to_o the_o prophet_n david_n with_o what_o assurance_n he_o speak_v of_o it_o i_o believe_v
6._o and_o it_o be_v only_o such_o person_n as_o these_o who_o be_v of_o a_o contrite_a spirit_n who_o tremble_v at_o the_o lord_n word_n that_o do_v get_v mercy_n and_o salvation_n then_o in_o a_o word_n a_o humble_a &_o penitent_a sinner_n how_o great_a so_o ever_o his_o sin_n be_v he_o â—all_n get_v salvation_n so_o there_o be_v nothing_o that_o hinder_v thou_o from_o mercy_n and_o salvation_n but_o the_o maliciousness_n of_o thy_o own_o heart_n it_o be_v not_o adultery_n it_o be_v not_o murder_n it_o be_v not_o blasphemy_n or_o oppreslion_n that_o deprive_v thou_o of_o y_z t_o salvation_n but_o the_o hardness_n of_o thy_o heart_n that_o can_v repent_v if_o thou_o have_v a_o contrite_a heart_n and_o can_v say_v woe_n be_v i_o that_o i_o have_v offend_v so_o sweet_a &_o gracious_a a_o god_n thou_o shall_v get_v mercy_n it_o be_v a_o heavy_a &_o jamentable_a case_n that_o sinner_n shall_v want_v mercy_n for_o fault_n of_o repentance_n when_o he_o have_v set_v down_o this_o general_a sentence_n whereon_o he_o ground_v the_o mercy_n of_o god_n that_o be_v show_v on_o he_o that_o christ_n come_v in_o the_o world_n to_o save_v sinner_n he_o come_v to_o the_o particular_a application_n &_o he_o subjoin_v but_o i_o be_o the_o first_o sinner_n in_o the_o world_n the_o conclusion_n be_v understand_v therefore_o christ_n jesus_n come_v in_o the_o world_n to_o sa_o he_o may_v apply_v mercy_n &_o salvation_n to_o himself_o for_o without_o this_o application_n these_o general_a sentence_n can_v serve_v for_o no_o use_n it_o be_v true_a indeed_o brethren_n science_n of_o these_o general_a sentence_n that_o be_v contain_v in_o y_z e_z scripture_n be_v very_o good_a yea_o the_o knowledge_n of_o they_o be_v most_o necessary_a for_o no_o man_n can_v have_v conscience_n without_o knowledge_n but_o it_o be_v as_o true_a on_o the_o other_o part_n that_o science_n and_o knowledge_n avail_v not_o without_o conscience_n apply_v particular_o to_o a_o man_n soul_n the_o thing_n that_o he_o know_v as_o when_o man_n know_v these_o general_a sentence_n set_v down_o in_o the_o word_n if_o they_o apply_v they_o not_o to_o themselves_o the_o knowledge_n of_o they_o can_v serve_v to_o no_o purpose_n as_o for_o example_n when_o a_o man_n know_v this_o general_a sentence_n of_o the_o law_n curse_v be_v every_o man_n that_o continue_v not_o in_o every_o thy_o application_n when_o thou_o hear_v by_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n salvation_n offer_v to_o sinner_n take_v not_o first_o to_o thyself_o salvation_n but_o first_o take_v sin_n and_o death_n then_o take_v life_n and_o apply_v it_o to_o thyself_o rejoice_v not_o first_o at_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o glad_a tithinge_n of_o salvation_n but_o first_o conceive_v a_o displeasure_n then_o let_v joy_n arise_v out_o of_o displeasure_n for_o joy_n of_o salvation_n must_v arise_v out_o of_o the_o displeasure_n through_o the_o fear_n of_o damnation_n it_o shall_v pass_v thy_o power_n to_o find_v joy_n through_o the_o sense_n of_o mercy_n and_o salvation_n before_o thou_o find_v sadness_n &_o heaviness_n of_o heart_n through_o the_o sense_n of_o sin_n and_o damnation_n even_o as_o sorrowful_a and_o out_o of_o that_o heaviness_n arise_v the_o joy_n and_o the_o heavy_a the_o heart_n be_v the_o great_a the_o joy_n be_v will_v to_o god_n we_o have_v this_o sorrow_n &_o sadness_n and_o the_o sense_n of_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n in_o our_o heart_n for_o sin_n for_o the_o sad_a heart_n for_o sin_n will_v get_v the_o great_a joy_n &_o evermore_o the_o great_a sadness_n the_o great_a joy_n if_o our_o heart_n be_v grieve_v and_o weary_a with_o the_o sight_n of_o sin_n we_o shall_v have_v such_o a_o spiritual_a joy_n as_o the_o world_n know_v not_o and_o this_o joy_n be_v as_o sure_a a_o earnest-penny_n of_o that_o joy_n of_o heaven_n as_o ever_o be_v and_o he_o that_o have_v that_o joy_n that_o arise_v from_o that_o sorrow_n in_o the_o hart_n for_o sin_n he_o have_v a_o sufficient_a warrant_n of_o that_o joy_n in_o heaven_n and_o he_o that_o have_v not_o that_o joy_n he_o have_v no_o warrant_n of_o that_o heavenly_a joy_n therefore_o christ_n say_v bless_a be_v they_o that_o mourn_v for_o they_o shall_v be_v comfort_v mat._n 5._o 4._o now_o in_o this_o world_n this_o joy_n be_v mix_v with_o tear_n but_o than_o it_o shall_v be_v a_o perfect_a joy_n
