truth_n that_o after_o a_o man_n by_o sin_n have_v once_o make_v a_o forfeiture_n of_o all_o to_o god_n whatever_o good_a he_o after_o receive_v from_o he_o must_v needs_o be_v of_o grace_n which_o make_v st._n paul_n say_v all_o have_v sin_v and_o come_v short_a of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n be_v justify_v free_o by_o his_o grace_n and_o that_o too_o through_o the_o redemption_n which_o be_v in_o christ_n jesus_n rom._n 3.23.24_o these_o word_n of_o david_n then_o in_o verse_n 6_o 7._o seem_v to_o be_v
allege_v by_o st._n paul_n by_o way_n of_o confirmation_n of_o his_o aforesaid_a doctrine_n and_o to_o prove_v out_o of_o one_o of_o the_o sacred_a book_n own_v by_o his_o adversary_n that_o their_o worthy_a ancestor_n such_o as_o david_n who_o they_o can_v not_o deny_v to_o be_v justify_v man_n acknowledge_v themselves_o sinner_n such_o as_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o pardon_n and_o such_o as_o count_v it_o their_o great_a happiness_n to_o be_v pardon_v and_o that_o therefore_o they_o can_v not_o be_v look_v upon_o as_o receive_v the_o reward_n of_o debt_n but_o of_o grace_n for_o when_o opposition_n to_o his_o adversary_n conceit_n and_o opinion_n touch_v the_o reward_n be_v reckon_v of_o debt_n and_o not_o of_o grace_n and_o indeed_o how_o can_v st._n paul_n think_v better_a to_o convince_v they_o of_o their_o error_n and_o to_o shame_v they_o out_o of_o their_o conceit_n of_o merit_v the_o reward_n by_o observe_v the_o law_n of_o moses_n then_o by_o show_v they_o that_o their_o famous_a ancestor_n who_o observe_v the_o law_n of_o moses_n as_o well_o as_o any_o be_v yet_o so_o far_o from_o claim_v the_o reward_n of_o their_o obedience_n as_o a_o debt_n by_o way_n of_o merit_n that_o they_o acknowledge_v themselves_o sinner_n and_o therefore_o undeserving_a and_o count_v it_o their_o great_a felicity_n to_o be_v pardon_v through_o the_o great_a mercy_n and_o be_v circumcise_a and_o the_o like_a and_o that_o he_o mean_v such_o a_o one_o by_o he_o that_o work_v not_o and_o yet_o may_v be_v righteous_a appear_v by_o the_o instance_n he_o give_v in_o abraham_n case_n who_o be_v righteous_a with_o the_o righteousness_n of_o faith_n before_o ever_o he_o be_v circumcise_a verse_n 9_o 10._o 2._o it_o be_v describe_v by_o the_o nature_n and_o property_n of_o that_o faith_n which_o be_v the_o christian_n righteousness_n it_o be_v a_o believe_v in_o he_o that_o justifi_v the_o ungodly_a upon_o his_o repentance_n and_o belief_n in_o the_o ungodly_a and_o upon_o that_o account_n can_v merit_v it_o now_o than_o if_o the_o righteousness_n itself_o which_o be_v reward_v be_v of_o grace_n than_o the_o reward_n of_o that_o righteousness_n must_v needs_o be_v of_o grace_n this_o we_o see_v be_v one_o way_n by_o which_o st._n paul_n make_v out_o the_o reward_n to_o be_v of_o grace_n and_o not_o of_o debt_n second_o the_o other_o way_n be_v from_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o reward_n of_o that_o righteousness_n and_o this_o i_o call_v another_o way_n of_o prove_v the_o reward_n to_o be_v of_o grace_n and_o not_o of_o debt_n for_o when_o st._n paul_n say_v verse_n 6._o even_o as_o david_n also_o describe_v etc._n etc._n that_o word_n also_o seem_v to_o signify_v a_o addition_n of_o proof_n of_o his_o assertion_n by_o another_o medium_n and_o this_o medium_n be_v take_v from_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o reward_n of_o that_o righteousness_n which_o god_n impute_v to_o man_n in_o justify_v they_o as_o his_o former_a be_v from_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o righteousness_n itself_o and_o the_o apostle_n argument_n or_o proof_n be_v to_o this_o effect_n the_o reward_n of_o that_o righteousness_n by_o which_o god_n justify_v man_n must_v needs_o be_v of_o grace_n and_o not_o of_o debt_n because_o in_o great_a part_n it_o consist_v in_o