glimpse_n of_o all_o these_o which_o go_v home_o to_o the_o top_n of_o the_o affection_n and_o will_v that_o the_o lord_n by_o a_o spiritual_a kind_n of_o flash_n sudden_o pass_v by_o the_o will_n so_o that_o he_o leave_v some_o kind_n of_o dew_n and_o some_o remembrance_n of_o those_o glorious_a thing_n which_o be_v thus_o let_v in_o upon_o the_o mind_n of_o a_o poor_a sinner_n insomuch_o that_o his_o heart_n be_v marvellous_o tickle_v and_o ravish_v with_o it_o i_o express_v it_o thus_o as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o water_n in_o a_o stand_a pool_n and_o the_o water_n that_o run_v through_o a_o pipe_n the_o stand_a water_n soak_v and_o go_v downward_o and_o settle_v inward_o in_o the_o earth_n but_o the_o water_n that_o pass_v by_o sudden_o leave_v only_o a_o little_a dew_n sudden_o and_o leave_v a_o little_a dew_n behind_o it_o so_o that_o he_o say_v oh_o this_o be_v good_a this_o be_v sweet_a i_o may_v be_v save_v too_o may_v i_o not_o oh_o i_o never_o hear_v a_o man_n speak_v so_o comfortable_o this_o word_n bedew_v the_o heart_n a_o little_a but_o it_o soak_v not_o down_o it_o go_v not_o to_o the_o root_n of_o the_o soul_n &_o therefore_o observe_v it_o this_o be_v a_o work_n which_o the_o hypocrite_n may_v have_v only_o observe_v thus_o much_o he_o sip_v of_o grace_n and_o salvation_n and_o make_v a_o meal_n of_o his_o corruption_n but_o the_o gracious_a man_n only_o sip_v of_o his_o corruption_n and_o make_v a_o meal_n of_o grace_n of_o holiness_n &_o mercy_n in_o christ_n look_v as_o it_o be_v with_o seed_n that_o be_v cast_v into_o the_o womb_n of_o a_o woman_n the_o seed_n be_v enough_o to_o beget_v some_o fruit_n but_o if_o the_o womb_n be_v a_o miscarry_v womb_n it_o come_v to_o nothing_o so_o it_o be_v between_o the_o stir_n of_o the_o word_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o poor_a saint_n and_o in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o hypocrite_n the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n work_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o hypocrite_n by_o the_o word_n and_o be_v able_a to_o moisten_v he_o but_o the_o heart_n miscarry_v in_o the_o work_n and_o resist_v and_o gainsay_v and_o never_o come_v to_o any_o good_a he_o never_o come_v to_o be_v a_o faithful_a man_n right_o proportion_v whereas_o the_o same_o spirit_n of_o god_n work_v right_o upon_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o believer_n it_o make_v he_o a_o very_a proportionable_a christian_a the_o other_o remain_v but_o a_o confuse_a lump_n now_o see_v what_o this_o man_n may_v do_v when_o he_o come_v to_o this_o let_v he_o be_v thus_o bedew_v with_o this_o taste_n of_o the_o excellency_n of_o faith_n and_o never_o have_v faith_n strengthen_v and_o root_v in_o he_o yet_o he_o will_v be_v very_o eager_a in_o the_o pursuit_n of_o the_o word_n and_o marvellous_a constant_a in_o attend_v upon_o the_o word_n because_o it_o be_v his_o delight_n and_o he_o will_v be_v marvellous_a painful_a to_o get_v the_o word_n for_o a_o man_n will_v do_v any_o thing_n to_o get_v his_o delight_n and_o he_o may_v be_v angry_a with_o such_o as_o will_v hinder_v he_o in_o the_o pursuit_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o be_v his_o delight_n this_o a_o man_n may_v do_v and_o yet_o all_o come_v to_o nothing_o and_o so_o may_v perish_v everlasting_o for_o look_v what_o joy_n and_o delight_n will_v do_v for_o a_o push_n the_o same_o a_o carnal_a temporary_a may_v do_v but_o that_o this_o man_n will_v do_v all_o image_n of_o grace_n whereby_o we_o may_v live_v than_o it_o be_v not_o the_o image_n which_o former_o we_o have_v in_o adam_n nor_o to_o