exposition_n of_o paul_n that_o a_o man_n be_v justify_v by_o faith_n only_o but_o i_o say_v that_o it_o come_v never_o into_o paul_n mind_n to_o affirm_v that_o faith_n which_o be_v without_o work_n do_v justify_v for_o so_o he_o shall_v indeed_o have_v be_v contrary_a to_o james_n but_o he_o attribute_v the_o power_n and_o praise_n of_o justification_n to_o a_o true_a and_o lively_a faith_n be_v exclude_v from_o many_o thing_n and_o be_v pen_v up_o in_o too_o narrow_a a_o room_n secondlye_o there_o remain_v yet_o something_o for_o which_o god_n may_v by_o wicked_a reason_n be_v accuse_v and_o find_v fault_n with_o for_o if_o god_n have_v foresee_v evil_a and_o not_o let_v it_o since_o it_o be_v in_o his_o power_n to_o do_v it_o they_o have_v he_o not_o do_v well_o insomuch_o as_o which_o no_o man_n in_o his_o right_a mind_n will_v say_v and_o if_o this_o be_v so_o indeed_o why_o do_v man_n strive_v so_o much_o about_o this_o matter_n and_o one_o so_o cruel_o rage_v against_o another_o verily_a because_o such_o be_v the_o curiosity_n of_o man_n brain_n and_o desire_v of_o knowledge_n that_o omit_v that_o which_o be_v especial_o to_o be_v regard_v they_o all_o for_o the_o most_o part_n entangle_v themselves_o in_o many_o and_o most_o difficult_a question_n and_o will_v enforce_v other_o to_o be_v of_o like_a mind_n with_o they_o in_o every_o thing_n and_o such_o also_o be_v the_o blockishness_n of_o many_o that_o be_v give_v to_o a_o number_n of_o ceremony_n they_o will_v drive_v and_o compel_v other_o to_o use_v and_o frequent_v the_o same_o and_o in_o the_o mean_a season_n that_o wedding_n garment_n be_v neglect_v which_o notwithstanding_o if_o so_o be_v we_o will_v feast_n with_o god_n and_o his_o angel_n and_o with_o all_o the_o holy_a saint_n in_o heaven_n be_v especial_o requisite_a and_o therefore_o all_o man_n have_v here_o wherein_o they_o may_v safe_o rest_v if_o they_o will_v and_o willing_a they_o ought_v to_o be_v if_o they_o think_v meet_v to_o stand_v to_o david_n testimony_n they_o have_v whereby_o hatred_n contention_n persecution_n fire_n and_o sword_n both_o between_o king_n and_o arm_a soldier_n and_o among_o learned_a man_n may_v and_o obscure_a we_o have_v regard_n of_o this_o place_n and_o time_n and_o omit_v the_o question_n which_o perhaps_o may_v be_v handle_v more_o fit_o in_o the_o school_n will_v allege_v only_o those_o thing_n that_o shall_v seem_v most_o profitable_a to_o the_o better_a information_n of_o life_n and_o frame_v of_o our_o manner_n to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n james_n in_o the_o first_o of_o sovereign_a good_a so_o great_o wish_v for_o of_o all_o for_o why_o faith_n alone_o give_v unto_o man_n perfect_a righteousness_n and_o therefore_o also_o eternal_a life_n if_o so_o be_v then_o james_n himself_o declare_v unto_o we_o in_o the_o three_o short_a verse_n follow_v yea_o the_o very_a interrogation_n whereby_o he_o propound_v the_o question_n seem_v to_o contain_v a_o secret_a answer_n unto_o it_o and_o to_o tell_v we_o what_o we_o ought_v to_o judge_v of_o this_o question_n for_o this_o the_o common_a course_n of_o question_v do_v prove_v for_o why_o if_o i_o shall_v say_v to_o some_o lewd_a and_o desperate_a knave_n profess_v christian_n religion_n with_o we_o in_o the_o use_n of_o the_o sacrament_n public_a prayer_n and_o sermon_n in_o this_o manner_n