VI. 1 The wickedness of the world which provoked Gods wrath and caused the floud 8 Noah findeth grace 14 The order form and end of the Ark. 9 Unto you therefore O kings do I speak that ye may learn wisdom and not fall away 10 For they that keep holiness holily shall be ‖ Or justified judged holy and they that have learned such things shall finde ‖ Or a defence what to answer 11 Wherefore set your affection upon my words desire them and ye shall be instructed 12 Wisdom is glorious and never fadeth away yea she is easily seen of them that love her and found of such as seek her 13 She preventeth them that desire her in making her self first known unto them 14 Whoso seeketh her early shall have no great travel for he shall finde her sitting at his doors 15 To think therefore upon her is perfection of wisdom and whoso watcheth for her shall quickly be without care 16 For she goeth about seeking such as are worthy of her sheweth her self favourably unto them in the ways and meeteth them in every thought 17 For the very true beginning of her is the desire of ‖ Or nurture discipline and the care of discipline is love 18 And love is the keeping of her laws and the giving heed unto her laws is the assurance of incorruption 19 And incorruption maketh us near unto God 20 Therefore the desire of wisdom bringeth to a kingdom 21 If your delight be then in thrones and sceptres O ye kings of the people honour wisdom that ye may reign for evermore 22 As for wisdom what she is and how she came up I will tell you and will not hide mysteries from you but will seek her out from the beginning of her nativity and bring the knowledge of her into light and will not pass over the truth 23 Neither will I go with-consuming envy for such a man shall have no fellowship with wisdom 24 But the multitude of the wise is â—â—e welfare of the world and a wise king is the upholding of the peoâ—â—e 25 Receive therefore instruction through my words and it shall do you good CHAP. All good things together came to me with her and innumerable riches in her hands 12 And I rejoyced in them all because wisdom goeth before them and I knew not that she was the mother of them 13 I learned †Gr. without guile diligently and do communicate her †Gr. without envy liberally I do not hide her riches 14 For she is a treasure unto men that never faileth which they that use ‖ Or enter friendship with God become the friends of God being commended for the gifts that come from learning 15 ‖ Or God grant God hath granted me to speak as I would and to conceive as is meet for the things that ‖ Or are to be spoken of are given me because it is he that leadeth unto wisdom and directeth the wise 16 For in his hand are both we and our words all wisdom also and knowledge of workmanship 17 For he hath given me certain knowledge of the things that are namely to know how the world was made and the operation of the elements 18 The beginning ending and midst of the times the alterations of the turning of the sun and the change of seasons 19 The circuits of years and the positions of stars 20 The natures of living creatures and the furies of wilde beasts the violence of winds and the reasonings of men the diversities of plants and the vertues of roots 21 And all such things as are either secret or manifest them I know 22 For wisdom which is the worker of all things taught me for in her is an understanding spirit holy †Gr. onely begotten one onely manifold subtil lively clear undefiled plain not subject to hurt loving the thing that is good quick which cannot be letted ready to do good 23 Kinde to man stedfast sure free from care having all power overseeing all things and going through all understanding pure and most subtil spirits 24 For wisdom is more moving then any motion she passeth and goeth through all things by reason of her pureness 25 For she is the ‖ Or vapour breath of the power of God and a pure ‖ Or strum influence flowing from the glory of the Almighty therefore can no defiled thing fall into her 26 For she is the * Heb. 1.3 brightness of the everlasting light the unspotted mirrour of the power of God and the image of his goodness 27 And being but one she can do all things and remaining in her self she ‖ Or â—â—uteth maketh all things new and in all ages entring into holy souls she maketh them friends of God and prophets 28 For God loveth none but him that dwelleth with wisdom 29 For she is more beautiful then the sun and above all the order of stars being compared with the sight she is found before it 30 For after this cometh night but vice shall not prevail against wisdom CHAP. VIII 2 He is in love with wisdom 4 for he that hath it hath every good thing 21 It cannot be bad but from God WIsdom reacheth from one end to another mightily and ‖ Or profitably sweetly doth she order all things 2 I loved her and sought her out from my youth I desired ‖ Or to marry her to my self to make her my spouse and I was a lover of her beauty 3 In that she is conversant with God she magnifieth her nobility yea the Lord of all things himself
