3._o other_o say_v we_o trust_v in_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n and_o in_o this_o i_o be_o to_o speak_v to_o two_o sort_n first_o those_o that_o be_v most_o gross_o ignorant_a that_o have_v no_o other_o ground_n to_o hope_v for_o pardon_n of_o sin_n but_o because_o they_o hear_v that_o god_n be_v a_o merciful_a god_n know_v thus_o much_o that_o notwithstanding_o what_o you_o hear_v of_o god_n that_o he_o be_v merciful_a and_o not_o will_v that_o man_n shall_v perish_v yet_o the_o scripture_n reveal_v clear_o to_o we_o that_o notwithstanding_o god_n be_v gracious_a and_o merciful_a yet_o the_o great_a part_n of_o the_o world_n perish_v in_o their_o sin_n there_o be_v nothing_o more_o clear_a than_o this_o that_o most_o people_n in_o the_o world_n do_v perish_v and_o therefore_o to_o say_v upon_o and_o do_v not_o build_v upon_o the_o rock_n christ_n for_o the_o pardon_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o justification_n of_o their_o soul_n before_o god_n and_o here_o they_o fail_v and_o this_o be_v their_o undo_n their_o mistake_n in_o this_o and_o yet_o it_o be_v most_o sure_a that_o every_o one_o of_o we_o will_v mistake_v in_o this_o if_o god_n do_v not_o reveal_v in_o the_o gospel_n another_o way_n to_o receive_v pardon_n and_o justification_n in_o his_o son_n we_o shall_v certain_o all_o of_o we_o rest_n here_o and_o go_v no_o further_o no_o man_n or_o woman_n in_o the_o world_n that_o never_o hear_v the_o gospel_n go_v further_a than_o this_o and_o so_o far_o one_o may_v go_v without_o the_o gospel_n we_o may_v dig_v deep_a cast_v out_o the_o old_a rubbish_n and_o bring_v in_o new_a earth_n this_o we_o may_v do_v and_o not_o hear_v of_o the_o gospel_n and_o therefore_o we_o have_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o cause_n to_o bless_v god_n that_o we_o may_v hear_v the_o mystery_n of_o the_o gospel_n open_v unto_o we_o for_o certain_o we_o shall_v else_o go_v no_o further_o and_o if_o we_o go_v no_o further_o we_o shall_v certain_o perish_v and_o therefore_o if_o we_o go_v but_o thus_o far_o it_o be_v not_o build_v on_o the_o rock_n christ_n hence_o the_o ground_n and_o bottom_n of_o faith_n for_o justification_n can_v be_v in_o reformation_n or_o in_o any_o answerable_a degree_n in_o the_o growth_n of_o other_o grace_n as_o humility_n patience_n heavenly-mindedness_a self-denial_n and_o the_o rest_n according_a as_o your_o faith_n grow_v so_o you_o have_v a_o proportionable_a growth_n in_o all_o other_o grace_n faith_n be_v as_o the_o root_n and_o the_o more_o sap_n there_o be_v in_o the_o root_n the_o more_o will_v the_o branch_n grow_v those_o this_o work_n spend_v it_o in_o enter_v now_o into_o covenant_n with_o god_n at_o this_o present_a time_n it_o will_v be_v no_o hindrance_n to_o thou_o that_o thou_o can_v not_o find_v what_o be_v heretofore_o if_o now_o at_o this_o present_a thou_o can_v surrender_v up_o thyself_o to_o god_n in_o a_o everlasting_a covenant_n this_o be_v enough_o do_v it_o now_o if_o you_o can_v find_v your_o the_o world_n than_o sin_n against_o god_n and_o not_o only_o out_o of_o conviction_n of_o conscience_n but_o because_o you_o find_v a_o frame_n of_o spirit_n in_o your_o heart_n suitable_a thereunto_o for_o a_o hypocrite_n he_o may_v have_v conviction_n of_o conscience_n but_o the_o frame_n of_o his_o spirit_n be_v not_o suit_v thereunto_o in_o you_o there_o be_v a_o frame_n of_o spirit_n suitable_a to_o the_o conviction_n of_o conscience_n within_o you_o though_o you_o can_v remember_v you_o have_v have_v such_o sorrow_n and_o trouble_n in_o conviction_n for_o sin_n as_o other_o have_v have_v while_o they_o be_v under_o the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n yet_o you_o may_v be_v comfort_v by_o the_o present_a frame_n of_o spirit_n that_o you_o have_v and_o so_o in_o the_o like_a case_n if_o you_o can_v find_v