He assureth them of the certainty of Christs coming to judgement against those scorners who dispute against it 8 warning the godly for the long patience of God to hasten their repentance 10 He describeth also the manner how the world shall be destroyed 11 exhorting them from the expectation thereof to all holiness of life 15 and again to think the patience of God to tend to their salvation as Paul wrote to them in his epistles THis second epistle beloved I now write unto you in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance 2 That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour 3 * 1 Tim. 4. â— 2 Tim. 3.1 Jude 18. Knowing this first that there shall come in the last days scoffers walking after their own lusts 4 And saying Where is the promise of his coming For since the fathers fell asleep all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation 5 For this they willingly are ignorant of that by the word of God the heavens were of old and the earth †Gr consisting standing out of the water and in the water 6 Whereby the world that then was being overflowed with water perished 7. XIII 1 They were not excused that worshipped any of Gods works 10 But most wretched are they that worship the works of mens â—ands SUrely vain are all men by nature who are ignorant of God and * Rom. 1.19 could not out of the good things that are seen know him that is neither by considering the works did they acknowledge the work-master 2 * Deu. 4.19 17.3 But deemed either fire or wind or the swift air or the circle of the stars or the violent water or the lights of heaven to be the gods which govern the world 3 With whose beauty if they being delighted took them to be gods let them know how much better the Lord of them is for the first authour of beauty hath created them 4 But if they were astonished at their power and vertue let them understand by them how much mightier he is that made them 5 For by the greatness and beauty of the creatures proportionably the maker of them is seen 6 But yet for this they are the less to be blamed for they peradventure err seeking God and desirous to finde him 7 For being * Rom. 1.21 conversant in his works they ‖ Or seek search him diligently and beleeve their sight because the things are beautiful that are seen 8 Howbeit neither are they to be pardoned 9 For if they were able to know so much that they could aim at the world how did they not sooner finde out the Lord thereof 10 But miserable are they and in dead things is their hope who called them gods which are the works of mens hands gold and silver to shew art in and resemblances of beasts or a stone good for nothing the work of an ancient hand 11 * If. 44.13 Now a ‖ Or timber-wright carpenter that felleth â—â—mber after he hath sawen down a tree meet for the purpose and take â—â—â—ff all the bark skilfully round about and hath wrought it handsomely and made a vessel thereof fit for the service of mans life 12 And after spending the ‖ Or chipâ— refuse of his work to dress his meat hath filled himself 13 And taking the very refuse among those which served to no use being a crooked piece of wood and full of knots hath carved it diligently when he had nothing else to do and formed it by the skill of his understanding and fashioned it to the image of a man 14 Or made it like some vile beast laying it over with vermilion and with paint colouring it red and covering every spot therein 15 And when he had made a convenient room for it set it in a wall and made it fast with iron 16 For he provided for it that it might not fall knowing that it was unable to help it self for it is an image and hath need of help 17 Then maketh he prayer for his goods for his wife and children and is not ashamed to speak to that which hath no life 18 For health he calleth upon that which is weak for life prayeth to that which is dead for aid humbly beseecheth †Gr. that hath no experience at all that which hath least means
foreshew this lest they should perish and not know why they were afflicted 20 Yea the tasting of death touched the righteous also and there was a destruction of the * Num. 16.46 multitude in the wilderness but the wrath endured not long 21 For then the blameless man made haste and stood forth to defend them and bringing the shield of his proper ministery even prayer and the propitiation of incense set himself against the wrath and so brought the calamity to an end declaring that he was thy servant 22 So he overcame the destroyer not with strength of body nor force of arms but with a word subdued he him that punished alledging the oaths and covenants made with the fathers 23 For when the dead were now fain down by heaps one upon another standing between he ‖ Or out off stayed the wrath and parted the way to the living 24 * Ex. 28.6 9.36 For in the long garment was the whole world and in the four rows of the stones was the glory of the fathers graven and thy Majesty upon the diadem of his head 25 Unto these the destroyer gave place and was afraid of them for it was enough that they onely tasted of the wrath CHAP. XIX 1 Why God showed no mercy to the Egyptians 5 and how wonderfully be dealt with his people 14 The Egyptians were worst then the Sodomites 18 The wonderful agreement of the creatures to serve Gods people AS for the ungodly wrath came upon them without mercy unto the end for he knew before what they would do 2 How that having given them leave to depart and sent them hastily away they would repent and pursue them 3 For whilest they were yet mourning and making lamentation at the graves of the dead they added another foolish device and pursued them as fugitives whom they had ‖ Or cast out by intreaty intreated to be gone 4 For the destiny whereof they were worthy drew them unto this end and made them forget the things that had already hapned that they might fulfil the punishment which was wanting to their torments 5 And that thy people might pass a wonderful way but they might finde a strange death 6 For the whole creature in his proper kinde was fashioned again anew serving the peculiar commandments that were given unto them that thy children might be kept without hurt 7 As namely a cloud shadowing â—â—e camp and where water stood before dry land appeared and 〈◊〉 of the Red sea a way without impediment and out of the viâ—â—â—â—t stream a green field 8 Wherethrough all the people wâ—â—â— that were defended with thy hand seeing thy marvellous strange wonders 9 For they went at large like horses and leaped like lambs praising thee O Lord who hadst delivered them 10 For they were yet mindful of the things that were done while they sojourned in the strange land how the ground brought forth ‖ Or lice flies in stead of cattel and how the river cast up a multitude of frogs in stead of fishes 11 But afterwards they saw a new generation of fowls when being led with their appetite they asked delicate meats 12 For quails came up unto them from the sea for their ‖ Or comfort contentment 13 And punishments came upon the sinners not without former signs by the force of thunders for they suffered justly according to their own wickedness insomuch as they used a more hard and hateful behaviour towards strangers 14 For the Sodomites did not receive those whom they knew not when they came but these brought friends into bondage that had well deserved of them 15 And not onely so but peradventure some respect shall be had of those because they used strangers not friendly 16 But these very grievously afflicted them whom they had received with feastings and were already made partakers