a_o day_n and_o hear_v so_o many_o sermon_n in_o a_o week_n and_o turn_v to_o all_o the_o place_n of_o scripture_n that_o the_o minister_n have_v quote_v and_o fold_v down_o the_o leaf_n in_o your_o bible_n or_o else_o write_v their_o sermon_n after_o they_o and_o make_v some_o repetition_n thereof_o to_o other_o and_o the_o like_a i_o say_v have_v you_o not_o in_o so_o do_v rest_v satisfy_v without_o look_v for_o a_o return_n of_o your_o prayer_n or_o what_o good_a you_o have_v gain_v to_o your_o own_o soul_n by_o your_o hear_n and_o so_o whether_o you_o have_v meet_v with_o god_n in_o christ_n in_o all_o these_o way_n and_o mean_n i_o pray_v you_o answer_v i_o true_o from_o your_o heart_n sim._n believe_v i_o sir_n i_o must_v confess_v i_o have_v do_v so_o min._n then_o i_o beseech_v you_o take_v this_o as_o another_o evident_a sign_n of_o your_o rest_n and_o put_v confidence_n in_o your_o own_o performance_n for_o if_o a_o man_n do_v not_o put_v confidence_n therein_o than_o he_o make_v use_v of_o such_o performance_n but_o only_o as_o a_o bridge_n or_o ferry-boat_n to_o carry_v or_o waft_v he_o over_o to_o god_n in_o christ_n and_o rest_v not_o content_v till_o he_o be_v bring_v thither_o other_o sign_n i_o may_v lay_v down_o touch_v this_o matter_n but_o i_o hope_v these_o will_v be_v sufficient_a for_o you_o to_o try_v yourself_o by_o if_o the_o lord_n be_v please_v to_o make_v they_o effectual_a to_o you_o sim._n well_o sir_n and_o suppose_v that_o i_o shall_v thereby_o find_v that_o i_o have_v be_v guilty_a of_o rest_v and_o rely_v upon_o my_o own_o duty_n and_o performance_n and_o shall_v come_v before_o you_o and_o the_o elder_n and_o acknowledge_v the_o same_o will_v you_o thereupon_o conclude_v i_o to_o be_v but_o a_o formal_a legal_a professor_n without_o true_a faith_n in_o christ_n and_o therefore_o not_o fit_a to_o be_v admit_v to_o the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n min._n neighbour_n simon_n to_o the_o intent_n you_o may_v more_o clear_o see_v and_o perceive_v what_o we_o do_v when_o we_o meet_v together_o and_o also_o declare_v it_o unto_o other_o if_o you_o see_v occasion_n i_o pray_v you_o understand_v and_o take_v notice_n that_o if_o we_o upon_o examination_n find_v a_o man_n to_o be_v whole_o ignorant_a and_o whole_o sinful_a as_o you_o know_v i_o find_v our_o neighbour_n alexander_n to_o be_v than_o we_o do_v absolute_o conclude_v that_o he_o have_v no_o true_a faith_n in_o christ_n and_o therefore_o we_o shut_v the_o gate_n against_o he_o and_o keep_v he_o from_o the_o sacrament_n under_o the_o notion_n of_o a_o ignorant_a &_o profane_a man_n and_o suffer_v he_o not_o to_o come_v there_o whilst_o he_o remain_v in_o that_o condition_n yea_o and_o though_o we_o know_v a_o man_n that_o he_o live_v honest_o and_o peaceable_o among_o his_o neighbour_n and_o deal_v upright_o and_o just_o with_o all_o man_n give_v every_o man_n his_o due_a and_o for_o aught_o we_o know_v or_o can_v hear_v be_v free_a from_o all_o gross_a and_o scandalous_a sin_n yet_o if_o upon_o examination_n we_o find_v he_o to_o be_v gross_o ignorant_a then_o do_v we_o likewise_o conclude_v that_o he_o have_v no_o true_a faith_n in_o christ_n and_o so_o shut_v the_o gate_n against_o he_o also_o and_o keep_v he_o from_o the_o sacrament_n under_o the_o notion_n or_o a_o mere_a civil_a honest_a man_n and_o suffer_v he_o not_o to_o come_v there_o whilst_o he_o remain_v in_o that_o