think_v thou_o that_o this_o outward_a profession_n of_o christian_a religion_n will_v do_v thou_o any_o good_a when_o as_o thou_o have_v a_o filthy_a and_o unclean_a hart_n be_v thou_o of_o a_o opinion_n that_o it_o will_v save_v thou_o it_o be_v even_o as_o much_o as_o if_o i_o deny_v it_o and_o say_v doubtless_o thou_o be_v not_o to_o look_v that_o this_o outward_a profession_n of_o thy_o mouth_n shall_v make_v thou_o become_v acceptable_a to_o god_n so_o when_o james_n say_v what_o profit_v it_o a_o man_n to_o say_v he_o have_v faith_n when_o he_o have_v no_o work_n that_o be_v live_v not_o by_o faith_n can_v this_o faith_n save_o he_o that_o so_o believe_v it_o be_v all_o one_o as_o if_o he_o flat_o deny_v it_o and_o if_o we_o take_v it_o thus_o then_o by_o the_o testimony_n and_o authority_n of_o james_n himself_o the_o question_n shall_v in_o this_o wise_a be_v determine_v and_o we_o be_v to_o hold_v that_o by_o faith_n without_o work_n no_o man_n can_v attain_v unto_o salvation_n and_o we_o must_v undoubted_o stand_v to_o the_o judgement_n of_o james_n as_o to_o that_o which_o proceed_v not_o from_o man_n but_o from_o god_n for_o albeit_o he_o be_v a_o man_n yet_o because_o he_o be_v the_o apostle_n of_o christ_n and_o inspire_v with_o the_o holyghost_n that_o speak_v this_o which_o also_o be_v agreeable_a with_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o divine_a oracle_n who_o but_o a_o unclean_a person_n will_v call_v this_o matter_n into_o question_n notwithstanding_o lest_o he_o may_v seem_v willing_a to_o convince_v and_o enforce_v we_o by_o his_o sole_a authority_n to_o believe_v it_o he_o add_v a_o reason_n by_o way_n of_o comparison_n whereby_o he_o so_o plain_o and_o manifestlye_o prove_v the_o thing_n to_o be_v so_o that_o now_o he_o lead_v we_o not_o only_o by_o his_o authority_n but_o also_o by_o force_n of_o reason_n whereunto_o they_o willing_o submit_v themselves_o that_o be_v partaker_n of_o reason_n as_o it_o be_v by_o the_o hand_n to_o the_o understanding_n of_o the_o question_n propound_v and_o his_o reason_n be_v this_o if_o some_o poor_a wretched_a man_n be_v here_o present_a destitute_a of_o all_o thing_n necessary_a naked_a and_o hungrye_a to_o who_o some_o scotfree_a and_o wealthy_a person_n will_v say_v with_o all_o gentleness_n go_v thy_o way_n hence_o i_o pray_v thou_o and_o take_v meat_n and_o warm_v thyself_o and_o yet_o give_v he_o nothing_o for_o to_o eat_v or_o whereby_o to_o warm_v himself_o though_o to_o outward_a appearance_n this_o speech_n of_o the_o rich_a man_n seem_v to_o be_v honest_a and_o kind_a to_o the_o poor_a yet_o what_o good_a do_v it_o to_o the_o poor_a creature_n that_o be_v like_a to_o starve_v for_o hunger_n and_o cold_a nay_o doubtless_o it_o be_v rather_o injurious_a and_o reproachful_a against_o he_o thou_o see_v a_o man_n destitute_a of_o all_o thing_n naked_a and_o hunger_n starve_v and_o thou_o saiste_v unto_o he_o go_v home_o take_v thy_o meat_n and_o warm_v thyself_o and_o yet_o thou_o know_v he_o to_o want_v all_o thing_n necessary_a as_o neither_o have_a house_n to_o go_v to_o nor_o meat_n to_o eat_v nor_o clothing_n to_o put_v on_o nor_o any_o thing_n to_o warm_v himself_o withal_o do_v thou_o not_o mock_v and_o deride_v his_o poverty_n do_v thou_o not_o alike_o as_o if_o thou_o upbraid_v he_o with_o his_o poor_a estate_n and_o misery_n