he_o to_o bear_v his_o pain_n this_o must_v needs_o be_v the_o worst_a time_n you_o be_v mistake_v if_o you_o think_v the_o apply_v of_o god_n mercy_n in_o christ_n be_v but_o in_o say_v lord_n have_v mercy_n upon_o i_o no_o it_o be_v god_n put_v the_o heart_n of_o man_n to_o do_v the_o most_o glorious_a work_n that_o have_v the_o great_a operation_n in_o it_o that_o ever_o he_o do_v i_o remember_v it_o relate_v of_o one_o that_o live_v wicked_o and_o divers_a seek_v to_o reclaim_v he_o say_v he_o come_v when_o i_o be_o upon_o my_o sick_a bed_n that_o be_v time_n enough_o and_o afterward_o he_o be_v sick_a be_v put_v in_o mind_n of_o it_o you_o say_v you_o will_v do_v it_o then_o but_o then_o he_o swear_v a_o great_a oath_n say_v what_o be_v this_o a_o time_n to_o repent_v in_o because_o mistake_v that_o be_v the_o main_a prop_n of_o many_o carnal_a heart_n as_o it_o be_v read_v in_o some_o book_n at_o what_o time_n soever_o a_o sinner_n repent_v etc._n etc._n i_o know_v no_o such_o text_n of_o scripture_n it_o be_v true_a there_o be_v scripture_n tend_v that_o way_n that_o do_v not_o limit_v the_o time_n but_o no_o scripture_n do_v express_v it_o so_o many_o people_n run_v away_o with_o that_o
to_o god_n and_o make_v they_o inquire_v after_o christ_n and_o stir_v up_o their_o heart_n to_o take_v away_o those_o thing_n that_o do_v hinder_v from_o christ_n but_o it_o do_v not_o interest_n the_o soul_n in_o christ_n you_o do_v not_o understand_v the_o way_n of_o the_o gospel_n if_o you_o think_v that_o sorrow_n interest_n the_o soul_n in_o christ_n no_o that_o must_v be_v by_o faith_n lay_v hold_n on_o he_o for_o justification_n and_o then_o come_v sorrow_n of_o repentance_n after_o thou_o may_v see_v thyself_o a_o undo_v wretch_n for_o sin_n and_o lose_v for_o ever_o and_o nothing_o in_o the_o world_n can_v quiet_v thou_o all_o this_o may_v be_v by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n but_o then_o god_n come_v and_o show_v thou_o his_o grace_n in_o christ_n and_o enable_v ought_v not_o to_o offend_v god_n and_o he_o know_v he_o have_v need_n to_o have_v mercy_n from_o god_n and_o that_o he_o ought_v to_o be_v sorrowful_a for_o his_o sin_n i_o may_v give_v you_o many_o example_n for_o it_o but_o i_o must_v hasten_v those_o then_o that_o seek_v after_o pardon_n of_o sin_n this_o way_n do_v but_o seek_v for_o it_o mere_o in_o a_o natural_a way_n second_o other_o say_v sin_v not_o pardon_v for_o that_o take_v the_o example_n of_o herod_n it_o be_v say_v he_o hear_v john_n baptist_n glad_o and_o reform_v in_o many_o thing_n he_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n the_o better_a for_o john_n ministry_n and_o yet_o herod_n be_v not_o pardon_v this_o be_v a_o notable_a example_n for_o you_o that_o come_v to_o hear_v sermon_n and_o seem_v to_o be_v much_o affect_v let_v i_o ask_v you_o in_o the_o name_n of_o god_n and_o let_v conscience_n answer_v what_o be_v it_o you_o reform_v since_o you_o hear_v all_o those_o sermon_n of_o the_o evil_a of_o sin_n and_o now_o of_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n what_o evil_n have_v you_o reform_v in_o your_o family_n and_o in_o your_o own_o heart_n i_o can_v but_o hope_v that_o many_o of_o you_o may_v say_v through_o grace_n these_o and_o these_o evil_n be_v in_o my_o family_n before_o but_o now_o i_o have_v reform_v they_o and_o these_o evil_n i_o do_v before_o but_o now_o i_o have_v leave_v they_o i_o hope_v many_o can_v say_v so_o and_o bless_v be_v god_n for_o this_o fruit_n of_o our_o ministry_n if_o any_o thing_n be_v reform_v if_o sabbath_n be_v better_a keep_v and_o duty_n in_o family_n set_v up_o and_o private_a exercise_n of_o religion_n perform_v that_o you_o be_v not_o so_o proud_a passionate_a and_o froward_a as_o before_o o_o that_o it_o may_v be_v say_v so_o it_o be_v worth_a our_o labour_n to_o restrain_v sin_n that_o god_n may_v not_o be_v so_o much_o dishonour_v if_o there_o be_v no_o more_o do_v but_o we_o preach_v for_o further_a and_o high_a