your_o old_a evidence_n fall_v to_o work_v to_o renew_v your_o evidence_n and_o do_v not_o spend_v time_n in_o lie_v down_o under_o the_o discouragement_n of_o your_o own_o heart_n the_o six_o rule_n be_v this_o when_o you_o examine_v yourselves_o to_o find_v out_o your_o evidence_n carry_v this_o think_v along_o with_o you_o that_o you_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o god_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o this_o will_v be_v of_o marvellous_a use_n unto_o you_o perhaps_o to_o some_o these_o be_v very_o dry_a thing_n and_o they_o see_v but_o little_a in_o they_o and_o scarce_o know_v what_o they_o be_v but_o i_o hope_v there_o be_v many_o other_o that_o have_v knowledge_n of_o a_o eternal_a state_n to_o be_v between_o god_n and_o their_o soul_n i_o hope_v i_o speak_v thing_n will_v be_v very_o precious_a to_o they_o yea_o i_o say_v unto_o many_o of_o you_o for_o while_o i_o be_o in_o this_o argument_n i_o be_o speak_v to_o such_o as_o have_v have_v the_o fear_n of_o god_n fall_v upon_o their_o heart_n and_o they_o have_v make_v it_o the_o great_a business_n of_o their_o life_n above_o all_o thing_n in_o this_o world_n to_o know_v how_o term_n be_v between_o god_n and_o their_o soul_n to_o know_v how_o it_o stand_v with_o they_o for_o their_o everlasting_a estate_n i_o know_v abundance_n of_o people_n scarce_o ever_o call_v these_o thing_n in_o question_n to_o who_o these_o rule_n will_v be_v of_o little_a or_o no_o use_n at_o all_o but_o if_o i_o speak_v to_o some_o or_o any_o one_o trouble_a soul_n to_o help_v and_o direct_v they_o though_o i_o do_v no_o good_a to_o other_o i_o shall_v think_v my_o time_n well_o spend_v wherefore_o then_o in_o your_o examination_n ever_o carry_v this_o with_o you_o that_o you_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o god_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o not_o in_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n certain_o that_o many_o be_v so_o trouble_v in_o their_o conscience_n about_o their_o eternal_a estate_n it_o be_v on_o this_o ground_n because_o they_o look_v upon_o god_n in_o the_o way_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n if_o they_o find_v any_o corruption_n stir_v and_o break_v forth_o and_o temptation_n strong_a upon_o they_o they_o think_v present_o all_o be_v naught_o and_o that_o god_n will_v never_o accept_v of_o they_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n if_o we_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o god_n in_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n the_o least_o stir_v of_o corruption_n it_o be_v enough_o to_o cast_v the_o soul_n down_o into_o eternal_a horror_n as_o adam_n though_o he_o have_v never_o so_o much_o goodness_n before_o by_o the_o image_n of_o god_n upon_o he_o yet_o one_o sin_n eternal_o cast_v he_o if_o there_o have_v not_o come_v in_o a_o covenant_n of_o grace_n now_o though_o people_n will_v acknowledge_v there_o be_v a_o covenant_n of_o grace_n yet_o upon_o the_o stir_n of_o their_o corruption_n they_o carry_v it_o as_o that_o it_o serve_v for_o no_o other_o use_n than_o if_o they_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o god_n in_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n and_o as_o if_o there_o be_v no_o covenant_n of_o grace_n at_o all_o now_o what_o a_o dishonour_n be_v this_o to_o the_o riches_n of_o god_n goodness_n in_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n that_o tell_v we_o we_o be_v not_o to_o be_v judge_v for_o our_o eternal_a estate_n by_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n and_o tell_v we_o that_o he_o that_o must_v be_v our_o judge_n for_o our_o eternal_a condition_n be_v our_o advocate_n with_o the_o father_n and_o tell_v we_o also_o that_o god_n accept_v of_o the_o uprightness_n and_o the_o preach_v morality_n and_o mere_o the_o way_n