unite_v more_o to_o christ_n then_o before_o and_o so_o partake_v more_o of_o the_o virtue_n of_o christ_n and_o so_o the_o work_n of_o mortification_n and_o vivification_n be_v more_o increase_v i'faith_o than_o concurre_v not_o to_o the_o first_o act_n of_o mortification_n and_o vivification_n but_o it_o concurre_v to_o the_o increase_n and_o augmentation_n of_o both_o the_o second_o mean_n or_o cause_n that_o concurre_v not_o to_o the_o first_o act_n but_o to_o the_o increase_n of_o mortification_n and_o vification_n it_o be_v the_o lord_n supper_n for_o that_o serve_v as_o the_o ancient_a father_n call_v it_o as_o physic_v receive_v into_o the_o body_n not_o only_o for_o the_o check_v and_o curb_v and_o expel_v of_o obnoxious_a humour_n but_o for_o the_o restore_n of_o health_n by_o consequent_a so_o the_o lord_n supper_n due_o receive_v it_o serve_v as_o a_o mean_n to_o abate_v sinful_a lust_n in_o we_o if_o it_o be_v worthy_o receive_v i_o say_v not_o by_o a_o dead_a faith_n he_o that_o receive_v it_o worthy_o it_o be_v a_o mean_n to_o mortify_v sin_n in_o he_o and_o so_o by_o consequent_a for_o the_o quicken_a of_o he_o to_o a_o new_a life_n the_o life_n of_o grace_n though_o not_o to_o the_o first_o act_n yet_o to_o the_o increase_n of_o that_o former_a life_n that_o be_v in_o he_o it_o be_v call_v meat_n now_o as_o the_o meat_n that_o we_o receive_v can_v avail_v to_o beget_v a_o new_a life_n in_o a_o man_n put_v meat_n into_o the_o mouth_n of_o a_o dead_a man_n it_o do_v not_o quicken_v he_o put_v meat_n into_o the_o mouth_n of_o a_o live_a man_n and_o it_o increase_v his_o life_n so_o in_o the_o lord_n supper_n worthy_o receive_v it_o be_v not_o a_o mean_n to_o work_v the_o first_o act_n of_o mortificatification_n and_o vivification_n but_o when_o once_o mortification_n and_o vivification_n be_v begin_v when_o there_o be_v a_o new_a life_n in_o a_o man_n this_o serve_v as_o spiritual_a food_n to_o strengthen_v and_o increase_v that_o life_n let_v this_o suffice_v for_o the_o answer_n to_o the_o question_n propose_v if_o christ_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o death_n to_o sin_n and_o of_o the_o life_n of_o grace_n how_o he_o be_v the_o cause_n he_o be_v the_o cause_n meritorious_a the_o exemplary_a the_o moral_a and_o efficient_a cause_n he_o be_v the_o cause_n efficient_a both_o by_o his_o spirit_n by_o his_o word_n and_o by_o baptism_n and_o then_o he_o be_v the_o cause_n efficient_a though_o not_o of_o the_o first_o act_n of_o mortification_n and_o vivification_n yet_o of_o the_o increase_n of_o they_o that_o be_v by_o faith_n and_o the_o lord_n supper_n i_o come_v brief_o to_o the_o use_n well_o if_o through_o christ_n alone_o use_v use_v and_o by_o virtue_n derive_v from_o he_o as_o a_o head_n we_o die_v to_o sin_n and_o live_v to_o grace_n than_o this_o serve_v to_o stir_v we_o all_o up_o to_o desire_v and_o endeavour_v to_o be_v in_o christ_n that_o we_o may_v partake_v of_o the_o virtue_n of_o christ_n whereby_o sin_n may_v be_v kill_v in_o we_o and_o mortify_v and_o whereby_o we_o may_v be_v quicken_v to_o the_o life_n of_o grace_n it_o be_v the_o desire_n of_o constantine_n and_o the_o glory_n of_o he_o too_o he_o profess_v that_o he_o have_v rather_o be_v a_o member_n of_o christ_n than_o the_o lord_n and_o king_n of_o the_o empire_n now_o if_o we_o desire_v to_o partake_v of_o the_o virtue_n of_o christ_n our_o first_o care_n must_v be_v to_o labour_v to_o be_v in_o christ_n for_o look_v as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o plant_n it_o partake_v not_o of_o the_o virtue_n of_o the_o stock_n till_o it_o be_v graft_v into_o it_o and_o then_o it_o do_v so_o it_o be_v with_o we_o if_o we_o be_v graft_v into_o christ_n we_o shall_v partake_v of_o the_o virtue_n of_o christ_n by_o which_o sin_n will_v be_v mortify_v in_o we_o and_o we_o shall_v be_v quicken_v to_o a_o new_a life_n of_o grace_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o natural_a body_n the_o member_n partake_v not_o of_o the_o virtue_n of_o the_o head_n unless_o they_o be_v unite_v to_o the_o head_n so_o it_o be_v with_o we_o except_o we_o be_v unite_v to_o christ_n through_o a_o true_a and_o lively_a faith_n which_o be_v the_o sinew_n and_o ligament_n by_o which_o we_o be_v tie_v to_o christ_n we_o do_v not_o partake_v of_o the_o virtue_n of_o christ_n indeed_o many_o of_o we_o desire_v the_o favour_n of_o great_a one_o to_o receive_v benefit_n from_o they_o but_o there_o be_v no_o man_n no_o monarch_n on_o the_o earth_n by_o who_o we_o can_v reap_v that_o benefit_n as_o we_o may_v by_o christ_n if_o we_o be_v in_o he_o we_o acknowledge_v that_o king_n be_v lord_n of_o life_n and_o death_n yet_o they_o be_v not_o lord_n of_o this_o life_n and_o death_n all_o the_o king_n and_o monarch_n in_o the_o world_n though_o they_o may_v take_v away_o the_o life_n of_o their_o subject_n yet_o they_o can_v take_v away_o the_o life_n of_o one_o lust_n or_o sin_n though_o perhaps_o they_o may_v give_v life_n to_o a_o man_n that_o be_v not_o to_o take_v it_o away_o when_o they_o may_v yet_o they_o can_v give_v a_o new_a life_n to_o a_o man_n they_o can_v work_v this_o new_a life_n the_o life_n of_o grace_n therefore_o it_o shall_v be_v our_o desire_n and_o endeavour_v to_o be_v in_o christ_n that_o we_o may_v partake_v of_o the_o virtue_n of_o christ_n since_o it_o be_v only_o he_o from_o who_o the_o
