be_v bind_v to_o all_o the_o day_n of_o our_o life_n and_o second_o to_o take_v we_o off_o from_o our_o worldly_a business_n and_o to_o give_v we_o time_n to_o attend_v the_o service_n of_o god_n and_o the_o need_n of_o our_o soul_n 18._o and_o sure_o if_o we_o right_o consider_v it_o it_o be_v a_o very_a great_a benefit_n to_o we_o that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o set_a time_n thus_o weekly_o return_v for_o that_o purpose_n we_o be_v very_a intent_n and_o busy_a upon_o the_o world_n and_o if_o there_o be_v not_o some_o such_o time_n appoint_v to_o our_o hand_n it_o be_v to_o be_v doubt_v we_o shall_v hardly_o allot_v any_o ourselves_o and_o than_o what_o a_o starve_a condition_n must_v these_o poor_a soul_n of_o we_o be_v in_o that_o shall_v never_o be_v afford_v a_o meal_n
then_o it_o be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v value_v that_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v endure_v above_o ground_n but_o lay_v to_o rot_v in_o the_o earth_n yet_o to_o this_o vile_a part_n of_o we_o we_o perform_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o care_n all_o the_o labour_n and_o toil_n we_o be_v at_o be_v to_o maintain_v that_o but_o the_o more_o precious_a part_n the_o soul_n be_v little_a thought_n of_o no_o care_n take_v how_o it_o fare_v but_o as_o if_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n that_o nothing_o concern_v we_o be_v leave_v quite_o neglect_v never_o consider_v by_o we_o 3._o this_o carelessness_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v the_o root_n of_o all_o the_o sin_n we_o commit_v and_o therefore_o whosoever_o intend_v to_o set_v upon_o a_o christian_a course_n must_v in_o the_o first_o place_n amend_v that_o to_o the_o do_v whereof_o there_o need_v no_o deep_a learning_n or_o extraordinary_a part_n the_o simple_a man_n live_v that_o be_v not_o a_o natural_a fool_n have_v understanding_n enough_o for_o it_o if_o he_o will_v but_o act_v in_o this_o by_o the_o same_o rule_n of_o common_a reason_n whereby_o he_o proceed_v in_o his_o worldly_a business_n i_o will_v therefore_o now_o brief_o set_v down_o damage_n and_o mischief_n the_o three_o the_o great_a danger_n of_o it_o &_o the_o four_o the_o likelihood_n that_o our_o care_n will_v not_o be_v in_o vain_a but_o that_o it_o will_v preserve_v the_o thing_n care_v for_o 5._o for_o the_o first_o sâ—ul_a we_o know_v our_o care_n of_o any_o worldly_a thing_n be_v answerable_a to_o the_o worth_n of_o it_o what_o be_v of_o great_a price_n we_o be_v most_o watchful_a to_o preserve_v and_o most_o fearful_a to_o lose_v no_o man_n lock_v up_o dung_n in_o his_o chest_n but_o his_o money_n or_o what_o he_o count_v precious_a he_o do_v now_o in_o this_o respect_n the_o soul_n deserve_v more_o care_n than_o all_o the_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n beside_o for_o it_o be_v infinite_o more_o worth_a first_o in_o that_o be_v make_v after_o the_o image_n of_o god_n it_o be_v god_n that_o breathe_v into_o man_n this_o breath_n of_o life_n gen_n 27._o now_o god_n be_v of_o the_o great_a excellency_n and_o worth_a the_o more_o any_o thing_n be_v like_o he_o the_o more_o it_o be_v to_o