suppress_v great_a untamedness_n in_o the_o one_o than_o he_o do_v in_o the_o other_o this_o be_v the_o distance_n and_o difference_n betwixt_o they_o god_n grace_n work_v upon_o a_o civil_a man_n be_v like_o fire_n in_o the_o consume_n of_o dry_a wood_n but_o god_n grace_n work_v upon_o a_o wicked_a man_n be_v like_o fire_n in_o the_o consume_n of_o green_a wood_n where_o both_o of_o they_o be_v burn_v up_o but_o one_o of_o they_o with_o the_o great_a opposition_n and_o repugnancy_n in_o the_o fuel_n itself_o to_o the_o burn_a of_o it_o and_o so_o answerable_o for_o the_o most_o part_n be_v conversion_n in_o such_o as_o these_o more_o difficult_a in_o regard_n of_o themselves_o and_o with_o great_a trouble_n and_o affliction_n to_o they_o there_o be_v more_o of_o the_o break_a bone_n of_o the_o terror_n and_o bruising_n of_o the_o almighty_a in_o the_o conversion_n of_o scandalous_a sinner_n and_o those_o who_o have_v live_v wicked_o and_o debauched_o than_o there_o be_v in_o the_o conversion_n of_o those_o who_o have_v be_v more_o free_a from_o such_o kind_n of_o offence_n as_o these_o be_v thus_o we_o see_v what_o cause_n there_o be_v for_o man_n to_o be_v encourage_v in_o way_n of_o civility_n and_o to_o take_v heed_n of_o way_n of_o looseness_n and_o profaneness_n not_o only_o as_o hereby_o avoid_v the_o great_a condemnation_n and_o as_o have_v less_o punishment_n attend_v thereupon_o but_o likewise_o as_o be_v not_o so_o far_o though_o far_o enough_o from_o a_o state_n of_o conversion_n a_o state_n of_o civility_n be_v not_o so_o far_o from_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n as_o a_o state_n of_o profaneness_n but_o yet_o this_o again_o will_v admit_v of_o a_o further_a explication_n of_o it_o still_o to_o bring_v it_o home_o to_o the_o full_a and_o that_o be_v this_o that_o though_o a_o state_n of_o civility_n be_v not_o so_o far_o from_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n as_o a_o state_n of_o profaneness_n simple_o and_o absolute_o consider_v because_o a_o profane_a person_n which_o commit_v such_o gross_a sin_n as_o be_v odious_a to_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n such_o a_o one_o be_v easy_o convince_v of_o the_o wickedness_n and_o vileness_n of_o his_o way_n from_o whence_o he_o be_v draw_v to_o close_v with_o christ_n upon_o his_o own_o condition_n out_o of_o the_o necessity_n which_o he_o apprehend_v he_o have_v of_o he_o whereas_o on_o the_o other_o side_n a_o civil_a person_n which_o be_v guilty_a of_o none_o of_o those_o crime_n he_o be_v apt_a to_o be_v so_o far_o opinionate_a and_o conceit_a of_o his_o own_o civil_a righteousness_n and_o that_o goodness_n which_o he_o have_v already_o in_o himself_o as_o to_o think_v that_o he_o have_v no_o need_n at_o all_o of_o christ_n but_o may_v do_v very_o well_o without_o he_o and_o so_o perish_v for_o want_v of_o that_o remedy_n which_o otherwise_o he_o may_v be_v supply_v withal_o as_o it_o be_v sometime_o in_o the_o body_n those_o which_o have_v great_a it_o be_v with_o man_n also_o in_o religion_n civility_n trust_v in_o be_v further_o off_o from_o conversion_n than_o profaneness_n in_o the_o effect_n and_o consequent_n of_o it_o this_o be_v the_o case_n of_o the_o jew_n in_o comparison_n of_o the_o gentile_n the_o gentile_n simple_o consider_v be_v far_o great_a sinner_n than_o they_o yet_o in_o this_o event_n save_v before_o they_o as_o the_o apostle_n express_v it_o in_o rom._n 9.30_o 31._o what_o shall_v we_o say_v they_o that_o the_o gentile_n which_o follow_v not_o after_o righteousness_n have_v attain_v to_o righteousness_n even_o the_o righteousness_n which_o be_v of_o faith_n but_o israel_n which_o follow_v after_o the_o law_n of_o righteousness_n have_v not_o atttain_v to_o the_o law_n of_o