even_o after_o the_o same_o manner_n say_v james_n stand_v the_o case_n when_o a_o man_n profess_v himself_o to_o believe_v in_o god_n the_o father_n almighty_a and_o in_o jesus_n christ_n his_o son_n for_o the_o speech_n be_v honest_a and_o good_a and_o in_o show_v godly_a but_o unless_o such_o a_o man_n love_n god_n with_o all_o his_o hart_n and_o serve_v he_o as_o his_o father_n and_o for_o his_o sake_n man_n also_o create_v after_o his_o own_o image_n and_o similitude_n so_o as_o he_o may_v labour_v to_o profit_v all_o and_o tohurt_a none_o this_o man_n external_a and_o outward_a confession_n of_o mouth_n shall_v neither_o be_v accept_v nor_o account_v off_o
of_o god_n but_o rather_o be_v injurious_a &_o contumelious_a against_o he_o he_o may_v cry_v as_o loud_a and_o as_o long_o as_o he_o will_v o_o god_n the_o father_n almighty_a i_o believe_v in_o thou_o and_o o_o christ_n jesu_n the_o son_n of_o the_o live_a god_n i_o beléene_o in_o thou_o when_o as_o yet_o he_o neither_o love_v god_n in_o good_a earnest_n nor_o man_n for_o god_n cause_n this_o belief_n as_o i_o may_v so_o call_v it_o shall_v profit_v he_o nothing_o at_o all_o say_v james._n for_o this_o faith_n that_o want_v work_n be_v dead_a say_v he_o for_o hereupon_o hang_v the_o force_n of_o james_n his_o argument_n that_o which_o be_v dead_a can_v give_v life_n but_o faith_n without_o work_n be_v dead_a therefore_o it_o can_v give_v life_n neither_o be_v it_o acceptable_a to_o god_n but_o rather_o reproachful_a unto_o he_o because_o it_o make_v a_o show_n as_o though_o it_o give_v honour_n unto_o god_n and_o yet_o give_v none_o but_o will_v have_v he_o to_o be_v content_v with_o the_o smoke_n of_o vain_a talk_n and_o profession_n when_o as_o he_o require_v the_o hart_n of_o man_n and_o not_o word_n this_o be_v if_o i_o be_v not_o deceive_v the_o true_a and_o proper_a exposition_n of_o this_o place_n whereby_o it_o appear_v as_o by_o many_o other_o also_o that_o there_o be_v a_o double_a or_o two_o fold_n faith_n of_o man_n the_o one_o which_o want_v and_o be_v without_o good_a work_v the_o other_o which_o flow_v and_o abound_v with_o they_o the_o former_a be_v say_v of_o james_n to_o be_v dead_a because_o it_o be_v barren_a and_o unprofitable_a but_o this_o for_o that_o it_o be_v effectual_a and_o painful_a be_v common_o call_v quick_a or_o lively_a the_o one_o consist_v either_o in_o a_o certain_a knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o in_o the_o only_a skill_n and_o contemplation_n of_o his_o divine_a mystery_n or_o else_o in_o some_o certain_a credulous_a and_o ignorant_a opinion_n whereby_o a_o man_n suppose_v himself_o to_o believe_v that_o which_o he_o understand_v not_o and_o the_o other_o rest_v itself_o as_o you_o will_v say_v content_v in_o a_o simple_a and_o sound_a knowledge_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n be_v whole_o conversant_a in_o action_n and_o occupy_v in_o well_o do_v the_o difference_n which_o be_v between_o both_o all_z or_o the_o great_a number_n be_v for_o the_o most_o part_n ignorant_a of_o neither_o do_v they_o pass_v much_o whither_o they_o know_v it_o or_o no_o because_o forsooth_o they_o covet_v to_o live_v to_o themselves_o rather_o than_o unto_o god_n and_o yet_o this_o difference_n not_o be_v know_v nor_o regard_v it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o very_o