so_o crafty_a in_o this_o point_n that_o he_o erect_v ever_o one_o idol_n or_o other_o in_o our_o soul_n and_o sometime_o under_o the_o show_n of_o virtue_n which_o of_o all_o be_v most_o dangerous_a and_o in_o every_o work_n that_o we_o take_v in_o hand_n be_v it_o never_o so_o holy_a he_o be_v at_o our_o right_a hand_n and_o make_v himself_o to_o have_v interest_n in_o it_o and_o he_o content_v himself_o not_o with_o this_o under_o the_o show_n of_o virtue_n to_o corrupt_v we_o but_o he_o be_v so_o watchful_a that_o even_o in_o the_o best_a action_n and_o when_o you_o be_v best_o occupy_v in_o your_o most_o virtuous_a action_n he_o mix_v then_o with_o sin_n &_o so_o do_v all_o that_o lie_v in_o he_o to_o make_v you_o lose_v your_o profit_n and_o lose_v your_o reward_n for_o when_o you_o be_v best_o occupy_v he_o go_v about_o to_o engender_v in_o you_o a_o opinion_n of_o yourselves_o and_o so_o defraud_v god_n of_o his_o glory_n or_o otherwise_o in_o do_v of_o good_a deed_n he_o make_v you_o so_o slack_a and_o negligent_a that_o if_o you_o do_v they_o you_o do_v they_o cold_o or_o so_o indiscreete_o that_o he_o make_v you_o begin_v at_o the_o last_o first_o and_o make_v it_o that_o shall_v be_v first_o last_o and_o so_o as_o martha_n be_v to_o be_v occupy_v and_o overbusie_a in_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v not_o so_o necessary_a as_o the_o thing_n wherein_o mary_n be_v occupy_v for_o she_o shall_v have_v prefer_v first_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n to_o the_o prepare_v of_o christ_n supper_n this_o be_v but_o to_o give_v you_o a_o insight_n anâ—_n to_o let_v you_o see_v that_o the_o devil_n be_v so_o crafty_a that_o either_o he_o cast_v in_o a_o false_a conceit_n of_o ourselves_o in_o do_v any_o good_a deed_n or_o else_o make_v we_o to_o do_v that_o last_o which_o shall_v be_v first_o or_o then_o make_v we_o altogether_o so_o sluggish_a and_o so_o negligent_a that_o we_o do_v the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n cold_o and_o so_o one_o way_n or_o other_o he_o hold_v we_o ever_o in_o a_o continual_a business_n so_o that_o we_o can_v be_v half_o watchful_a enough_o for_o we_o have_v to_o do_v with_o principality_n and_o power_n with_o spiritual_a wickedness_n which_o be_v above_o we_o and_o within_o we_o also_o for_o there_o be_v not_o that_o man_n that_o have_v corruption_n within_o he_o but_o satan_n be_v in_o he_o we_o can_v therefore_o be_v half_o watchful_a or_o studious_a enough_o to_o cast_v out_o the_o devil_n to_o renounce_v ourselves_o and_o to_o submit_v we_o unto_o the_o obedience_n of_o christ._n thus_o far_o concern_v the_o conjunction_n now_o see_v that_o the_o sign_n and_o the_o thing_n signify_v be_v diverse_a thereof_o it_o rest_v to_o be_v consider_v how_o the_o sign_n be_v deliver_v &_o how_o the_o thing_n signify_v be_v deliver_v and_o after_o what_o manner_n they_o be_v receive_v and_o therefore_o concern_v this_o you_o have_v these_o thing_n to_o mark_v first_o to_o consider_v whether_o the_o sign_n and_o the_o thing_n signify_v be_v deliver_v unto_o you_o by_o one_o man_n or_o not_o second_o to_o consider_v whether_o the_o sign_n and_o the_o thing_n signify_v be_v deliver_v unto_o you_o in_o one_o action_n or_o not_o three_o whether_o both_o these_o thing_n be_v give_v by_o one_o instrument_n or_o not_o and_o four_a you_o be_v to_o consider_v whether_o the_o sign_n and_o the_o thing_n signify_v be_v offer_v and_o receive_v after_o one_o manner_n or_o not_o now_o after_o that_o you_o have_v consider_v all_o these_o in_o the_o end_n you_o shall_v find_v that_o the_o sign_n and_o the_o thing_n signify_v be_v not_o give_v by_o one_o person_n you_o shall_v find_v next_o that_o they_o be_v not_o give_v in_o one_o sort_n of_o action_n three_o you_o shall_v find_v that_o they_o be_v not_o both_o offer_v and_o give_v by_o one_o instrument_n and_o four_a you_o shall_v find_v that_o they_o be_v not_o both_o give_v and_o receive_v after_o one_o manner_n so_o find_v this_o diversity_n