be_v value_v but_o it_o be_v sure_a that_o no_o creature_n upon_o the_o earth_n be_v at_o all_o like_a god_n but_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n and_o therefore_o nothing_o ought_v to_o have_v so_o much_o of_o our_o care_n second_o the_o soul_n never_o die_v we_o use_v to_o prize_v thing_n according_a to_o their_o durableness_n what_o be_v most_o last_a be_v most_o worth_a now_o the_o soul_n be_v a_o thing_n that_o will_v last_v for_o ever_o when_o wealth_n beauty_n strength_n nay_o our_o very_a body_n themselves_o fade_v away_o the_o soul_n still_o continue_v therefore_o in_o that_o respect_n also_o the_o soul_n be_v of_o the_o great_a worth_n and_o than_o what_o strange_a madness_n be_v it_o for_o we_o to_o neglect_v they_o as_o we_o do_v we_o can_v spend_v day_n and_o week_n and_o month_n and_o year_n nay_o our_o whole_a life_n in_o hunt_v after_o a_o little_a wealth_n of_o this_o world_n which_o be_v of_o no_o durance_n or_o continuance_n â—nd_v in_o the_o mean_a time_n â—et_v this_o great_a durable_a treasure_n our_o soul_n be_v stoâ—â—_n from_o we_o by_o the_o devil_n 6._o a_o second_o motive_n to_o our_o care_n of_o any_o thing_n that_o they_o shall_v cease_v to_o be_v but_o we_o may_v so_o lose_v they_o in_o another_o that_o we_o shall_v wish_v to_o lose_v they_o even_o in_o that_o that_o be_v we_o may_v lose_v that_o happy_a estate_n to_o which_o they_o be_v create_v and_o plunge_v they_o into_o the_o extreme_a misery_n in_o a_o word_n we_o may_v lose_v they_o in_o hell_n whence_o there_o be_v no_o fetch_v they_o back_o and_o so_o they_o be_v lose_v for_o ever_o nay_o in_o this_o consideration_n our_o very_a body_n be_v concern_v those_o darling_n of_o we_o for_o which_o all_o our_o care_n be_v lay_v out_o for_o they_o must_v certain_o after_o death_n be_v raise_v again_o and_o be_v join_v again_o to_o the_o soul_n and_o take_v part_n with_o it_o in_o whatever_o state_n if_o then_o our_o care_n for_o the_o body_n take_v up_o all_o our_o time_n and_o thought_n and_o leave_v we_o none_o to_o bestow_v on_o the_o poor_a soul_n it_o be_v sure_a the_o soul_n will_v for_o want_n of_o that_o care_n be_v make_v for_o ever_o miserable_a but_o it_o be_v as_o sure_a that_o that_o very_a body_n must_v be_v so_o too_o and_o therefore_o if_o you_o have_v any_o true_a kindness_n to_o your_o body_n show_v it_o by_o take_v care_n of_o your_o soul_n think_v with_o yourselves_o how_o you_o will_v be_v able_a to_o endure_v everlasting_a burn_n if_o a_o small_a spark_n of_o fire_n light_v on_o the_o least_o part_n of_o the_o body_n be_v so_o intolerable_a what_o will_v it_o be_v to_o have_v the_o whole_a cast_n into_o the_o hot_a flame_n and_o that_o not_o for_o some_o few_o hour_n or_o day_n but_o for_o ever_o so_o that_o when_o you_o have_v spend_v many_o thousand_o of_o year_n in_o that_o unspeakable_a torment_n you_o shall_v be_v no_o near_o come_v out_o of_o it_o than_o you_o be_v the_o first_o day_n be_v false_a not_o only_o to_o his_o soul_n but_o to_o his_o vow_n also_o become_v a_o forswear_a creature_n a_o consideration_n well_o worthy_a our_o lay_n to_o heart_n but_o that_o we_o may_v the_o better_o understand_v what_o danger_n