on_o the_o contrary_a it_o make_v they_o liable_a to_o the_o curse_n of_o god_n quest_n 1_o quest_n 1._o be_v not_o good_a work_n then_o necessary_a to_o the_o attainment_n of_o salvation_n answ_n this_o young_a man_n to_o be_v thus_o conceit_v of_o himself_o send_v he_o to_o the_o law_n put_v he_o in_o mind_n of_o that_o perfect_a obedience_n which_o it_o require_v of_o all_o that_o look_v to_o be_v justify_v or_o save_v by_o their_o good_a work_n that_o by_o this_o mean_v he_o may_v bring_v he_o to_o a_o true_a sight_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o humble_v he_o before_o god_n if_o it_o may_v be_v this_o be_v the_o end_n our_o saviour_n aim_v at_o in_o refer_v he_o to_o the_o commandment_n of_o the_o law_n and_o require_v he_o to_o keep_v they_o perfect_o if_o he_o will_v enter_v into_o life_n that_o he_o may_v by_o this_o mean_n discover_v to_o he_o his_o sin_n and_o the_o imperfection_n of_o his_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n although_o the_o young_a man_n do_v not_o make_v so_o good_a use_n as_o he_o shall_v have_v do_v of_o our_o saviour_n admonition_n but_o stand_v still_o to_o justify_v himself_o as_o if_o he_o have_v already_o keep_v the_o law_n perfect_o etc._n etc._n goodness_n and_o righteousness_n by_o nature_n to_o such_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o law_n be_v most_o necessary_a yea_o first_o to_o be_v preach_v to_o they_o before_o they_o can_v be_v fit_a to_o have_v the_o promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n apply_v to_o they_o they_o must_v first_o have_v the_o law_n urge_v and_o press_v to_o their_o conscience_n to_o show_v they_o their_o sin_n and_o misery_n by_o nature_n how_o unable_a they_o be_v to_o keep_v the_o law_n and_o consequent_o to_o be_v justify_v or_o save_v by_o their_o own_o righteousness_n and_o good_a work_n and_o therefore_o to_o drive_v they_o out_o of_o themselves_o to_o seek_v salvation_n by_o faith_n in_o christ_n alone_o etc._n etc._n then_o be_v thus_o by_o the_o law_n true_o humble_v etc._n etc._n they_o be_v fit_a to_o hear_v the_o glad_a tiding_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o never_o till_o then_o which_o show_v the_o folly_n and_o ignorance_n of_o such_o as_o will_v not_o have_v the_o law_n preach_v but_o the_o gospel_n only_o these_o be_v their_o own_o enemy_n and_o this_o be_v all_o one_o as_o if_o a_o chirurgeon_n shall_v first_o lay_v on_o a_o heaâ—ing_a plaster_n to_o skin_n over_o a_o wound_n or_o sore_o in_o the_o body_n before_o he_o have_v search_v the_o wound_n etc._n etc._n observe_v 3_o observe_v 3._o in_o that_o our_o saviour_n appeal_v to_o his_o knowledge_n thou_o know_v the_o commandment_n etc._n etc._n we_o may_v learn_v that_o christian_n live_v in_o the_o church_n shall_v not_o be_v ignorant_a of_o the_o commandment_n of_o the_o moral_a law_n of_o god_n but_o well_o acquaint_v with_o they_o for_o else_o they_o come_v short_a of_o this_o young_a man_n here_o neither_o ought_v we_o only_o to_o know_v the_o word_n of_o the_o ten_o commandment_n but_o also_o to_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o matter_n and_o true_a meaning_n of_o they_o and_o herein_o we_o shall_v outstrip_v this_o young_a ruler_n who_o although_o he_o have_v some_o literal_a knowledge_n in_o the_o law_n and_o do_v also_o in_o some_o measure_n no_o doubt_n understand_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o commandment_n yet_o not_o so_o true_o or_o thorough_o as_o he_o shall_v have_v do_v as_o verse_n we_o hear_v the_o occasion_n of_o our_o saviour_n exhort_v his_o disciple_n to_o the_o practice_n of_o faith_n 1._o their_o take_a notice_n of_o the_o sudden_a dry_v up_o of_o the_o figtree_n the_o next_o