i_o pray_v look_v into_o the_o 8._o chap._n of_o the_o epistle_n to_o the_o hebrew_n where_o this_o covenant_n of_o grace_n be_v repeat_v at_o the_o 10._o verse_n for_o this_o be_v the_o covenant_n that_o i_o will_v make_v with_o the_o house_n of_o israel_n say_v the_o lord_n i_o will_v put_v my_o law_n into_o their_o mind_n and_o write_v they_o in_o their_o heart_n and_o they_o shall_v not_o teach_v every_o man_n his_o neighbour_n and_o every_o man_n his_o brother_n say_v know_v the_o lord_n for_o all_o shall_v know_v i_o from_o the_o least_o to_o the_o great_a why_o for_o i_o will_v be_v even_o because_o they_o do_v not_o stand_v clear_a from_o their_o own_o duty_n and_o their_o own_o do_n as_o to_o the_o great_a matter_n of_o justification_n and_o acceptance_n with_o god_n be_v the_o free-remission_n of_o sin_n and_o justification_n by_o faith_n alone_o the_o fountain_n and_o original_a of_o all_o our_o holiness_n then_o why_o stand_v you_o gaze_v upon_o your_o own_o duty_n upon_o though_o i_o have_v but_o little_a the_o lord_n know_v i_o do_v not_o oppose_v they_o that_o have_v much_o i_o rejoice_v rather_o in_o those_o that_o have_v more_o than_o myself_o yea_o i_o rejoice_v in_o those_o that_o have_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n and_o lord_n thou_o know_v i_o do_v not_o stint_v and_o limit_v myself_o oh_o i_o can_v never_o be_v godly_a enough_o and_o i_o can_v never_o repent_v enough_o and_o i_o can_v never_o mourn_v for_o my_o sin_n enough_o well_o be_v of_o good_a comfort_n this_o may_v be_v no_o other_o stream_n than_o what_o flow_v from_o this_o bless_a fountain_n free-remission_n and_o justification_n by_o faith_n alone_o object_n 3_o three_o will_v some_o say_v i_o fear_v that_o upon_o all_o this_o account_n my_o obedience_n and_o my_o holiness_n be_v not_o right_a for_o i_o do_v not_o find_v the_o visible_a character_n of_o justification_n upon_o my_o sanctification_n justification_n by_o faith_n alone_o be_v the_o fountain_n of_o all_o our_o holiness_n then_o if_o my_o obedience_n be_v right_a it_o will_v taste_v of_o my_o justification_n and_o of_o free-remission_n if_o my_o holiness_n be_v right_a it_o will_v savour_v of_o free-remission_n but_o i_o do_v not_o find_v any_o visible_a character_n of_o justification_n upon_o my_o sanctification_n i_o do_v not_o find_v that_o my_o sanctification_n do_v relish_v or_o savour_n of_o free-remission_n or_o justification_n by_o faith_n alone_o &_o therefore_o i_o fear_v all_o be_v naught_o my_o obedience_n have_v be_v naught_o and_o wrong_v all_o this_o while_n answ_n for_o answer_v to_o this_o know_v you_o not_o belove_v that_o a_o man_n justification_n may_v be_v hide_v from_o sense_n when_o sanctification_n be_v in_o truth_n know_v you_o not_o that_o the_o life_n of_o grace_n be_v a_o hide_a life_n not_o only_o hide_v from_o the_o world_n but_o hide_v from_o one_o own_o soul_n many_o time_n quest_n but_o what_o be_v those_o visible_a character_n of_o justification_n which_o be_v engrave_v upon_o a_o man_n sanctification_n so_o that_o when_o a_o man_n do_v see_v they_o he_o may_v say_v sure_o here_o be_v a_o sanctification_n that_o be_v no_o other_o than_o that_o which_o flow_v from_o free-remission_n and_o justification_n by_o faith_n along_o answ_n 1_o first_o when_o a_o man_n do_v mourn_v for_o his_o sin_n