remission_n of_o sin_n and_o remission_n of_o sin_n be_v a_o act_n of_o grace_n in_o the_o natural_a notion_n of_o it_o and_o in_o the_o common_a sense_n of_o mankind_n and_o that_o st._n paul_n design_n in_o allege_v this_o say_n of_o david_n be_v not_o to_o show_v that_o remission_n of_o sin_n be_v the_o righteousness_n by_o which_o man_n be_v justify_v but_o the_o reward_n of_o it_o appear_v by_o the_o very_a tenor_n and_o purport_n of_o his_o word_n for_o he_o do_v not_o say_v that_o david_n describe_v the_o righteousness_n or_o justification_n of_o the_o man_n to_o who_o god_n impute_v righteousness_n as_o we_o have_v cause_n to_o think_v he_o will_v have_v do_v if_o he_o have_v know_v or_o think_v that_o remission_n of_o sin_n have_v be_v man_n righteousness_n or_o justification_n but_o he_o say_v he_o describe_v the_o blessedness_n of_o that_o man_n to_o who_o god_n impute_v righteousness_n now_o what_o do_v blessedness_n in_o scripture_n import_n when_o apply_v to_o man_n but_o some_o happiness_n vouchsafe_v they_o as_o a_o effect_n of_o god_n grace_n yet_o so_o as_o by_o way_n of_o reward_n also_o of_o the_o performance_n of_o their_o duty_n thus_o bless_a be_v the_o man_n that_o fear_v the_o lord_n bless_a be_v they_o that_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o keep_v it_o bless_a be_v they_o that_o do_v his_o commandment_n that_o they_o may_v have_v right_a to_o the_o tree_n of_o life_n and_o the_o like_a so_o here_o the_o blessedness_n of_o that_o man_n to_o who_o god_n impute_v faith_n for_o righteousness_n seem_v to_o signify_v the_o happiness_n that_o do_v accrue_v to_o such_o a_o man_n as_o a_o reward_n of_o that_o faith_n which_o be_v impute_v for_o righteousness_n or_o of_o that_o righteousness_n which_o be_v impute_v and_o the_o happiness_n here_o specify_v which_o do_v accrue_v to_o such_o a_o man_n be_v the_o have_v his_o sin_n pardon_v now_o to_o understand_v st._n paul_n here_o in_o this_o sense_n do_v full_o agree_v with_o his_o scope_n and_o design_n in_o hand_n which_o be_v to_o prove_v the_o reward_n to_o be_v of_o grace_n and_o not_o of_o debt_n after_o he_o have_v oppose_v the_o righteousness_n of_o faith_n to_o the_o pharisaical_a jew_n righteousness_n by_o work_n of_o the_o law_n then_o he_o show_v the_o reward_n of_o this_o righteousness_n to_o be_v of_o grace_n and_o not_o of_o debt_n because_o it_o stand_v in_o remission_n of_o sin_n and_o whereas_o he_o do_v not_o use_v the_o word_n reward_v here_o but_o the_o word_n blessedness_n which_o yet_o signify_v the_o same_o thing_n it_o be_v probable_o but_o to_o accommodate_v his_o speech_n to_o david_n dialect_n who_o word_n he_o recite_v and_o as_o the_o sense_n i_o have_v insist_v on_o correspond_v full_o with_o the_o apostle_n scope_n and_o design_n here_o so_o it_o do_v also_o with_o the_o tenor_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o the_o scripture_n elsewhere_o which_o promise_n pardon_v of_o sin_n on_o condition_n of_o that_o faith_n which_o be_v impute_v for_o righteousness_n as_o a_o reward_n of_o it_o and_o motive_n to_o it_o and_o if_o this_o sense_n now_o represent_v be_v the_o sense_n of_o st._n paul_n in_o these_o verse_n or_o much_o what_o the_o same_o and_o you_o see_v what_o reason_n there_o be_v to_o think_v it_o be_v than_o his_o intent_n here_o be_v not_o to_o show_v that_o we_o be_v justify_v by_o be_v pardon_v he_o do_v not_o say_v it_o be_v pardon_n of_o sin_n which_o be_v impute_v for_o righteousness_n but_o faith_n nor_o do_v he_o say_v that_o david_n describe_v the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o justify_v man_n in_o say_v bless_a be_v they_o who_o iniquity_n be_v forgive_v but_o the_o blessedness_n of_o that_o man_n or_o the_o reward_n of_o his_o