end_n that_o soul_n will_v not_o stay_v in_o reform_v for_o herod_n hear_v john_n baptist_n and_o do_v many_o thing_n and_o judas_n cast_v away_o the_o money_n he_o repent_v and_o will_v not_o keep_v the_o money_n there_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o reformation_n in_o both_o herod_n and_o judas_n but_o this_o be_v no_o ground_n to_o build_v upon_o for_o pardon_n of_o sin_n as_o those_o that_o depend_v on_o their_o sorrow_n for_o pardon_n build_v on_o the_o quagmire_n so_o those_o that_o depend_v on_o their_o reformation_n build_v upon_o the_o sand_n the_o one_o by_o his_o sorrow_n and_o trouble_n for_o sin_n seem_v as_o it_o be_v to_o be_v in_o the_o work_n of_o humiliation_n be_v like_o a_o man_n that_o dig_v deep_a for_o a_o foundation_n but_o do_v not_o cast_v out_o the_o old_a mould_n but_o build_v upon_o it_o the_o other_o seem_v like_o one_o that_o not_o only_o dig_v deep_a but_o cast_v out_o the_o old_a rubbish_n and_o bring_v in_o new_a mould_n new_a earth_n lay_v by_o and_o cast_v away_o his_o former_a sin_n and_o do_v the_o contrary_a good_a but_o now_o though_o they_o go_v further_o than_o the_o former_a in_o cast_v out_o the_o old_a rubbish_n and_o bring_v in_o of_o new_a earth_n yet_o after_o all_o this_o be_v do_v they_o build_v upon_o it_o and_o do_v not_o build_v upon_o the_o rock_n christ_n they_o bring_v in_o the_o new_a earth_n of_o their_o own_o performance_n and_o duty_n and_o this_o they_o build_v upon_o and_o do_v not_o build_v upon_o the_o rock_n christ_n for_o the_o pardon_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o justification_n of_o their_o soul_n before_o god_n and_o here_o they_o fail_v and_o this_o be_v their_o undo_n their_o mistake_n in_o this_o and_o yet_o it_o be_v most_o sure_a that_o every_o one_o of_o we_o will_v mistake_v in_o this_o if_o god_n do_v not_o reveal_v in_o the_o gospel_n another_o way_n to_o receive_v pardon_n and_o justification_n in_o his_o son_n we_o shall_v certain_o all_o of_o we_o rest_n here_o and_o go_v no_o further_o no_o man_n or_o woman_n in_o the_o world_n that_o never_o hear_v the_o gospel_n go_v further_a than_o this_o and_o so_o far_o one_o may_v go_v without_o the_o gospel_n we_o may_v dig_v deep_a cast_v out_o the_o old_a rubbish_n and_o bring_v in_o new_a earth_n this_o we_o may_v do_v and_o not_o hear_v of_o the_o gospel_n and_o therefore_o we_o have_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o cause_n to_o bless_v god_n that_o we_o may_v hear_v the_o mystery_n of_o the_o gospel_n open_v unto_o we_o for_o certain_o we_o shall_v else_o go_v no_o further_o and_o if_o we_o go_v no_o further_o we_o shall_v certain_o perish_v and_o therefore_o if_o we_o go_v but_o thus_o far_o it_o be_v not_o build_v on_o the_o rock_n christ_n hence_o the_o ground_n and_o bottom_n of_o faith_n for_o justification_n can_v be_v in_o reformation_n or_o in_o any_o thing_n in_o the_o creature_n it_o must_v be_v in_o something_o above_o and_o without_o we_o and_o yet_o by_o faith_n wrought_v in_o we_o though_o without_o we_o i_o mean_v the_o rock_n christ_n and_o the_o foundation_n that_o be_v lay_v for_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o our_o sin_n in_o christ_n that_o
pardon_v sin_n yet_o it_o do_v not_o work_v thus_o viz._n you_o have_v sin_v and_o my_o law_n require_v such_o and_o such_o obedience_n to_o be_v perform_v on_o such_o term_n or_o else_o you_o must_v perish_v but_o i_o through_o my_o mercy_n will_v remit_v something_o of_o the_o rigour_n and_o strictness_n of_o the_o law_n and_o most_o people_n confess_v that_o by_o the_o strictness_n of_o the_o law_n they_o be_v condemn_v but_o they_o hope_v the_o mercy_n of_o god_n will_v grant_v some_o remission_n of_o the_o law_n as_o it_o be_v with_o man_n if_o all_o penal_a statute_n shall_v be_v execute_v it_o will_v be_v very_o hard_a but_o there_o be_v a_o chancery_n to_o abate_v something_o of_o the_o rigour_n and_o strictness_n of_o penal_a statute_n and_o thus_o man_n