repentance_n be_v wrought_v in_o they_o this_o faith_n and_o this_o repentance_n wrought_v in_o a_o more_o general_a way_n at_o first_o do_v form_n themselves_o into_o more_o particular_a and_o distinct_a act_n afterward_o thus_o the_o principle_n of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n viz._n repentance_n from_o dead_a work_n and_o faith_n towards_o god_n be_v first_o lay_v and_o then_o there_o be_v in_o the_o light_n and_o power_n of_o these_o principle_n a_o go_v on_o unto_o perfection_n heb._n 6._o 1._o our_o first_o faith_n be_v a_o more_o general_a faith_n and_o so_o be_v our_o first_o repentance_n rather_o a_o inclination_n and_o tendency_n to_o believe_v and_o repent_v then_o actual_a faith_n or_o actual_a repentance_n our_o first_o faith_n wrought_v in_o we_o upon_o the_o repentance_n in_o order_n to_o a_o comfortable_a sense_n of_o pardon_n the_o spirit_n let_v in_o some_o sense_n of_o gospel_n grace_v tender_v unto_o sinner_n and_o affect_v the_o heart_n with_o it_o as_o very_o desirable_a as_o a_o very_a seasonable_a offer_n by_o no_o mean_n to_o be_v slight_v the_o soul_n begin_v to_o be_v take_v with_o it_o conceive_v some_o hope_n from_o it_o and_o this_o be_v the_o begin_n of_o faith_n and_o with_o our_o first_o faith_n light_n come_v in_o give_v we_o some_o gospel_n conviction_n of_o sin_n in_o order_n to_o repentance_n i_o call_v it_o a_o gospel_n conviction_n because_o it_o be_v wrought_v by_o mean_n of_o the_o gospel_n all_o after_o act_n of_o faith_n and_o repentance_n have_v their_o rise_n from_o this_o first_o work_n which_o bring_v i_o to_o the_o second_o point_n viz._n that_o faith_n be_v not_o only_o join_v with_o repentance_n in_o the_o first_o production_n of_o it_o as_o have_v be_v show_v but_o in_o all_o the_o subsequent_a act_n of_o it_o ever_o after_o which_o i_o make_v out_o thus_o faith_n and_o repentance_n do_v constant_o refer_v to_o each_o other_o in_o their_o several_a act_n faith_n to_o repentance_n and_o repentance_n to_o faith_n he_o that_o believe_v repent_v because_o he_o believe_v and_o he_o that_o repent_v believe_v because_o he_o repent_v i._n e._n as_o faith_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o repentance_n so_o repentance_n be_v the_o reason_n of_o every_o particular_a act_n of_o faith_n put_v forth_o upon_o christ_n for_o pardon_n it_o be_v impossible_a to_o make_v up_o the_o full_a sense_n of_o a_o act_n of_o faith_n on_o our_o part_n if_o you_o fetch_v not_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o from_o repentance_n why_o do_v we_o go_v to_o the_o physician_n be_v it_o not_o because_o we_o be_v sick_a weary_a and_o faint_a ready_a to_o die_v of_o such_o a_o disease_n so_o why_o do_v a_o weary_a soul_n come_v to_o christ_n be_v it_o not_o to_o be_v ease_v of_o his_o burden_n that_o insupportable_a burden_n of_o sin_n that_o be_v ready_a to_o sink_v he_o into_o hell._n if_o faith_n and_o repentance_n be_v thus_o always_o join_v together_o do_v it_o not_o follow_v that_o we_o be_v justify_v by_o our_o repentance_n as_o well_o as_o by_o faith_n i_o answer_v no._n though_o we_o be_v not_o save_v without_o repentance_n it_o do_v not_o therefore_o follow_v that_o we_o be_v justify_v by_o our_o repentance_n but_o some_o to_o make_v good_a this_o assertion_n have_v coin_a many_o subtle_a distinction_n relate_v to_o both_o before_o i_o give_v a_o particular_a reply_n to_o this_o let_v i_o say_v something_o in_o general_n religion_n may_v be_v consider_v either_o in_o its_o primitive_a purity_n and_o simplicity_n as_o it_o be_v lay_v down_o in_o the_o fundamental_a principle_n of_o it_o by_o christ_n and_o his_o apostle_n or_o as_o it_o