be_v preach_v to_o they_o that_o be_v as_o yet_o ignorant_a of_o christ_n not_o in_o gluttony_n and_o drunkenness_n neither_o in_o chamber_v and_o wantonness_n nor_o in_o strife_n and_o envy_v here_o he_o rehearse_v the_o work_n of_o darkness_n by_o name_n one_o of_o which_o he_o name_v also_o before_o to_o wit_n sleep_n according_a to_o that_o say_v 1._o thessaly_n 5_o let_v we_o not_o sleep_v as_o do_v other_o but_o let_v we_o watch_v and_o be_v sober_a not_o that_o he_o forbid_v natural_a sleep_n but_o spiritual_a which_o be_v infidelity_n whereof_o those_o work_n of_o the_o flesh_n proceed_v howbeit_o natural_a sleep_n also_o be_v a_o work_n of_o darkness_n if_o it_o be_v use_v for_o pleasure_n and_o through_o immoderate_a fill_n of_o the_o belly_n rest_n paul_n by_o six_o which_o he_o here_o rehearse_v into_o two_o side_n the_o right_a and_o the_o left_a on_o the_o right_a side_n these_o four_o fight_n with_o the_o spirit_n gluttony_n drunkenness_n chamber_v and_o wantonness_n on_o the_o left_a side_n forasmuch_o as_o the_o left_a side_n in_o the_o scripture_n signify_v adversity_n those_o thing_n which_o proceed_v from_o thence_o do_v fight_v as_o be_v wrath_n the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n shall_v be_v save_v but_o how_o shall_v they_o call_v on_o he_o in_o who_o they_o have_v not_o believe_v and_o how_o shall_v they_o believe_v in_o he_o of_o who_o they_o have_v not_o hear_v and_o how_o shall_v they_o hear_v without_o a_o preacher_n and_o how_o shall_v they_o preach_v except_o they_o be_v send_v therefore_o christ_n teach_v we_o to_o pray_v the_o lord_n of_o the_o harvest_n that_o he_o will_v send_v forth_o labourer_n into_o his_o harvest_n that_o be_v sincere_a preacher_n when_o we_o hear_v these_o preach_v the_o true_a word_n of_o god_n we_o may_v believe_v which_o faith_n justifi_v a_o man_n and_o make_v he_o godly_a in_o deed_n that_o he_o now_o call_v upon_o god_n in_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o son_n and_o work_v nothing_o but_o that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o thus_o become_v a_o man_n save_v which_o be_v no_o other_o thing_n then_o if_o i_o say_v he_o that_o believe_v shall_v be_v save_v again_o he_o that_o work_v without_o unto_o honesty_n and_o by_o what_o mean_v we_o may_v attain_v unto_o it_o they_o answer_v that_o we_o must_v fast_o pray_v frequent_a temple_n avoid_v sin_n etc._n etc._n holiness_n hypocritical_a &_o counterfeit_a holiness_n hereupon_o one_o become_v a_o charterhouse_n monk_n a_o other_o choose_v some_o other_o order_n of_o monk_n a_o other_o be_v consecrate_v a_o priest_n some_o torment_n their_o flesh_n by_o wear_v hear_v cloth_n other_o scourge_n their_o body_n with_o whip_n other_o afflict_v themselves_o after_o other_o sort_n but_o these_o be_v even_o of_o cain_n brood_n &_o their_o work_n be_v no_o whit_n better_o than_o the_o work_n of_o cain_n for_o the_o man_n himself_o continue_v the_o same_o that_o he_o be_v before_o ungodly_a and_o without_o all_o justification_n there_o be_v a_o certain_a change_n make_v only_o of_o outward_a work_n of_o apparel_n of_o place_n etc._n etc._n neither_o be_v these_o any_o other_o they_o very_a ape_n of_o saint_n for_o they_o do_v preposterous_o imitate_v the_o manner_n &_o work_n of_o saint_n when_o as_o they_o themselves_o be_v nothing_o less_o they_o saint_n they_o scarce_o think_v of_o faith_n they_o presume_v only_o of_o such_o work_n as_o seem_v good_a unto_o themselves_o think_v by_o they_o to_o come_v unto_o heaven_n of_o who_o christ_n say_v enter_v in_o at_o the_o straight_a gate_n for_o i_o say_v unto_o you_o many_o seek_v to_o enter_v in_o at_o it_o &_o can_v not_o why_o be_v this_o because_o they_o know_v not_o what_o this_o narrow_a gate_n be_v for_o it_o be_v faith_n which_o do_v altogether_o annihilate_v or_o make_v a_o man_n nothing_o in_o his_o own_o eye_n &_o require_v that_o he_o put_v no_o trust_n in_o any_o of_o his_o