think_v to_o come_v to_o have_v pardon_n and_o deal_v with_o god_n after_o the_o manner_n of_o man_n you_o think_v the_o cry_n to_o god_n for_o mercy_n will_v abate_v something_o of_o the_o strictness_n and_o severity_n of_o the_o law_n but_o you_o mistake_v in_o take_v this_o way_n to_o get_v peace_n and_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n to_o look_v upon_o god_n mercy_n to_o lie_v in_o this_o to_o remit_v something_o of_o the_o strictness_n and_o severity_n of_o the_o law_n no_o but_o the_o work_n of_o god_n mercy_n lie_v in_o this_o to_o find_v out_o a_o surety_n for_o you_o and_o to_o transact_v the_o debt_n upon_o he_o further_o consider_v the_o work_n of_o god_n mercy_n in_o justification_n of_o a_o sinner_n when_o faith_n lay_v hold_v upon_o it_o faith_n must_v not_o lay_v hold_n upon_o it_o as_o a_o mere_a single_a act_n but_o look_v at_o all_o the_o concomitant_n of_o the_o work_n of_o god_n grace_n in_o make_v way_n for_o the_o justification_n of_o a_o sinner_n the_o mercy_n of_o god_n work_v and_o justification_n of_o thy_o soul_n it_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o for_o faith_n to_o look_v upon_o god_n in_o this_o manner_n than_o to_o come_v in_o such_o a_o way_n as_o this_o god_n be_v save_v thy_o soul_n certain_o it_o will_v work_v so_o far_o as_o to_o take_v away_o the_o power_n of_o sin_n and_o let_v thou_o not_o live_v in_o the_o filth_n of_o thy_o sin_n many_o think_v god_n mercy_n will_v do_v great_a matter_n hereafter_o but_o nothing_o now_o in_o comparison_n of_o what_o he_o will_v do_v hereafter_o they_o think_v he_o will_v give_v they_o outward_a blessing_n now_o but_o keep_v spiritual_a thing_n till_o hereafter_o certain_o this_o be_v a_o infallible_a truth_n if_o god_n mercy_n work_v not_o so_o powerful_o here_o in_o this_o world_n as_o to_o bestow_v spiritual_a good_a thing_n on_o thou_o thou_o may_v be_v assure_v that_o it_o will_v never_o work_v so_o powerful_a on_o thou_o as_o to_o save_v thy_o soul_n in_o the_o world_n to_o come_v can_v it_o be_v think_v a_o prince_n pardon_v a_o malefactor_n that_o he_o shall_v not_o be_v hang_v and_o yet_o suffer_v he_o to_o lie_v in_o prison_n and_o rot_n in_o the_o dungeon_n this_o be_v but_o a_o poor_a pardon_n a_o half_a pardon_n to_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o gallow_n and_o rot_v in_o the_o prison_n certain_o whatever_o a_o prince_n may_v do_v god_n never_o pardon_v a_o sinner_n so_o to_o so_o man_n and_o woman_n by_o their_o sin_n run_v into_o debt_n with_o god_n and_o though_o god_n do_v not_o call_v for_o the_o debt_n present_o yet_o they_o be_v record_v in_o heaven_n it_o be_v as_o certain_a that_o every_o sin_n of_o any_o man_n or_o woman_n be_v set_v down_o in_o god_n debt-book_n as_o any_o debt_n you_o owe_v be_v set_v down_o in_o your_o creditor_n book_n and_o as_o certain_o must_v your_o debt_n be_v call_v for_o and_o satisfaction_n and_o payment_n make_v unto_o god_n for_o they_o as_o certain_a as_o any_o tradesman_n will_v call_v for_o payment_n of_o his_o debt_n now_o this_o be_v the_o work_n of_o justification_n between_o god_n and_o your_o soul_n if_o you_o will_v know_v the_o nature_n of_o it_o when_o jesus_n christ_n see_v a_o poor_a soul_n that_o god_n the_o father_n have_v give_v to_o he_o to_o save_v thus_o run_v into_o debt_n christ_n come_v and_o lay_v down_o a_o price_n before_o god_n the_o father_n to_o pay_v this_o debt_n and_o christ_n see_v condemnation_n to_o he_o for_o whosoever_o be_v in_o such_o a_o estate_n as_o have_v any_o sin_n unpardoned_a for_o that_o instant_n he_o be_v in_o the_o state_n of_o condemnation_n but_o there_o be_v lay_v in_o before_o although_o a_o act_n of_o faith_n be_v not_o renew_v in_o regard_n of_o that_o particular_a sin_n that_o be_v the_o point_n i_o will_v make_v good_a though_o it_o be_v true_a there_o be_v require_v as_o our_o duty_n a_o act_n of_o faith_n to_o lay_v hold_n on_o our_o pardon_n yea_o also_o it_o be_v require_v in_o respect_n of_o