sin_n be_v abroad_o and_o the_o three_o that_o of_o lazarus_n note_v that_o sort_n of_o sinner_n that_o have_v lie_v so_o long_o in_o the_o grave_n that_o he_o even_o smell_n again_o now_o i_o pray_v further_o observe_v this_o that_o when_o christ_n come_v to_o raise_v lazarus_n than_o christ_n pray_v but_o he_o do_v not_o pray_v when_o he_o raise_v the_o other_o two_o and_o he_o groan_v over_o he_o he_o do_v not_o groan_v over_o the_o maid_n nor_o over_o the_o youngman_n but_o he_o groan_v over_o lazarus_n to_o show_v the_o difficulty_n of_o raise_v a_o poor_a sinner_n from_o the_o dead_a be_v not_o justify_v by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n but_o by_o the_o faith_n of_o jesus_n christ_n whereupon_o it_o be_v or_o may_v be_v object_v if_o a_o man_n be_v not_o justify_v by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n then_o be_v he_o free_a from_o the_o law_n then_o be_v he_o dead_a unto_o the_o law_n then_o may_v a_o man_n live_v as_o he_o list_v nay_o not_o so_o say_v the_o apostle_n at_o the_o 19_o verse_n for_o i_o through_o the_o law_n be_o dead_a to_o the_o law_n that_o i_o may_v live_v to_o god_n quite_o contrary_a that_o i_o may_v live_v to_o god_n i_o be_o dead_a to_o the_o law_n yea_o and_o though_o i_o be_o crucify_v with_o christ_n yet_o now_o i_o live_v and_o i_o never_o do_v live_v till_o now_o but_o now_o i_o live_v this_o very_a principle_n of_o justification_n by_o faith_n alone_o be_v the_o fountain_n and_o original_a of_o all_o my_o spiritual_a life_n and_o thus_o indeed_o you_o shall_v find_v for_o if_o you_o look_v into_o those_o three_o epistle_n of_o paul_n to_o the_o roman_n the_o galatian_n and_o the_o hebrew_n you_o shall_v find_v that_o the_o apostle_n do_v give_v this_o as_o the_o rise_n unto_o all_o his_o exhortation_n unto_o holiness_n of_o life_n in_o the_o latter_a end_n of_o the_o epistle_n to_o the_o roman_n the_o apostle_n do_v exhort_v unto_o holy_a practice_n and_o to_o a_o godly_a conversation_n but_o in_o the_o begin_n he_o do_v state_n and_o prove_v this_o doctrine_n of_o justification_n by_o faith_n alone_o so_o in_o this_o epistle_n to_o the_o galatian_n so_o in_o the_o epistle_n to_o the_o hebrew_n as_o if_o the_o only_a rise_n of_o all_o our_o holiness_n and_o godly_a conversation_n be_v this_o our_o free-justification_n through_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n by_o faith_n alone_o for_o the_o open_n and_o clear_n of_o this_o great_a truth_n i_o shall_v spend_v a_o little_a time_n in_o the_o explication_n of_o the_o term_n first_o justification_n by_o faith_n alone_o second_o i_o shall_v labour_v to_o demonstrate_v this_o truth_n unto_o you_o that_o justification_n by_o faith_n alone_o be_v the_o fountain_n and_o original_a of_o all_o our_o holiness_n and_o spiritual_a life_n three_o answer_v to_o some_o objection_n four_o labour_n to_o show_v you_o what_o there_o be_v in_o this_o free-justification_n by_o faith_n alone_o that_o may_v can_v or_o do_v advance_v our_o holiness_n quest_n 1_o what_o be_v by_o this_o justification_n i_o mean_v that_o act_n of_o god_n grace_n whereby_o through_o the_o imputation_n of_o our_o sin_n to_o christ_n and_o christ_n righteousness_n unto_o we_o god_n the_o father_n do_v pronounce_v we_o righteous_a in_o his_o sight_n this_o be_v justification_n and_o this_o be_v do_v by_o the_o righteousness_n and_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n only_o as_o the_o material_a and_o meritorious_a cause_n it_o be_v do_v only_o by_o faith_n as_o the_o instrumental_a cause_n so_o we_o be_v say_v to_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n alone_o yet_o not_o so_o as_o that_o a_o man_n servant_n they_o have_v he_o to_o bed_n servant_n have_v their_o master_n and_o mistress_n