the_o soul_n be_v in_o let_v we_o a_o little_a consider_v the_o quality_n of_o these_o enemy_n 8._o in_o a_o war_n you_o know_v there_o be_v divers_a thing_n that_o make_v a_o enemy_n terrible_a the_o first_o be_v subtlety_n and_o cunning_a by_o which_o alone_o many_o victory_n have_v be_v win_v and_o in_o this_o respect_n the_o devil_n be_v a_o all_o intend_a for_o this_o purpose_n to_o bring_v we_o into_o a_o intimacy_n and_o familiarity_n with_o god_n by_o speak_v to_o he_o and_o hear_v he_o speak_v to_o we_o 38._o now_o if_o we_o do_v indeed_o love_v god_n we_o shall_v certain_o huge_o value_v and_o desire_v these_o way_n of_o converse_v with_o he_o it_o be_v all_o that_o we_o can_v have_v in_o this_o life_n it_o will_v make_v we_o exercise_n with_o the_o same_o cheerfulness_n we_o will_v go_v to_o our_o dear_a friend_n and_o if_o indeed_o we_o do_v thus_o it_o be_v a_o good_a proof_n of_o our_o love_n 39_o but_o i_o fear_v there_o be_v not_o many_o have_v this_o to_o show_v for_o it_o as_o appear_v by_o the_o common_a backwardness_n and_o unwillingness_n of_o man_n to_o come_v to_o these_o and_o their_o negligence_n and_o heartlesness_n when_o they_o be_v at_o they_o and_o can_v we_o think_v that_o god_n will_v ever_o own_v we_o for_o lover_n of_o he_o whilst_o we_o have_v such_o dislike_n to_o his_o company_n that_o we_o will_v never_o come_v into_o it_o but_o when_o we_o be_v drag_v by_o fear_n or_o shame_n of_o man_n or_o some_o such_o worldly_a motive_n it_o be_v sure_a you_o will_v not_o think_v that_o man_n love_v you_o who_o you_o perceive_v to_o shun_v your_o company_n and_o to_o be_v loath_a to_o come_v in_o your_o sight_n and_o therefore_o be_v not_o so_o unreasonable_a as_o to_o say_v you_o love_v god_n when_o yet_o you_o desire_v to_o keep_v as_o far_o from_o he_o as_o you_o can_v 40._o but_o beside_o this_o there_o be_v another_o enjoyment_n of_o god_n which_o be_v more_o perfect_a and_o complete_a and_o that_o be_v our_o perpetual_a enjoy_v of_o he_o in_o heaven_n where_o we_o shall_v be_v for_o ever_o unite_v to_o he_o and_o enjoy_v he_o not_o now_o and_o then_o only_o for_o service_n of_o our_o whole_a life_n too_o dear_a a_o price_n for_o this_o full_a enjoyment_n of_o he_o nor_o esteem_v all_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o the_o world_n worth_a the_o look_v on_o in_o comparison_n thereof_o 41._o if_o we_o can_v true_o tell_v ourselves_o we_o do_v thus_o long_o for_o this_o enjoyment_n of_o god_n we_o may_v believe_v we_o love_v he_o but_o i_o fear_v again_o there_o be_v but_o few_o that_o can_v thus_o approve_v their_o love_n for_o if_o we_o look_v into_o man_n life_n we_o shall_v see_v they_o be_v not_o general_o so_o fond_a of_o this_o enjoyment_n as_o to_o be_v at_o any_o pain_n to_o purchase_v it_o and_o not_o only_o so_o but_o it_o be_v to_o be_v doubt_v there_o be_v many_o who_o if_o it_o be_v put_v to_o their_o choice_n whether_o they_o will_v live_v here_o always_o to_o enjoy_v the_o profit_n and_o pleasure_n of_o the_o world_n or_o go_v to_o heaven_n to_o enjoy_v god_n will_v like_o the_o child_n of_o gâ—d_n and_o reuben_n set_v up_o their_o rest_n on_o this_o side_n jordan_n num._n 32._o and_o