it_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o a_o man_n true_o to_o know_v god_n without_o the_o love_n of_o he_o and_o the_o sense_n of_o his_o love_n to_o the_o soul_n a_o desire_n of_o such_o a_o knowledge_n though_o i_o dare_v not_o term_v it_o a_o lust_n of_o the_o mind_n yet_o it_o be_v such_o a_o desire_n as_o be_v not_o right_o qualify_v to_o desire_v to_o know_v a_o thing_n fit_a to_o be_v know_v mere_o because_o i_o will_v know_v it_o it_o be_v but_o a_o lust_n of_o the_o mind_n and_o such_o a_o knowledge_n as_o only_o puff_v up_o now_o any_o man_n may_v rational_o conclude_v that_o such_o desire_n of_o the_o mind_n as_o these_o be_v even_o condemn_v of_o reason_n itself_o as_o irregular_a and_o useless_a it_o be_v true_a that_o whatsoever_o be_v a_o object_n of_o our_o knowledge_n may_v be_v a_o object_n of_o our_o desire_n of_o knowledge_n if_o not_o forbid_v by_o he_o that_o give_v the_o power_n if_o act_v with_o moderation_n and_o sobriety_n if_o subordinate_v yet_o condemn_v by_o sound_a reason_n the_o passion_n of_o anger_n be_v plant_v in_o the_o mind_n and_o be_v good_a when_o act_v upon_o a_o right_a object_n and_o in_o a_o due_a measure_n ephes_n 4.26_o but_o this_o passion_n be_v overacted_n it_o become_v putrify_v and_o a_o lust_n of_o the_o mind_n it_o than_o turn_v into_o malice_n to_o envy_n the_o spirit_n that_o be_v in_o we_o lust_v after_o envy_n jam._n 4.5_o into_o desire_n of_o revenge_n and_o thus_o lust_n conceive_v upon_o this_o passion_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o bring_v forth_o sin._n now_o all_o these_o be_v evident_o conclusion_n or_o judgement_n upon_o those_o action_n and_o principle_n thus_o compare_v of_o absolution_n or_o approbation_n or_o of_o condemnation_n and_o rejection_n 5._o the_o motion_n of_o the_o conscience_n towards_o the_o soul_n upon_o this_o conviction_n viz._n persuasion_n or_o dissuasion_n to_o or_o from_o the_o act_n in_o question_n if_o future_a stir_v or_o comfort_v the_o soul_n in_o reference_n to_o the_o act_n if_o past_a thy_o conscience_n be_v that_o cart_n by_o which_o thou_o do_v or_o shall_v steer_v thy_o course_n in_o this_o world_n towards_o the_o other_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v of_o high_a concernment_n to_o have_v a_o eye_n upon_o it_o and_o therefore_o 1._o learn_v to_o furnish_v it_o with_o practical_a principle_n of_o truth_n and_o soundness_n these_o principle_n be_v for_o any_o thing_n that_o appear_v to_o i_o extrinsical_a to_o the_o soul_n the_o dictate_v of_o the_o divine_a law_n and_o will_n convey_v into_o the_o conscience_n either_o by_o the_o immediate_a revelation_n and_o demonstration_n of_o god_n unto_o the_o soul_n thus_o to_o adam_n in_o a_o perfect_a measure_n and_o to_o those_o holy_a man_n of_o god_n the_o patriarch_n prophet_n and_o apostle_n or_o by_o the_o course_n and_o way_n of_o his_o providence_n either_o by_o unwritten_a tradition_n rom._n 2.15_o and_o this_o be_v a_o more_o uncertain_a dispensation_n because_o more_o easy_a to_o be_v corrupt_v by_o the_o practice_n and_o teach_n of_o man_n which_o be_v so_o mingle_v with_o it_o that_o it_o be_v very_o hard_o to_o discover_v the_o wheat_n from_o the_o chaff_n so_o that_o if_o we_o shall_v now_o go_v to_o gather_v up_o principle_n for_o the_o conscience_n out_o of_o the_o practice_n of_o man_n or_o nation_n or_o the_o collection_n of_o humane_a law_n or_o author_n we_o shall_v gather_v up_o principle_n full_a of_o uncertainty_n contrariety_n and_o inconsistency_n among_o themselves_o and_o such_o of_o they_o as_o have_v any_o sound_a conformity_n to_o truth_n be_v so_o general_a that_o several_a man_n or_o the_o same_o man_n at_o several_a time_n or_o upon_o several_a occasion_n will_v deduce_v from_o they_o a_o justification_n of_o contrary_a practice_n as_o we_o see_v be_v do_v among_o divers_a man_n that_o admit_v the_o same_o general_a principle_n of_o practice_n and_o yet_o upon_o the_o same_o principle_n their_o conscience_n when_o they_o come_v to_o particular_a action_n act_n quite_o contrary_a one_o to_o the_o other_o the_o great_a and_o merciful_a god_n have_v therefore_o by_o a_o his_o meditation_n of_o it_o a_o spirit_n of_o life_n and_o light_n that_o show_v he_o large_a dimension_n of_o it_o than_o can_v be_v find_v by_o the_o bare_a strength_n of_o his_o natural_a understanding_n 2._o take_v leisure_n upon_o all_o thy_o action_n and_o purpose_n to_o