to_o bed_n tend_v upon_o they_o to_o bed_n but_o they_o do_v not_o go_v into_o the_o bed_n with_o they_o they_o be_v with_o they_o again_o in_o the_o morning_n they_o bring_v they_o water_n and_o necessary_a thing_n but_o they_o do_v not_o come_v to_o bed_v to_o they_o now_o say_v luther_n only_o the_o behold_n of_o this_o brasen-serpent_n by_o the_o eye_n of_o faith_n that_o do_v cure_v the_o soul_n as_o to_o the_o point_n of_o justification_n when_o abraham_n go_v up_o into_o the_o mountain_n to_o offer_v up_o his_o son_n he_o speak_v to_o his_o servant_n to_o stay_v below_o 22.5_o gen._n 22.5_o stay_v you_o here_o till_o i_o come_v again_o at_o the_o foot_n and_o the_o bottom_n of_o this_o hill_n and_o so_o they_o do_v servants_z he_o have_v but_o they_o stay_v below_o and_o so_o when_o a_o man_n go_v up_o into_o this_o hill_n of_o justification_n this_o high_a mountain_n he_o take_v only_o his_o faith_n with_o he_o and_o he_o say_v unto_o all_o his_o work_n and_o unto_o all_o his_o duty_n stay_v you_o below_o at_o the_o bottom_n of_o the_o hill_n and_o there_o they_o attend_v so_o that_o faith_n justify_v faith_n though_o it_o have_v always_o work_n yet_o they_o come_v not_o into_o this_o matter_n of_o justification_n it_o be_v faith_n alone_o that_o justify_v this_o by_o way_n of_o explication_n quest_n 2_o but_o second_o you_o will_v say_v how_o may_v it_o appear_v now_o that_o this_o free-justification_n of_o a_o poor_a sinner_n by_o faith_n alone_o be_v man_n seek_v justification_n by_o his_o own_o do_v &_o work_v he_o live_v in_o himself_o therefore_o say_v the_o apostle_n 3.9_o phil._n 3.9_o i_o desire_v not_o to_o be_v find_v in_o my_o own_o righteousness_n to_o be_v find_v in_o it_o hope_n be_v the_o spring_n of_o action_n the_o ploughman_n plough_n in_o hope_n &_o he_o sow_v in_o hope_n hope_n be_v the_o spring_n of_o action_n now_o if_o a_o man_n seek_v to_o be_v justify_v by_o the_o law_n or_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n there_o be_v no_o hope_n for_o all_o work_n be_v imperfect_a and_o if_o no_o hope_n say_v the_o soul_n why_o shall_v i_o work_v as_o good_a never_o a_o whit_n as_o never_o the_o better_a that_o can_v be_v the_o principle_n of_o our_o grace_n and_o holiness_n which_o can_v neither_o convert_v a_o man_n nor_o mortify_v his_o sin_n nor_o quicken_v one_o to_o what_o be_v good_a nor_o comfort_n or_o free_v he_o from_o temptation_n now_o i_o pray_v what_o be_v it_o that_o convert_v a_o soul_n to_o christ_n be_v it_o the_o law_n or_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o law_n nay_o 16.9_o joh._n 16.9_o say_v our_o saviour_n i_o will_v send_v the_o comforter_n and_o he_o shall_v convince_v the_o world_n of_o sin_n but_o where_o do_v i_o receive_v the_o spirit_n say_v the_o apostle_n in_o the_o next_o chapter_n the_o 3._o of_o the_o galatian_n o_o you_o foolish_a galatian_n this_o will_v i_o know_v of_o you_o receive_v you_o the_o spirit_n by_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o law_n or_o by_o the_o hear_n of_o faith_n not_o by_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o law_n and_o as_o for_o mortification_n of_o sin_n can_v the_o law_n do_v that_o nay_o say_v the_o apostle_n in_o the_o 8._o of_o the_o roman_n the_o law_n be_v weak_a what_o the_o law_n can_v not_o do_v be_v weak_a god_n send_v his_o own_o son_n to_o condemn_v sin_n in_o the_o flesh_n so_o that_o the_o law_n can_v mortify_v sin_n the_o law_n can_v do_v it_o and_o as_o for_o our_o quicken_a unto_o what_o be_v good_a can_v the_o law_n ministraction_n of_o death_n quicken_v we_o unto_o what_o be_v good_a certain_o it_o can_v and_o as_o for_o our_o temptation_n and_o freedom_n from_o they_o do_v the_o law_n do_v that_o you_o know_v in_o hive_n at_o home_n or_o