never_o desire_v that_o heavenly_a canaan_n so_o close_o do_v their_o affection_n cleave_v to_o thing_n below_o which_o show_v clear_o we_o shall_v often_o be_v put_v in_o mind_n of_o it_o to_o prevent_v our_o forget_n and_o also_o often_o exhort_v and_o assist_v to_o withstand_v those_o lust_n which_o draw_v we_o to_o those_o transgression_n and_o to_o these_o purpose_n preach_v be_v intend_v first_o to_o warn_v we_o to_o be_v upon_o our_o guard_n against_o our_o spiritual_a enemy_n and_o then_o to_o furnish_v we_o with_o weapon_n for_o the_o fight_n that_o be_v such_o mean_n and_o help_n as_o may_v best_o enable_v we_o to_o beat_v off_o temptation_n and_o get_v the_o victory_n over_o they_o 30._o since_o therefore_o this_o be_v the_o end_n of_o preach_v we_o must_v not_o think_v we_o have_v do_v our_o duty_n when_o we_o have_v hear_v a_o sermon_n though_o never_o so_o attentive_o but_o we_o must_v lay_v up_o in_o he_o see_v so_o 9_o there_o be_v a_o seven_o end_n drink_n which_o though_o every_o man_n think_v too_o base_a to_o own_o yet_o it_o be_v too_o plain_a it_o prevail_v with_o many_o and_o that_o be_v the_o bare_a pleasure_n of_o the_o drink_n but_o to_o these_o i_o confess_v it_o will_v not_o be_v fit_a to_o say_v much_o for_o he_o that_o be_v come_v to_o this_o lamentable_a degree_n of_o sottishness_n be_v not_o like_a to_o receive_v benefit_n by_o any_o thing_n can_v be_v say_v yet_o let_v i_o tell_v even_o this_o man_n that_o he_o of_o all_o other_o have_v the_o most_o mean_n of_o than_o he_o can_v keep_v i_o shall_v say_v no_o more_o to_o this_o sort_n of_o person_n but_o let_v i_o warn_v all_o those_o that_o go_v on_o in_o the_o sin_n on_o any_o of_o the_o former_a ground_n that_o a_o little_a time_n will_v bring_v they_o even_o to_o this_o which_o they_o profess_v to_o loathe_v it_o be_v daily_o see_v that_o those_o which_o first_o be_v draw_v into_o the_o sin_n for_o the_o love_n of_o the_o company_n at_o last_o continue_v in_o it_o for_o love_n of_o the_o drink_n 10_o i_o can_v think_v but_o of_o one_o end_n more_o bargain_v that_o be_v that_o of_o bargain_v man_n say_v it_o be_v necessary_a for_o they_o to_o drink_v in_o this_o one_o respect_n of_o trade_v with_o their_o neighbour_n bargain_n be_v most_o convenient_o to_o be_v strike_v up_o at_o such_o meeting_n but_o this_o be_v yet_o a_o worse_a end_n than_o all_o the_o rest_n for_o the_o bottom_n of_o it_o be_v a_o aim_n of_o cheat_v &_o defraud_v other_o we_o think_v when_o man_n be_v in_o drink_n we_o shall_v the_o better_o be_v able_a to_o overreach_v they_o and_o so_o this_o add_v the_o sin_n of_o cozenage_n and_o defraud_v to_o that_o of_o drunkenness_n now_o that_o this_o be_v indeed_o the_o intent_n be_v manifest_a for_o if_o it_o be_v only_o the_o dispatch_n of_o bargain_n be_v aim_v at_o we_o shall_v choose_v to_o take_v man_n with_o their_o wâ—â—s_n about_o they_o therefore_o the_o take_v they_o when_o drink_n have_v distemper_v they_o can_v be_v for_o nothing_o but_o to_o make_v advantage_n of_o they_o yet_o this_o often_o prove_v a_o great_a folly_n as_o well_o as_o a_o sin_n for_o he_o that_o drink_v with_o another_o in_o hope_n to_o overreach_v he_o do_v many_o