be_v all_o present_a together_o in_o he_o that_o be_v justify_v yet_o they_o justify_v not_o all_o together_o so_o that_o no_o man_n must_v expect_v this_o great_a blessing_n of_o justification_n unless_o together_o with_o faith_n he_o have_v repentance_n hope_n love_n dread_a and_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n which_o suppose_v that_o a_o man_n must_v be_v a_o true_a penitent_n and_o a_o true_a lover_n of_o god_n before_o he_o be_v justify_v though_o repentance_n and_o hope_n etc._n etc._n have_v no_o actual_a influence_n upon_o our_o justification_n yet_o they_o be_v causae_fw-la sine_fw-la quibus_fw-la non_fw-la such_o cause_n without_o which_o the_o effect_n will_v never_o follow_v which_o necessary_o entitle_v they_o to_o the_o nature_n of_o condition_n for_o a_o condition_n which_o have_v no_o natural_a or_o meritorious_a efficiency_n be_v only_o a_o causa_fw-la sine_fw-la quâ_fw-la non_fw-la and_o though_o it_o be_v true_a that_o the_o accidental_a presence_n of_o one_o thing_n presence_n of_o some_o internal_a grace_n and_o virtue_n together_o with_o faith_n in_o he_o who_o be_v to_o be_v justify_v she_o plain_o acknowledge_v that_o we_o shall_v never_o be_v justify_v without_o they_o though_o not_o for_o they_o which_o be_v all_o that_o any_o one_o desire_n who_o deny_v and_o reject_v the_o merit_n of_o good_a work_n and_o as_o these_o internal_a act_n of_o make_v good_a by_o do_v of_o they_o that_o be_v to_o be_v justify_v by_o they_o and_o this_o we_o be_v teach_v be_v so_o necessary_a that_o unless_o these_o good_a work_n follow_v as_o the_o necessary_a fruit_n of_o faith_n we_o shall_v loose_v our_o justification_n again_o as_o you_o hear_v above_o in_o what_o sense_n then_o do_v our_o church_n reject_v good_a work_n and_o attribute_v our_o justification_n to_o faith_n alone_o and_o that_o we_o be_v tell_v over_o and_o over_o in_o the_o most_o plain_a and_o express_a word_n that_o it_o be_v only_o to_o take_v away_o the_o merit_n of_o good_a work_n and_o to_o attribute_v our_o justification_n to_o the_o free_a mercy_n of_o god_n and_o merit_n of_o christ_n not_o to_o our_o own_o work_n and_o deserve_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o justification_n by_o work_n be_v so_o often_o oppose_v to_o our_o justification_n by_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n and_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n which_o be_v inconsistent_a in_o no_o other_o sense_n but_o that_o of_o merit_n for_o though_o good_a work_n be_v suppose_v the_o necessary_a condition_n of_o justification_n yet_o if_o they_o be_v acknowledge_v so_o imperfect_a as_o not_o to_o merit_v faith_n be_v alone_o in_o man_n without_o true_a repentance_n hope_n charity_n dread_a and_o fear_v of_o god_n at_o any_o time_n and_o season_n nor_o when_o they_o say_v we_o be_v justify_v free_o they_o mean_v not_o that_o we_o shall_v or_o may_v afterward_o be_v idle_a and_o that_o nothing_o shall_v be_v require_v on_o our_o part_n afterward_o neither_o they_o mean_v not_o so_o to_o be_v can_v be_v able_a to_o have_v or_o to_o do_v for_o to_o deserve_v the_o same_o christ_n himself_o only_o be_v the_o cause_n meritorious_a thereof_o this_o be_v so_o express_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o homily_n that_o i_o need_v not_o multiply_v testimony_n for_o the_o proof_n of_o it_o from_o whence_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o our_o church_n own_v the_o necessity_n of_o good_a work_n to_o reform_a church_n express_o reject_v work_n in_o the_o matter_n of_o justification_n under_o the_o notion_n of_o merit_n and_o deserve_a in_o which_o sense_n alone_o they_o be_v injurious_a to_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n from_o whence_o we_o argue_v that_o they_o own_o the_o necessity_n of_o work_n upon_o all_o other_o account_n and_o reject_v only_o the_o merit_n of_o they_o some_o tell_v we_o that_o we_o shall_v rather_o argue_v that_o they_o put_v no_o difference_n between_o work_n and_o the_o merit_n of_o work_n in_o the_o matter_n of_o justification_n but_o equal_o reject_v they_o both_o but_o pray_v why_o so_o true_o for_o no_o reason_n that_o i_o know_v but_o that_o it_o best_o serve_v their_o hypothesis_n they_o acknowledge_v that_o there_o be_v a_o difference_n between_o work_n and_o the_o merit_n of_o work_n but_o will_v by_o no_o mean_n own_o that_o