of the same laws with them 17 Therefore even with blindness were these stricken as those were at the doors of the righteous man when being compassed about with horrible great darkness every one sought the passage of his own doors 18 For the elements were changed †Or. by themselves in themselves by a kinde of harmony like as in a psaltery notes change the name of the tune and yet are always sounds which may well be perceived by the sight of the things that have been done 19 For earthly things were turned into watery and the things that before swam in the water now went upon the ground 20 The fire had power in the water forgetting his own vertue and the water forgat his own quenching nature 21 On the other side the flames wasted not the flesh of the corruptible living things though they walked therein neither melted they the icie kinde of heavenly meat that was of nature apt to melt 22 For in all things O Lord thou didst magnify thy people and glorify them neither didst thou lightly regard them but didst assist them in every time and place The Wisdom of JESVS the son of SIRACH or ECCLESIASTICUS A prologue made by an uncertain Author Some reser this prologue to Athanasius because it is found in his Synopsis THis Jesus was the son of Sirach and grandchilde to Jesus of the same name with him this man therefore lived in the latter times after the people had been led away captive and called home again and almost after all he prophets Now his grandfather Jesus as he himself witnesseth was a man of great diligence and wisdom among the Hebrews who did not onely gather the grave and short sentences of wise men that had been before him but himself also uttered some of his own full of much understanding and wisdom When as therefore the first Jesus died leaving this book almost ‖ Or collected perfected Sirach his son receiving it after him left it to his own son Jesus who having gotten it into his hands compiled it all orderly into one volume and called it Wisdom intituling it both by his own name his fathers name and his grandfathers alluring the hearer by the very name of Wisdom to have a greater love to the study of this book It containeth therefore wise sayings dark sentences and parables and certain particular ancient godly stories of men that pleased God also his prayer and song moreover what benefits God had vouchsafed his people and what plagues he had heaped upon their enemies This Jesus did imitate Solomon and was no less famous for wisdom and learning both being indeed a man of great learning so reputed also The prologue of the Wisdom of JESUS the son of SIRACH WHereas many and great things have been delivered unto us by the law and the prophets and by others that have followed their steps for the which things Israel ought to be commended for learning and wisdom and whereof not onely the readers must needs become skilful themselves but also they that desire to learn be able to profit them which are ‖ Or of

X. 2 Christ disputeth with the Pharisees touching divorcement 13 blesseth the children that are brought unto him 17 resolveth a rich man how he may inherit â—â—fe everlasting 23 telleth his disciples of the danger of riches 28 promiseth rewards to them that forsake any thing for the gospel 32 foretelleth his death and resurrection 35 biddeth the two ambitious suiters to think rather of suffering with him 45 and restoreth to Bartimeus his sight ANd * Mat. 19.1 he arose from thence and cometh into the coasts of Judea by the farther side of Jordan and the people resort unto him again and as he was wont he taught them again 2 ¶ And the Pharisees came to him and asked him Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife tempting him 3 And he answered said unto them What did Moses command you 4 And they said Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement and to put her away 5 And Jesus answered and said unto them For the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept 6 But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female 7 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and cleave to his wife 8 And they twain shall be one flesh so then they are no more twain but one flesh 9 What therefore God hath joyned together let no man put asunder 10 And in the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter 11 And he said unto them * Mat. 5.32 19.9 Whosoever shall put away his wife and marry another committeth adultery against her 12 And if a woman shall put away her husband and be married to another she committeth adultery 13 ¶ * Mat. 19.13 And they brought young children to him that he should touch them and his disciples rebuked those that brought them 14 But when Jesus saw it he was much displeased and said unto them Suffer the little children to come unto me and forbid them not for of such is the kingdom of God 15 Verily I say unto you Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little childe he shall not enter therein 16 And he took them up in his arms put his hands upon them and blessed them 17 ¶ * Mat. 19.15 And when he was gone forth into the way there came one running and kneeled to him and asked him Good Master what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life 18 And Jesus said unto him Why callest thou me good there is none good but one that is God 19 Thou knowest the commandments Do not commit adultery Do not kill Do not steal Do not bear false witness Defraud not Honour thy father and mother 20 And he answered and said unto him Master all these have I observed from my youth 21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him and said unto him One thing thou lackest go thy way sell whatsoever thou hast and give to the poor and thou shalt have treasure in heaven and come take up the cross and follow me 22 And he was sad at that saying and went away grieved for he had great possessions 23 ¶ And Jesus looked round about and saith unto his disciples How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! 24 And the disciples were astonished at his words But Jesus answereth again and saith unto them Children how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle then for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God 26 And they were astonished out of measure saying among themselves Who then can be saved 27 And Jesus looking upon them saith With men it is impossible but not with God for with God all things are possible 28 ¶ * Mat. 19.27 Then Peter began to say unto him Lo we have left all and have followed thee 29 And Jesus answered and said Verily I say unto you There is no man that hath left house or brethren or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands for my sake and the gospels 30 But he shall receive an hundred-sold now in this time houses and brethren and sisters and mothers and children and lands with persecutions and in the world to come eternal life 31 * Mat. 19.30 But many that are first shall be last and the last first 32 ¶ * Mat. 20.17 And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem and Jesus went before them and they were amazed and as they followed they were afraid And he took again the twelve and began to tell them what things should happen unto him 33 Saying Behold we go up to Jerusalem and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests and unto the scribes and they shall condemn him to death and shall deliver him to the Gentiles 34 And they shall mock him and shall scourge him and shall spit upon him and shall kill him and the third day he shall rise again 35 ¶ * Mat. 20 2â— And James and John the sons of Zebedee come unto him saying Master we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire 36 And he said unto them What would ye that I should do for you 37 They said unto him Grant unto us that we may sit one on thy right hand and the other on thy left hand in thy glory 38 But Jesus said unto them Ye know not