morning_n as_o they_o go_v back_o from_o bethany_n to_o jerusalem_n 2._o peter_n acquaint_v our_o saviour_n christ_n with_o the_o matter_n etc._n etc._n now_o follow_v the_o exhortation_n this_o affiance_n or_o confidence_n in_o god_n for_o the_o obtain_n of_o those_o thing_n we_o desire_v and_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o two_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v note_v 1._o that_o it_o be_v distinguish_v from_o a_o justify_v faith_n not_o as_o a_o different_a kind_n of_o faith_n but_o only_o as_o a_o distinct_a operation_n or_o work_n of_o one_o and_o the_o same_o faith_n for_o it_o be_v one_o and_o the_o same_o faith_n for_o kind_n by_o which_o the_o true_a believer_n do_v apprehend_v christ_n and_o his_o righteousness_n etc._n etc._n and_o by_o which_o he_o do_v believe_v in_o god_n and_o trust_v on_o he_o for_o all_o other_o thing_n which_o he_o desire_v and_o be_v necessary_a and_o fit_a for_o he_o to_o receive_v and_o be_v partaker_n of_o only_o these_o be_v distinguish_v as_o two_o divers_a and_o different_a operation_n of_o one_o and_o the_o same_o faith_n 2._o note_v that_o whereas_o some_o learned_a divine_n do_v make_v this_o affaince_n or_o confidence_n in_o god_n at_o principal_o which_o be_v god_n himself_o and_o thus_o we_o be_v to_o take_v it_o here_o the_o faith_n of_o god_n be_v to_o be_v take_v here_o not_o active_a for_o that_o faith_n or_o affiance_n which_o god_n work_v in_o we_o but_o passive_a for_o that_o faith_n whereby_o we_o believe_v in_o god_n and_o trust_v on_o he_o beza_n now_o further_o our_o faith_n or_o confidence_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v in_o god_n or_o to_o be_v fix_v on_o he_o in_o two_o respect_n 1._o in_o respect_n of_o his_o divine_a nature_n and_o essence_n simple_o consider_v together_o with_o the_o distinction_n of_o his_o divine_a nature_n and_o property_n and_o to_o rely_v upon_o the_o same_o for_o the_o receive_n and_o obtain_v of_o both_o that_o gift_n and_o power_n of_o miracle_n which_o you_o desire_v as_o also_o of_o all_o other_o thing_n which_o you_o do_v desire_n and_o be_v needful_a and_o fit_a for_o you_o now_o that_o this_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o word_n may_v appear_v 1._o by_o the_o scope_n and_o occasion_n of_o they_o which_o be_v this_o peter_n and_o the_o other_o disciple_n admire_v and_o wonder_v at_o the_o miracle_n of_o christ_n in_o curse_v the_o figtree_n and_o cause_v it_o so_o sudden_o to_o wither_v etc._n etc._n and_o withal_o acquaint_v our_o saviour_n with_o the_o matter_n do_v hereby_o not_o only_o show_v their_o desire_n to_o be_v instruct_v and_o better_o but_o be_v altogether_o barren_a and_o unfruitful_a have_v only_o a_o show_n of_o religion_n and_o grace_n without_o any_o truth_n and_o substance_n thereof_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n show_v that_o they_o shall_v as_o barren_a tree_n be_v accurse_v that_o be_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n shall_v come_v upon_o they_o for_o their_o hypocrisy_n and_o unfruitfulness_n yea_o they_o shall_v by_o the_o just_a judgement_n of_o god_n be_v destroy_v and_o root_v out_o from_o be_v a_o church_n and_o people_n as_o not_o many_o year_n after_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v in_o the_o last_o and_o final_a destruction_n of_o jerusalem_n by_o the_o roman_n which_o happen_v about_o 40._o year_n after_o this_o time_n 2._o another_o end_n which_o our_o saviour_n aim_v at_o in_o curse_v this_o barren_a figtree_n be_v thereby_o to_o show_v his_o divine_a power_n in_o work_v a_o miracle_n viz._n in_o cause_v the_o figtree_n sudden_o to_o wither_v and_o dry_v up_o by_o the_o root_n 3._o that_o from_o