own_o work_n but_o that_o he_o lean_v only_o to_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n &_o be_v prepare_v for_o it_o to_o leave_v &_o suffer_v all_o thing_n but_o those_o holy_a one_o of_o cain_n brood_n think_v their_o good_a work_n to_o be_v the_o narrow_a gate_n &_o be_v not_o therefore_o extenuate_v or_o make_v less_o whereby_o they_o may_v enter_v they_o do_v not_o leave_v confidence_n in_o their_o work_n but_o gather_v they_o together_o in_o great_a cowl_n they_o hang_v they_o about_o they_o and_o so_o go_v about_o to_o enter_v in_o be_v burden_v and_o as_o it_o be_v swell_v big_a which_o be_v as_o possible_a for_o they_o as_o for_o a_o camel_n with_o his_o bounched_a they_o for_o turk_n and_o heathen_a who_o it_o behove_v now_o first_o to_o learn_v faith_n be_v there_o such_o a_o company_n of_o priest_n monk_n and_o nun_n &_o be_v not_o faith_n know_v who_o know_v not_o what_o he_o ought_v to_o believe_v even_o manifest_a sinner_n know_v that_o and_o be_v after_o this_o sort_n animate_v and_o stir_v up_o they_o think_v that_o they_o be_v abundant_o endue_v with_o faith_n and_o that_o the_o rest_n be_v now_o to_o be_v finish_v &_o make_v perfect_a by_o work_n whereupon_o they_o make_v too_o small_a &_o slender_a account_n of_o faith_n as_o i_o have_v say_v because_o they_o be_v ignorant_a both_o what_o faith_n be_v &_o that_o it_o alone_o do_v justify_v they_o call_v it_o faith_n when_o they_o believe_v those_o thing_n which_o they_o have_v hear_v of_o christ_n which_o kind_n of_o faith_n the_o devil_n also_o have_v &_o yet_o be_v nothing_o therefore_o justify_v but_o this_o deserve_v to_o be_v call_v rather_o a_o opinion_n of_o man_n than_o faith_n for_o as_o we_o do_v oftentimes_o admonish_v it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a that_o thou_o may_v worthy_o be_v call_v a_o christian_a to_o believe_v those_o thing_n to_o be_v true_a which_o be_v preach_v of_o christ_n which_o kind_n of_o faith_n they_o of_o cain_n brood_n also_o have_v faith_n a_o true_a faith_n but_o thou_o must_v also_o nothing_o doubt_n that_o thou_o be_v of_o the_o number_n of_o they_o unto_o who_o all_o those_o benefit_n of_o christ_n be_v give_v &_o exhibit_v which_o he_o that_o believe_v must_v plain_o confess_v that_o he_o be_v holy_a godly_a righteous_a the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o certain_a of_o salvation_n &_o that_o by_o no_o merit_n of_o his_o own_o but_o by_o the_o only_a mercy_n of_o god_n pour_v forth_o upon_o he_o for_o christ_n sake_n which_o he_o beleeeve_v to_o be_v so_o rich_a and_o plentiful_a as_o it_o be_v in_o deed_n that_o although_o he_o be_v as_o it_o be_v drown_v in_o sin_n he_o be_v notwithstanding_o thereby_o make_v it_o in_o his_o life_n we_o have_v bring_v the_o matter_n so_o far_o that_o the_o doctrine_n and_o trifle_n of_o satan_n be_v some_o what_o abate_v and_o lay_v aside_o that_o we_o do_v now_o see_v and_o know_v what_o be_v just_a and_o what_o unjust_a that_o we_o must_v have_v to_o do_v with_o god_n by_o only_a faith_n and_o by_o work_n with_o our_o neighbour_n but_o we_o can_v not_o bring_v it_o to_o this_o pass_n that_o love_n may_v begin_v and_o do_v that_o to_o a_o other_o which_o god_n have_v do_v unto_o we_o as_o we_o ourselves_o complain_v that_o many_o of_o we_o be_v become_v worse_o than_o they_o be_v before_o as_o therefore_o this_o servant_n refuse_v to_o remit_v his_o neighbour_n the_o debt_n and_o deal_v extreme_o with_o he_o so_o also_o do_v we_o say_v it_o be_v not_o meet_v that_o i_o shall_v give_v that_o that_o be_v i_o to_o a_o other_o neglect_v my_o own_o right_n if_o this_o man_n have_v provoke_v i_o to_o anger_n it_o be_v his_o duty_n to_o pacify_v i_o &_o to_o labour_v by_o entreaty_n to_o put_v away_o my_o anger_n true_o thus_o the_o world_n teach_v and_o do_v for_o it_o affirm_v it_o to_o be_v just_a and_o right_o neither_o will_v any_o prince_n or_o magistrate_n enforce_v thou_o to_o give_v