break_v the_o vow_n he_o have_v make_v and_o act_n contrary_a to_o what_o he_o have_v most_o solemn_o promise_v to_o the_o almighty_a he_o that_o so_o do_v as_o he_o contract_v with_o god_n as_o with_o a_o party_n so_o falsify_v to_o he_o direct_o and_o immediate_o and_o consequent_o because_o so_o much_o the_o more_o dishonour_v he_o the_o more_o liable_a to_o the_o severity_n of_o his_o displeasure_n and_o according_o when_o ananias_n and_o saphira_n have_v agreeable_o to_o the_o custom_n of_o those_o time_n by_o a_o vow_n dedicate_v the_o price_n of_o their_o possession_n unto_o god_n god_n for_o a_o partial_a breach_n of_o that_o their_o vow_n inflict_v a_o sudden_a death_n upon_o they_o and_o make_v they_o feel_v the_o dreadfulness_n of_o that_o name_n which_o they_o have_v be_v holy_a and_o after_o vow_n to_o make_v inquiry_n the_o forementioned_a offender_n have_v not_o only_o be_v take_v in_o the_o snare_n but_o make_v to_o feel_v the_o hand_n of_o the_o fowler_n thus_o which_o way_n soever_o man_n take_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o vain_a they_o incur_v the_o displeasure_n of_o the_o almighty_a and_o though_o they_o be_v not_o always_o immediate_o punish_v yet_o they_o be_v so_o often_o enough_o to_o show_v that_o god_n do_v not_o hold_v any_o of_o they_o guiltless_a and_o that_o who_o he_o now_o spare_v he_o will_v punish_v so_o much_o the_o more_o hereafter_o when_o he_o come_v to_o render_v to_o every_o man_n according_a to_o his_o work_n what_o remain_v then_o but_o that_o i_o admonish_v if_o not_o for_o the_o sacredness_n of_o the_o name_n of_o god_n yet_o that_o at_o least_o for_o the_o security_n of_o their_o own_o soul_n and_o person_n man_n will_v not_o take_v that_o name_n of_o he_o in_o vain_a for_o if_o either_o the_o threat_v of_o god_n or_o the_o exemplification_n of_o it_o in_o those_o that_o have_v offend_v may_v be_v credit_v the_o take_n of_o his_o name_n in_o vain_a however_o such_o as_o to_o what_o it_o be_v apply_v to_o yet_o will_v not_o be_v vain_a as_o to_o the_o consequence_n thereof_o for_o as_o it_o shall_v be_v with_o effect_n so_o a_o very_a direful_a one_o to_o those_o who_o be_v the_o author_n of_o it_o they_o shall_v not_o as_o they_o do_v often_o with_o man_n find_v commendation_n and_o applause_n they_o shall_v not_o be_v look_v upon_o as_o so_o much_o the_o better_o breed_v or_o the_o that_o he_o will_v look_v upon_o they_o under_o another_o notion_n and_o not_o only_o not_o hold_v they_o guiltless_a but_o look_v upon_o they_o as_o notorious_a offender_n and_o indeed_o thus_o far_o the_o judgement_n of_o the_o world_n have_v concur_v with_o that_o of_o god_n as_o to_o condemn_v the_o take_n of_o it_o to_o a_o lie_n false_a swear_v and_o perjury_n have_v not_o only_o be_v brand_v with_o reproachful_a punishment_n but_o the_o author_n thereof_o exclude_v from_o give_v testimony_n in_o any_o court_n of_o judicature_n if_o other_o profanation_n of_o god_n name_n have_v not_o find_v the_o like_a censure_n it_o be_v not_o so_o much_o because_o they_o imagine_v they_o specifical_o different_a but_o because_o they_o be_v not_o so_o immediate_o destructive_a to_o humane_a society_n which_o humane_a judicature_n be_v more_o particular_o oblige_v to_o preserve_v but_o as_o that_o be_v accidental_a to_o the_o take_n of_o god_n name_n in_o vain_a or_o at_o least_o make_v the_o crime_n to_o which_o it_o adhere_v only_o gradual_o different_a from_o the_o other_o so_o the_o judgment-seat_n of_o god_n take_v notice_n of_o all_o that_o entrench_v upon_o his_o honour_n observation_n of_o such_o a_o time_n be_v that_o positive_a law_n which_o be_v now_o