come_v in_o the_o world_n &_o have_v ascend_v to_o glory_n alas_o this_o be_v not_o perceive_v and_o in_o myself_o i_o can_v see_v it_o as_o i_o will_v &_o the_o most_o godly_a complain_v that_o they_o can_v see_v this_o effectualness_n of_o christ_n glory_n the_o cause_n be_v the_o deadness_n that_o abide_v in_o we_o sin_n can_v be_v get_v out_o of_o this_o world_n till_o the_o lord_n come_v again_o it_o dwell_v in_o us._n and_o reign_v in_o the_o world_n &_o the_o devil_n the_o prince_n of_o this_o world_n reign_v by_o it_o for_o where_o sin_n reign_v he_o reign_v yea_o it_o oppress_v y_o e_o godly_a heart_n that_o they_o can_v scarce_o feel_v in_o themselves_o this_o renovation_n so_o weighty_a be_v sin_n who_o see_v it_o there_o be_v a_o glimmer_n of_o this_o new_a creation_n but_o who_o have_v this_o glimmer_n none_o but_o that_o new_a soul_n a_o unregenerate_a man_n never_o see_v this_o regeneration_n neither_o in_o himself_o nor_o in_o other_o and_o he_o can_v suffer_v to_o hear_v of_o a_o regenerate_a &_o sanctify_a man_n he_o will_v laugh_v as_o though_o there_o can_v not_o be_v such_o a_o thing_n as_o regeneration_n because_o the_o scorner_n himself_o be_v unrenew_v therefore_o he_o can_v weigh_v god_n grace_n in_o other_o so_o long_o as_o thou_o be_v unregenerate_a thou_o can_v not_o but_o scorn_v regeneration_n yea_o and_o persecute_v the_o regenerate_a man_n and_o so_o rash_a thy_o head_n against_o a_o wall_n for_o the_o lord_n have_v make_v he_o inviolable_a and_o the_o temple_n of_o his_o spirit_n and_o therefore_o he_o shall_v destroy_v thou_o that_o be_v the_o unregenerate_a man_n yea_o and_o destroy_v shall_v every_o man_n be_v that_o dash_v himself_o against_o the_o church_n of_o jesus_n that_o be_v the_o renew_a body_n without_o this_o assurance_n of_o mercy_n he_o will_v never_o think_v they_o comfortable_a so_o there_o be_v a_o sure_a ground_n the_o faith_n of_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n first_o of_o all_o be_v ever_o relative_a to_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n and_o that_o be_v the_o first_o object_n of_o faith_n indeed_o have_v get_v a_o gripe_n of_o mercy_n than_o it_o extend_v to_o all_o the_o rest_n but_o before_o that_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o god_n that_o it_o can_v rest_v upon_o you_o see_v by_o experience_n when_o the_o law_n be_v preach_v there_o be_v little_a allurance_n of_o the_o heart_n doctrine_n of_o extreme_a justice_n and_o his_o justice_n do_v nothing_o but_o terrify_v the_o soul_n but_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o euangell_n be_v a_o doctrine_n of_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n it_o with_o such_o a_o necessity_n that_o except_o he_o and_o whole_a mankind_n be_v regenerate_v there_o be_v none_o of_o they_o that_o shall_v see_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n and_o this_o he_o do_v with_o a_o great_a asseveration_n say_v very_o very_o nicodemus_n hear_v and_o fear_v that_o heavy_a denunciation_n of_o banishment_n from_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n but_o not_o understand_v this_o old_a man_n can_v enter_v into_o his_o mother_n womb_n again_o christ_n answer_v and_o answer_v insist_v in_o that_o proposition_n of_o regeneration_n urge_v he_o again_o with_o a_o necessity_n of_o the_o same_o regeneration_n only_o he_o add_v to_o that_o that_o he_o speak_v before_o the_o manner_n and_o way_n of_o this_o beget_n to_o wit_n of_o water_n and_o the_o spirit_n it_o be_v not_o a_o a_o fleshly_a or_o corrupt_a creature_n but_o a_o spiritual_a and_o heavenly_a creature_n this_o he_o set_v not_o down_o simple_o but_o he_o set_v it_o down_o by_o way_n of_o comparison_n with_o the_o fleshlie_o generation_n to_o the_o end_n that_o nicodemus_n and_o all_o man_n see_v the_o corruption_n of_o the_o flesh_n they_o shall_v esteem_v the_o more_o high_o of_o that_o spiritual_a generation_n and_o he_o say_v that_o the_o thing_n beget_v of_o the_o flesh_n be_v flesh_n that_o be_v as_o the_o flesh_n a_o corrupt_a mass_n of_o flesh_n and_o blood_n can_v beget_v but_o corrupt_a flesh_n even_o so_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n can_v begâ—tte_v but_o that_o that_o be_v spiritual_a and_o heavenly_a and_o thus_o yeesâ—e_v the_o meaning_n of_o this_o place_n but_o