and_o imperfect_a of_o a_o new_a and_o spiritual_a life_n and_o the_o best_a qualification_n for_o future_a glory_n and_o happiness_n before_o some_o external_a rite_n and_o usage_n which_o have_v no_o real_a worth_n be_v there_o no_o reason_n why_o god_n shall_v prefer_v the_o substantial_a act_n of_o piety_n and_o charity_n which_o be_v useful_a to_o man_n and_o a_o imitation_n of_o the_o bounty_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n before_o pick_v up_o straw_n and_o such_o useless_a and_o ludicrous_a employment_n be_v there_o no_o difference_n between_o work_n which_o be_v imperfect_o good_a and_o work_n which_o have_v no_o goodness_n in_o they_o but_o i_o think_v it_o be_v a_o work_n of_o supererogation_n though_o not_o very_o meritorious_a to_o answer_v such_o a_o argument_n but_o now_o in_o requital_n of_o this_o argument_n against_o the_o distinction_n between_o work_n and_o merit_n i_o shall_v give_v another_o for_o it_o and_o that_o be_v that_o our_o church_n make_v nothing_o of_o the_o article_n or_o homily_n of_o our_o church_n which_o be_v a_o good_a argument_n that_o our_o church_n know_v no_o such_o distinction_n for_o if_o she_o have_v we_o can_v but_o think_v that_o she_o will_v have_v make_v use_n of_o it_o in_o express_a term_n at_o one_o time_n or_o other_o there_o be_v the_o same_o occasion_n for_o it_o then_o that_o there_o be_v now_o the_o sermon_n or_o homily_n of_o justification_n be_v call_v the_o sermon_n of_o salvation_n and_o these_o word_n justification_n and_o salvation_n be_v promiscuous_o use_v in_o the_o homily_n itself_o thus_o in_o the_o three_o part_n of_o the_o sermon_n of_o salvation_n we_o have_v these_o word_n at_o the_o beginning_n it_o have_v be_v manifest_o declare_v unto_o you_o that_o no_o man_n can_v fulfil_v the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o by_o the_o law_n all_o man_n be_v condemn_v whereupon_o it_o follow_v necessary_o that_o some_o other_o thing_n shall_v be_v require_v for_o our_o salvation_n than_o the_o law_n and_o that_o be_v a_o true_a and_o lively_a faith_n in_o christ_n bring_v forth_o good_a work_n and_o a_o life_n according_a to_o god_n commandment_n where_o salvation_n must_v of_o necessity_n signify_v what_o at_o other_o time_n be_v call_v justification_n for_o our_o church_n tell_v we_o that_o we_o can_v be_v save_v by_o the_o work_v of_o the_o law_n because_o we_o can_v fulfil_v the_o law_n which_o be_v the_o reason_n at_o other_o time_n assign_v why_o we_o can_v be_v justify_v by_o the_o law_n because_o all_o man_n be_v sinner_n and_o offender_n against_o god_n and_o breaker_n of_o his_o law_n therefore_o can_v no_o man_n by_o his_o own_o act_n word_n and_o deed_n seem_v they_o never_o so_o good_a be_v justify_v and_o make_v righteous_a before_o god_n which_o be_v the_o very_a first_o word_n of_o the_o sermon_n of_o salvation_n and_o what_o be_v here_o require_v for_o our_o salvation_n be_v the_o very_a same_o which_o in_o other_o place_n our_o church_n require_v to_o our_o justification_n viz._n a_o true_a and_o lively_a faith_n in_o christ_n bring_v forth_o good_a work_n and_o a_o life_n according_a to_o god_n commandment_n thus_o in_o the_o first_o part_n of_o the_o sermon_n of_o good_a work_n our_o church_n cite_v those_o word_n of_o