tree_n of_o life_n rev._n 2.7_o but_o if_o he_o be_v overcome_v by_o they_o he_o be_v a_o slave_n of_o sin_n and_o a_o captive_a of_o the_o devil_n and_o a_o child_n of_o hell_n and_o heir_n of_o damnation_n but_o what_o shall_v a_o man_n do_v who_o have_v often_o thus_o relapse_v into_o sin_n after_o his_o most_o serious_a vow_n and_o resolution_n against_o it_o be_v his_o sin_n against_o use_v to_o betray_v he_o to_o it_o and_o therefore_o to_o keep_v his_o mind_n to_o a_o close_a sense_n of_o religion_n and_o to_o a_o careful_a use_n of_o all_o the_o mean_n and_o instrument_n of_o it_o and_o to_o beg_v earnest_o of_o heaven_n grace_n proportionable_a to_o his_o need_n and_o then_o if_o it_o be_v not_o his_o own_o fault_n it_o will_v certain_o be_v sufficient_a for_o he_o but_o of_o the_o divine_a goodness_n or_o the_o freeness_n and_o fullness_n of_o god_n grace_n in_o and_o through_o christ_n but_o mere_o from_o a_o false_a and_o mistake_v and_o too_o hard_a and_o humble_a a_o opinion_n of_o a_o man_n self_n and_o this_o be_v a_o fault_n not_o of_o a_o man_n will_n but_o of_o his_o judgement_n and_o a_o weakness_n and_o imperfection_n in_o his_o understanding_n for_o which_o he_o shall_v never_o be_v condemn_v by_o a_o righteous_a god_n but_o he_o will_v reverse_v this_o false_a judgement_n which_o he_o make_v of_o himself_o when_o he_o live_v or_o when_o he_o die_v and_o set_v it_o right_n in_o the_o court_n of_o heaven_n and_o do_v justice_n to_o he_o at_o the_o great_a tribunal_n though_o he_o do_v not_o do_v it_o to_o himself_o here_o that_o god_n will_v judge_v man_n according_a to_o their_o work_n be_v plain_a in_o scripture_n but_o no_o where_o that_o i_o know_v that_o he_o will_v do_v so_o according_a to_o their_o thought_n their_o vain_a hope_n and_o presumptuous_a or_o vain_a fear_n and_o trouble_n and_o doubt_n and_o even_a despair_n of_o themselves_o so_o that_o though_o this_o trouble_v of_o mind_n or_o this_o wound_a spirit_n be_v a_o comfortless_a and_o unhappy_a state_n yet_o it_o true_o depend_v upon_o the_o cause_n to_o make_v judgement_n of_o it_o or_o to_o conclude_v any_o thing_n from_o it_o and_o true_a and_o timely_a repentance_n be_v the_o best_a and_o certain_a remedy_n for_o it_o chap._n iu._n the_o ill_a consequence_n draw_v from_o the_o privilege_n of_o repentance_n obviate_v and_o prevent_v the_o most_o wicked_a and_o great_a of_o sinner_n who_o have_v any_o thought_n of_o their_o soul_n and_o of_o another_o world_n though_o they_o be_v not_o prevail_v upon_o by_o this_o to_o become_v better_a yet_o make_v this_o reserve_n and_o refuge_n to_o themselves_o that_o they_o will_v repent_v hereafter_o at_o some_o time_n or_o other_o and_o so_o escape_v the_o wrath_n to_o come_v they_o know_v and_o be_v very_o sensible_a if_o they_o have_v not_o shake_v off_o all_o religion_n and_o all_o think_v and_o consider_v of_o these_o thing_n that_o except_o they_o repent_v they_o shall_v all_o perish_v but_o they_o hope_v and_o intend_v to_o prevent_v this_o by_o the_o benefit_n of_o repentance_n and_o so_o make_v use_n of_o that_o not_o to_o bring_v they_o off_o from_o their_o sin_n but_o to_o encourage_v they_o in_o they_o with_o hope_n to_o avoid_v all_o the_o miserable_a consequence_n of_o they_o and_o yet_o live_v in_o they_o and_o so_o by_o this_o privilege_n of_o a_o after_o repentance_n