comfort_n too_o for_o we_o can_v have_v comfort_n of_o the_o pardon_n of_o a_o new_a sin_n commit_v except_o there_o be_v a_o renewal_a of_o a_o act_n of_o faith_n but_o yet_o this_o renewal_a of_o a_o act_n of_o faith_n though_o it_o be_v necessary_a because_o command_v and_o for_o our_o comfort_n yet_o no_o absolute_a necessity_n to_o free_v we_o from_o condemnation_n but_o be_v once_o justify_v by_o christ_n there_o be_v a_o pardon_n lay_v up_o so_o that_o upon_o any_o act_n of_o sin_n new_o commit_v this_o pardon_n be_v apply_v by_o god_n himself_o though_o we_o be_v not_o able_a by_o the_o renewal_a of_o a_o present_a act_n of_o faith_n to_o sue_v out_o pardon_n anew_o unto_o ourselves_o nay_o the_o truth_n be_v if_o this_o be_v not_o so_o there_o can_v be_v no_o instant_n of_o time_n wherein_o a_o believer_n be_v not_o in_o the_o state_n of_o condemnation_n for_o there_o be_v no_o instant_n of_o time_n wherein_o a_o believer_n do_v not_o some_o way_n or_o other_o sin_n against_o god_n further_n it_o be_v apparent_a and_o undeniable_a that_o there_o be_v not_o a_o necessity_n of_o renew_v a_o act_n of_o faith_n upon_o every_o sin_n commit_v for_o the_o pardon_n of_o it_o this_o argument_n can_v be_v deny_v because_o otherwise_o there_o must_v be_v a_o necessity_n of_o renew_v a_o act_n of_o faith_n after_o the_o last_o act_v a_o believer_n do_v for_o in_o the_o last_o action_n a_o believer_n do_v in_o this_o world_n there_o be_v some_o sin_n it_o now_o if_o there_o be_v some_o sin_n in_o the_o last_o act_n of_o all_o then_o there_o can_v be_v of_o necessity_n require_v another_o act_n for_o the_o apply_v of_o the_o pardon_n of_o that_o sin_n a_o believer_n do_v do_v in_o the_o very_a last_o act_n he_o do_v in_o this_o world_n those_o that_o hold_v a_o believer_n can_v final_o fall_v away_o yet_o say_v he_o may_v total_o many_o hold_n that_o if_o once_o a_o man_n be_v justify_v he_o can_v never_o go_v to_o hell_n but_o yet_o this_o they_o hold_v that_o he_o may_v so_o sin_v that_o he_o may_v be_v bring_v into_o a_o state_n of_o condemnation_n he_o may_v be_v bring_v into_o such_o a_o state_n that_o if_o he_o shall_v die_v at_o that_o present_a he_o shall_v perish_v but_o say_v they_o god_n do_v take_v care_n that_o he_o shall_v not_o die_v till_o there_o be_v a_o renew_n of_o a_o act_n of_o faith_n for_o pardon_n i_o answer_v there_o be_v nothing_o in_o scripture_n to_o prove_v there_o be_v not_o any_o instant_n of_o time_n wherein_o a_o believer_n may_v not_o die_v and_o yet_o if_o he_o do_v die_v he_o must_v then_o perish_v because_o a_o act_n of_o faith_n be_v not_o renew_v true_a say_v they_o further_o that_o all_o sin_n bring_v not_o into_o the_o state_n of_o condemnation_n there_o may_v be_v pardon_n of_o course_n for_o sin_n of_o infirmity_n but_o other_o sin_n that_o waste_v a_o man_n conscience_n there_o a_o believer_n be_v bring_v into_o the_o state_n of_o condemnation_n till_o there_o be_v a_o new_a act_n of_o faith_n renew_v for_o pardon_n i_o answer_v if_o any_o one_o sin_n bring_v a_o believer_n into_o the_o state_n of_o condemnation_n after_o conversion_n where_o shall_v we_o put_v the_o limit_n as_o to_o say_v if_o you_o go_v but_o thus_o far_o you_o be_v not_o in_o a_o state_n of_o condemnation_n but_o if_o you_o go_v a_o letter_n further_o you_o be_v god_n put_v no_o such_o limit_n in_o scripture_n but_o all_o sin_n in_o its_o own_o nature_n bring_v into_o a_o state_n of_o condemnation_n and_o yet_o no_o sin_n bring_v a_o believer_n into_o the_o state_n of_o condemnation_n therefore_o this_o be_v a_o great_a mystery_n of_o god_n in_o the_o pardon_v of_o sin_n when_o god_n pardon_v the_o sin_n of_o a_o believer_n he_o do_v not_o only_o pardon_v what_o he_o have_v do_v at_o present_a but_o for_o what_o he_o shall_v do_v he_o lay_v in_o a_o pardon_n and_o christ_n have_v purchase_v it_o it_o for_o we_o for_o all_o sin_n yet_o to_o come_v it_o be_v like_o a_o son_n run_v into_o arrear_n his_o father_n come_v and_o pay_v his_o