though_o not_o as_o principal_a cause_n for_o they_o say_v we_o be_v only_o justify_v and_o save_v by_o christ_n yet_o as_o conseruant_a cause_n of_o our_o salvation_n but_o the_o truth_n be_v they_o be_v no_o cause_n of_o salvation_n neither_o efficient_a principal_a nor_o conseruant_a nor_o yet_o material_a formal_a or_o final_a as_o have_v elsewhere_o be_v show_v the_o three_o opinion_n be_v the_o truth_n that_o good_a work_n be_v necessary_a not_o as_o cause_n of_o salvation_n or_o justification_n but_o as_o inseparable_a consequent_n of_o save_v faith_n in_o christ_n whereby_o we_o be_v justify_v and_o save_v or_o as_o a_o way_n be_v necessary_a to_o the_o go_v to_o a_o place_n the_o dignity_n of_o good_a work_n work_n be_v express_v in_o this_o that_o they_o be_v call_v good_a now_o they_o be_v good_a only_o in_o part_n not_o perfect_o as_o i_o show_v thus_o such_o as_o the_o tree_n be_v such_o be_v the_o friute_v but_o every_o one_o regenerate_v be_v partly_o spirit_n and_o partly_o flesh_n that_o be_v in_o part_n regenerate_v and_o in_o part_n natural_a and_o corrupt_a this_o be_v true_a of_o his_o mind_n will_n and_o affection_n which_o be_v the_o fountain_n of_o all_o his_o action_n and_o therefore_o the_o work_n that_o proceed_v thence_o must_v needs_o be_v answerable_a that_o be_v in_o part_n corrupt_v as_o they_o come_v from_o nature_n and_o yet_o good_a in_o part_n as_o they_o come_v from_o grace_n quest._n but_o how_o can_v god_n approve_v of_o they_o if_o they_o be_v evil_a ans._n we_o must_v consider_v good_a work_n two_o way_n first_o in_o themselves_o as_o they_o be_v compare_v with_o the_o law_n and_o the_o rigour_n thereof_o and_o so_o they_o be_v sin_n because_o they_o answer_v not_o to_o that_o perfection_n which_o the_o law_n require_v for_o there_o be_v two_o degree_n of_o sin_n rebellion_n which_o be_v action_n flat_o against_o the_o law_n and_o defect_n when_o a_o man_n do_v those_o thing_n that_o the_o law_n command_v but_o yet_o fail_v in_o the_o manner_n of_o do_v and_o so_o be_v man_n very_a best_a work_n sin_n second_o consider_v good_a work_n as_o do_v by_o a_o person_n regenerate_v and_o reconcile_v to_o god_n in_o christ_n and_o so_o god_n accept_v of_o they_o for_o in_o christ_n the_o want_v thereof_o be_v cover_v but_o here_o we_o must_v take_v heed_n of_o the_o romish_a doctrine_n â—7_n which_o teach_v that_o good_a work_n be_v so_o far_o forth_o good_a that_o there_o be_v no_o sin_n in_o they_o their_o reason_n be_v many_o to_o prove_v this_o point_n but_o they_o have_v be_v heretofore_o confute_v first_o they_o say_v good_a work_n have_v god_n for_o their_o author_n and_o therefore_o be_v perfect_o good_a answ._n this_o be_v true_a if_o he_o alone_o be_v the_o author_n of_o they_o but_o man_n be_v another_o author_n thereof_o from_o who_o they_o take_v their_o imperfection_n they_o say_v again_o that_o here_o they_o be_v call_v good_a but_o if_o they_o have_v any_o sin_n in_o they_o they_o shall_v be_v call_v evil_a for_o every_o sin_n be_v perfect_o evil_a ans._n where_o sin_n be_v unremit_v it_o be_v perfect_o evil_a but_o when_o it_o be_v pardon_v in_o our_o saviour_n christ_n it_o be_v as_o though_o it_o be_v not_o three_o they_o object_n that_o if_o good_a work_n be_v sinful_a than_o they_o must_v not_o be_v do_v and_o hereupon_o they_o say_v that_o by_o our_o doctrine_n man_n be_v bind_v to_o abstain_v from_o all_o good_a work_n answer_n that_o which_o be_v evil_a must_v not_o be_v do_v so_o far_o forth_o as_o it_o be_v evil_a now_o good_a work_n be_v not_o simple_o and_o absolute_o evil_a they_o be_v good_a in_o themselves_o and_o in_o we_o in_o part_n come_v from_o grace_n and_o therefore_o they_o must_v be_v do_v because_o god_n require_v they_o at_o our_o hand_n and_o for_o the_o imperfection_n of_o they_o we_o must_v pray_v for_o pardon_n in_o our_o saviour_n christ._n and_o here_o by_o the_o way_n we_o may_v just_o tax_v the_o proud_a doctrine_n of_o the_o papist_n who_o teach_v that_o man_n may_v be_v justify_v by_o good_a work_n when_o as_o the_o best_a work_n of_o any_o man_n in_o this_o life_n be_v taint_v with_o sin_n and_o be_v far_o unanswerable_a â—_o to_o that_o perfection_n which_o the_o law_n require_v we_o must_v be_v of_o a_o far_a other_o mind_n namely_o that_o for_o our_o best_a work_n god_n may_v just_o condemn_v we_o because_o we_o have_v not_o do_v they_o as_o we_o ought_v therefore_o christ_n bid_v we_o say_v of_o ourselves_o that_o when_o we_o have_v do_v all_o that_o we_o can_v we_o be_v unprofitable_a servant_n the_o