they_o set_v aside_o the_o present_a necessity_n of_o a_o good_a life_n and_o whole_o destroy_v or_o supersede_n all_o religion_n i_o shall_v therefore_o endeavour_v to_o prevent_v that_o most_o common_a and_o most_o fatal_a abuse_n of_o it_o for_o i_o be_o confident_a there_o be_v more_o soul_n perish_v by_o that_o than_o by_o any_o other_o mistake_v whatsoever_o and_o a_o thousand_o time_n more_o than_o by_o downright_a infidelity_n and_o disbelief_n of_o all_o religion_n which_o be_v a_o very_a rare_a thing_n and_o it_o be_v hard_a to_o find_v out_o any_o certain_a instance_n that_o have_v ever_o be_v of_o it_o in_o the_o world_n it_o be_v so_o much_o against_o the_o natural_a sense_n and_o reason_n and_o apprehension_n of_o mankind_n but_o the_o other_o be_v the_o common_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n even_o for_o christian_n perhaps_o above_o any_o other_o to_o make_v false_a reason_n to_o themselves_o from_o this_o privilege_n of_o repentance_n which_o we_o have_v in_o the_o high_a degree_n from_o the_o gospel_n to_o think_v they_o may_v secure_v and_o save_v their_o soul_n and_o yet_o indulge_v and_o allow_v themselves_o in_o the_o present_a enjoyment_n of_o their_o sin_n because_o they_o may_v set_v all_o right_n by_o repent_v of_o they_o hereafter_o i_o shall_v therefore_o against_o this_o error_n and_o abuse_n of_o repentance_n and_o to_o obviate_v this_o mischievous_a consequence_n offer_v these_o follow_a consideration_n 1._o can_v we_o think_v a_o wise_a god_n will_v make_v such_o a_o grant_n and_o concession_n to_o his_o creature_n as_o shall_v destroy_v all_o religion_n and_o make_v void_a the_o necessity_n of_o obedience_n and_o a_o good_a life_n which_o according_a to_o these_o man_n thought_n be_v unavoidable_o do_v by_o this_o gospel-priviledge_n of_o repentance_n for_o since_o say_v they_o a_o man_n be_v as_o certain_o safe_a who_o come_v in_o at_o any_o time_n upon_o repentance_n and_o shall_v be_v as_o certain_o save_v by_o the_o term_n and_o condition_n of_o the_o gospel_n as_o if_o he_o have_v spend_v all_o his_o life_n in_o the_o strict_a virtue_n and_o religion_n what_o need_n be_v there_o of_o such_o a_o early_a and_o constant_a and_o perpetual_a obedience_n and_o spend_v a_o whole_a life_n in_o the_o servitude_n and_o drudgery_n of_o religion_n when_o come_v in_o at_o the_o eleven_o hour_n and_o work_v but_o a_o short_a space_n at_o the_o latter_a end_n of_o the_o day_n will_v have_v as_o much_o wage_n and_o as_o sure_a a_o reward_n and_o be_v as_o certain_o accept_v by_o god_n shall_v not_o a_o sinner_n when_o ever_o he_o return_v and_o repent_v find_v mercy_n be_v there_o any_o time_n or_o bound_n prefix_v to_o his_o repentance_n so_o that_o he_o may_v not_o do_v it_o so_o many_o year_n hence_o as_o well_o as_o at_o present_a and_o after_o he_o have_v
restitution_n for_o it_o even_o before_o he_o be_v apprehend_v and_o before_o the_o thought_n and_o terror_n of_o death_n fright_v he_o into_o it_o and_o herein_o may_v lie_v a_o mighty_a difference_n for_o if_o a_o man_n upon_o the_o reflection_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o a_o wicked_a life_n and_o the_o serious_a consideration_n of_o the_o great_a danger_n he_o be_v in_o thereby_o shall_v by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n set_v these_o thing_n home_o upon_o his_o