XI 1 Christ raiseth Lazarus four days buried 4â— Many Jews beleeve 47 The bâ—â—h priests and Pharisees gather a council against Christ 49 Caiaphas prophesieth 54 Jesus hid himself 55 At the pass-over they enquire after him and lay wait for him NOw a certain man was sick named Lazarus of Bethany the town of Mary and her sister Martha 2 * Mat. 26.7 It was that Mary which anoâ—nted the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair whose brother Lazarus was sick 3 Therefore his sisters sent unto him saying Lord behold he whom thou lovest is sick 4 When Jesus heard that he said This sickness is not unto death but for the glory of God that the Son of God might be glorified thereby 5 Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus 6 When he had heard therefore that he was sick he abode two days still in the same place where he was 7 Then after that saith he to his disciples Let us go into Judea again 8 His disciples say unto him Master the Jews of late sought to stone thee and goest thou thither again 9 Jesus answered Are there not twelve hours in the day If any man walk in the day he stumbleth not because he seeth the light of this world 10 But if a man walk in the night he stumbleth because there is no light in him 11 These things said he and after that he saith unto them Our friend Lazarus sleepeth but I go that I may awake him out of sleep 12 Then said his disciples Lord if he sleep he shall do well 13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep 14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly Lazarus is dead 15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there to the intent ye may beleeve nevertheless let us go unto him 16 Then said Thomas which is called Didymus unto his fellow-disciples Let us also go that XVI 1 Christ comforteth his disciples against tribulation by the promise of the holy Ghost and by his resurrection and ascension 23 assureth their prayers made in his name to be acceptable to his Father 33 Peace in Christ and in the world afflâ—ction THese things have I spoken unto you that ye should not be offended 2 They shall put you out of the synagogues yea the time cometh that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service 3 And these things will they do unto you because they have not known the Father nor me 4 But these things have I told you that when the time shall come ye may remember that I told you of them And these things I said not unto you at the beginning because I was with you 5 But now I go my way to him that sent me and none of you asketh me Whither goest thou 6 But because I have said these things unto you sorrow hath filled your heart 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth it is expedient for you that I go away for if I go not away the Comforter will not come unto you but if I dâ—part I will send him unto you 8 And when he is come he will ‖ Or â—â—nomce reprove the world of sin and of righteousness and of judgement 9 Of sin because they beleeve not on me 10 Of righteousness because I go to my Father ye see me no more 11 Of judgement because the prince of this world is judged 12 I have yet many things to say unto you but ye cannot bear them now 13 Howbeit when he the Spirit of truth is come he will guide you into all truth for he shall not speak of himself but whatsoever he shall hear that shall he speak and he will shew you things to come 14 He shall glorifie me for he shall receive of mine and shall shew it unto you 15 All things that the Father hath are mine therefore said I that he shall take of mine and shall shew it unto you 16 A little while and ye shall not see me and again a little while and ye shall â—â—e me because I go to the Father 17 Then said some of his disciples among themselves What is this that he saith unto us A little while and ye shall not see me and again a little while and ye shall see me and Because I go to the Father 18 They said therefore What is this that he saith A little while we cannot tell what he saith 19 Now Jesus knew that they were desirous to ask him and said unto them Do ye enquire among your selves of that I said A little while and ye shall not see me and again a little while and ye shall see me 20 Verâ—ly verily I say unto you that ye shall weep and lament but the world shall rejoyce and ye shall be sorrowful but your sorrow shall be turned into joy 21 A woman when she is in travel hath sorrow because her hour is come but assoon as she is delivered of the childe shâ— remembreth no more the anguish for joy that a man is born into the world 22 And ye now therefore have sorrow but I will see you again and your heart shall rejoyce and your joy no man taketh from you 23 And in the day ye shall ask me nothing * Mat. 7.7 Verily verily I say unto you Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name he will give it you 24 Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name ask and ye shall receive that your joy may be full 25 These things have I spoken unto you in ‖ Or parables proverbs the time cometh when I shall no more speak unto you in ‖ Or parables proverbs but I shall shew you plainly of the Father 26 At that day ye shall ask in my name and I say not unto you that I will pray the Father for you 27 For the Father himself loveth you because ye have loved me and have beleeved that I came out from God 28 I came forth from the Father and am come into the world again I leave the world and go to the Father 29 His disciples said unto him Lo now speakest thou plainly and speakest no ‖ Or parable proverb 30 Now are we sure that thou knowest all things and needest not that any man should ask thee by this we beleeve that thou camest forth from God 31 Jesus answered them Do ye now beleeve 32 * Mat. 26.31 Behold the hour cometh yea is now come that ye shall be scattered every man to ‖ Or his own home his own and shall leave me alone and yet I am not alone because the Father is with me 33 These things I have spoken unto you that in me ye might have peace In the world ye shall have tribulation but be of good cheer I have overcome the world CHAP. XVII 1 Christ prayeth to his Father to glorifie him 6 to preserve his apostles 11 in unity 17 and truth 20 to glorifie them and all other beleevers with him in heaven THese words spake Jesus and lift up his eyes to heaven and said Father the hour is come glorifie thy Son that thy Son also may glorifie thee 2 * Mat. 28.18 As thou hast given him power over all flesh that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him 3 And this is life eternal that they might know thee the onely true God and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent 4 I have glorified thee on the earth I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do 5 And now O Father glorifie thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was 6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world thine they were and thou gavest them me and they have kept thy word 7 Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee 8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me and they have received them * Chap. 16.27 and have known surely that I came out from thee and they have beleeved that thou didst send me 9 I pray for them I pray not for the world but for them which thou hast given me for they are thine 10 And all mine are thine thine are mine