because_o it_o be_v pardon_v do_v not_o this_o repentance_n savour_n of_o free-remission_n when_o a_o man_n do_v obey_v the_o lord_n because_o god_n have_v pardon_v and_o forgive_v he_o do_v not_o this_o sanctification_n than_o savour_n of_o his_o justification_n and_o of_o free-remission_n second_o when_o there_o be_v a_o meeting_n of_o all_o grace_n and_o one_o good_a work_n and_o duty_n and_o grace_n be_v reconcile_v to_o another_o in_o a_o man_n life_n be_v there_o not_o then_o a_o taste_n and_o a_o savour_n of_o justification_n and_o free-remission_n when_o the_o lord_n do_v justify_v a_o poor_a sinner_n than_o all_o the_o attribute_n of_o god_n be_v reconcile_v to_o one_o another_o justice_n be_v reconcile_v to_o mercy_n and_o mercy_n be_v reconcile_v to_o justice_n and_o all_o these_o reconcile_a attribute_n of_o the_o lord_n do_v meet_v upon_o the_o soul_n of_o a_o justify_v person_n and_o according_o there_o be_v a_o meeting_n of_o all_o grace_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o all_o good_a work_n and_o grace_n they_o be_v reconcile_v to_o one_o another_o that_o whereas_o before_o a_o man_n be_v justify_v they_o be_v at_o odds_n at_o a_o distance_n one_o from_o another_o and_o be_v inimititious_a one_o to_o another_o now_o they_o be_v not_o whereas_o before_o a_o man_n be_v justify_v he_o can_v not_o rejoice_v in_o god_n but_o it_o hinder_v his_o mourning_n for_o sin_n and_o he_o can_v not_o mourn_v for_o sin_n but_o it_o hinder_v his_o faith_n and_o he_o can_v not_o believe_v but_o his_o believe_a hinder_v his_o repentance_n but_o now_o when_o a_o man_n be_v justify_v and_o reconcile_v to_o the_o lord_n than_o all_o those_o work_n duty_n and_o grace_n be_v reconcile_v to_o one_o another_o why_o because_o the_o attribute_n of_o god_n be_v reconcile_v unto_o one_o another_o and_o all_o the_o attribute_n of_o god_n they_o meet_v upon_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o justify_v person_n and_o so_o there_o be_v the_o character_n of_o his_o justification_n upon_o his_o sanctification_n here_o and_o i_o appeal_v to_o you_o who_o ever_o you_o be_v that_o labour_n under_o this_o scruple_n be_v it_o not_o thus_o with_o thy_o soul_n in_o truth_n do_v not_o you_o find_v it_o thus_o that_o now_o you_o look_v upon_o the_o very_a justice_n of_o the_o lord_n as_o your_o friend_n the_o justice_n and_o righteousness_n of_o the_o lord_n as_o your_o friend_n that_o now_o you_o be_v reconcile_v as_o it_o be_v to_o those_o duty_n that_o heretofore_o you_o look_v upon_o as_o your_o enemy_n that_o now_o you_o rest_n upon_o the_o lord_n christ_n that_o you_o may_v be_v obedient_a and_o your_o very_a rest_v upon_o christ_n make_v you_o obedient_a your_o very_o behold_v of_o christ_n change_v you_o from_o glory_n to_o glory_n as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v 3.18_o 2_o cor._n 3.18_o if_o you_o will_v speak_v in_o truth_n from_o your_o soul_n you_o will_v say_v thus_o lord_n thus_o it_o be_v with_o i_o now_o i_o be_o reconcile_v to_o that_o duty_n that_o before_o be_v a_o enemy_n to_o i_o and_o now_o these_o work_n duty_n and_o grace_n be_v reconcile_v for_o now_o the_o more_o i_o can_v rejoice_v in_o god_n the_o more_o i_o can_v mourn_v for_o sin_n and_o the_o more_o i_o believe_v the_o more_o i_o can_v repent_v heretofore_o the_o more_o i_o