work_v in_o we_o to_o will_v and_o to_o do_v of_o his_o good_a pleasure_n so_o that_o this_o condition_n of_o evangelical_n work_v do_v not_o evacuate_v the_o freedom_n of_o god_n grace_n nor_o yet_o diminish_v it_o but_o rather_o advance_v it_o see_v those_o work_n as_o well_o as_o the_o reward_n be_v the_o effect_n of_o his_o grace_n 2._o but_o how_o little_a moment_n there_o be_v in_o this_o objection_n must_v needs_o appear_v to_o he_o that_o first_o believe_v that_o which_o no_o body_n but_o a_o atheist_n or_o a_o epicurean_a will_v deny_v viz._n that_o there_o be_v no_o temporal_a salvation_n of_o the_o body_n life_n health_n or_o any_o other_o good_a thing_n in_o this_o world_n but_o be_v also_o the_o gift_n of_o god_n and_o second_o consider_v what_o necessity_n there_o be_v of_o humane_a industry_n care_n and_o pain_n to_o the_o obtainment_n of_o some_o at_o least_o of_o these_o gift_n and_o this_o answer_n if_o it_o be_v due_o advert_v will_v suffice_v to_o solve_v a_o other_o objection_n against_o the_o necessity_n of_o work_v in_o order_n to_o salvation_n draw_v from_o 2._o object_n the_o doctrine_n of_o predestination_n because_o that_o salvation_n which_o the_o upon_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o notion_n that_o a_o man_n have_v of_o it_o but_o upon_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o thing_n itself_o for_o it_o be_v no_o less_o possible_a for_o a_o man_n to_o have_v a_o true_a faith_n that_o have_v a_o false_a notion_n of_o it_o than_o it_o be_v for_o a_o man_n to_o attain_v unto_o salvation_n and_o the_o felicity_n of_o eternal_a life_n although_o he_o neither_o have_v nor_o can_v have_v any_o exact_a notion_n thereof_o in_o this_o life_n or_o than_o it_o be_v to_o have_v a_o reasonable_a soul_n and_o to_o act_v reasonable_o thereby_o though_o a_o man_n froâ—_n the_o faith_n of_o devil_n jam._n 2.19_o save_o that_o it_o seem_v neâ—_n to_o be_v so_o strong_a and_o free_a from_o all_o degree_n of_o doubt_n as_o they_o be_v for_o want_v of_o that_o purity_n of_o heart_n peace_n and_o patience_n etc._n etc._n so_o it_o end_v with_o a_o peremptory_a assertion_n of_o the_o necessity_n of_o obedience_n to_o the_o precept_n before_o deliver_v chap._n 7._o from_o vers_n 22._o to_o the_o end_n therefore_o whosoever_o hear_v these_o say_n of_o i_o and_o do_v they_o i_o will_v liken_v he_o unto_o a_o wise_a man_n which_o build_v his_o house_n upon_o a_o rock_n etc._n etc._n and_o every_o one_o that_o hear_v these_o say_n of_o i_o and_o do_v they_o not_o shall_v be_v liken_v unto_o a_o foolish_a man_n which_o build_v his_o house_n upon_o the_o commandment_n be_v fundamental_o necessary_a to_o the_o hope_n of_o everlasting_a life_n from_o whence_o this_o inference_n seem_v to_o be_v necessary_a that_o to_o believe_v there_o be_v no_o such_o necessity_n of_o good_a work_n to_o salvation_n be_v no_o less_o than_o a_o fundamental_a error_n in_o the_o christian_a profession_n and_o so_o without_o doubt_n it_o be_v if_o it_o be_v hold_v practical_o but_o because_o such_o a_o erroneous_a opinion_n notional_o hold_v may_v be_v consistent_a with_o the_o real_a practice_n of_o christian_a obedience_n as_o i_o doubt_v not_o but_o that_o it_o be_v in_o many_o lutheran_n and_o some_o antinomian_o it_o do_v not_o necessary_o exclude_v from_o salvation_n for_o whosoever_o hear_v christ_n saying_n and_o do_v they_o be_v by_o our_o saviour_n liken_v unto_o a_o wise_a man_n that_o build_v his_o house_n upon_o