I am glorified in them 11 And now I am no more in the world but these are in the world and I come to thee Holy father keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me that they may be one as we are 12 While I was with them in the world I kept them in thy name those that thou gavest me I have kept and none of them is lost but the son of perdition * Psal 103 8. that the scripture might be fulfilled 13 And now come I to thee and these things I speak in the world that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves 14 I have given them thy word and the world hath hated them because they are not of the world even as I am not of the world 15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil 16 They are not of the world even as I am not of the world 17 Sanctifie them through thy truth thy word is truth 18 As thou hast sent me into the world even so have I also sent them into the world 19 And for their sakes I sanctifie my self that they also might be ‖ Or truly sanctified sanctified through the truth 20 Neither pray I for these alone but for them also which shall beleeve on me through their word 21 That they all may be one as thou Father art in me and I in thee that they also may be one in us that the world may beleeve that thou hast sent me 22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them that they may be one even as we are one 23 I in them and thou in me that they may be made perfect in one and that the world may know that thou hast sent me and hast loved them as thou hast loved me 24 * Chap. 12.26 Father I will that they also whom thou hast given me be with me where I am that they may behold my glory which thou hast given me for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world 25 O righteous Father the world hath not known thee but I have known thee and these have known that thou hast sent me 26 And I have declared unto them thy name and will declare it that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them and I in them CHAP. XVIII 1 Judas betrayeth Jesus 6 The officers fall to the ground 10 Peter smiteth off Malchus ear 12 Jesus is taken and led unto Annas and Caiaphas 15 Peters denial 19 Jesus examined before Caiaphas 28 His arraignment before Pilate 36 His kingdom 40 The Jews ask Barabbas to be let loose WHen Jesus had spoken these words * Mat. 25.36 he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron where was a garden into the which he entred and his disciples 2 And Judas also which betrayed him knew the place for Jesus oft-times resorted thither with his disciples 3 * Mat. 26.47 Judas then having received a band of men and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees cometh thither with lanterns and torches and weapons 4 Jesus therefore knowing all things that should come upon him went forth and faid unto them Whom seek ye 5 They answered him Jesus of Nazareth Jesus saith unto them I am be And Judas also which betrayed him stood with them 6 Assoon then as he had said unto them I am be they went backward and fell to the ground 7 Then asked he them again Whom seek ye and they said Jesus of Nazareth 8 Jesus answered I have told you that I am be If therefore ye seek me let these go their way 9 That the saying might be fulfilled which he spake * Chap. 17.12 Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none 10 Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it and smote the high priests servant cut off his right ear The servants name was Malchus 11 Then said Jesus unto Peter Put up thy sword into the sheath the cup which my Father hath given me shall I not drink it 12 Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took Jesus and bound him 13 And led him away to Annas first for he was father in law to Caiaphas which was the high priest that same year ‖ And Annu sent Christ bound unto Caiaphas the high prest ver 24. 14 * Chap. 11.30 Now Caiaphas was he which gave counsel to the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people 15 ¶ * Mat. 26.58 And Simon Peter followed Jesus and so did another disciple that disciple was known unto the high priest and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest 16 But Peter stood at the door without Then went out that other disciple which was known unto the high priest and spake unto her that kept the door and brought in Peter 17 Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter Art not thou also one of this mans disciples He saith I am not 18 And the servants and officers stood there who had made a fire of coals for it was cold and they warmed themselves and Peter stood with them and warmed himself 19 ¶ The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples of his doctrine 20 Jesus answered him I spake openly to the world I ever taught in the synagogue and in the temple whither the Jews always resort and in secret have I said nothing 21 Why askest thou me ask them which heard me what I have said unto them behold they know what I said 22 And when he had thus spoken one of the officers which stood by stroke Jesus ‖ Or with a rod. with the palm of his hand saying Answerest thou the high priest so 23 Jesus answered him If I have spoken evil bear witness of the evil but if well why smitest thou me 24 * Mat. 26.57 Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas that high priest 25 And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself * Mat. 26.69 They said therefore unto him Art not thou also one of his disciples He denied it and said I am not 26 One of the servants of the high priest being his kinsman whose ear Peter cut off saith Did not I see thee in the garden with him 27 Peter then denied again and immediately the cock crew 28 ¶ * Mat. 27.2 Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto ‖ Or Pilates bouse the hall of judgement and it was early * Act. 10.28 and they themselves went not into the judgement-hall lest they should be defiled but that they might eat the pass over 29 Pilate then went out unto them and said What accusation bring you against this man 30 They answered and said unto him If he were not a malefactour we would not have delivered him up unto thee 31 Then said Pilate unto them Take ye him and judge him according to your
kill the prisoners lest any of them should swim out and escape 43 But the centurion willing to save Paul kept them from their purpose and commanded that they which could swim should cast themselves first into the sea and get to land 44 And the rest some on boards and some on broken pieces of the ship And so it came to pass that they escaped all safe to land CHAP. XXVIII 1 Paul after his shipwrack is kindly entertained of the Barbarians 3 The viper on his hand hurteth him not 8 He healeth many diseases in the island 11 They depart towards Rome 17 He declareth to the Jews the cause of his coming 24 After his preaching some were perswaded and some beleeved not 30 Yet he preacheth there two years ANd when they were escaped then they knew that the island was called Melita 2 And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness for they kindled a fire and received us every one because of the present rain and because of the cold 3 And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire there came a viper out of the heat and fastned on his hand 4 And when the Barbarians law the venemous beast hang on his hand they said among themselves No doubt this man is a murderer whom though he hath escaped the sea yet vengeance suffereth not to live 5 