thing_n sacred_a a_o general_n corruption_n of_o manner_n and_o a_o inundation_n of_o wickedness_n such_o nation_n seldom_o escape_v long_o without_o a_o severe_a scourge_n unless_o god_n make_v use_v of_o they_o to_o scourge_v other_o nation_n as_o wicked_a as_o themselves_o but_o a_o righteous_a and_o religious_a nation_n which_o preserve_v justice_n among_o man_n and_o the_o knowledge_n and_o reverence_n and_o worship_n of_o god_n be_v the_o darling_n and_o favourite_n of_o providence_n and_o be_v bless_v with_o all_o prosperous_a success_n both_o at_o home_o and_o abroad_o so_o the_o wise_a man_n tell_v we_o that_o righteousness_n exalt_v a_o nation_n but_o sin_n be_v the_o reproach_n of_o any_o people_n thus_o it_o be_v apt_a to_o do_v of_o itself_o but_o the_o divine_a justice_n and_o providence_n take_v care_n that_o it_o shall_v do_v so_o for_o though_o every_o particular_a good_a man_n be_v not_o reward_v nor_o every_o particular_a bad_a man_n punish_v in_o this_o world_n virtue_n where_o we_o must_v learn_v to_o govern_v our_o passion_n and_o appetite_n to_o conquer_v vicious_a habit_n and_o to_o live_v above_o the_o body_n and_o the_o pleasure_n of_o it_o to_o forgive_v injury_n to_o love_v enemy_n to_o suffer_v patient_o to_o be_v content_v with_o a_o little_a to_o trust_v providence_n to_o live_v by_o faith_n and_o hope_n of_o unseen_a thing_n now_o such_o a_o state_n as_o this_o will_v not_o admit_v of_o a_o exact_a distribution_n of_o reward_n and_o punishment_n bad_a man_n must_v not_o always_o be_v punish_v for_o their_o sin_n because_o sometime_o external_n prosperity_n and_o a_o sense_n of_o the_o divine_a goodness_n may_v work_v more_o kind_o on_o they_o or_o if_o they_o be_v punish_v their_o punishment_n must_v be_v rather_o it_o and_o this_o be_v make_v a_o great_a objection_n against_o providence_n that_o many_o bad_a man_n be_v prosperous_a and_o many_o good_a man_n afflict_v and_o a_o foolish_a objection_n it_o be_v against_o providence_n but_o a_o very_a good_a argument_n for_o a_o future_a judgement_n when_o we_o have_v so_o many_o argument_n to_o prove_v that_o god_n do_v govern_v the_o world_n that_o he_o do_v even_o in_o this_o life_n reward_v good_a man_n and_o punish_v the_o wicked_a as_o much_o as_o be_v necessary_a for_o the_o good_a government_n of_o the_o world_n it_o be_v very_o absurd_a to_o confute_v all_o this_o only_a by_o say_v that_o he_o do_v not_o govern_v the_o world_n as_o we_o think_v he_o ought_v to_o govern_v it_o that_o be_v that_o he_o do_v not_o punish_v every_o bad_a man_n nor_o reward_v every_o good_a man_n in_o this_o life_n whoever_o will_v make_v good_a this_o argument_n must_v prove_v that_o there_o be_v no_o other_o world_n after_o this_o wherein_o god_n can_v that_o there_o be_v some_o other_o judgement_n to_o come_v beside_o what_o god_n exercise_v in_o this_o world_n for_o it_o be_v certain_a if_o god_n judge_v the_o world_n at_o all_o he_o will_v this_o be_v there_o any_o live_n in_o the_o world_n without_o judge_v of_o man_n and_o thing_n must_v we_o not_o say_v that_o he_o be_v a_o very_a bad_a man_n who_o we_o see_v do_v very_o bad_a thing_n must_v we_o not_o distinguish_v between_o virtue_n and_o vice_n and_o between_o good_a and_o bad_a man_n must_v we_o not_o make_v good_a man_n our_o friend_n commend_v and_o imitate_v their_o virtue_n and_o reject_v the_o conversation_n of_o the_o wicked_a and_o beware_v of_o knave_n and_o man_n of_o ill_a principle_n and_o design_n and_o be_v it_o not_o necessary_a then_o to_o distinguish_v between_o good_a and_o bad_a man_n that_o be_v to_o judge_v who_o be_v so_o must_v we_o whole_o refer_v the_o punishment_n of_o wickedness_n and_o the_o reward_n of_o virtue_n to_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n and_o because_o god_n will_v judge_v the_o world_n must_v not_o prince_n and_o magistrate_n execute_v justice_n and_o separate_v between_o the_o pure_a and_o the_o vile_a this_o gospel_n too_o that_o those_o who_o never_o hear_v of_o the_o gospel_n shall_v be_v judge_v without_o the_o gospel_n and_o