a_o rock_n and_o therefore_o shall_v undoubted_o be_v save_v whether_o he_o believe_v his_o obedience_n necessary_a to_o salvation_n or_o not_o a_o simple_a error_n in_o the_o understanding_n effectual_o correct_v in_o the_o will_n i_o believe_v shall_v never_o be_v impute_v to_o the_o honest-minded_n man_n but_o consider_v the_o natural_a influence_n of_o the_o understanding_n upon_o the_o will_n this_o heresy_n though_o not_o in_o itself_o to_o be_v reckon_v in_o the_o number_n of_o those_o which_o st._n christian_n of_o by_o many_o emphatical_a text_n saint_n paul_n himself_o after_o he_o have_v msi_v so_o much_o in_o his_o epistle_n to_o the_o roman_n and_o galatian_n upon_o the_o doctrine_n of_o justification_n by_o faith_n without_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n do_v special_o caution_n both_o church_n to_o take_v heed_n of_o this_o misprision_n rom._n 8.13_o if_o you_o live_v after_o the_o preach_n in_o the_o wilderness_n say_v repent_v you_o for_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n be_v at_o hand_n in_o like_a manner_n jesus_n begin_v to_o preach_v and_o to_o say_v repent_v for_o the_o repentance_n among_o they_o the_o very_a word_n be_v rare_o to_o be_v find_v in_o their_o book_n and_o no_o marvel_n they_o shall_v be_v dispose_v to_o listen_v after_o other_o way_n of_o purge_v their_o sin_n which_o be_v recontilable_a with_o retain_v the_o practice_n see_v the_o whole_a mass_n of_o corrupt_a nature_n be_v find_v to_o be_v as_o averse_a to_o the_o remedy_n of_o repentance_n this_o as_o we_o find_v by_o the_o frequent_a complaint_n of_o the_o prophet_n nor_o be_v christian_n any_o better_o affect_v to_o this_o wholesome_a cure_n for_o sin_n but_o every_o whit_n as_o much_o incline_v to_o elude_v the_o necessity_n of_o it_o or_o at_o least_o to_o cheat_v their_o own_o soul_n in_o the_o hypocritical_a pretence_n of_o it_o but_o the_o more_o evidence_n there_o be_v for_o the_o necessity_n of_o repentance_n unto_o salvation_n the_o more_o necessary_a it_o be_v to_o have_v a_o right_a notion_n of_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o because_o the_o mistake_n in_o this_o point_n be_v no_o less_o dangerous_a than_o in_o that_o of_o faith_n nor_o be_v man_n less_o apt_a to_o be_v deceive_v in_o the_o one_o than_o in_o the_o other_o and_o if_o there_o be_v indeed_o a_o indispensable_a necessity_n of_o repentance_n as_o well_o as_o faith_n unto_o salvation_n the_o carnal_a mind_n be_v not_o so_o solicitous_a to_o find_v out_o the_o true_a as_o the_o easy_a notion_n of_o they_o both_o that_o be_v such_o a_o one_o sa_o be_v practicable_a with_o the_o least_o restraint_n to_o his_o lust_n or_o most_o consi_v with_o his_o licentious_a liberty_n such_o a_o notion_n
declare_v wherein_o the_o true_a notion_n and_o nature_n thereof_o do_v consist_v viz._n in_o turn_v unto_o god_n repent_v and_o turn_v unto_o god_n the_o latter_a phrase_n be_v exegetical_a declare_v the_o sense_n of_o the_o former_a to_o repent_v be_v to_o turn_v unto_o god_n which_o suppose_v a_o aversion_n from_o god_n as_o the_o antecedent_n condition_n and_o posture_n of_o every_o penitent_a sinner_n and_o so_o much_o be_v signify_v by_o the_o name_n of_o a_o sinner_n sin_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o aversion_n or_o turn_v away_o from_o god_n so_o that_o repentance_n be_v the_o same_o thing_n with_o conversion_n in_o scripture-sense_n be_v a_o relative_a word_n have_v a_o double_a term_n of_o