acquaint_v thy_o conscience_n with_o they_o that_o so_o thy_o conscience_n may_v have_v time_n to_o deliberate_v and_o to_o compare_v it_o with_o its_o principle_n the_o word_n of_o god._n precipitancy_n and_o hastiness_n in_o action_n rob_v the_o conscience_n of_o that_o employment_n which_o god_n have_v give_v please_v 2._o it_o turn_v that_o which_o will_v be_v thy_o counsellor_n into_o thy_o accuser_n and_o tormentor_n thou_o refuse_v to_o give_v her_o time_n to_o do_v her_o office_n before_o thy_o action_n and_o therefore_o it_o will_v be_v bold_a to_o take_v time_n to_o do_v her_o office_n after_o she_o can_v be_v admit_v to_o advise_v thou_o but_o she_o will_v take_v liberty_n to_o accuse_v check_v almost_o at_o any_o thing_n than_o to_o be_v at_o quiet_a with_o a_o dull_a and_o stupid_a conscience_n that_o will_v down_o with_o any_o thing_n it_o may_v be_v it_o will_v be_v somewhat_o troublesome_a but_o it_o be_v safe_a and_o thou_o shall_v find_v comfort_n in_o forbear_v of_o that_o which_o thy_o tender_a conscience_n wish_v thou_o to_o forego_v and_o be_v able_a abundant_o to_o satisfy_v that_o trouble_n which_o thou_o be_v put_v to_o by_o thy_o forbearance_n the_o conscience_n of_o thy_o integrity_n will_v be_v more_o satisfactory_a to_o thou_o than_o the_o curiosity_n of_o his_o conscience_n aright_o with_o the_o word_n of_o truth_n do_v honest_o and_o sincere_o follow_v the_o direction_n of_o it_o shall_v be_v sure_a not_o to_o err_v long_o or_o dangerous_o god_n have_v place_v the_o conscience_n in_o our_o breast_n as_o his_o own_o vicegerent_n look_v upon_o such_o a_o subjection_n to_o the_o conscience_n as_o a_o obedience_n to_o himself_o and_o his_o own_o authority_n and_o will_v in_o due_a time_n by_o his_o own_o power_n and_o spirit_n enlighten_v and_o guide_v such_o a_o conscience_n to_o perform_v his_o office_n regular_o and_o effectual_o 5._o as_o a_o consequence_n of_o the_o former_a when_o a_o question_n arise_v in_o thy_o conscience_n whether_o such_o a_o thing_n may_v be_v safe_o omit_v which_o thou_o be_v sure_o may_v be_v safe_o do_v or_o whether_o such_o a_o thing_n may_v be_v safe_o do_v which_o thou_o be_v sure_o may_v be_v safe_o forbear_v put_v not_o thyself_o nor_o thy_o conscience_n upon_o a_o dispute_n where_o thou_o need_v not_o but_o be_v content_a rather_o to_o abridge_v thyself_o from_o a_o liberty_n that_o may_v be_v probable_o lawful_a than_o to_o put_v thyself_o upon_o a_o action_n or_o omission_n that_o may_v at_o least_o be_v disputable_o sinful_a and_o so_o much_o the_o rather_o because_o thy_o heart_n be_v deceitful_a and_o as_o it_o love_v liberty_n so_o it_o find_v out_o sophistry_n enough_o to_o corrupt_v thy_o judgement_n and_o thy_o conscience_n if_o thou_o give_v way_n unto_o it_o there_o be_v scarce_o the_o gross_a sin_n that_o ever_o any_o man_n commit_v but_o his_o heart_n find_v out_o some_o reason_n to_o bribe_v or_o quiet_a his_o conscience_n in_o the_o commission_n of_o it_o rather_o submit_v to_o the_o still_a voice_n of_o thy_o conscience_n in_o the_o restraint_n even_o of_o thy_o lawful_a liberty_n though_o it_o give_v thou_o not_o a_o reason_n for_o it_o than_o listen_v to_o the_o reason_n of_o thy_o heart_n for_o the_o allowance_n of_o it_o suspect_v she_o for_o she_o speak_v in_o she_o own_o cause_n and_o be_v partial_a and_o deceitful_a this_o on_o the_o one_o hand_n may_v be_v a_o safe_a rule_n for_o we_o touch_v stage-play_n long_a hair_n game_n usury_n etc._n no_o rule_n to_o guide_v thou_o no_o circumstance_n that_o throw_v into_o the_o scale_n can_v take_v away_o the_o indifferency_n of_o either_o side_n it_o be_v a_o safe_a rule_n though_o not_o always_o necessary_a to_o forsake_v that_o which_o the_o inclination_n of_o thy_o own_o natural_a appetite_n most_o prompt_v thou_o to_o the_o reason_n be_v that_o which_o be_v before_o mention_v the_o heart_n be_v apt_a to_o magnify_v those_o argument_n that_o conduce_v to_o the_o execution_n of_o that_o which_o suit_v with_o thy_o sinful_a appetite_n and_o to_o lessen_v and_o slight_v those_o that_o make_v against_o it_o so_o that_o in_o a_o decision_n of_o indifferency_n in_o such_o a_o competition_n a_o man_n may_v in_o a_o more_o impartial_a judgement_n conclude_v the_o thing_n to_o be_v therefore_o not_o indifferent_a but_o sinful_a because_o thy_o sinful_a heart_n can_v but_o bring_v up_o what_o she_o love_v but_o to_o a_o equal_a balance_n thou_o must_v therefore_o in_o
