work_n of_o regeneration_n and_o grace_n be_v require_v of_o believer_n not_o as_o merit_n but_o as_o duty_n only_o and_o testimony_n of_o their_o thankfulness_n to_o god_n their_o redeemer_n like_v as_o the_o condition_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n be_v not_o of_o merit_n but_o of_o duty_n only_o and_o of_o testimony_n of_o their_o thankfulness_n to_o god_n their_o creator_n i_o grant_v that_o the_o work_n of_o regeneration_n be_v necessary_a unto_o eternal_a life_n promise_v in_o the_o gospel_n but_o not_o as_o merit_n or_o meritorious_a cause_n but_o as_o the_o mean_n and_o way_n abolish_v do_v first_o appertain_v to_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n but_o now_o it_o have_v another_o special_a use_n for_o it_o serve_v for_o our_o direction_n in_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n and_o sanctification_n so_o then_o the_o law_n have_v cease_v as_o it_o be_v the_o rule_n of_o the_o work_n of_o nature_n require_v in_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n but_o it_o be_v still_o in_o use_n to_o they_o which_o be_v in_o christ_n as_o it_o be_v the_o rule_n of_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n for_o the_o same_o justice_n of_o god_n be_v unchangeable_a and_o the_o law_n of_o god_n be_v the_o very_a image_n of_o divine_a justice_n wherefore_o the_o law_n of_o god_n must_v abide_v for_o ever_o albeit_o it_o have_v not_o ever_o the_o same_o use_n nor_o be_v not_o always_o the_o rule_n of_o the_o same_o work_n but_o of_o this_o we_o shall_v speak_v more_o at_o large_a hereafter_o it_o be_v a_o question_n here_o whether_o in_o the_o first_o creation_n good_a work_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o the_o work_n of_o nature_n for_o in_o that_o epistle_n he_o dispute_v principal_o against_o this_o kind_n of_o work_n he_o reason_v against_o they_o as_o seem_v meritorious_a &_o not_o as_o duty_n &_o testimony_n of_o man_n thankfulness_n unto_o god_n wherefore_o it_o may_v seem_v they_o be_v command_v unto_o man_n in_o his_o creation_n as_o meritorious_a i_o answer_v true_a it_o be_v paul_n dispute_v there_o of_o they_o as_o of_o merit_n not_o for_o that_o this_o be_v his_o judgement_n of_o they_o but_o because_o the_o jew_n have_v that_o conceit_n of_o they_o which_o be_v so_o far_o blind_v that_o they_o think_v the_o good_a work_n of_o nature_n be_v not_o only_o good_a and_o just_a but_o also_o may_v merit_v justification_n and_o life_n but_o of_o this_o blindness_n of_o the_o jew_n we_o shall_v speak_v more_o at_o large_a hereafter_o thus_o far_o of_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o
under_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n in_o respect_n of_o we_o for_o be_v unite_v to_o that_o divine_a nature_n it_o be_v become_v a_o mediator_n for_o we_o to_o make_v intercession_n and_o peace_n between_o god_n offend_v and_o man_n offend_v for_o christ_n our_o mediator_n albeit_o he_o be_v god_n and_o man_n in_o that_o personal_a union_n yet_o be_v he_o make_v subject_a to_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n and_o to_o the_o course_n of_o the_o law_n for_o we_o proper_o in_o respect_n of_o his_o humane_a nature_n that_o as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v he_o may_v redeem_v we_o from_o the_o law_n and_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n see_v gal._n 4._o 4._o and_o 5._o after_o that_o the_o fullness_n of_o time_n be_v come_v god_n send_v his_o son_n make_v of_o awoman_n make_v subject_a to_o the_o not_o keep_v for_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n you_o have_v together_o with_o the_o promise_n of_o life_n to_o he_o who_o do_v well_o a_o commination_n of_o everlasting_a death_n to_o he_o who_o do_v not_o well_o for_o this_o cause_n christ_n our_o mediator_n both_o do_v well_o according_a to_o the_o promise_n &_o die_v also_o according_a to_o the_o curse_n denounce_v wherefore_o we_o see_v christ_n in_o two_o respect_n to_o wit_n in_o do_v &_o suffer_v subject_a to_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n &_o to_o have_v most_o perfect_o fulfil_v it_o &_o that_o for_o our_o sake_n who_o mediator_n he_o be_v become_v it_o may_v be_v demand_v have_v it_o not_o be_v sufficient_a for_o our_o good_a and_o