And he shook off the beast into the fire and felt no harm 6 Howbeit they looked when he should have swoln or faln down dead suddenly but after they had looked a great while and saw no harm come to him they changed their minds and said that he was a God 7 In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island whose name was Publius who received us and lodged us three days courteously 8 And it came to pass that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloudy flux to whom Paul entred in and prayed and laid his hands on him and healed him 9 So when this was done others also which had diseases in the island came and were healed 10 Who also honoured us with many honours and when we departed they laded us with such things as were necessary 11 And after three moneths we departed in a ship of Alexandria which had wintred in the isle whose signe was Castor and Pollux 12 And landing at Syracuse we tarried there three days 13 And from thence we set a compass and came to Rhegium and after one day the south-wind blew and we came the next day to Puteoâ—â— 14 Where we found brethren and were desired to tarry with them seven days and so we went toward Rome 15 And from thence when the brethren heard of us they came to meet us as far as Appii-forum and the Three taverns whom when Paul saw he thanked God and took courage 16 And when we came to Rome the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a souldier that kept him 17 And it came to pass that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together And when they were come together he said unto them Men and brethren though I have committed nothing against the people or customs of our fathers yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans 18 Who when they had examined me would have let me go because there was no cause of death in me 19 But when the Jews spake against it I was constrained to appeal unto Cesar not that I had ought to accuse my nation of 20 For this cause therefore have I called for you to see you and to speak with you because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain 21 And they said unto him We neither received letters out of Judea concerning thee neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee 22 But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest for as concerning this sect we know that every where it is spoken against 23 And when they had appointed him a day there came many to him into his lodging to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God perswading them concerning Jesus both out of the law of Moses and out of the prophets from morning till evening 24 And some beleeved the things which were spoken and some beleeved not 25 And when they agreed not among themselves they departed after that Paul had spoken one word Well spake the holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers 26 Saying * Isa 6.9 Mat. 13.14 Mar. 4.12 Luk. 8.10 Joh. 12.40 Rom. 11.8 Go unto this people and say Hearing ye shall hear and shall not understand and seeing ye shall see and not perceive 27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross and their ears are dull of hearing and their eyes have they closed lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and should be converted and I should heal them 28 Be it known therefore unto you that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles and that they will hear it 29 And when he had said these words the Jews departed and had great reasoning among themselves 30 And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house and received all that came in unto him 31 Preaching the kingdom of God and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence no man forbidding him ¶ The epistle of PAUL the Apostle to the ROMANS CHAP. I. 1 Paul commendeth his calling to the Romans 9 and his desire to come to them 16 What his gospel is and the righteousness which it sheweth 18 God is angry with all manner of sin 21 What were the sins of the Gentiles PAul a servant of Jesus Christ called to be an apostle * Act. 13.2 separated unto the gospel of God 2 Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures 3 Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh 4 And †Or. determined declared to be the Son of God with power according to the spirit of holiness by the resurrection from the dead 5 By whom we have received grace and apostleship ‖ Or to the obedience of faith for obedience to the faith among all nations for his name 6 Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ 7 To all that be in Rome beloved of God called to be saints Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ 8 First I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world 9 For God is my witness whom I serve ‖ Or in my spirit with my spirit in the Gospel of his Son that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers
dishonourest thou God 24 For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you as it is * Isa 52.5 Ezek. 36.20.23 written 25 For circumcision verily profiteth if thou keep the law but if thou be a breaker of the law thy circumcision is made uncircumcision 26 Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision 27 And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature if it fulfil the law judge thee who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law 28 For he is not a Jew which is one outwardly neither is that circumcision which is outward in the flesh 29 But he is a Jew which is one inwardly and circumcision is that of the heart in the spirit and not in the letter whose praise is not of men but of God CHAP. III. 1 The Jews prerogative 3 which they have not lost 9 Howbeit the law convinceth them also of sin 20 Therefore no flesh is justified by the law 28 but all without difference by saith onely 31 and yet the law is not abolished WHat advantage then hath the Jew or what profit is there of circumcision 2 Much every way chiefly because that unto them were committed the oracles of God 3 For what it some did not beleeve shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect 4 God forbid yea let God be true but * Ps 116.11 every man a liar as it is written * Ps 51.4 That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings and mightest overcome when thou art judged 5 But if our unrighteousness commend the righteousness of God what shall we say Is God unrighteous who taketh vengeance I speak as a man 6 God forbid for then how shall God judge the world 7 For if the truth of God hath more abounded through my lie unto his glory why yet am I also judged as a sinner 8 And not rather as we be slanderously reported and as some affirm that we say Let us do evil that good may come whose damnation is just 9 What then are we better then they No in no wise for we have before †Gr. charged proved both Jews and Gentiles that they are all under sin 10 As it is written * Ps 14.1 2 3. There is none righteous no not one 11 There is none that understandeth there is none that seeketh after God 12 They are all gone out of the way they are together become unprofitable there is none that doeth good no not one 13 * Psal 5.9 Their throat is an open sepulchre with their tongues they have used deceit * Ps 140.3 the poison of asps is under their lips 14 * Ps 10.7 Whos 's mouth is full of cursing and bitterness 15 * Pro. 1.16 Isa 59.7 8. Their feet are swift to shed bloud 16 Destruction and misery are in their ways 17 And the way of peace have they not known 18 * Psa 36.1 There is no fear of God before their eyes 19 Now we know that what things soever