believe_v the_o less_o i_o repent_v my_o believe_v be_v my_o security_n but_o now_o i_o see_v these_o work_n and_o duty_n be_v friend_n to_o one_o another_o that_o now_o the_o more_o i_o repent_v the_o more_o i_o believe_v and_o the_o more_o i_o believe_v the_o more_o i_o repent_v all_o these_o work_n be_v reconcile_v in_o i_o and_o lord_n thou_o that_o know_v all_o thing_n know_v that_o therefore_o i_o grieve_v for_o my_o sin_n because_o thou_o have_v pardon_v they_o and_o therefore_o i_o desire_v to_o obey_v thou_o because_o thou_o have_v forgive_v i_o well_o then_o here_o be_v the_o visible_a character_n of_o thy_o justification_n upon_o thy_o sanctification_n and_o therefore_o be_v of_o good_a comfort_n notwithstanding_o this_o objection_n only_o let_v i_o tell_v thou_o this_o it_o may_v be_v thou_o have_v not_o stand_v enough_o at_o a_o distance_n from_o thy_o own_o do_n and_o duty_n as_o to_o the_o matter_n of_o thy_o acceptance_n with_o god_n but_o will_v you_o be_v more_o spiritual_a and_o holy_a in_o your_o life_n labour_n more_o and_o more_o to_o stand_v at_o a_o distance_n from_o all_o your_o duty_n and_o do_n as_o to_o the_o great_a matter_n of_o your_o acceptance_n with_o god_n the_o father_n quest_n but_o you_o will_v say_v suppose_v that_o i_o have_v not_o stand_v clear_a from_o my_o own_o do_n as_o to_o the_o matter_n of_o my_o justification_n or_o acceptance_n with_o god_n the_o father_n what_o shall_v i_o do_v that_o now_o i_o may_v stand_v clear_a in_o this_o matter_n that_o so_o this_o fountain_n of_o free-remission_n and_o justification_n by_o faith_n alone_o may_v be_v open_v upon_o my_o soul_n and_o my_o spiritual_a life_n thereby_o may_v be_v more_o enlarge_a and_o increase_v some_o thing_n by_o way_n of_o answer_n to_o this_o and_o so_o i_o have_v do_v first_o be_v you_o humble_v in_o the_o sight_n and_o presence_n of_o the_o lord_n that_o you_o have_v walk_v in_o that_o way_n that_o you_o have_v tie_v jesus_n christ_n unto_o your_o condition_n and_o that_o you_o have_v make_v use_n of_o christ_n only_o to_o eek_v out_o your_o performance_n as_o to_o the_o matter_n of_o your_o acceptance_n second_o study_v much_o
clothes_n or_o he_o be_v proud_a of_o his_o friend_n or_o he_o be_v proud_a of_o his_o fine_a house_n and_o the_o like_a but_o after_o once_o a_o man_n come_v to_o take_v up_o a_o profession_n there_o be_v nothing_o that_o he_o be_v more_o apt_a to_o be_v proud_a of_o than_o his_o gift_n grace_n and_o spiritual_a thing_n for_o look_v where_o a_o man_n excellency_n lie_v there_o his_o pride_n grow_v now_o the_o excellency_n of_o a_o professor_n lie_v in_o spiritual_a thing_n and_o therefore_o there_o his_o pride_n grow_v and_o there_o he_o be_v most_o apt_a to_o be_v proud_a yet_o let_v i_o tell_v you_o it_o be_v a_o more_o dangerous_a thing_n to_o be_v proud_a of_o a_o man_n duty_n and_o spiritual_a gift_n then_o to_o be_v proud_a of_o clothes_n then_o to_o be_v proud_a of_o these_o outward_a thing_n for_o this_o pride_n of_o spiritual_a gift_n it_o be_v direct_o opposite_a to_o a_o man_n justification_n and_o the_o more_o secret_a &_o hide_v any_o sin_n be_v the_o more_o dangerous_a it_o be_v and_o when_o sin_n &_o pride_n lie_v under_o duty_n and_o spiritual_a thing_n than_o it_o be_v hide_v indeed_o the_o more_o bold_a a_o sin_n be_v the_o great_a it_o