we_o must_v stick_v that_o the_o father_n be_v god_n the_o son_n be_v god_n and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n god_n and_o yet_o there_o be_v not_o three_o god_n but_o one_o god_n and_o must_v conclude_v with_o ourselves_o that_o there_o be_v some_o way_n which_o god_n have_v not_o think_v fit_a to_o reveal_v to_o we_o perhaps_o because_o we_o be_v not_o now_o capable_a of_o understand_v it_o whereby_o these_o three_o be_v one_o now_o in_o all_o this_o there_o be_v no_o absurdity_n or_o contradiction_n but_o the_o only_a difficulty_n be_v whether_o this_o be_v sufficient_a but_o if_o god_n have_v reveal_v this_o and_o reveal_v no_o more_o that_o aught_o to_o be_v no_o difficulty_n this_o be_v not_o sufficient_a to_o gratify_v man_n curiosity_n or_o to_o answer_v all_o those_o question_n that_o we_o will_v indeed_o be_v glad_a to_o hear_v resolve_v but_o without_o go_v far_o here_o be_v sufficient_a in_o this_o to_o answer_v those_o end_n which_o we_o may_v suppose_v god_n have_v in_o reveal_v it_o for_o 1._o if_o the_o father_n son_n and_o holy_a ghost_n be_v god_n here_o be_v sufficient_a foundation_n for_o divine_a worship_n to_o be_v pay_v to_o each_o of_o them_o so_o that_o this_o doctrine_n of_o the_o trinity_n be_v not_o as_o our_o author_n represent_v it_o a_o doctrine_n of_o mere_a speculation_n but_o be_v a_o foundation_n of_o one_o of_o the_o great_a religious_a duty_n the_o worship_n of_o god_n if_o jesus_n christ_n be_v represent_v to_o i_o in_o scripture_n as_o god_n as_o god_n bless_v for_o ever_o i_o ought_v then_o to_o worship_v he_o though_o i_o do_v know_v how_o far_o he_o be_v distinct_a from_o the_o father_n or_o the_o holy_a ghost_n or_o how_o these_o three_o be_v but_o one_o god_n 2._o we_o may_v from_o the_o revelation_n of_o so_o much_o understand_v the_o chief_a point_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n the_o great_a doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n of_o the_o redemption_n of_o the_o world_n by_o jesus_n christ_n can_v be_v understand_v without_o it_o but_o with_o it_o we_o can_v give_v such_o a_o account_n as_o can_v be_v expect_v of_o a_o matter_n of_o so_o high_a a_o nature_n of_o the_o dignity_n of_o our_o saviour_n person_n that_o the_o word_n be_v make_v flesh_n 3.16_o joh._n 1.14_o 1_o tim._n 3.16_o that_o god_n be_v manifest_v in_o the_o flesh_n and_o thence_o of_o the_o great_a love_n of_o god_n and_o of_o our_o saviour_n jesus_n christ_n to_o we_o who_o though_o he_o be_v in_o the_o form_n of_o god_n 7._o philip._n 2.6_o 7._o yet_o for_o our_o jakes_n humble_v himself_o even_o to_o the_o death_n of_o the_o cross_n we_o have_v hence_o a_o reason_n of_o the_o great_a value_n and_o merit_n of_o his_o suffering_n which_o must_v needs_o be_v very_o great_a in_o such_o a_o person_n who_o when_o he_o come_v into_o the_o world_n 1.6_o heb._n 1.6_o all_o the_o angel_n of_o god_n be_v to_o worship_n which_o can_v be_v account_v for_o without_o such_o a_o ineffable_a union_n to_o the_o divine_a nature_n as_o make_v the_o person_n jesus_n christ_n to_o be_v true_o god_n and_o to_o name_v no_o more_o this_o give_v we_o a_o account_n of_o our_o be_v baptise_a in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o father_n son_n and_o holy_a ghost_n of_o which_o without_o the_o belief_n of_o each_o of_o they_o to_o be_v god_n it_o will_v be_v