this_o condition_n yet_o they_o will_v not_o see_v it_o nor_o be_v persuade_v of_o it_o when_o their_o own_o life_n can_v testify_v to_o their_o face_n and_o also_o proclaim_v to_o all_o the_o world_n that_o there_o be_v no_o faith_n in_o their_o heart_n and_o god_n people_n mourn_v for_o they_o and_o cry_v to_o god_n for_o they_o and_o sink_v under_o the_o burden_n of_o their_o misery_n yet_o it_o be_v strange_a to_o see_v how_o people_n will_v bear_v up_o themselves_o with_o a_o blind_a boldness_n and_o a_o wretched_a carnal_a confidence_n and_o conceit_n that_o they_o have_v faith_n it_o be_v true_a say_v they_o our_o life_n be_v not_o so_o holy_a as_o they_o ought_v and_o our_o work_n be_v not_o so_o good_a as_o they_o shall_v be_v therefore_o we_o trust_v not_o to_o our_o work_n but_o to_o jesus_n christ_n he_o come_v to_o save_v sinner_n and_o we_o trust_v in_o he_o and_o all_o the_o worid_a nay_o all_o the_o devil_n in_o hell_n shall_v not_o persuade_v we_o to_o the_o contrary_a cost_v you_o much_o labour_n before_o that_o day_n come_v that_o those_o proud_a heart_n of_o you_o be_v humble_v and_o those_o distemper_a soul_n of_o you_o that_o be_v fasten_v to_o your_o lust_n and_o corruption_n be_v bring_v to_o believe_v and_o to_o be_v effectual_o persuade_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o father_n and_o that_o those_o doubt_v and_o stagger_a soul_n of_o you_o be_v bring_v to_o rest_v upon_o free_a grace_n in_o jesus_n christ_n oh_o how_o few_o find_v this_o work_n i_o can_v scarce_o tell_v whether_o to_o make_v it_o a_o matter_n of_o lamentation_n or_o of_o reproof_n of_o those_o that_o think_v they_o have_v faith_n and_o have_v it_o not_o i_o be_o afraid_a that_o too_o many_o of_o you_o will_v find_v the_o want_n of_o it_o when_o it_o be_v too_o late_o if_o ever_o doctrine_n be_v needful_a to_o be_v press_v then_o now_o especial_o in_o these_o time_n that_o so_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a i_o may_v shake_v the_o carnal_a confidence_n of_o most_o man_n suffer_v i_o therefore_o to_o go_v on_o plain_o in_o this_o use_n of_o reproof_n and_o let_v i_o do_v it_o in_o two_o particular_n first_o i_o will_v show_v and_o prove_v that_o many_o that_o live_v in_o the_o bosom_n of_o the_o church_n have_v not_o faith_n second_o i_o will_v show_v who_o they_o be_v in_o particular_a that_o have_v no_o faith_n which_o thing_n be_v open_v than_o i_o hope_v every_o man_n but_o especial_o such_o as_o god_n shall_v bless_v this_o truth_n unto_o shall_v be_v apprehensive_a of_o their_o condition_n if_o they_o will_v deal_v plain_o with_o their_o own_o heart_n first_o let_v i_o lay_v the_o indictment_n and_o show_v that_o many_o that_o live_v in_o the_o bosom_n of_o the_o church_n want_v this_o save_a faith_n scripture_n and_o reason_n be_v you_o take_v out_o this_o lesson_n take_v it_o not_o out_o by_o half_n for_o than_o you_o wrong_v mercy_n and_o yourselves_o too_o if_o you_o think_v that_o bare_a work_n will_v serve_v and_o that_o be_v all_o no_o no_o mercy_n will_v rule_v you_o therefore_o take_v all_o the_o lesson_n out_o and_o then_o the_o heart_n will_v be_v cheer_v and_o thy_o soul_n in_o some_o measure_n enable_v to_o come_v on_o to_o the_o lord_n and_o will_v see_v some_o glimpse_n of_o consolation_n from_o the_o spirit_n quest_n 2_o we_o see_v the_o lesson_n what_o must_v be_v learn_v now_o we_o must_v see_v the_o reason_n why_o the_o lord_n must_v teach_v this_o lesson_n answ_n i_o answer_v it_o be_v not_o appropriate_v to_o the_o father_n alone_o for_o the_o father_n teach_v not_o alone_a but_o the_o not_o say_v we_o take_v a_o advocate_n with_o a_o advocate_n that_o do_v not_o plead_v with_o himself_o the_o reason_n be_v god_n the_o father_n be_v direct_o offend_v though_o all_o the_o person_n in_o the_o