condition_n but_o if_o upon_o examination_n we_o find_v a_o man_n to_o have_v a_o competent_a measure_n of_o knowledge_n especial_o if_o it_o be_v experimental_a of_o himself_o and_o neither_o know_v nor_o can_v upon_o enquiry_n hear_v any_o thing_n to_o the_o contrary_a but_o that_o he_o lead_v both_o a_o civil_a and_o religious_a honest_a course_n of_o life_n though_o he_o be_v accuse_v to_o be_v but_o a_o formal_a legal_a professor_n yea_o and_o though_o we_o upon_o examination_n do_v find_v he_o not_o to_o be_v so_o clear_a and_o distinct_a in_o his_o knowledge_n touch_v the_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o law_n and_o the_o gospel_n or_o covenant_n of_o work_n and_o covenant_n of_o grace_n as_o we_o can_v wish_v he_o be_v yea_o and_o though_o for_o want_v of_o so_o clear_a a_o light_n betwixt_o justification_n and_o sanctification_n as_o some_o have_v he_o seem_v to_o confound_v the_o righteousness_n of_o justification_n with_o the_o righteousness_n of_o sanctification_n yet_o if_o he_o be_v a_o humble_a man_n &_o show_v it_o by_o confess_v his_o ignorance_n and_o his_o willingness_n to_o be_v better_o instruct_v herein_o then_o we_o judge_v in_o charity_n that_o he_o have_v true_a faith_n in_o christ_n and_o so_o open_a the_o gate_n of_o the_o sacrament_n and_o let_v he_o in_o but_o if_o upon_o examination_n we_o find_v a_o man_n ignorant_a in_o these_o point_n and_o yet_o because_o of_o his_o great_a measure_n of_o knowledge_n in_o other_o though_o not_o so_o necessary_a point_n to_o be_v know_v he_o be_v puff_v up_o and_o by_o reason_n of_o his_o righteous_a course_n of_o life_n be_v keep_v back_o from_o see_v his_o need_n of_o christ_n as_o it_o seem_v to_o i_o you_o be_v then_o be_v we_o jealous_a over_o 2_o 2_o cor._n two_o 2_o he_o with_o godly_a jealousy_n as_o the_o apostle_n be_v over_o the_o corinthian_n but_o yet_o we_o dare_v not_o absolute_o conclude_v that_o he_o have_v no_o true_a faith_n in_o christ_n and_o therefore_o we_o pray_v he_o as_o i_o do_v now_o pray_v you_o before_o you_o come_v to_o the_o sacrament_n to_o command_v with_o your_o own_o heart_n upon_o your_o bed_n as_o david_n exhort_v psal_n 4._o 4._o and_o to_o examine_v himself_o as_o you_o know_v the_o apostle_n exhort_v 1_o cor._n 11._o 28._o and_o if_o he_o come_v unto_o we_o again_o and_o acknowledge_v that_o upon_o serious_a examination_n of_o himself_o he_o have_v find_v that_o that_o with_o zealous_a paul_n before_o his_o conversion_n he_o

true_o have_v you_o ever_o go_v to_o the_o lord_n in_o prayer_n about_o your_o sin_n mat._n yea_o indeed_o sir_n i_o have_v of_o late_a divers_a time_n go_v private_o to_o prayer_n and_o have_v beseech_v the_o lord_n that_o he_o will_v be_v please_v for_o jesus_n christ_n sake_n to_o pardon_v my_o former_a sin_n and_o give_v i_o power_n to_o overcome_v my_o present_a corruption_n but_o yet_o alas_o all_o in_o vain_a for_o they_o do_v still_o remain_v with_o i_o min._n but_o do_v you_o believe_v that_o your_o former_a sin_n be_v pardon_v mat._n no_o sure_o sir_n i_o can_v believe_v that_o so_o so_o long_o as_o my_o present_a corruption_n do_v still_o remain_v unsubdued_a min._n weep_v not_o i_o pray_v you_o but_o consider_v that_o you_o have_v go_v a_o wrong_a way_n to_o work_v you_o will_v have_v your_o sin_n subdue_v before_o they_o be_v pardon_v whereas_o the_o lord_n do_v first_o pardon_n sin_n and_o then_o he_o give_v power_n against_o