which_o we_o be_v renew_v again_o in_o sanctification_n but_o the_o first_o be_v true_a namely_o that_o it_o be_v faith_n that_o go_v to_o fetch_v that_o spiritual_a power_n from_o god_n which_o we_o â—ost_o in_o adam_n therefore_o it_o be_v not_o that_o spiritual_a power_n this_o be_v the_o point_n of_o information_n belove_a â—n_n our_o saviour_n christ_n i_o be_o not_o ignorant_a that_o many_o learned_a godly_a judicious_a divine_n who_o part_n i_o reverence_n be_v of_o another_o opinion_n yet_o i_o remember_v their_o different_a opinion_n and_o therefore_o i_o hope_v â—o_o man_n will_v be_v offend_v with_o i_o though_o i_o differ_v from_o some_o for_o i_o must_v needs_o differ_v from_o some_o â—nd_v it_o have_v ever_o be_v my_o care_n not_o to_o trouble_v a_o popular_a congregation_n with_o any_o matter_n of_o disâ—ute_n and_o i_o hold_v that_o it_o rather_o shall_v be_v the_o care_n of_o minister_n to_o win_v man_n to_o faith_n than_o to_o trouble_v they_o with_o matter_n of_o this_o kind_n and_o i_o hold_v it_o the_o great_a part_n of_o zeal_n to_o get_v they_o to_o holy_a heart_n and_o to_o exact_a life_n and_o conversation_n therefore_o i_o be_o marvellous_a hardly_o draw_v on_o to_o the_o least_o dispute_n in_o this_o kind_n and_o yet_o at_o the_o earnest_a request_n of_o some_o and_o also_o because_o this_o be_v the_o proper_a place_n where_o this_o question_n fall_v and_o to_o clear_v some_o doubt_n according_a to_o my_o promise_n and_o because_o haply_o some_o good_a mâ—n_z may_v stumble_v at_o some_o thing_n therefore_o let_v i_o deliver_v those_o thought_n which_o i_o have_v many_o time_n heretofore_o intend_v to_o impart_v and_o i_o shall_v be_v very_o willing_a to_o hear_v of_o better_a argument_n if_o any_o shall_v be_v suggest_v these_o be_v spiritual_a passage_n and_o hard_a and_o difficult_a therefore_o this_o i_o will_v tell_v you_o first_o what_o the_o controversy_n be_v and_o wherein_o it_o lie_v second_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o three_o show_v the_o order_n of_o god_n proceed_n in_o this_o work_n of_o grace_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o when_o these_o be_v do_v the_o point_n will_v be_v very_o plain_a first_o for_o the_o first_o namely_o wherein_o this_o controversy_n lie_v it_o be_v confess_v of_o all_o hand_n that_o adam_n in_o his_o innocency_n do_v not_o believe_v in_o a_o saviour_n he_o need_v it_o not_o only_o here_o lie_v the_o main_a point_n of_o controversy_n that_o though_o adam_n do_v not_o believe_v in_o a_o saviour_n and_o god_n do_v not_o require_v it_o yet_o man_n conceive_v and_o some_o judicious_a divine_n too_o that_o adam_n have_v ability_n that_o if_o christ_n have_v be_v reveal_v he_o can_v have_v believe_v for_o they_o say_v thus_o a_o man_n be_v able_a have_v a_o clear_a eye_n to_o see_v but_o one_o world_n because_o there_o be_v no_o more_o but_o if_o there_o be_v five_o world_n the_o same_o eye_n that_o see_v one_o the_o same_o eye_n will_v see_v they_o all_o if_o they_o be_v visible_o make_v so_o adam_n do_v not_o believe_v a_o saviour_n because_o the_o lord_n christ_n be_v not_o reveal_v and_o administer_v to_o he_o but_o adam_n have_v that_o spiritual_a power_n of_o faith_n if_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n have_v be_v reveal_v he_o be_v able_a to_o believe_v in_o he_o and_o so_o to_o rest_v upon_o he_o as_o man_n do_v now_o in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o gospel_n this_o be_v the_o controversy_n which_o we_o flat_o deny_v second_o the_o reason_n to_o confirm_v this_o point_n that_o adam_n have_v not_o this_o grace_n of_o faith_n the_o reason_n be_v this_o this_o believe_a