a_o hard_a matter_n to_o give_v a_o good_a account_n but_o with_o this_o we_o may_v without_o know_v how_o far_o each_o be_v distinguish_v from_o the_o other_o but_o my_o design_n be_v only_o to_o touch_v upon_o these_o thing_n to_o show_v that_o what_o god_n have_v reveal_v have_v not_o those_o absurdity_n in_o it_o our_o author_n suggest_v and_o be_v sufficient_a to_o answer_v all_o the_o wise_a end_n of_o the_o revelation_n perhaps_o as_o much_o as_o if_o we_o have_v be_v tell_v more_o and_o if_o man_n will_v go_v further_o than_o this_o and_o then_o quarrel_v with_o one_o another_o it_o be_v not_o the_o revelation_n of_o god_n but_o their_o own_o notion_n which_o they_o quarrel_v about_o but_o to_o return_v now_o to_o the_o matter_n of_o deism_n i_o be_o afraid_a that_o it_o be_v but_o too_o true_a that_o these_o controversy_n have_v be_v a_o prejudice_n to_o the_o christian_a religion_n but_o then_o i_o believe_v the_o gild_n of_o this_o must_v light_v chief_o upon_o our_o author_n friend_n the_o socinian_o who_o have_v make_v it_o their_o business_n to_o expose_v and_o ridicule_n those_o doctrine_n which_o will_v be_v find_v after_o all_o to_o be_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o holy_a scripture_n and_o to_o have_v be_v the_o belief_n of_o christian_n in_o all_o age_n which_o as_o it_o be_v in_o itself_o a_o very_a great_a argument_n for_o the_o truth_n of_o they_o so_o on_o the_o other_o side_n it_o must_v be_v a_o mighty_a shock_n to_o christianity_n to_o represent_v those_o thing_n as_o absurd_a and_o contradictory_n which_o have_v be_v for_o so_o long_a the_o common_a faith_n of_o christian_n and_o indeed_o it_o will_v be_v a_o hard_a matter_n to_o have_v any_o great_a opinion_n of_o that_o religion_n which_o have_v be_v in_o the_o world_n for_o above_o sixteen_o hundred_o year_n and_o have_v hardly_o ever_o yet_o have_v any_o professor_n but_o those_o who_o have_v gross_o misunderstand_v and_o misrepresent_v it_o but_o it_o be_v not_o my_o business_n to_o recriminate_a and_o i_o have_v design_o hitherto_o avoid_v it_o that_o i_o may_v not_o give_v any_o occasion_n to_o quarrel_n of_o which_o god_n know_v the_o world_n be_v but_o too_o full_a already_o god_n in_o mercy_n forgive_v all_o those_o who_o have_v any_o way_n do_v any_o thing_n to_o the_o prejudice_n of_o so_o holy_a a_o religion_n and_o grant_v that_o they_o may_v repent_v and_o by_o their_o zeal_n and_o concern_v for_o still_o like_a to_o be_v so_o notwithstanding_o all_o the_o difficulty_n either_o the_o dispute_n of_o its_o friend_n or_o the_o opposition_n of_o its_o enemy_n can_v load_v it_o with_o a_o very_a good_a evidence_n this_o that_o it_o be_v very_o well_o found_v since_o so_o many_o shock_n have_v not_o be_v able_a to_o overthrow_v it_o and_o methinks_v there_o may_v be_v fetch_v some_o evidence_n for_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n itself_o from_o the_o opposition_n which_o this_o and_o some_o other_o of_o its_o doctrine_n have_v meet_v with_o in_o the_o world_n none_o of_o its_o enemy_n can_v prove_v any_o absurdity_n or_o contradiction_n in_o they_o but_o it_o must_v be_v confess_v that_o they_o be_v such_o as_o be_v not_o in_o themselves_o very_o plausible_a and_o take_v or_o very_o apt_a in_o their_o own_o nature_n to_o win_v upon_o the_o world_n and_o therefore_o we_o see_v that_o the_o apostle_n