who_o can_v tell_v what_o this_o signify_v what_o mighty_a allowance_n god_n may_v make_v for_o their_o invincible_a ignorances_n and_o the_o unhappy_a circumstance_n of_o their_o education_n who_o can_v tell_v how_o little_a god_n will_v accept_v from_o those_o to_o who_o we_o and_o our_o child_n and_o to_o say_v that_o such_o child_n die_v after_o baptism_n before_o they_o have_v commit_v any_o actual_a sin_n shall_v certain_o be_v save_v be_v not_o a_o act_n of_o judgement_n but_o only_o a_o declare_v the_o virtue_n and_o efficacy_n of_o baptismal_a grace_n and_o regeneration_n that_o the_o grace_n of_o baptism_n will_v save_v those_o who_o do_v not_o afterward_o forfeit_a this_o grace_n by_o wilful_a sin_n and_o therefore_o if_o the_o child_n of_o christian_a parent_n have_v a_o right_n to_o baptism_n they_o have_v a_o right_n to_o the_o since_o we_o know_v that_o he_o will_v demand_v a_o account_n of_o we_o but_o a_o mere_a belief_n that_o we_o shall_v be_v judge_v will_v not_o do_v this_o unless_o we_o affect_v our_o soul_n with_o will_v melt_v and_o open_v that_o heart_n which_o be_v harden_v and_o shut_v against_o all_o the_o argument_n and_o motive_n to_o charity_n and_o long_o and_o frequent_a consideration_n will_v have_v much_o the_o same_o effect_n on_o we_o that_o sight_n have_v judgement_n be_v a_o terrible_a thing_n to_o bad_a man_n and_o if_o they_o will_v but_o serious_o think_v of_o it_o it_o will_v terrify_v they_o if_o they_o will_v but_o imagine_v sometime_o that_o they_o hear_v that_o last-trumpet_n sound_n which_o will_v awaken_v all-mankind_n and_o raise_v they_o out_o of_o their_o grave_n and_o summon_v they_o to_o judgement_n that_o they_o see_v the_o son_n of_o man_n descend_v from_o heaven_n attend_v with_o his_o mighty_a angel_n to_o execute_v vengeance_n on_o all_o they_o who_o know_v not_o god_n and_o obey_v not_o the_o gospel_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n that_o they_o see_v the_o earth_n all_o in_o flame_n about_o they_o and_o hell_n open_v her_o mouth_n wide_a to_o receive_v they_o that_o they_o see_v the_o book_n open_v and_o those_o sin_n record_v which_o they_o have_v forget_v and_o the_o secret_n of_o their_o heart_n disclose_v and_o that_o they_o hear_v that_o terrible_a sentence_n go_v you_o curse_v into_o everlasting_a fire_n prepare_v for_o the_o devil_n and_o his_o angel_n do_v yâ—â—_n think_v that_o any_o man_n who_o believe_v all_o this_o and_o will_v suffer_v himself_o serious_o to_o think_v of_o it_o can_v bear_v up_o against_o the_o terror_n of_o it_o or_o that_o with_o these_o thought_n about_o he_o he_o can_v court_v a_o strumpet_n or_o spend_v his_o time_n in_o revel_n and_o excess_n or_o blaspheme_n god_n and_o ridicule_n religion_n or_o cheat_v his_o neighbour_n or_o oppress_v the_o poor_a and_o fatherless_a or_o forswear_v himself_o noâ—_n we_o see_v this_o can_v be_v as_o often_o as_o we_o see_v â—_o miserable_a sinner_n who_o awaken_v conscience_n distract_v he_o with_o all_o these_o scene_n and_o image_n of_o terror_n so_o that_o serious_a consideration_n will_v make_v a_o future_a judgement_n very_o effectual_a to_o govern_v our_o life_n but_o the_o great_a difficulty_n of_o all_o be_v to_o bring_v man_n to_o consider_v and_o yet_o one_o will_v think_v it_o impossible_a that_o a_o reasonable_a creature_n shall_v not_o consider_v that_o he_o must_v be_v judge_v but_o so_o it_o be_v and_o there_o be_v no_o dispute_v against_o experience_n and_o yet_o it_o be_v so_o dangerous_a and_o fatal_a a_o neglect_n that_o it_o concern_v we_o to_o inquire_v into_o the_o cause_n and_o remedy_n of_o it_o for_o can_v we_o cure_v this_o it_o will_v quick_o reform_v the_o world_n give_v a_o new_a resurrection_n to_o piety_n and_o virtue_n and_o secure_a man_n from_o the_o danger_n and_o terror_n of_o a_o future_a judgement_n now_o there_o be_v two_o apparent_a cause_n of_o this_o 1._o that_o the_o thought_n of_o judgement_n be_v very_o uneasy_a and_o troublesome_a and_o that_o make_v man_n afraid_a and_o averse_a to_o think_v of_o it_o and_o 2._o that_o judgement_n