the law faith it faith to them who are under the law that every mouth may be stopped and all the world may become ‖ Or. subject to the judgement of God guilty before God 20 Therefore * Gal. 2.16 by the deeds or the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight for by the law is the knowledge of sin 21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested being witnessed by the law and the prophets 22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that beleeve for there is no difference 23 For all have sinned and com◠short of the glory of God 24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Jesus Christ 25 Whom God hath ‖ Or fore-ordained set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his bloud to declare his righteousness for the ‖ Or passing over remission of sins that are past through the forbearance of God 26 To declare I say at this time his righteousness that he might be just and the justifier of him which beleeveth in Jesus 27 Where is boasting then It is excluded By what law of works Nay but by the law of faith 28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law 29 Is he the God of the Jews onley is he not also of the Gentiles Yes of the Gentiles also 30 Seeing it is one God which shall justifie the circumcision by faith and uncircumcision through faith 31 Do we then make void the law through faith God forbid yea we establish the law CHAP. IV. 1 Abrahams faith was imputed to him for righteousness to before be was circumcised 13 By faith onely be and his seed received the promise 16 Abraham is the father of all that beleeve 24 Our faith also shall be imputed to us for righteousness WHat shall we say then that Abraham our father as pertaining to the flesh hath found 2 For if Abraham were justified by works he hath whereof to glory but not before God 3 For what faith the scripture * Gen. 15.6 Gal. 3.6 Jam. 2.23 Abraham beleeved God and it was counted unto him for righteousness 4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace but of debt 5 But to him that worketh not but beleeveth on him that justifieth the ungodly his faith is counted for righteousness 6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works 7 Saying * Psal 32.1 Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven and whose sins are covered 8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin 9 Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision onely or upon the uncircumcision also For we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness 10 How was it then reckoned when he was in circumcision or in uncircumcision not in circumcision but in uncircumcision 11 And he received the signe of circumcision a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised that he might be the father of all them that beleeve though they be not circumcised that righteousness might be imputed unto them also 12 And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision onely but also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham which he had being yet uncircumcised 13 For the promise that he should be the heir of the world was not to Abraham or to his seed through the law but through the righteousness of faith 14 For if they which are of the law be heirs faith is made void and the promise made of none effect 15 Because the law worketh wrath for where no law is there is no transgression 16 Therefore it is of faith that it might be by grace to the
honest though we be as reprobates 8 For we can do nothing against the truth but for the truth 9 For we are glad when we are weak and ye are strong and this also we wish even your perfection 10 Therefore I write these things being absent lest being present I should use sharpness according to the power which the Lord hath given me to edification and not to destruction 11 Finally brethren farewel Be perfect be of good comfort be of one minde live in peace and the God of love and peace shall be with you 12 * Rom. 16.16 Greet one another with an holy kiss 13 All the saints salute you 14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the communion of the holy Ghost be with you all Amen ¶ The second epistle to the Corinthians was written from Philippi a city of Macedonia by Titus and Lucas ¶ The epistle of PAUL the Apostle to the GALATIANS CHAP. I. 6 He wondreth that they have so soon lest him and the gospel 8 and accurseth those that preath any other gospel then he did 11 He learned the gospel not of men but of God 13 and sheweth what he was before his calling 17 and what he did presently after it PAul an apostle not of men neither by man but by Jesus Christ and God the Father who raised him from the dead 2 And all the brethren which are with me unto the churches of Galatia 3 Grace be to you and peace from God the Father and from our Lord Jesus Christ 4 Who gave himself for our sins that he might deliver us from this present evil world according to the will of God and our Father 5 To whom be glory for ever and ever Amen 6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel 7 Which is not another but there be some that trouble you and would pervert the gospel of Christ 8 But though we or an angel from heaven preach any other gospel unto you then that which we have preached unto you let him be accursed 9 As we said before so say I now again If any man preach any other gospel unto you then that ye have received let him be accursed 10 For do I now perswade men or God or do I seek to please men for if I yet pleased men I should not be the servant of Christ 11 But I certifie you brethren that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man 12 For I neither received it of man neither was I taught it but by the revelation of Jesus Christ 13 For ye have heard of my conversation in time past in the Jews religion how that * Act. 9.1 beyond measure I persecuted the church of God and wasted it 14 And profited in the Jews religion above many my †Gr. equals in years equals in mine own nation being more exceedingly zealous of the traditions of my fathers 15 But when it pleased God who separated me from my mothers womb and called me by his grace 16 To reveal his Son in me that * Eph. 3 8. I might preach him among the heathen immediately I conferred not with flesh and bloud 17 Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me but I went into Arabia and returned again unto Damascus 18 Then after three years I ‖ Or returned went up to Jerusalem to see Peter and abode with him fifteen days 19 But other of the apostles saw I none save James the Lords brother 20 Now the things which I write unto you behold before God I lie not 21 Afterwards I came into the regions of Syria and Cilicia 22 And was unknown by face unto the churches of Judea which were in Christ 23 But they had heard onely That he which persecuted us in times past now preacheth the faith which once he destroyed 24 And they glorified God in me CHAP. II. 1 He sheweth when he went up again to Jerusalem and for what pur-purpose and that Titus was not circumcised 11 and that he resisted Peter and told him the reason 14 why he and other being Jews do beleeve in Christ to be justified by faith and not by works 20 and that they live not in sin who are so justified THen fourteen years after I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas and took Titus with me alse 2 And I went up by revelation and communicated unto them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles but ‖ Or severally privately to them which were of reputation lest by any means I should run or had run in vain 3 But neither