sin_n mat._n but_o sir_n i_o have_v think_v with_o myself_o that_o as_o when_o i_o be_v a_o child_n and_o have_v by_o the_o commit_n of_o any_o fault_n displease_v my_o father_n he_o will_v at_o my_o entreat_v forgive_v i_o upon_o condition_n that_o i_o do_v so_o no_o more_o but_o if_o i_o commit_v the_o like_a fault_n again_o than_o he_o will_v not_o forgive_v the_o former_a but_o reckon_v with_o i_o for_o they_o both_o even_o so_o i_o do_v conceive_v the_o lord_n will_v deal_v with_o i_o min._n but_o do_v not_o you_o tell_v i_o that_o you_o do_v beseech_v the_o lord_n to_o forgive_v you_o your_o sin_n for_o christ_n jesus_n sake_n mat._n yea_o indeed_o min._n and_o why_o have_v you_o ask_v it_o for_o christ_n sake_n mat._n because_o he_o have_v suffer_v death_n for_o my_o sin_n min._n and_o do_v you_o no●_n god_n in_o do_v his_o will_n and_o not_o transgress_v his_o commandment_n min._n and_o can_v you_o not_o believe_v it_o any_o long_a than_o you_o do_v so_o mat._n no_o indeed_o sir_n min._n why_o then_o you_o do_v not_o believe_v that_o god_n pardon_v your_o sin_n for_o christ_n sake_n but_o for_o your_o own_o sake_n not_o for_o christ_n obedience_n sake_n but_o for_o your_o own_o obedience_n sake_n mat._n indeed_o sir_n i_o can_v tell_v what_o to_o say_v to_o that_o min._n well_o neighbour_n mathias_n as_o you_o have_v beseech_v the_o lord_n to_o pardon_v and_o forgive_v you_o your_o sin_n for_o christ_n jesus_n sake_n do_v so_o still_o but_o withal_o believe_v that_o he_o have_v do_v so_o according_a to_o your_o petition_n yea_o and_o that_o absolute_o and_o not_o conditional_o as_o you_o have_v do_v and_o answerable_o as_o you_o do_v so_o you_o shall_v be_v sure_a to_o find_v and_o feel_v your_o sin_n mortify_v and_o subdue_v do_v but_o believe_v that_o you_o be_v wash_v by_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n from_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n and_o you_o shall_v be_v sure_a to_o find_v that_o you_o be_v cleanse_v by_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n from_o the_o filth_n of_o sin_n let_v a_o man_n say_v doctor_n preston_n but_o believe_v the_o cou._n on_o the_o new_a cou._n the_o promise_n of_o pardon_n in_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o very_a believe_a the_o pardon_n will_v be_v able_a to_o cleanse_v his_o heart_n from_o dead_a work_n for_o that_o faith_n which_o do_v lay_v hold_n on_o christ_n crucify_v say_v another_o godly_a divine_a do_v 292._o dyke_n on_o the_o sacrament_n p._n 292._o fetch_v a_o crucify_a virtue_n from_o he_o whereby_o the_o body_n of_o corruption_n be_v enfeeble_v and_o weaken_a mat._n o_o but_o sir_n i_o fear_v i_o shall_v not_o believe_v that_o my_o sin_n be_v pardon_v so_o long_o as_o they_o remain_v unsubdued_a min._n if_o you_o will_v not_o believe_v that_o your_o sin_n be_v pardon_v till_o they_o be_v quite_o subdue_v then_o will_v you_o not_o believe_v it_o whilst_o you_o live_v for_o so_o long_o as_o you_o live_v here_o you_o shall_v find_v and_o feel_v some_o remainder_n of_o sinful_a corruption_n unsubdued_a though_o you_o do_v believe_v and_o if_o you_o do_v not_o believe_v you_o shall_v not_o have_v they_o subdue_v at_o all_o by_o the_o sanctify_a spirit_n of_o christ_n indeed_o it_o be_v possible_a that_o after_o much_o strive_n against_o your_o corruption_n in_o your_o own_o strength_n you_o may_v see_v there_o be_v no_o strength_n in_o you_o to_o