tree_n abroad_o but_o he_o find_v honey-comb_n in_o the_o body_n of_o the_o dead_a lion_n so_o do_v a_o poor_a tempt_v soul_n find_v all_o the_o honey-comb_n of_o comfort_n in_o the_o body_n of_o the_o dead_a lion_n of_o the_o tribe_n of_o judah_n not_o in_o his_o own_o hive_n i_o have_v read_v of_o a_o certain_a man_n that_o be_v much_o in_o prayer_n fast_v and_o read_v and_o the_o devil_n come_v to_o he_o and_o tell_v he_o friend_n why_o do_v thou_o pray_v so_o much_o and_o read_v so_o much_o and_o fast_o so_o much_o it_o be_v all_o to_o n_o purpose_n for_o thou_o shall_v go_v to_o hell_n at_o the_o last_o thou_o shall_v never_o go_v to_o heaven_n say_v he_o as_o for_o that_o i_o leave_v that_o to_o god_n it_o be_v not_o my_o question_n whether_o i_o shall_v go_v to_o heaven_n or_o hell_n but_o my_o question_n be_v how_o shall_v i_o serve_v god_n
of_o faith_n and_o after_o once_o i_o understand_v this_o doctrine_n of_o free-remission_n and_o justification_n by_o faith_n alone_o than_o i_o love_v repentance_n as_o for_o the_o mortification_n of_o sin_n you_o know_v what_o the_o apostle_n say_v let_v not_o sin_n reign_v in_o your_o mortal_a body_n 14._o rom._n 6.12_o &_o 14._o or_o have_v dominion_n over_o you_o why_o for_o you_o be_v not_o under_o the_o law_n but_o under_o grace_n so_o then_o it_o be_v be_v under_o grace_n that_o do_v mortify_v sin_n and_o as_o for_o the_o matter_n of_o obedience_n you_o know_v what_o the_o psalmist_n say_v there_o be_v mercy_n with_o thou_o o_o lord_n 4_o psal_n 130_o 4_o that_o thou_o may_v be_v fear_v that_o be_v that_o thou_o may_v be_v serve_v that_o thou_o may_v be_v obey_v so_o that_o obedience_n also_o come_v from_o the_o sight_n of_o mercy_n and_o of_o free-remission_n now_o if_o free-remission_n and_o the_o sense_n thereof_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o our_o holiness_n then_o sure_o justification_n by_o faith_n alone_o can_v be_v no_o enemy_n but_o must_v needs_o be_v a_o real_a friend_n unto_o all_o our_o spiritual_a life_n object_n but_o by_o way_n of_o objection_n it_o will_v be_v say_v in_o the_o three_o place_n this_o doctrine_n of_o free-remission_n and_o justification_n by_o faith_n alone_o seem_v to_o carry_v somewhat_o with_o it_o that_o be_v opposite_a unto_o grace_n and_o holiness_n for_o the_o more_o a_o man_n be_v bind_v unto_o the_o law_n and_o take_v himself_o to_o be_v so_o the_o more_o obedient_a he_o will_v be_v to_o the_o law_n but_o now_o a_o man_n never_o take_v himself_o more_o to_o be_v bind_v unto_o the_o law_n than_o when_o he_o seek_v to_o be_v justify_v by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n and_o so_o he_o will_v be_v most_o obedient_a answ_n for_o answer_v you_o must_v know_v that_o the_o word_n law_n in_o the_o new_a testament_n be_v take_v two_o way_n either_o it_o be_v take_v for_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n thus_o if_o you_o keep_v the_o ten_o commandment_n perfect_o you_o shall_v live_v for_o ever_o this_o be_v the_o covenant_n of_o work_n sometime_o the_o law_n be_v take_v for_o the_o ten_o commandment_n the_o rule_n of_o man_n life_n in_o the_o first_o sense_n a_o christian_n be_v dead_a unto_o the_o law_n and_o be_v free_v from_o it_o but_o in_o the_o second_o sense_n a_o believer_n a_o justify_v person_n be_v more_o bind_v to_o the_o law_n to_o observe_v it_o as_o a_o rule_n of_o life_n than_o ever_o he_o be_v only_o you_o must_v know_v there_o be_v a_o twofold_a bond_n there_o be_v the_o bond_n of_o love_n and_o there_o be_v the_o bond_n of_o fear_n as_o there_o be_v the_o law_n of_o love_n and_o the_o law_n of_o fear_n love_n and_o the_o bond_n of_o love_n be_v strong_a than_o fear_n and_o the_o bond_n of_o fear_n for_o fear_n be_v servant_n to_o love_n fear_n be_v the_o