many_o in_o stead_n of_o the_o chief_a and_o sovereign_a good_a which_o they_o desire_v do_v fall_n into_o extreme_a misery_n and_o all_o because_o they_o think_v themselves_o to_o be_v endue_v with_o such_o a_o faith_n as_o whereby_o they_o may_v be_v save_v and_o so_o flatter_v themselves_o in_o it_o live_v in_o pleasure_n &_o delight_n where_o in_o very_a deed_n it_o be_v only_o a_o vain_a shadow_n of_o true_a faith_n and_o nothing_o else_o in_o regard_n whereof_o we_o be_v earnest_o to_o endever_n at_o this_o time_n that_o both_o we_o may_v understand_v this_o diversity_n and_o also_o embrace_v the_o true_a and_o lively_a faith_n if_o so_o be_v we_o desire_v to_o be_v save_v but_o thou_o will_v say_v who_o will_v think_v that_o ever_o there_o be_v any_o or_o there_o be_v some_o such_o in_o time_n past_a yet_o that_o there_o shall_v be_v any_o at_o this_o day_n so_o foolish_a and_o brutish_a to_o believe_v that_o he_o shall_v be_v save_v by_o such_o a_o faith_n yes_o very_o say_v i_o there_o both_o be_v some_o when_o the_o apostle_n write_v these_o thing_n for_o otherwise_o why_o shall_v he_o purposelye_o have_v handle_v this_o argument_n throughout_o this_o whole_a chapter_n yea_o throughout_o the_o whole_a epistle_n wherein_o he_o so_o great_o urge_v work_n and_o also_o that_o there_o be_v many_o in_o our_o time_n and_o perhaps_o also_o among_o we_o not_o a_o few_o the_o say_n of_o christ_n be_v as_o yet_o conversant_a on_o earth_n and_o speak_v of_o his_o last_o come_n to_o judgement_n may_v seem_v to_o be_v a_o proof_n when_o the_o son_n of_o man_n shall_v come_v suppose_v you_o that_o he_o shall_v find_v faith_n on_o the_o earth_n whereby_o he_o declare_v that_o in_o the_o latter_a day_n faith_n will_v be_v very_o rare_a and_o hard_o to_o find_v but_o if_o all_o that_o say_v they_o believe_v in_o god_n or_o in_o christ_n and_o profess_v it_o outwardlye_o in_o religion_n believe_v trulye_o and_o in_o deed_n than_o be_v there_o no_o small_a number_n of_o believer_n but_o a_o very_a great_a company_n it_o appear_v then_o that_o to_o the_o outward_a profession_n of_o faith_n something_o be_v require_v that_o it_o may_v be_v true_a and_o justify_v notwithstanding_o that_o this_o may_v the_o more_o cléerelye_o appear_v we_o will_v endever_n to_o declare_v it_o more_o at_o large_a the_o jew_n and_o turk_n do_v say_v that_o they_o believe_v in_o almighty_a god_n maker_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n governor_n and_o persevere_v of_o all_o thing_n yea_o all_o nation_n in_o a_o manner_n do_v believe_v and_o confess_v as_o much_o for_o a_o man_n shall_v find_v few_o that_o believe_v not_o in_o one_o god_n through_o those_o impression_n of_o knowledge_n which_o god_n have_v engrave_v in_o man_n mind_n and_o this_o faith_n be_v true_a as_o touch_v the_o sense_n and_o meanig_n of_o the_o word_n for_o god_n be_v in_o very_a deed_n almighty_a maker_n and_o preserver_n of_o all_o thing_n there_o faith_n then_o be_v in_o this_o respect_n not_o false_a no_o neither_o be_v their_o faith_n feign_v or_o counterfeit_v for_o because_o they_o believe_v even_o so_o as_o they_o speak_v neither_o do_v their_o mind_n disagree_v from_o their_o talk_n therefore_o their_o faith_n be_v not_o feign_v as_o though_o they_o speak_v one_o thing_n and_o beléeve_v a_o other_o or_o as_o though_o their_o tongue_n and_o hart_n agree_v