be_v out_o of_o sight_n and_o they_o have_v nothing_o to_o mind_v they_o of_o it_o and_o their_o thought_n be_v so_o take_v up_o with_o other_o matter_n that_o they_o forget_v it_o unless_o they_o happen_v to_o hear_v a_o sermon_n about_o it_o or_o some_o accidental_a mention_n of_o it_o which_o when_o they_o return_v to_o their_o worldly_a affair_n and_o business_n they_o quick_o forget_v again_o 1_o sy_n man_n be_v very_o apt_a to_o avoid_v all_o thought_n of_o judgement_n because_o they_o be_v very_o uneasy_a and_o troublesome_a they_o startle_v at_o the_o mention_n of_o it_o at_o least_o do_v not_o love_v to_o talk_v too_o long_o nor_o think_v too_o serious_o of_o it_o for_o it_o awaken_v their_o conscience_n and_o make_v they_o think_v what_o a_o sad_a account_n they_o have_v to_o give_v how_o many_o thing_n they_o have_v do_v and_o daily_o do_v which_o they_o can_v never_o answer_v to_o god_n when_o he_o come_v to_o judgement_n and_o therefore_o they_o choose_v to_o live_v quiet_o without_o disturb_v themselves_o with_o such_o terrify_a reflection_n and_o the_o amaze_a thought_n of_o what_o be_v to_o come_v now_o methinks_v it_o be_v no_o hard_a thing_n to_o convince_v think_v man_n of_o the_o danger_n and_o folly_n of_o this_o and_o to_o reconcile_v they_o to_o the_o thought_n of_o judgement_n judgement_n time_n enough_o to_o be_v condemn_v to_o hell_n and_o who_o do_v not_o think_v it_o misery_n enough_o to_o fall_v under_o the_o power_n of_o evil_a spirit_n in_o the_o mean_a time_n if_o god_n think_v this_o punishment_n enough_o methinks_v sinner_n shall_v and_o those_o who_o can_v fear_v hell_n at_o the_o distance_n of_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n will_v not_o fear_v hell_n though_o it_o be_v no_o far_o off_o than_o death_n those_o who_o be_v not_o afraid_a of_o be_v torment_v as_o dives_n be_v when_o they_o go_v out_o of_o these_o body_n will_v not_o fear_v hell_n though_o we_o allow_v hell_n to_o be_v a_o state_n of_o more_o perfect_a misery_n i_o be_o sure_a dives_n think_v those_o torment_n so_o great_a that_o they_o be_v sufficient_a to_o have_v make_v conscience_n threaten_v the_o judgement_n of_o god_n against_o sinner_n yet_o the_o experience_n of_o the_o world_n tell_v we_o that_o most_o man_n flatter_v themselves_o that_o god_n may_v be_v appease_v and_o reconcile_v to_o they_o without_o forsake_v their_o sin_n not_o only_o the_o heathen_n but_o even_o jew_n themselves_o think_v this_o may_v be_v do_v by_o their_o sacrifice_n and_o the_o other_o external_a rite_n and_o ceremony_n of_o their_o religion_n as_o appear_v from_o the_o frequent_a complaint_n of_o
the_o prophet_n about_o this_o matter_n and_o though_o it_o can_v be_v deny_v but_o that_o many_o christian_n deceive_v themselves_o with_o the_o same_o vain_a hope_n yet_o this_o be_v much_o more_o unpardonable_a in_o they_o because_o god_n have_v give_v a_o more_o undeniable_a proof_n of_o the_o evil_a of_o sin_n and_o his_o irrecoverable_a displeasure_n against_o it_o than_o either_o jew_n or_o heathen_n have_v for_o can_v there_o be_v a_o more_o certain_a evidence_n of_o the_o evil_a of_o sin_n than_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n he_o die_v for_o sin_n and_o as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v a_o very_a dangerous_a thing_n to_o commit_v sin_n but_o now_o christ_n have_v righteousness_n and_o merit_n enough_o for_o we_o all_o and_o we_o need_v none_o of_o our_o own_o nothing_o but_o faith_n to_o apply_v his_o righteousness_n to_o we_o christ_n have_v pull_v out_o the_o sting_n of_o sin_n that_o it_o can_v great_o hurt_v it_o can_v kill_v a_o believer_n though_o it_o may_v slight_o more_o considerable_a how_o we_o shall_v appear_v then_o than_o how_o we_o appear_v in_o this_o world_n but_o the_o enquiry_n here_o be_v why_o god_n judge_v all_o the_o world_n at_o once_o and_o summon_v all_o mankind_n together_o to_o receive_v their_o final_a sentence_n now_o that_o god_n will_v do_v so_o be_v very_o plain_a why_o he_o do_v it_o he_o have_v not_o tell_v we_o but_o whoever_o
