root_n of_o our_o person_n at_o that_o time_n but_o of_o that_o regenerate_a virtue_n whereby_o we_o become_v believer_n and_o therefore_o tho_o as_o to_o this_o change_n of_o our_o qualification_n we_o may_v be_v call_v christ_n seed_n when_o we_o believe_v yet_o it_o be_v not_o such_o a_o seed_n as_o it_o may_v be_v say_v of_o we_o suffer_v in_o he_o as_o we_o sin_v in_o adam_n who_o be_v the_o natural_a root_n of_o our_o person_n and_o thereupon_o such_o a_o representative_a as_o his_o descendants_n sin_v in_o what_o may_v be_v say_v of_o christ_n adopt_v merit_n will_v have_v no_o place_n here_o for_o these_o author_n make_v adoption_n to_o be_v a_o effect_n of_o justification_n and_o so_o the_o imputation_n be_v prior_n 2._o there_o be_v other_o who_o be_v for_o impute_a righteousness_n in_o se_fw-la but_o can_v approve_v of_o the_o former_a manner_n of_o imputation_n among_o who_o there_o be_v some_o variety_n in_o word_v their_o conception_n but_o they_o come_v to_o one_o and_o the_o same_o thing_n viz._n that_o god_n adjudge_v the_o believer_n to_o be_v one_o who_o absolution_n adoption_n and_o glory_n be_v promise_v to_o christ_n in_o reward_n of_o his_o death_n and_o obedience_n by_o the_o covenant_n of_o redemption_n which_o be_v promise_v also_o to_o the_o believer_n himself_o in_o the_o gospel-covenant_n and_o for_o his_o actual_a interest_n and_o enjoyment_n thereof_o as_o also_o acceptance_n and_o treatment_n as_o a_o righteous_a person_n against_o all_o challenge_n god_n judicial_o account_n what_o christ_n have_v do_v and_o suffer_v to_o be_v his_o pleadable_a security_n this_o we_o take_v to_o be_v imputation_n second_o by_o the_o opinion_n of_o those_o who_o say_v christ_n righteousness_n be_v not_o impute_v in_fw-la se_fw-la but_o only_a as_o to_o effect_n they_o in_o expression_n oppose_v all_o the_o forementioned_a account_n deny_v that_o the_o first_o head_n be_v true_a and_o that_o the_o second_o be_v any_o imputation_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n in_o se._n nevertheless_o they_o grant_v that_o christ_n righteousness_n be_v the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o our_o justification_n by_o faith_n and_o seem_v to_o insist_v most_o upon_o its_o efficacy_n to_o that_o end_n as_o christ_n satisfaction_n be_v the_o ground_n upon_o which_o god_n enact_v the_o gospel-covenant_n wherein_o our_o faith_n though_o imperfect_a be_v account_v for_o righteousness_n concern_v this_o opinion_n i_o shall_v offer_v a_o few_o thing_n 1._o none_o ought_v to_o narrow_a it_o as_o if_o the_o author_n mean_v that_o pardon_n and_o eternal_a life_n be_v not_o merit_v by_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n for_o they_o affirm_v that_o these_o and_o other_o gospel-blessing_n be_v merit_v by_o christ_n as_o well_o as_o the_o gospel-covenant_n pray_v say_v not_o this_o it_o be_v not_o only_o the_o covenant_n itself_o but_o those_o very_a blessing_n which_o that_o covenant_n convey_v that_o be_v the_o merit_a effect_n of_o christ_n death_n and_o obedience_n they_o be_v his_o deserve_a reward_n which_o be_v dispense_v to_o we_o upon_o believe_v this_o i_o insert_v to_o obviate_v a_o conceit_n too_o much_o improve_v by_o some_o so_o stupid_a or_o worse_o that_o they_o will_v not_o own_o this_o distinction_n and_o still_o cry_v out_o as_o if_o their_o opinion_n confine_v the_o influence_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n to_o the_o procure_n of_o a_o law_n whereby_o man_n be_v to_o purchase_v pardon_n and_o life_n by_o their_o own_o faith_n