94._o 12._o bless_a be_v the_o man_n who_o thou_o chastene_v and_o teach_v out_o of_o thy_o law_n it_o be_v then_o happy_a when_o correction_n and_o instruction_n go_v together_o 3._o as_o affliction_n be_v fruit_n of_o sin_n and_o of_o themselves_o do_v no_o good_a so_o oftentimes_o through_o man_n corruption_n they_o prove_v occasion_n of_o sin_n they_o be_v so_o far_o from_o make_v man_n better_a that_o they_o often_o make_v man_n worse_o i_o have_v show_v before_o what_o evil_n be_v incident_a both_o to_o a_o state_n of_o prosperity_n and_o adversity_n satan_n know_v how_o to_o make_v affliction_n to_o become_v temptation_n and_o therefore_o we_o find_v this_o to_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o agur_n pray_v against_o poverty_n prov._n 30._o 9_o lest_o i_o be_v poor_a and_o steal_n and_o the_o name_n of_o god_n be_v take_v in_o vain_a q._n d._n poverty_n may_v put_v i_o under_o a_o temptation_n of_o use_v unlawful_a mean_n to_o the_o dishonour_n of_o god_n thus_o affliction_n prove_v sometime_o occasion_n of_o sin_n and_o we_o be_v teach_v to_o pray_v that_o we_o may_v not_o be_v lead_v into_o temptation_n 4._o consider_v again_o this_o that_o the_o saint_n and_o servant_n of_o god_n have_v pray_v against_o affliction_n so_o they_o have_v pray_v for_o 1._o the_o prevent_v of_o they_o and_o keep_v they_o off_o 2._o the_o remove_v they_o and_o take_v they_o off_o 1._o for_o the_o prevent_v they_o and_o keep_v they_o off._n thus_o do_v agur_n prov._n 30._o 8_o 9_o where_o you_o have_v his_o prayer_n first_o against_o the_o evil_n of_o sin_n ver._n 7._o take_v from_o i_o vanity_n and_o lie_v next_o against_o the_o evil_n of_o affliction_n ver._n 8._o give_v i_o not_o poverty_n 2._o they_o have_v pray_v for_o the_o remove_n they_o and_o take_v they_o off_o and_o those_o have_v do_v it_o who_o get_v as_o much_o good_a by_o their_o affliction_n as_o any_o under_o heaven_n thus_o david_n psal_n 39_o 10._o take_v away_o thy_o stroke_n from_o i_o psal_n 119._o 22._o turn_v away_o shame_n and_o reproach_n from_o i_o thus_o do_v job_n job_n 9_o 34._o let_v he_o take_v away_o his_o rod_n from_o i_o job_n 13._o 20_o 21._o withdraw_v thy_o hand_n from_o i_o etc._n etc._n where_o he_o pray_v for_o god_n take_v away_o his_o afflict_a rod_n and_o for_o his_o withdraw_a his_o afflict_a hand_n and_o these_o two_o man_n get_v as_o much_o good_a by_o their_o be_v afflict_a as_o ever_o any_o do_v thus_o in_o general_n you_o see_v what_o we_o answer_v to_o the_o question_n whether_o evil_n of_o affliction_n may_v be_v pray_v against_o ii_o we_o come_v to_o give_v a_o more_o particular_a answer_n to_o the_o question_n and_o tell_v you_o that_o though_o we_o say_v it_o be_v lawful_a to_o pray_v against_o affliction_n yet_o it_o must_v be_v with_o the_o observation_n of_o some_o rule_n and_o caution_n and_o direction_n that_o as_o our_o saviour_n say_v in_o another_o case_n concern_v hearing_n take_v heed_n how_o you_o hear_v so_o in_o this_o case_n of_o pray_v against_o affliction_n we_o say_v take_v heed_n how_o you_o pray_v so_o consider_v there_o be_v a_o double_a pray_v against_o affliction_n as_o i_o tell_v you_o before_o 1._o for_o the_o keep_v they_o off_o 2._o for_o the_o take_v they_o off_o 1._o for_o the_o keep_v they_o off_o so_o there_o be_v a_o twofold_a pray_v for_o the_o keep_v off_o affliction_n 1._o absolute_a 2._o conditional_a and_o with_o submission_n 