that_o which_o be_v thou_o to_o a_o other_o but_o will_v suffer_v thou_o to_o do_v what_o please_v thou_o with_o thy_o own_o good_n the_o magistrate_n in_o deed_n restrayn_v thou_o from_o do_v what_o thou_o listen_v with_o the_o good_a of_o a_o other_o but_o he_o constrain_v thou_o not_o to_o give_v thy_o own_o substance_n to_o a_o other_o for_o that_o be_v against_o the_o law_n of_o nation_n which_o even_o reason_n pronounce_v it_o give_v to_o every_o one_o that_o which_o be_v his_o own_o wherefore_o he_o do_v not_o unequal_o or_o unjust_o which_o use_v his_o own_o thing_n at_o his_o will_n &_o take_v not_o away_o wrongful_o the_o good_n of_o a_o other_o but_o what_o do_v the_o gospel_n say_v if_o god_n also_o have_v hold_v his_o own_o right_n and_o say_v i_o do_v well_o in_o that_o i_o punish_v offender_n and_o take_v that_o which_o be_v my_o own_o who_o shall_v let_v i_o what_o i_o pray_v you_o shall_v become_v of_o all_o we_o god_n by_o he_o we_o be_v instruct_v in_o all_o truth_n and_o consequent_o by_o he_o we_o obtain_v divine_a and_o heavenly_a wisdom_n here_o also_o shall_v he_o learn_v that_o christ_n be_v make_v under_o the_o law_n that_o he_o may_v redeem_v they_o which_o be_v in_o bondage_n under_o the_o law_n &_o of_o servile_a bondman_n make_v they_o free_a son_n even_o the_o child_n of_o god_n furthermore_o if_o grief_n and_o heaviness_n come_v upon_o he_o he_o be_v here_o teach_v where_o true_a joy_n may_v be_v have_v even_o in_o christ_n jesus_n alone_o that_o in_o he_o only_o he_o may_v find_v sure_a comfort_n sovereign_a medicine_n present_a remedy_n true_a joy_n of_o heart_n and_o quietness_n of_o conscience_n final_o whereas_o we_o be_v synnefull_a and_o have_v by_o our_o sin_n and_o with_o all_o person_n for_o the_o lord_n and_o master_n hold_v they_o so_o hardly_o and_o straight_o that_o they_o can_v not_o get_v much_o thereby_o if_o they_o will_v deal_v right_o and_o just_o and_o oppress_v no_o man_n with_o unjust_a exaction_n whereupon_o they_o have_v a_o very_a evell_a report_n abroad_o that_o they_o be_v most_o unjust_a exactor_n and_o endue_v with_o small_a for_o the_o conscience_n rest_v in_o this_o article_n of_o our_o christian_a faith_n i_o believe_v in_o jesus_n christ_n my_o lord_n which_o suffer_v die_v &_o be_v bury_v for_o i_o etc._n etc._n conscience_n &_o therefore_o let_v i_o alone_o &_o prate_v nothing_o of_o they_o for_o here_o i_o will_v vouchsafe_v to_o hear_v neither_o moses_n nor_o the_o pharisee_n but_o christ_n alone_o do_v obtain_v place_n to_o reign_v here_o i_o will_v like_v unto_o marie_n sit_v at_o his_o foot_n to_o hear_v his_o word_n but_o let_v martha_n carry_v abroad_o and_o busy_v herself_o in_o the_o kitchen_n bid_v the_o pharisee_n and_o moses_n with_o his_o table_n all_o lawyer_n with_o their_o book_n all_o man_n with_o their_o work_n hold_v their_o peace_n and_o give_v place_n no_o law_n have_v then_o this_o be_v put_v quite_o out_o of_o man_n mind_n for_o man_n be_v teach_v by_o their_o work_n to_o save_v themselves_o from_o purgatory_n or_o at_o the_o least_o to_o deliver_v themselves_o out_o from_o thence_o as_o though_o salvation_n be_v not_o yet_o give_v we_o and_o it_o be_v necessary_a to_o come_v unto_o it_o by_o other_o mean_n then_o by_o faith_n alone_o which_o how_o it_o disagree_v with_o the_o scripture_n and_o a_o christian_a life_n there_o be_v no_o man_n that_o do_v not_o see_v but_o he_o that_o see_v nothing_o in_o the_o scripture_n for_o thus_o the_o holy_a scripture_n do_v teach_v every_o where_n that_o who_o soever_o do_v not_o receive_v salvation_n by_o mere_a grace_n through_o faith_n before_o all_o work_n he_o shall_v never_o be_v partaker_n thereof_o and_o of_o man_n whereby_o the_o riches_n of_o baptism_n and_o faith_n be_v have_v in_o no_o reputation_n and_o they_o at_o the_o last_o of_o christian_n become_v heathen_a o_o most_o pernicious_a abomination_n christian_n shall_v be_v teach_v as_o christ_n and_o paul_n