righteousness_n wherefore_o because_o they_o seek_v it_o not_o by_o faith_n but_o as_o it_o be_v by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n etc._n etc._n so_o again_o rom._n 10.3_o they_o be_v ignorant_a of_o god_n righteousness_n and_o secret_a enemy_n and_o hater_n of_o goodness_n which_o though_o perhaps_o they_o may_v not_o be_v so_o open_o and_o notorious_o scandalous_a as_o some_o other_o be_v yet_o have_v bitter_a and_o malicious_a spirit_n and_o affection_n in_o they_o against_o the_o way_n of_o god_n such_o as_o these_o be_v of_o a_o devilish_a nature_n and_o the_o spirit_n that_o work_v in_o the_o child_n of_o disobedience_n rule_v in_o they_o they_o be_v therefore_o far_o from_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n and_o the_o government_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o spirit_n which_o be_v a_o spirit_n of_o holiness_n this_o be_v the_o condition_n of_o those_o other_o person_n in_o this_o chapter_n which_o come_v to_o christ_n the_o pharisee_n and_o sadducee_n and_o herodian_o they_o come_v to_o he_o with_o a_o malicious_a affection_n to_o entangle_v he_o and_o ensnare_v he_o in_o his_o speech_n and_o thereby_o to_o betray_v he_o who_o therefore_o be_v say_v here_o implicit_o to_o be_v far_o from_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n which_o this_o honest_a scribe_n be_v not_o and_o so_o in_o other_o place_n of_o the_o gospel_n our_o saviour_n do_v in_o special_a manner_n strike_v at_o the_o pharisee_n for_o thus_o their_o malicious_a oppose_a and_o contradict_v of_o the_o know_a truth_n which_o do_v set_v man_n in_o as_o great_a a_o distance_n to_o this_o purpose_n as_o any_o thing_n else_o and_o nothing_o more_o even_o there_o where_o it_o be_v veil_v with_o the_o fair_a pretence_n that_o may_v be_v three_o all_o such_o person_n as_o be_v mere_o civil_a or_o formal_a which_o have_v no_o more_o but_o common_a and_o moral_a honesty_n in_o they_o though_o this_o in_o itself_o and_o simple_o consider_v be_v very_o good_a we_o do_v not_o speak_v against_o it_o nor_o have_v not_o need_v in_o these_o time_n yet_o such_o i_o say_v who_o be_v no_o more_o than_o so_o they_o be_v far_o from_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n there_o be_v a_o infinite_a distance_n betwixt_o civility_n and_o piety_n betwixt_o god_n nature_n and_o grace_n betwixt_o formality_n and_o the_o power_n of_o religion_n those_o which_o go_v no_o far_o than_o that_o they_o come_v far_o short_a of_o this_o and_o so_o in_o conclusion_n if_o they_o go_v no_o far_o of_o that_o which_o be_v the_o consequent_a of_o it_o eternal_a life_n thus_o our_o saviour_n himself_o tell_v we_o matt._n 5.20_o i_o say_v unto_o you_o that_o except_o your_o righteousness_n exceed_v the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n you_o shall_v in_o no_o case_n enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n they_o be_v very_o strict_a and_o exact_a person_n in_o many_o respect_n their_o conversation_n to_o the_o world_n be_v very_o fair_a and_o free_a from_o offence_n they_o be_v punctual_a in_o their_o observation_n of_o the_o law_n and_o the_o outward_a part_n of_o god_n worship_n and_o service_n and_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o our_o saviour_n tell_v the_o people_n who_o he_o there_o speak_v to_o that_o except_o they_o take_v care_n to_o go_v beyond_o they_o there_o be_v no_o come_n for_o they_o to_o heaven_n no_o more_o there_o be_v not_o they_o must_v have_v somewhat_o more_o in_o they_o than_o this_o or_o no_o salvation_n and_o thus_o it_o have_v likewise_o be_v apprehend_v by_o those_o who_o god_n have_v please_v to_o enlighten_v and_o to_o work_v a_o further_a work_n in_o they_o as_o for_o instance_n the_o apostle_n paul_n himself_n