mind_n strong_o fix_v and_o exciting_a these_o thought_n in_o he_o shall_v be_v bring_v to_o good_a purpose_n and_o resolution_n of_o become_v better_a and_o do_v strengthen_v and_o make_v good_a these_o by_o his_o action_n and_o thus_o begin_v to_o be_v good_a and_o cease_v to_o be_v wicked_a not_o from_o a_o sudden_a fright_n and_o fear_n of_o death_n but_o from_o the_o conviction_n of_o religion_n from_o the_o free_a and_o full_a persuasion_n of_o his_o own_o mind_n which_o be_v like_a to_o remain_v and_o continue_v with_o he_o this_o put_v he_o into_o a_o much_o better_a state_n and_o condition_n and_o be_v more_o true_o repentance_n than_o that_o which_o arise_v in_o man_n when_o they_o come_v to_o die_v when_o they_o have_v a_o force_n put_v upon_o they_o which_o almost_o take_v away_o the_o true_a freedom_n and_o liberty_n of_o their_o will_n and_o therefore_o what_o they_o do_v then_o be_v owe_v whole_o to_o that_o and_o cease_v general_o when_o that_o be_v remove_v as_o to_o the_o thief_n we_o know_v not_o what_o his_o case_n be_v and_o therefore_o it_o be_v mere_a conjecture_n to_o suppose_v he_o do_v not_o repent_v till_o he_o come_v to_o die_v and_o it_o be_v the_o most_o groundless_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n to_o apply_v his_o case_n to_o that_o of_o a_o wicked_a man_n who_o repent_v not_o till_o he_o find_v he_o must_v quick_o die_v when_o so_o far_o as_o we_o know_v his_o be_v perfect_o different_a that_o he_o be_v neither_o a_o very_a wicked_a man_n in_o the_o general_a course_n of_o his_o life_n and_o as_o for_o that_o single_a act_n of_o wickedness_n which_o be_v record_v of_o he_o that_o he_o may_v repent_v of_o it_o as_o soon_o as_o he_o commit_v it_o and_o that_o may_v be_v many_o year_n before_o he_o suffer_v for_o it_o we_o have_v no_o certain_a knowledge_n of_o any_o of_o these_o thing_n and_o therefore_o we_o can_v make_v no_o certain_a judgement_n by_o it_o much_o less_o raise_v a_o doctrine_n from_o it_o which_o suppose_v those_o two_o thing_n which_o so_o far_o as_o we_o know_v may_v be_v both_o false_a and_o than_o who_o will_v venture_v his_o soul_n upon_o such_o a_o mere_a uncertainty_n as_o that_o another_o man_n who_o he_o know_v very_o little_a of_o do_v not_o repent_v till_o he_o come_v to_o die_v and_o live_v very_o ill_a all_o the_o while_n before_o neither_o of_o which_o may_v be_v true_a but_o if_o they_o be_v yet_o 3._o how_o can_v he_o tell_v but_o this_o may_v be_v a_o extraordinary_a case_n and_o such_o as_o no_o way_n belong_v to_o he_o nor_o to_o any_o other_o sinner_n whatsoever_o what_o if_o christ_n to_o show_v the_o wonderful_a and_o miraculous_a power_n of_o his_o cross_n towards_o the_o salvation_n of_o sinner_n be_v please_v to_o give_v a_o uncommon_a and_o extraordinary_a instance_n of_o it_o at_o that_o time_n such_o as_o no_o other_o sinner_n shall_v ever_o expect_v the_o like_a unless_o christ_n shall_v again_o come_v down_o and_o die_v upon_o the_o cross_n with_o he_o what_o if_o god_n who_o will_v have_v mercy_n on_o who_o he_o will_v have_v mercy_n be_v please_v to_o let_v this_o penitent_a thief_n be_v a_o singular_a example_n of_o his_o unlimited_a power_n and_o prerogative_n to_o save_v beyond_o all_o ordinary_a rule_n because_o of_o his_o die_v at_o that_o time_n with_o christ_n this_o do_v no_o more_o make_v it_o to_o be_v