you_o have_v this_o to_o do_v mark_v the_o diversity_n of_o the_o offerer_n and_o giver_n mark_v the_o diversity_n of_o the_o action_n mark_v three_o the_o diversity_n of_o the_o instrument_n and_o four_a the_o diverse_a manner_n of_o receive_v mark_v all_o these_o diligent_o and_o you_o shall_v find_v little_a difficulty_n in_o the_o sacrament_n and_o first_o to_o make_v it_o clear_a unto_o you_o i_o say_v that_o the_o sign_n and_o the_o thing_n signify_v by_o the_o sign_n be_v not_o both_o give_v by_o one_o and_o this_o you_o see_v plain_o for_o as_o for_o the_o sign_n that_o bread_n and_o that_o wine_n you_o see_v yourselves_o that_o the_o minister_n offer_v unto_o you_o the_o sign_n he_o give_v you_o that_o sacrament_n as_o that_o sign_n be_v a_o earthly_a and_o exercise_n of_o patience_n for_o if_o the_o heart_n understand_v that_o the_o lord_n have_v reject_v our_o prayer_n altogether_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a to_o continue_v in_o prayer_n notâ—_n so_o the_o mire_n and_o deep_a clay_n there_o be_v no_o pit_n so_o deep_a take_v it_o as_o thou_o will_v that_o can_v stay_v the_o ear_n of_o the_o everliving_a god_n there_o be_v no_o distance_n of_o place_n nor_o thickness_n of_o impediment_n that_o can_v stay_v the_o voice_n of_o any_o suppliant_a be_v the_o pit_n never_o so_o deep_a will_v thou_o cry_v true_o thou_o shall_v be_v hear_v and_o it_o be_v as_o true_a on_o the_o other_o side_n whosoever_o cry_v and_o showt_v if_o his_o pit_n be_v never_o so_o deep_a he_o be_v not_o drown_v have_v thou_o this_o liberty_n to_o cry_v in_o cry_v so_o long_o as_o we_o be_v here_o we_o be_v in_o one_o pit_n or_o other_o the_o pit_n of_o iniquity_n circle_v we_o so_o long_o as_o we_o be_v here_o there_o be_v no_o mean_n to_o be_v deliver_v but_o by_o feel_v our_o misery_n for_o feeling_n make_v we_o to_o cry_v and_o by_o cry_v we_o be_v hear_v thus_o much_o for_o the_o prophet_n first_o experience_n upon_o this_o in_o the_o three_o verse_n he_o take_v occasion_n to_o praise_n god_n by_o reason_n of_o this_o his_o singular_a experience_n which_o give_v he_o the_o matter_n &_o argument_n of_o a_o new_a song_n this_o song_n be_v call_v a_o new_a song_n by_o reason_n of_o the_o new_a occasion_n of_o the_o new_a delivery_n which_o occasion_v to_o he_o the_o matter_n of_o new_a praise_n in_o the_o end_n of_o the_o verse_n he_o set_v down_o two_o special_a use_n of_o this_o praise_n whereunto_o it_o tend_v the_o first_o use_n be_v it_o tend_v to_o stir_v up_o the_o church_n to_o follow_v his_o example_n in_o praise_v god_n the_o second_o use_n of_o it_o tend_v to_o the_o edification_n of_o every_o member_n of_o the_o church_n in_o the_o fear_n and_o worship_v of_o god_n of_o this_o verse_n i_o gather_v short_o two_o lesson_n and_o so_o i_o shall_v go_v forward_o the_o first_o who_o be_v it_o that_o put_v this_o song_n of_o praise_n in_o our_o mouth_n who_o make_v we_o to_o sing_v this_o new_a song_n in_o our_o heart_n lesson_n only_o god_n put_v the_o song_n of_o praise_n in_o our_o mouth_n and_o make_v we_o to_o sing_v this_o new_a song_n in_o our_o heart_n for_o by_o nature_n none_o have_v knowledge_n to_o praise_v he_o nor_o will_v praise_v he_o the_o way_n and_o manner_n how_o to_o praise_v he_o be_v by_o a_o taste_n and_o feel_n of_o his_o sweetness_n it_o be_v not_o possible_a that_o the_o heart_n can_v praise_v he_o except_o it_o have_v a_o taste_n thereof_o all_o the_o benefit_n of_o the_o lord_n whether_o they_o be_v spiritual_a or_o temporal_a shall_v be_v as_o many_o occasion_n of_o praise_n but_o this_o silence_n be_v a_o argument_n of_o the_o hardness_n of_o our_o heart_n for_o sure_o if_o we_o be_v touch_v with_o a_o feel_n of_o this_o sweetness_n we_o will_v burst_v forth_o in_o praise_n but_o our_o slothfulness_n show_v the_o hardness_n of_o our_o heart_n and_o where_o this_o foul_a death_n continue_v there_o be_v no_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n the_o second_o thing_n that_o i_o mark_v be_v upon_o the_o end_n of_o