we_o can_v have_v a_o better_a proof_n of_o this_o point_n than_o in_o his_o epistle_n by_o consider_v he_o what_o he_o be_v before_o conversion_n and_o consider_v he_o what_o he_o be_v after_o take_v it_o from_o his_o own_o mouth_n gal._n 1.14_o he_o there_o tell_v we_o what_o he_o have_v be_v before_o how_o he_o he_o have_v profit_v in_o the_o jew_n religion_n above_o many_o of_o his_o equal_n and_o have_v be_v exceed_o zealous_a of_o the_o tradition_n of_o his_o father_n so_o phil._n 3.6_o he_o say_v that_o touch_v the_o righteousness_n which_o be_v in_o the_o law_n he_o be_v blameless_a and_o if_o any_o other_o have_v whereof_o he_o may_v trust_v in_o the_o flesh_n he_o have_v more_o well_o but_o now_o and_o so_o it_o be_v likewise_o with_o any_o other_o person_n beside_o who_o be_v no_o more_o but_o so_o they_o be_v in_o this_o respect_n but_o short_a of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n there_o be_v a_o double_a defect_n or_o insufficiency_n in_o mere_a civility_n to_o this_o purpose_n first_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o object_n or_o matter_n which_o it_o be_v exercise_v about_o which_o be_v considerable_a chief_o in_o the_o inferior_a thing_n of_o the_o law_n and_o such_o as_o do_v regulate_v and_o reform_v the_o outward_a conversation_n as_o justice_z and_o temperance_n and_o sobriety_n and_o such_o as_o these_o but_o as_o for_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d the_o weighty_a and_o more_o substantial_a matter_n as_o faith_n and_o repentance_n and_o self-denial_n and_o mortification_n here_o it_o be_v more_o lax_n and_o remiss_a or_o nothing_o at_o all_o second_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o principle_n and_o spring_n whence_o these_o action_n proceed_v which_o be_v not_o a_o heart_n any_o thing_n change_v or_o renew_v in_o the_o spirit_n of_o its_o mind_n as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v but_o still_o remain_v in_o its_o natural_a condition_n and_o original_a corruption_n and_o defilement_n which_o it_o have_v contract_v to_o itself_o in_o each_o of_o these_o respect_n do_v civility_n shall_v short_v of_o salvation_n and_o therefore_o let_v none_o of_o we_o rest_n satisfy_v or_o content_v with_o it_o let_v this_o be_v the_o use_n and_o improvement_n which_o we_o make_v of_o this_o observation_n to_o labour_v to_o find_v a_o further_a work_n than_o this_o come_v to_o upon_o our_o heart_n a_o sight_n of_o our_o wretched_a and_o miserable_a condition_n by_o nature_n and_o mourn_v under_o it_o a_o new_a bias_n and_o inclination_n put_v upon_o we_o carry_v we_o out_o to_o that_o righteousness_n which_o be_v in_o christ_n a_o close_n with_o christ_n upon_o the_o term_n and_o condition_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o forsake_v our_o dear_a lust_n to_o forego_v our_o strong_a corruption_n to_o be_v willing_a to_o do_v or_o suffer_v whatsoever_o he_o shall_v lay_v upon_o we_o to_o deny_v ourselves_o perfect_o for_o he_o and_o to_o submit_v to_o his_o sceptre_n and_o government_n to_o take_v place_n in_o we_o to_o have_v a_o special_a savour_n and_o relish_v of_o the_o truth_n and_o doctrine_n of_o the_o scripture_n especial_o as_o they_o be_v any_o thing_n more_o pertinent_a to_o the_o practical_a part_n of_o religion_n to_o love_v the_o child_n of_o god_n upon_o this_o account_n because_o they_o be_v his_o child_n and_o have_v his_o image_n enstamp_v upon_o they_o these_o and_o the_o like_a be_v such_o thing_n as_o be_v somewhat_o further_o than_o mere_a civility_n and_o the_o common_a honesty_n of_o the_o world_n which_o whosoever_o have_v not_o in_o themselves_o more_o or_o less_o and_o in_o some_o kind_n of_o measure_n and_o degree_n be_v so_o far_o forth_o in_o this_o distance_n and_o remoteness_n