in_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n â—is_fw-la that_o which_o do_v direct_o cross_v the_o estate_n of_o adam_n in_o his_o innocency_n and_o the_o innocency_n of_o adam_n wherein_o he_o be_v create_v and_o therefore_o can_v by_o no_o mean_n agree_v to_o he_o and_o that_o appear_v thus_o for_o a_o man_n to_o have_v a_o principle_n of_o life_n in_o himself_o which_o adam_n have_v and_o to_o fetch_v a_o principle_n of_o life_n from_o another_o which_o we_o do_v by_o faith_n these_o be_v contrary_a the_o one_o to_o the_o other_o he_o live_v well_o and_o to_o be_v save_v by_o live_v well_o and_o to_o be_v save_v by_o another_o and_o to_o live_v well_o by_o the_o power_n of_o another_o these_o be_v contrary_n one_o to_o the_o other_o to_o have_v all_o in_o himself_o as_o adam_n have_v and_o to_o have_v all_o from_o another_o and_o not_o in_o himself_o these_o be_v contradiction_n the_o one_o to_o the_o other_o and_o therefore_o can_v stand_v together_o and_o therefore_o observe_v it_o the_o manner_n and_o phrase_n of_o scripture_n be_v this_o and_o it_o be_v very_o strange_a phil._n 3.9_o that_o i_o may_v be_v find_v in_o he_o not_o have_v my_o own_o righteousness_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v adam_z in_o his_o of_o the_o lord_n christ_n the_o case_n be_v clear_a we_o be_v not_o nor_o can_v â—he_n find_v in_o our_o own_o righteousness_n or_o in_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n but_o in_o the_o righteousness_n of_o god_n by_o faith_n impute_v to_o we_o and_o of_o his_o grace_n bestow_v on_o we_o so_o that_o these_o two_o can_v stand_v together_o so_o then_o i_o reason_v thus_o that_o which_o be_v cross_v to_o the_o innocence_n of_o adam_n and_o contradict_v the_o estate_n of_o adam_n in_o his_o innocency_n that_o can_v never_o agree_v to_o the_o estate_n of_o adam_n but_o for_o a_o man_n to_o believe_v in_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n and_o to_o have_v all_o from_o he_o if_o it_o have_v be_v reveal_v this_o have_v be_v cross_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o adam_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a that_o he_o shall_v have_v this_o faith_n in_o he_o now_o i_o come_v to_o answer_v some_o objection_n object_n .1_o first_o if_o adam_n have_v not_o this_o faith_n and_o if_o the_o lord_n do_v not_o require_v it_o at_o his_o hand_n than_o it_o seem_v that_o not_o believe_v in_o christ_n be_v not_o a_o sin_n against_o the_o law_n of_o god_n for_o god_n command_v it_o not_o iâ—_n the_o law_n answ_n 1_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o not_o believe_v in_o the_o lord_n christ_n be_v not_o a_o sin_n against_o the_o moral_a law_n but_o it_o be_v a_o sin_n against_o the_o law_n of_o in_o vocation_n and_o divine_n do_v true_o say_v that_o we_o be_v bind_v to_o trust_v in_o god_n by_o the_o first_o commandment_n but_o that_o trust_n be_v not_o this_o faith_n but_o it_o be_v of_o a_o marvellous_a far_o different_a nature_n know_v therefore_o that_o to_o trust_v and_o believe_v in_o christ_n saving_o be_v thus_o much_o when_o the_o soul_n be_v whole_o pluck_v off_o from_o itself_o and_o go_v whole_o to_o another_o for_o that_o which_o it_o have_v not_o of_o itself_o this_o adam_n have_v not_o for_o