CHAP. XV. 4 Antiochus desireth leave to pass through Judea and granteth great honours to Simon and the Jews 16 The Romanes write to divers kings and nations to favour the Jews 27 Antiochus quarrelleth with Simon 38 and sendeth some to annoy Judea MOreover Antiochus son of Demetrius the king sent setters from the isles of the sea unto Simon the priest and prince of the Jews and to all the people 2 The contents whereof were these King Antiochus to Simon the high priest prince of his nation and to the people of the Jews greeting 3 Forasmuch as certain pestilent men have usurped the kingdom of our fathers and my purpose is to challenge it again that I may restore it to the old estate and to that end have gathered a multitude of forein souldiers together and prepared ships of war 4 My meaning also being to go through the countrey that I may be avenged of them that have destroyed it and made many cities in the kingdom desolate 5 Now therefore I confirm unto thee all the oblations with the kings before me granted thee and whatsoever gifts besides they granted 6 I give thee leave also to coyn money for thy countrey with thine own stamp 7 And as concerning Jerusalem and the sanctuary let them be free and all the armour that thou hast made and fortresses that thou hast built and keepest in thine hands let them remain unto thee 8 And if anything be or shall be owing to the king let it be forgiven thee from this time forth for evermore 9 Furthermore when we have obtained our kingdom we will honour thee and thy nation and thy temple with great honour so that your honour shall be known throughout the world 10 In the hundred threescore and fourteenth year went Antiochus into the land of his fathers at which time all the forces came together unto him so that few were left with Tryphon 11 Wherefore being pursued by king Antiochus he fled unto Dora which lieth by the sea-side 12 For he saw that troubles came upon him all at once and that his forces had forsaken him 13 Then camped Antiochus against Dora having with him an hundred and twenty thousand men of war eight thousand hors-men 14 And when he had compassed the city round about and joyned ships close to the town on the sea side he vexed the city by land and by sea neither suffered he any to go out or in 15 In the mean season came Numenius and his company from Rome having letters to the kings and countreys wherein were written these things 16 Lucius Consul of the Romanes unto king Ptolemee greeting 17 The Jews ambassadours our friends and confederates came unto us to renew the old friendship and league being sent from Simon the high priest and from the people of the Jews 18 And they brought a shield of gold of a thousand pound 19 We thought it good therefore to write unto the kings and countreys that they should do them no harm nor fight against them their cities or countries nor yet aid their enemies against them 20 It seemed also good to us to receive the shield of them 21 If therefore there be any pestilent fellows that have fled from their countrey unto you deliver them unto Simon the high priest that he may punish them according to their own law 22 The same things wrote he likewise unto Demetrius the king and Attalus to ‖ Or Arathes Ariarathes and Arsaces 23 And to all the countreys and to ‖ Or Sampsames Sampsames and the Lacedemonians and to Delus and Myndus and Sicyon and Caria and Samos and Pamphylia and Lycia and Halicarnassus and Rhodus and ‖ Or Basilis Phaselis and Cos and Side and Aradus and Gortyna and Cnidus and Cyprus and Cyrene 24 And the copy hereof they wrote to Simon the high priest 25 So Antiochus the king camped against Dora the second day †Or. bringing his forâ—â—s to it assaulting it continually and making engines by which means he shut up Tryphon that he could neither go out nor in 26 At that time Simon sent him two thousand chosen men to aid him silver also and gold and much armour 27 Nevertheless he would not receive them but brake all the covenants which he had made with him afore became strange unto him 28 Furthermore he sent unto him Athenobius one of his friends to commune with him and say You withhold Joppe and Gazara with the towre that is in Jerusalem which are cities of my realm 29 The borders thereof ye have wasted and done great hurt in the land and got the dominion of many places within my kingdom 30 Now therefore deliver the cities which ye have taken and the tributes of the places whereof ye have gotten dominion ‖ Or. except the borders c. without the borders of Judea 31 Or else give me for them five hundred talents of silver and for the harm that you have done and the tributes of the cities other five hundred talents if not we will come and ‖ Or subdue you in fight fight against you 32 So Athenobius the kings friend came to Jerusalem and when he saw the glory of Simon and the cupboard of gold silver plate his great attendance he was astonished and told him the kings message 33 Then answered Simon and said unto him We have neither taken other mens land nor holden that which appertaineth to others but the inheritance of our fathers which our enemies had wrongfully in possession a certain time 34 Wherefore we having opportunity hold the inheritance of our fathers 35 And whereas thou demandest Joppe and Gazara albeit they did great harm unto the people in our countrey yet will we give an hundred talents for them Hereunto Athenobius answered him not a word 36 But returned in a rage to the king and made report unto him of these speeches and of the glory of Simon and of all that he had seen