s._n chrysostom_n i_o can_v show_v a_o man_n that_o by_o faith_n without_o work_n live_v &_o come_v to_o heaven_n but_o without_o faith_n never_o any_o man_n have_v life_n the_o thief_n that_o be_v hang_v when_o christ_n suffer_v do_v believe_v only_o and_o the_o most_o merciful_a god_n justify_v he_o this_o be_v a_o that_o they_o be_v essential_a to_o a_o justify_v faith_n and_o must_v be_v present_a as_o antecedent_n qualification_n or_o condition_n without_o which_o god_n will_v not_o justify_v we_o as_o appear_v from_o what_o i_o have_v discourse_v above_o concern_v the_o nature_n of_o justify_v faith_n which_o include_v repentance_n and_o the_o love_n of_o god_n etc._n etc._n as_o antecedent_o necessary_a to_o our_o embrace_v the_o promise_n of_o pardon_n and_o forgiveness_n which_o be_v not_o the_o first_o but_o the_o last_o and_o complete_n act_n of_o faith_n for_o if_o these_o good_a work_n be_v not_o one_o way_n or_o other_o necessary_a to_o our_o justification_n no_o reason_n can_v be_v assign_v why_o they_o shall_v be_v present_a in_o he_o that_o be_v justify_v for_o faith_n may_v then_o justify_v alone_o without_o the_o presence_n as_o well_o as_o without_o the_o merit_n and_o efficacy_n of_o our_o good_a work_n and_o therefore_o when_o faith_n be_v say_v to_o shut_v out_o these_o good_a work_n from_o the_o office_n of_o justify_v that_o though_o they_o be_v all_o present_a yet_o they_o do_v not_o justify_v all_o together_o the_o design_n be_v not_o to_o deny_v again_o faith_n work_n and_o all_o other_o virtue_n faith_n do_v not_o justify_v as_o our_o own_o act_n that_o be_v it_o do_v not_o merit_v our_o justification_n as_o it_o must_v do_v if_o it_o justify_v as_o our_o own_o act_n which_o in_o the_o sense_n of_o our_o church_n signify_v that_o we_o do_v something_o so_o meritorious_a as_o to_o deserve_v justification_n at_o god_n hand_n but_o now_o justification_n 2._o be_v the_o office_n of_o god_n only_o and_o be_v not_o a_o thing_n which_o we_o render_v to_o he_o that_o be_v we_o can_v offer_v he_o nothing_o of_o our_o own_o to_o merit_v our_o justification_n but_o which_o we_o receive_v from_o he_o not_o which_o we_o give_v to_o he_o but_o which_o we_o take_v of_o he_o by_o his_o free_a mercy_n and_o by_o the_o only_a merit_n of_o his_o dear_o belove_a son_n our_o only_a redeemer_n justifier_n and_o saviour_n jesus_n christ._n but_o for_o this_o reason_n faith_n only_o be_v say_v to_o justify_v and_o to_o shut_v out_o our_o own_o work_n and_o itself_o also_o consider_v as_o our_o own_o act_n from_o the_o office_n of_o justify_v because_o though_o it_o strong_o enforce_v the_o necessity_n of_o good_a work_n yet_o in_o its_o own_o nature_n it_o exclude_v all_o opinion_n of_o merit_n and_o desert_n for_o faith_n have_v a_o necessary_a respect_n to_o the_o promise_n of_o mercy_n and_o forgiveness_n and_o whoever_o acknowledge_v that_o he_o owe_v his_o justification_n to_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n who_o for_o the_o sake_n of_o christ_n pardon_v his_o sin_n and_o reward_v his_o imperfect_a service_n as_o all_o those_o must_v do_v who_o hope_v to_o be_v save_v by_o faith_n in_o the_o notion_n of_o our_o church_n do_v plain_o confess_v that_o his_o work_n be_v imperfect_a and_o can_v deserve_v his_o justification_n which_o take_v away_o all_o opinion_n of_o merit_n from_o ourselves_o and_o attribute_n the_o glory_n of_o all_o to_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n and_o the_o merit_n of_o christ._n i_o shall_v only_o observe_v three_o thing_n from_o this_o discourse_n which_o be_v very_o material_a to_o our_o present_a purpose_n first_o that_o our_o church_n be_v not_o acquaint_v with_o that_o distinction_n in_o the_o modern_a sense_n of_o it_o that_o we_o be_v justify_v fide_fw-la solâ_fw-la but_o not_o solitariâ_fw-la by_o faith_n