measure_n and_o degree_n of_o goodness_n which_o may_v be_v desire_v can_v hardly_o be_v persuade_v to_o acknowledge_v any_o good_a in_o they_o at_o all_o but_o set_v they_o at_o a_o absolute_a distance_n and_o remoteness_n from_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n and_o as_o have_v nothing_o to_o do_v with_o it_o this_o we_o must_v take_v heed_n we_o do_v not_o do_v as_o carrying_z too_o much_o rigour_n and_o severity_n in_o it_o indeed_o we_o must_v be_v careful_a we_o do_v not_o sow_v pillow_n under_o man_n elbow_n and_o nourish_v they_o in_o a_o course_n of_o security_n persuade_v they_o that_o it_o be_v well_o with_o they_o and_o in_o good_a case_n when_o it_o be_v no_o such_o matter_n but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n we_o must_v not_o blemish_v their_o grace_n nor_o deny_v the_o work_n of_o god_n in_o their_o heart_n woe_n unto_o they_o which_o call_v either_o evil_a good_a or_o good_a evil_n which_o put_v darkness_n for_o light_n or_o light_n for_o darkness_n which_o put_v bitter_a for_o sweet_a or_o sweet_a for_o bitter_a as_o the_o prophet_n speak_v there_o in_o that_o place_n in_o isa_n 5.20_o that_o be_v the_o first_o notion_n in_o this_o expression_n as_o it_o be_v a_o word_n of_o commendation_n and_o so_o have_v with_o it_o the_o force_n of_o encouragement_n second_o it_o be_v also_o a_o word_n of_o diminution_n thou_o be_v not_o far_o from_o that_o be_v thou_o be_v not_o quite_o at_o home_n thou_o have_v somewhat_o further_o yet_o to_o go_v and_o so_o now_o it_o be_v a_o word_n of_o excitement_n christ_n by_o show_v he_o his_o distance_n do_v persuade_v he_o to_o go_v a_o little_a further_o he_o take_v he_o as_o it_o be_v by_o the_o hand_n and_o direct_v he_o to_o a_o further_a pitch_n in_o christianity_n which_o he_o will_v have_v he_o to_o attain_v unto_o thus_o shall_v we_o do_v likewise_o so_o acknowledge_v beginning_n of_o goodness_n as_o to_o carry_v on_o to_o further_a progress_n that_o so_o as_o on_o the_o one_o side_n we_o may_v not_o dishearten_v they_o or_o discourage_v goodness_n in_o they_o so_o on_o the_o other_o side_n we_o may_v not_o flatter_v they_o or_o soothe_v they_o up_o in_o a_o more_o remiss_a condition_n and_o so_o make_v they_o content_v with_o less_o grace_n instead_o of_o labour_v to_o attain_v to_o great_a this_o we_o learn_v here_o from_o our_o saviour_n practice_n who_o drift_n be_v to_o carry_v on_o this_o scribe_n to_o further_a perfection_n and_o this_o speech_n of_o our_o saviour_n it_o be_v effectual_a to_o he_o hereunto_o in_o sundry_a respect_n first_o as_o it_o show_v he_o his_o defect_n and_o imperfection_n for_o which_o he_o have_v need_n to_o go_v forward_o and_o proceed_v a_o little_a further_o while_o he_o say_v he_o be_v not_o far_o from_o it_o he_o do_v imply_v he_o have_v not_o full_o attain_v it_o there_o be_v nothing_o which_o be_v at_o any_o time_n a_o great_a hindrance_n and_o impediment_n to_o improvement_n than_o a_o apprehension_n and_o conceit_n of_o perfection_n when_o man_n shalll_v think_v they_o be_v at_o their_o journey_n end_n they_o will_v not_o step_v any_o further_o but_o when_o they_o shall_v be_v persuade_v and_o consider_v that_o they_o be_v not_o yet_o at_o home_n this_o will_v set_v they_o upon_o go_v this_o now_o be_v the_o speech_n of_o christ_n to_o this_o person_n before_o we_o thou_o have_v not_o absolute_o come_v to_o the_o mark_n and_o therefore_o go_v on_o it_o be_v the_o text_n which_o wrought_v upon_o st._n paul_n as_o himself_o relate_v it_o to_o we_o phil._n 3.12_o 13._o not_o as_o though_o i_o have_v already_o attain_v or_o be_v already_o perfect_a but_o i_o follow_v after_o etc._n etc._n brethren_n i_o count_v not_o myself_o to_o have_v apprehend_v but_o this_o one_o