time_n prove_v the_o weak_a brain_v &_o become_v drink_v first_o &_o then_o he_o give_v the_o other_o that_o opportunity_n of_o cheat_v he_o which_o he_o design_v for_o the_o cheat_v of_o the_o other_o now_o this_o end_n of_o drink_v be_v so_o far_o from_o become_v a_o excuse_n that_o it_o be_v a_o huge_a heighten_v of_o the_o sin_n for_o if_o we_o may_v not_o drink_v intemperate_o upon_o any_o occasion_n much_o less_o upon_o so_o wicked_a a_o one_o as_o be_v the_o cozen_n and_o defraud_v of_o our_o brethren_n 11._o i_o suppose_v i_o have_v now_o show_v you_o the_o unreasonableness_n of_o those_o motive_n sin_n which_o aâ—e_v ordinary_o bring_v in_o excuse_n of_o this_o sin_n i_o be_o yet_o further_o to_o tell_v you_o that_o it_o be_v not_o only_o that_o huge_a degree_n of_o drunkenness_n which_o make_v man_n able_a neither_o to_o go_v nor_o speak_v which_o be_v to_o be_v make_v any_o change_n in_o the_o man_n be_v to_o be_v reckon_v into_o this_o sin_n of_o drunkenness_n nay_o further_o the_o drink_n beyond_o the_o natural_a end_n of_o drink_v that_o be_v beyond_o moderate_a refreshment_n be_v a_o sin_n though_o by_o the_o strength_n of_o a_o man_n brain_n it_o make_v not_o least_o change_n in_o he_o and_o therefore_o those_o that_o be_v not_o actual_o drink_v yet_o can_v spend_v whole_a day_n or_o any_o considerable_a part_n of_o they_o in_o drink_v be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v innocent_a that_o that_o great_a woe_n belong_v to_o they_o which_o be_v pronounce_v isa._n 5._o 22._o against_o those_o that_o be_v mighty_a to_o drink_v for_o though_o such_o a_o man_n may_v make_v a_o shift_n to_o preserve_v his_o wit_n yet_o that_o wit_n serve_v he_o to_o very_o little_a purpose_n when_o his_o employment_n be_v still_o but_o the_o same_o with_o he_o that_o be_v the_o most_o sottish_o drink_v that_o be_v to_o pour_v down_o drink_v 12._o nay_o drinker_n this_o man_n be_v guilty_a of_o the_o great_a waste_n first_o of_o the_o good_a creature_n of_o god_n that_o drink_n which_o be_v by_o god_n providence_n intend_v for_o the_o refresh_n and_o relieve_v of_o we_o be_v abuse_v and_o misspend_v when_o it_o be_v drink_v beyond_o that_o measure_n which_o those_o end_n require_v and_o sure_a there_o be_v not_o the_o mean_a of_o these_o creature_n we_o enjoy_v but_o the_o abuse_n of_o they_o shall_v one_o day_n be_v account_v for_o and_o he_o that_o drink_v long_a have_v the_o most_o of_o that_o gnilt_n but_o in_o the_o second_o place_n this_o be_v a_o waste_n of_o that_o which_o be_v much_o more_o precious_a our_o time_n which_o be_v allow_v we_o by_o god_n to_o work_v out_o our_o salvation_n in_o and_o must_v be_v strict_o reckon_v for_o and_o therefore_o ought_v every_o minute_n of_o it_o to_o be_v most_o thrifty_o husband_v to_o that_o end_n in_o action_n of_o good_a life_n but_o when_o it_o be_v thus_o lay_v out_o it_o tend_v to_o the_o direct_a contrary_n even_o the_o work_n out_o our_o damnation_n beside_o he_o that_o thus_o drink_v though_o he_o escape_v be_v drink_v himself_o he_o be_v yet_o guilty_a of_o all_o the_o drunkenness_n that_o any_o of_o his_o company_n fall_v under_o for_o he_o give_v they_o encouragemennt_v to_o