have_v since_o be_v draw_v through_o the_o various_a discourse_n reason_v and_o write_n of_o man_n for_o so_o many_o century_n than_o it_o be_v in_o the_o apostle_n day_n the_o best_a way_n be_v to_o return_v to_o the_o primitive_a simplicity_n of_o the_o gospel_n especial_o in_o judge_v of_o fundamental_o which_o be_v plain_o and_o clear_o lay_v down_o there_o in_o term_n very_o intelligible_a though_o faith_n be_v the_o gift_n of_o god_n and_o be_v give_v of_o mere_a grace_n but_o to_o a_o few_o yet_o all_o who_o live_v under_o the_o light_n of_o the_o gospel_n may_v know_v what_o they_o ought_v to_o believe_v which_o will_v render_v their_o unbelief_n more_o inexcusable_a do_v we_o dwell_v more_o upon_o what_o be_v plain_o reveal_v as_o fundamental_o necessary_a to_o salvation_n we_o shall_v better_o discern_v by_o the_o light_n of_o those_o fundamental_o the_o just_a consequence_n of_o they_o in_o any_o deduction_n from_o they_o which_o may_v not_o be_v so_o particular_o and_o express_o speak_v unto_o in_o scripture_n but_o now_o to_o answer_v the_o query_n whether_o we_o may_v not_o be_v say_v to_o be_v justify_v by_o our_o repentance_n as_o well_o as_o by_o faith_n since_o we_o be_v not_o save_v without_o repentance_n answ._n there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o difference_n between_o justification_n and_o salvation_n salvation_n include_v all_o qualification_n belong_v to_o that_o state_n justification_n let_v we_o into_o that_o state_n give_v we_o right_o to_o life_n from_o whence_o spring_n all_o qualification_n become_v that_o life_n beside_o save_v grace_n be_v so_o call_v not_o that_o they_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o salvation_n but_o because_o they_o accompany_v it_o we_o can_v be_v save_v without_o they_o faith_n itself_o as_o a_o grace_n inherent_a in_o we_o be_v no_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o our_o justification_n it_o be_v that_o which_o carry_v we_o out_o of_o ourselves_o to_o christ_n for_o righteousness_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o which_o we_o be_v justify_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n when_o we_o say_v we_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n we_o do_v mean_v we_o be_v justify_v by_o any_o thing_n in_o ourselves_o we_o can_v understand_v it_o so_o but_o the_o contrary_a that_o we_o must_v be_v behold_v to_o christ_n for_o all_o he_o that_o receive_v all_o from_o another_o give_v nothing_o to_o himself_o he_o do_v indeed_o apply_v to_o himself_o to_o his_o own_o use_n and_o benefit_n what_o be_v free_o give_v to_o he_o by_o another_o but_o he_o can_v in_o any_o propriety_n of_o speech_n be_v say_v to_o ascribe_v any_o thing_n to_o himself_o or_o to_o owe_v himself_o thanks_o for_o what_o he_o receive_v from_o another_o faith_n in_o its_o justify_n act_n do_v not_o look_v to_o itself_o as_o our_o grace_n but_o unto_o christ_n as_o our_o righteousness_n the_o inherent_a grace_n of_o faith_n be_v not_o our_o justify_n righteousness_n though_o it_o lead_v we_o out_o to_o he_o who_o be_v faith_n be_v the_o hand_n but_o christ_n be_v the_o gift_n nay_o the_o hand_n