thing_n i_o do_v forget_v those_o thing_n which_o be_v behind_o and_o reach_v forth_o unto_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v before_o i_o press_v etc._n etc._n second_o it_o show_v he_o also_o his_o hope_n and_o possibility_n that_o be_v another_o encouragement_n and_o excitement_n and_o provocation_n to_o endeavour_v those_o which_o think_v they_o shall_v never_o attain_v they_o will_v never_o undertake_v but_o this_o expression_n thou_o be_v not_o far_o off_o it_o take_v off_o that_o there_o be_v hope_n of_o come_v thither_o for_o you_o be_v almost_o there_o already_o do_v not_o give_v over_o now_o in_o the_o that_o we_o have_v begin_v it_o that_o so_o we_o may_v not_o lose_v the_o labour_n of_o all_o our_o former_a undertake_n and_o attempt_n we_o shall_v imitate_v this_o example_n of_o christ_n in_o help_v other_o forward_a in_o religion_n as_o aquila_n and_o priscilla_n do_v apollo_n and_o thus_o have_v this_o expression_n in_o it_o the_o force_n of_o a_o peroration_n and_o a_o excitement_n not_o only_o show_v what_o now_o be_v but_o what_o ought_v to_o be_v for_o time_n to_o come_v in_o pursuit_n of_o what_o be_v already_o we_o may_v here_o now_o further_o look_v upon_o these_o word_n not_o only_o consider_v in_o themselves_o and_o as_o declare_v the_o state_n and_o condition_n of_o this_o scribe_n to_o who_o they_o be_v speak_v but_o also_o reslexively_a as_o come_v from_o our_o saviour_n the_o speaker_n of_o they_o and_o that_o as_o the_o word_n of_o judgement_n and_o discretion_n while_o our_o saviour_n pass_v this_o censure_n upon_o this_o person_n he_o do_v it_o out_o of_o a_o spirit_n of_o discern_v and_o as_o one_o that_o know_v what_o be_v in_o man_n as_o it_o be_v say_v of_o he_o in_o joh._n 2.25_o now_o although_o we_o can_v expect_v to_o reach_v to_o this_o in_o the_o perfection_n of_o it_o yet_o we_o may_v and_o aught_o to_o imitate_v it_o in_o a_o degree_n as_o much_o as_o may_v be_v namely_o to_o discern_v and_o distinguish_v of_o person_n that_o so_o observe_v what_o they_o be_v he_o discern_v the_o pharisee_n and_o sadducee_n in_o the_o forego_n part_n of_o the_o chapter_n as_o to_o their_o hypocrisy_n and_o dissimulation_n and_o treachery_n against_o he_o and_o here_o now_o he_o discern_v the_o scribe_n in_o his_o sincerity_n and_o honesty_n and_o plain-dealing_a and_o the_o integrity_n that_o be_v in_o his_o heart_n together_o with_o the_o weakness_n and_o imperfection_n of_o grace_n within_o thus_o it_o shall_v be_v with_o we_o proportionable_o in_o our_o conversation_n in_o the_o world_n as_o politician_n study_v man_n so_o also_o shall_v christian_n especial_o those_o above_o other_o who_o live_v in_o place_n of_o society_n and_o converse_v and_o have_v many_o person_n to_o deal_v withal_o here_o it_o be_v very_o useful_a and_o necessary_a in_o sundry_a regard_n that_o so_o according_a to_o variety_n of_o circumstance_n and_o occasion_n which_o be_v upon_o we_o and_o the_o difference_n of_o disposition_n and_o and_o direct_o and_o absolute_o in_o the_o strict_a sense_n and_o notion_n of_o the_o word_n no_o this_o be_v no_o work_n of_o we_o but_o of_o god_n alone_o god_n shall_v persuade_v japhet_n to_o do_v make_v account_n of_o or_o look_v for_o from_o it_o what_o be_v that_o which_o make_v many_o person_n so_o eager_a upon_o the_o pursuit_n of_o their_o lust_n why_o it_o be_v because_o that_o they_o hope_v from_o the_o act_n and_o fulfil_n of_o they_o they_o shall_v have_v a_o great_a deal_n the_o more_o satisfaction_n and_o rest_n and_o contentment_n in_o themselves_o they_o think_v that_o while_o their_o lust_n be_v yield_v unto_o their_o mind_n shall_v be_v so_o much_o the_o more_o at_o ease_n and_o free_a from_o turbulence_n and_o distraction_n and_o commotion_n than_o it_o