righteousness_n and_o by_o this_o time_n i_o be_o think_v much_o more_o need_v not_o be_v say_v touch_v the_o difference_n between_o justification_n and_o remission_n of_o sin_n nor_o to_o show_v that_o justification_n do_v not_o stand_v only_o in_o remission_n of_o sin_n for_o whatever_o be_v the_o right_n in_o this_o matter_n there_o be_v the_o less_o need_n of_o contend_v about_o it_o since_o those_o who_o place_n justification_n in_o remission_n of_o sin_n do_v hold_v a_o effectual_a operative_a faith_n the_o necessary_a condition_n of_o obtain_v it_o as_o well_o as_o they_o do_v who_o place_n justification_n in_o the_o righteousness_n of_o faith_n the_o one_o place_v the_o matter_n of_o our_o justification_n in_o the_o performance_n of_o the_o same_o condition_n necessary_a to_o justification_n upon_o which_o performance_n the_o great_a stress_n be_v to_o be_v lay_v in_o this_o matter_n because_o those_o who_o perform_v the_o condition_n of_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n shall_v be_v sure_a to_o be_v justify_v whether_o their_o judgement_n about_o the_o nature_n of_o justification_n be_v right_a or_o no_o whereas_o without_o this_o performance_n they_o can_v though_o their_o notion_n of_o the_o nature_n of_o justification_n shall_v be_v never_o so_o orthodox_n and_o sound_n but_o although_o the_o difference_n seem_v to_o be_v of_o no_o great_a moment_n yet_o in_o as_o much_o as_o there_o be_v divine_a wisdom_n in_o fit_a mean_n to_o end_n and_o in_o appoint_v such_o or_o such_o a_o thing_n to_o such_o a_o use_n and_o not_o to_o another_o or_o rather_o than_o to_o another_o and_o that_o those_o which_o he_o have_v pitch_v upon_o be_v in_o some_o respect_n or_o other_o better_a for_o the_o purpose_n than_o any_o we_o can_v substitute_v in_o their_o room_n it_o follow_v then_o that_o if_o god_n have_v place_v the_o matter_n of_o our_o justification_n in_o the_o righteousness_n which_o be_v by_o faith_n rather_o than_o in_o remission_n of_o sin_n that_o then_o we_o shall_v not_o confine_v it_o to_o remission_n of_o sin_n only_o and_o to_o speak_v plain_o i_o can_v think_v it_o a_o matter_n of_o such_o indifferency_n whether_o we_o hold_v remission_n of_o sin_n our_o only_a justification_n or_o god_n adjudge_v we_o righteous_a upon_o the_o account_n of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o faith_n but_o that_o it_o be_v well_o worthy_a our_o best_a endeavour_n to_o find_v out_o which_o of_o these_o opinion_n have_v the_o holy_a scripture_n on_o its_o side_n if_o it_o be_v but_o for_o this_o reason_n if_o there_o be_v no_o more_o 1._o the_o notion_n of_o justification_n by_o the_o righteousness_n of_o faith_n be_v a_o more_o ready_a and_o more_o effectual_a way_n to_o detect_v the_o opinion_n of_o error_n and_o mistake_n which_o place_v justification_n in_o the_o imputation_n of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n to_o we_o in_o itself_o and_o not_o only_o in_o its_o effect_n than_o the_o notion_n of_o justification_n by_o remission_n of_o sin_n be_v for_o so_o long_o as_o the_o scripture_n do_v so_o plentiful_o and_o express_o testify_v as_o it_o do_v that_o it_o be_v a_o righteousness_n by_o which_o we_o be_v justify_v it_o be_v nothing_o so_o easy_a to_o satisfy_v the_o reason_n of_o man_n mind_n either_o from_o the_o scripture_n or_o from_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n itself_o why_o remission_n of_o sin_n shall_v be_v style_v our_o righteousness_n rather_o than_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n impute_v to_o we_o as_o it_o be_v to_o convince_v they_o that_o neither_o the_o one_o nor_o the_o other_o be_v in_o scripture_n style_v our_o righteousness_n in_o their_o sense_n but_o that_o it_o be_v the_o righteousness_n of_o faith_n that_o be_v so_o style_v there_o while_o the_o question_n be_v only_o which_o be_v count_v to_o we_o for_o righteousness_n whether_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n impute_v in_o the_o sense_n usual_o oppose_v or_o