Titus who was with me being a Greek was compelled to be circumcised 4 And that because of false brethren unawares brought in who came in privily to spie out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus that they might bring us into bondage 5 To whom we gave place by subjection no not for an hour that the truth of the gospel might continue with you 6 But of these who seemed to be somewhat whatsoever they were it maketh no matter to me * Rom 2.12 God accepteth no mans person for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me 7 But contrariwise when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter 8 For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision the same was mighty in me towards the Gentiles 9 And when James Cephas and John who seemed to be pillars perceived the grace that was given unto me they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship that we should go unto the heathen and they unto the circumcision 10 Onely they would that we should remember the poor the same which I also was forward to do 11 But when Peter was come to Antioch I withstood him to the face because he was to be blamed 12 For before that certain came from James he did eat with the Gentiles but when they were come he withdrew and separated himself fearing them which were of the circumcision 13 And the other Jews dissembled likewise with him insomuch that Barnabas also was carried away with their dissimulation 14 But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel I said unto Peter before them all If thou being a Jew livest after the manner of Gentiles and not as do the Jews why compellest thou the Gentiles to live as do the Jews 15 We who are Jews by nature and not sinners of the Gentiles 16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by the faith of Jesus Christ even we have believed in Jesus Christ that we might be justified by the faith of Christ and not by the works of the law for * Rom. 3.20 by the works of the law shall no flesh be
justified 17 But if while we seek to be justified by Christ we our selves also are found sinners is therefore Christ the minister of sin God forbid 18 For if I build again the things which I destroyed I make my self a transgressour 19 For I through the law am dead to the law that I might live unto God 20 I am crucified with Christ Nevertheless I live yet not I but Christ liveth in me and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me 21 I do not frustrate the grace of God for if righteousness come by the law then Christ is dead in vain CHAP. III. 1 He asketh what moved them to leave the faith and hang upon the law 6 They that believe are justified 9 and blessed with Abraham 10 And this he sheweth by many reasons O Foolish Galatians who hath bewitched you that you should not obey the truth before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth crucified among you 2 This onely would I learn of you Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law or by the hearing of faith 3 Are ye so foolish having begun in the Spirit are ye now made perfect by the flesh 4 Have ye suffered ‖ Or so great so many things in vain if it be yet in vain 5 He therefore that ministreth to you the Spirit and worketh miracles among you doeth he it by the works of the law or by the hearing of faith 6 Even as * Gen. 15.6 Abraham beleeved God and it was ‖ Or imputed accounted to him for righteousness 7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith the same are the children of Abraham 8 And the scripture foreseeing that God would justifie the heathen through faith preached before the gospel unto Abraham saying * Gen. 12.3 In thee shall all nations be blessed 9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham 10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse for it is written * Deu. 27.26 Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them 11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God it is evident for * Hab. 2.4 Rom. 1.17 Heb. 10. 38. II. 1 He comforteth them against the sins of infirmity 3 Rightly to know God is to keep his commandments 9 to love our brethren 15 and not to love the world 18 We must beware of sâ—ducers 20 from whose deceits the godly are safe preserved by perseverance in faith and â—oliness of life MY little children these things write I unto you that ye sin not And if any man sin * Heb. 9. â—â— we have an advocate with the Father Jesus Christ the righteous 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins and not for ours onely but also for the sins of the whole world 3 And hereby we do know that we know him if we keep his commandments 4 He that saith I know him and keepeth not his commandments is a liar and the truth is not in him 5 But whoso keepeth his word in him verily is the love of God perfected hereby know we that we are in him 6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk even as he walked 7 Brethren * 2 Joh. â— I write no new commandment unto you but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning the old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning 8 Again a new commandment I write unto you which thing is true in him and in you because the darkness is past and the true light now shineth 9 He that saith he is in the light and hateth his brother is in darkness even until now 10 * Ch. 3 1â— He that loveth his brother abideth in the light and there is none †Gr scandal occasion of stumbling in him 11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness and walketh in darkness and knoweth not whither he goeth because that darkness hath blinded his eyes 12 I write unto you little children because your sins are forgiven you for his names sake 13 I write unto you fathers because ye have known him that is from the beginning I write unto you young men because you have overcome the wicked one I write unto you little children because ye have known the Father 14 I have written unto you fathers because ye have known him that is from the beginning I have written unto you young men because ye are strong and the word of God abideth in you and ye have over come the wicked one 15 Love not the world neither the things that are in the world If any man love the world the love of the Father is not in him 16 For all that is in the world the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life is not of the Father but is of the world 17 And the world passeth away and the lust thereof but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever 18 Little children it is the last time and as ye have heard that Antichrist shall come even now are there many Antichrists whereby we know that it is the last time 19 They went out from us but they were not of us for if they had been of us they would no doubt have continued with us but they went out that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us 20 But ye have an unction from the holy One and ye know all things 21 I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth but because ye know it and that no lie is of the truth 22 Who is a har but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ He is Antichrist that denieth the Father and the Son 23 Whosoever denieth the Son the same hath not the Father but he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also 24 Let that therefore abide in you which ye have heard from the beginning If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you ye also shall continue in the Son and in the Father 25 And this is the promise that he hath promised us even eternal life 26 