a_o stand_n and_o certain_a measure_n of_o his_o deal_n with_o other_o than_o a_o prince_n show_v some_o extraordinary_a act_n of_o mercy_n to_o a_o few_o person_n when_o he_o come_v first_o to_o his_o crown_n and_o release_n all_o prisoner_n at_o his_o inauguration_n declare_v that_o this_o shall_v be_v the_o constant_a rule_n of_o his_o government_n or_o that_o his_o subject_n shall_v have_v reason_n to_o expect_v this_o at_o other_o time_n from_o he_o thus_o the_o case_n may_v be_v extraordinary_a as_o to_o god_n but_o i_o rather_o receive_v into_o his_o kingdom_n can_v a_o wicked_a and_o careless_a sinner_n who_o have_v deny_v christ_n by_o his_o life_n who_o have_v affront_v disobey_v and_o contemn_v he_o who_o in_o the_o language_n of_o scripture_n have_v crucify_v to_o himself_o the_o son_n of_o god_n afresh_o and_o put_v he_o to_o a_o open_a shame_n heb._n 6.6_o by_o apostatise_v from_o his_o baptism_n and_o by_o a_o unchristian_a life_n can_v such_o a_o one_o expect_v to_o have_v the_o same_o treatment_n and_o usage_n from_o our_o saviour_n for_o a_o few_o die_a sorrow_n and_o empty_a vow_n and_o little_a remorse_n as_o this_o famous_a convert_n this_o great_a confessor_n this_o eminent_a martyr_n this_o apostle_n of_o christ_n as_o i_o may_v call_v he_o who_o preach_v he_o upon_o the_o cross_n before_o his_o great_a enemy_n and_o seal_v his_o illustrious_a faith_n in_o he_o with_o his_o die_a word_n and_o his_o last_o breath_n no_o sure_o the_o case_n must_v be_v very_o different_a between_o he_o and_o a_o ordinary_a and_o profligate_v sinner_n a_o wicked_a and_o vile_a christian_a i_o do_v not_o think_v any_o far_o fetch_v notion_n necessary_a to_o salve_v this_o matter_n of_o the_o thief_n salvation_n by_o suppose_v he_o with_o a_o late_a author_n to_o have_v the_o benefit_n of_o baptism_n the_o baptismus_fw-la sanguinis_fw-la and_o then_o that_o baptism_n will_v save_v a_o man_n without_o obedience_n and_o a_o good_a life_n for_o i_o deny_v that_o baptism_n have_v any_o such_o grace_n or_o benefit_n as_o without_o those_o to_o save_v a_o wicked_a man_n though_o he_o shall_v be_v baptise_a in_o articulo_fw-la mortis_fw-la when_o he_o be_v just_o a_o die_a for_o if_o a_o new_o baptise_a person_n be_v not_o actual_o a_o good_a man_n in_o such_o a_o degree_n as_o god_n will_v accept_v by_o the_o term_n of_o the_o gospel_n his_o baptism_n shall_v not_o save_v he_o though_o it_o put_v he_o into_o a_o state_n of_o salvation_n if_o he_o be_v so_o but_o not_o otherwise_o as_o be_v plain_a by_o simon_n magus_n for_o the_o condition_n of_o salvation_n be_v not_o specifical_o different_a before_o baptism_n and_o after_o but_o only_o gradual_o if_o they_o be_v a_o man_n will_v defer_v his_o baptism_n till_o near_o his_o death_n as_o some_o do_v of_o old_a upon_o this_o mistake_a notion_n of_o such_o a_o baptismal_a grace_n as_o save_v a_o man_n by_o a_o outward_a without_o a_o inward_a regeneration_n and_o real_a holiness_n the_o actual_a proof_n and_o sign_n of_o which_o the_o primitive_a church_n require_v in_o the_o adult_n before_o they_o admit_v they_o to_o