be_v when_o a_o sin_n shall_v dare_v to_o come_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n than_o it_o be_v bold_a indeed_o now_o pride_n in_o spiritual_a thing_n come_v more_o into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n than_o pride_n of_o clothes_n and_o these_o outward_a thing_n do_v &_o therefore_o it_o be_v the_o bold_a and_o the_o great_a sin_n &_o therefore_o who_o will_v not_o take_v heed_n hereof_o who_o will_v not_o labour_v for_o this_o self-denial_n to_o be_v humble_a and_o deny_v of_o one_o self_n in_o spiritual_a thing_n true_o the_o first_o step_n to_o humility_n be_v to_o see_v one_o pride_n and_o the_o first_o step_n to_o self-denial_n be_v to_o be_v convince_v of_o one_o self-advancing_a object_n but_o will_v some_o poor_a soul_n say_v that_o hear_v all_o this_o i_o be_o convince_v of_o my_o own_o pride_n and_o selvishness_n in_o all_o my_o duty_n i_o can_v do_v nothing_o but_o self_n get_v in_o i_o write_v a_o i_o upon_o all_o that_o i_o do_v i_o can_v deny_v myself_o in_o spiritual_a thing_n i_o have_v hear_v of_o some_o that_o have_v be_v so_o humble_a and_o self-denying_a that_o they_o have_v be_v willing_a and_o content_v to_o go_v to_o hell_n if_o god_n will_v have_v it_o so_o but_o as_o for_o i_o the_o lord_n know_v i_o be_o not_o content_v so_o i_o have_v a_o proud_a heart_n and_o self_n creep_v into_o all_o that_o i_o do_v and_o therefore_o i_o fear_v that_o i_o have_v not_o this_o faith_n therefore_o i_o fear_v that_o the_o gospel_n never_o come_v in_o power_n upon_o my_o soul_n to_o this_o day_n answ_n though_o every_o true_a believer_n be_v a_o humble_a self-denying_a person_n and_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o this_o gospel-self-denial_n yet_o know_v there_o be_v something_o of_o self_n some_o remain_v of_o self_n that_o still_o continue_v with_o the_o best_a something_o still_o that_o will_v taste_v of_o the_o cask_n though_o the_o onion_n that_o be_v beat_v in_o the_o mortar_n be_v take_v out_o of_o the_o mortar_n yet_o the_o mortar_n will_v smell_v of_o it_o a_o godly_a gracious_a man_n be_v sensible_a of_o his_o own_o pride_n and_o self-advancing_a in_o spiritual_a thing_n and_o will_v cry_v out_o and_o say_v oh_o what_o a_o proud_a heart_n have_v i_o a_o self-advancing_a heart_n have_v i_o but_o show_v i_o that_o man_n that_o be_v ever_o so_o transform_v melt_v change_v into_o the_o mould_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o still_o some_o savour_n of_o self_n remain_v whereas_o you_o say_v that_o some_o be_v willing_a and_o content_v to_o go_v to_o hell_n if_o god_n will_v have_v it_o so_o i_o have_v hear_v it_o of_o some_o yea_o and_o that_o some_o minister_n have_v put_v people_n upon_o this_o trial_n as_o thus_o be_v thou_o content_v to_o go_v to_o hell_n if_o god_n will_v have_v it_o so_o i_o say_v i_o have_v hear_v that_o even_o some_o minister_n have_v put_v people_n upon_o such_o a_o trial_n as_o this_o be_v but_o where_o be_v their_o commission_n where_o have_v any_o minister_n such_o a_o commission_n from_o the_o lord_n to_o put_v poor_a people_n upon_o such_o a_o trial_n as_o this_o be_v soul_n be_v thou_o content_v to_o go_v to_o hell_n if_o god_n will_v have_v it_o so_o let_v any_o minister_n show_v i_o his_o commission_n to_o put_v a_o soul_n upon_o such_o a_o trial_n as_o this_o