every_o sin_n you_o shall_v fall_v into_o and_o shall_v we_o begin_v in_o the_o spirit_n and_o end_n in_o the_o flesh._n 3._o because_o they_o have_v long_o since_o reform_v what_o be_v amiss_o in_o their_o life_n and_o refrain_v from_o the_o outward_a act_n of_o those_o sin_n they_o live_v in_o heretofore_o all_o this_o may_v be_v without_o any_o true_a repentance_n you_o say_v you_o have_v man_n may_v for_o a_o spurt_n force_v themselves_o to_o a_o outward_a course_n of_o holiness_n but_o they_o can_v never_o hold_v it_o the_o heart_n will_v go_v its_o own_o way_n and_o carry_v the_o man_n after_o it_o nothing_o but_o repentance_n make_v a_o man_n a_o better_a man_n than_o he_o be_v before_o a_o man_n be_v the_o same_o that_o ever_o he_o be_v till_o he_o repent_v than_o indeed_o he_o be_v another_o man_n of_o another_o mind_n 4._o because_o they_o reckon_v all_o their_o particular_a sin_n among_o their_o infirmity_n and_o therefore_o a_o slight_a repentance_n will_v serve_v the_o turn_n they_o think_v they_o will_v be_v pardon_v of_o course_n to_o they_o without_o any_o more_o ado_n i_o look_v upon_o it_o as_o a_o great_a error_n to_o hold_v that_o all_o sin_n commit_v in_o a_o state_n of_o grace_n be_v sin_n of_o infirmity_n saint_n themselves_o may_v be_v guilty_a of_o wilful_a presumptuous_a sin_n and_o when_o they_o be_v they_o must_v not_o think_v to_o shift_v they_o off_o as_o common_a infirmity_n i_o grant_v those_o grosser_n act_n of_o sin_n that_o a_o saint_n may_v be_v surprise_v into_o do_v argue_v a_o infirm_a imperfect_a state_n their_o state_n may_v be_v good_a though_o imperfect_a there_o may_v be_v some_o good_a thing_n in_o their_o heart_n towards_o god_n when_o they_o fall_v foul_a as_o david_n and_o peter_n do_v but_o i_o be_o not_o now_o inquire_v what_o be_v in_o their_o heart_n but_o what_o be_v in_o those_o grosser_n act_n of_o sin_n viz._n murder_n adultery_n and_o the_o like_a i_o say_v there_o be_v nothing_o but_o evil_a in_o they_o they_o be_v all_o over_o and_o throughout_o sinful_a now_o what_o be_v moral_o evil_a and_o sinful_a in_o its_o own_o nature_n can_v proper_o be_v call_v a_o sin_n of_o infirmity_n because_o a_o infirmity_n in_o the_o true_a notion_n of_o it_o be_v the_o deficiency_n of_o a_o good_a action_n it_o be_v not_o so_o good_a as_o it_o shall_v be_v absolute_o evil_a in_o itself_o it_o be_v not_o v_o g._n a_o child_n of_o god_n pray_v but_o not_o so_o fervent_o as_o he_o shall_v he_o hear_v the_o word_n but_o not_o so_o attentive_o as_o he_o shall_v he_o believe_v in_o christ_n but_o not_o so_o firm_o so_o strong_o so_o steadfast_o as_o he_o will_v this_o be_v his_o infirmity_n here_o the_o action_n itself_o or_o the_o thing_n do_v be_v for_o the_o substance_n and_o matter_n of_o it_o good_a in_o itself_o what_o god_n have_v command_v but_o when_o we_o do_v that_o which_o be_v material_o evil_a in_o its_o own_o nature_n and_o forbid_v by_o god_n this_o be_v more_o than_o a_o infirmity_n the_o whole_a action_n be_v naught_o it_o be_v not_o a_o weak_a action_n but_o a_o wicked_a one_o he_o that_o be_v a_o infirm_a man_n be_v a_o live_a man_n a_o dead_a man_n be_v more_o than_o infirm_a he_o have_v no_o life_n at_o all_o in_o he_o that_o be_v capable_a of_o infirmity_n if_o a_o child_n of_o god_n shall_v swear_v be_v drink_v or_o commit_v whoredom_n etc._n etc._n i_o will_v not_o say_v as_o some_o do_v oh_o the_o infirmity_n of_o the_o saint_n but_o i_o will_v say_v oh_o the_o wickedness_n the_o lewdness_n of_o the_o saint_n you_o will_v think_v these_o hard_a word_n hard_a thing_n must_v have_v hard_a word_n they_o that_o do_v well_o shall_v hear_v well_o and_o they_o that_o do_v ill_o must_v hear_v ill_a sin_n be_v not_o the_o less_o sinful_a because_o a_o godly_a man_n commit_v it_o it_o fall_v under_o great_a aggravation_n in_o he_o than_o in_o another_o there_o may_v be_v some_o good_a thing_n in_o his_o heart_n but_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o these_o sinful_a act_n but_o what_o be_v moral_o evil_a and_o abominable_o wicked_a this_o shall_v awaken_v we_o to_o repentance_n be_v there_o not_o sin_n even_o among_o we_o against_o the_o lord_n our_o god_n 