baptism_n and_o therefore_o to_o suppose_v a_o man_n may_v be_v save_v upon_o baptism_n though_o he_o be_v not_o a_o good_a man_n be_v not_o allowable_a but_o if_o he_o die_v just_a upon_o it_o god_n will_v judge_v he_o according_a to_o the_o present_a temper_n of_o his_o mind_n and_o the_o past_a course_n of_o his_o action_n allow_v he_o the_o gracious_a term_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o he_o have_v now_o a_o right_a to_o by_o his_o baptism_n but_o to_o think_v he_o can_v be_v save_v without_o any_o actual_a goodness_n in_o his_o mind_n and_o in_o his_o life_n be_v i_o think_v very_o false_a though_o a_o less_o degree_n may_v save_v he_o that_o know_v not_o baptism_n or_o christianity_n than_o he_o that_o do_v but_o as_o for_o the_o baptism_n of_o blood_n or_o allow_v martyrdom_n the_o privilege_n of_o baptism_n this_o be_v not_o found_v upon_o ordinary_a right_n but_o presumptive_a equity_n and_o salvation_n be_v allow_v to_o they_o because_o no_o man_n but_o must_v be_v presume_v to_o be_v a_o very_a good_a man_n and_o have_v a_o high_a degree_n of_o actual_a virtue_n and_o holiness_n who_o die_v a_o martyr_n and_o prefer_v religion_n before_o every_o thing_n in_o this_o world_n even_o his_o very_a life_n and_o without_o this_o in_o some_o high_a measure_n than_o mere_a purpose_n and_o resolution_n and_o mere_a sorrow_n and_o repentance_n for_o not_o have_v it_o i_o deny_v that_o any_o baptism_n or_o any_o thing_n else_o will_v save_v a_o man._n this_o i_o say_v to_o prevent_v a_o objection_n that_o it_o will_v not_o otherwise_o be_v easy_a to_o answer_v superstitious_a error_n at_o the_o bottom_n sect_n ii_o the_o plea_n and_o pretence_n on_o behalf_n of_o a_o deathbed_n repentance_n answer_v have_v show_v that_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o the_o case_n of_o the_o thief_n upon_o the_o cross_n to_o support_v or_o justify_v the_o validity_n and_o efficacy_n of_o a_o deathbed_n repentance_n i_o shall_v now_o examine_v the_o other_o plea_n and_o pretence_n which_o be_v bring_v for_o it_o and_o show_v how_o weak_a and_o ungrounded_a they_o be_v so_o that_o no_o man_n may_v believe_v such_o a_o dangerous_a and_o mistake_a doctrine_n nor_o venture_v his_o soul_n not_o only_o upon_o such_o a_o uncertain_a hazard_n but_o such_o a_o certain_a danger_n and_o inevitable_a ruin_n as_o that_o will_v bring_v upon_o he_o if_o he_o presume_v suppose_v that_o feel_n the_o smart_n of_o a_o wound_n be_v heal_v it_o as_o mere_a sorrow_n for_o sin_n be_v true_a repentance_n few_o sinner_n and_o few_o malefactor_n but_o be_v thus_o sorrowful_a when_o they_o come_v near_o the_o place_n of_o punishment_n and_o execution_n they_o be_v sorry_a they_o must_v suffer_v for_o their_o sin_n and_o the_o terror_n of_o their_o suffering_n make_v sin_n very_o bitter_a to_o they_o but_o if_o that_o be_v remove_v they_o will_v love_v they_o and_o commit_v they_o perhaps_o as_o much_o as_o ever_o if_o sorrow_n alone_o for_o sin_n though_o never_o so_o the_o thing_n shall_v not_o be_v or_o never_o be_v without_o regard_n to_o any_o such_o opinion_n which_o we_o have_v not_o sufficient_a authority_n to_o prove_v the_o jew_n have_v but_o only_o that_o high_a measure_n and_o yet_o be_v not_o where_o declare_v to_o be_v unpardonable_a ananias_n be_v say_v to_o lie_v to_o the_o holy_a ghost_n act_v 5.3_o and_o to_o tempt_v the_o spirit_n of_o the_o its_o literal_a and_o rigorous_a sense_n but_o so_o as_o to_o import_v the_o great_a guilt_n of_o the_o sin_n and_o difficulty_n of_o its_o pardon_n but_o not_o the_o utter_a impossibility_n or_o else_o 2._o