remission_n of_o sin_n the_o competition_n be_v nothing_o so_o unequal_a in_o respect_n of_o evidence_n from_o scripture_n and_o from_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n as_o it_o be_v when_o the_o question_n be_v whether_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n impute_v or_o the_o righteousness_n of_o faith_n by_o virtue_n of_o his_o righteousness_n be_v count_v to_o we_o for_o righteousness_n because_o the_o scripture_n be_v express_v for_o this_o but_o not_o for_o either_o of_o the_o other_o let_v this_o then_o be_v but_o once_o well_o prove_v that_o it_o be_v faith_n itself_o as_o the_o principle_n of_o evangelical_n righteousness_n that_o be_v the_o thing_n which_o be_v impute_v to_o we_o for_o righteousness_n and_o that_o it_o be_v by_o it_o that_o god_n justify_v we_o and_o the_o opinion_n of_o be_v justify_v by_o the_o imputation_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n in_o the_o sense_n usual_o impugn_a will_v soon_o fall_v to_o the_o ground_n if_o the_o former_a notion_n be_v but_o well_o seat_v in_o the_o mind_n the_o late_a will_n of_o itself_o fall_v out_o of_o it_o consider_v then_o the_o dubiousness_n of_o both_o the_o foresay_a opinion_n there_o be_v the_o less_o reason_n to_o wonder_v that_o the_o controversy_n shall_v continue_v so_o long_o as_o it_o have_v do_v between_o those_o who_o place_n justification_n in_o the_o imputation_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n and_o those_o who_o place_n it_o only_o in_o remission_n of_o sin_n for_o although_o the_o reason_n be_v as_o i_o think_v unanswerable_a which_o the_o one_o use_v against_o place_v justification_n in_o the_o imputation_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n in_o the_o sense_n in_o which_o they_o oppose_v it_o yet_o while_o their_o arguing_n have_v not_o perhaps_o be_v so_o irrefragable_a for_o place_v it_o in_o remission_n of_o sin_n it_o have_v doubtless_o make_v the_o other_o the_o more_o tenacious_a in_o their_o opinion_n unless_o they_o can_v see_v better_a ground_n for_o that_o opinion_n which_o have_v be_v offer_v they_o in_o exchange_n for_o they_o than_o have_v be_v tender_v they_o whereas_o have_v justification_n be_v place_v in_o the_o righteousness_n of_o faith_n and_o sincerity_n instead_o of_o be_v place_v in_o remission_n of_o sin_n and_o have_v those_o scripture_n be_v due_o open_v and_o apply_v by_o which_o it_o may_v with_o great_a strength_n and_o clear_a evidence_n be_v prove_v that_o it_o be_v faith_n or_o the_o obedience_n of_o faith_n which_o be_v impute_v to_o we_o for_o righteousness_n and_o by_o which_o we_o be_v justify_v by_o god_n the_o controversy_n will_v have_v be_v manage_v with_o great_a advantage_n for_o the_o convince_a of_o those_o of_o opposite_a opinion_n than_o it_o have_v be_v by_o assert_v that_o we_o be_v justify_v by_o be_v pardon_v and_o will_v soon_o have_v incline_v they_o in_o all_o probability_n to_o have_v exchange_v their_o own_o notion_n of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o justification_n for_o this_o and_o the_o reason_n hereof_o be_v this_o because_o the_o scripture_n be_v express_v and_o plain_a for_o this_o whereas_o so_o far_o as_o i_o can_v find_v there_o be_v no_o one_o text_n in_o all_o the_o bible_n that_o do_v express_o affirm_v that_o pardon_n of_o sin_n be_v our_o righteousness_n or_o that_o it_o be_v count_v to_o we_o for_o such_o no_o more_o than_o there_o be_v that_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n be_v in_o itself_o impute_v to_o we_o for_o righteousness_n and_o formal_o and_o not_o only_o virtual_o make_v we_o 2._o beside_o all_o this_o it_o be_v to_o be_v consider_v whether_o the_o doctrine_n touch_v the_o imputation_n of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o faith_n to_o justification_n do_v not_o tend_v more_o and_o more_o direct_o to_o work_v in_o man_n