of_o duty_n and_o never_o come_v to_o make_v they_o see_v clear_o the_o difference_n between_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o the_o covenant_n of_o of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n for_o it_o be_v so_o great_a a_o matter_n where_o once_o the_o soul_n understand_v the_o infinite_a breach_n make_v between_o god_n and_o it_o by_o sin_n that_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v more_o than_o a_o ordinary_a work_n to_o assure_v the_o soul_n of_o god_n reconciliation_n to_o it_o and_o nothing_o can_v do_v it_o satisfactory_o but_o the_o holy_a ghost_n he_o must_v another_o come_v to_o the_o grate_n of_o the_o prison_n and_o tell_v that_o he_o hear_v from_o the_o court_n the_o king_n have_v seal_v pardon_n and_o put_v such_o a_o one_o name_n in_o this_o be_v some_o comfort_n but_o yet_o this_o free_v he_o not_o from_o fear_n and_o doubt_n but_o now_o suppose_v the_o favourite_n of_o the_o prince_n come_v from_o the_o king_n himself_o one_o that_o be_v own_o fancy_n or_o delusion_n of_o satan_n i_o answer_v as_o we_o know_v the_o sun_n by_o its_o own_o light_n so_o we_o may_v know_v the_o spirit_n by_o its_o own_o testimony_n and_o though_o there_o be_v may_v some_o ebb_n yet_o it_o will_v rise_v again_o there_o be_v such_o a_o witness_v work_n of_o the_o spirit_n by_o a_o kind_n of_o sweet_a and_o secret_a intercourse_n between_o god_n and_o the_o soul_n whereby_o god_n overpower_n all_o doubt_n and_o fear_n though_o i_o do_v not_o say_v every_o one_o have_v it_o in_o a_o like_o sensible_a measure_n yet_o this_o i_o say_v when_o this_o full_a assurance_n come_v although_o there_o may_v be_v doubt_n and_o many_o question_n before_o in_o the_o soul_n for_o fear_v of_o be_v delude_v for_o certain_o many_o be_v deceive_v and_o delude_v yet_o then_o the_o spirit_n overpower_n all_o doubt_n and_o fear_n and_o witness_n to_o the_o soul_n it_o be_v own_o work_n do_v not_o you_o say_v because_o some_o be_v delude_v with_o fancy_n that_o there_o be_v no_o witness_n of_o the_o spirit_n when_o as_o there_o be_v scarce_o any_o point_n in_o the_o gospel_n the_o scripture_n speak_v more_o about_o than_o this_o of_o the_o witness_n of_o the_o spirit_n indeed_o they_o that_o judge_v of_o the_o mystery_n of_o the_o gospel_n by_o humane_a reason_n and_o understand_v no_o further_o than_o that_o reach_v too_o and_o that_o be_v little_o acquaint_v with_o those_o converse_v that_o be_v between_o god_n and_o a_o believe_a soul_n they_o may_v slight_v this_o witness_n of_o the_o spirit_n but_o you_o must_v know_v there_o be_v not_o any_o soul_n that_o have_v assurance_n he_o shall_v go_v to_o heaven_n but_o it_o be_v wrought_v on_o by_o a_o high_a supernatural_a and_o mysterious_a way_n and_o if_o there_o be_v no_o other_o way_n a_o great_a mystery_n christ_n incarnation_n be_v a_o great_a mystery_n so_o be_v a_o believer_n justification_n as_o well_o as_o christ_n incarnation_n so_o also_o the_o witness_n of_o on_o this_o condition_n that_o you_o behave_v yourself_o well_o and_o if_o you_o be_v find_v trip_v in_o any_o one_o thing_n i_o will_v recall_v my_o pardon_n back_o again_o it_o be_v so_o with_o a_o prince_n pardon_n a_o man_n that_o be_v pardon_v for_o his_o life_n if_o that_o man_n afterward_o offend_v perhaps_o break_v the_o peace_n which_o in_o another_o man_n will_v not_o be_v so_o great_a another_o if_o he_o strike_v a_o man_n it_o be_v but_o a_o assault_n and_o battery_n in_o he_o but_o he_o that_o have_v his_o pardon_n for_o his_o life_n for_o such_o a_o thing_n do_v by_o he_o his_o pardon_n may_v be_v revoke_v again_o and_o it_o may_v cost_v he_o his_o life_n i_o hope_v you_o will_v not_o abuse_v this_o grace_n of_o god_n i_o know_v not_o how_o to_o open_v it_o to_o believer_n but_o with_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o danger_n to_o other_o but_o how_o