before_o we_o but_o as_o i_o have_v already_o show_v the_o letter_n thereof_o not_o to_o concern_v we_o as_o to_o the_o day_n here_o require_v so_o christianity_n be_v apparent_o not_o so_o nice_a as_o to_o the_o observation_n of_o circumstance_n we_o be_v in_o reason_n to_o measure_v our_o own_o obligation_n as_o to_o the_o time_n of_o our_o worship_n rather_o by_o the_o equity_n than_o letter_n of_o the_o commandment_n which_o what_o that_o be_v i_o shall_v in_o due_a place_n declare_v now_o though_o from_o what_o have_v be_v say_v a_o judgement_n may_v be_v make_v what_o we_o be_v to_o think_v of_o the_o observation_n of_o a_o seven_o day_n and_o particular_o of_o that_o seven_o day_n which_o be_v the_o jewish_a sabbath_n yet_o to_o make_v my_o discourse_n so_o much_o the_o more_o complete_a and_o because_o there_o want_v not_o particular_a argument_n to_o propugn_v my_o opinion_n in_o those_o particular_n i_o will_v make_v it_o my_o business_n to_o show_v that_o there_o be_v no_o obligation_n upon_o we_o christian_n either_o from_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n or_o this_o particular_a precept_n to_o observe_v either_o a_o precise_a seven_o day_n or_o that_o seven_o day_n which_o the_o jew_n observe_v to_o begin_v with_o the_o former_a of_o these_o even_o the_o observation_n of_o a_o seven_o which_o have_v by_o some_o man_n be_v plead_v for_o with_o so_o great_a earnestness_n concern_v which_o i_o shall_v show_v first_o that_o it_o have_v no_o foundation_n in_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n and_o second_o that_o it_o have_v as_o little_a in_o this_o if_o consider_v in_o respect_n of_o we_o that_o it_o have_v not_o in_o the_o former_a this_o one_o character_n of_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n may_v suffice_v any_o sober_a man_n to_o conclude_v for_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n prescribe_v only_o such_o thing_n to_o our_o observation_n as_o be_v in_o their_o own_o nature_n good_a before_o the_o superinduce_n of_o any_o positive_a law_n it_o will_v follow_v that_o the_o observation_n of_o a_o seven_o day_n have_v a_o peculiar_a goodness_n in_o it_o and_o that_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v observe_v though_o god_n have_v by_o no_o positive_a law_n enjoin_v it_o but_o what_o goodness_n can_v even_o they_o who_o profess_v to_o believe_v it_o moral_a show_v in_o a_o seven_o day_n more_o than_o in_o a_o six_o or_o eighth_n or_o any_o other_o day_n whatsoever_o unless_o it_o be_v that_o god_n rest_v upon_o it_o from_o the_o work_n of_o the_o creation_n which_o be_v the_o reason_n here_o allege_v for_o its_o observance_n but_o first_o of_o all_o if_o god_n rest_v upon_o it_o give_v it_o any_o peculiar_a goodness_n what_o need_n be_v there_o of_o his_o add_v his_o blessing_n and_o command_v to_o oblige_v man_n to_o the_o observance_n of_o it_o for_o the_o day_n be_v holy_a without_o and_o before_o it_o it_o will_v have_v suffice_v to_o have_v declare_v that_o that_o be_v the_o day_n on_o which_o he_o rest_v again_o forasmuch_o as_o blessing_n and_o sanctify_v suppose_v that_o which_o be_v so_o bless_a and_o sanctify_v to_o have_v be_v before_o in_o the_o common_a condition_n of_o thing_n god_n so_o blessing_n and_o sanctify_v of_o the_o seven_o day_n suppose_v that_o to_o have_v be_v of_o the_o nature_n of_o other_o day_n and_o consequent_o not_o to_o be_v consecrate_v by_o his_o bare_a rest_a on_o it_o last_o forasmuch_o as_o whatsoever_o goodness_n there_o be_v in_o any_o thing_n it_o must_v be_v suppose_v to_o descend_v upon_o it_o by_o the_o influence_n of_o the_o divine_a if_o we_o