the_o almighty_a creator_n do_v shut_v it_o up_o in_o narrow_a limit_n command_v the_o water_n which_o cover_v the_o whole_a earth_n to_o gather_v themselves_o together_o into_o one_o place_n of_o the_o earth_n for_o this_o purpose_n that_o the_o dry_a land_n may_v appear_v for_o the_o use_n of_o man_n and_o beast_n etc._n etc._n which_o he_o have_v appoint_v to_o live_v upon_o the_o earth_n genes_n 1.9_o yet_o so_o that_o he_o give_v it_o leave_v now_o to_o overlook_v the_o earth_n as_o it_o be_v in_o lieu_n of_o that_o right_n which_o it_o have_v to_o stand_v above_o by_o its_o it_o be_v very_o good_a which_o you_o must_v understand_v be_v mean_v 1._o of_o a_o natural_a goodness_n or_o perfection_n in_o every_o creature_n whereby_o every_o one_o be_v make_v perfect_a and_o complete_a in_o its_o kind_n without_o all_o natural_a defect_n 2._o of_o a_o special_a goodness_n or_o holiness_n in_o the_o reasonable_a creature_n angel_n and_o men._n thus_o of_o the_o creation_n again_o barren_a tree_n be_v cut_v down_o by_o the_o provident_a husbandman_n that_o they_o may_v not_o cumber_v the_o ground_n as_o you_o see_v in_o the_o gospel_n which_o shall_v move_v we_o by_o bear_v fruit_n unto_o god_n to_o work_v out_o our_o own_o salvation_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a the_o leaf_n of_o a_o outward_a profession_n be_v not_o sufficient_a but_o to_o they_o must_v be_v join_v the_o fruit_n of_o a_o sanctify_a conversation_n the_o tree_n and_o every_o branch_n and_o twig_n thereof_o receive_v sap_n life_n nourishment_n from_o the_o root_n every_o true_a believer_n receive_v heavenly_a life_n and_o grace_n from_o christ_n jesus_n so_o long_o as_o the_o branch_n be_v join_v to_o the_o tree_n and_o so_o to_o the_o root_n it_o receive_v benefit_n and_o refreshment_n from_o the_o dew_n and_o rain_n but_o if_o it_o be_v cut_v off_o from_o the_o tree_n the_o sweet_a shower_n can_v preserve_v it_o from_o be_v wither_v he_o that_o be_v true_o unite_v to_o christ_n as_o a_o branch_n to_o the_o root_n by_o the_o spirit_n and_o faith_n he_o receive_v benefit_n growth_n and_o spiritual_a refreshment_n from_o the_o outward_a mean_n of_o grace_n the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n and_o sacrament_n but_o if_o he_o be_v not_o true_o unite_v to_o he_o the_o sweet_a dew_n that_o ever_o fall_v from_o heaven_n can_v keep_v spiritual_a life_n within_o he_o on_o the_o other_o side_n though_o the_o branch_n do_v receive_v life_n and_o nourishment_n from_o the_o root_n yet_o it_o want_v refreshment_n from_o the_o shower_n of_o heaven_n so_o those_o fanatical_a dreamer_n be_v to_o be_v condemn_v who_o pretend_v a_o union_n with_o christ_n and_o partake_v of_o his_o spirit_n and_o therefore_o brag_v they_o have_v no_o need_n of_o the_o word_n preach_v or_o any_o outward_a mean_n again_o let_v the_o renew_n of_o the_o face_n of_o the_o earth_n by_o these_o creature_n every_o spring_n put_v thou_o in_o mind_n of_o the_o wonderful_a efficacy_n of_o god_n his_o word_n which_o from_o the_o beginning_n unto_o this_o present_a time_n have_v make_v the_o earth_n thus_o fruitful_a and_o let_v it_o teach_v thou_o to_o rely_v upon_o his_o truth_n and_o promise_n in_o other_o thing_n as_o well_o as_o this_o chap._n vi_o meditation_n on_o the_o four_o day_n work_n sect_n 1._o from_o the_o third_z i_o come_v to_o the_o four_o day_n which_o we_o usual_o call_v wednesday_n which_o be_v the_o first_o day_n that_o have_v a_o sun_n to_o give_v it_o light_n to_o which_o be_v add_v the_o moon_n