whereas_o they_o be_v so_o far_o from_o this_o that_o they_o affirm_v these_o blessing_n be_v already_o account_v purchase_v and_o authority_n in_o christ_n to_o dispense_v they_o before_o he_o can_v enact_v such_o a_o law_n 2._o they_o intend_v not_o to_o exclude_v christ_n righteousness_n from_o be_v impute_v in_o any_o sense_n for_o they_o say_v its_o impute_a quoad_fw-la effectus_fw-la and_o therefore_o shall_v not_o be_v charge_v to_o deny_v all_o imputation_n or_o represent_v to_o say_v we_o be_v pardon_v and_o save_v for_o our_o own_o work_n without_o any_o imputation_n of_o christ_n death_n and_o obedience_n at_o all_o 3._o in_o all_o which_o they_o affirm_v concern_v justification_n they_o still_o suppose_v christ_n complete_a satisfaction_n and_o be_v sound_a therein_o none_o can_v accuse_v they_o to_o differ_v from_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n and_o how_o can_v pardon_n be_v the_o effect_n of_o impute_v faith_n for_o righteousness_n which_o be_v justification_n and_o yet_o god_n can_v impute_v faith_n for_o what_o amount_v to_o a_o real_a imputation_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n in_o se_fw-la at_o lest_o what_o suppose_v this_o imputation_n and_o infer_v it_o to_o be_v necessary_a for_o how_o by_o christ_n merit_n can_v a_o righteousness_n in_o itself_o imperfect_a be_v reckon_v before_o a_o just_a god_n for_o our_o perfect_a righteousness_n and_o yet_o those_o merit_n for_o which_o it_o be_v so_o reckon_v not_o be_v impute_v at_o all_o for_o righteousness_n to_o we_o who_o have_v that_o faith_n will_v faith_n be_v no_o righteousness_n except_o the_o divine_a mind_n do_v apply_v the_o merit_n of_o christ_n to_o faith_n to_o make_v it_o a_o righteousness_n upon_o which_o i_o be_o account_v righteous_a by_o this_o faith_n and_o yet_o the_o divine_a mind_n not_o apply_v to_o i_o that_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n without_o which_o my_o faith_n have_v leave_v i_o still_o unrighteous_a whereas_o it_o seem_v undeniable_a as_o far_o as_o christ_n righteousness_n be_v necessary_a to_o make_v my_o personal_a faith_n my_o righteousness_n in_o god_n account_n that_o same_o very_a righteousness_n be_v necessary_a to_o make_v my_o person_n righteous_a in_o god_n account_n moreover_o they_o own_o that_o god_n promise_v to_o christ_n in_o reward_n of_o his_o merit_a suffering_n and_o obedience_n that_o all_o believer_n shall_v be_v absolve_v and_o glorify_v and_o can_v they_o be_v adjudge_v to_o this_o absolution_n and_o glory_n without_o a_o judicial_a acknowledgement_n that_o they_o be_v to_o be_v absolve_v and_o glorify_v in_o that_o right_n of_o interest_n they_o also_o abhor_v a_o thought_n that_o our_o faith_n can_v be_v present_v to_o god_n as_o any_o righteousness_n in_o satisfaction_n to_o justice_n atonement_n for_o our_o sin_n or_o righteousness_n not_o be_v impute_v to_o we_o can_v our_o righteous_a judge_n declare_v himself_o satisfy_v atone_v and_o reconcile_v to_o we_o sinner_n for_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n and_o not_o impute_v to_o we_o that_o righteousness_n in_o se_fw-la as_o what_o he_o account_v a_o plea_n for_o we_o in_o his_o account_n can_v we_o enjoy_v the_o merit_a effect_n of_o christ_n death_n and_o that_o death_n not_o be_v reckon_v what_o secure_v to_o we_o those_o effect_n against_o the_o challenge_n which_o the_o merit_n of_o it_o be_v design_v to_o answer_v final_o do_v not_o these_o divine_v oft_o rest_v on_o and_o plead_v with_o god_n the_o merit_n of_o christ_n more_o immediate_o