suppose_v the_o seven_o day_n to_o have_v have_v any_o peculiar_a goodness_n and_o holiness_n we_o must_v also_o suppose_v it_o to_o have_v receive_v it_o from_o the_o same_o influx_n which_o can_v be_v affirm_v in_o the_o present_a case_n because_o that_o to_o which_o it_o be_v ascribe_v be_v not_o any_o influence_n of_o the_o divine_a goodness_n but_o only_o the_o suspension_n of_o it_o i_o conclude_v therefore_o that_o god_n rest_n upon_o it_o do_v not_o give_v the_o seven_o day_n any_o peculiar_a holiness_n and_o consequent_o because_o that_o be_v the_o only_a reason_n allege_v that_o there_o be_v nothing_o of_o morality_n in_o the_o observance_n of_o it_o from_o nature_n and_o morality_n therefore_o pass_v we_o to_o the_o present_a precept_n and_o inquire_v whether_o that_o induce_v any_o obligation_n upon_o we_o to_o observe_v it_o give_v i_o leave_v only_o to_o premise_v that_o the_o question_n be_v not_o as_o be_v common_o deem_v whether_o one_o in_o seven_o be_v of_o necessity_n to_o be_v observe_v but_o whether_o a_o seven_o day_n after_o six_o day_n of_o labour_n for_o though_o it_o be_v true_a that_o he_o who_o require_v a_o seven_o day_n require_v one_o in_o seven_o yet_o require_v it_o with_o reference_n to_o god_n rest_n from_o his_o six_o day_n of_o creation_n he_o determine_v it_o to_o the_o last_o of_o those_o seven_o because_o no_o other_o beside_o the_o last_o can_v answer_v it_o which_o say_v i_o shall_v not_o stick_v to_o affirm_v that_o there_o be_v no_o obligation_n upon_o we_o as_o to_o a_o seven_o because_o the_o precept_n so_o consider_v relate_v only_o to_o the_o jew_n for_o the_o evidence_n whereof_o i_o will_v allege_v that_o of_o exodus_fw-la chap._n 31.16_o 17._o wherefore_o the_o child_n of_o israel_n shall_v keep_v the_o sabbath_n to_o observe_v the_o sabbath_n throughout_o their_o generation_n for_o a_o perpetual_a covenant_n it_o be_v a_o sign_n between_o i_o and_o the_o child_n of_o israel_n for_o ever_o for_o in_o six_o day_n the_o lord_n make_v heaven_n and_o earth_n and_o on_o the_o seven_o day_n he_o rest_v and_o be_v refresh_v for_o as_o it_o be_v sufficient_o know_v that_o the_o covenant_n between_o god_n and_o the_o israelite_n leave_v no_o place_n for_o any_o that_o be_v not_o of_o their_o nation_n or_o religion_n so_o the_o sabbath_n be_v for_o a_o sign_n of_o that_o covenant_n be_v consequent_o to_o extend_v no_o far_o than_o the_o covenant_n do_v and_o therefore_o also_o to_o no_o other_o than_o themselves_o the_o only_a difficulty_n be_v whether_o what_o be_v affirm_v of_o the_o sabbath_n in_o particular_a be_v to_o be_v understand_v also_o of_o a_o seven_o day_n in_o the_o general_a for_o the_o resolution_n whereof_o we_o shall_v need_v to_o go_v no_o further_o than_o the_o close_a of_o that_o place_n we_o have_v now_o before_o we_o for_o affirm_v the_o sabbath_n whereof_o he_o speak_v to_o be_v a_o sign_n between_o he_o and_o will_v serve_v only_o to_o discredit_v that_o day_n for_o which_o they_o so_o contend_v for_o though_o the_o lord's-day_n be_v one_o of_o seven_o yet_o it_o be_v the_o first_o of_o those_o seven_o and_o be_v not_o precede_v by_o six_o day_n of_o labour_n but_o follow_v by_o which_o mean_v it_o hold_v no_o analogy_n with_o the_o design_n of_o the_o institution_n because_o intend_v to_o commemorate_v the_o six_o day_n of_o the_o creation_n and_o that_o rest_v which_o follow_v neither_o will_v it_o suffice_v to_o say_v as_o perhaps_o it_o may_v be_v that_o the_o analogy_n between_o it_o and_o that_o rest_v it_o be_v propose_v to_o imitate_v may_v be_v salve_v