alone_o but_o not_o by_o that_o faith_n which_o be_v alone_o the_o meaning_n of_o which_o according_a to_o some_o modern_a divine_n be_v this_o that_o we_o be_v justify_v only_o by_o that_o particular_a act_n of_o faith_n which_o apprehend_v the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n and_o rely_v and_o roll_v itself_o on_o christ_n for_o salvation_n and_o apply_v his_o merit_n and_o righteousness_n to_o the_o soul_n without_o any_o regard_n to_o repentance_n and_o the_o love_n of_o god_n or_o any_o other_o grace_n or_o virtue_n that_o though_o at_o the_o same_o time_n god_n infuse_v the_o habit_n of_o all_o grace_n and_o virtue_n into_o a_o justify_v person_n yet_o in_o the_o act_n of_o justify_v he_o have_v no_o regard_n at_o all_o to_o repentance_n or_o any_o other_o grace_n but_o we_o be_v justify_v in_o order_n of_o nature_n before_o these_o be_v infuse_v into_o we_o and_o without_o any_o respect_n to_o they_o and_o some_o man_n will_v willing_o affix_v this_o notion_n as_o absurd_a as_o it_o be_v to_o our_o church_n because_o she_o only_o require_v the_o presence_n of_o these_o grace_n and_o virtue_n in_o the_o justify_v person_n but_o shut_v they_o out_o from_o the_o office_n of_o justify_v but_o i_o have_v make_v it_o appear_v that_o these_o word_n admit_v a_o better_a sense_n and_o that_o justification_n by_o faith_n only_o in_o the_o modern_a notion_n of_o it_o so_o as_o to_o exclude_v the_o antecedent_n necessity_n of_o repentance_n or_o any_o other_o internal_a grace_n or_o virtue_n be_v contrary_a to_o the_o constant_a doctrine_n of_o our_o church_n which_o require_v the_o presence_n of_o these_o grace_n as_o antecedent_n condition_n or_o qualification_n though_o it_o shut_v they_o out_o from_o be_v the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o justification_n and_o to_o confirm_v this_o i_o observe_v second_o that_o our_o church_n do_v not_o attribute_v our_o justification_n to_o any_o particular_a act_n of_o faith_n she_o frequent_o indeed_o inculcate_n the_o embrace_v of_o the_o promise_n of_o pardon_n and_o forgiveness_n as_o essential_a to_o a_o justify_v faith_n but_o the_o reason_n of_o that_o be_v not_o because_o that_o particular_a act_n justify_v we_o but_o to_o attribute_v our_o justification_n not_o to_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o own_o work_n but_o to_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n but_o she_o express_o affirm_v that_o faith_n do_v not_o justify_v as_o our_o own_o act_n that_o justification_n be_v not_o the_o office_n of_o man_n but_o of_o god_n and_o if_o we_o be_v not_o justify_v by_o faith_n as_o our_o own_o act_n much_o less_o can_v any_o particular_a act_n of_o faith_n which_o if_o it_o be_v consider_v as_o a_o act_n must_v be_v consider_v as_o our_o own_o act_n justify_v which_o overthrow_v that_o instrumentality_n of_o faith_n in_o justification_n which_o these_o man_n talk_v of_o but_o the_o plain_a meaning_n of_o our_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n only_o be_v this_o that_o god_n will_v pardon_v our_o sin_n and_o reward_v we_o with_o eternal_a life_n if_o we_o repent_v of_o our_o sin_n and_o believe_v and_o obey_v the_o gospel_n of_o his_o son_n trust_v whole_o in_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n and_o in_o the_o merit_n and_o mediation_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n as_o it_o be_v express_v at_o large_a in_o the_o homily_n that_o the_o true_a understanding_n 2._o and_o mean_v of_o our_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n without_o work_n or_o by_o faith_n in_o christ_n only_o be_v this_o that_o although_o we_o hear_v god_n word_n and_o believe_v it_o although_o we_o have_v faith_n hope_n charity_n and_o do_v never_o so_o many_o good_a work_n thereunto_o yet_o we_o must_v renounce_v the_o merit_n of_o all_o the_o say_a virtue_n of_o faith_n hope_n charity_n and_o all_o other_o virtue_n and_o good_a deed_n which_o