to_o rule_v the_o nâ—ghâ—_n and_o the_o star_n to_o attend_v she_o which_o glorious_a work_n of_o a_o most_o glorious_a god_n shall_v raise_v our_o thought_n to_o some_o holy_a meditation_n 1._o now_o consider_v on_o this_o day_n how_o that_o as_o the_o water_n which_o be_v before_o disperse_v all_o abroad_o upon_o and_o about_o the_o earth_n be_v on_o the_o three_o day_n gather_v into_o one_o store-house_n call_v sea_n so_o the_o light_n which_o be_v before_o diffuse_v through_o the_o huge_a space_n of_o the_o creation_n be_v now_o as_o it_o be_v draw_v together_o into_o one_o body_n of_o the_o sun_n as_o a_o full_a and_o common_a treasury_n consider_v here_o that_o the_o lord_n who_o be_v in_o himself_o infinite_o more_o bright_a than_o the_o light_n itself_o need_v no_o light_n in_o respect_n of_o himself_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v for_o we_o that_o he_o make_v the_o light_n and_o we_o shall_v bless_v he_o for_o it_o so_o in_o regard_n of_o himself_o he_o need_v no_o word_n nor_o revelation_n of_o heavenly_a mystery_n be_v infinite_a in_o all_o knowledge_n and_o wisdom_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v for_o we_o that_o he_o give_v his_o word_n to_o be_v a_o light_n and_o cause_v by_o his_o spirit_n the_o bright_a beam_n of_o holy_a truth_n to_o be_v cast_v abroad_o into_o the_o dark_a world_n therefore_o we_o may_v conceive_v how_o shameful_a our_o sin_n and_o unthankfulness_n be_v that_o we_o must_v be_v entreat_v to_o turn_v our_o eye_n towards_o this_o light_n and_o to_o come_v to_o church_n to_o hear_v the_o word_n whereas_o if_o need_n be_v we_o shall_v beg_v a_o place_n in_o the_o house_n of_o god_n upon_o our_o knee_n rather_o than_o go_v without_o this_o light_n 2._o consider_v that_o although_o the_o lord_n be_v please_v to_o give_v light_n to_o the_o world_n yet_o there_o need_v no_o sun_n whereby_o to_o do_v it_o witness_v the_o light_n of_o the_o three_o first_o day_n wherein_o no_o sun_n shine_v so_o when_o it_o please_v the_o lord_n to_o give_v the_o light_n of_o heavenly_a knowledge_n to_o his_o
church_n yet_o he_o need_v no_o book_n no_o write_a word_n to_o do_v it_o by_o witness_v those_o two_o thousand_o year_n and_o more_o from_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o world_n till_o moses_n write_v the_o holy_a text_n by_o inspiration_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o then_o consider_v that_o as_o after_o the_o three_o day_n the_o sun_n be_v make_v to_o give_v light_n to_o the_o world_n which_o before_o be_v enlighten_v without_o a_o sun_n so_o after_o many_o hundred_o year_n the_o lord_n place_v the_o book_n of_o moses_n and_o then_o other_o holy_a write_n as_o a_o sun_n in_o the_o firmament_n of_o his_o church_n to_o give_v light_n unto_o the_o same_o and_o as_o after_o the_o sun_n be_v make_v man_n have_v no_o want_n of_o that_o light_n which_o be_v give_v without_o a_o sun_n in_o the_o former_a three_o day_n so_o you_o may_v consider_v that_o now_o the_o book_n of_o scripture_n be_v write_v and_o the_o light_n of_o god_n truth_n plentiful_o shine_v in_o they_o there_o be_v no_o need_n of_o unwritten_a tradition_n to_o give_v light_n unto_o we_o in_o any_o way_n or_o work_v of_o god_n and_o therefore_o conclude_v that_o the_o dotage_n of_o the_o papist_n in_o plead_v for_o unwritten_a tradition_n now_o we_o have_v the_o write_a word_n be_v as_o gross_a as_o if_o a_o mâ—n_z shall_v complain_v for_o want_v of_o that_o wander_a light_n of_o the_o three_o first_o day_n now_o when_o