debt_n but_o because_o he_o see_v his_o son_n will_v run_v further_o into_o arrear_n he_o lay_v in_o so_o much_o as_o will_v pay_v all_o for_o time_n to_o come_v that_o if_o he_o run_v into_o arrear_n he_o shall_v not_o be_v cast_v into_o prison_n just_o so_o it_o be_v with_o god_n god_n pardon_v all_o our_o sin_n at_o first_o and_o then_o he_o lay_v up_o a_o pardon_n that_o if_o we_o run_v into_o arrear_n we_o shall_v not_o lie_v in_o prison_n to_o be_v condemn_v and_o suffer_v for_o they_o this_o be_v a_o great_a mystery_n and_o they_o that_o teach_v otherwise_o rob_v the_o people_n of_o god_n of_o abundance_n of_o comfort_n that_o otherwise_o they_o may_v have_v be_v this_o truth_n make_v clear_o know_v unto_o they_o object_n be_v not_o this_o doctrine_n a_o doctrine_n of_o liberty_n if_o they_o have_v knowledge_n that_o god_n when_o he_o pardon_v for_o what_o sin_n be_v past_a and_o lay_v in_o a_o pardon_n for_o what_o sin_n be_v yet_o to_o come_v may_v not_o people_n hence_o take_v liberty_n to_o sin_n may_v not_o they_o say_v that_o though_o they_o do_v sin_n yet_o there_o be_v a_o pardon_n lay_v in_o before_o hand_n for_o they_o answ_n here_o thou_o speak_v as_o one_o that_o understand_v not_o
though_o they_o be_v never_o so_o many_o and_o great_a but_o also_o such_o a_o covenant_n upon_o my_o come_n in_o that_o god_n will_v discharge_v all_o sin_n that_o shall_v be_v commit_v for_o time_n to_o come_v though_o i_o be_v ready_a to_o fall_v into_o sin_n daily_o yet_o i_o shall_v not_o come_v into_o condemnation_n o_o what_o will_v so_o infinite_o engage_v a_o gracious_a and_o ingenious_a spirit_n as_o this_o do_v sure_o nothing_o like_o this_o now_o if_o this_o be_v true_a that_o man_n that_o be_v forgive_v be_v thus_o forgive_v not_o only_o for_o time_n past_a but_o also_o for_o time_n to_o come_v then_o bless_v be_v the_o man_n who_o transgression_n be_v forgive_v and_o who_o iniquity_n be_v pardon_v of_o the_o ten_o mystery_n god_n pardon_v a_o sinner_n not_o because_o he_o be_v but_o that_o he_o may_v be_v change_v 10._o the_o ten_o mystery_n be_v this_o for_o i_o will_v endeavour_v to_o show_v you_o what_o a_o mighty_a work_n pardon_v of_o sin_n be_v and_o raise_v up_o your_o heart_n to_o have_v high_a thought_n of_o it_o than_o ever_o you_o have_v before_o god_n do_v not_o pardon_v because_o a_o sinner_n have_v his_o heart_n and_o nature_n change_v but_o that_o he_o may_v be_v change_v and_o thus_o the_o pardon_n of_o god_n differ_v from_o all_o other_o pardon_n a_o prince_n pardon_v a_o malefactor_n or_o a_o father_n a_o child_n but_o upon_o what_o term_n a_o prince_n expect_v his_o subject_n shall_v be_v change_v as_o far_o as_o he_o can_v discern_v and_o a_o father_n though_o never_o so_o tender_a will_v not_o pardon_v a_o child_n unless_o he_o come_v in_o and_o manifest_a a_o change_n of_o his_o disobedient_a spirit_n and_o then_o he_o pardon_v god_n do_v not_o pardon_v because_o we_o be_v change_v but_o that_o we_o may_v be_v change_v his_o pardon_n come_v first_o rom._n 4.5_o a_o very_a strange_a place_n for_o this_o and_o may_v encourage_v any_o poor_a soul_n that_o be_v trouble_v for_o sin_n to_o come_v in_o and_o lie_v hold_v upon_o god_n mercy_n in_o christ_n but_o to_o he_o that_o work_v not_o but_o believe_v on_o he_o that_o justify_v the_o ungodly_a his_o faith_n be_v count_v unto_o he_o for_o righteousness_n mark_v when_o god_n come_v to_o justify_v a_o sinner_n he_o look_v upon_o he_o as_o ungodly_a he_o stay_v not_o till_o the_o sinner_n be_v make_v godly_a and_o then_o justify_v he_o as_o a_o prince_n stay_v till_o a_o malefactor_n heart_n be_v change_v and_o he_o become_v a_o loyal_a subject_n and_o then_o pardon_v he_o god_n be_v not_o so_o in_o justify_v soul_n he_o justify_v the_o ungodly_a one_o that_o be_v ungodly_a come_n to_o he_o he_o justify_v this_o be_v a_o mighty_a argument_n i_o name_v it_o for_o this_o end_n because_o i_o will_v teach_v people_n that_o notwithstanding_o any_o sin_n or_o guilt_n that_o