whereupon the king was exceeding wroth 37 In the mean time fled Tryphon by ship unto Orthosias 38 Then the king made Cendebeus captain of the sea-coast and gave him an host of footmen and hors-men 39 And commanded him to remove his host toward Judea also he commanded him to build up Cedron to fortifie the gates to war against the people but as for the king himself he pursued Tryphon 40 So Cendebeus came to Jamnia began to provoke the people to invade Judea and to take the people prisoners and slay them 41 And when he had built up Cedron he set hors-men there and an host of footmen to the end that issuing out they might make outrodes upon the ways of Judea as the king had commanded him CHAP. XVI 3 Judas and John prevail against the forces sent by Antiochus 11 The captain of Jericho inviteth Simon and two of his sons into his castle and there treacherously murdereth them 19 John is sought for 22 and escapeth and

V. He that loveth God loveth his children and keepeth his commandments 3 which to the faithful are light and not grievous 9 Jesus is the Son of God able to save us 14 and to bear our prayers which we make for our selves and for others WHosoever beleeveth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him 2 By this we know that we love the children of God when we love God and keep his commandments 3 For this is the love of God that we keep his commandments and * Mat. 11.30 his commandments are not grievous 4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world and this is the victory that overcometh the world even our faith 5 Who is he that overcometh the world but he that beleeveth that Jesus is the Son of God 6 This is he that came by water and bloud even Jesus Christ not by water onely but by water and bloud and it is the Spirit that beareth witness because the Spirit is truth 7 For there are three that bear record in heaven the Father the Word and the holy Ghost and these three are one 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth the spirit and the water and the bloud and these three agree in one 9 If we receive the witness of men the witness of God is greater for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son 10 He that beleeveth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself he that beleeveth
not God hath made him a liar because he beleeved not the record that God gave of his Son 11 And this is the record that God hath given to us eternal life and this life is in his Son 12 He that hath the Son hath life and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life 13 These things have I written unto you that beleeve on the name of the Son of God that ye may know that ye have eternal life and that ye may beleeve on the name of the Son of God 14 And this is the confidence that we have ‖ Or concerning him in him that * Ch. 3.22 if we ask any thing according to his will he heareth us 15 And if we know that he hear us whatsoever we ask we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him 16 If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death he shall ask and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death * Mat. 12.31 Mar. 3.23 There is a sin unto death I do not say that he shall pray for it 17 All unrighteousness is sin and there is a sin not unto death 18 We know that whosoever is born of God sinneth not but he that is begotten of God keepeth himself and that wicked one toucheth him not 19 And we know that we are of God and the whole world lieth in wickedness 20 And we know that the Son of God is come and hath given us an understanding that we may know him that is true and we are in him that is true even in his Son Jesus Christ This is the true God and eternal life 21 Little children keep your selves from idols Amen ¶ The second epistle of S. JOHN He exhorteth a certain honourable matron with her children to persevere in Christian love and belief 8 lest they lose the reward of their former profession 10 and to have nothing to do with those seducers that bring not the true doctrine of Christ Jesus THe elder unto the elect lady and her children whom I love in the truth and not I onely but also all they that have known the truth 2 For the truths sake which dwelleth in us and shall be with us for ever 3 Grace be with you mercy and peace from God the Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ the Son of the Father in truth and love 4 I rejoyced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth as we have received a commandment from the Father 5 And now I beseech thee lady * 1 Joh. 1.7 not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee but that which we had from the beginning that we love one another 6 And this is love that we walk after his commandments This is the commandment that as ye have heard from the beginning ye should walk in it 7 For many deceivers are entred into the world who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh This is a deceiver and an antichrist 8 Look to your selves that we lose not those things which we have ‖ Or gained Some copies read which ye have gained but that ye receive c. wrought but that we receive a full reward 9 Whosoever transgresseth and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ hath not God he that abideth in the doctrine of Christ he hath both the Father and the