be_v and_o where_o soul_n have_v thou_o a_o commission_n to_o put_v thyself_o upon_o such_o a_o trial_n no_o we_o may_v have_v a_o eye_n to_o the_o recompense_n of_o reward_n the_o lord_n christ_n himself_o have_v so_o he_o have_v a_o eye_n himself_o unto_o the_o recompense_n of_o reward_n and_o therefore_o though_o thou_o can_v not_o bring_v thy_o soul_n unto_o this_o height_n yet_o there_o may_v be_v some_o humility_n even_o gospel_n self-denial_n that_o may_v lie_v under_o the_o leaf_n this_o gospel_n humility_n and_o self-denial_n it_o be_v as_o i_o may_v so_o speak_v the_o soul_n violet_n the_o violet_n you_o know_v it_o be_v a_o very_a sweet_a flower_n but_o it_o lie_v very_o low_a it_o hang_v down_o its_o head_n and_o it_o lie_v under_o other_o herb_n obscure_a herb_n as_o if_o it_o love_v to_o be_v unseen_a but_o it_o smell_n very_o sweet_o and_o if_o you_o will_v find_v out_o this_o sweet-smelling_a herb_n and_o violet_n you_o must_v lift_v up_o other_o obscure_a leaf_n and_o there_o you_o shall_v see_v it_o so_o this_o humility_n and_o self-denial_n it_o lie_v under_o other_o duty_n and_o under_o other_o exercise_n and_o if_o you_o will_v see_v it_o you_o must_v lift_v up_o other_o leaf_n though_o thou_o be_v not_o able_a to_o attain_v to_o that_o height_n as_o to_o say_v thou_o will_v be_v content_v to_o go_v to_o hell_n if_o god_n will_v have_v it_o so_o yet_o thou_o may_v have_v this_o sweet_a violet_n though_o it_o lie_v under_o other_o herb_n yet_o thou_o may_v see_v it_o and_o it_o may_v be_v smell_v only_o this_o if_o at_o any_o time_n self_n break_v out_o if_o at_o any_o time_n thy_o soul_n begin_v to_o be_v advance_v in_o regard_n of_o duty_n or_o spiritual_a thing_n i_o do_v here_o call_v upon_o you_o fall_v down_o before_o the_o lord_n and_o humble_v thyself_o before_o he_o for_o the_o pride_n of_o thy_o heart_n concern_v spiritual_a thing_n and_o labour_n to_o get_v this_o self-denial_n in_o spiritual_a thing_n i_o be_o not_o to_o speak_v of_o self-denial_n at_o large_a but_o i_o call_v upon_o you_o from_o the_o lord_n to_o labour_v to_o get_v self-denial_n in_o spiritual_a thing_n and_o take_v these_o two_o of_o three_o motive_n to_o it_o first_o the_o more_o you_o deny_v yourself_o in_o spiritual_a thing_n the_o more_o you_o shall_v be_v sure_a to_o keep_v they_o say_v chrysostome_n the_o best_a treasury_n to_o keep_v any_o good_a work_n in_o be_v forgetfulness_n of_o that_o good_a work_n you_o know_v that_o if_o a_o man_n be_v spiritual_a thing_n the_o more_o humble_a you_o will_v be_v in_o other_o thing_n and_o the_o more_o humble_a you_o be_v the_o more_o sweet_o shall_v you_o live_v in_o your_o own_o bosom_n yea_o towards_o and_o among_o other_o some_o possible_o complain_v of_o a_o froward_a spirit_n oh_o say_v one_o i_o be_o of_o a_o angry_a disposition_n my_o husband_n my_o child_n my_o servant_n my_o wife_n or_o my_o friend_n can_v meddle_v with_o i_o or_o touch_v i_o but_o i_o be_o ready_a to_o break_v out_o in_o distemper_n anger_n and_o frowardness_n the_o lord_n know_v i_o have_v a_o very_a froward_a and_o peevish_a heart_n of_o my_o own_o but_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n pride_n pride_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o frowardness_n you_o see_v how_o it_o be_v with_o a_o bladder_n let_v a_o bladder_n be_v