not_o together_o nay_o their_o confession_n which_o they_o make_v of_o god_n be_v our_o confession_n for_o we_o confess_v in_o the_o apostle_n cré_v that_o we_o believe_v in_o god_n the_o father_n almighty_a maker_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n how_o fall_v it_o out_o then_o that_o if_o our_o faith_n be_v true_a they_o shall_v be_v false_a and_o feign_a shall_v not_o then_o this_o faith_n of_o they_o in_o god_n the_o father_n save_v they_o no_o say_v james_n for_o even_o the_o devil_n also_o believe_v and_o acknowledge_v that_o there_o be_v one_o god_n almighty_a maker_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n and_o yet_o for_o all_o that_o they_o be_v not_o justify_v neither_o be_v they_o apt_a to_o eternal_a life_n no_o more_o they_o also_o can_v our_o that_o confess_v christ_n shall_v be_v save_v but_o all_o christian_n in_o what_o place_n or_o of_o what_o sort_n soever_o they_o be_v whither_o they_o be_v romanistes_n or_o other_o for_o i_o dare_v not_o deny_v the_o name_n of_o christian_n to_o the_o romanistes_n since_o the_o learnede_a writer_n do_v confess_v the_o church_n of_o rome_n to_o be_v the_o church_n of_o god_n but_o yet_o a_o stray_a church_n all_o i_o say_v do_v with_o one_o mouth_n confess_v that_o they_o believe_v in_o christ_n the_o son_n of_o god_n who_o for_o the_o sin_n of_o man_n have_v take_v our_o nature_n upon_o he_o suffer_v die_v and_o rise_v again_o from_o the_o dead_a ascend_v into_o the_o heaven_n from_o whence_o also_o he_o shall_v come_v in_o the_o latter_a day_n to_o judge_v both_o the_o quick_a and_o demand_v of_o any_o whither_o do_v the_o sign_n that_o be_v here_o mention_v of_o christ_n follow_v thy_o faith_n do_v thou_o heal_v the_o sick_a do_v thou_o speak_v with_o new_a tongue_n what_o answer_n will_v he_o make_v here_o for_o the_o word_n of_o christ_n be_v plain_a these_o sign_n say_v he_o shall_v follow_v they_o that_o believe_v neither_o do_v christ_n lie_v neither_o will_v he_o be_v find_v false_a if_o thou_o beleve_v true_o and_o indeed_o these_o must_v follow_v thy_o faith_n but_o if_o not_o thou_o suppose_v thou_o beléeve_v in_o christ_n and_o yet_o do_v not_o believe_v here_o than_o thou_o see_v that_o virtue_n or_o power_n of_o faith_n which_o be_v the_o life_n or_o spirit_n of_o faith_n to_o be_v want_v in_o thou_o and_o therefore_o thy_o faith_n be_v dead_a but_o miracle_n be_v cease_v neither_o be_v they_o require_v any_o more_o thou_o say_v well_o those_o corporal_a miracle_n be_v cease_v either_o for_o man_n unbelief_n or_o for_o that_o they_o be_v appoint_v only_o to_o those_o first_o time_n of_o the_o church_n notwithstanding_o thy_o faith_n must_v not_o want_v virtue_n for_o if_o it_o do_v it_o be_v dead_a there_o be_v then_o even_o at_o other_o lust_n of_o the_o flesh_n which_o fight_v against_o the_o soul_n from_o the_o which_o if_o thou_o be_v once_o free_a thou_o shall_v afterward_o lay_v thy_o hand_n upon_o other_o and_o they_o shall_v be_v whole_a that_o be_v thou_o shall_v teach_v they_o the_o true_a knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o of_o christ_n and_o they_o shall_v be_v free_v from_o the_o error_n &_o vanity_n of_o this_o world_n they_o shall_v speak_v also_o with_o new_a tongue_n that_o be_v to_o say_v where_o before_o they_o be_v blasphemer_n and_o all_o their_o word_n vain_a and_o unprofitable_a