hand_n maid_n to_o love_n for_o you_o never_o fear_v the_o lose_n of_o any_o good_a thing_n but_o what_o you_o first_o love_n fear_n be_v the_o servant_n to_o love_n and_o therefore_o love_n be_v strong_a than_o fear_n and_o the_o bond_n of_o love_n strong_a than_o the_o bond_n of_o fear_n now_o though_o a_o justify_v obedient_a as_o the_o bond_n of_o love_n be_v strong_a than_o the_o bond_n of_o fear_n a_o man_n must_v needs_o be_v obedient_a unto_o christ_n that_o take_v himself_o to_o be_v none_o of_o his_o own_o but_o christ_n therefore_o say_v the_o apostle_n 6.20_o 1_o cor._n 6.20_o glorify_v christ_n with_o your_o body_n because_o you_o be_v buy_v with_o a_o price_n and_o because_o you_o be_v go_n so_o long_o as_o a_o man_n seek_v to_o be_v justify_v by_o work_n and_o by_o the_o law_n so_o long_o he_o look_v upon_o himself_o as_o his_o own_o but_o when_o a_o man_n see_v that_o he_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n alone_o than_o he_o look_v upon_o himself_o as_o christ_n that_o he_o be_v not_o his_o own_o and_o so_o he_o be_v more_o obedient_a unto_o christ_n than_o ever_o be_v be_v before_o object_n 2_o second_o if_o this_o be_v such_o a_o principle_n of_o grace_n and_o holiness_n how_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o man_n sin_v the_o more_o as_o they_o hear_v more_o of_o this_o free-remission_n and_o justification_n of_o a_o poor_a sinner_n by_o faith_n alone_o oh_o say_v one_o god_n be_v merciful_a and_o gracious_a and_o therefore_o i_o will_v now_o live_v as_o i_o listen_v and_o repent_v afterward_o if_o this_o doctrine_n this_o truth_n and_o this_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v the_o principle_n of_o all_o our_o holiness_n how_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o man_n sin_v more_o hereby_o answ_n i_o pray_v how_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v if_o that_o water_n do_v cleanse_v that_o it_o do_v not_o cleanse_v the_o blackmore_n and_o if_o fire_n do_v warm_a how_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o it_o do_v not_o put_v heat_n into_o the_o dead_a man_n and_o if_o the_o sun_n do_v enlighten_v how_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v it_o do_v not_o enlighten_v those_o that_o be_v blind_a i_o may_v ask_v you_o the_o reason_n likewise_o but_o i_o will_v tell_v you_o the_o reason_n the_o reason_n of_o this_o be_v because_o man_n be_v contrary_a unto_o god_n and_o all_o that_o do_v make_v this_o use_n &_o application_n of_o the_o lord_n mercy_n and_o grace_n they_o be_v contrary_a unto_o god_n for_o god_n work_v good_a out_o of_o evil_n now_o a_o wicked_a man_n be_v contrary_a unto_o god_n he_o work_v evil_a out_o of_o good_a god_n work_v the_o great_a good_a grace_n out_o of_o the_o great_a evil_a sin_n a_o wicked_a man_n he_o work_v the_o great_a evil_n sin_n out_o of_o the_o great_a good_a god_n love_n and_o grace_n why_o because_o he_o be_v contrary_a to_o god_n but_o now_o take_v this_o truth_n and_o this_o grace_n of_o god_n as_o it_o be_v in_o itself_o and_o so_o it_o be_v a_o very_a real_a friend_n unto_o all_o our_o grace_n and_o holiness_n quest_n 4_o but_o in_o the_o four_o place_n you_o will_v say_v then_o what_o be_v there_o in_o this_o justification_n by_o faith_n alone_o or_o free-remission_n that_o do_v advance_v our_o holiness_n how_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v what_o be_v there_o in_o this_o that_o have_v such_o a_o influence_n upon_o our_o life_n to_o the_o godly_a and_o then_o the_o argument_n will_v lie_v thus_o if_o the_o essential_a property_n of_o all_o these_o life_n be_v in_o a_o spiritual_a way_n in_o every_o godly_a man_n then_o certain_o every_o godly_a gracious_a man_n be_v a_o live_a man_n and_o in_o the_o state_n of_o life_n live_v another_o life_n from_o the_o life_n of_o the_o world_n first_o take_v the_o life_n of_o plant_n and_o herb_n or_o of_o flower_n and_o what_o be_v the_o essential_a property_n of_o