and_o direct_o than_o a_o denial_n of_o imputation_n will_v admit_v when_o they_o rest_v on_o christ_n righteousness_n and_o plead_v it_o with_o god_n for_o pardon_n though_o its_o true_a we_o can_v not_o expect_v pardon_n for_o it_o be_v not_o pardon_v promise_v for_o the_o sake_n thereof_o i_o think_v their_o mind_n oft_o act_v more_o direct_o and_o full_o towards_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n than_o to_o intend_v it_o thus_o viz._n i_o trust_v in_o christ_n merit_n for_o pardon_n as_o that_o pardon_n be_v the_o effect_n of_o that_o justification_n wherein_o our_o faith_n be_v account_v through_o christ_n satisfaction_n a_o righteousness_n according_a to_o the_o gospel-covenant_n which_o covenant_n be_v procure_v by_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n death_n i._o grant_v there_o may_v be_v use_n of_o this_o progressive_a manner_n of_o arrive_v at_o christ_n death_n for_o support_v of_o our_o faith_n as_o we_o confine_v its_o regard_n to_o the_o gospel-covenant_n and_o examine_v our_o interest_n thereby_o as_o a_o rule_n of_o judgement_n but_o i_o humble_o think_v that_o when_o we_o plead_v with_o god_n for_o pardon_n for_o the_o sake_n of_o christ_n merit_n we_o have_v a_o more_o direct_a eye_n to_o the_o covenant_n of_o redemption_n wherein_o a_o pardon_n be_v promise_v to_o christ_n for_o believer_n in_o reward_n of_o his_o death_n and_o which_o the_o gospel_n distinct_o express_v in_o this_o viz._n that_o pardon_n be_v grant_v for_o the_o sake_n of_o christ_n death_n as_o what_o procure_v it_o in_o se_fw-mi as_o well_o as_o what_o merit_v the_o gospel-covenant_n which_o be_v the_o instrument_n of_o the_o donation_n of_o it_o and_o so_o by_o keep_v our_o eye_n on_o the_o covenant_n of_o redemption_n we_o plead_v christ_n right_a as_o more_o immediate_o imputable_a and_o by_o keep_v our_o thought_n on_o the_o gospel-connexion_n between_o pardon_n and_o christ_n death_n as_o the_o procure_a merit_n of_o it_o we_o plead_v christ_n very_a performance_n mediate_o impute_v viz._n as_o our_o pleadable_a security_n for_o our_o certain_a obtain_n and_o safe_a enjoy_v the_o say_a forgiveness_n 6._o the_o reason_n why_o these_o venerable_a person_n be_v so_o intent_n to_o deny_v a_o imputation_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n in_o se_fw-la be_v 1._o a_o apprehension_n that_o there_o be_v no_o such_o imputation_n unless_o we_o be_v account_v by_o god_n to_o have_v do_v and_o suffer_v what_o christ_n do_v which_o will_v unavoidable_o induce_v the_o antinomian_a scheme_n as_o most_o consistent_a but_o that_o i_o deny_v to_o be_v the_o only_a import_n of_o that_o phrase_n for_o when_o that_o righteousness_n itself_o be_v impute_v relative_o to_o the_o special_a effect_n of_o it_o it_o be_v true_o a_o imputation_n of_o it_o in_o se_fw-la and_o whereas_o they_o of_o the_o other_o extreme_a say_v that_o its_o be_v a_o pleadable_a security_n for_o our_o pardon_n be_v but_o a_o effect_n i_o answer_v this_o righteousness_n itself_o be_v that_o security_n be_v a_o effect_n of_o the_o compact_a between_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n and_o it_o be_v not_o this_o effect_n be_v impute_v but_o the_o righteousness_n itself_o as_o such_o and_o by_o the_o same_o rule_n as_o they_o can_v deny_v it_o to_o be_v impute_v in_o se_fw-la because_o it_o be_v impute_v as_o a_o pleadable_a security_n they_o may_v better_o say_v it_o be_v be_v impute_v for_o justification_n and_o for_o atonement_n etc._n etc._n will_v make_v it_o to_o be_v no_o imputation_n