â—he_n light_n be_v full_o seat_v and_o firm_o fix_v in_o the_o body_n of_o the_o sun_n 3._o consider_v that_o as_o one_o sun_n give_v light_a to_o the_o whole_a world_n so_o one_o word_n to_o the_o whole_a church_n scatter_v throughout_o the_o world_n and_o here_o see_v the_o absurdity_n of_o some_o unsound_a one_o among_o we_o who_o be_v more_o than_o half_a papist_n be_v not_o ashamed_a to_o condemn_v the_o study_n of_o those_o worthy_a write_n of_o many_o foreign_a divine_n upon_o this_o poor_a pretence_n because_o they_o live_v in_o other_o kingdom_n and_o commonwealth_n and_o so_o their_o doctrine_n do_v not_o so_o well_o suit_n with_o our_o state_n and_o kingdom_n as_o if_o the_o same_o sun_n can_v not_o serve_v all_o nation_n with_o light_n but_o that_o we_o must_v have_v one_o in_o england_n and_o they_o another_o in_o france_n etc._n etc._n so_o if_o the_o sun_n of_o holy_a truth_n do_v shine_v in_o the_o write_n of_o these_o holy_a man_n why_o can_v we_o see_v and_o walk_v by_o this_o light_n as_o well_o as_o outlandish_a man_n 4._o consider_v that_o the_o light_n be_v still_o like_o itself_o that_o light_n which_o be_v before_o the_o sun_n be_v of_o the_o same_o nature_n with_o that_o which_o now_o be_v in_o the_o sun_n so_o the_o truth_n and_o word_n of_o god_n be_v still_o the_o same_o not_o contrary_a to_o itself_o the_o light_n of_o holy_a truth_n which_o be_v before_o the_o word_n write_v and_o this_o which_o shine_v in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n be_v the_o same_o and_o therefore_o the_o papist_n be_v yet_o more_o shameless_a when_o under_o pretence_n of_o the_o unwritten_a word_n they_o thrust_v upon_o the_o church_n such_o idle_a forgery_n as_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o word_n write_v as_o if_o light_n can_v be_v contrary_a to_o light_v or_o darkness_n may_v be_v call_v light_n if_o the_o light_n of_o the_o write_a word_n do_v show_v we_o that_o marriage_n be_v honourable_a among_o all_o man_n and_o therefore_o not_o only_o among_o the_o laity_n then_o know_v it_o be_v no_o beam_n of_o this_o heavenly_a light_n which_o make_v man_n think_v they_o see_v much_o sin_n and_o shame_n in_o it_o when_o it_o be_v use_v by_o the_o minister_n of_o the_o word_n but_o that_o it_o be_v even_o a_o dark_a vapour_n of_o the_o bottomless_a pit_n and_o so_o s._n paul_n say_v it_o be_v a_o doctrine_n of_o devil_n if_o the_o word_n write_v by_o its_o light_n do_v show_v the_o worship_n perform_v to_o image_n to_o be_v gross_a and_o shameful_a idolatry_n than_o that_o doctrine_n which_o commend_v this_o as_o a_o special_a point_n of_o devotion_n and_o condemn_v to_o the_o fire_n those_o that_o refuse_v it_o can_v be_v any_o beam_n of_o light_n issue_v from_o the_o word_n of_o god_n unwritten_a but_o rather_o a_o dark_a shadow_n cause_v by_o the_o prince_n of_o darkness_n so_o you_o may_v think_v of_o many_o other_o popish_a foppery_n the_o sea_n the_o tree_n grass_n herb_n etc._n etc._n which_o be_v on_o the_o three_o day_n appear_v to_o be_v of_o the_o same_o colour_n by_o that_o light_n which_o then_o be_v without_o a_o sun_n as_o thâ—â—_n do_v afterward_o by_o the_o sun-light_n so_o those_o thinâ—â—_n which_o by_o the_o word_n write_v be_v now_o 〈◊〉_d to_o be_v white_a or_o black_a lawful_a oâ—â—â—lawfull_a do_v appear_v so_o also_o by_o the_o light_n oâ—â—he_fw-mi word_n before_o it_o be_v write_v 5._o consider_v also_o that_o as_o the_o lord_n can_v have_v give_v light_a without_o a_o sun_n and_o yet_o be_v please_v to_o make_v