complain_v that_o preach_v up_o christ_n and_o the_o method_n of_o our_o redemption_n by_o he_o be_v to_o the_o jew_n a_o stumbling-block_n and_o to_o the_o greek_n foolishness_n if_o we_o add_v to_o this_o consideration_n what_o a_o mighty_a prejudice_n the_o world_n common_o have_v against_o receive_v any_o thing_n upon_o the_o credit_n of_o such_o mean_a person_n as_o the_o first_o preacher_n of_o christianity_n be_v it_o will_v be_v very_o hard_a to_o conceive_v how_o this_o religion_n shall_v ever_o have_v prevail_v unless_o god_n have_v in_o some_o extraordinary_a manner_n concur_v with_o it_o the_o truth_n be_v it_o be_v not_o easy_a to_o imagine_v how_o these_o thing_n shall_v ever_o have_v come_v into_o any_o body_n head_n unless_o god_n have_v reveal_v they_o but_o beside_o if_o man_n have_v have_v a_o mind_n to_o invent_v they_o will_v have_v think_v of_o something_o more_o plausible_a and_o of_o all_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n they_o will_v never_o have_v make_v it_o their_o choice_n to_o preach_v up_o a_o crucify_a saviour_n certain_o nothing_o but_o a_o full_a conviction_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o it_o can_v ever_o have_v persuade_v a_o few_o mean_a people_n of_o a_o despise_a nation_n to_o think_v of_o convert_v the_o world_n to_o such_o a_o doctrine_n
in_o the_o world_n may_v be_v sometime_o mistake_v and_o because_o he_o be_v a_o honest_a man_n will_n if_o there_o be_v occasion_n suffer_v for_o that_o mistake_n but_o the_o cause_n for_o which_o the_o apostle_n and_o first_o christian_n suffer_v be_v of_o a_o different_a nature_n and_o such_o as_o they_o can_v not_o be_v mistake_v about_o a_o great_a part_n of_o what_o they_o preach_v to_o the_o world_n be_v plain_a and_o open_a matter_n of_o fact_n that_o they_o see_v their_o saviour_n frequent_o do_v miracle_n that_o they_o see_v he_o heal_v the_o sick_a cast_v out_o devil_n raise_v the_o dead_a by_o his_o bare_a word_n that_o they_o see_v the_o wonder_n at_o his_o own_o death_n that_o they_o see_v he_o frequent_o after_o his_o resurrection_n that_o he_o give_v they_o such_o and_o such_o instruction_n to_o preach_v to_o the_o world_n that_o they_o see_v the_o miraculous_a effusion_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n at_o the_o day_n of_o peutecost_n that_o they_o hear_v the_o whole_a multitude_n of_o their_o friend_n and_o acquaintance_n who_o they_o know_v before_o to_o speak_v with_o tongue_n they_o have_v never_o be_v teach_v that_o this_o gift_n and_o that_o of_o work_v other_o miracle_n be_v common_a in_o the_o church_n and_o frequent_o and_o open_o exercise_v these_o be_v plain_a and_o open_a matter_n of_o fact_n such_o as_o they_o can_v not_o mistake_v in_o such_o as_o must_v be_v true_a or_o else_o the_o most_o impudent_a lie_n that_o ever_o be_v tell_v and_o yet_o these_o be_v the_o thing_n for_o which_o they_o do_v so_o joyful_o suffer_v the_o loss_n of_o all_o and_o undergo_v all_o that_o be_v hard_a to_o human_a nature_n to_o conclude_v this_o head_n there_o can_v be_v no_o reason_n imagine_v why_o our_o saviour_n and_o his_o apostle_n shall_v choose_v such_o part_n to_o act_v in_o the_o world_n without_o a_o full_a conviction_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o what_o they_o say_v as_o for_o our_o bless_a saviour_n he_o be_v to_o be_v a_o man_n of_o