this_o verse_n it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o praise_v god_n thyself_o lesson_n it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o thank_v he_o in_o thy_o own_o heart_n but_o if_o thou_o be_v a_o true_a member_n of_o the_o church_n thou_o must_v propose_v this_o benefit_n to_o the_o church_n for_o benefit_n be_v not_o give_v as_o particular_a privilege_n to_o particular_a person_n but_o as_o public_a testimony_n of_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n towards_o his_o church_n therefore_o every_o benefit_n shall_v be_v propose_v to_o the_o church_n that_o the_o church_n may_v have_v occasion_n to_o praise_n god_n in_o it_o now_o upon_o this_o three_o verse_n he_o burst_v forth_o into_o that_o notable_a sentence_n which_o we_o have_v in_o the_o four_o verse_n bless_a be_v the_o man_n that_o make_v the_o lord_n his_o trust_n and_o regard_v not_o the_o proud_a sure_o that_o man_n be_v exceed_o bless_v who_o be_v not_o carry_v with_o the_o example_n of_o the_o proud_a and_o vain_a in_o the_o earth_n for_o why_o by_o nature_n there_o be_v never_o a_o one_o of_o we_o but_o we_o be_v all_o proud_a &_o vain_a second_o how_o forcible_a evil_a example_n be_v all_o man_n by_o experience_n know_v three_o we_o know_v the_o multitude_n account_v common_a custom_n and_o example_n for_o law_n therefore_o of_o necessity_n that_o man_n must_v be_v exceed_o bless_v that_o in_o such_o a_o sight_n of_o evil_a example_n put_v his_o trust_n in_o god_n sure_o these_o few_o in_o number_n that_o depend_v upon_o god_n if_o they_o be_v compare_v with_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o world_n of_o all_o man_n of_o the_o earth_n they_o will_v be_v count_v most_o miserable_a and_o unhappy_a and_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v they_o be_v the_o ofscouring_n and_o sweep_n of_o the_o world_n for_o as_o long_o as_o they_o be_v here_o beneath_o in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o patience_n their_o life_n be_v hide_v with_o christ_n and_o will_v not_o appear_v until_o the_o lord_n appear_v to_o be_v marvelous_a in_o his_o saint_n 2._o thes._n 1._o at_o the_o which_o time_n their_o body_n shall_v shine_v as_o the_o sun_n and_o their_o soul_n shall_v shine_v as_o the_o angel_n in_o hope_n of_o this_o estate_n the_o poor_a member_n of_o the_o church_n repose_v in_o the_o present_a peregrination_n there_o be_v here_o two_o way_n set_v down_o there_o be_v a_o broad_a and_o a_o open_a way_n wherein_o rhe_n proud_a and_o vain_a man_n of_o the_o earth_n walk_v there_o be_v a_o narrow_a and_o a_o strait_a way_n wherein_o the_o simple_a and_o they_o that_o depend_v on_o god_n walk_v indeed_o the_o broad_a way_n be_v large_a easy_a and_o pleasant_a there_o be_v no_o throng_n nor_o trouble_v in_o it_o as_o will_v appear_v for_o a_o while_n but_o the_o end_n of_o it_o be_v straitness_n everlasting_a and_o terrible_a straitness_n on_o the_o other_o side_n the_o other_o way_n be_v straight_o in_o the_o entry_n and_o many_o impediment_n be_v in_o that_o way_n yet_o the_o end_n be_v large_a and_o pleasant_a and_o bring_v a_o joyful_a eternity_n i_o think_v that_o the_o soiourner_n that_o be_v certain_a of_o a_o good_a lodging_n may_v well_o endure_v the_o difficulty_n of_o the_o way_n and_o therefore_o see_v we_o be_v certain_a of_o our_o lodging_n &_o that_o the_o way_n be_v short_a let_v every_o one_o strive_v to_o enter_v into_o it_o how_o straight_o so_o ever_o it_o be_v the_o end_n be_v large_a the_o lord_n of_o his_o mercy_n work_n in_o every_o one_o of_o we_o that_o we_o may_v both_o know_v the_o way_n and_o walk_v in_o it_o till_o our_o life_n end_n servant_n the_o last_o thing_n that_o i_o mark_v upon_o this_o experience_n you_o see_v two_o end_n why_o the_o lord_n delay_v to_o help_v his_o servant_n the_o first_o and_o special_a end_n be_v that_o he_o may_v be_v the_o more_o glorify_v the_o more_o that_o he_o differ_v the_o second_o end_n be_v that_o these_o hasty_a man_n that_o will_v not_o abide_v the_o leisure_n of_o the_o lord_n may_v see_v themselves_o disappoint_v when_o they_o see_v the_o servant_n of_o the_o the_o lord_n so_o mighty_o deliver_v for_o there_o be_v not_o one_o among_o a_o thousand_o that_o in_o patience_n will_v wait_v upon_o the_o deliverance_n of_o the_o lord_n but_o run_v to_o this_o or_o those_o mean_n unto_o unlawful_a mean_n and_o ever_o seek_v help_n for_o the_o present_a haste_n although_o it_o be_v with_o the_o hurt_n of_o conscience_n and_o these_o unlawful_a sort_n of_o delivery_n bring_v ever_o shame_n