endeavour_v to_o misrepresent_v the_o doctrine_n and_o design_n of_o my_o book_n and_o by_o affix_v ill_a name_n to_o it_o deter_v their_o follower_n from_o look_v on_o the_o inside_n or_o once_o consider_v what_o it_o be_v they_o be_v afraid_a of_o i_o shall_v here_o give_v a_o short_a abstract_n of_o the_o whole_a doctrine_n and_o do_v earnest_o beg_v that_o favour_n of_o every_o man_n if_o he_o will_v not_o be_v at_o the_o trouble_n to_o read_v and_o consider_v the_o discourse_n itself_o at_o least_o to_o peruse_v this_o short_a account_n of_o it_o before_o he_o allow_v himself_o the_o liberty_n of_o revile_v only_o i_o must_v observe_v by_o the_o way_n how_o the_o state_n of_o thing_n be_v already_o alter_v since_o the_o appear_a of_o my_o discourse_n before_o the_o great_a noise_n they_o be_v now_o grow_v great_a patron_n of_o holiness_n and_o whatever_o they_o talk_v of_o the_o excellency_n of_o christ_n person_n or_o of_o his_o boundless_a and_o bottomless_a compassion_n and_o of_o such_o a_o infinite_a mercy_n which_o all_o the_o sin_n in_o the_o world_n can_v equal_v and_o of_o such_o a_o patience_n as_o will_v save_v we_o notwithstanding_o our_o sin_n they_o mean_v no_o more_o than_o what_o we_o believe_v as_o hearty_o as_o they_o that_o christ_n be_v able_a and_o willing_a to_o save_v all_o those_o who_o repent_v and_o believe_v and_o reform_v their_o life_n and_o that_o he_o will_v save_v none_o but_o upon_o these_o term_n i_o be_o glad_a with_o all_o my_o heart_n to_o hear_v this_o for_o i_o design_v no_o more_o than_o to_o establish_v this_o doctrine_n but_o what_o account_n can_v they_o give_v after_o this_o of_o their_o general_a outcry_n against_o legal_a and_o moral_a preacher_n be_v there_o any_o man_n who_o teach_v the_o people_n that_o holiness_n will_v save_v they_o without_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n i_o know_v no_o such_o they_o be_v none_o of_o my_o companion_n and_o complice_n at_o who_o the_o doctor_n so_o often_o flurt_n and_o if_o there_o be_v no_o real_a difference_n between_o we_o but_o only_o a_o different_a phrase_n and_o manner_n of_o expression_n i_o wonder_v why_o they_o shall_v be_v so_o angry_a with_o those_o man_n who_o speak_v that_o so_o plain_o that_o the_o people_n can_v mistake_v they_o which_o they_o affect_v to_o obscure_v in_o uncouth_a and_o mystical_a phrase_n there_o can_v be_v no_o account_n give_v of_o this_o but_o that_o they_o be_v willing_a at_o least_o that_o the_o people_n shall_v believe_v there_o be_v a_o difference_n and_o be_v not_o so_o faithful_a to_o man_n soul_n as_o to_o prevent_v such_o dangerous_a mistake_n be_v these_o phrase_n of_o come_v to_o christ_n and_o close_v with_o christ_n and_o lean_v and_o rest_v and_o roll_v our_o soul_n on_o christ_n for_o salvation_n and_o such_o like_a general_o understand_v not_o only_o by_o some_o cunning_a sophister_n when_o they_o be_v force_v by_o reason_n and_o argument_n to_o put_v a_o sober_a sense_n on_o they_o but_o by_o the_o common_a people_n to_o signify_v no_o more_o than_o expect_v to_o be_v save_v by_o christ_n according_a to_o gospel-term_n that_o be_v upon_o the_o condition_n of_o faith_n and_o repentance_n and_o a_o new_a life_n i_o shall_v think_v he_o very_o ill_o employ_v who_o shall_v disturb_v the_o peace_n of_o the_o church_n for_o the_o sake_n of_o any_o mode_n of_o speak_v but_o when_o it_o be_v so_o evident_a that_o the_o preacher_n themselves_o when_o they_o have_v no_o adversary_n expound_v these_o phrase_n to_o a_o very_a different_a if_o not_o contrary_a purpose_n and_o that_o the_o generality_n of_o hearer_n never_o suspect_v that_o come_n to_o christ_n and_o close_v with_o christ_n include_v obedience_n and_o a_o