relation_n à _fw-la quo_fw-la &_o ad_fw-la quem_fw-la from_o which_o and_o to_o which_o the_o latter_a be_v express_v by_o the_o apostle_n in_o the_o forementioned_a word_n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d repent_v and_o turn_v unto_o god_n from_o whence_o it_o be_v call_v repentance_n towards_o or_o unto_o god_n act._n 20.21_o the_o former_a be_v signify_v by_o the_o same_o apostle_n he._n 6.1_o repentance_n from_o dead_a work_n that_o be_v from_o sinful_a work_n call_v dead_a work_n because_o they_o be_v the_o act_n of_o a_o man_n spiritual_o dead_a and_o destitute_a of_o spiritual_a and_o divine_a life_n these_o two_o thing_n make_v up_o the_o entire_a most_o full_o and_o plain_o express_v by_o the_o word_n of_o the_o prophet_n ezek._n 18.21_o but_o if_o the_o wicked_a man_n will_v turn_v from_o all_o his_o sin_n which_o he_o have_v commit_v and_o keep_v all_o my_o statute_n and_o do_v that_o which_o be_v lawful_a and_o right_a he_o shall_v sure_o live_v he_o shall_v not_o die_v this_o i_o take_v to_o be_v one_o of_o the_o plain_a and_o compleat_a description_n of_o repentance_n which_o be_v to_o be_v find_v in_o scripture_n wherein_o the_o same_o general_a duty_n be_v otherwise_o set_v forth_o in_o great_a variety_n of_o sin_n which_o by_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o first_o covenant_n suppose_v to_o be_v make_v with_o mankind_n in_o his_o innocency_n be_v indispensable_o exclude_v repentance_n can_v become_v a_o duty_n till_o
to_o your_o faith_n virtue_n and_o to_o virtue_n knowledge_n and_o to_o knowledge_n temperance_n and_o to_o temperance_n patience_n and_o to_o patience_n godliness_n and_o to_o godliness_n brotherly_a kindness_n and_o to_o brotherly_a kindness_n charity_n viz._n to_o all_o man_n as_o well_o 〈◊〉_d stranger_n and_o enemy_n as_o brethren_n to_o distinguish_v it_o from_o brotherly_a kindness_n or_o his_o holy_a angel_n in_o heaven_n or_o have_v our_o portion_n with_o devil_n and_o reprobate_n in_o the_o lake_n that_o burn_v with_o fire_n and_o brimstone_n the_o place_n of_o utter_a darkness_n where_o there_o be_v nothing_o but_o weep_v and_o wail_v and_o gnash_v of_o tooth_n now_o be_v there_o no_o more_o than_o a_o mere_a possibility_n or_o probability_n at_o most_o of_o these_o event_n to_o a_o man_n without_o any_o convince_a evidence_n of_o their_o certainty_n yet_o be_v it_o extreme_o unreasonable_a to_o neglect_v they_o especial_o when_o as_o the_o mean_n requisite_a to_o the_o secure_v they_o be_v so_o inconsiderable_a in_o comparison_n of_o the_o value_n and_o importance_n of_o the_o end_n and_o otherwise_o so_o high_o valuable_a in_o themselves_o to_o he_o therefore_o that_o have_v any_o doubt_n arise_v in_o his_o mind_n about_o the_o truth_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o the_o gospel_n declare_v concern_v the_o judgement_n to_o come_v hell_n and_o heaven_n and_o be_v thereby_o tempt_v to_o neglect_v they_o i_o shall_v only_o propound_v by_o way_n of_o advice_n towards_o his_o rescue_n from_o such_o a_o fatal_a hazard_n these_o three_o question_n to_o be_v deliberate_v upon_o before_o he_o abandon_v himself_o to_o such_o a_o desperate_a course_n 1._o whether_o there_o be_v any_o impossibility_n in_o the_o substance_n of_o these_o doctrine_n that_o there_o be_v another_o life_n after_o this_o with_o a_o general_n judgement_n to_o come_v upon_o all_o man_n that_o there_o be_v eternal_a reward_n and_o punishment_n for_o man_n in_o that_o future_a