These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you 27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you and ye need not that any man teach you But as the same anointing teacheth you of all things and is truth and is no lie and even as it hath taught you ye shall abide in ‖ Or it him 28 And now little children abide in him that when he shall appear we may have confidence and not be ashamed before him at his coming 29 If ye know that he is righteous ‖ Or know ye ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him CHAP. III. 1 He declareth the singular love of God towards us in making us his sons 3 who therefore ought obediently to keep his commandments 11 as also brotherly to love one another BEhold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us that we should be called the sons of God therefore the world knoweth us not because it knew him not 2 Beloved now are we the sons of God and it doth not yet appear what we shall be but we know that when he shall appear we shall be like him for we shall see him as he is 3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself even as he is pure 4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law for sin is the transgression of the law 5 And ye know that he was manifested * Isa 53.6 c. to take away our sins and in him is no sin 6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not whosoever sinneth hath not seen him neither known him 7 Little children let no man deceive you he that doeth righteousness is righteous even as he is righteous 8 * Joh. 8.44 He that committeth sin is of the devil for the
devil sinneth from the beginning For this purpose the Son of God was manifested that he might destroy the works of the devil 9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin for his seed remaineth in him and he cannot sin because he is born of God 10 In this the children of God are manifest and the children of the devil Whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God neither he that loveth not his brother 11 For this is the ‖ Or commandment message that ye heard from the beginning * Joh. 13.34 15.12 that we should love one another 12 Not as * Gen. 4.8 Cain who was of that wicked one and slew his brother And wherefore slew he him Because his own works were evil and his brothers righteous 13 Marvel not my brethren if the world hate you 14 We know that we have passed from death unto life because we love the brethren he that loveth not his brother abideth in death 15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him 16 Hereby perceive we the love of God because he laid down his life for us and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren 17 But * Luk. 3.11 whoso hath this worlds good and seeth his brother have need and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him how dwelleth the love of God in him 18 My little children let us not love in word neither in tongue but in deed and in truth 19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth and shall †Gr. persâ—â—â—e assure our hearts before him 20 For it our heart condemn us God is greater then our heart and knoweth all things 21 Beloved if our heart condemn us not then have we confidence towards God 22 And * Mat. 21.22 Joh. 15.7 16.23 whatsoever we ask we receive of him because we keep his commandments and do those things that are pleasing in his sight 23 And * Joh. 6.29 and 17.3 this is his commandment that we should beleeve on the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another as he gave us commandment 24 And * Joh. 15. â—0 he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him and he in him and hereby we know that he abideth in us by the Spirit which he hath given us CHAP. IV. 1 He warneth them not to beleeve all teachers who boast of the Spirit but to try them by the rules of the catholick faith 7 and by many reasons exhorteth to brotherly love BEloved beleeve not every spirit but try the spirits whether they are of God because many false prophets are gone out into the world 2 Hereby know ye the spirit of God Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God and this is that spirit of antichrist whereof you have heard that it should come and even now already is it in the world 4 Ye are of God little children and have overcome them because greater is he that is in you then he that is in the world 5 They are of the world therefore speak they of the world and the world heareth them 6 We are of God * Joh. 8 47. he that knoweth God heareth us he that is not of God heareth not us Hereby know we the Spirit of truth and the spirit of errour 7 Beloved let us love one another for love is of God and every one that loveth is born of God and knoweth God 8 He that loveth not knoweth not God for God is love 9 * Joh. 3.16 In this was manifested the love of God towards us because that God sent his onely begotten Son into the world that we might live through him 10 Herein is love not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins 11 Beloved if God so loved us we ought also to love one another 12 * 1 Tim. 6.16 No man hath seen God at any time If we love one another God dwelleth in us and his love is perfected in us 13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him and he in us because he hath given us of his Spirit 14 And we have seen and do testifie that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world 15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God God dwelleth in him and he in God 16 And we have known and beleeved the love that God hath to us God is love and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God and God in him 17 Herein is †Gr. love with us our love made perfect that we may have boldness in the day of judgement because as he is so are we in this world 18 There is no fear in love but perfect love casteth out fear because fear hath torment he that feareth is not made perfect in love 19 We love him because he first loved us 20 If a man say I love God and hateth his brother he is a liar for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen how can he love God whom he hath not seen 21 And * Joh. 13.34 15.12 this commandment have we from him that he who loveth God love his brother also CHAP. V. He that loveth God loveth his children and keepeth his commandments 3 which to the faithful are light and not grievous 9 Jesus is the Son of God able to save us 14 and to bear our prayers which we make for our selves and for others WHosoever beleeveth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him 2 By this we know that we love the children of God when we love God and keep his commandments 3 For this is the love of God that we keep his commandments and * Mat. 11.30 his commandments are not grievous 4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world and this is the victory that overcometh the world even our faith 5 Who is he that overcometh the world but he that beleeveth that Jesus is the Son of God 6 This is he that came by water and bloud even Jesus Christ not by water onely but by water and bloud and it is the Spirit that beareth witness because the Spirit is truth 7 For there are three that bear record in heaven the Father the Word and the holy Ghost and these three are one 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth the spirit and the water and the bloud and these three agree in one 9 If we receive the witness of men the witness of God is greater for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son 10 He that beleeveth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself he that beleeveth