of_o god_n and_o the_o powerful_a work_n thereof_o may_v marvellous_o snub_v and_o wound_v sin_n but_o infidelity_n will_v heal_v it_o again_o and_o will_v restore_v life_n to_o it_o again_o i_o compare_v reformation_n to_o the_o retreat_n of_o a_o army_n when_o one_o side_n be_v weak_a and_o the_o other_o side_n be_v too_o strong_a and_o they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o make_v their_o part_n good_a than_o they_o make_v a_o retreat_n and_o go_v home_o again_o to_o their_o trench_n and_o he_o that_o wise_o retreat_v himself_o though_o he_o may_v lose_v the_o day_n yet_o he_o lose_v not_o a_o man_n and_o the_o commander_n say_v such_o a_o man_n be_v wound_v and_o such_o a_o man_n be_v hurt_v a_o little_a but_o we_o come_v all_o well_o home_o they_o retreat_n into_o the_o trench_n and_o get_v more_o strength_n and_o then_o they_o levy_v our_o their_o force_n again_o so_o it_o be_v with_o outward_a reformation_n haply_o a_o man_n live_v under_o a_o powerful_a minister_n under_o a_o good_a master_n and_o in_o a_o good_a family_n and_o all_o these_o make_v sin_n retreat_n and_o he_o dare_v not_o swear_v and_o he_o can_v walk_v in_o his_o wicked_a way_n his_o master_n curb_v he_o all_o this_o while_n his_o sin_n make_v a_o retreat_n but_o there_o be_v none_o of_o they_o go_v the_o life_n of_o never_o a_o one_o of_o they_o be_v go_v so_o long_o as_o he_o have_v a_o unbelieved_a heart_n let_v the_o unbeliever_n enjoy_v never_o such_o mean_n and_o live_v in_o never_o so_o good_a a_o family_n yet_o he_o have_v not_o one_o sin_n kill_v they_o be_v only_o retreat_v and_o so_o unbelief_n nurse_v they_o and_o make_v they_o grow_v out_o with_o great_a violence_n this_o i_o take_v to_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o many_o a_o man_n that_o have_v profess_v the_o gospel_n and_o have_v have_v much_o horror_n of_o heart_n and_o many_o good_a resolution_n and_o much_o care_n express_v outward_o after_o many_o year_n his_o corruption_n break_v out_o again_o and_o get_v ground_n and_o they_o be_v arm_v afresh_o and_o they_o run_v violent_o and_o for_o any_o thing_n a_o man_n know_v they_o go_v down_o to_o hell_n how_o many_o professor_n have_v turn_v to_o be_v unclean_a person_n and_o to_o be_v drunkard_n because_o their_o old_a sin_n be_v but_o only_o snub_v by_o good_a company_n and_o the_o word_n etc._n etc._n but_o they_o never_o have_v their_o heart_n thorough_o break_v the_o root_n that_o nurse_v all_o be_v still_o the_o same_o and_o therefore_o they_o break_v out_o notorious_o to_o the_o dishonour_n of_o god_n the_o scandal_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o confusion_n of_o their_o own_o soul_n if_o god_n be_v not_o merciful_a four_o as_o unbelief_n keep_v god_n from_o the_o soul_n and_o make_v all_o mean_n unprofitable_a and_o maintain_v all_o sin_n in_o the_o strength_n and_o life_n of_o it_o so_o last_o it_o make_v the_o soul_n of_o a_o poor_a sinner_n to_o be_v in_o a_o desperate_a estate_n and_o a_o man_n continue_v in_o this_o condition_n be_v past_a hope_n help_v &_o recovery_n believe_v be_v the_o last_o covenant_n that_o ever_o god_n have_v express_v a_o man_n may_v be_v save_v and_o not_o do_v the_o law_n but_o a_o man_n can_v be_v save_v if_o he_o do_v not_o believe_v that_o be_v the_o last_o covenant_n and_o condition_n of_o all_o and_o if_o he_o stick_v here_o he_o be_v past_o all_o recovery_n without_o a_o wonderful_a work_n from_o heaven_n heb._n 3.18_o there_o the_o lord_n take_v a_o solemn_a oath_n that_o they_o that_o will_v not_o believe_v shall_v never_o enter_v into_o his_o rest_n to_o who_o do_v he_o swear_v leg_n to_o go_v to_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n no_o further_o than_o the_o lord_n give_v we_o leg_n i_o mean_v spiritual_a power_n then_o let_v we_o all_o know_v it_o and_o conclude_v it_o that_o it_o be_v not_o only_o hard_a and_o difficult_a but_o also_o impossible_a for_o man_n from_o any_o power_n of_o his_o own_o to_o rest_v upon_o god_n promise_n by_o the_o work_n of_o faith_n it_o be_v true_a indeed_o we_o can_v do_v