6._o the_o application_n repentance_n be_v the_o plain_a and_o sure_a evidence_n of_o save_v faith_n let_v we_o be_v much_o in_o the_o exercise_n of_o this_o grace_n we_o shall_v repent_v as_o often_o as_o there_o be_v new_a matter_n for_o repentance_n i_o do_v not_o say_v we_o shall_v always_o be_v grieve_v and_o mourn_v for_o the_o same_o sin_n repentance_n may_v have_v its_o perfect_a work_n in_o reference_n to_o some_o particular_a sin_n which_o god_n have_v sufficient_o humble_v we_o for_o there_o be_v a_o time_n to_o set_v break_a bone_n we_o may_v rejoice_v in_o the_o cure_n in_o that_o ease_n and_o rest_v that_o god_n give_v we_o when_o he_o speak_v peace_n to_o we_o by_o believe_v we_o enter_v into_o rest_n till_o some_o new_a sin_n disturb_v our_o rest_n and_o then_o repentance_n be_v to_o be_v renew_v by_o a_o new_a sin_n i_o do_v mean_v common_a unavoidable_a infirmity_n but_o some_o grosser_n wilful_a miscarriage_n we_o ought_v to_o be_v humble_v under_o our_o infirmity_n to_o confess_v they_o and_o so_o to_o pass_v on_o by_o a_o present_a act_n of_o faith_n into_o our_o wont_a serenity_n and_o peace_n of_o conscience_n not_o doubt_v but_o god_n will_v overlook_v they_o for_o christ_n sake_n faith_n be_v not_o so_o put_v to_o it_o do_v not_o labour_v so_o much_o to_o take_v in_o the_o pardon_n of_o they_o as_o it_o do_v and_o must_v do_v to_o obtain_v the_o pardon_n of_o grosser_n sin_n which_o put_v the_o soul_n at_o a_o great_a distance_n from_o god_n then_o common_a infirmity_n do_v which_o be_v pardon_v of_o course_n to_o believer_n upon_o their_o humble_a acknowledgement_n of_o they_o but_o in_o case_n of_o any_o particular_a wilful_a sin_n we_o must_v renew_v our_o repentance_n in_o a_o more_o solemn_a manner_n and_o afflict_v our_o soul_n for_o it_o how_o long_a god_n may_v keep_v we_o mourning_n before_o he_o restore_v to_o we_o the_o joy_n of_o our_o salvation_n must_v be_v leave_v to_o he_o who_o know_v when_o to_o administer_v comfort_n to_o we_o in_o the_o fit_a season_n when_o we_o be_v about_o this_o work_n it_o be_v good_a to_o reflect_v upon_o former_a sin_n already_o pardon_v there_o sinfulness_n appear_v through_o the_o pardon_n we_o may_v join_v our_o old_a score_n to_o this_o new_a reckon_n and_o carry_v over_o all_o to_o the_o present_a account_n that_o have_v the_o sum_n total_a before_o we_o we_o may_v bewail_v the_o late_a addition_n we_o have_v make_v to_o it_o when_o we_o see_v how_o high_a it_o rise_v every_o new_a offence_n receive_v a_o aggravation_n from_o so_o many_o that_o go_v before_o it_o be_v some_o extenuation_n of_o a_o fault_n to_o say_v it_o be_v the_o first_o time_n but_o frequent_a relapse_n into_o the_o same_o sin_n do_v heighten_v the_o guilt_n of_o it_o and_o in_o such_o case_n there_o be_v nothing_o but_o repent_v or_o perish_v the_o more_o you_o be_v in_o the_o exercise_n of_o this_o grace_n of_o repentance_n the_o less_o inclinable_a will_v you_o be_v to_o any_o sin_n i_o be_o persuade_v be_v the_o devil_n sure_o you_o will_v repent_v he_o will_v not_o be_v so_o forward_o to_o tempt_v you_o to_o any_o sin_n nothing_o do_v so_o enrage_v the_o devil_n as_o the_o repentance_n of_o the_o saint_n can_v he_o keep_v they_o always_o in_o that_o mind_n they_o be_v in_o in_o the_o hour_n of_o a_o prevail_a temptation_n he_o may_v glory_n over_o they_o but_o when_o they_o come_v to_o themselves_o and_o consider_v better_o of_o it_o how_o do_v they_o inveigh_v against_o the_o tempter_n and_o cry_v down_o the_o sin_n as_o a_o abominable_a practice_n and_o what_o do_v the_o devil_n get_v by_o this_o he_o lose_v more_o by_o their_o repentance_n then_o ever_o he_o get_v by_o their_o