teach_v they_o that_o after_o baptism_n and_o absolution_n from_o sin_n they_o shall_v so_o live_v that_o they_o shall_v be_v ready_a every_o hour_n to_o receive_v death_n with_o desire_n look_v for_o the_o revelation_n of_o salvation_n already_o receive_v now_o by_o the_o opinion_n of_o purgatory_n they_o be_v make_v glass_n which_o resemble_v the_o colour_n of_o the_o clear_a glass_n and_o yet_o in_o deed_n be_v not_o of_o that_o colour_n they_o think_v that_o god_n will_v regard_v they_o when_o they_o live_v so_o before_o man_n as_o it_o seem_v good_a to_o their_o obscure_a opinion_n but_o if_o god_n be_v of_o that_o opinion_n he_o may_v then_o have_v well_o keep_v still_o christ_n and_o the_o gospel_n for_o what_o need_n or_o necessity_n shall_v move_v he_o to_o send_v christ_n from_o heaven_n who_o shall_v purchase_v that_o unto_o we_o with_o his_o precious_a blood_n which_o we_o ourselves_o have_v before_o with_o we_o he_o sure_o shall_v be_v the_o foolish_a of_o all_o man_n which_o will_v pour_v forth_o a_o precious_a treasure_n which_o no_o man_n need_v thus_o thou_o see_v how_o hate_v the_o law_n that_o be_v good_a who_o will_v deny_v it_o to_o be_v most_o evil_a sure_o it_o
be_v a_o sin_n to_o be_v against_o the_o law_n which_o be_v very_o good_a thus_o therefore_o sin_n be_v know_v by_o the_o law_n according_a as_o paul_n teach_v forasmuch_o as_o we_o learn_v thereby_o shall_v then_o have_v and_o possess_v it_o by_o the_o covenant_n of_o the_o father_n confirm_v by_o christ_n &_o reveal_v publish_v and_o as_o it_o be_v deliver_v into_o their_o hand_n by_o the_o gospel_n through_o the_o only_a grace_n and_o mercy_n of_o the_o father_n have_v the_o faithful_a before_o christ_n come_n have_v the_o same_o covenant_n which_o we_o have_v this_o covenant_n both_o death_n the_o devil_n and_o may_v challenge_v to_o myself_o all_o his_o work_n even_o as_o if_o they_o be_v my_o own_o and_o i_o myself_o have_v do_v they_o so_o that_o i_o believe_v in_o christ_n accuse_v thou_o that_o thou_o do_v not_o observe_v it_o send_v it_o unto_o christ_n and_o say_v there_o be_v that_o man_n which_o have_v fulfil_v the_o law_n to_o he_o i_o cleave_v he_o have_v death_n creep_v upon_o thou_o and_o attempt_v to_o devour_v thou_o say_v unto_o it_o good_a mistress_n death_n do_v thou_o know_v this_o man_n come_v and_o bite_v out_o his_o tooth_n have_v thou_o forget_v how_o little_a thy_o bite_v prevayl_v with_o he_o once_o go_v too_o if_o it_o be_v a_o pleasure_n unto_o thou_o encounter_n with_o he_o again_o thou_o have_v persuade_v thyself_o that_o thou_o shall_v have_v prevayl_v somewhat_o against_o he_o when_o he_o do_v hang_v between_o two_o thief_n &_o die_v a_o ignominious_a death_n which_o be_v count_v curse_v both_o before_o god_n and_o the_o world_n but_o what_o do_v thou_o gain_v thereby_o thou_o do_v bite_v in_o deed_n but_o it_o turn_v worst_a to_o thyself_o i_o pertain_v to_o this_o man_n i_o be_o he_o and_o he_o be_v i_o and_o papacy_n fall_v here_o with_o all_o the_o most_o precious_a and_o holy_a work_n thereof_o which_o have_v this_o drift_n only_o that_o miserable_a wretched_a and_o blind_v man_n may_v be_v persuade_v strive_v to_o be_v holy_a than_o a_o other_o according_a as_o they_o exercise_v hard_a great_a and_o weighty_a work_n but_o this_o their_o miserable_a labour_n anguish_n prayer_n fasting_n chastise_v of_o usury_n and_o private_a profit_n that_o it_o can_v not_o be_v rehearse_v as_o yet_o they_o endeavour_n again_o to_o bring_v in_o the_o mass_n to_o set_v up_o their_o taper_n &c_n &c_n be_v persuade_v that_o god_n be_v pacify_v with_o such_o trifle_n revolve_v this_o only_a in_o their_o mind_n that_o their_o fame_n may_v remain_v untouched_a and_o unhurt_a in_o the_o world_n howsoever_o they_o agree_v with_o god_n of_o such_o wise_a and_o prudent_a man_n christ_n speak_v here_o in_o the_o gospel_n which_o hear_v the_o gospel_n in_o deed_n and_o see_v miracle_n but_o it_o profit_v