lie_v upon_o their_o spirit_n yet_o they_o have_v a_o liberty_n to_o come_v in_o and_o lie_v hold_v upon_o christ_n for_o justification_n do_v not_o say_v i_o be_o ungodly_a i_o be_o a_o great_a sinner_n and_o have_v a_o vile_a heart_n and_o i_o find_v not_o my_o nature_n change_v and_o therefore_o how_o dare_v i_o lie_v hold_v upon_o god_n grace_n for_o mercy_n and_o pardon_v yea_o thou_o may_v because_o god_n justify_v the_o ungodly_a though_o thy_o nature_n be_v not_o change_v and_o sanctify_a as_o thou_o say_v take_v it_o thus_o thou_o must_v lay_v hold_v of_o god_n grace_n for_o justification_n that_o thou_o may_v be_v sanctify_v not_o only_o pardon_v but_o sanctify_v come_v but_o thus_o with_o thy_o heart_n affect_v to_o close_a with_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n that_o thou_o may_v be_v sanctify_v as_o well_o as_o pardon_v though_o for_o the_o present_a thou_o feel_v not_o any_o sanctification_n yet_o thou_o may_v have_v right_a to_o lay_v hold_n upon_o christ_n as_o well_o as_o any_o one_o whatsoever_o object_n will_v not_o this_o be_v presumption_n for_o a_o sinner_n thus_o to_o lay_v hold_n on_o christ_n answ_n if_o faith_n be_v mere_o a_o persuasion_n that_o christ_n die_v for_o they_o or_o as_o many_o man_n think_v thus_o well_o god_n be_v merciful_a and_o he_o will_v pardon_v i_o christ_n have_v die_v there_o may_v be_v presumption_n in_o lay_v hold_n on_o christ_n but_o now_o as_o justification_n be_v a_o great_a mystery_n so_o be_v faith_n and_o faith_n be_v a_o mighty_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o the_o soul_n that_o cause_v the_o soul_n to_o roll_n and_o cast_v itself_o on_o the_o free_a grace_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n and_o venture_v itself_o and_o all_o its_o hope_n for_o good_a and_o happiness_n on_o he_o there_o be_v not_o only_o a_o come_n to_o christ_n for_o pardon_n but_o for_o grace_n holiness_n light_n good_a and_o happiness_n here_o and_o for_o whatever_o it_o do_v expect_v hereafter_o it_o look_v for_o all_o from_o he_o now_o when_o there_o be_v such_o a_o work_n of_o god_n upon_o the_o soul_n in_o cast_v itself_o on_o god_n in_o christ_n though_o there_o be_v nothing_o at_o present_a but_o ungodliness_n in_o he_o appear_v yet_o such_o a_o one_o may_v and_o have_v right_a to_o come_v unto_o god_n for_o pardon_n for_o god_n justify_v the_o ungodly_a rom._n 5.6_o christ_n die_v for_o the_o ungodly_a and_o vers_fw-la 10._o if_o when_o we_o be_v enemy_n we_o be_v reconcile_v by_o the_o death_n of_o his_o son_n when_o we_o be_v enemy_n and_o have_v base_a heart_n full_a of_o enmity_n against_o god_n yet_o than_o christ_n die_v to_o reconcile_v we_o unto_o god_n thou_o may_v then_o venture_v to_o come_v to_o he_o for_o pardon_n and_o it_o be_v no_o presumption_n though_o thou_o sinner_n be_v a_o enemy_n unto_o he_o of_o the_o eleven_o mystery_n god_n himself_o purchase_v the_o pardon_n 11._o when_o god_n pardon_v a_o sinner_n he_o himself_o be_v fain_o to_o purchase_v the_o pardon_n and_o this_o be_v different_a from_o the_o manner_n of_o pardon_n among_o man_n a_o prince_n pardon_v a_o malefactor_n but_o the_o prince_n himself_o do_v not_o purchase_v the_o pardon_n and_o if_o one_o have_v offend_v you_o you_o pardon_v the_o offender_n but_o you_o that_o be_v offend_v do_v not_o purchase_v a_o pardon_n for_o the_o offender_n possible_a some_o friend_n may_v come_v and_o purchase_v a_o pardon_n at_o the_o king_n hand_n for_o a_o offender_n but_o the_o king_n himself_o do_v not_o purchase_v it_o yet_o thus_o it_o be_v with_o god_n god_n do_v not_o pardon_v any_o one_o sin_n but_o it_o cost_v god_n himself_o dear_a before_o he_o get_v it_o therefore_o it_o be_v not_o such_o a_o slight_a thing_n to_o be_v pardon_v you_o must_v not_o think_v to_o go_v to_o god_n and_o cry_n mercy_n and_o that_o he_o will_v pardon_v 〈◊〉_d thus_o in_o a_o natural_a way_n god_n never_o pardon_v sin_n but_o it_o cost_v god_n dear_a yea_o that_o which_o be_v more_o worth_a