much_o danger_n soever_o it_o may_v be_v to_o other_o yet_o it_o must_v be_v open_v and_o deliver_v to_o believer_n it_o be_v so_o man_n and_o woman_n by_o their_o sin_n run_v into_o debt_n with_o god_n and_o though_o god_n do_v not_o call_v for_o the_o debt_n present_o yet_o they_o be_v record_v in_o heaven_n it_o be_v as_o certain_a that_o every_o sin_n of_o any_o man_n or_o woman_n be_v set_v down_o in_o god_n debt-book_n as_o any_o debt_n you_o owe_v be_v set_v down_o in_o your_o creditor_n book_n and_o as_o certain_o must_v your_o debt_n be_v call_v for_o and_o satisfaction_n and_o payment_n make_v unto_o god_n for_o they_o as_o certain_a as_o any_o tradesman_n will_v call_v for_o payment_n of_o his_o debt_n now_o this_o be_v the_o work_n of_o justification_n between_o god_n and_o your_o soul_n if_o you_o will_v know_v the_o nature_n of_o it_o when_o jesus_n christ_n see_v a_o poor_a soul_n that_o god_n the_o more_o precious_a than_o all_o the_o creature_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n god_n will_v say_v have_v i_o reveal_v such_o a_o way_n of_o be_v reconcile_v with_o my_o creature_n and_o that_o at_o such_o a_o rate_n and_o infinite_a price_n as_o the_o death_n of_o my_o own_o son_n shall_v his_o life_n and_o blood_n go_v to_o procure_v pardon_n one_o drop_n of_o which_o be_v more_o worth_a than_o you_o can_v do_v you_o think_v god_n be_v a_o merciful_a god_n and_o you_o hope_v upon_o your_o reform_v and_o perform_v duty_n of_o obedience_n that_o god_n will_v be_v pacify_v towards_o you_o for_o all_o that_o be_v amiss_o certain_o when_o you_o have_v these_o thought_n of_o god_n pardon_v grace_n you_o make_v it_o to_o be_v but_o as_o common_a and_o ordinary_a pity_n towards_o one_o in_o and_o far_o from_o a_o save_a work_n of_o repentance_n therefore_o the_o repentance_n many_o hope_n to_o have_v what_o be_v it_o when_o we_o tell_v they_o of_o their_o sin_n they_o say_v they_o hope_v to_o repent_v what_o do_v they_o mean_v why_o they_o will_v take_v the_o pleasure_n of_o sin_n and_o when_o the_o punishment_n come_v they_o will_v be_v sorry_a for_o it_o and_o repent_v of_o it_o the_o ordinary_a way_n to_o put_v man_n off_o from_o this_o plea_n be_v to_o tell_v they_o how_o do_v you_o know_v you_o shall_v live_v or_o that_o your_o heart_n shall_v not_o be_v harden_v but_o suppose_v you_o do_v live_v and_o that_o you_o have_v a_o heart_n to_o do_v as_o you_o say_v yet_o your_o repentance_n may_v fail_v you_o if_o your_o repentance_n be_v no_o other_o than_o that_o which_o come_v for_o sorrow_n of_o sin_n because_o of_o the_o punishment_n it_o will_v fail_v you_o certain_o that_o repentance_n that_o must_v go_v for_o current_n in_o heaven_n be_v of_o another_o nature_n possible_o i_o may_v show_v afterward_o what_o be_v true_a and_o false_a sorrow_n but_o for_o the_o present_a i_o shall_v show_v where_o the_o mistake_n lie_v whosoever_o therefore_o that_o build_v their_o believe_v of_o the_o pardon_n of_o their_o sin_n mere_o on_o their_o sorrow_n and_o such_o kind_n of_o sorrow_n they_o be_v like_o a_o man_n that_o will_v erect_v a_o great_a apprehension_n of_o punishment_n of_o sin_n this_o building_n will_v fall_v in_o time_n of_o straits_n and_o danger_n and_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o people_n that_o depend_v upon_o sorrow_n never_o have_v peace_n for_o how_o can_v i_o tell_v the_o measure_n of_o sorrow_n i_o be_o to_o have_v before_o peace_n be_v speak_v and_o then_o if_o they_o feel_v not_o sorrow_n they_o be_v question_v again_o it_o be_v a_o dangerous_a thing_n to_o lay_v the_o hope_n of_o pardon_n of_o sin_n upon_o our_o own_o sorrow_n where_o or_o how_o then_o shall_v we_o lay_v our_o hope_n why_o upon_o the_o sorrow_n of_o jesus_n christ_n there_o you_o shall_v find_v the_o sure_a ground_n there_o may_v be_v some_o mistake_n there_o too_o but_o for_o the_o present_a