a_o sun_n do_v also_o require_v that_o we_o shall_v see_v by_o this_o sun_n so_o the_o lord_n who_o can_v have_v give_v we_o knowledge_n without_o a_o word_n preach_v and_o have_v teach_v we_o immediate_o by_o his_o spirit_n be_v please_v to_o set_v up_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n and_o to_o teach_v we_o by_o it_o do_v require_v that_o we_o shall_v learn_v and_o profit_n by_o it_o and_o therefore_o we_o must_v not_o think_v that_o we_o may_v neglect_v the_o word_n because_o god_n can_v teach_v we_o without_o it_o we_o must_v be_v teach_v as_o god_n will_v teach_v we_o and_o not_o as_o he_o can_v but_o will_v not_o god_n speak_v immediate_o to_o saul_n from_o heaven_n condemn_v his_o cruelty_n against_o the_o church_n but_o yet_o send_v he_o to_o a_o man_n to_o learn_v what_o he_o shall_v do_v the_o lord_n strike_v down_o a_o sinner_n with_o the_o apprehension_n of_o his_o wrath_n for_o sin_n but_o send_v he_o to_o man_n even_o to_o the_o preacher_n of_o his_o word_n to_o learn_v what_o he_o ought_v to_o do_v and_o therefore_o they_o who_o in_o regard_n of_o knowledge_n despise_v the_o preach_n of_o the_o word_n and_o think_v it_o needless_a may_v as_o well_o despise_v the_o sun_n in_o regard_n of_o outward_a light_n for_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o body_n and_o think_v it_o may_v well_o be_v spare_v 6._o again_o consider_v that_o as_o the_o sun_n in_o his_o circuit_n pass_v from_o east_n to_o west_n so_o the_o light_n of_o the_o word_n issue_v by_o the_o special_a providence_n of_o god_n from_o the_o east_n have_v come_v towards_o the_o west_n it_o be_v probable_o think_v that_o adam_n be_v create_v in_o the_o eastern_a part_n of_o the_o world_n to_o who_o the_o word_n be_v at_o first_o deliver_v however_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o jerusalem_n be_v eastward_o whence_o the_o law_n do_v issue_n and_o the_o gospel_n proceed_v unto_o these_o western_a part_n and_o now_o towards_o the_o end_n of_o this_o great_a day_n of_o the_o world_n this_o light_n be_v bend_v towards_o those_o poor_a western_a barbarian_n of_o america_n 7._o again_n as_o the_o rise_a sun_n be_v most_o look_v at_o be_v especial_o welcome_a after_o the_o dark_a night_n and_o not_o so_o much_o regard_v at_o noon_n though_o then_o it_o shine_v bright_a so_o the_o word_n preach_v be_v most_o affect_v ordinary_o by_o a_o people_n at_o its_o first_o come_v but_o afterwards_o through_o their_o great_a corruption_n and_o unthankfulness_n it_o seem_v stale_a unto_o they_o although_o there_o be_v a_o increase_n of_o gift_n in_o the_o preacher_n and_o the_o truth_n shine_v bright_a to_o they_o in_o his_o ministry_n than_o at_o the_o first_o if_o you_o find_v this_o in_o yourselves_o let_v your_o heart_n smite_v you_o for_o it_o and_o be_v earnest_a with_o god_n to_o renew_v your_o affection_n to_o his_o word_n that_o you_o may_v gather_v a_o appetiâ—e_n by_o feed_v upon_o this_o heavenly_a manna_n and_o not_o like_o the_o carnal_a israelite_n begin_v to_o loathe_v it_o and_o to_o lust_n for_o grosser_n food_n because_o this_o have_v be_v so_o common_a consider_v that_o as_o any_o man_n well_o in_o his_o wit_n account_v it_o a_o blessing_n to_o have_v the_o sun_n once_o in_o 24._o hour_n so_o shall_v any_o one_o who_o be_v wise_a unto_o salvation_n and_o teach_v of_o god_n account_v it_o a_o blessing_n to_o have_v the_o word_n twice_o in_o a_o week_n although_o it_o be_v the_o less_o regard_v by_o earthly_a spirit_n because_o it_o be_v ordinary_a 8._o moreover_o think_v with_o thyself_o that_o as_o he_o that_o be_v stark_o blind_a can_v see_v the_o light_n when_o the_o sun_n shine_v most_o bright_o so_o he_o that_o be_v in_o natural_a blindness_n can_v right_o see_v the_o divine_a virtue_n and_o save_a excellency_n of_o the_o word_n therefore_o call_v upon_o