than_o all_o the_o world_n if_o that_o can_v have_v do_v it_o god_n will_v rather_o have_v dissolve_v heaven_n and_o earth_n than_o have_v give_v that_o that_o he_o do_v give_v what_o be_v that_o it_o be_v the_o blood_n of_o his_o own_o son_n god_n give_v he_o up_o to_o death_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o mankind_n and_o for_o the_o purchase_n a_o pardon_n for_o man_n but_o some_o may_v say_v what_o need_n god_n have_v purchase_v a_o pardon_n for_o man_n can_v he_o not_o have_v forgive_v he_o by_o his_o absolute_a prerogative_n i_o answer_v there_o be_v need_v because_o of_o the_o satisfaction_n of_o justice_n he_o do_v purchase_v it_o out_o of_o the_o hand_n of_o justice_n god_n be_v fain_o to_o lay_v down_o a_o price_n to_o justice_n before_o he_o himself_o can_v pardon_v one_o sin_n justice_n must_v be_v satisfy_v before_o he_o can_v give_v out_o one_o pardon_n well_o take_v all_o these_o together_o christ_n must_v be_v our_o surety_n take_v the_o debt_n upon_o himself_o and_o suffer_v as_o much_o punishment_n as_o we_o shall_v have_v do_v in_o hell_n to_o all_o eternity_n and_o to_o make_v the_o soul_n stand_v righteous_a before_o god_n yet_o this_o righteousness_n to_o be_v in_o another_o yea_o a_o near_a union_n be_v make_v between_o christ_n and_o the_o soul_n and_o yet_o further_o it_o be_v by_o faith_n and_o yet_o boast_v be_v exclude_v and_o god_n be_v infinite_o merciful_a and_o yet_o infinite_o just_a and_o when_o he_o pardon_v one_o sin_n he_o lay_v in_o a_o pardon_n for_o all_o
sin_n for_o time_n to_o come_v justify_v the_o ungodly_a pardon_v sin_n yet_o purchase_v the_o pardon_n these_o eleven_o meditation_n about_o the_o pardon_n of_o sin_n make_v it_o appear_v to_o be_v a_o wonderful_a work_n of_o god_n put_v these_o together_o and_o then_o the_o result_n according_a to_o the_o point_n will_v be_v clear_a and_o full_a that_o bless_a be_v that_o man_n who_o sin_n be_v forgive_v and_o sure_o if_o there_o be_v such_o a_o mysterious_a and_o glorious_a work_n of_o god_n in_o pardon_v sin_n that_o man_n for_o who_o god_n shall_v work_v such_o a_o glorious_a work_n be_v a_o bless_a man_n indeed_o and_o now_o have_v do_v with_o this_o argument_n of_o the_o great_a mystery_n of_o godliness_n in_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n i_o proceed_v to_o another_o and_o it_o be_v this_o chap._n iu._n that_o pardon_n of_o sin_n not_o only_o be_v a_o mercy_n in_o itself_o but_o the_o foundation_n of_o many_o other_o mercy_n argument_n pardon_v of_o sin_n make_v a_o mâ—â—_n bless_v why_o because_o it_o be_v the_o foundation_n of_o abundance_n of_o other_o mercy_n it_o be_v a_o inlet_n to_o many_o other_o mercy_n therefore_o a_o great_a mercy_n it_o be_v a_o lead_a mercy_n it_o be_v as_o the_o queen_n of_o mercy_n that_o have_v a_o great_a and_o glorious_a train_n of_o other_o mercy_n attend_v on_o she_o indeed_o it_o be_v the_o very_a foundation_n of_o all_o the_o mercy_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n it_o be_v the_o principal_a mercy_n and_o the_o very_a foundation_n of_o all_o the_o mercy_n that_o be_v in_o the_o covenant_n and_o the_o inlet_n and_o open_n to_o they_o all_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n be_v a_o rich_a treasury_n have_v abundant_a store_n of_o mercy_n in_o it_o and_o this_o open_v to_o they_o all_o the_o current_n of_o all_o god_n mercy_n be_v stop_v by_o man_n sin_n though_o god_n have_v a_o infinite_a ocean_n of_o mercy_n yet_o the_o source_n and_o vent_n of_o all_o god_n mercy_n be_v stop_v now_o when_o god_n pardon_v sin_n he_o take_v away_o the_o stop_n and_o open_v the_o sluice_n that_o his_o infinite_a grace_n and_o goodness_n may_v flow_v forth_o plentiful_o and_o sweet_o to_o the_o soul_n body_n and_o state_n yea_o to_o all_o that_o belong_v to_o a_o believer_n you_o may_v conceive_v god_n mercy_n to_o be_v as_o a_o infinite_a stream_n of_o goodness_n run_v with_o a_o full_a current_n towards_o his_o creature_n for_o god_n