1._o absolute_a when_o man_n pray_v that_o in_o no_o case_n the_o evil_a may_v happen_v to_o they_o so_o make_v their_o will_n a_o law_n to_o god_n this_o pray_v against_o affliction_n be_v unwarrantable_a and_o unlawful_a we_o must_v know_v for_o moral_a evil_n of_o sin_n we_o may_v pray_v absolute_o against_o but_o not_o so_o against_o the_o evil_n of_o affliction_n 2._o there_o be_v a_o pray_v against_o they_o that_o be_v conditional_a &_o with_o submission_n to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n this_o be_v lawful_a our_o saviour_n himself_o pray_v that_o the_o cup_n may_v pass_v from_o he_o but_o add_v this_o not_o my_o will_n but_o thou_o be_v do_v our_o pray_v against_o affliction_n be_v then_o right_a when_o there_o be_v a_o sweet_a submission_n of_o our_o will_n to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n so_o that_o though_o we_o know_v that_o affliction_n be_v grievous_a to_o our_o nature_n yet_o because_o we_o know_v not_o what_o the_o decree_n and_o purpose_n of_o god_n be_v concern_v we_o and_o not_o know_v but_o that_o he_o may_v see_v they_o good_a for_o we_o and_o make_v they_o good_a to_o we_o we_o do_v sweet_o submit_v our_o will_n to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o proclaim_v liberty_n to_o he_o to_o deal_v with_o we_o as_o he_o please_v and_o herein_o be_v the_o work_n of_o grace_n see_v that_o though_o nature_n desire_v whole_o to_o be_v free_v from_o they_o they_o be_v such_o thing_n as_o be_v bitter_a to_o it_o yet_o a_o christian_a leau_n himself_o whole_o to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o say_v not_o my_o will_n but_o thou_o be_v do_v when_o christian_n see_v the_o cup_n of_o affliction_n prepare_v for_o they_o or_o come_v towards_o they_o they_o must_v pray_v against_o it_o only_o as_o our_o saviour_n do_v it_o be_v then_o right_a when_o in_o pray_v against_o affliction_n we_o pray_v absolute_o that_o god_n may_v be_v glorify_v but_o for_o the_o thing_n that_o concern_v ourselves_o we_o pray_v with_o submission_n to_o his_o will._n thus_o christ_n do_v john_n 12._o 27_o 28._o save_v i_o from_o this_o hour_n but_o for_o this_o cause_n come_v i_o to_o this_o hour_n father_n glorify_v thyself_o our_o saviour_n be_v absolute_a in_o that_o request_n of_o he_o that_o his_o father_n will_v glorify_v his_o name_n and_o receive_v a_o answer_n but_o for_o the_o other_o request_n he_o sweet_o submit_v to_o his_o father_n be_v will._n thus_o do_v a_o gracious_a heart_n pray_v absolute_o that_o god_n may_v be_v glorify_v let_v it_o be_v in_o relation_n to_o himself_o which_o way_n the_o lord_n please_v thus_o in_o desire_v freedom_n from_o affliction_n though_o a_o gracious_a heart_n look_v upon_o it_o as_o desirable_a to_o nature_n to_o be_v free_v from_o loss_n and_o cross_n sickness_n and_o poverty_n &c_n &c_n yet_o he_o look_v upon_o god_n glory_n as_o that_o that_o be_v to_o prefer_v before_o its_o own_o worldly_a welfare_n ease_n quiet_n contentment_n and_o comfort_n whereas_o some_o may_v say_v that_o agur_n pray_v absolute_o against_o poverty_n prov._n 30._o 8_o 9_o give_v i_o not_o poverty_n etc._n etc._n we_o answer_v that_o though_o it_o look_v like_o a_o absolute_a request_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o if_o we_o look_v upon_o the_o reason_n of_o the_o request_n verse_n 9_o we_o shall_v find_v that_o he_o pray_v absolute_o only_o in_o relation_n