thus_o much_o we_o can_v settle_v ourselves_o upon_o our_o own_o bottom_n and_o rest_v ourselves_o upon_o our_o own_o sufficiency_n and_o if_o a_o man_n have_v part_n and_o gift_n we_o can_v we_o do_v natural_o stay_v ourselves_o upon_o these_o break_a prop_n and_o our_o soul_n go_v that_o way_n natural_o as_o heavy_a thing_n natural_o go_v downward_o this_o we_o can_v do_v out_o of_o the_o power_n of_o corrupt_a nature_n thus_o we_o be_v ourselves_o and_o we_o rest_v upon_o ourselves_o in_o a_o word_n when_o a_o man_n find_v part_n and_o gift_n and_o mean_n and_o then_o to_o rest_v upon_o god_n and_o to_o cast_v away_o all_o carnal_a confidence_n and_o to_o cast_v ourselves_o upon_o the_o free_a grace_n of_o god_n it_o will_v cost_v we_o much_o work_n wit_n and_o quickness_n of_o memory_n and_o all_o natural_a ability_n none_o of_o all_o these_o can_v make_v thou_o able_a to_o work_v faith_n in_o thyself_o matth._n 11.25_o 26_o 27._o when_o christ_n have_v consider_v the_o hardness_n and_o difficulty_n of_o the_o work_n of_o faith_n and_o have_v upbraid_v the_o pharisee_n because_o they_o believe_v not_o at_o last_o he_o say_v i_o must_v work_v it_o babe_n themselves_o shall_v have_v these_o thing_n reveal_v and_o shall_v be_v make_v able_a to_o believe_v when_o thou_o with_o all_o thy_o part_n and_o gift_n and_o wisdom_n because_o not_o only_a corruption_n oppose_v the_o work_n of_o faith_n but_o even_o a_o man_n gift_n and_o self_n and_o sufficiency_n which_o god_n give_v he_o that_o now_o and_o then_o seem_v to_o be_v the_o hindrance_n of_o faith_n it_o be_v through_o our_o corruption_n indeed_o in_o other_o thing_n it_o be_v not_o so_o we_o will_v fain_o get_v sorrow_n and_o therefore_o we_o labour_v for_o it_o and_o we_o will_v have_v love_n and_o therefore_o we_o labour_v for_o it_o but_o all_o this_o be_v out_o of_o our_o own_o power_n or_o ability_n we_o will_v keep_v we_o in_o ourselves_o but_o faith_n will_v have_v we_o go_v out_o to_o christ_n and_o our_o part_n will_v work_v this_o in_o we_o but_o faith_n say_v we_o must_v go_v to_o the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n or_o else_o we_o be_v not_o able_a to_o do_v that_o which_o he_o command_v so_o now_o you_o see_v that_o a_o man_n part_n and_o ability_n be_v sometime_o great_a hindrance_n and_o bar_n to_o keep_v a_o man_n from_o believe_v and_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o if_o god_n open_v a_o man_n eye_n and_o discover_v a_o man_n corruption_n by_o nature_n we_o fall_v to_o do_v to_o repent_v formal_o and_o all_o this_o while_n never_o see_v a_o need_n of_o a_o christ_n but_o rest_n in_o ourselves_o and_o our_o own_o ability_n and_o will_v never_o go_v to_o christ_n thousand_o go_v to_o hell_n this_o way_n the_o most_o that_o profess_v the_o gospel_n and_o perish_v they_o perish_v upon_o this_o point_n so_o then_o the_o work_n be_v more_o than_o natural_a three_o if_o we_o consider_v the_o manner_n of_o god_n be_v strange_a to_o see_v how_o people_n will_v bear_v up_o themselves_o with_o a_o blind_a boldness_n and_o a_o wretched_a carnal_a confidence_n and_o conceit_n that_o they_o have_v faith_n it_o be_v true_a say_v they_o our_o life_n be_v not_o so_o holy_a as_o they_o ought_v and_o our_o work_n be_v not_o so_o good_a as_o they_o shall_v be_v therefore_o we_o trust_v not_o to_o our_o work_n but_o promise_n and_o receive_v all_o the_o income_n thereof_o there_o be_v two_o thing_n especial_o observable_a first_o labour_n to_o husband_n the_o promise_n and_o to_o manage_v they_o wise_o when_o we_o have_v they_o for_o our_o best_a advantage_n second_o labour_v to_o live_v by_o the_o sweetness_n of_o the_o promise_n