sorrow_n and_o acquaint_v with_o grief_n to_o live_v a_o mean_a and_o a_o despise_a life_n and_o at_o last_o to_o be_v cut_v off_o for_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o people_n which_o certain_o be_v no_o eligible_a part_n unless_o upon_o those_o noble_a motive_n upon_o which_o we_o suppose_v he_o undertake_v it_o and_o as_o for_o the_o apostle_n and_o first_o christian_n it_o can_v be_v imagine_v what_o shall_v make_v they_o take_v so_o much_o pain_n run_v up_o and_o down_o the_o world_n with_o so_o much_o zeal_n preach_v with_o so_o much_o concern_v and_o suffer_v bond_n and_o imprisonment_n ignominy_n and_o contempt_n and_o at_o last_o death_n itself_o with_o so_o much_o joy_n unless_o they_o be_v full_o satisfy_v of_o the_o reality_n of_o those_o great_a thing_n they_o preach_v to_o the_o world_n this_o be_v plain_o the_o case_n of_o the_o first_o preacher_n and_o promoter_n of_o christianity_n we_o may_v from_o hence_o infer_v that_o the_o christian_a religion_n be_v no_o politic_a invention_n or_o trick_n of_o state_n to_o serve_v any_o end_n or_o design_n of_o government_n upon_o the_o people_n this_o be_v indeed_o a_o very_a common_a objection_n against_o religion_n that_o it_o be_v only_o a_o art_n of_o governor_n to_o keep_v people_n in_o order_n and_o so_o to_o serve_v their_o turn_n of_o they_o and_o it_o must_v be_v confess_v that_o to_o person_n who_o do_v not_o examine_v thing_n to_o the_o bottom_n there_o have_v be_v occasion_n give_v to_o make_v this_o objection_n for_o in_o most_o age_n and_o nation_n person_n in_o authority_n as_o well_o as_o private_a man_n have_v serve_v their_o own_o design_n under_o pretence_n of_o religion_n sometime_o by_o invent_v thing_n to_o work_v upon_o people_n superstition_n at_o other_o time_n by_o encourage_v party_n or_o any_o particular_a opinion_n as_o may_v best_o serve_v their_o own_o interest_n these_o thing_n no_o question_n have_v be_v frequent_o do_v and_o therefore_o we_o have_v reason_n to_o suspect_v any_o thing_n if_o we_o can_v give_v no_o better_o a_o account_n of_o its_o original_a but_o as_o for_o those_o who_o argue_v from_o hence_o against_o religion_n in_o general_n and_o say_v it_o be_v all_o a_o politic_a device_n i_o desire_v they_o will_v not_o be_v too_o hasty_a but_o consider_v well_o what_o they_o mean_v by_o religion_n as_o for_o the_o principle_n of_o be_v just_a and_o honest_a and_o true_a to_o their_o word_n and_o the_o like_a these_o be_v thing_n we_o have_v plain_a reason_n for_o and_o therefore_o these_o though_o they_o may_v be_v make_v use_n of_o to_o serve_v a_o turn_v yet_o can_v be_v invention_n of_o state_n and_o as_o for_o the_o christian_a religion_n none_o of_o its_o enemy_n ever_o pretend_v that_o it_o come_v into_o the_o world_n in_o this_o manner_n all_o that_o state_n or_o kingdom_n have_v to_o do_v with_o it_o for_o several_a age_n be_v only_o to_o persecute_v it_o and_o its_o professor_n not_o but_o that_o the_o christian_a religion_n may_v have_v be_v since_o make_v use_n of_o to_o serve_v design_n as_o well_o as_o any_o other_o and_o have_v have_v several_a thing_n add_v to_o it_o with_o that_o prospect_n man_n that_o i_o know_v of_o ever_o yet_o pretend_v the_o contrary_a that_o this_o be_v no_o such_o invention_n and_o if_o they_o will_v but_o grant_v we_o the_o principle_n of_o natural_a religion_n and_o