trinity_n be_v offend_v yet_o the_o father_n more_o direct_o now_o he_o that_o be_v direct_o offend_v favour_n and_o mercy_n must_v come_v from_o he_o to_o the_o party_n that_o do_v offend_v and_o that_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o christ_n especial_o cast_v this_o upon_o the_o father_n take_v a_o creditor_n that_o have_v money_n or_o creditor_n that_o be_v bankrupt_n now_o this_o be_v no_o mean_n to_o help_v and_o succour_v these_o man_n but_o it_o lie_v upon_o the_o creditor_n that_o owe_v the_o debt_n for_o he_o only_o it_o be_v must_v come_v to_o forgive_v the_o debt_n for_o it_o be_v here_o god_n the_o father_n be_v direct_o offend_v by_o the_o son_n of_o man_n therefore_o from_o he_o in_o the_o first_o place_n must_v proceed_v the_o pardon_n and_o mercy_n to_o the_o son_n of_o man_n hence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o text_n say_v the_o father_n must_v teach_v this_o lesson_n quest_n 3_o the_o three_o question_n be_v this_o after_o what_o manner_n as_o sinful_a nay_o haply_o worse_o than_o ever_o they_o be_v before_o the_o reason_n be_v they_o have_v get_v their_o desire_n now_o and_o they_o care_v for_o no_o more_o they_o have_v get_v their_o ease_n and_o quiet_a now_o and_o as_o for_o christ_n and_o grace_n and_o holiness_n they_o care_v no_o more_o for_o they_o because_o they_o have_v no_o more_o use_n of_o they_o nay_o to_o go_v further_o observe_v it_o this_o poor_a creature_n may_v in_o his_o own_o sense_n and_o feeling_n apprehend_v and_o think_v that_o he_o do_v renounce_v all_o sin_n true_o and_o that_o he_o put_v the_o high_a esteem_n and_o great_a account_n upon_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n above_o all_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n if_o he_o look_v into_o his_o own_o apprehension_n he_o may_v think_v he_o do_v thus_o and_o yet_o the_o union_n and_o league_n between_o sin_n and_o his_o soul_n be_v never_o break_v all_o this_o may_v be_v in_o sense_n and_o feeling_n and_o a_o honest_a minister_n if_o he_o be_v not_o very_o wise_a in_o charity_n will_v judge_v so_o as_o shall_v appear_v by_o this_o instance_n take_v water_n seethe_v hot_a though_o in_o nature_n it_o be_v the_o cold_a of_o all_o element_n yet_o while_o it_o continue_v on_o the_o fire_n it_o grow_v so_o hot_a that_o a_o man_n shall_v feel_v no_o cold_a at_o all_o in_o it_o but_o yet_o there_o be_v a_o principle_n of_o cold_a remain_v in_o it_o as_o the_o philosopher_n conceive_v for_o pluck_v the_o fire_n from_o the_o water_n or_o the_o water_n from_o the_o fire_n and_o it_o will_v return_v to_o coldness_n again_o and_o freeze_v the_o soon_o because_o when_o it_o be_v take_v from_o the_o fire_n it_o beat_v out_o the_o heat_n with_o the_o more_o violence_n now_o the_o reason_n why_o the_o cold_a be_v there_o and_o yet_o not_o perceive_v be_v because_o the_o fierceness_n of_o the_o heat_n do_v overmaster_v it_o and_o make_v it_o retire_v and_o not_o express_v itself_o in_o outward_a appearance_n so_o it_o be_v with_o this_o terrify_a hypocrite_n in_o these_o pang_n of_o extremity_n and_o horror_n of_o conscience_n when_o the_o soul_n be_v possess_v with_o the_o fierce_a indignation_n of_o the_o almighty_a when_o the_o flash_n of_o everlasting_a vengeance_n seize_v upon_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o sinner_n this_o take_v off_o the_o pleasure_n delight_n and_o content_n which_o the_o heart_n have_v in_o sin_n though_o the_o soul_n love_v it_o and_o the_o heart_n embrace_v it_o and_o the_o spirit_n close_o with_o it_o yet_o he_o can_v find_v and_o feel_v in_o his_o own_o apprehension_n no_o pleasure_n at_o all_o in_o sin_n nor_o no_o sweetness_n in_o his_o lust_n by_o reason_n of_o the_o domineer_a vengeance_n of_o the_o lord_n which_o take_v off_o all_o