i_o shall_v not_o stay_v on_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n which_o will_v certain_o fail_v you_o a_o heathen_a may_v have_v as_o much_o to_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o his_o faith_n that_o the_o great_a creator_n of_o heaven_n and_o earth_n pity_v those_o that_o be_v in_o misery_n and_o i_o be_o a_o poor_a creature_n in_o misery_n i_o will_v cry_v to_o he_o and_o i_o will_v reform_v my_o life_n and_o i_o will_v rely_v on_o he_o thus_o far_o a_o heathen_a may_v go_v but_o the_o ground_n and_o bottom_n of_o faith_n be_v not_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n in_o general_n but_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n in_o and_o through_o a_o mediator_n observe_v a_o little_a further_o the_o ground_n of_o justify_v faith_n be_v not_o thus_o that_o god_n for_o christ_n sake_n will_v forgive_v i_o for_o what_o christ_n have_v do_v to_o purchase_v my_o pardon_n but_o there_o be_v another_o work_n of_o faith_n in_o the_o soul_n of_o believer_n though_o the_o soul_n apprehend_v it_o not_o it_o be_v not_o the_o work_n of_o faith_n in_o justification_n to_o believe_v that_o christ_n have_v pay_v so_o much_o as_o my_o debt_n come_v to_o but_o thus_o the_o work_n of_o faith_n be_v to_o bring_v the_o soul_n unto_o christ_n and_o to_o bring_v into_o a_o state_n of_o condemnation_n he_o may_v be_v bring_v into_o such_o a_o state_n that_o if_o he_o shall_v die_v at_o that_o present_a he_o shall_v perish_v but_o say_v they_o god_n do_v take_v care_n that_o he_o shall_v not_o die_v till_o there_o be_v a_o renew_n of_o a_o act_n of_o faith_n for_o pardon_n i_o answer_v there_o be_v nothing_o in_o scripture_n to_o prove_v there_o that_o waste_v a_o man_n conscience_n there_o a_o believer_n be_v bring_v into_o the_o state_n of_o condemnation_n till_o there_o be_v a_o new_a act_n of_o faith_n renew_v for_o pardon_n i_o answer_v if_o any_o one_o sin_n bring_v a_o believer_n into_o the_o state_n of_o condemnation_n after_o conversion_n where_o shall_v we_o put_v the_o limit_n as_o to_o say_v if_o you_o go_v but_o thus_o far_o you_o be_v not_o in_o a_o state_n of_o condemnation_n but_o if_o you_o go_v a_o letter_n further_o you_o be_v god_n put_v no_o such_o limit_n in_o scripture_n but_o all_o sin_n in_o its_o own_o nature_n bring_v into_o a_o state_n of_o condemnation_n and_o yet_o no_o sin_n bring_v a_o believer_n into_o the_o state_n of_o condemnation_n therefore_o this_o be_v a_o great_a mystery_n of_o god_n in_o the_o pardon_v of_o sin_n when_o god_n pardon_v the_o sin_n of_o a_o believer_n he_o do_v not_o only_o pardon_v what_o he_o have_v do_v at_o present_a but_o for_o what_o he_o shall_v do_v he_o lay_v in_o a_o pardon_n and_o christ_n have_v purchase_v it_o it_o for_o we_o for_o all_o sin_n yet_o to_o come_v it_o be_v like_o a_o son_n run_v into_o arrear_n his_o father_n come_v and_o pay_v his_o debt_n but_o because_o he_o see_v his_o son_n will_v run_v further_o into_o arrear_n he_o lay_v in_o so_o much_o as_o will_v pay_v all_o for_o time_n to_o come_v that_o if_o he_o run_v into_o arrear_n he_o shall_v not_o be_v cast_v into_o prison_n just_o so_o it_o be_v with_o god_n god_n pardon_v all_o our_o sin_n at_o first_o and_o then_o he_o lay_v up_o a_o pardon_n that_o if_o we_o run_v into_o arrear_n we_o shall_v not_o lie_v in_o prison_n to_o be_v condemn_v and_o suffer_v for_o they_o this_o be_v a_o great_a mystery_n and_o they_o that_o teach_v otherwise_o rob_v the_o people_n of_o god_n of_o abundance_n of_o comfort_n that_o otherwise_o they_o may_v have_v be_v this_o truth_n make_v clear_o know_v unto_o they_o object_n be_v not_o this_o doctrine_n a_o doctrine_n of_o liberty_n if_o they_o have_v knowledge_n that_o god_n when_o he_o pardon_v for_o what_o sin_n be_v past_a and_o lay_v in_o a_o pardon_n for_o what_o sin_n be_v yet_o to_o come_v may_v not_o