the_o christian_a religion_n we_o will_v grant_v they_o if_o they_o please_v that_o all_o the_o rest_n be_v only_a trick_n and_o design_n 2._o since_o it_o be_v plain_a that_o the_o apostle_n and_o first_o preacher_n of_o christianity_n can_v propose_v no_o worldly_a interest_n to_o themselves_o in_o what_o they_o do_v but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n meet_v with_o scorn_n and_o contempt_n tell_v we_o than_o this_o religion_n must_v be_v true_a and_o therefore_o that_o be_v the_o thing_n to_o be_v inquire_v after_o but_o he_o that_o will_v but_o reflect_v a_o little_a upon_o what_o have_v be_v say_v can_v hardly_o doubt_v of_o that_o unless_o human_a nature_n be_v a_o different_a thing_n then_o from_o what_o it_o be_v now_o and_o man_n have_v then_o as_o strong_a a_o desire_n kind_n which_o be_v the_o only_a thing_n that_o can_v be_v pretend_v beside_o from_o what_o have_v be_v say_v of_o the_o apostle_n etc._n etc._n no_o man_n can_v reasonable_o doubt_v of_o their_o be_v honest_a man_n and_o real_o believe_v what_o they_o say_v to_o be_v true_a so_o that_o there_o remain_v nothing_o but_o to_o see_v whether_o they_o be_v deceieve_v or_o no._n but_o as_o i_o show_v before_o a_o great_a part_n of_o the_o thing_n they_o preach_v and_o such_o as_o confirm_v the_o truth_n of_o all_o the_o rest_n be_v plain_a and_o open_a matter_n of_o fact_n the_o thing_n which_o they_o have_v see_v and_o hear_v and_o those_o repeat_v in_o so_o many_o instance_n that_o they_o can_v not_o be_v deceive_v as_o may_v appear_v to_o any_o that_o will_v but_o consider_v what_o have_v be_v say_v before_o or_o read_v careful_o over_o the_o history_n record_v in_o the_o evangelist_n and_o the_o act_n of_o the_o apostle_n matter_n of_o opinion_n and_o speculation_n may_v easy_o be_v impose_v upon_o fanciful_a people_n but_o such_o a_o series_n of_o matter_n of_o fact_n can_v be_v impose_v upon_o man_n sight_n and_o hear_v and_o yet_o if_o those_o be_v true_a all_o the_o rest_n of_o our_o religion_n must_v be_v true_a too_o 4._o this_o show_v we_o a_o manifest_a difference_n betwixt_o the_o miracle_n wrought_v by_o the_o apostle_n etc._n etc._n and_o some_o that_o have_v be_v since_o pretend_v in_o confirmation_n of_o the_o popish_a error_n that_o the_o apostle_n plain_o can_v have_v no_o interest_n to_o invent_v or_o relate_v matter_n false_o if_o they_o do_v not_o believe_v their_o religion_n true_a it_o be_v their_o interest_n to_o lay_v it_o down_o and_o have_v nothing_o more_o to_o do_v with_o it_o but_o as_o for_o the_o other_o to_o say_v no_o worse_o of_o they_o they_o do_v evident_o serve_v a_o turn_v and_o what_o do_v so_o unless_o there_o be_v very_o good_a evidence_n for_o it_o we_o have_v just_a reason_n to_o suspect_v have_v do_v in_o short_a with_o what_o i_o design_v to_o speak_v to_o about_o the_o christian_a religion_n i_o will_v now_o serious_o address_v myself_o to_o those_o who_o have_v any_o doubt_n about_o these_o matter_n and_o especial_o to_o those_o who_o set_v up_o for_o deism_n in_o england_n the_o matter_n be_v certain_o of_o very_o great_a consequence_n and_o what_o we_o be_v all_o very_a much_o concern_v in_o and_o therefore_o do_v at_o least_o deserve_v a_o serious_a examination_n and_o not_o to_o be_v slight_o pass_v over_o or_o make_v matter_n of_o jest_n as_o have_v be_v the_o custom_n of_o too_o many_o