the_o pleasantness_n that_o be_v in_o it_o before_o and_o therefore_o the_o adulterer_n that_o have_v his_o dalliance_n every_o morning_n if_o god_n let_v the_o flame_n of_o his_o vengeance_n once_o into_o his_o soul_n as_o he_o have_v flame_v in_o lust_n all_o his_o sweetness_n and_o delight_n in_o sin_n will_v vanish_v away_o in_o his_o own_o apprehension_n but_o yet_o his_o soul_n cleave_v to_o his_o base_a lust_n still_o and_o his_o heart_n be_v knit_v to_o they_o and_o the_o league_n and_o combination_n between_o sin_n and_o his_o soul_n be_v never_o break_v and_o part_v so_o that_o by_o this_o we_o may_v see_v why_o a_o sinner_n in_o his_o own_o apprehension_n may_v think_v he_o have_v no_o delight_n in_o sin_n and_o yet_o there_o be_v a_o league_n between_o sin_n and_o the_o soul_n still_o and_o this_o hypocrite_n may_v thus_o continue_v all_o the_o while_n the_o sound_n of_o the_o stroke_n be_v upon_o he_o if_o haply_o his_o affection_n be_v stir_v after_o some_o sin_n then_o say_v conscience_n you_o remember_v what_o be_v do_v before_o you_o remember_v what_o you_o do_v such_o and_o such_o a_o time_n will_v you_o fain_o be_v in_o hell_n again_o i_o will_v arrest_v you_o for_o this_o one_o day_n say_v conscience_n and_o so_o his_o soul_n fly_v off_o from_o his_o curse_a distemper_n not_o that_o the_o union_n between_o sin_n and_o his_o soul_n be_v break_v but_o only_o his_o corruption_n for_o it_o do_v you_o think_v that_o all_o those_o who_o be_v not_o careful_a to_o prevent_v those_o inconvenience_n which_o may_v hinder_v they_o from_o the_o benefit_n of_o the_o gospel_n do_v you_o up_o by_o the_o law_n but_o if_o it_o have_v only_o here_o a_o balk_v and_o there_o a_o balk_v than_o it_o be_v base_a deal_n and_o you_o will_v never_o have_v harvest_n nor_o hope_n of_o mercy_n christ_n he_o will_v have_v whereas_o the_o faithful_a soul_n match_v with_o christ_n and_o trade_n with_o the_o world_n if_o honour_n will_v advance_v christ_n and_o if_o riches_n will_v make_v for_o christ_n and_o if_o his_o liberty_n will_v work_v in_o he_o a_o free_a heart_n to_o serve_v god_n than_o the_o faithful_a soul_n will_v trade_v with_o they_o but_o this_o wretch_n will_v only_o trade_v with_o christ_n and_o christ_n must_v stand_v at_o the_o door_n this_o be_v the_o cause_n why_o when_o he_o profess_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n if_o a_o better_a match_n come_v so_o manage_v as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o man_n that_o have_v a_o fair_a estate_n and_o be_v leave_v marvellous_a well_o if_o he_o will_v have_v the_o benefit_n of_o his_o estate_n first_o he_o must_v manage_v it_o second_o he_o must_v maintain_v he_o and_o he_o out_o of_o the_o gain_n of_o it_o so_o manage_v particular_a 1_o first_o the_o lord_n have_v leave_v you_o well_o and_o you_o have_v wherewithal_o to_o live_v like_o man_n and_o like_o christian_a man_n too_o yea_o a_o happy_a life_n that_o you_o may_v go_v sing_v to_o your_o grave_n and_o go_v rejoice_v up_o to_o heaven_n and_o you_o have_v faith_n too_o only_o you_o want_v some_o skill_n to_o use_v it_o for_o it_o be_v not_o conceive_v that_o you_o be_v well_o stock_v and_o store_v but_o it_o be_v require_v that_o you_o shall_v husband_n the_o promise_n well_o and_o enjoy_v they_o as_o your_o own_o and_o live_v by_o the_o comfort_n of_o the_o promise_n the_o promise_n be_v we_o and_o we_o have_v they_o in_o hand_n if_o we_o can_v but_o bring_v our_o heart_n to_o approve_v they_o aright_o now_o that_o we_o must_v manage_v the_o promise_n aright_o two_o thing_n be_v main_o observable_a though_o there_o be_v substance_n of_o thing_n hope_v for_o and_o the_o evidence_n of_o thing_n not_o see_v all_o that_o glory_n and_o happiness_n in_o heaven_n not_o yet_o see_v and_o not_o yet_o in_o