they_o that_o rest_n which_o give_v it_o its_o name_n and_o a_o great_a part_n of_o its_o nature_n must_v be_v look_v upon_o as_o in_o like_a manner_n peculiar_a to_o they_o and_o consequent_o not_o obligatory_a to_o we_o but_o neither_o be_v it_o less_o evident_a that_o such_o a_o rest_n will_v be_v superstitious_a if_o either_o impose_v or_o observe_v as_o religious_a because_o place_v religion_n in_o that_o which_o however_o it_o may_v have_v some_o place_n in_o the_o jewish_a yet_o be_v no_o part_n of_o the_o christian_a because_o exhibit_v that_o better_a rest_n of_o which_o the_o other_o be_v a_o type_n if_o therefore_o there_o be_v any_o obligation_n upon_o we_o from_o the_o rest_n here_o command_v it_o must_v be_v either_o to_o the_o observation_n of_o that_o spiritual_a rest_n of_o which_o it_o be_v a_o type_n or_o to_o such_o a_o bodily_a one_o as_o be_v requisite_a to_o the_o solemn_a performance_n of_o god_n worship_n each_o of_o which_o i_o come_v now_o to_o consider_v of_o the_o former_a of_o these_o rest_n there_o be_v not_o the_o least_o doubt_n to_o be_v make_v that_o be_v to_o say_v of_o a_o spiritual_a one_o or_o rest_v from_o sin_n for_o it_o be_v evident_a on_o the_o one_o hand_n that_o the_o law_n of_o moses_n be_v write_v for_o our_o direction_n and_o obedience_n as_o well_o that_o which_o be_v etc._n be_v see_v the_o discourse_n concern_v the_o positive_a law_n of_o god_n etc._n etc._n ceremonial_a as_o that_o which_o be_v moral_a and_o substantial_a and_o it_o be_v no_o less_o evident_a on_o the_o other_o that_o that_o of_o it_o which_o be_v ceremonial_a be_v not_o write_v to_o oblige_v we_o to_o the_o ceremony_n itself_o it_o follow_v because_o it_o be_v write_v for_o our_o direction_n and_o obedience_n that_o it_o be_v intend_v to_o oblige_v we_o to_o those_o spiritual_a duty_n of_o which_o the_o other_o be_v type_n and_o shadow_n now_o forasmuch_o as_o the_o rest_n enjoin_v the_o jew_n be_v a_o type_n of_o some_o christian_a duty_n forasmuch_o as_o there_o be_v no_o duty_n in_o christianity_n which_o can_v better_a answer_v it_o than_o a_o rest_n from_o sin_n it_o follow_v that_o though_o we_o look_v not_o upon_o ourselves_o as_o concern_v in_o the_o rest_n enjoin_v the_o jew_n yet_o we_o look_v upon_o ourselves_o as_o concern_v in_o that_o rest_n of_o which_o it_o be_v a_o type_n and_o according_o cease_v from_o our_o sinful_a work_n as_o they_o do_v on_o the_o sabbath_n from_o the_o work_n of_o their_o several_a employment_n again_o though_o the_o rest_v enjoin_v the_o jew_n oblige_v we_o rather_o to_o the_o thing_n signify_v by_o it_o than_o to_o the_o rest_n itself_o though_o in_o the_o circumstance_n in_o which_o it_o be_v enjoin_v it_o be_v apparent_o legal_a and_o consequent_o one_o of_o those_o bondage_n from_o which_o christ_n come_v to_o set_v we_o free_a yet_o so_o far_o forth_o as_o that_o be_v requisite_a to_o the_o performance_n of_o god_n worship_n there_o be_v no_o doubt_n it_o do_v oblige_v we_o even_o as_o to_o the_o thing_n itself_o because_o as_o be_v before_o show_v commandment_n show_v see_v part_n 1._o of_o the_o explic._n of_o this_o commandment_n a_o part_n of_o the_o moral_a law_n and_o subordinate_a to_o the_o main_a end_n of_o this_o but_o from_o hence_o as_o be_v there_o observe_v it_o will_v follow_v that_o we_o be_v to_o rest_v from_o our_o of_o sin_n the_o 51_o psalm_n will_v fit_v we_o as_o contain_v both_o a_o ingenuous_a acknowledgement_n of_o it_o and_o a_o earnest_a prayer_n for_o the_o pardon_n of_o it_o if_o we_o find_v in_o objection_n against_o they_o be_v not_o think_v so_o by_o st._n james_n or_o st._n paul_n the_o former_a whereof_o invite_v to_o the_o private_a sing_v the_o latter_a to_o the_o teach_v and_o