that_o there_o be_v some_o particular_a circumstance_n in_o that_o sin_n of_o the_o pharisee_n which_o make_v it_o a_o sin_n proper_a to_o they_o in_o those_o time_n and_o such_o as_o christian_n be_v not_o now_o in_o any_o possible_a danger_n of_o commit_v for_o though_o we_o have_v sufficient_a reason_n to_o believe_v the_o truth_n of_o christianity_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o the_o miracle_n do_v by_o our_o saviour_n and_o we_o have_v a_o unquestioned_a assurance_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o those_o from_o undoubted_a history_n and_o universal_a testimony_n and_o tradition_n yet_o we_o can_v have_v that_o ocular_a evidence_n and_o visible_a demonstration_n of_o they_o that_o the_o jew_n and_o pharisee_n have_v and_o therefore_o if_o any_o of_o the_o jew_n in_o our_o day_n who_o have_v swallow_v many_o of_o they_o this_o blasphemous_a account_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o miracle_n that_o he_o do_v they_o all_o by_o the_o power_n of_o magic_n which_o he_o learn_v in_o egypt_n if_o they_o do_v now_o vent_v this_o horrid_a calumny_n yet_o i_o think_v they_o be_v not_o so_o perfect_o criminal_a nor_o be_v this_o so_o high_a a_o degree_n of_o villainy_n in_o they_o as_o it_o be_v in_o their_o forefather_n who_o see_v the_o very_a miracle_n do_v before_o their_o face_n which_o be_v the_o high_a evidence_n that_o can_v be_v and_o unless_o the_o person_n be_v in_o all_o those_o circumstance_n that_o they_o be_v which_o will_v make_v he_o a_o great_a deal_n more_o inexcusable_a i_o question_v whether_o he_o can_v be_v charge_v with_o this_o sin_n and_o therefore_o as_o a_o conclusion_n from_o the_o whole_a and_o as_o the_o most_o useful_a remark_n from_o this_o subject_a i_o shall_v advise_v these_o two_o thing_n 1._o that_o no_o sinner_n be_v discourage_v from_o leave_v his_o sin_n howsoever_o great_a nor_o from_o hope_n of_o the_o divine_a mercy_n upon_o any_o ungrounded_a fear_n that_o he_o be_v fall_v into_o this_o sin_n and_o so_o be_v in_o a_o hopeless_a irrecoverable_a unpardonable_a state_n by_o what_o have_v be_v say_v it_o appear_v that_o no_o one_o now_o have_v reason_n to_o do_v this_o and_o it_o be_v certain_o the_o great_a design_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o our_o saviour_n come_v into_o the_o world_n to_o persuade_v mankind_n that_o be_v sink_v into_o the_o sad_a sin_n and_o wickedness_n to_o repent_v and_o forsake_v all_o their_o evil_a way_n and_o there_o be_v no_o such_o mean_n to_o encourage_v to_o this_o as_o to_o assure_v they_o of_o the_o divine_a mercy_n and_o the_o certain_a forgiveness_n of_o all_o of_o they_o if_o they_o do_v it_o be_v this_o be_v the_o way_n to_o bring_v man_n in_o to_o their_o duty_n and_o allegiance_n when_o their_o governor_n proclaim_v a_o universal_a act_n of_o grace_n for_o what_o be_v past_a whereas_o the_o be_v cut_v off_o from_o all_o such_o hope_n make_v they_o go_v on_o and_o grow_v more_o desperate_a and_o it_o be_v by_o this_o goodness_n and_o mercy_n of_o god_n hold_v forth_o to_o all_o sinner_n and_o so_o full_o display_v in_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n that_o we_o be_v lead_v to_o repentance_n and_o therefore_o it_o ought_v by_o no_o mean_n to_o be_v lessen_v or_o diminish_v unless_o we_o will_v make_v god_n less_o good_a than_o he_o