delight_v in_o the_o communication_n of_o himself_o to_o his_o creature_n but_o now_o man_n sin_n make_v a_o dam_n and_o stop_v the_o pipe_n that_o not_o one_o drop_n of_o mercy_n can_v come_v forth_o not_o a_o drop_n of_o all_o that_o mercy_n that_o in_o the_o eternal_a purpose_n of_o god_n he_o have_v appoint_v in_o time_n shall_v come_v forth_o to_o such_o and_o such_o a_o poor_a creature_n but_o when_o he_o come_v to_o pardon_n and_o justification_n he_o pull_v out_o the_o plug_n and_o pull_v up_o the_o floodgate_n and_o sluice_n and_o then_o mercy_n come_v flow_v in_o amain_o when_o sin_n be_v pardon_v than_o the_o full_a stream_n of_o all_o the_o mercy_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n come_v flow_v into_o the_o soul_n well_o then_o if_o it_o be_v thus_o that_o pardon_n of_o sin_n be_v a_o inlet_n to_o other_o mercy_n then_o he_o that_o have_v his_o sin_n pardon_v be_v a_o very_a bless_a man_n i_o shall_v open_v this_o that_o pardon_v of_o sin_n be_v the_o foundation_n to_o and_o open_v the_o sluice_n to_o let_v in_o all_o other_o mercy_n jer._n 31.31_o behold_v the_o day_n come_v that_o i_o will_v make_v a_o new_a covenant_n with_o the_o house_n of_o israel_n and_o the_o house_n of_o judah_n here_o god_n open_v his_o goodness_n and_o tell_v they_o he_o will_v make_v a_o new_a covenant_n not_o like_o that_o he_o make_v with_o their_o father_n vers_fw-la 32._o but_o this_o shall_v be_v the_o covenant_n vers_fw-la 33._o and_o he_o instance_n in_o some_o particular_n i_o will_v put_v my_o law_n into_o their_o they_o shall_v all_o know_v i_o etc._n etc._n but_o what_o be_v the_o foundation_n of_o all_o this_o at_o the_o end_n of_o the_o 34._o for_o i_o will_v forgive_v their_o iniquity_n and_o remember_v their_o sin_n no_o more_o i_o will_v make_v a_o new_a covenant_n with_o they_o and_o put_v my_o law_n into_o their_o inward_a part_n and_o they_o shall_v all_o know_v i_o i_o will_v come_v in_o with_o all_o my_o mercy_n and_o blessing_n illumination_n and_o sanctification_n he_o mention_n these_o instead_o of_o the_o rest_n as_o in_o a_o grant_n of_o great_a thing_n some_o particular_n be_v mention_v but_o then_o he_o come_v in_o with_o a_o general_a for_o i_o will_v forgive_v their_o iniquity_n and_o remember_v their_o sin_n no_o more_o as_o if_o it_o shall_v be_v say_v why_o lord_n main_a thing_n they_o shall_v lay_v the_o weight_n of_o obtain_v peace_n of_o god_n upon_o it_o be_v the_o work_n of_o faith_n apply_v the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n for_o pardon_n rather_o than_o any_o work_n of_o humiliation_n or_o sanctification_n by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n yet_o both_o these_o be_v sweet_a and_o comfortable_a when_o we_o find_v the_o bottom_n and_o main_a foundation_n of_o all_o our_o peace_n on_o the_o free_a grace_n of_o god_n pardon_v our_o sin_n and_o justify_v of_o we_o through_o faith_n in_o christ_n cod_n do_v not_o say_v you_o that_o be_v great_a sinner_n stay_v till_o you_o be_v humble_v and_o be_v bring_v to_o hate_v sin_n and_o you_o shall_v have_v peace_n with_o god_n no_o you_o may_v be_v much_o trouble_v for_o sin_n and_o may_v leave_v it_o and_o reform_v in_o many_o thing_n and_o live_v better_a life_n than_o before_o and_o yet_o your_o peace_n not_o make_v up_o with_o god_n how_o then_o shall_v it_o be_v thus_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n look_v up_o to_o the_o free_a grace_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n for_o pardon_n of_o sin_n we_o come_v to_o have_v peace_n with_o god_n and_o this_o be_v a_o great_a privilege_n but_o if_o you_o consider_v on_o the_o other_o side_n a_o creature_n not_o reconcile_v can_v look_v upon_o the_o infinite_a creator_n without_o terror_n and_o shake_n and_o tremble_n of_o spirit_n he_o can_v have_v any_o thought_n of_o god_n but_o he_o think_v of_o he_o as_o his_o enemy_n and_o that_o all_o the_o excellency_n of_o god_n be_v work_v misery_n and_o ruin_n to_o he_o this_o be_v