it_o again_o as_o the_o sun_n never_o so_o set_v as_o not_o to_o shine_v at_o all_o but_o when_o it_o set_v to_o one_o part_n of_o the_o world_n it_o arise_v to_o another_o so_o christ_n never_o withdraw_v his_o light_n from_o the_o whole_a world_n but_o although_o he_o remove_v from_o one_o nation_n yet_o he_o shine_v upon_o another_o he_o have_v a_o church_n in_o all_o age_n 5._o again_o as_o among_o those_o fruit_n which_o grow_v in_o the_o earth_n such_o as_o grow_v most_o towards_o the_o sun_n be_v sweet_a such_o as_o be_v most_o in_o the_o shade_n be_v sour_a so_o among_o those_o christian_n which_o be_v unite_v unto_o christ_n those_o who_o have_v more_o free_a and_o constant_a communion_n with_o he_o partake_v most_o of_o his_o spirit_n keep_v more_o close_a to_o he_o than_o more_o effectual_o to_o thaw_v and_o melt_v the_o freeze_a ice_n than_o many_o thousand_o man_n with_o axe_n and_o bettle_n so_o the_o presence_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o love_n manifest_v to_o the_o soul_n and_o shed_v into_o it_o be_v more_o effectual_a in_o melt_v a_o hard_a freeze_a heart_n into_o sound_n godly_a sorrow_n than_o a_o thousand_o threat_n or_o terror_n of_o the_o law_n therefore_o let_v not_o a_o afflict_a soul_n put_v back_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n tender_v unto_o it_o the_o offer_v of_o grace_n in_o christ-iâ—sus_a because_o it_o be_v not_o yet_o sufficient_o humble_v but_o so_o long_o as_o its_o conscience_n bear_v witness_v that_o it_o seek_v not_o mercy_n for_o a_o cloak_n of_o sin_n but_o for_o a_o motive_n to_o obedience_n let_v it_o with_o confidence_n apply_v the_o promise_n know_v that_o the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n shine_v upon_o the_o soul_n be_v of_o all_o other_o the_o most_o ready_a and_o the_o most_o excellent_a mean_n kind_o and_o sweet_o to_o melt_v and_o soften_v the_o heart_n and_o to_o conform_v it_o to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n this_o will_v make_v it_o yield_v and_o fit_v it_o to_o receive_v any_o stamp_n of_o grace_n that_o now_o it_o will_v be_v like_o wax_n before_o the_o fire_n that_o will_v be_v mould_v as_o it_o shall_v please_v the_o hand_n of_o god_n therefore_o do_v not_o stand_v back_o from_o christ_n because_o thou_o be_v sensible_a of_o too_o much_o hardeness_n in_o thy_o heart_n but_o rather_o come_v to_o he_o that_o this_o hardeness_n may_v be_v remove_v and_o thy_o heart_n may_v melt_v at_o his_o love_n 7._o let_v the_o glory_n and_o excellency_n of_o the_o sun_n make_v thou_o to_o admire_v the_o infinite_a glory_n and_o excellency_n of_o its_o maker_n if_o the_o sun_n can_v long_o be_v look_v on_o with_o a_o steady-eye_n oh_o then_o how_o do_v god_n dwell_v in_o that_o light_n which_o can_v be_v approach_v unto_o who_o can_v stand_v before_o he_o 〈◊〉_d angel_n may_v well_o hide_v their_o face_n at_o his_o presence_n where_o then_o shall_v man_n appear_v in_o the_o rag_n of_o his_o pollution_n oh_o learn_v to_o contemn_v all_o the_o glory_n of_o the_o earth_n in_o comparison_n of_o his_o infinite_a excellency_n who_o make_v the_o sun_n itself_o of_o nothing_o which_o be_v more_o worth_a than_o the_o whole_a earth_n and_o all_o its_o