use_n of_o good_a work_n be_v here_o set_v down_o by_o our_o saviour_n christ_n to_o work_n glorify_v god_n this_o be_v not_o the_o whole_a end_n of_o good_a work_n his_o intend_a purpose_n the_o use_n and_o end_n of_o good_a work_n be_v threefold_a either_o concern_v god_n god_n ourselves_o or_o our_o brethren_n as_o good_a work_n concern_v god_n they_o have_v three_o use_n first_o they_o serve_v as_o mean_n whereby_o 1_o we_o give_v unto_o god_n testimony_n of_o our_o homage_n and_o obedience_n unto_o his_o commandment_n for_o by_o creation_n preservation_n and_o redemption_n he_o be_v our_o lord_n and_o our_o god_n and_o so_o prescribe_v law_n for_o we_o to_o keep_v in_o which_o regard_n we_o owe_v homage_n unto_o he_o which_o that_o we_o may_v show_v forth_o and_o testify_v we_o must_v walk_v in_o good_a work_n as_o he_o in_o his_o word_n have_v command_v us._n second_o they_o serve_v to_o be_v token_n of_o 2_o our_o thankfulness_n unto_o god_n for_o our_o creation_n redemption_n and_o manifold_a preseruation_n both_o in_o soul_n and_o body_n thankfulness_n indeed_o be_v show_v in_o word_n but_o yet_o true_a thankfulness_n stand_v in_o obedience_n and_o our_o obedience_n be_v show_v by_o do_v good_a work_n and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n paul_n exhort_v we_o to_o give_v up_o our_o body_n as_o holy_a and_o acceptable_a sacrifice_n unto_o god_n rom._n 12._o 1._o three_o they_o serve_v to_o 3_o make_v we_o follower_n of_o god_n we_o be_v command_v to_o be_v holy_a as_o he_o be_v holy_a 1._o pet._n 1._o 15._o and_o man_n be_v know_v to_o be_v in_o christ_n and_o to_o have_v true_a title_n to_o all_o his_o benefit_n and_o therefore_o when_o the_o apostle_n will_v man_n to_o 6_o give_v all_o diligence_n to_o yet_o be_v acceptable_a unto_o god_n and_o so_o do_v many_o now_o adays_o many_o good_a work_n acceptable_a to_o god_n though_o not_o command_v answ._n their_o freewill_a offering_n be_v ordain_v of_o god_n and_o therefore_o be_v acceptable_a they_o be_v only_o free_a in_o regard_n in_o the_o time_n of_o offer_v they_o but_o for_o the_o manner_n how_o and_o the_o place_n where_o they_o must_v be_v offer_v both_o these_o be_v appoint_v of_o god_n again_o they_o say_v phinees_n 31._o slay_v zimrâ—_n and_o cosbie_n with_o god_n approbation_n â—_o though_o he_o be_v no_o magistrate_n and_o law_n of_o nature_n or_o command_v by_o god_n word_n yet_o in_o a_o infidel_n or_o a_o unregenerate_a person_n they_o be_v sin_n for_o first_o they_o proceed_v from_o a_o heart_n which_o be_v corrupt_a with_o original_a sin_n and_o with_o unbelief_n for_o the_o 35._o heart_n be_v the_o fountain_n of_o all_o action_n and_o also_o they_o be_v practise_v by_o the_o member_n of_o the_o body_n which_o be_v weapon_n of_o unrighteousness_n and_o therefore_o must_v needs_o be_v like_a unto_o water_n spring_v from_o a_o corrupt_a fountain_n and_o run_v through_o a_o filthy_a channel_n second_o these_o work_n be_v not_o do_v for_o god_n glory_n and_o the_o good_a of_o man_n three_o they_o be_v not_o do_v in_o obedience_n to_o god_n according_a to_o the_o rule_n of_o goodness_n the_o will_n master_n be_v good_a work_n yea_o as_o good_a in_o their_o kind_n as_o the_o best_a work_n of_o the_o high_a calling_n and_o the_o same_o may_v be_v say_v of_o all_o lawful_a calling_n and_o the_o work_v thereof_o be_v they_o never_o so_o base_a for_o god_n judge_v not_o the_o goodness_n of_o the_o work_n by_o the_o excellency_n of_o the_o matter_n whereabout_o it_o be_v occupy_v but_o by_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o doer_n this_o point_n must_v be_v learned_a for_o the_o papist_n conceit_n do_v stick_v fast_o in_o man_n heart_n that_o there_o be_v no_o good_a work_n but_o the_o build_n of_o church_n and_o hospital_n the_o mend_n of_o high_a way_n give_v of_o large_a alm_n etc._n etc._n but_o we_o must_v learn_v that_o every_o action_n of_o a_o man_n lawful_a call_n do_v in_o obedience_n to_o god_n for_o the_o good_a of_o man_n be_v a_o good_a work_n before_o god_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v so_o walk_v every_o one_o of_o we_o in_o our_o calling_n that_o the_o duty_n thereof_o may_v be_v acceptable_a to_o god_n again_o this_o will_v hence_o follow_v that_o in_o these_o our_o day_n we_o may_v as_o well_o abound_v in_o such_o work_n as_o be_v good_a indeed_o as_o the_o papist_n do_v in_o their_o superstitious_a thus_o much_o of_o the_o difference_n of_o good_a work_n iii_o point_n now_o more_o particular_o in_o the_o text_n be_v further_o set_v down_o 1_o