of_o god_n at_o the_o last_o he_o shall_v never_o come_v out_o so_o in_o time_n let_v every_o one_o beware_v to_o abuse_v the_o grace_n of_o god_n this_o way_n but_o beg_v a_o liberty_n and_o a_o renew_n of_o the_o spirit_n that_o that_o which_o be_v please_v to_o he_o may_v be_v also_o please_v to_o we_o and_o that_o which_o be_v displease_v to_o he_o may_v be_v displease_v to_o us._n the_o last_o thing_n that_o i_o mark_n be_v this_o whereof_o come_v this_o willingness_n and_o free_a offering_n of_o ourselves_o to_o the_o service_n of_o god_n david_n note_v it_o in_o a_o word_n it_o proceed_v not_o of_o external_a worship_v but_o of_o the_o bore_v of_o the_o ear_n except_o the_o lord_n have_v prepare_v the_o ear_n of_o his_o heart_n it_o be_v not_o possible_a for_o he_o to_o will_n and_o therefore_o whosoever_o will_v be_v partaker_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o new_a testament_n let_v he_o look_v into_o himself_o how_o far_o his_o will_n be_v reform_v for_o the_o more_o we_o submit_v our_o will_n â—o_o the_o will_n of_o god_n the_o more_o we_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o new_a testament_n so_o long_o as_o we_o make_v the_o will_n of_o man_n a_o rule_n to_o our_o will_n we_o testify_v that_o we_o have_v not_o taste_v of_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o new_a testament_n only_o then_o be_v we_o partaker_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o new_a testament_n when_o the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n bow_v our_o will_n and_o make_v it_o to_o obey_v in_o some_o part_n the_o will_n of_o god_n for_o i_o mean_v not_o that_o our_o whole_a will_n can_v obey_v the_o will_n of_o god_n it_o be_v not_o possible_a so_o long_o as_o we_o be_v here_o that_o we_o can_v run_v one_o way_n if_o the_o affection_n can_v run_v one_o way_n and_o bend_v themselves_o whole_o to_o god_n in_o a_o manner_n we_o shall_v possess_v life_n eternal_a in_o this_o life_n but_o so_o long_o as_o we_o be_v here_o we_o be_v compass_v with_o two_o will_n from_o the_o which_o proceed_v too_o sort_n of_o motion_n affection_n and_o cogitation_n in_o this_o battle_n the_o regenerate_a man_n continue_v to_o the_o end_n i_o require_v not_o a_o perfection_n of_o the_o will_n or_o a_o perfection_n of_o the_o heart_n but_o i_o desire_v a_o delight_n in_o the_o law_n and_o in_o the_o love_n of_o god_n a_o will_n to_o love_n and_o a_o press_v more_o and_o more_o to_o subdue_v our_o will_n to_o the_o love_n of_o god_n where_o this_o resist_a be_v the_o battle_n be_v note_n and_o where_o a_o battle_n continue_v there_o be_v a_o true_a christian_a who_o at_o the_o last_o shall_v get_v the_o victory_n resist_v thy_o wicked_a will_n resist_v the_o motion_n thereof_o resist_v the_o cogitation_n thereof_o and_o sorrow_n for_o the_o action_n thereof_o if_o thou_o resist_v the_o motion_n and_o cogitation_n thereof_o thou_o be_v in_o good_a estate_n it_o be_v only_o the_o consent_n to_o the_o action_n and_o performance_n thereof_o that_o make_v thou_o guilty_a before_o god_n resist_v suppose_v thou_o have_v evil_a cogitation_n &_o motion_n yet_o if_o so_o be_v thou_o resist_v they_o thou_o be_v not_o guilty_a before_o god_n but_o if_o tâ—ou_a consent_n and_o that_o thou_o consent_v not_o to_o the_o action_n of_o thy_o wicked_a will_n o_o then_o it_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o great_a consequence_n to_o subdue_v &_o tame_v that_o great_a idol_n of_o evil_a