subdue_v they_o as_o you_o will_v and_o may_v thereupon_o go_v unto_o christ_n by_o prayer_n for_o grace_n and_o power_n to_o leave_v sin_n and_o do_v better_o and_o so_o live_v upon_o christ_n that_o you_o may_v live_v upon_o yourself_o i_o say_v you_o may_v go_v unto_o christ_n for_o power_n to_o do_v your_o work_n that_o so_o you_o may_v earn_v your_o wage_n and_o it_o be_v possible_a you_o may_v hereupon_o grow_v in_o legal_a righteousness_n as_o the_o stony_a and_o thorny_a ground_n seed_n spring_v up_o and_o increase_v much_o and_o come_v near_o unto_o maturity_n and_o yet_o this_o not_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o sanctify_a spirit_n of_o jesus_n christ_n wherefore_o i_o beseech_v you_o go_v not_o this_o way_n to_o work_v do_v not_o seek_v to_o have_v the_o righteousness_n of_o sanctification_n infuse_v into_o you_o before_o you_o seek_v to_o have_v the_o righteousness_n of_o justification_n impute_v unto_o you_o and_o so_o as_o much_o as_o in_o you_o lie_v to_o go_v about_o to_o pervert_v the_o lord_n own_o order_n and_o method_n do_v you_o not_o remember_v how_o i_o tell_v my_o neighbour_n simon_n that_o the_o lord_n order_n and_o method_n in_o justify_v and_o sanctify_v a_o sinner_n be_v first_o to_o justify_v he_o by_o impute_v the_o righteousness_n that_o be_v inherent_a in_o christ_n unto_o he_o and_o enable_v he_o to_o apprehend_v it_o by_o faith_n and_o then_o to_o sanctify_v he_o by_o infuse_v of_o righteousness_n into_o he_o by_o his_o spirit_n and_o this_o be_v the_o method_n which_o the_o prophet_n micah_n proclaim_v by_o way_n of_o admiration_n say_v who_o be_v a_o god_n like_o unto_o thou_o that_o pardon_v iniquity_n and_o pass_v by_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o remnant_n of_o his_o heritage_n he_o retain_v not_o his_o anger_n for_o ever_o because_o he_o delight_v in_o mercy_n here_o be_v the_o righteousness_n 18._o micah_n 7._o 18._o of_o justification_n and_o then_o in_o the_o next_o verse_n he_o proclaim_v the_o righteousness_n of_o sanctification_n say_v he_o will_v turn_v again_o he_o will_v have_v compassion_n upon_o we_o he_o will_v subdue_v our_o iniquity_n etc._n etc._n and_o this_o method_n the_o prophet_n david_n be_v well_o acquaint_v with_o and_o therefore_o in_o the_o first_o verse_n of_o the_o 51._o psalm_n he_o beseech_v the_o lord_n according_a to_o the_o multitude_n of_o his_o mercy_n to_o blot_v out_o his_o transgression_n and_o then_o in_o the_o ten_o ver_fw-la he_o say_v create_v in_o i_o a_o clean_a heart_n o_o god_n and_o renew_v a_o right_a spirit_n within_o i_o wherefore_o i_o beseech_v you_o corruption_n which_o be_v still_o in_o i_o that_o i_o very_o think_v i_o shall_v never_o be_v quiet_a in_o my_o mind_n whilst_o they_o and_o i_o live_v together_o min._n weep_v not_o i_o pray_v you_o except_o it_o be_v for_o joy_n for_o sure_o this_o fear_n be_v a_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o lord_n jesus_n for_o ordinary_o after_o conviction_n he_o let_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o elect_n such_o fear_n as_o these_o for_o although_o it_o be_v true_a there_o may_v be_v in_o a_o mere_a natural_a man_n certain_a natural_a fear_n arise_v from_o the_o accusation_n of_o his_o natural_a conscience_n yet_o they_o never_o affect_v his_o heart_n so_o as_o to_o work_v a_o separation_n betwixt_o his_o heart_n and_o his_o sin_n but_o your_o fear_n do_v so_o affect_v