holy_a life_n but_o that_o this_o be_v rather_o a_o hindrance_n to_o their_o close_n with_o christ_n as_o their_o preacher_n tell_v they_o this_o make_v it_o necessary_a to_o oppose_v those_o form_n of_o speech_n which_o be_v general_o abuse_v to_o evil_a purpose_n and_o it_o be_v a_o argument_n of_o no_o great_a honesty_n to_o be_v fond_a of_o word_n and_o phrase_n to_o the_o prejudice_n of_o man_n soul_n and_o yet_o after_o all_o this_o the_o doctor_n can_v forget_v his_o old_a grudge_n against_o these_o preacher_n of_o holiness_n he_o tell_v we_o i_o know_v there_o be_v not_o a_o few_o who_o in_o the_o course_n of_o a_o vain_a worldly_a conversation_n whilst_o there_o be_v scarce_o a_o back_n or_o belly_n of_o a_o disciple_n of_o christ_n that_o bless_v god_n upon_o account_n of_o their_o bounty_n or_o charity_n the_o footstep_n of_o levity_n vanity_n scurrility_n and_o profaneness_n be_v moreover_o leave_v upon_o all_o the_o path_n of_o their_o haunt_n be_v wont_a to_o declaim_v about_o holiness_n 119_o good_a work_n and_o justification_n by_o they_o which_o be_v a_o ready_a way_n to_o instruct_v man_n to_o atheism_n or_o the_o scorn_n of_o every_o thing_n that_o be_v profess_v in_o religion_n no_o doubt_n but_o there_o be_v a_o great_a mixture_n of_o truth_n and_o modesty_n in_o this_o censure_n i_o thank_v god_n i_o know_v no_o such_o person_n and_o if_o i_o do_v i_o shall_v abhor_v they_o as_o much_o as_o he_o can_v but_o the_o doctor_n quarrel_n seem_v to_o be_v not_o so_o much_o at_o the_o vanity_n and_o profaneness_n etc._n etc._n of_o their_o conversation_n for_o it_o be_v a_o know_a maxim_n among_o they_o the_o worse_a the_o better_o as_o at_o their_o preach_a holiness_n etc._n etc._n good_a sir_n if_o such_o man_n be_v permit_v to_o preach_v what_o will_v you_o have_v they_o preach_v shall_v they_o cry_v down_o holiness_n and_o preach_v up_o debauchery_n be_v this_o the_o way_n to_o cure_v the_o world_n of_o atheism_n or_o shall_v they_o teach_v man_n to_o trust_v whole_o in_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n without_o any_o righteousness_n of_o their_o own_o i_o confess_v this_o will_v much_o more_o become_v they_o and_o i_o wonder_v all_o bad_a man_n be_v not_o of_o this_o persuasion_n though_o i_o hope_v the_o doctor_n and_o his_o friend_n have_v some_o better_a reason_n for_o their_o zeal_n for_o the_o same_o cause_n these_o man_n persecute_v my_o discourse_n the_o whole_a design_n of_o which_o be_v no_o more_o than_o to_o convince_v man_n of_o the_o absolute_a necessity_n of_o a_o universal_a righteousness_n in_o order_n to_o please_v god_n in_o the_o merit_n of_o jesus_n christ_n which_o yet_o be_v not_o we_o but_o by_o god_n work_v in_o we_o that_o we_o may_v the_o better_o understand_v this_o we_o must_v inquire_v what_o be_v mean_v by_o this_o faith_n in_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n and_o what_o be_v mean_v by_o a_o true_a and_o lively_a faith_n in_o christ_n merit_n and_o what_o our_o church_n attribute_n to_o this_o faith_n in_o the_o work_n of_o justification_n first_o what_o be_v mean_v by_o faith_n in_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n now_o the_o general_a notion_n of_o faith_n be_v that_o it_o be_v a_o persuasion_n and_o belief_n in_o man_n heart_n 1_o whereby_o he_o know_v that_o there_o be_v a_o god_n and_o agree_v unto_o all_o truth_n of_o god_n most_o holy_a word_n contain_v in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n this_o be_v such_o a_o faith_n as_o devil_n and_o wicked_a man_n may_v have_v but_o then_o a_o faith_n in_o christ_n merit_n or_o a_o true_a justify_v faith_n such_o as_o no_o wicked_a man_n can_v have_v be_v not_o only_o the_o common_a belief_n of_o the_o article_n of_o faith_n but_o it_o be_v also_o a_o true_a trust_n and_o confidence_n of_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n