nay_o hurtful_a and_o pestilent_a now_o as_o though_o they_o be_v endue_v with_o a_o new_a tongue_n they_o shall_v speak_v nothing_o which_o shall_v not_o be_v refer_v to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o the_o profit_n and_o salvation_n of_o man_n and_o this_o be_v to_o speak_v with_o new_a tongue_n and_o thus_o if_o we_o be_v dispose_v and_o affect_v although_o we_o shall_v drink_v any_o deadly_a thing_n yet_o shall_v we_o not_o be_v hurt_v by_o it_o for_o why_o neither_o shall_v the_o world_n nor_o the_o flesh_n with_o the_o lust_n thereof_o no_o nor_o satan_n himself_o rise_v up_o against_o we_o be_v ever_o able_a to_o thrust_v we_o down_o from_o this_o good_a and_o happy_a estate_n and_o all_o because_o we_o shall_v cleave_v fast_o unto_o god_n by_o this_o true_a and_o lively_a faith_n yea_o to_o say_v whither_o he_o cast_v these_o devil_n first_o out_n of_o himself_o and_o second_o out_o of_o other_o for_o except_o we_o do_v this_o we_o deceive_v ourselves_o and_o have_v not_o that_o faith_n indeed_o which_o may_v join_v and_o couple_v we_o with_o christ_n for_o why_o this_o power_n or_o virtue_n be_v of_o the_o nature_n and_o substance_n of_o true_a faith_n for_o with_o out_o this_o it_o be_v dead_a so_o that_o like_z as_o if_o the_o soul_n or_o spirit_n shall_v return_v again_o into_o a_o dead_a body_n that_o be_v go_v to_o the_o grave_n the_o same_o will_v immediate_o wax_v hot_a stir_v move_v and_o do_v all_o other_o humane_a action_n and_o man_n will_v marvel_v at_o so_o great_a a_o miracle_n even_o so_o likewise_o if_o that_o dead_a faith_n whereby_o a_o man_n profess_v himself_o to_o know_v god_n and_o christ_n have_v this_o new_a virtue_n adjoin_v to_o it_o the_o man_n shall_v begin_v forthwith_o to_o flame_n with_o a_o divine_a love_n and_o that_o so_o fervent_o that_o he_o shall_v frame_v himself_o whole_o to_o the_o obedience_n of_o god_n and_o shall_v choose_v rather_o that_o his_o will_n may_v be_v do_v in_o he_o and_o by_o he_o than_o his_o own_o he_o shall_v trust_v in_o he_o and_o stay_v whole_o upon_o he_o and_o if_o it_o be_v so_o that_o he_o must_v suffer_v even_o extreme_a torment_n pain_n for_o his_o glory_n sake_n that_o be_v either_o loss_n of_o good_n or_o honour_n or_o credit_n yea_o or_o life_n itself_o he_o shall_v willing_o and_o glad_o do_v it_o and_o as_o touch_v his_o neighbour_n by_o the_o name_n of_o neighbour_n that_o idle_a and_o unprofitable_a faith_n whereupon_o it_o follow_v that_o this_o see_v it_o be_v dead_a be_v the_o cause_n also_o of_o most_o lamentable_a death_n and_o mourning_n unto_o man_n and_o that_o lively_a faith_n justifi_v and_o save_v man_n because_o it_o be_v not_o dead_a but_o endue_v with_o exceed_a great_a force_n not_o such_o only_a as_o whereby_o it_o remove_v mountain_n or_o woork_v some_o miracle_n but_o whereby_o it_o love_v god_n sincerelye_o and_o his_o neighbour_n also_o for_o his_o sake_n whereof_o paul_n to_o conclude_v speak_v thus_o 1._o corinth_n 13_o though_o that_o we_o labour_v and_o endever_n that_o not_o be_v content_v nor_o decive_v with_o this_o we_o may_v embrace_v and_o hold_v fast_o that_o and_o use_v and_o exercise_v it_o as_o long_o as_o we_o live_v that_o when_o christ_n in_o the_o latter_a day_n shall_v give_v sentence_n of_o all_o man_n and_o of_o their_o faith_n and_o work_n we_o may_v hear_v he_o say_v