Son 10 If there come any unto you and bring not this doctrine receive him not into your house neither bid him God speed 11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds 12 Having many things to write unto you I would not write with paper and ink but I trust to come unto you and speak †Gr. mouth to mouth face to face that our joy may be full 13 The children of thy elect sister greet thee Amen ¶ The third epistle of S. II. 1 Christ turneth water into wine 12 departeth into Capernaum and to Jerusalem 14 where he purgeth the temple of buyers and sellers 19 He foretelleth his death and resurrection 23 Many beleeved because of his miracles but he would not trust himself with them ANd the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee and the mother of Jesus was there 2 And both Jesus was called and his disciples to the marriage 3 And when they wanted wine the mother of Jesus saith unto him They have no wine 4 Jesus saith unto her Woman what have I to do with thee mine hour is not yet come 5 His mother saith unto the servants Whatsoever he saith unto you do it 6 And there were set there six water-pots of stone after the manner of the purifying of the Jews containing two or three firkins apiece 7 Jesus saith unto them Fill the water-pots with water And they filled them up to the brim 8 And he saith unto them Draw out now and bear unto the governour of the feast And they bare it 9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine and knew not whence it was but the servants which drew the water knew the governour of the feast called the bridegroom 10 And saith unto him Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine and when men have well drunk then that which is worse but thou hast kept the good wine until now 11 This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee and manifested forth his glory and his disciples beleeved on him 12 ¶ After this he went down to Capernaum he and his mother and his brethren his disciples and they continued there not many days 13 ¶ And the Jews pass-over was at hand Jesus went up to Jerusalem 14 And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves and the changers of money sitting 15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords he drove them all out of the temple and the sheep and the oxen and poured out the changers money and overthrew the tables 16 And said unto them that sold doves Take these things hence make not my Fathers house an house of merchandise 17 And his disciples remembred that it was written * Psal 69.9 The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up 18 ¶ Then answered the Jews and said unto him what signe shewest thou unto us seeing that thou doest these things 19 Jesus answered and said unto them * Mat. 26.61 Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up 20 Then said the Jews Fourty and six years was this temple in building and wilt thou rear it up in three days 21 But he spake of the temple of his body 22 When therefore he was risen from the dead his disciples remembred that he had said this unto them and they beleeved the scripture and the word which Jesus had said 23 ¶ Now when he was in Jerusalem at the pass-over in the feast day many beleeved in his name when they saw the miracles which he did 24 But Jesus did not commit himself unto them because he knew all men 25 And needed not that any should testifie of man for he knew what was in man CHAP. III. 1 Christ teacheth Nicodemus the necessity of regeneration 14 of faith in his death 16 The great love of God towards the world 18 Contemnation for unbelief 23 The baptism witness and doctrine of John concerning Christ THere was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus a ruler of the Jews 2 The same came to Jesus by night and said unto him Rabbi we know that thou art a teacher come from God for no man can do these miracles that thou doest except God be with him 3 Jesus answered and said unto him Verily verily I say unto thee Except a man be born ‖ Or from above again he cannot see the kingdom of God 4 Nicodemus saith unto him How can a man be born when he is old can he enter the second time into his mothers womb be born 5 Jesus answered Verily verily I say unto thee Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee Ye must be born ‖ Or from above again 8 The wind bloweth where it listeth and thou hearest the sound thereof but canst not tell whence it cometh and whither it goeth so is every one that is born of the Spirit 9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him How can these things be 10 Jesus answered and said unto him Art thou a master of Israel and knowest not these things 11 Verily verily I say unto thee We speak that we do know and testifie that we have seen and ye receive not our witness 12 If I have told you earthly things and ye believe not how shall ye believe if I tell you of heavenly things 13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven but he that came down from heaven even the Son of man which is in heaven 14 ¶ * Numb 21.9 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness even so must the Son of man be lifted up 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have eternal life 16 ¶ * 1 John 4.9 For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have everlasting life 17