fruition_n faith_n will_v make_v all_o that_o happiness_n within_o view_n and_o put_v we_o into_o possession_n of_o they_o and_o make_v they_o have_v a_o be_v to_o our_o soul_n faith_n it_o be_v that_o bring_v christ_n and_o make_v christ_n present_a and_o in_o christ_n all_o present_v all_o glory_n be_v in_o christ_n who_o be_v the_o author_n of_o it_o and_o faith_n make_v all_o that_o glory_n present_a all_o happiness_n in_o christ_n who_o be_v the_o worker_n of_o it_o and_o faith_n make_v all_o that_o happiness_n to_o be_v present_a so_o that_o by_o faith_n lay_v hold_n on_o thy_o saviour_n not_o only_o to_o take_v comfort_n but_o to_o make_v all_o that_o happiness_n and_o good_a that_o be_v eternal_o to_o be_v present_a as_o luke_n 12.32_o fear_v not_o little_a flock_n but_o may_v they_o not_o say_v how_o shall_v we_o choose_v but_o fear_n see_v there_o be_v nothing_o but_o sin_n within_o that_o deserve_v punishment_n and_o enemy_n without_o that_o breath_n forth_o threaten_n o_o but_o a_o and_o the_o eternal_a and_o everlasting_a good_a and_o comfort_n of_o it_o now_o when_o we_o look_v only_o to_o the_o present_a good_a of_o it_o this_o be_v ill_a husbandry_n for_o we_o let_v the_o better_a part_n of_o the_o stock_n lie_v dead_a by_o we_o and_o do_v not_o trade_n with_o it_o as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o world_n for_o temporal_a mean_n so_o it_o be_v for_o our_o spiritual_a estate_n for_o spiritual_a succour_n and_o supply_v though_o a_o man_n have_v little_a for_o the_o present_a yet_o if_o he_o have_v some_o old_a reversion_n to_o come_v this_o bear_v up_o his_o heart_n in_o the_o time_n of_o poverty_n and_o misery_n and_o he_o say_v if_o he_o can_v but_o make_v a_o scramble_a shift_n for_o so_o long_a time_n than_o he_o hope_v to_o live_v as_o well_o as_o any_o man_n in_o the_o country_n so_o that_o there_o be_v not_o some_o of_o the_o promise_n that_o we_o have_v in_o possession_n but_o there_o be_v the_o reversion_n of_o old_a rent_n as_o old_a rent_n of_o farm_n that_o be_v let_v long_o ago_o when_o the_o lease_n come_v out_o they_o be_v worth_a treble_a the_o rent_n they_o be_v let_v at_o the_o first_o so_o there_o be_v the_o old_a rent_n of_o comfort_n and_o mercy_n as_o come_v you_o bless_v of_o my_o father_n inherit_v the_o kingdom_n prepare_v for_o you_o then_o no_o more_o tear_n no_o more_o trouble_n no_o more_o sorrow_n no_o more_o sin_n get_v those_o into_o your_o hand_n and_o have_v they_o in_o use_n and_o say_v the_o day_n will_v come_v when_o we_o shall_v have_v happiness_n bliss_n and_o joy_n beyond_o all_o that_o the_o tongue_n of_o man_n can_v express_v or_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n conceive_v though_o we_o be_v buffet_v with_o many_o temptation_n and_o weary_v with_o a_o world_n of_o corruption_n yet_o we_o shall_v be_v save_v say_v faith_n thus_o a_o man_n may_v make_v a_o pretty_a good_a shift_n to_o live_v upon_o these_o term_n though_o we_o have_v nothing_o else_o to_o live_v upon_o in_o the_o world_n therefore_o remember_v what_o now_o i_o speak_v labour_v to_o fasten_v this_o truth_n upon_o thy_o heart_n that_o there_o be_v not_o only_o present_a good_a in_o thyself_o but_o in_o another_o and_o reserve_v by_o another_o for_o thy_o comfort_n and_o be_v thou_o content_a that_o it_o shall_v be_v so_o not_o only_o to_o look_v what_o thou_o have_v but_o consider_v that_o the_o great_a part_n of_o thy_o glory_n be_v in_o the_o glory_n of_o a_o christ_n and_o the_o great_a part_n of_o thy_o wisdom_n be_v in_o the_o wisdom_n of_o a_o christ_n and_o thy_o liberty_n in_o the_o liberty_n of_o a_o christ_n and_o thy_o riches_n in_o the_o riches_n of_o a_o christ_n and_o know_v that_o whatsoever_o be_v in_o christ_n thou_o have_v it_o all_o as_o thou_o john_n 3.12_o behold_v what_o