godliness_n but_o you_o know_v a_o spark_n of_o fire_n though_o it_o be_v but_o a_o spark_n of_o fire_n it_o will_v not_o oppose_v the_o flame_n though_o it_o be_v not_o so_o great_a as_o the_o flame_n yet_o it_o will_v not_o oppose_v the_o flame_n it_o oppose_v the_o water_n but_o it_o do_v not_o oppose_v the_o flame_n of_o fire_n and_o so_o if_o a_o man_n have_v grace_n though_o it_o be_v but_o a_o spark_n of_o grace_n yet_o notwithstanding_o if_o it_o be_v in_o truth_n it_o will_v not_o oppose_v a_o flame_n but_o now_o civil_a and_o moral_a man_n that_o walk_v in_o a_o way_n of_o work_n and_o be_v under_o the_o law_n oh_o how_o do_v they_o oppose_v those_o that_o have_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n that_o have_v more_o grace_n than_o themselves_o that_o be_v in_o a_o flame_n for_o christ_n they_o they_o oppose_v be_v it_o so_o with_o you_o that_o make_v this_o objection_n oh_o no_o i_o praise_v the_o lord_n your_o soul_n will_v say_v if_o it_o speak_v in_o truth_n though_o i_o have_v but_o little_a the_o lord_n know_v i_o do_v not_o oppose_v they_o that_o have_v much_o i_o rejoice_v rather_o in_o those_o that_o have_v more_o than_o myself_o yea_o i_o rejoice_v fountain_n free-remission_n and_o justification_n by_o faith_n alone_o object_n 3_o three_o will_v some_o say_v i_o fear_v that_o upon_o all_o this_o account_n my_o obedience_n and_o my_o holiness_n be_v not_o right_a for_o i_o do_v not_o find_v the_o visible_a character_n of_o justification_n upon_o my_o sanctification_n justification_n by_o faith_n alone_o be_v the_o fountain_n of_o all_o our_o holiness_n then_o if_o my_o obedience_n be_v right_a it_o will_v taste_v of_o my_o justification_n and_o of_o free-remission_n if_o my_o holiness_n be_v right_a it_o will_v savour_v of_o free-remission_n but_o i_o do_v not_o find_v any_o visible_a character_n of_o justification_n upon_o my_o sanctification_n i_o do_v not_o find_v that_o my_o sanctification_n do_v relish_v or_o savour_n of_o free-remission_n or_o justification_n by_o faith_n alone_o &_o therefore_o i_o fear_v all_o be_v naught_o my_o obedience_n have_v be_v naught_o and_o wrong_v all_o this_o while_n answ_n for_o answer_v to_o this_o know_v you_o not_o belove_v that_o a_o man_n justification_n may_v be_v hide_v from_o sense_n when_o sanctification_n be_v in_o truth_n know_v you_o not_o that_o the_o justification_n which_o be_v engrave_v upon_o a_o man_n sanctification_n so_o that_o when_o a_o man_n do_v see_v they_o he_o may_v say_v sure_o here_o be_v a_o sanctification_n that_o be_v no_o other_o than_o that_o which_o flow_v from_o free-remission_n and_o justification_n by_o faith_n along_o answ_n 1_o first_o when_o a_o man_n do_v mourn_v for_o his_o sin_n because_o it_o be_v pardon_v another_o now_o they_o be_v not_o whereas_o before_o a_o man_n be_v justify_v he_o can_v not_o rejoice_v in_o god_n but_o it_o hinder_v his_o mourning_n for_o sin_n and_o he_o can_v not_o mourn_v for_o sin_n but_o it_o hinder_v his_o faith_n and_o he_o can_v not_o believe_v but_o his_o believe_a hinder_v his_o repentance_n but_o now_o when_o a_o man_n be_v justify_v and_o reconcile_v to_o the_o lord_n than_o all_o those_o work_n duty_n and_o grace_n be_v reconcile_v to_o one_o another_o why_o because_o the_o attribute_n of_o god_n be_v reconcile_v unto_o one_o another_o and_o all_o the_o attribute_n of_o god_n they_o meet_v upon_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o justify_v person_n and_o so_o there_o be_v the_o character_n of_o his_o justification_n upon_o his_o sanctification_n here_o