to_o the_o end_n he_o may_v redeem_v we_o if_o he_o have_v only_o live_v well_o the_o justice_n of_o god_n do_v require_v for_o our_o breach_n of_o god_n covenant_n that_o we_o shall_v be_v punish_v with_o death_n eternal_a according_a to_o the_o condition_n denounce_v and_o annex_v to_o the_o promise_n of_o that_o covenant_n therefore_o no_o good_a work_n of_o our_o own_o or_o of_o any_o mediator_n for_o we_o after_o the_o breach_n of_o that_o covenant_n of_o work_n can_v have_v satisfy_v the_o justice_n of_o god_n which_o of_o necessity_n after_o asort_v require_v the_o punishment_n and_o death_n of_o the_o offender_n or_o certain_o of_o some_o mediator_n in_o his_o steed_n if_o then_o all_o the_o good_a &_o holy_a work_n of_o the_o mediator_n can_v not_o satisfy_v that_o wrath_n and_o justice_n of_o god_n for_o sin_n it_o be_v clear_a they_o can_v not_o meritany_n new_a grace_n or_o mercy_n of_o god_n for_o us._n but_o you_o will_v say_v that_o the_o good_a and_o holy_a work_n of_o christ_n our_o mediator_n have_v wrought_v some_o part_n at_o least_o of_o that_o satisfaction_n whereby_o god_n justice_n be_v appease_v for_o we_o and_o some_o part_n of_o that_o merit_n whereby_o god_n favour_n be_v purchase_v for_o we_o i_o answer_v these_o work_n do_v serve_v proper_o for_o no_o part_n of_o satisfaction_n or_o merit_n for_o we_o for_o that_o to_o speak_v proper_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o passion_n only_o do_v satisfy_v god_n justice_n and_o merit_v his_o mercy_n for_o us._n if_o any_o will_v yet_o further_o demand_n may_v we_o not_o divide_v the_o satisfaction_n and_o merit_n of_o christ_n into_o his_o do_n and_o suffering_n that_o we_o may_v speak_v on_o this_o manner_n christ_n by_o his_o death_n and_o passion_n have_v satisfy_v god_n justice_n and_o by_o his_o good_a and_o holy_a work_n he_o have_v merit_v christ_n which_o he_o obtain_v when_o in_o his_o passion_n he_o satisfy_v his_o father_n wrath_n this_o be_v our_o righteousness_n for_o we_o may_v say_v that_o either_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n or_o his_o satisfaction_n or_o his_o merit_n or_o his_o obedience_n or_o his_o righteousness_n be_v impute_v unto_o we_o for_o righteousness_n for_o all_o these_o be_v take_v for_o one_o and_o the_o same_o thing_n but_o here_o it_o may_v be_v reply_v if_o the_o work_n of_o christ_n can_v proper_o procure_v for_o we_o any_o satisfaction_n nor_o merit_n nor_o any_o part_n of_o satisfaction_n or_o merit_n than_o it_o may_v be_v demand_v what_o have_v be_v and_o what_o be_v the_o use_n of_o christ_n work_n or_o of_o his_o active_a obedience_n or_o of_o the_o obedience_n of_o his_o life_n i_o answer_v that_o the_o holiness_n of_o the_o person_n christ_n the_o active_a obedience_n of_o christ_n or_o the_o righteousness_n and_o holiness_n of_o his_o person_n and_o life_n how_o it_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o the_o satisfactory_a and_o meritorious_a passion_n of_o christ_n of_o christ_n and_o of_o his_o nature_n divine_a and_o humane_a and_o of_o his_o work_n be_v the_o very_a ground_n or_o foundation_n of_o the_o satisfaction_n and_o merit_n which_o we_o have_v in_o the_o passion_n of_o christ_n that_o be_v the_o excellency_n and_o worthiness_n of_o that_o person_n and_o of_o his_o mediator_n wherefore_o if_o you_o respect_v either_o the_o ground_n or_o condition_n or_o promise_v of_o the_o free_a covenant_n christ_n can_v not_o be_v say_v to_o be_v under_o it_o and_o thus_o galathian_o his_v disputation_n be_v against_o such_o jew_n as_o be_v not_o content_a with_o christ_n only_o but_o will_v have_v christ_n and_o the_o law_n join_v together_o thus_o far_o of_o the_o comparison_n between_o paul_n and_o we_o on_o the_o one_o side_n the_o old_a jew_n and_o the_o papist_n on_o the_o other_o now_o because_o it_o will_v be_v demand_v what_o paul_n think_v of_o the_o work_n of_o regeneration_n and_o what_o we_o and_o what_o the_o adversary_n think_v also_o therefore_o i_o will_v touch_v this_o question_n in_o few_o word_n here_o then_o some_o one_o will_v say_v do_v paul_n then_o in_o that_o disputation_n to_o the_o rom._n and_o to_o the_o galathian_o oppugn_v the_o work_n of_o grace_n and_o regeneration_n i_o answer_v paul_n chief_a purpose_n in_o that_o