through_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n and_o a_o stead_n fast_o hope_v of_o all_o good_a thing_n to_o be_v receive_v at_o god_n hand_n and_o that_o although_o we_o through_o infirmity_n or_o temptation_n of_o our_o ghostly_a enemy_n do_v fall_n from_o he_o by_o sin_n yet_o if_o we_o return_v again_o to_o he_o by_o true_a repentance_n that_o he_o will_v forgive_v and_o forget_v our_o offence_n for_o his_o son_n sake_n our_o saviour_n jesus_n christ_n and_o will_v make_v we_o inheritor_n with_o he_o of_o his_o everlasting_a kingdom_n and_o that_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n till_o that_o kingdom_n come_v he_o will_v live_v and_o come_v to_o heaven_n but_o without_o faith_n never_o any_o man_n have_v life_n the_o thief_n that_o be_v hang_v when_o christ_n suffer_v do_v believe_v only_o and_o the_o most_o merciful_a god_n justify_v he_o though_o as_o bishop_n davenant_n observe_v his_o faith_n produce_v a_o great_a many_o good_a work_n in_o a_o very_a short_a time_n but_o than_o it_o follow_v if_o he_o have_v live_v and_o not_o regard_v faith_n and_o the_o work_v thereof_o he_o shall_v have_v lose_v his_o salvation_n again_o but_o this_o be_v the_o effect_n that_o i_o say_v that_o faith_n by_o itself_o save_v he_o but_o work_v by_o themselves_o never_o justify_v any_o man_n where_o he_o prefer_v faith_n above_o work_n because_o faith_n be_v a_o universal_a principle_n of_o obedience_n be_v accept_v by_o god_n without_o work_n when_o there_o want_v time_n or_o opportunity_n to_o act_v they_o though_o in_o no_o other_o case_n but_o no_o work_n can_v be_v please_v and_o acceptable_a to_o god_n unless_o they_o proceed_v from_o a_o true_a and_o hearty_a faith_n neither_o faith_n be_v without_o work_n have_v opportunity_n thereto_o nor_o work_n can_v avail_v to_o everlasting_a life_n without_o faith_n the_o three_o thing_n note_v of_o faith_n be_v what_o manner_n of_o good_a work_n faith_n produce_v and_o the_o good_a work_n of_o faith_n be_v not_o some_o external_a act_n of_o hypocrisy_n or_o some_o worthless_a and_o flatter_a devotion_n not_o some_o arbitrary_a superstition_n etc._n etc._n but_o be_v the_o substantial_a duty_n of_o religion_n which_o consist_v in_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o of_o man_n which_o make_v we_o like_a to_o god_n and_o useful_a to_o the_o world_n as_o be_v excellent_o discourse_v in_o the_o second_o and_o three_o part_n of_o the_o homily_n of_o good_a work_n so_o that_o according_a to_o the_o sense_n of_o our_o church_n justify_v faith_n be_v not_o a_o idle_a and_o unactive_a principle_n but_o be_v fruitful_a in_o good_a work_n and_o no_o other_o faith_n can_v justify_v we_o but_o such_o a_o lively_a faith_n as_o abound_v in_o all_o the_o fruit_n of_o righteousness_n according_a as_o it_o have_v occasion_n and_o opportunity_n of_o do_v good_a but_o to_o make_v this_o still_o more_o evident_a i_o observe_v far_o that_o whereas_o our_o church_n seem_v to_o lay_v the_o great_a stress_n upon_o one_o particular_a act_n of_o faith_n in_o the_o matter_n of_o justification_n viz._n our_o trust_n in_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n and_o our_o apprehend_v the_o promise_n of_o forgiveness_n through_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n she_o also_o make_v a_o good_a life_n or_o at_o least_o a_o firm_a and_o steadfast_a resolution_n of_o a_o good_a life_n antecedent_o necessary_a to_o this_o justify_v act_n of_o faith_n or_o to_o our_o trust_n and_o affiance_n in_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n through_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o lord_n and_o saviour_n this_o be_v evident_a from_o that_o reason_n which_o be_v assign_v why_o no_o wicked_a man_n can_v have_v a_o sure_a trust_n and_o confidence_n