of_o it_o in_o se_fw-mi for_o those_o be_v but_o effect_n and_o that_o by_o virtue_n of_o the_o same_o compact_a 2._o a_o zeal_n for_o the_o gospel-righteousness_n of_o faith_n but_o that_o be_v very_o consistent_a with_o the_o impute_a righteousness_n of_o christ_n and_o tho_o both_o meet_v in_o our_o justification_n yet_o it_o be_v under_o very_o distinct_a consideration_n of_o which_o afterward_o nor_o can_v i_o forbear_v again_o to_o inform_v the_o world_n that_o both_o extreme_n arise_v from_o too_o much_o disregard_n of_o the_o one_o or_o the_o other_o covenant_n wherein_o the_o salvation_n of_o a_o sinner_n be_v adjust_v these_o brethren_n forget_v the_o covenant_n of_o redemption_n to_o which_o the_o gospel-covenant_n be_v subordinate_a too_o little_o mention_v the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n the_o other_o brethren_n overlook_v the_o gospel-covenant_n and_o darken_v a_o gospel-righteousness_n of_o faith_n whereas_o a_o distinct_a respect_n to_o the_o rule_n of_o satisfaction_n and_o impetration_n on_o the_o one_o hand_n and_o to_o the_o rule_n of_o the_o application_n of_o impetrate_v benefit_n on_o the_o other_o hand_n will_v put_v a_o period_n to_o their_o principal_a dispute_n from_o this_o representation_n of_o the_o several_a sentiment_n of_o the_o brethren_n concern_v in_o the_o point_n before_o we_o a_o mutual_a forbearance_n seem_v no_o unjustifiable_a thing_n between_o they_o who_o differ_v most_o and_o no_o considerable_a disagreement_n remain_v between_o the_o other_o 1._o they_o who_o think_v the_o imputation_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n in_o se_fw-la be_v god_n reckon_a we_o do_v and_o suffer_v what_o christ_n do_v claim_v a_o tender_a regard_n from_o they_o who_o say_v it_o be_v impute_v only_o as_o to_o effect_n for_o they_o disow_v the_o antinomian_a consequence_n of_o it_o and_o abhor_v all_o abuse_n of_o it_o to_o carnal_a boast_n and_o profane_a libertinism_n of_o which_o before_o how_o unreasonable_a then_o be_v it_o to_o perpetuate_v contest_v about_o this_o point_n from_o the_o ill_a consequence_n of_o it_o when_o those_o consequence_n be_v deny_v on_o the_o other_o hand_n it_o appear_v too_o like_o uncharitable_a rigidness_n for_o they_o to_o condemn_v as_o intolerable_a such_o who_o say_v christ_n righteousness_n be_v impute_v only_o as_o to_o effect_n for_o whatever_o be_v the_o sound_n of_o their_o word_n they_o ascribe_v nothing_o to_o faith_n or_o work_n which_o belong_v to_o christ_n righteousness_n nor_o do_v they_o detract_v from_o the_o honour_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n any_o thing_n which_o these_o brethren_n ascribe_v thereto_o and_o be_v orthodox_n in_o the_o doctrine_n of_o satisfaction_n against_o socinianism_n and_o popery_n when_o they_o say_v faith_n be_v a_o accept_a righteousness_n mean_v they_o that_o it_o be_v a_o satisfaction_n either_o to_o atone_v for_o sin_n or_o merit_v life_n no_o they_o abhor_v it_o and_o confine_v both_o to_o christ_n righteousness_n entire_o but_o they_o do_v not_o say_v christ_n righteousness_n be_v impute_v that_o be_v not_o true_a for_o they_o say_v it_o be_v impute_v ay_o but_o not_o in_o se._n but_o shall_v that_o be_v so_o will_v not_o it_o be_v far_o from_o a_o christian_a spirit_n to_o be_v implacable_a for_o not_o use_v a_o phrase_n which_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n make_v no_o use_n of_o who_o sure_o know_v how_o to_o express_v truth_n as_o proper_o as_o fallible_a man_n shall_v pretend_v to_o yea_o but_o the_o scripture_n