in_o god_n mercy_n for_o how_o can_v any_o man_n have_v this_o true_a faith_n this_o sure_a confidence_n in_o god_n 3_o that_o by_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n his_o sin_n be_v forgive_v and_o be_v reconcile_v to_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n and_o to_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n by_o christ_n when_o he_o live_v ungodly_a and_o deny_v christ_n in_o his_o deed_n sure_o no_o such_o ungodly_a man_n can_v have_v this_o faith_n and_o trust_n in_o god_n for_o as_o they_o know_v christ_n to_o be_v the_o only_a saviour_n of_o the_o world_n so_o they_o know_v also_o that_o wicked_a man_n shall_v not_o enjoy_v the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n they_o know_v that_o god_n hate_v unrighteousness_n that_o he_o will_v destroy_v all_o those_o that_o speak_v untrue_o that_o those_o who_o have_v do_v good_a work_n which_o can_v be_v do_v without_o a_o lively_a faith_n in_o christ_n shall_v come_v forth_o into_o the_o resurrection_n of_o life_n and_o those_o that_o have_v do_v evil_a shall_v come_v unto_o the_o resurrection_n of_o judgement_n very_o well_o they_o know_v also_o that_o to_o they_o that_o be_v contentious_a and_o to_o they_o that_o will_v not_o be_v obedient_a unto_o the_o truth_n but_o will_v obey_v unrighteousness_n shall_v come_v indignation_n wrath_n and_o affliction_n etc._n etc._n the_o plain_a meaning_n of_o which_o word_n be_v this_o that_o no_o wicked_a man_n can_v have_v a_o true_a faith_n in_o god_n mercy_n because_o the_o promise_n of_o that_o a_o true_a lively_a justify_v faith_n be_v fruitful_a in_o good_a work_n we_o be_v express_o teach_v that_o he_o that_o believe_v that_o all_o that_o be_v speak_v of_o god_n in_o the_o bible_n be_v true_a and_o yet_o live_v so_o ungodly_a that_o he_o can_v look_v to_o enjoy_v the_o promise_n and_o benefit_n of_o god_n although_o it_o may_v be_v say_v that_o such_o a_o man_n have_v a_o faith_n and_o belief_n to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o proper_o say_v that_o he_o believe_v in_o god_n or_o have_v such_o a_o faith_n and_o trust_n in_o god_n whereby_o he_o may_v sure_o look_v for_o grace_n mercy_n and_o everlasting_a life_n at_o god_n hand_n but_o rather_o for_o indignation_n and_o punishment_n according_a to_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o wicked_a life_n this_o contain_v the_o very_a same_o doctrine_n which_o be_v express_v in_o the_o former_a paragraph_n &_o far_o give_v we_o a_o account_n what_o distinction_n our_o church_n make_v between_o credere_fw-la deo_fw-la &_o credere_fw-la in_o deum_fw-la to_o believe_v god_n and_o to_o believe_v in_o god_n the_o first_o signify_v to_o believe_v whatever_o be_v contain_v in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n to_o be_v true_a the_o second_o be_v to_o yield_v such_o obedience_n to_o the_o revelation_n of_o the_o divine_a will_n as_o may_v encourage_v we_o to_o trust_v in_o god_n for_o the_o accomplishment_n of_o all_o those_o gracious_a promise_n of_o pardon_n and_o eternal_a life_n this_o be_v all_o the_o fiducial_a reliance_n which_o our_o church_n teach_v to_o trust_v to_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n through_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n for_o pardon_n and_o eternal_a life_n upon_o our_o faithful_a discharge_n of_o all_o gospel-obedience_n the_o same_o doctrine_n be_v more_o express_o teach_v if_o it_o be_v possible_a in_o the_o second_o part_n of_o the_o sermon_n of_o faith_n very_o very_o i_o say_v unto_o you_o he_o that_o believe_v in_o i_o have_v everlasting_a life_n now_o forasmuch_o as_o both_o the_o homily_n of_o our_o church_n and_o the_o augustan-confession_n do_v in_o express_a xx._n word_n find_v the_o doctrine_n of_o repentance_n upon_o that_o first_o commission_n give_v to_o
